Sony Computer Entertainment has said that the latest firmware upgrade will disable the Install Other OS feature of the PlayStation 3, meaning those that upgrade will be unable to run Linux on the home console.
Dropping support for Linux is down to "security concerns" according to Sony. Last month, notorious hacker George Hotz released an exploit for the console, allowing read/write access to the PlayStation 3 via Other OS and Linux.
The PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be released this Thursday, and although users are not forced to upgrade, the console will be unable to access the PlayStation Network and play any games or movies that will take advantage of the new firmware, as well as miss out on future upgrades and features.
The Other OS feature was dropped from the newer PlayStation 3 model by default when it was released last year.
Although no figures are available on how many PS3 users have installed Linux on the PlayStation 3 – and Sony indicates that it's only a small percentage – predictably the official PlayStation blog is being swamped with complaints and disappointment.
According to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog, the move is a "pre-emptive strike" against the possibility of the hardware running cracked games in the future.
"In taking such a measure to counter the hack, the logical conclusion is that Sony wants to the limit overall number of PS3s out there potentially capable of running copied games - an extraordinary pre-emptive strike against the possibility of piracy," wrote Richard Leadbetter.
Sony warned that any users that currently run Linux on the console should back-up valuable data on the Other OS partition of the hard drive, as once upgraded to firmware 3.21 they "will not be able to access that data following the update."

Sony has revealed a number of details on the PlayStation Move, including its battery life - around 10 hours - and the existence of an external port located on the underside of the controller - which it says licensees can ask it about.
According to PlayStation R&D manager Richard Marks, the controller - which uses both motion sensors and the PlayStation Eye camera to track movement - offers the "absolute best tracking".
Detection of the Z-axis is the only way a motion controller can work convincingly in 3D games, Marks told Kotaku.
"You can punch in Z," he said, adding that the Wii allows that too, but that the PS3 actually enables players to reach into a 3D world and manipulate objects.
The Move can be detected in the Z-plane at all times, he said, and with 60fps precision based on the Eye's detection of the position and relative size of the controller's coloured sphere.
Hinting at future possibilities for the Move, Marks highlighted the external port on the bottom of the controller, which hasn't yet been used in demo.
"I think there's a lot of options with having this thing being part of another peripheral, with something bigger that you would hold," Marks explained. "We've had a lot of talks with our licensees about what would make sense for this... We do have this USB cord [at the base of the wand] which is how you charge it. We also have this external port which is proprietary. Our licensees can talk to us about it."
"We don't use it right now for anything, but it has data and power, I guess I can say that much."
As well as confirming a battery life of around 10 hours before the controller would need re-charging via the USB port, Marks said that the Move will work in perfect darkness, although admitted that bright sunlight or a sudden change in light conditions could cause it problems.
"Dark is perfect," he said. "Dark is great." Direct bright sunlight on the camera would cause problems, he said, but he pointed out that people don't usually play games with the sun shining into their televisions.
"For a typical little bit of clouds going past the sun and stuff, you wouldn't ever need to re-calibrate that," he said. "In a case where it's really strong sunlight versus not-sunlight, you probably would have to re-calibrate that."
Marks also said the Move is significantly more sensitive than its competitor controllers.
"You could spin it all the way around eight times in one second," he said. "You can't [physically] do that, but in a short time you could get a burst [that fast]."
The Eye captures at 60fps, he said, while the rate of the data transmitted from the Move is "much higher".
He added that the Move can be used from between three and 10ft away from the PlayStation Eye camera.
"The kind of sweet spot everyone uses for the games is five to 10 feet," he said. At 10ft, the Eye can capture footage 12ft across and has a field of view of 75 degrees, he added.
The first Sony Move games - as well as the controller's official name - were unveiled at this year's GDC. Sony also revealed the Move controller's 'sub-controller', which works similarly to the Wii nunchuk, and a sub-$100 price tag. The hardware is due to be launched this 'fall'.

Digital software prices slashed ahead of key weekend at UK retail
A routine Bank Holiday sale or an effort to encourage struggling hardware sales – call it what you want, but PSPgo owners old and new will be greeted with some significant discounts the next time they log into the PSN Store.
Several high-profile titles have seen their prices slashed on the service, including the likes of God of War (down from £14.99 to £7.99), GTA Chinatown Wars (£29.99 to £14.99), FIFA 10 (£29.99 to £15.99), Tekken 6 (£31.99 to £15.99) Need for Speed: Shift (£29.99 to £15.99) and Gran Turismo (£17.99 to £13.99).
Permanent price reduction have also been made to a number of games, including many from EA, such as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 which drops from £29.99 to £15.99.
One of the main criticisms of the PSPgo to date has been the price of its software downloads, which compared to those available on the High Street – and particularly to pre-owned prices – are generally much higher.
Whether the price cuts can deliver the sort of hardware sales boost all platform holders look for over a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK is the obvious question to ask.
Here’s the list of discounts in full:

Sony’s throwing its weight behind the upcoming PS3 3D update in June by confirming that popular FPS title Killzone 2 will be patched to support 3D in the same month.
As spotted by Gamer Access in the latest edition of PSN series Qore, the move adds triple-A credentials to the firmware update that Sony hopes will allow PS3 to ride the current 3DTV wave.
Whether the game’s 3D update means that previous rumours that a 3D-ready Killzone 3 is preparing for a April 2011 release are now less likely remains to be seen. If the game is on the way, expect a reveal at E3 in June.
Killzone 2 joins the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and hopefully Gran Turismo 5 in the list of PS3 titles joining the 3D bandwagon.
UPDATE: Sony has stated that Killzone 2 was just one of many titles to get a 3D demo, and is not destined for a full 3D makeover. The statement, as quoted on IGN, is as follows:
"That last feature included interviews, footage from CES 2010, and a brief montage of SCEA titles intended as examples of what 3D gaming might encompass. It is hard to do justice to just how amazing 3D gaming looks in a 2D presentation—even in an HD product such as Qore.
"However, as we wanted to give our viewers an idea of the possibilities that 3D gaming has to offer, we decided to use stock footage of several first-party games that were on display at the show, including Killzone 2 (a 3D version of the television commercial was shown at CES).
"Unfortunately, our feature did not make it clear that the 2D game footage was included for demonstration purposes only. We apologize for the erroneous inference that 3D versions of LBP, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 or Super Stardust HD are in production."

David Jaffe has revealed that the development of his new game is "falling into place" - but has once again declined to tell us what it actually is.
The God Of War creator said via his blog that he'd been completing "concrete, game-making tasks" - but didn't confirm or deny rumours that the title is a remake of PlayStation classic Twisted Metal for PS3.
He wrote:
'Hey all- well I gotta say, I have not been this busy in a looong while. And it's really, really good. I love being slammed when the stuff we're slammed with are real, concrete game making tasks. This phase of the game is fantastic, where the pieces SLOWLY start falling into place and you- finally- begin to get glimpses of what you wanted the game to be from the very start. Still a long way to go and still not close to having the game of our dreams yet but we're working our asses off to get there...'
He said his team were 'super slammed' (no s******ing at the back) as they were so busy.
Nearly time to tell us what it is, David. E3, yeah?

Peter Dille admits that cryptic ads of the past made Sony look “arrogant”, but says that new approach is reaping rewards
The decision to change the cryptic, artistic PS3 ads of the past to the more straightforward design of the present – lead by the new ‘It Only Does Everything’ message – has seemingly delivered the goods for Sony.
Speaking at the MI6 marketing conference in the US, SCEA’s head of marketing Peter Dille has admitted that the first generation of PS3 ads received a poor reception from consumers.
“We struggled with our messaging early on to clearly communicate the value proposition of the PS3,” Dille stated, as reported by IGN. “Now I'd like to think that the best, crispiest messaging in the world really wouldn't have done a whole lot to sell a $600 game machine in a very horrendous economy.
“We get questions about the white room and the baby ad quite a bit [see that here]. That whole campaign was to get people to say 'What the? I need to understand more about what this is’. That whole campaign was really about power and the power the PS3 has.
“But what we found was that this whole positioning was a bit intimidating to people. Our research also showed that Sony could be perceived as arrogant.”
This approach has been scrapped post PS3 price drop in favour of a more straightforward approach – as well as the introduction of comedy corporate figure Kevin Butler.
“With our campaign now, we kind of knocked off all those obstacles,” he added. “The arrogance I think has gone away. We kind of gotten back to our mojo with the sense of humour that people came to know and love with early PlayStation advertising.
“I think it's just a more likable connection to the consumer. The campaign is working to drive hardware sales. You're going to continue to see Kevin Butler highlighting new content that is hitting the platform. That will include PlayStation Move later this year and also 3D.”
Dille added that PS3 sales soared 184 per cent following last year’s price drop, with “purchase intent” climbing from 19 per cent to 36 per cent.

Many readers have been sending in news of the impending PS3 firmware update that will remove the ability to install other operating systems on the console. (We discussed it here on Sunday.) Over the past few days, legions of PS3 owners have been voicing their anger at Sony's decision, upset that they'll be forced to either lose their custom install or forgo use of the PlayStation Network and be unable to play certain games and movies. Now, hacker George Hotz, known for his iPhone jailbreaks and his PS3 hack earlier this year, has vowed to fight back and restore Linux support on the PS3. He said, "The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout its lifecycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field.

The Blu-ray Disc Association announced upcoming specifications for high-capacity write-once and rewritable discs. The BDA proposed two new formats, BDXL, the name given to new 100GB and 128GB discs; and IH-BD, a so-called 'Intra-Hybrid' disc that will incorporate both read-only and rewritable layers. Specifications for both disc types will be published during the upcoming months. Both formats will be incompatible with existing hardware; however, new players designed to take advantage of the new formats will be able to play back existing Blu-ray discs, which are available in both 25 and 50GB capacity points

Hori is a company that's no stranger to strapping LCDs to consoles and calling them portable, but for some reason we're quite smitten with its latest monitor docking station. The HP3-87 doesn't stray too far from the formula -- it adds an 11.6-inch screen to a wraparound structure for your PS3, with stereo speakers, two headphone jacks, and composite or component input options. With a resolution of 1,366 x 768, it's well suited to handling the 16:9 signal coming out of the do-everything console, although its 500:1 contrast ratio, 7ms response time, and 200 nits of brightness are perhaps a tiny step behind the times. On the other hand, it's compatible with the Japan-only Torne DTV adapter and it's officially licensed by Sony itself, so it can't be too bad, right? All you Tokyo-ites will have until May 27 to decide, when the HP3-87 goes on sale for ¥26,040 ($276). International release plans are not yet disclosed, but if you really need the portability, you could always grab a PS3 laptop from your local online auction house. Which option will be more useful (less useless?) we leave up to you to decide.

This probably isn't a response to the 3D onslaught or even "superbit" releases like the upcoming Avatar 2D disc, but just in case the standard 50GB Blu-ray discs were beginning to feel a bit -- how do you say... cramped? -- the Blu-ray Disc Association's rolling out a new BDXL format capable of holding up to 128GB (write-once) or 100GB (rewriteable). Before you get too excited, you should know that you'll need a new player to access these -- even a firmware update won't save the PS3 this time -- since they go up to three or four layers deep and will likely need a more powerful laser. While our home movies can be compressed just fine, corporations currently still using other mediums for archiving might appreciate the extra space, as well as the new IH-BD discs, designed with one 25GB read-only layer, and one 25GB rewritable layer on the same platter. If you're looking for a place to permanently back up that super high-res "amateur photography," take heart -- a consumer version is in the works, though it will first be aimed at markets where Blu-ray Disc recorders are popular, or available at all (read: maybe Japan, definitely not the US). No word when the new hardware will actually hit the market, but final specs are due "in the next few months."

Sure, it's got the old name but Sony's "Motion Controller" CECH-ZCM1U is undoubtedly Sony's new PlayStation Move controller. There's not much to glean from the tests (yes, it passed) other than the specific mention of a Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR radio. The rest of the filing is under a 180 day confidentiality request good until September -- a bit earlier than Sony's reported "holiday" launch plans. Don't read too much into that FCC date though, Sony can always extend.

Though we've all played some form of Jedi-centric game throughout the course of our lives, some of our younger readers may have missed out on the ground floor of the Star Wars FPS movement by not checking out the 1996 PlayStation classic, Star Wars: Dark Forces. Fear not -- you won't have to go hunting through pawn shops to get your Kyle Katarn fix. The game recently showed up on the ESRB's list of adjudicated titles, slated to land on the PSOne Classics platform.
We've contacted LucasArts to find out a time frame for the game's arrival on the PSN. As for the new listings for XS Junior League Dodgeball and XS Airboat Racing, we ... man, we just don't know who we'd contact about those.

