Sony CFO Bill Glaser has called PSP sales "a little bit of a disappointment" for the huge electronics company.
He was speaking in a Sony earnings call this afternoon. His comments come after full-year FY2010 earnings (for the year ended 31st March) showed flagging PS2 and PSP sales.
"PS2 is entering its 11th year this year, and it's amazing it is still contributing," said Glaser. "PSP was a little bit of a disappointment to us last year."
The PSPgo has been a commercial flop for Sony, although some rumours suggest it was an experiment ahead of a PSP2. Digital Foundry explored the possibilities recently. PS3 performed better for Sony, although its results Glaser said were "offset" by the other platforms.
Talking of other platforms, Glaser revealed that Sony was already pumping money to researching new key gaming hardware.
"We're always looking into future platforms as well. Very premature to talk about future platforms, but R&D is continuing," he said. Don't get too excited: Sony has talked long of a 10-year PS3 plan. It will take more than a giant crab to change that.

When Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed the PSP Yakuza spinoff "Project K," he suggested that it was so different from the main console series that it may not even bear the "Ryu ga Gotoku" name (the Japanese title of the series). Nagoshi, apparently remembering how nice it is to make money, has revealed that the PSP game will feature the series name after all.
The spinoff has been named Kurohyou: Ryu ga Gotoku Shinshou ("Black Leopard: New Yakuza Chapter"). A Famitsu article about the game (summarized by 1UP) also announces a September 22 Japanese release date for Kurohyou, which stars a new, younger character who isn't a gangster.

It seems miffed Linux lovers aren't only ones wrong-eyeing Sony for the removal of the 'Other OS' install option from PS3 in the latest firmware update. The US Air Force isn't best pleased either.
The US Air Force slapped Sony with an order for 2,200 PS3s to boost its high-performance computing systems at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y because it's the most cost-effective way to do so.
The mass of Sony hardware is interlinked, running Linux software - functionality which was removed from Sony's latest update. The rig apparently isn't under any immediate threat because it's not connected to PSN, but when the hardware starts breaking down replacements could be tough/impossible to find.
Surely a few Apache helicopters or a Harrier with missiles locked on SCEA boss Jack Tretton's house should patch things up. Nothing too crazy - just scare him a little.

Sony could be preparing to reveal the true sequel to PSP at next month's E3, according to speculation from a 'senior industry source'.
The anonymous speaker told MCV that two key publishers have significantly increased their marketing spend for Q4 2010, laying down the basis for suspicions they are preparing for the arrival of new hardware - PSP 2 or otherwise a fifth hardware iteration.
The site also reports that a separate publisher alluded to the development of several new PSP titles, but is withholding its future PSP plans pending a specific announcement from Sony.
PSP has been out for six years and has seen three hardware re-iterations since the original in 2004. While the third gen PSP-3000 has seen relative success of late, the PSPgo, the most recent and most radical re-shaping of the PSP SKUs, is performing badly in all regions although Sony is yet to release any official figures.
Nintendo announced its next handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, back in March, which will boast the ability to display 3D effects without the need for 3D glasses, and confirmed it will be unveiled at E3 this year.
While it's possible that Sony could be ready to reveal its response to the 3DS, MCV notes that its report is purely the speculation of its source, who did not claim to have seen one or been informed of its existence.

DICE has announced a new, four-player co-op pursuit for Battlefield: Bad Company called Onslaught mode.
This is "coming soon" to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace. The content will be paid for, according to a post by DICE associate producer "Bazajaytee" on the EA forums. He didn't say how much, simply answering "nope" when asked if the content would be free.
Onslaught mode will not be available on PC. "We aren't ruling out Onslaught on PC, but at this time we are researching how to bring it to PC without affecting players who don't have Onslaught or their own server to run it on," said Bazajaytee. "We haven't given up on a PC version of Onslaught as I say, just we have a lot things to work out first."
Onslaught mode is for up to four players. To begin with, there will be four maps to play: Valparaiso, Atacama Desert, Isla Innocentes and Nelson Bay. They've been redesigned with new lighting, time of day, more vehicles and other touches.
Each map has a different focus. Atacama pushes vehicular combat to the fore while Nelson Bay concentrates on infantry. Onslaught will have leaderboards for squads to compete on.

Elliot Martin, producer of the upcoming Move-ready SOCOM title, has told Develop he believes the new peripheral will bring about “huge change” to the shooter genre.
“With the Move controller what it allows us to do with SOCOM is have the player basically point at enemies on screen with Move as if they were aiming with a real gun in their hand,” he said.
“It’s a huge change to the genre because rather than having to move the camera, you can just point and shoot. I think Move is going to make that style of game a lot more accessible to a lot more people.”