Are you one of the few people who still need new content on the PS2? It looks like Sony may be reaching into the depths of its PSP archive to find more ports to bring to the aging console. The ESRB has appended its rating for Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow -- the latest (and arguably greatest) entry in Sony's stealth franchise -- with both PSP and PS2 as the listed platforms.
It seems to be quite a stretch to think that Sony would invest the time and money to release a PS2 port so late into the system's life cycle (we've contacted Sony and the ESRB, to be clear). And while Logan's Shadow is a terrific game, it's strange that Sony would want to port a game that is already nearly three years old. Perhaps that effort could be better used on creating a PS3 iteration of the franchise?

The Openbor Engine has again been updated for consoles, Wii, Wiz, GP2x, Dreamcast, Dingoo and PSP:
History
----------------------
As fans of the 'Streets of Rage' series that originally appeared on the SEGA
megadrive/genesis, we always wanted to see streets of rage 4. But the waiting
proved futile, and streets of rage 4 never came. That's why we tried to correct
this mistake and fill the void by making the ultimate tribute to Streets of Rage:
Beats of Rage!!
Development
----------------------
Beats of Rage was created by Senile Team. However, the character sprites and
some parts of the backgrounds are taken from 'the King of Fighters' games by
SNK Playmore. Therefore special thanks go out to SNK Playmore and SEGA who
unknowingly helped in creating this game.
Beats of Rage and OpenBOR are a free, fully functional game, which includes
music, and features six playable levels plus a bonus level. It is available
for many systems
Whats New:
Freezetime and Frozen are now available to getentityproperty(). Previously they were only open to changeentityproperty().
Level spawn aggression setting is now added to model's original aggression setting instead of replacing it.

ScummVM has been updated, heres what it is for those who dont know what it is:
ScummVM is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical point-and-click adventure games, provided you already have their data files. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed!
Some of the adventures ScummVM supports include Adventure Soft's Simon the Sorcerer 1 and 2; Revolution's Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword I & II; Flight of the Amazon Queen; Wyrmkeep's Inherit the Earth; Coktel Vision's Gobliiins; Westwood Studios' The Legend of Kyrandia and games based on LucasArts' SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) system such as Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, Sam and Max and more. You can find a thorough list with details on which games are supported and how well on the compatibility page. ScummVM is continually improving, so check back often.
Its out for most consoles we cover which are:
Dreamcast
Nintendo DS
Apple Iphone/Ipod Touch
PSP
PS2
N64
S60/UIQ Phones
Heres the release news:
Another 4 months passed, a lot of hard work done... and finally it is here: ScummVM 1.1.0 is available now on our downloads page.
There are some pretty exciting new features: We added support for 16bit graphics, which allowed us to add support for a whole bunch of newer Humongous Entertainment games for kids. We also added or improved support for the Amiga versions of Monkey Island, Legend of Kyrandia and Future Wars. Plus there are two completely new engines for the games Dragon History (available for free from here) and TeenAgent (available for free from GOG.com). And finally there is now a port for the Nintendo 64 game console!
Take a look at the release notes if you want to know a bit more.
There is one grain of salt, though: If you want to play Nippon Safes Inc, we recommend that you stick with your current ScummVM version for now, as there are some nasty regressions in there which may even make it impossible to complete the game. Also the background music in Pajama Sam 1 isn't working correctly in the Kitchen and Mine areas anymore.
We are not happy about that, but in the end decided that we should not let this hold up the other new cool stuff we added. Instead, we will follow up this release in about four weeks with a 1.1.1 release that should fix these issues. In fact, you can help us make 1.1.1 even better by reporting any bugs you might encounter in 1.1.0.
Heres whats new in this release:

JaicraB has posted info about a method which can be used to dump lv2 RAM in PS3 where the hypervisor code resides, check his blog post here (Google translated from Spanish). The hardware mod described keeps RAM from being erased during reboot of the PS3 which allows the user to dump the desired memory region from Linux (Other OS) using the Glitch Hack. "

The next system software update for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system will be released on April 1, 2010 (JST), and will disable the “Install Other OS” feature that was available on the PS3 systems prior to the current slimmer models, launched in September 2009. This feature enabled users to install an operating system, but due to security concerns, Sony Computer Entertainment will remove the functionality through the 3.21 system software update.

It was September 12 last year when the coder dan369 has released the first version of its PSP homebrew game Mario The New Worlds, as you can guess from the name, rather faithfully reproduces the good old Super Mario Bros. on your PSP. Today, after a few months, it shall be the third revision of the program with several improvements of a purely graphic (see additional animations, better textures to finish levels etc.). Optimizations and gameplay as the completion of the enemy AI, the 'adding invisible blocks and other minor details, remember that you can play all levels with Mario with Luigi.
Below you will find a demonstration video, the full changelog, and the link to download.
Changelog-Video:
Quote:
• Finished off the Red Koopa a.i
• Finished off the stand alone coins
• Improved the tails and the lagging with shells hitting
• Added in Background Music for Hurry Overworld Both the version and versione general
• Improved the animation code by using INSTEAD OF timers counter based (still dislike the timer module hugely though)
• Added Invisible blocks in (YAY!)
• Completely changed the movement and jumping to a more progressive form static Rather Than by this I mean you can build up speed and speed loss by moving / not moving, same goes for jumping, the Longer you hold X the higher you jump just Compared to tapping it.
• Added clipping logic blocks on WHERE you if you'd barely clipped a block to be Placed on the side Which you hit it Rather Than Actually hitting it. (Used in the brick blocks,? Mark Invisible blocks and blocks)
• Added 2 more levels, the first is very big at 650x17 (More Than Double the original) is the seconded 350x17 (i think, can not remember But It's Their around)
• In Death Added animations for Both Koopas (green & red) & for goombas When hit by shell.
• Changed the positioning of the HUD to fill the screen and added more A Few Improvements to make it look more like the original for example, the score is now 0 0000000 INSTEAD OF just the like the old version
• Have a "OK" menu now Which Should not confused anyone on Which character to pick the GFX still isn't great at loading screen is Now Also Present Takes 3 seconds to load everything
• Reverted to using the classic old school Mario 8bit graphics, fit in with the game a lot better now and less hassle for me seeing as the custom sprites Exactly Were not used to the stairs.

ragnarok2040 posted some interesting news regarding work on the Snes Emulator for the PS2 recently:
I actually have some good news, .
I've been playing with some C++ code for the PS2 in order to research and solve the linking problem I had with snes9x-1.51. The last time I fiddled with snes9x-1.51's source, I couldn't compile the input code because of problems with using the <string> part of libstdc++ as well as istream/ostream objects which were resulting in a variety of problems.
After testing a few things out, I had a hunch that it was because ps2sdk's libc and newlib's libc having the same name. Which was resulting in either a precedence issue with ps2sdk's libc or ps2sdk's libc was the only libc being linked. The second option seems more likely since ee-g++ was complaining of missing symbols and newlib's libc was used to build libstdc++.
In the end, I renamed newlib's libc.a to libn.a, and made sure -lc preceded -ln in the linking order, and the problems seem to have gone away. That means I shouldn't have to rewrite a large portion of snes9x to get it working, .
TL;DR
Might have fixed a C++ linking problem, so I shouldn't have to rewrite a good sized part of Snes9x to get it working.
I still have the sources for the last alpha of snes9x-1.43, but I'm not sure I can reuse any of the code. It does make a good guide for doing the new port, though, since the elements haven't changed.
I just need to finish the GUI design doc. and implement it. There are quite a few more features planned, so the code will be more complex but using an object-oriented design will simplify the implementation a lot, especially being able to use the string object, .

Hi everyboby,
I've created a PSP homebrew using augmented reality.
the first step, called Area 0, is most of all a proof of concept.
But, you will aim to uncover the region's mysteries.
So, download Region X Area 0,
Print one of makers provided in the folder named "imprimables".
patt0_1500 is the most appropriate to do movements near the marker.
Although you'd better use the patt0_1800 for better result futher from the marker.
In a well-lighted place, connect your Go!Cam and launch the homebrew.

Sg57 posted some nice news about his new project for the PSP:
I'm not usually one to create a WIP thread due to the obligations that come along with it, but meh - I've put so much time into the game design I'd never sleep a good night again if I were to abandon it. I'm interested in any 3D modeler support that comes from this WIP post.
I'd rather not type up the release information when its a WIP video so to make a long story short - The World is an emulated (for now?) MMORPG based off the same concept found in the .hack// saga. (in a somewhat related note, .hack//Link just came out on PSP in japan)
A majority of the resources you see were either created by me or taken from a free online resource and heavily modified by me (in this case, the Male character model who I rigged and animated). They aren't perfect nor are they guaranteed a spot in the released version. If you have 3D modeling skillz and would like to assist, feel free to let me know here, by email or on freenode (##psp-programming)

News/release from nickxab
Well i had the idea to convert my psp to an ir controler. So i tried the universal
remote but i didn't find the remote code which i wanted.
So i found the iR Commander 0.8 and i said to try it.
I downloaded and i installed on my psp but it was corrupted.I installed it again but the same.
Then i searched for about 3 months and i found the way to fix it.
the problem was that the ir commander 0.8 builded for the first CFWs and from
the 2.71 SE and above shows as corrupted.
Anyway now it works from 2.71 SE until the 5.00 M33.
5.50 isn't supported yet cause the 1.50 kernel isn't released yet and leda doesn't
work with 5.50 GEN.
Info:iR Commander is an Infra-Red Universal Remote Control software for PSP.
It allows you to control various home appliances and other infra-red based equipments
via the standard Pronto Hex Codes available on the net.
Usage Note:1) unzip the iR Commander 0.8 fixed for new CFWs.rar and place the folder "IRCOM" to your PSP under /PSP/GAME/.
2) You can define a remote control by adding a Remote Control Description file (rdf). This is a plain
text file. Pls refer to the sample "Panasonic TV.rdf" for syntax description. You can simply use Windows
Notepad to create a rdf, make sure you disable Word Wrap via Format->Word Wrap menu. This will allow you
to see one code entry per line under Notepad.
3) If you make any typos in rdf file. The program will abort telling what & where you've made the typo
after you have chosen that remote in the application.
4) There is an iR indicator on the top right corner on the remote control screen. It'll flash in RED if
the PSP is tranmitting IR signal.
5) Refer to the "Panasonic TV.rdf" sample for defining Macros.
6) To select the bundled IR codes, press SQUARE button to switch to directory view and make selection.
"Codes" folder contains the standard Pronto Hex Codes and "Discrete Codes" folder contains Discrete Codes"
from Welcome to Remote Central: Universal Remote Control Reviews & More!. Codes from Component Configuration Files (ccf) from Welcome to Remote Central: Universal Remote Control Reviews & More! are
not included.

News/release from Coris
Hello!
I've been inspired luca00555's "save fix" program, and I decided to modify it a little bit.
Here is a third version of my program that fix problem with corrupted save and some old games. I added support for GEN-C and option that restore original 5.50GEN-D3 and 5.03GEN-C files.
How to use it?
- Copy psp folder from archive on your memory stick
- lunch "fix v3"
- wait a few second
- now your GEN is fixed and you can play old games and use your save that didn't work well on 5.50GEN D3 / 5.03 Gen-C
!! After this fix, the new games that required 5.50GEN D3 or 5.03GEN-C will not work anymore !!
How to undo the changes made by this program?
- run the "fix v3" again
- wait few seconds
- now you have oryginal 5.50GEN3/5.03 GEN-C with all it's problems

News via http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010/...coming-to-psp/
Hey there PlayStation devotees,
I’m swinging by the PlayStation.Blog to talk to you about our upcoming PSP exclusive Hexyz Force. (Also to collect on a bet I made with Kevin Butler a while back. Apparently one of his many job titles is not VP of Clutch Three-Point Shooting.)
Hexyz Force is an engrossing RPG that tells not just one, but two engrossing tales. That’s a lot of engrossing, folks. Either follow Levant von Schweitzer through a tale of political intrigue, war and racial tensions, or play as Cecilia Armaclite as she learns about embracing responsibility, love and friendship. While most people would charge double the price for a value such as this, or possibly even tack on one of the tales as downloadable content, we are pleased to bring this game to you for the recession-friendly price of only $29.99! (A huge theoretical savings!)
While the two tales are playable as their own separate, self-contained games, playing them both will flesh out the main story and the universe more than you’d get out of just playing through the game as one character. So you have all the benefits of getting a different story with different party with different skills, yet you still have the joy of digging further and wringing every last drop of fun out of a game.
One of the nice features Sting put into this game are the 20 minutes of animated cutscenes. Quality 2D animation and sprites are always going to have a place in video games, so it’s nice to see a developer show the care and attention needed to craft things like this.
Despite what certain members of the House of Representatives think, this is not something someone should be nuked over.
So, you know that Hexyz Force is going to have a nice story and some impressive visuals, but what about the gameplay? RPGs hang their hat on their gameplay, so none of this other stuff matters if Hexyz isn’t fun to play as a game, right? Well, I’m happy to say that Hexyz Force has an engaging, complex system for combat.
If you’re an RPG veteran, you’re going to be able to get right into the turn-based gameplay. If you’re trying crank up your effectiveness, you’ll start trying to work the Hexyz Charge into your strategy to pile on the damage.
How about a round of applause for John Tubera, our awesome video guy.
Attacks are generally classified as falling under one of the three Divine Aspects. If you use an attack that is the same Aspect as the previous attack, or use an attack from an Aspect that is stronger than the previous Aspect, the Hexyz Charge will build. When you finally break the Charge, your attack will be boosted depending on how large you got the Charge to grow.
In addition to that, there’s the fun of crafting and fusing your own weapons, and scanning the world to find hidden treasure points. There’s a little wrinkle in pretty much every aspect of Hexyz that you can use to boost your advantage.
Well, that’s pretty much all the time I have for today. If I’ve piqued your interested in this title, swing by the game’s official website and learn more about it, or pre-order Hexyz Force for your PSP today. It’s solid, affordable, and a great value for those long summer months.
Thanks for stopping by and reading,
Clayton S. Chan

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2010/04/07/...-1-0-released/
A couple days back ZiNgA BuRgA released Rcomage v1.1.0… Rcomage lets you dump any RCO (localized resource) file from both PSP and PS3 firmwares. Break the RCO on down and customize text strings, audio, and graphics to your liking. Recompile the modified resources and you’ve just created yourself an all-new one-of-a-kind experience.
Now considering the PS3 is damn near fully hacked, you can bet Rcomage will serve the masses well, as it did, and continues to do in the PSP scene. Good looking out ZiNgA BuRgA.
Rcomage v1.1.0:
Minor message output changes
Fixed bug where rcomage may have tried to convert non-GIM images through gimconv when dumping
Fixed minor issue if Image/Sound/Text tree contained no subentries
Removed option to select compression for PNG/JPG/TIF/GIF resources in GUI as it’s mostly useless and may break the RCO if changed
Add UMDFlag attribute to RcoFile tag
Reduce the use of CDATA sections in the dumped text XML file
Add basic VSMX decoder/encoder; add corresponding option when dumping/compiling in CLI and GUI, as well as vsmxdec and vsmxenc functions in the CLI
Add experimental VSMX -> Javascript decompiler. This will most likely crash, but if you’re lucky, it might go through and give half-readable output. Only use this if you’re really interested; can only be accessed via the CLI using the –decompile option of vsmxdec
Export some internal constants to .ini files
Add support for UTF8 and UTF32 text in RCOs (found in PS3 RCOs); also fixed some potential character encoding issues
Add support for Fontstyle entries (used in the sysconf PS3 RCO)
Greatly improve handling PS3 RCO object structures (thanks goes to geohot for RCO samples)
Add support for writing PS3 RCOs; also modify GimConv to add PS3 configuration option

A controversial update which was seeded by Sony in order to remove the ability to run Linux on the Playstation 3 games console has caused a storm of complaints. The 3.21 firmware upgrade, which removes the security hole provided by the 'Install Other OS' widget used by lots of educational institutions and hackers alike, also removes the console's ability to play games... turning it into a very expensive doorstop

Activision announced today that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "Stimulus Package" set a new Xbox Live record -- clearly, mapathy had set in. According to Microsoft's figures, the DLC pack was downloaded over one million times in 24 hours, surpassing 2.5 million units within a week. All at $15 a pop.
To recap: 2.5 million of you are totally okay with a $15 map pack so, if this happens again, we aren't going to be there to kiss the boo-boo if it's suddenly $20. Just so we're on the same page.

Forthcoming PSP game Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will feature characters from the Monster Hunter series, including mascot Felyne.
News of the crossover emerged via Famitsu magazine, which reported that creatures such as the Tigrex and Velociprey will appear in the game.
MGS creator Hideo Kojima confirmed the plans at a press conference in Tokyo. According to Andriasang a video of Snake fighting some familiar enemies was shown, accompanied by Monster Hunter background music. "It looks like Monster Hunter, but with Snake," apparently.
Kojima will embark on a world tour to mark the release of Peace Walker, beginning when the game is released in Japan on 29th April. A European launch will follow on 18th June.

Sony has two Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker bundles planned for the U.S. and Canada. There’s the now boring Spirited Green PSP set and a limited edition Big Boss PSP package. Previously, the latter bundle was only announced for Mexico.
Items in the Big Boss pack include: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, an unnamed movie voucher (Canada gets it on UMD), 4GB memory stick, a camouflage PSP-3000, and a matching carrying case. This package also unlocks a camouflage uniform with FOX logos and a stealth gun weapon for Snake to use early in the game.
The Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Big Boss pack will only be available at Gamestop and it costs $199.99. Look for it on June 8.

From playstationuniversity.com
Retailer Amazon has offered a partial refund to a European PS3 owner following his complaint about the removal of the console’s ‘Other OS’ feature. Firmware 3.21 infamously removed the ability to install other Operating Systems (such as Yellow Dog Linux) on the PlayStation 3. Though the feature was widely unused by the majority of PS3 gamers, many were angered by Sony’s audacity to remotely disable an original PS3 feature. One gamer has come up trumps, citing European law to earn a partial refund.
That’s a partial refund from Amazon without returning their PS3. Said gamer is NeoGAF Forum moderator Iapetus, who cited European law to argue that his original 60GB console, which was considerably out of warranty and Amazon’s 30-day guarantee, no longer operated as advertised. The online retailer’s policy was to offer a refund weighing in at approximately 20 per cent of the console’s original value (£84).
Said European law is Directive 1999/44/EC, which was accepted into European Parliament on 1 January 2002. Apart from requiring all European member states to alter their legislation to carry at least a two-year warranty on all new consumer goods (the UK’s Sale of Goods Act offers up to 6 years possible protection) the Directive also includes a stipulation relevant to Sony’s removal of the PS3’s Other OS. The two points read:
“The goods must:
* comply with the description given by the seller and posses the same qualities and characteristics as other similar goods
* be fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase.”

Sales of PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavy Rain have hit one million copies, according to Quantic Dream co-founder David Cage - a number that has greatly exceeding publisher estimates.
Speaking to German website Play3.de, as reported by VG247, Cage indicated that initial sales predictions for the title had stood at only 200,000 to 300,000 units.
"We have sold more than 1 million copies of Heavy Rain worldwide," said Cage. "That was a surprise to many … we estimate that by the end of the year, we will have sold 1.5 million copies, and are very pleased with the reception."
"Our game isn't an action game, it's not a role-playing game, [and] it's not an adventure. It isn't in any one genre. When you create a new, convention-busting game to the market, it's always a risk, both for the developer and the publisher," he added.
The game was supported by a strong television advertising campaign in Europe, as well as being featured in an official PlayStation 3 hardware bundle in some territories.

Face it: Sony's backed you into a corner. You can't play PS3 online without downloading the 3.21 firmware update, but if you download, your precious 'Other OS' is forfeit -- and there may be side effects. You could wait it out, hoping Geohot comes through with a workaround. You could even sue Sony for a refund if you live in Europe. Or, if you're not terribly worried about the security of your PSN account and personal information, you could instead input just ten digits into your PS3 and magically bypass the entire issue. Though technically minded individuals have been skirting Sony's firmware checks for years now using private proxies, homebrew developer Aaron Lindsay decided to set up a public server at 67.202.81.137, which allows anyone to piggyback on his success in mere seconds -- we tried it ourselves, and it worked like a charm. By doing so, you run the risk of giving Aaron all your credentials... but if the odd identity theft doesn't break your stride, you can jump right back into that Uncharted 2 session by entering the above number into Internet Connection Settings > DNS Setting > Primary DNS.

For the dozens of you interested in the NCAA Football franchise returning to PSP in 2010, today's news of the 2011 iteration of the game not heading to Sony's handheld is likely a pretty major bummer. On one hand, you were probably expecting it when yesterday's announcement of Tim Tebow as the cover athlete didn't include the PSP on its list of consoles (also absent was the Nintendo Wii), but on the other hand, there's been a PSP release for the last two years. IGN confirmed the lack of a PSP version release with EA, who subsequently confirmed an iPhone App Store release. So there's something, right? Right?

Sony has apologised for the row surrounding the removal of the Install Other OS function from older PlayStation 3 consoles.
We asked Sony UK to respond to reports that at least one user had received a partial refund from Amazon UK in compensation for the fact that part of the device's advertised functionality had been removed.
A Sony spokesman told us:
We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature. We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.
As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance where a feature will be disabled. Further enhancements are in the pipeline.
Users do have the choice whether to install the firmware upgrade and this is clearly explained to them at the time the firmware upgrade is made available for installation. Furthermore our terms and conditions clearly state that we have the right to revise the PS3's settings and features in order to prevent access to unauthorised or pirated content.
Whilst we fully understand why Sony has decided to remove this function from the PS3 OS, and that users are free not to install the firmware upgrade, we also understand that not installing the latest firmware will prevent users from accessing a number of online services including the Playstation Network.
We're also not quite clear how Sony's EULA can be used to contravene European Directive 1999/44/EC which quite clearly states that goods must be be "fit for the purpose which the consumer requires them and which was made known to the seller at the time of purchase".
We're pretty sure the proportion of users who bought a PS3 for its ability to run Linux is tiny compared to the many millions in circulation, but they are a vocal minority to say the least.
Our readers are asking us why Sony can, despite EU law, remove an advertised and documented part of the system to protect its own interests.
We'd also like to know whether Sony will be reimbursing Amazon and other retailers for any further refunds they are forced to offer under the law.
We've put these questions to Sony UK and await a response.
We have also spoken to the Office of Fair Trading and Consumer Direct who tell us they cannot comment until an official complaint has been made.

Froggyman The developer has released a new revision, the 481, to the Daedalus X64, the only emulator of the Nintendo 64 PSP on the scene. Although this release, introducing some minor changes necessary to improve the overall stability of the emulator, has been recognized as official by the development team, as was done for the previous build. I remember the revision 430, to start the homebrew you need a PSP with custom firmware 3.71M33 least.
Following the full changelog and download link.
Changelog:
Quote:
Rev481:
- Revert back sqrtf (vfpu_sqrtf is a lot slower, thx for pointing out Hardhat and IWN)
- A couple of minor changes
Rev480:
- Debug build compiles again
- Small clean up
Rev479:
- Huge code clean up
- More math VFPU

Six months ago, Sony launched the PSP Go in a desperate attempt to reboot the PSP brand. The sky is still blue. The grass is still green. The PSP still lags behind the Nintendo DS. Even in Japan, where the PSP has traditionally seen a great deal of success, the PSP Go has struggled.
Enterbrain(parent company of Famitsu) CEO Hirokazu Hamamura recently spoke about the PSP's performance in a marketing seminar. Though he has high hopes for the upcoming Monster Hunter 3, he seemed pretty cynical of the PSP. Hamamura said the PSP was destined to be a platform that would only be viable in Japan.
Hamamura was particularly down on the PSP Go. He said that the revision was worse than the Bandai-manufactured WonderSwan. Hamamura said the system's cramped design scheme made it hard to play games, especially the popular Monster Hunter games.
Hamamura predicted that Monster Hunter 3 would be the best selling PSP game of all time, and expects the game to sell 5 million copies over its lifetime.
Many analysts are predicting that Sony will announce a successor to the PSP at the upcoming E3 expo in June.