Exciting new VS features- Based on fan feedback, the team has implemented an unbelievable variety of Vital Suits and new ways to combat VS overall . The new VS sytem will have a powerful impact on the way the player takes to the war zone in Lost Planet 2
description
A decade has passed since the first game, and the face of E.D.N. III has changed dramatically. Terraforming efforts have been successful and the ice has begun to melt, giving way to lush tropical jungles and harsh unforgiving deserts. Players will enter this new environment and follow the exploits of their own customized snow pirate on their quest to seize control of the changing planet.
Players will control their heroes across 6 interconnected episodes, creating a truly unique interactive experience that changes depending upon the actions of the players involved. With this concept, players will have the opportunity to engage in the story in a much more dynamic way as plot threads evolve from different players’ perspectives.
Beyond the deep single player mode, Lost Planet 2 is loaded
with extensive multiplayer modes. The intense and action packed campaign mode comes with the ability to form teams of up to 4 players online to clear mission objectives with friends. The grappling hooks that made the gameplay in Lost Planet a true 3-D experience are back, allowing gamers to gain tactical advantage by quickly scaling buildings.
No action game would be complete without an arsenal of weaponry, and Lost Planet 2 has a huge variety of hardware for players to unleash on unsuspecting enemies. Machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, lasers, sniper rifles, grenades and a host of other weapons are scattered across the game. However, Lost Planet 2’s biggest weapons come on two legs: the heavily armed and armored robotic Vital Suits return in greater numbers and variety than the first game. There are VS that transform into other vehicles, hold up to three players and some that even take multiple players to operate.

Updated Release from ponlork
Hello, this is a trivia game designed to help people memorize Japanese words. It's quite simple, a word pops up in English and you just need to translate it in Japanese. I also integrated a Multi-tap style text entry system to input the text. This is my first attempt at programming, I plan to add more lessons and features in the future once I get better.
Notes:
You can reveal the answer by Holding the R button and pressing Circle. Pressing the Select button will switch the keypad mode. For a spacebar, Hold R and tap forward

News from Uberjack the coder behind many emulator ports to the PSP:
It’s been almost a month since my last post, and about as long since I’ve been able to work on any of my PSP and Android projects.
There’s not a lot to report at this point on the PSP front, I’m afraid, though I’ve been considering simply posting the unfinished (and still alpha) version of the SMS Plus Ad-hoc, with the hope that someone might find it interesting enough to finish the project. Real-time networking always leaves a bad taste in my mouth – especially when error correction is completely missing (as is the case with Ad-hoc networking).

A PlayStation 3 Ape Escape game will be released sometime between now and Christmas.
This non-committal marker was provided by the game's official Twitter account, ApeClub. "Ape Escape PS3 - release date now Q2 - Q4 2010," read the tweet (thanks VG247).
Ape Escape is a platform game about netting monkeys, literally. A spiky-haired J-hero bolts around dazzlingly bright and colourful levels capturing monkeys for an unknown reason - presumably to be made into monkey-brain soup.
The series started on PSone just over 10 years ago but sadly never climbed above average. Our latest appraisal was of PS2 game Ape Escape 3 in 2006. Tom Bramwell was the judge.

MyCustomHidder is a plugin designed by French developer Zer01ne (aka Lepoete) and based on the source code developed by the famous GameCategories Bubbletune. As you can guess from the name, MyCustomHidder hides from the XMB images, video and games among those present on the Memory Stick. Of note, however, the incompatibility of the prx with the latest version (v12) in Game Categories.

Film and TV-streaming company Blinkbox is to bring a specially designed version of its service to the PlayStation 3, it has been revealed.
The service will allow UK users to download a selection of films from 99p each and TV dramas such as Gossip Girls and Heroes for around 39p. Films can also be bought to keep from £2.99.
"The PS3 is the first of a number of devices to which we will be bringing Blinkbox, enabling customers to use our service on their TVs for instant streaming of new blockbuster movies - available on the same day as their release on DVD - as well as a growing library of free ad-supported titles," the company's CEO Michael Comish told the Associated Press.
"As a console owner myself, I knew that fellow gamers wanted access to the very largest selection of movies for instant viewing, and did not want to lose valuable hard-drive space or have to wait for their downloads," he added.
Blinkbox has designed a version of its service especially for PS3, and optimised it for use with the PS3 controller.
Film rental service Netflix was launched on PS3 in November and the console also has integrated BBC iPlayer support. Last September the BBC said the PlayStation 3 had become the second most popular platform after PC on which to view iPlayer.