Recently, Sony slammed the door on Linux on the PS3, which ironically invited in a slew of hackers salivating for a challenge. The hacker community claimed taking functionality away was a call to arms. They wanted to retaliate against the corporate bad guys like in The Matrix.
But what about those other game systems they've hacked? What did Xbox 360, PSP, Wii, or the DS ever do to them? Remove any features? No. Nothing. Yet they are among the most heavily pirated systems right now.
So are these hackers really looking out for the best interests of the consumers? Maybe. But mostly not. It certainly justifies their actions in the public arena and garners them support. But the reason behind hacking is a simple truth that is not much discussed. Considering that the legality of it all lies in favor with Sony, who are the intellectual and copyright holders, hackers are committing felony by taking away profits from them and account for untold losses in sales. That is why hackers take on the Robin Hood persona in order to gain endorsement and validation from the public.
This is not to say that the existence of hackers is devoid of any benefit. Far from it. Now I'm not talking about getting free games here, although the public mistakenly perceives that as the sole purpose of hackers. It is not. It may be a small motivating force and the impact is undeniably enormous, but believe or not, hackers do what they do for deeper reasons. They are not here for the freeloaders. Their work does open the door to piracy, the negative consequences of which are constantly portrayed in the media, but hackers themselves do not profit from piracy.
For some hackers, their reward is notoriety. There may be those out there that honestly want to rally against corporate greed. But let's lay out the truth -- the simple and greatest motivation for hacking is simply the challenge and experience they get from cracking these seemingly unhackable systems. These accomplishments may translate into real jobs with the very same game companies they've "rebelled" against.
Hackers (a broad term I'll use to include homebrew programmers) provide an unheralded service to game companies that isn't readily nor officially recognized. They are the world's ultimate beta-testers, bug-finders, innovators, and super computer programmers that normal and legal avenues of talent search will not find. Corporate job head hunters can't post hacking skills in their job descriptions, but they sure can scour the internet (and essentially the world) for the 1 or 5th percentile of super intelligent programming geniuses and recruit them for work at Sony, MS, or Nintendo.
The ugly truth is that hackers have advanced the game industry. For all the damages they've done, they have repaid it by dragging game corporations into the digital age. Where would downloadable games and DLC be, without the homebrew and emulation scene? Where will voice chat, friends lists, and all those other features you've grown to love on Xbox LIVE be without the hackers? Save states were a common feature on emulators long before PSP finally implemented their version in a recent firmware update.
Does Sony have a right to take away features from PS3? Some may say yes -- a necessary evil to combat piracy. Low game sales kills your favorite game studios and independents. Microsoft regularly takes out the ban hammer instead of stripping any functionality though. It is certainly within each corporation's power to protect themselves however they see fit, but morally it is a gray area and may be a legal issue in of itself, one that likely will never be challenged in the court of law in a civil action suit, but does damage their credibility with consumers. Will taking out Linux work? No. What they have done is issue a challenge to hackers. Any everybody loves a challenge!

Shuhei Yoshida, head of SCE Worldwide Studios, has promised PS3 Move will deliver a range of experiences that will appeal to hardcore audiences.
Speaking to Edge, the exec said that the company's focus is split "50:50" between making Move appeal to a wider audience, and making traditional games work in a different way.
"The precision of the Move system allows game designers to create games as simulations and games with much more depth than other motion-based game experiences," he said.
"We are sure that hardcore gamers will appreciate and enjoy the challenge, with a much finer control over how they interact with the game and achieve greater success in those games.
"It was very interesting to hear comments by a certain journalist who tried Sports Champions' table tennis, who clearly enjoyed playing the game but complained about the lack of perceived one-to-one control at certain times," he added.
"During the GDC event we were showing the game's entry-level mode, which includes a lot of assists to ensure that everyone who plays the game for the first time can enjoy it. However, we plan to have in the final game a more simulation-based mode, which will allow expert users to really try out their skills. That promises to be a hardcore experience."
SCEE's head of developer services, Kish Hirani, also told Edge that the arrival of Move means he won't be playing RTS or FPS games on PC any longer. There's more through the link.

Wondering what Sony's going to call that PlayStation Move sub-controller -- you know, since "nunchuk" is already taken? Wonder no more. Sony part number CECH-ZCS1U just hit the FCC's database, and "Navigation Controller" is written in nice bold letters right there on the label. It's looking like this is official, as the Sony US website has been quietly updated with the change, and we think it makes a certain amount of sense, as most 3D games let you aim the camera with your dominant hand and relegate navigation to the other. Like the Motion Controller, Sony's opted for confidentiality on this one, meaning we won't have photos of the controller's juicy guts for six months, but hey, at least you already know what the outsides look like

God of War 3 was actually bigger during the alpha stages of production, director Stig Asmussen has revealed.
Speaking in an interview with Destructoid, Asmussen admitted that God of War III had to be substantially cut before release.
"It was around Alpha, and it was bigger," he said. "It was too big, and it wasn't as tight as it could possibly be. And we had to cut some things out, just to make sure that we got the quality across the board." Included in the pieces left on the cutting room floor were extra areas and even complete boss levels.
"We had a creature named Argus who had a hundred eyes, and he was a creature that was designed to have use the Helios head to defeat him," said Asmussen. "You had to make him close his eyes, and he'd get blinded. You couldn't defeat him unless he's blind, and then he'd go into this kind of blind rage, and you had to fight him. He was fun. It was fun."
"[Argus] was going to be another surprise thing. You know how we had kind of secrets where you could use the Helios head to find them? We were going to have those secrets paced out so you find four or five of those, and you'd get a chest in each one.
"Then in one, we were going to have basically a reveal where you'd expect to see a chest there -- setting up expectations and then breaking it -- and out of the darkness this Argus would leap out, and you'd have to fight him." If you haven't played this behemoth of a game yet, read our God of War 3 review to get an idea of just how massive it is. It's big.

PSP Post It is a useful plugin coder pyroesp, which allows us to see the brief notes in the XMB custom is that when running a game programming at certain times through a txt file in our memory stick. The operation is very simple, we decide the date and time in which we want our text to be displayed and scriviamolo into file predetermined time appear the "post it" warning.
To avoid accidental errors the plugin will alert you of any problems setting allowing us to quickly correct them, the only flaw is that you must restart the PSP to make your changes.

SONY just gave a statement about their decision to remove OtherOS from Playstation3 consoles via the new 3.21 firmware update.
Here the quote:
We are sorry if users of Linux or other operating systems are disappointed by our decision to issue a firmware upgrade which when installed disables this operating system feature.
A very poor sorry which won't help tons of people. Even official developers are mad about this decision but well, that's SONY.
We have made the decision to protect the integrity of the console and whilst mindful of the impact on Linux or other operating system users we nevertheless felt it would be in the best interests of the majority of users to pursue this course of action.
It's definitely NOT.
As you will be aware we have upgraded and enhanced functionality and features of the console by numerous firmware upgrades over time and this is a very rare instance where a feature will be disabled. Further enhancements are in the pipeline.
That won't help us neither.

To bad electronic terms and conditions
are not legal in European countries, eh'?
Well, all in all this was a step of SONY to piss off many users. For those who already upgraded it's to late, for those who did not recording to geohot, he will release a custom firmware 3.21 which will still have the OtherOS feature. Let's see what the future will bring.

Sony's PlayStation 3 has now sold over 5 million units in Japan, since launch in November 2006.

Gamesmaster has awarded Rockstar's GTA: Episodes from Liberty City a massive 97 percent in its latest edition ahead of the game's release on Friday.
The mag makes particular note of the way the DLC bundle manages to take GTA IV build on its foundations so effectively, "Both titles take GTA IV's canvas and paint their own colours right over the top until they look like a different piece of art altogether."
There's very little criticism to be had but Gamesmaster singled out 'The Ballad of Gay Tony' as the highlight of the package saying. "Gay Tony's colourful characters and ludicrously surreal scenarios take GTA back to the cartoonish highs of early titles such as Vice City, in the process steamrolling over the only real criticism you could levy at the original GTA IV."

Dengeki magazine publisher ASCII Media Works have announced a new Durarara!! adventure game for PSP via Dengeki’s game sites, titled Durarara!! 3way Standoff. No real details are available on the net just yet, except that the game will feature most of the original voice cast and will release in Summer 2010.
The latest issue of Dengeki Bunko, however, contains more information with screenshots, which super-tipper Anton sounded us off about from his ongoing trip to Japan. Durarara!! 3way Standoff is being developed by NetchuBiyori, who are also working on a Wii game, and a Spice & Wolf game for DS.
In the past, Dengeki have published other visual novel adventure games based on anime series under their DS Dengeki Bunko ADV — among others — brand. Baccano!, by the same author as Durarara!!, is one of them.

Since Samurai Shodown Sen is in stores, what is Xseed working on now? Apparently, something for PSP.
“We’re going to give you a lot more reasons to own a PSP soon, why not just give in to the temptation now,” an Xseed employee posted on Facebook in response to a Lunar: Silver Star Harmony inquiry.
“A lot more” sounds like more than one PSP game. Hmm… wonder what these PSP projects could be.

Gameshastra has teamed up with Future Publishing to give away free copies of its PSP Mini title, D-Cube Planet. The action-puzzler, usually worth £2.49, will be available to consumers through the second episode of Future’s innovative on-console games show FirstPlay, which goes live on PSN tomorrow.
“We’re delighted to partner with FirstPlay to offer its users a special free gift,” said Gameshastra CEO Prakash Ahjua. “D-Cube Planet has been a tremendous hit with consumers since its launch late last year, and we’re hopeful that many more people will fall for its charms with this fantastic promotion.”
FirstPlay editor-in-chief Tim Clark added: “Each week, our focus is to show gamers the most exciting things on PlayStation systems, and thanks to Gameshastra, we can throw open the world of PSP Minis to gamers who haven’t experience a game like D-Cube Planet themselves.
“The response to our launch episode has been great, and we’re actively listening to gamers, through direct feedback from their PS3 and our social media channels. FirstPlay will continue to evolve, and early adopters can help us shape the future of Europe’s only on-console interactive show.”

A video game adaptation of comic book movie Kick-Ass will hit PSN on April 29th - and is fully playable on PS3.
Developed and published by WHA Entertainment, the title will cost $14.99 in the US - so you can expect it for around £8.
It's been rated M for Mature by the ESRB.
The title is a third-person 3D action fighting game, where the player can play and control modern day super heroes based on the super characters found in the film of the same name.
Gamers will be able to play as the three primary characters in the movie - Kick-Ass, Hit Girl, and Big Daddy.
Kick-Ass follows the story of the movie, and features multiple environments within New York City.
There's 12 story missions, plus two bonus rounds. And the publisher promises 'plenty of gore'. Joy.
Multiplayer local co-op gameplay is also available - but not online, it appears.
Bonus points also unlock the complete first edition of the Kick Ass comic book.
"We are excited to provide players a closer look at the gameplay and characters involved in Kick-Ass," said Howard Horowitz, Founder and CEO of WHA Entertainment.
"Kick-Ass is set to deliver non-stop superhero action to gamers, and what could be more fun than getting to play as one of the three super heroes based on the super characters featured in the movie?"

You may recognize Milestone for their shooting games like Ilvelo and Ultimate Shooting Collection. Did you know they make arcade fighting games too?
No, you say? Then take a look at Project Cerberus. It’s a Naomi based arcade game with transforming heroes (think Super Sentai) that’s coming to PSP.
Milestone opened a teaser site for Project Cerberus, which notes the home version has a story mode.
Project Cerberus isn’t Milestone’s only fighting game. They also have Twinkle Queen for Wii, which features girls from various eroge series.

Sony says that it has no intention of reimbursing retailers if they offer fat PS3 users partial refunds because of the removal of the Install Other OS function.
Last week, the first PS3 user successfully secured a partial refund from Amazon UK as compensation for the removal of the ability to run Linux on the console.
The punter quoted European law in order to persuade the online retailer that the goods he had bought in good faith were no longer fit for purpose because of the enforcement of firmware update 3.21, which meant that users who chose to keep the Other OS functionality would lose the ability to play the latest games or connect to the PlayStation Network.
Sony was accused of contravening the Sale of Goods Act and more than one forum poster across the web suggested that a class action suit might be in order.
But Sony is standing fast, insisting it has done nothing wrong as the company's PR head honcho David Wilson told us. "We do understand the frustration a small number of consumers may feel at SCE's decision to provide an upgrade to the firmware to disable the Linux operating system but we refute any suggestion that this action is in any way a contravention of the terms of Sale of Goods Act," he said.
The fact that the ability to install Linux was heavily promoted when the console was launched by Sony Computer Entertainment (the word 'computer' is important here) seems to hold little sway for the company or its spokesman.
"The PS3 is first and foremost a games console and our marketing materials for the console reflect this," said Wilson. "The console packaging and the in-box manual for the console do not refer to the use of Linux on the console. Rather, the console packaging states that the product's design and specifications are subject to change without notice and that the system software within the console is subject to a limited licence between SCE and the consumer, and this licence permits SCE to update the system software and services offered from time to time."
The fact of the matter is that no end of complex Terms and Conditions, or even the most draconian End User License Agreements (EULA) have the power to override the law of the land, and Sony is fully aware of this. The company knows that it is protected by those same laws.
"The provision in the Sale of Goods Act which requires an item to be fit for a purpose made known by the consumer to the retailer prior to purchase and confirmed by the retailer applies only to the contract between the retailer and the consumer," Sony told us. "The decision by Amazon to give a consumer a partial refund is clearly between Amazon and the consumer, but we do not expect the decision to have a legal basis and we have no plans to compensate retailers."
So it looks like fat PS3 owners have three choices:
1. Continue using Linux but give up the ability to download games from the PlayStation store, play disk-based PS3 games which require version 3.21 or higher, play Blu-Ray Disks which require profile updates or download movie.
2. Give up Linux altogether and use the PS3 the way Sony now wants you to use it.
3. Get an £84 refund from your retailer and put the money towards an XBox.
There is, of course, a fourth way. You could wait for the hackers who caused these shenanigans in the first place to release a fiddled firmware update which would allow you to do all of the above.

News/release from lazboy1000
I finally finished the app! (yay) Anybody want to try out the BETA? Leave your feedback below in the comments.
How to use it
1. Plug in your PSP and enable USB connection.
2. You need to select what disk your PSP is. Open the application called "Disk Utility" which is located in Applications >> Utilities >> Disk Utility. Locate your PSP's disk, right-click it and select Information. Now look at the Disk Identifier. It should be disk# where # is a number 1 through 10. (If you see disk1s1 or similar, look at the disk1 part. Ignore the s1 part.) Now select this in the Magic Memory Stick application.
3. Choose which button you want the DC8 menu to be launched with. You can choose the L and R triggers or have it be launched automatically by selecting "NOTHING".
4. (Option isn't available in the BETA version) Choose whether you want the GEN-D2 installer to be in your Games folder.
5. Before clicking "Make the Magic Memory Stick" button, you need to click on the "Click Me First!" button. This will unmount the PSP so the application can inject the IPL.
6. Click the button "Create the Magic Memory Stick" to create it!

Having announced in September last year that it was developing a portable version of PS3 Home for PSP users, Sony has now confirmed that it has scrapped the project.
Dubbed PlayStation Room, the service was supposed to offer a virtual world that allowed for portable interaction on the go, sharing pictures and blog posts and creating avatars.
It was scheduled to arrive by the end of 2009.
However, Andriasang spotted an update to Room’s official site stating that all development of the service has been cancelled, bringing the closed beta to an end. No reason was given, though Sony added that it would be using the feedback gained from the beta for future projects.
The natural question to ask is whether its demise is linked to the performance of PSP or the performance of PlayStation Home?

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey has been telling investors good things about the 'new' EA.
Encouraged by the publisher's current franchise portfolio, Hickey said EA has a number of "mega franchises" on its hands and potentially a "Modern Warfare killer" in the form of Battlefield.
"The company has been plagued over the last several years by franchise fatigue and new IP market fragility; examples include: Madden, NFS, Mirrors Edge, Army of Two, Spore, etc., which we believe they have stabilised and / or eliminated from their forward game slate," he wrote in an investor note.
"In addition, we're encouraged by the strong sales performance from emerging mega franchises like Mass Effect, Dragon Age and Battlefield (we believe a potential Modern Warfare killer).
"Finally," he added, "we remain optimistic for potential upside from games like Medal of Honor (a prior power franchise), Bulletstorm, Dead Space 2 and the unannounced new IP (potential fiscal '12 release) from the newly formed Respawn Entertainment studio through EA Partners."
You have to agree with the man to a point - EA's got a shedload of tasty titles on the market and in the works.

Sony Europe's PlayTV peripheral for the PlayStation 3 is to see the addition of new social network features, including Facebook.
In a brief post made by PlayStation Network product manager James Thorpe on the official PlayStation blog it was indicated that Sony's Cambridge studios have already begun testing some of the new features.
The public update is due "later this year", with Thorpe promising "links to the world's most popular social network site, Facebook" and "other great enhancements to PlayTV and brand new features".
Sony may be attempting to emulate some of the social features present in the Xbox 360 support for Sky digital services, which allow users to watch video content communally and chat via Xbox Live.
The PlayTV hardware add-on is only available in Europe and other regions that use the same television technology. The peripheral acts as a digital television receiver and digital video recorder, with UK sales put at 85,000 units by September 2008.
An equivalent peripheral named torne was revealed for Japan earlier in the year, but despite using similar television technology no release has yet been announced for North America.

Sony is to release its first Sony Bravia 3D TV in the UK this June and, alongside it, four 3D games which will be made available for free to initial adopters of the Bravia HX803.
The TV will feature full 1080p high definition, 200Hz high frame rate technology and a 'simulated 3D' option, which converts a 2D picture into a simulated 3D one. It will also come with 'high speed precision' technology Sony says minimises crosstalk - the mixing the 3D images assigned to the left and right eyes.
It will require users to wear 3D glassses, equipped with shutter technology, which come in a range of colours and in adult and child sizes. Battery life for the specs is estimated to be around 100 hours.
The HX803 will be the first model released, but Sony said that it would be followed by additional models within weeks, including the LX903.
It also confirmed it has timed the launch of four games to coincide with the release of the HX803 - all games that are being re-released through the PlayStation Network with 3D optimisation.
The games will be Wipeout HD, Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, PAIN and Super Stardust HD, which will be made available to early adopters - either in full or, in the case of MotorStorm, as a single level demo - as part of the HX803 package.
PS3 owners will be able to upgrade their PS3s to made them 3D game-compatible with a firmware upgrade that will be released prior to the TVs, said Sony. While a further firmware update to make the PS3 3D movie compatible will follow at some point this year.
Sony has previously said that 3D is a "no brainer" for the company and it has committed to creating the first dedicated 24/7 3D television network in partnership with Discovery Communications and IMAX.
The company will also film 25 of this year's World Cup matches in 3D, in conjunction with FIFA, and an official 3D World Cup film which will be released on Blu-ray 3D at some point in 2010.
The new TV is available to pre-order through Sony's stores now. The only prices currently available are guide ones, which put the TV at £2200 for the 40" model and £3500 for the 60".

Sony has updated the PlayStation shops with all manner of treats - and the promises of the GTA IV downloadable episodes, which are both due to go live tomorrow.
The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony will be sold for £13.99 apiece. They're also sold in the boxed Episodes from Liberty City package in shops.
As you may remember, the first episode thrusts you into the rugged, grain-filtered world of a biker fraternity, inviting you to arc gracefully through the streets of Liberty City while moaning about life and reluctantly getting neck-deep into the drugs and murder bizniz.
The latter, meanwhile, is the more upbeat and openly hilarious tale of a nightclub impresario and your attempts to keep him on the vaguely straight and narrow via explosive-shelled shotguns, base-jumping out of helicopters and cheerily puerile conversation.

Sony has announced that Everybody's Tennis will be released for PSP this summer.

Sony has said to expect a demo version on the PlayStation Store around launch.
Check out our Everybody's Tennis PSP screenshot gallery to see how it looks, or check out the trailer below.
Oh, and if the name rings a bell, cast your mind (and your web browser) back a couple of years and you'll find our Everybody's Tennis review for PS2 has lots of details on the sort of thing to expect

Any seasoned gamer who owns a Wii is probably familiar with this scenario. Family has come to visit and so you bust out the “Wii Sports” and start in with a round of boxing. You, with years of gaming under your belt, hold the motion controllers in your hands and punch the air with careful precision and thoughtful timing. Meanwhile, your 6-year-old niece grips the controllers with pint-sized zeal and flails her arms with all the thought and precision of a goose on fire … and thusly proceeds to beat you at this game time and time again.
Playing goofy games with friends and family is fun and watching people flail about is always amusing. But if you’re a gamer’s gamer, it’s not exactly the kind of experience that’s going to sell you on motion controls. As soon as your niece leaves, you may just shove the Wii into the closet to gather dust.
Nintendo’s motion controls have done the seemingly impossible: They’ve turned non-gamers into gamers in droves and they’ve made video gaming a social, family affair like never before. But meanwhile, seasoned, adult gamers — the hardcore gamers specifically — have abandoned the Wii in droves, aggravated by the lack of precision in the controls, not to mention the lack of games that cater to their interests.

Electronic Entertainment Design and Research analyst Jesse Divnich told IGN that Activision could have priced the Stimulus Package higher than $15 and still achieve its record first week sales.
"The accepted commercial success benchmark for DLC for a console game is 20% of the install base," said Divnich. "The stimulus map pack was able to reach that benchmark in just a week, and should reach 30 – 35% (of Modern Warfare 2 owners purchasing the add-on) through its lifetime,"
"It is evident that 2.5 million Xbox Live players felt that $15 was either just right or a good bargain and given the enormous quantity sold (2.5 million), I'd argue that Activision could have charged more and still obtain the same results," he added.
Divnich said the $5 price increase may pose a problem for Activision, however, as it continues to release more downloadable content in the future.
"Unfortunately, now Modern Warfare 2 consumers are anchored with the calculation that 5 maps equal $15, so deviating from that will be difficult for future Modern Warfare 2 DLC content," he explained. "However, Activision could employ some psychological tricks, maybe 5 new maps (no remakes) for $20? Or 5 maps and 2 skins for $20?"
"Whatever the case, you can bet that DLC prices are going to rise to the point where pricing reaches its most optimum in relation to demand," Divnich added.
Divnich said it comes down to what consumers feel is the best value proposition for their dollars, and that choice will ultimately decide what publishers charge for downloadable content.
"Of course the rate hike from $10 to $15 was met with many complaints from consumers, but the commercial success makes it evident that gamers felt the price tag was a good deal," said Divnich.
"It's not a rate hike on a necessity such as electricity or water where consumers have no choice but to accept higher prices. Consumers have a choice and there are plenty of available options if you felt that $15 was too much for 5 maps."
"The consumer has spoken," he said.

Hideo Kojima has revealed that the Western version of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be the 'uncut' version, much to his disappointment.
Kojima revealed on Twitter last night that the PSP Metal Gear had a scene removed from the Japanese version in order to keep it from getting an 18 rating equivalent in the country.
Kojima says that the PSP is supported by a younger audience and so during Peace Walker's production the staff made the effort to avoid 'grotesque' scenes.
However, there's "a certain scene", a "standard element" that's "absolutely necessary for MGS," that apparently could not make it under a 15 rating equivalent in Japan, so they had it removed.
The European and North American versions of the game are the original version without the adjustments made for the Japanese version.
Kojima expectedly isn't happy about the need to remove content from his game. He wrote: "There's tolerance for fantasy games, but for games where you show war or real violence between people, you apparently can't complain about anything. With this, it seems impossible to communicate something through games."

Namco Bandai has confirmed that it will distribute highly acclaimed action role-playing game Demon's Souls in EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.
A spiritual successor to the little known - in the West at least - King's Field, the PlayStation 3 exclusive was developed by From Software and originally published by Sony in Japan.
The game's high difficulty level and expected niche appeal left an eighth month gap between the game's original Japanese release in February 2009 and its North American launch from specialist publisher Atlus.
Following extremely positive reviews from the Western press, including a 9/10 score from sister site Eurogamer, the game went on to sell triple Atlus' original expectations.
With no Europe presence though Atlus was unable to publish the game outside of North America and the game has remained in limbo until Namco Bandai's announcement of a June 25 release date.
In the manner of other cult Japanese imports, such as Sega's recent Yakuza 3, the game will initially be sold in Europe only as part of a limited edition retail pack. This will contain a soundtrack CD, new artbook and strategy guide.
"The game is exactly the kind of quality experience with which we are continuing to grow the Namco Bandai Games portfolio of titles, and we will be working hard to ensure it’s at least as much of a success in our markets as it has already proven to be elsewhere," said Olivier Comte, vice president of marketing, sales & publishing at Namco Bandai.

Hello, this is a trivia game I designed to help people memorize Japanese words. It's quite simple, a word pops up in English and you just need to translate it in Japanese. I also integrated a Multi-tap style text entry system to input the text. This is my first attempt at programming, I plan to add more lessons and features in the future once I improve.
Notes:
You can reveal the answer by Holding the R button and pressing Circle. Pressing the Select button will switch the keypad mode. For a spacebar, Hold R and tap forward. Championship mode still buggy

If you want you and your loved ones looking like the family pictured alongside this text, sitting in front of the TV gazing at 3D dolphins emanating from you PlayStation 3 through your television console, your best bet is to envision Ecco, not Flipper.* According to TechRadar, Sony has clarified that the summer firmware update to enable 3D applies to games only, and that 3D Blu-ray movie support will come with a second update due out later this year. We haven't been able to confirm the announcement ourselves, but suddenly, that freebie copy of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 3D isn't looking so tantalizing.
* Hypothetically speaking, of course. We have no confirmation on a 3D version of Sega's Ecco the Dolphin or Season 3 of Flipper, featuring "The Most Expensive Sardine in the World."

Newly released:
Episodes from Liberty City is the brand new Grand Theft Auto, containing two complete games – “The Ballad of Gay Tony” & “The Lost and The Damned” – together in one box.
The Ballad of Gay Tony - The Ballad of Gay Tony injects Liberty City with an overdose of guns, glitz, and grime. As Luis Lopez, part-time hoodlum and full-time assistant to legendary nightclub impresario Tony Prince (aka “Gay Tony”), players will struggle with the competing loyalties of family and friends, and with the uncertainty about who is real and who is fake in a world in which everyone has a price.
The Lost & Damned - In The Lost and Damned, experience Liberty City as Johnny, a veteran member of The Lost, a notorious biker gang. Johnny has been creating business opportunities for The Lost in Liberty City but his first loyalty must be to the patch he wears on his back and to Billy Grey, the club’s President. However, when Billy returns from rehab hell-bent on bloodshed and debauchery, Johnny finds himself in the middle of a vicious turf war with rival gangs for control of a city torn apart by violence and corruption. Can the brotherhood survive?

Jeff Lait has released a new version of Powder for Various Consoles
To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.
For more information about roguelikes there is the Rogue Basin, a Wiki documenting this genre, and the Temple of the Roguelike, a newsite tracking developments in the field.
You wouldn't know if from the change log, but I have been hard at work on POWDER for the last few months.
I do have new base 10 and base 12 versions of Akoi's tileset, along with corresponding fonts, but they aren't yet enabled in the default builds.
Fireball and Cloudkill always explode at the end of their trajectory.
When you gain permanent intrinsics by evolving or lichifying, relevant temporary intrinsics will be cleared, preventing you from having a silver-tolerant lich. (Nathan Bogue)
Timestamps on the final character dump and the description of how long you lived will now match. (Deozaan)
You can wish for bones and corpses without them instantly dissolving. (Garron)
You can no longer fetch items that have teleport fixed. (Eris Discordia)
When a creature (un)polys into a gargantuan creature, it will now also push away monsters in addition to crushing walls. (Nathan Bogue)
Lich-form creatures that are undead no longer report it being your evil that was useless. (garron Bailey)
When you name an item, the menu defaults to naming the type rather than the specific as this is the usual scenario.
The floor of the kiwi room is now the proper floor tile.
Controled teleport onto the square you are already standing no longer reports that you are blocked, but that you decide to stay put.
Mysterious mapping of rooms fixed. Thanks to Kender and Mental Mouse for tracking this down - it has been annoying me for six years or so! (David Damerell, Eilu, Kender, Mental Mouse)
buildall.sh should work with --use-home-dir again. (garron)
The option menu no longer has Load. Instead it has Quit, which prompts you if you meant this. Loading is now only done from the main menu.
No experience for killing your pets.
Confirmation prompt if starting New Game with active saved game as one can easily accidentally overwrite it.
Some spells when mistargeted no longer waste your mana. Not all, so remain vigilant.
Cancelling your choice in the Wish menu no longer costs a turn.
Fix potential crash when you are killed by splash damage from a thrown item.

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2010/04/16/...a-v2-released/
Vosman, PSN****er… It gets your PSP back on PSN — PlayStation Store access and online gaming… Don’t get it twisted though. As noted below, Socom FTB 3, you’re still required to purchase a license key. You can’t play online without one. I guess more games are following suit. But hey! Now you can actually get on PSN to download and play them titles. That’s pretty awesome. Kudos Vosman!
If you continue to be prompted with a message saying an update is required, back out and try disabling any other active plugins. I’ve discovered PSN****er doesn’t play well with RemoteJoyLite.
PSN****er Beta v2: (Translated)
supports automatic login (auto-sign in supported).
disable the menu hotkey.
using the new system function modification method is no longer a simple string that changes PSNabler.
Problems with the first edition: (Translated)
Dynasty Warriors download joint raid with the letter can not, network warfare can not, it is because the game has additional protection, need money to buy a license key, and then activated in the PSN account management, similar to the game There are seals 3, Phantasy Star 2 and so on.
PSN most shops can not download the DEMO game, because these games to the machine authentication, game certification will appear (80109d80) errors, unexplained, it may try to use the MEDIA GO certified machine, or to rise to 6.20 official firmware, certification good lower and lower back.
Some of the unit is a mess of connection error, I do not know the reason why I never appeared. PSP-2000 with the Japanese version of the machine, the system 5.50GEN-D3 final version, 5.00M33-6 also tried, no problem.

For the weekend, compiled fresh by way of MaX SLayeR: Wololo’s, m0skit0’s, and ab5000’s Half Byte Loader 1.1 BETA Revision 31. What’s new? So much, that metaphorically speaking, it’ll blow your mind to smithereens. It has a functional menu now to select and load whatever homebrew, some 6.XX-related issues have been fixed; mind you, many still exist… It’s beta. But it’s up for grabs and ready for your testing.
Notes:
If you have problems with the homebrew loader menu, namely on 6.20, then dig this… Copy whatever homebrew you want to try to ms0:/hbl/game. That’ll bypass the menu and attempt to load the homebrew directly.
In ms0:/hbl/config there are files, files named imports.config_XXX, where XXX is a firmware version. Whatever firmware version you are running, copy (or rename) imports.config_XXX to imports.config.

More fuel has been added to the PS3 Conviction fire after the Ubisoft customer support site listed Splinter Cell Conviction under the PS3 format.
This comes after a Ubisoft Montreal developer had Splinter Cell Conviction listed for the PS3 on his CV late last month.
Xbox 360 users are, of course, already playing the game.

The success of Street Fighter IV has proved that 2D (or 2.5D) fighters very much have a place in the modern marketplace, so claims that Capcom is to revive its Marvel vs Capcom franchise come as little surprise.
Planet Xbox 360, as spotted by VG247, reports that Marvel vs Capcom 3 is being lined up for a disc-based retail release on Xbox 360 and PS3.
The decision is all the more interesting at a time when the industry is seeing an increasing number of franchises turn their attentions toward digital retail. MvC is heading in the other direction, however, as MvC2 was released digitally on PSN and Xbox Live Arcade last year.
Confirmed characters, according to the site, include Spider-Man, The Hulk, Wolverine and Magneto, with a very high number of total playable characters promised. The release date is said to be either late 2010 or early 2011.
The first cross-over between the two brands came in 1996 arcade release X-Men vs Street Fighter, though the first proper release in the series as we know it, Marvel vs Capcom, arrived two years later on Dreamcast and PlayStation.

Sony has announced the official title for the PlayStation Move fighting game unveiled at this year's Game Developers Conference.
Turns out it's not called Motion Fighter after all. According to producer John McLaughlin, writing on the US PlayStation blog, the game will be called The Fight: Lights Out.
"We've conducted a ton of motion capture to ensure that every punch, every hit reaction, every dirty move and every hard-hitting knockout makes the player feel right in the thick of the action," he promised. Apparently you'll be able to "throw punches with total precision", using the PlayStation Move controller to pull of jabs, hooks, uppercuts and even a "two-handed ear drum burst".
"This is The Fight: Lights Out, and you can fight any way you want to - just make sure you win!" McLaughlin added. A release date for the game has yet to be announced.

In case you hadn't heard, Beautiful Game Studios is working on a PSP Minis adaptation of Championship Manager.
The game's due out "very soon", according to brand manager Tim Hodges' post on the European PlayStation blog. He said to "stay tuned" to hear about a price.
Unsurprisingly, this PSP Minis incarnation of Championship Manager 2010 won't feature-match the full PC game. And it's not supposed to.
Hodges said the handheld game allows managers to tinker with squads, alter tactics, scout for new players and set training schedules. That was all he mentioned, although there's bound to be much more on offer.
Championship Manager's arrival on handheld comes as rival studio Sports Interactive reveals an iPhone version of Football Manager. Football Manager has tried PSP as a platform before.
Let's hope Square Enix, Dynamo and BGS find more success there.

The first game was lauded as the flag-bearer of high-end PC gaming, and developer Crytek has admitted that thewre were times when it feared that bringing the sequel Crysis 2 to consoles was an ‘impossible’ task.
“Back then we would have been limited with our knowledge of 3D and experience with CryEngine,” Crytek CEO Cervat Yerli told CVG.
“Today, we have much more experience with the technology and the bleeding edge experience on PC helped us to trickle down the engine, step-by-step. So we were looking at every high-end feature and said ‘how can we bring this to console?’. I said to our technology guys, we have no choice. It has to come. How do we do it?
“Instead of telling me which ones you can and can't do, whenever it looked impossible, I said find another solution. So that forced a lot of optimisation and rethinking.”
Yerli added that the lessons it learnt with the console game ultimately lead to a better PC version, too.

The Digital Foundry blog took an in-depth look at how Sony is introducing 3D technology to PlayStation 3 games. They give a step-by-step description of how the system generates a 3D frame (or rather, a pair of frames), and the graphical hurdles that need be to overcome to ensure the games look good. The article also discusses some of the subtle effects 3D technology can have on gameplay:
"'One interesting thing came through in the immersion aspect was that in the first-person camera view, it felt so much more like being there. Typically when most people play MotorStorm, something like 90 per cent play in the third-person view,' Benson explains. 'As soon as we put the 3D settings in place, the first-person view became a lot more popular, a lot more people were using that view. This could indicate that 3D could perhaps change the standards, if you like.' ... 'We found that in the first-person view the game is giving you all the sorts of cues that you're used to in normal driving: speed perception, the ability to judge distances, things like that. It's far easier to avoid track objects.' The insertion of true stereoscopic 3D into MotorStorm also brings about a new sense of appreciation of the scale and size of the game world and the objects within it."

Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi has claimed that he will be left "angry" when work on Gran Turismo 5 is finally complete - and predicted he won't be satisfied with the final product.
Sony has delayed the release of GT5 numerous times - and racing fans are still waiting on a release date.
A firm date is expected at E3 in June - with all eyes pointed towards the end of 2010.
"I'd probably be relieved [to finish development] in terms of having fulfilled my responsibilities, but I may be angry at the same time," Yamauchi told the latest issue of CVG sister mag PSM3.
"As it has been with all of the releases so far, I'm never fully satisfied with what I create." His comments come as part of a eight-page racing preview spectacular in May's PSM3, which also features F12010, Modnation racers, Blur, Split/Second and more.

Users on the PlayStation Network have been reporting some serious issues regarding PlayStation Network code generator websites, these generator websites have reportedly hacked into people's personal info through PSN. Unfortunately, our Ironstar comrade Dom Guerrera was a victim of this new attack against PlayStation Network users. In his situation a credit card stored on his account was charged around $350 worth of PlayStation Network content that he didn't authorize. There has been a slew of chain letters circling around the PlayStation Network with URLs linking to these code generator websites; it is believed that these websites are loop hole hacks to obtain your personal information, opening them could be dangerous. Inside of the chain letter reported to effect your PlayStation Network account there is a link to a code generator website for "free" PlayStation Network content. Details on this situation are still coming in, we have contacted Sony for a response.
If you believe you have opened one of these tainted messages immediately do the following:
Delete your credit card information off of your PlayStation Network account using the official PlayStation website.
Change your email and password for your PlayStation Network account using the official PlayStation Network website.
Contact Sony PlayStation customer service 1800-345-7669, also contact your credit or debit card customer service representative.
Check your email tied to your PlayStation Network account for suspicious purchases.
As a precaution to these unknown hacks on against PlayStation Network users we recommend that you:
Delete any random chain messages, even if they are from friends. There is a way to view a small segment of messages sent to you on the PlayStation Network. If you suspect a message to be a chain letter containing the hack view the message (WITHOUT OPENING IT) by pressing (x) twice on the sent user's profile.
Block users who send you chain messages.
Contact Dom Guerrera through his profile if you think your situation is similar to his.
*Update*
This issue does not involve general chain letters sent around PSN, the article is referring to chain letters containing PSN code generator website URLs specifically. Our colleague did not enter any credit card information into any malicious website. His PSN account information including his credit card info was somehow obtained through the PlayStation Network, because he opened the message sent to him. More PSN users have stepped forward and reported suspicious purchases appearing on their billing transactions. If you haven't noticed any suspicious activity on your account but you have opened one of these specific chain messages or went to a malicious code generator website on your PS3 we strongly recommend that you take precautions.

On IndustryGamers, EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich examines the economic impact of Modern Warfare 2's "Stimulus Package" on consumers, business and the future of DLC. He notes that "as an economist" he's glad a publisher tested the boundaries of DLC pricing, as millions of consumers (around 25 percent of MW2 owners) proved willing to drop $15 on the map pack. He points out that "if consumers deem it unfair for companies to overcharge their products, it is similarly unfair for businesses to unknowingly under-price their products."
However, Divnich wonders about the long-term implications of continued high-priced MW2 DLC, should Activision go that route. He suggests that consumers could leave the Call of Duty "circle" for games like Battlefield: Bad Company 2, where the cost for new content over time appears to be lower. He also posits that "consumers could avoid the next iteration of the Call of Duty franchise, since again, cost of dedicated ownership is now much higher." Divnich explains that the current "situation" between Infinity Ward and Activision may cloud core consumer purchases of future DLC and the franchise, as well, compared to if everything had remained -- on the surface, at least -- hunky-dory.

The mysterious Yakuza-related "Project K" isn't just another sequel after all. In an article in the latest Famitsu, summarized by Andriasang, director Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed it to be spinoff for PSP, taking place in the game's customary "Kamurocho" location but not starring series protagonist Kazuma Kiryu.
In fact, the hero of this spinoff isn't a gangster at all, but an 18-year-old "delinquent" named Tatsuya Ukyou. The new perspective is indicative of Nagoshi's interest in reaching younger audiences with this game, to deliver a message encouraging kids to be more aggressive (which, we're sure, is more about being assertive than being violent). The gameplay will also be presented differently, with a "more in-your-face feel" to the combat and gameplay elements that Nagoshi thinks are expected of handheld games. Does that mean it's going to be Yakuza Monster Hunter, with groups of four teenagers taking down giant loan sharks?

The Japanese weekly magazine Famitsu has given a perfect score (40/40) to Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and people are already up in arms about it. Why? Because Famitsu has a tie-in with Hideo Kojima's upcoming PSP game and the magazine appears in the game.
Kotaku even went as far as writing an heated and article titled "Do Not Trust This Magazine's Review Scores" that could be only defined as bordering on libel. This, of course, isn't even the first time that the American website slings mud at their Japanese colleagues. They have published several articles (like this one) in the past with that sole purpose, for some reason that I personally fail to understand.
Is it because they normally give more attention (and higher scores) to Japanese games and less to western games? I wouldn't be surprised, since for a western-centric site like Kotaku this must be a serious affront.
On a side note, I find it really funny that Kotaku and many other websites posted several articles denouncing how MGS: Peace Walker has several instances if in-game advertisement, when such deals are very, very common in the western gaming industry, so much that there even are several agencies dedicated just to deal with that. But that when that happens in a western game, it seems to be unimportant. When it happens in a Metal Gear game looks like it's "big news".
Anyway, if it wasn't sad enough to see gaming journalists slinging mud at their colleagues ("you should trust us! Not them!"), it's downright shameful that Kotaku isn't even alone in this crusade.
So what should have Famitsu done? They shouldn't have reviewed at all one of the most awaited (and best looking) incoming games for PSP because they have an advertisement deal with Kojima Production? Or maybe they should have automatically given it a lower score to avoid being criticized by Kotaku and by the other western "me too!" journalists that will follow? I don't think so.

3D TV has been one of the biggest technology stories of the year so far and Thursday morning (22 April) saw the first ones actually going on sale in the UK.
They've been available in the US and Japan for several months, but as expected they're not cheap. The price of the first TV released is £1,799 - and there are lots of other bits of kit needed to get the right set-up.
A pair of the 3D glasses this system uses cost £150, a 3D Blu-ray DVD player is around £350 and a compatible HDMI cable is £50.
For 28-year-old Matt Rajah though - the very first person in the queue on Thursday morning - it's worth the money: "Well I think it's clearly the future of where television is going.
"I saw Avatar with my friends in 3D at the cinema and really loved that film. I'm also an avid gamer as well so I'm hoping to exploit some of the features of the TV through gaming."
At the moment, the platforms available for 3D TV are limited. There are no 3D television channels and there are only a relatively small selection of 3D DVDs and video games.
John Kempner, the chief TV buyer for John Lewis, reckons that will change: "It is all about content. There will be more 3D movies coming along on Blu-ray. But more importantly Sky will be launching its 3D channel in around September time we think.
Video gaming is the other area where there'll be a lot of 3D content available, which I think will be important
John Kempner, chief TV buyer for John Lewis
"Video gaming is the other area where there'll be a lot of 3D content available, which I think will be important too."
That video game content is seen by some in the industry as a key driver of 3D TV sales.
It's also worth pointing out that as well as 3D capability, the televisions going on sale also offer the latest 2D high-definition technology.
While some forecasts predict only modest sales this year, most experts believe it's the future and that 3D TVs will sell in much larger numbers once the content improves and the price comes down.

When the PlayStation blog said firmware 3.30 -- you know, the one that "preps" the console for added 3D support (games for now, not movies) -- was "coming soon," we figured that meant some indeterminate day or week ahead. Not so; we just turned on our Sony consoles and, lo and behold, we got a new update sent our way. There's nothing you can do with the third dimension at this point, but take solace in a handful of Trophy enhancements. And Linux support? Don't be silly, it's not coming back.

Final Fight: Double Impact may be a collection of retro games, but some owners of the PS3 version have discovered that it is, at heart, a little too modern. The game will not run unless the user is signed into an online PSN account. If you try to load up Double Impact while not signed in, you'll just get a curt "Sign into PlayStation Network. (80029516)" message on the screen. (The Xbox 360 version launches without issue, even when not signed into Xbox Live.)
While it may not be a big deal to most of us who are signed into PSN whenever we use our PS3s, it does make us wonder why Capcom or Sony don't allow people to play the game, even in single-player or local multiplayer, without an internet connection. We've contacted both parties about the issue. Anyone else appreciating the irony of having to be connected to the internet to play games made before most of us knew what an internet was?

Thailand based Sanuk Games has an interesting PlayStation Mini game coming out tomorrow called Hysteria Project. Similar to Night Trap, Hysteria Project is entirely filmed. You pay attention to the surroundings, make decisions, and watch what happens. Think of it as choose your own adventure on a PSP or PlayStation 3.
Hysteria Project begins with you tied up in a wooden hut. How did you get there? Will you make it out alive? You’ll have to spend $1.99 to purchase the game from the PlayStation Store to find out.
While Hysteria Project isn’t even out, Yan Marchal, CEO of Sanku Games, says a sequel is planned. “A sequel is planned. The release date has yet to be defined. Stay tuned,” Marchal said to a PlayStation Blog commenter.

As reported by Joystiq, the PS3/PlayStation Network version of Final Fight Double Impact features a rather restrictive piece of digital rights management. In order to launch the game, you have to be logged into the PlayStation Network and if you're not, the game refuses to launch. This could be written off as a bug of some kind except for the fact that the error message that crops up tells you to sign in, suggesting Sony/Capcom intentionally included this 'feature.' Granted, you do have to log into the PlayStation Network to buy the title but as one commentator pointed out, logging in once does not mean you'll be logged in all the time. Curiously, the 360 version has no such restrictions, so you can play the game whether you're online or offline. But annoying as this feature may be, there may be method in Sony's madness.

Sony has unleashed VidZone TV on PlayStation 3.
This offers over 100 pre-programmed, telly-style music channels to watch for free.
Apparently the idea is to do away with the need to spend time building playlists. You simply pick a themed-channel - seventies, eighties, hip-hop, dance, etc. - and let it play.
Previously VidZone required you search and compile your own on-demand playlists and put in a bit of effort. You can still do that, but that would be like actually walking around a supermarket instead of ordering online! Idiot!

It was only a couple of days ago that Sony flicked the switch on 3D compatibility for the PS3 -- albeit without retail games that can yet exploit it -- so what better time to dig into the nitty gritty details of the company's implementation of the third dimension? Digital Foundry have done just that, starting off with a discussion of how Sony translated WipEout HD from 2D into 3D. Noting that the original version ran at 1080p, Sony's senior development manager Simon Benson explains that notching resolution down to 720p opened up some pixel processing overhead (one 1080p stream requires nearly 2.1 million pixels, whereas a duo of 720p images is around 1.85 million in total), while reducing the refresh rate to 30Hz allowed the devs the breathing room to complete the extra geometric calculations required by 3D. That's certainly not the 1080p video at 100Hz per eye that we were hearing about at IDF last year, but at least it shows that games that haven't been coded for 3D can be translated, albeit at more demure settings.
In the case of Motorstorm: Pacific Rift, the game already ran at a 720p / 30fps clip, so the solution was to generate it at a lower resolution and to use hardware upscaling and a few optimizations to make 3D work. Lest you think the transition was all bad news on the graphical immersion front, the SCEE devs also mention that quite a few field-of-view and motion-illustrating effects could simply be disabled in 3D, as in that mode "you get [them] for free." Of course, we're still only talking about retrofitting 3D, and Sony's big hope is that developers will code for the new format right from the start, resulting in visually richer and technically more efficient implementations.

[TokyoDrift] built an adapter that allows you to connect a PlayStation 2 controller to a PlayStation Portable. It’s a bit different from similar hacks as this adapter doesn’t require any hardware alteration to the PSP or the controller. To do so, a plug-in is used on the PSP firmware side of things. The adapter then makes use of video out and PS2 controller extension cables, along with an ATmega8 microcontroller to handle the signals between the two devices. We posted a picture of the guts because we like that king of thing but the finished project is nicely housed inside of a project box.

Falcom’s big announcement must be this, a new game in the Legend of the Heroes series.
Zero no Kiseki is a direct sequel to the Sora no Kiseki line of Legend of Heroes games. Tonfa bearing Lloyd Burnings and pistol equipped Elly McDaell are the lead characters. Concept art for both of them are below.
Falcom didn’t go into details, but they say Zero no Kiseki will have a grand story (it’s genre is “story RPG”) and a revised battle system. Zero no Kiseki is on track for release this year in Japan.

The Lavalit Team have released a new build of Openbor for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Gp2x, Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of Beats Of Rage originally created by the wonderful
folks over at http://www.senileteam.com

Those of you who have been following this story [LINK] regarding our Ironstar comrade Dom Guerrera’s PlayStation Network account being hacked; this is a fully detailed version of his situation, along with another PlayStation Network user that has reported a similar story. The previous post involving Dom’s PlayStation Network account being somehow hacked never detailed his situation in full, I made brief reference to it as a warning.
On Saturday April 17th Dom received a chain message from a friend on the PlayStation Network. The message that he received contained a URL to a PSN code generating website, which promised free content from the PlayStation Store. Dom DID NOT, and didn’t have any intentions to visit the PSN code generating website. The next day at about 10 AM EST, while at work Dom received multiple emails that confirmed purchases made through his PlayStation Network account, although he did not purchase anything. There was absolutely no person using Dom’s PlayStation 3, nor does anyone else have his account information. When he finally got home from work he immediately contacted Sony PlayStation customer support and checked the status of his PlayStation Network account, on his account multiple purchases of PSP titles were made, random PSP demos were queued to his transactions as well. Dom does not own a PSP. The purchases made on his PlayStation Network account totaled an outrageous $350, as his credit card was charged every dime. As you would expect; Dom was outraged. He contacted his credit card representative and reported the situation, although he is yet to receive any money back from the purchases made on the PlayStation Network account.
Like Dom, I’ve spoken to another user on the PlayStation Network that has reported almost the exact situation involving PSN chain letters and the hacking of his account. In his situation he was sent chain letter on PSN containing the PSN code generator website’s URL. Again, he also did not visit the website. In brief details the user told me that his credit card was charged multiple times for PSP titles, demos were queued to his account as well (similar to Dom), the purchases made on his account totaled enough to cause his credit card to bounce. He also does not own a PSP.
The two stories posted on CVG and Destructiod are inaccurate. Dom Guerrera did not visit any phishing scam website.
Unfortunately we haven’t received any official word from Sony regarding this matter; as usual we’ll keep you updated. If you have noticed suspicious activity on your PlayStation Network account recently, please let us know in the comments below.
*Update*
We have just received word from Sony's PlayStation Network investigation team; Dom's account was indeed hacked. According to Sony, Dom's PlayStation Network account was accessed from an unknown IP address that purchased loads of unauthorized content from the PlayStation Store. Sony also reimbursed Dom's credit account with half of the money he was charged. The situation is still being investigated. We will give you a final update when the situation is resolved.

April 24th, 2010, 11:53 Posted By: wraggster
At the 3D Gaming Summit in Los Angeles, Sony Platform Research Manager David Coombes talked about the PS3's upcoming firmware update, how it will affect the console's performance, and what's new with the PlayStation Move.
In regards to the PS3's 3D-enabling firmware update, Coombes said it will come in two waves; the first update hitting this Summer will allow the console to display 3D games, while 3D Blu-ray support will come "a short time after." Sony reiterated that the games being offered to UK customers who purchase a 3D-read Sony Bravia display, which includes PAIN, Wipeout HD, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, and others, may not be the same as those offered in the United States.
Coombes also spoke about 3D on the PlayStation 3 from a development perspective. Most notably, he discussed that the 3D experience in PS3 games would always be implemented by developers, not by an automatic conversion process in the PlayStation 3 itself. While TV manufacturers may offer a conversion feature, the PS3 itself will not. In other words, once the console gets its firmware update, that doesn't mean you'll be able to play any game in pseudo-3D. You'll have to wait for the developers to produce an actual 3D version of the game.
He also addressed concerns that 3D images will cut the console's processing power in half, saying developers can actually find non-3D information that can be shared between left and right images. Shadows, for example, are generally flat. The PS3's GPU can share that data between left and right eye images, instead of having to render it twice.
Similarly, games that are already capable of running in split-screen will transition to 3D more easily, since they're already designed to display two simultaneous images. By finding ways to optimize 3D, developers won't necessarily have to sacrifice detail or framerates.
Coombes also announced that 3D PS3 games will be compatible with any and all 3D HDTVs that support the HDMI 1.4 standard. The PS3 will automatically scale 3D images to fit whatever screen you're playing on, while still making it a comfortable viewing experience.
The 3D software development kit has been available to developers since January, the fruits of which we expect to see at this year's E3.
Lastly, Coombes demoed the PlayStation Move, and how it pertains to 3D control. In addition to simply tracking the Move controller itself, however, Coombes also demonstrated the facial recognition and head-tracking capabilities of the PlayStation Eye, as part of the Move system. The demo included an on-screen mechanical puppet that was mapped to his body, as well as his arms via the PlayStation Move.
Head and body-tracking meant the puppet's entire torso was matching the position of his body. The purposed benefit of combining the Move's controller tracking technology with the PlayStation Eye's head and body tracking, Coombes said, was Johnny Chung-style perspective tracking - where moving your head changes your perspective of the world inside your TV, giving the illusion of 3D.
Coombes also applied these concepts to a third-person perspective of the puppet, where his actions were being mapped onto a 3D character within the game. Moving his body and arms caused the character to move and reach into the game-world. This was all just a tech demo, but still an encouraging example of what developers could pull off in the future.

Additional trophy sorting and 3D gaming readiness should have been enough to satisfy and PS3 owner after the latest v3.30 system update (hey, at least it didn't take anything away this time) but there's a couple other surprises in store. If you're the kind of person who loves (or hates) their beeps and bloops, there's a toggle for Bitstream Direct (output audio with the original digital signal prioritized) or Mix (mixed with sound effects such as button sounds and then converted to bitstream format) on Blu-ray movies, while future VAIO PC owners can get a taste of remote play without any PSP intermediary. Other, unconfirmed, reports include updated Flash compatibility, enhanced region free Blu-ray movie playback, the usual complaints of bricked or otherwise busted consoles as well as erroneous claims of an updated EULA that maintains Sony can update your PS3 whenever it wants (newsflash - it's always said that.) Sure, you can always wait for a custom build from Geohot instead, but we've got a Fat Princess to rescue.

Capcom has sent over a response to the revelation of Final Fight: Double Impact's DRM, which requires that a user be signed into PSN to play it, even in single-player. The publisher apologized to fans -- not for the restriction, but for not making the fact that there was a restriction clearer.
"Typically, the notification for a required PlayStation Network connection appears in the full game description when a game is downloaded from the PlayStation Store," the statement reads. "Unfortunately when populating this content this detail was overlooked and wasn't included in the versions of the game that released in North America and Asia."
Capcom has "acted quickly with Sony Computer Entertainment America" and ensures fans that it will be addressed. Before you start pooling your money with your PSN-sharing friends, we have our own warning: given the context of the statement, the promised fix is more likely to be the addition of a warning than the removal of the DRM.

Matlo] worked out a way to use a PS/2 Keyboard and USB mouse with a PlayStation3. The hard work is handled by a Teensy board, which is becoming a popular choice with controller hacks. It interfaces with the keyboard and mouse, translates their input, and sends joystick button commands to the PS3. He is limited to mapping the inputs from a PS3 controller but that is still enough options to work beautifully with first person shooters, especially if you’re used to gaming on a PC instead of a console. If you want to give this one a try, head over to the google code page to download the source code.

Now also the fat and slim PSP owners have to watch their hands thanks to a plugin developed by ad-hoc coder DeviantWhich reproduces (not really accurately, it is to say, but this is only the first release ..) watch this classic from the Go for PSP firmware 5.70. Go for Fatties Clock is installed like any other prx is compatible with most custom firmware currently in circulation, and is easy to use. To activate the time display is required, after copy and activated, simultaneously press L + R + Square while hiding enough pressure on the Circle, with the next version will be fixed some bugs that have already been reported by several users and will probably add another couple of functions.

News/release from cmbeke
Heres my stuck pixel fixer, instead of filling the whole screen with flashing RGB colors this just targets the affected pixel (hence the name). Got the idea from the check my psp thread and made it yesterday (added the menu today) because I had an annoying green pixel. It doesnt have the best graphics, but it works perfectly for what its made for. You can change the background color when looking for your pixel to make it easyer to select. Hope this comes in handy for some one, if you get confused about how to use it just ask.
(i'd do a video but remotejoy doesnt show stuck pixels, and it'd be boring )
UPDATED 1
I've added a black screen for searching for your stuck pixel as requested by nickxab

News/release from mcidclan
Hi everybody,
PSPuht (for psp ultimate head/hand tracker), is based on image processing.
It uses filters.
It identifies pixels values in the ycrcb colorimetric space.
It evaluates the position of a cloud of black pixels in a black & white image.
What's new in V1.1.0
Poc in video :
This version is greater flexible and give better performances with
a tracking more tolerant to noise/parasites.
- A single allocation is necessary to initialize the buffers.
Allocate 0x22240 bytes for a direct rendering (No medium filter applied).
Else allocate 0x34E40 bytes if you want to apply the medium filter.
myUht-> initBuffer (Bwork, false, false) / / the second parameter indicates if seek to do a direct rendering. The last parameter indicates if the buffer RGB_565 shall be used or not.
- Ability to apply a grid of pixelization on the black pixels cloud. (corresponding to the tracked entity.)
This grid allows the elimination of parasites. You need to set the size of a grid cell, and give a tolerance relating to the pixels outside the cloud.
myUht-> setGrid (8, 32) / / grid cell size = 8; 8 * 8 pixels = 64; 64 / 2 = 32.
Tolerance to the pixels outside the cloud is 32.
- Ability to define minimum dimensions of the cloud pixels (corresponding to the tracked entity).
myUht-> setMinDim (20, 20); xMin = 20 yMin = 20 (width, height)
You can download it here : PSPuht V1.1.0
the archive should not be more than 210 ko
Sorry for my english :s

Dundee developer Cohort Studios is busy building one of the first PlayStation Move titles to be released – and the group has already heaped praise on Sony’s motion control device.
“The PlayStation Move is a great piece of hardware,” says studio CEO Lol Scragg. “It has a fantastic feel to it and it’s incredibly accurate. We’ve had no issues with it, and the hardware and the libraries have come on well.”
In an interview with Develop, the Cohort CEO said that both Sony and Microsoft’s new wave of motion control peripherals will allure many of the core market who have – in some respects – become vocally opposed to motion control gaming.
“Having used both controllers a lot, I’d say it was clear that the Move controller is so much more accurate [than the Wii]," said Scragg. "And it’s not just across the X and Y-axis either, the Z axis is really accurate as well."
He added: “I understand that, if you read any of the forums, you’ll [see] people state they don’t need motion control, but that’s because they’ve likened motion control to the Wii.
“Once Sony and Microsoft start releasing their own games for their motion controllers, I think the core will come round to it.”
Cohort is currently building an upcoming on-rails shooter, given the working title ‘the Shoot’.
Elsewhere in the interview, Scragg went on to warn that developers shouldn’t insist on developing motion control games for sake of it.
“I don’t think every game can work with motion controls,” he said.
“Some things just don’t fit, and I’m hoping – with these new motion controllers – developers don’t say ‘oh we’ll just force in motion controls’ because it would add something new.“

Sony has released a new version of the PlayStation 3 hardware. The new iteration features an improved version of the RSX graphics chip that uses 15 per cent less power and is less prone to the 'yellow light of death'.
The console is more power efficient and cooler to run than previous versions. Significantly for Sony it is also cheaper to produce. However, it is still unclear if the console is being sold at a profit - although the original version of the PlayStation Slim was believed to be close to break even.
As first discovered by website PlayStation University the hardware update features a 45nm version of the RSX chip, rather than the less efficient 65nm version originally released. The Cell chip has been 45nm in both iterations.
The console also now uses two 128MB XDR RAM chips instead of four 64MB chips and features a new cooling assembly and a lighter power supply.
Specified as the CECH-2100A, like most minor hardware iterations the new version of the console has not been publically announced or promoted by Sony.

Iron Man is scheduled to land in Europe's PlayStation Home on Thursday ahead of the release of Iron Man 2 this Friday.
A movie mini-game sees players pilot Tony Stark through the streets of the city collecting arc reactors and dodging mines.
The game will be hosted in Home's Audi space where you can answer a series of Iron Man related questions at various terminals to win yourself an in-game t-shirt.
The top ten players in the Iron Man mini-game, however, will receive their very own virtual power suit, which is much more badass.

Most people buy a PS3 second-hand according to a new study by a website that, er, offers deals on PS3s.
UK website PS3PriceCompare surveyed over 1000 owners of the console and found that 33 per cent had bought a used machine.
Bizarrely, the second most popular method of PS3 purchase was via signing up for a mobile phone contract and receiving the console as an incentive. A considerable 26 per cent said they'd gotten their PS3 this way.
Only 24 per cent admitted to paying full price for Sony's flagship console.
The rest were either given a PS3 as a gift (14 per cent) or won the console in a competition (3 per cent).
78 per cent of the 1017 people that took part said they had bought a second-hand game for PS3.

Sony has lifted the lid on another new feature coming to PS3 hit SingStar as part of its June update – SingStar Remote.
The new functionality will allow those with both a PS3 and PSP to connect both machines and use the portable device to create a playlist of up to 20 songs during a session. This can be tinkered with while the game is being played, allowing users to queue up plenty of tracks that will quickly appear in the designated order on the PS3.
In another additional, the Professional gameplay mode will now rank players on their vibrato performance. SingStar Clubs are expanding too and can now house up to 1000 members, and players are now able to join up to five clubs.
SingStore videos will also be viewable directly from their associated songs in the game.
All of this will be arriving in the game’s next update in June, which will also offer online play for the first time in the series.

Sony's most recent fun-postponing mandatory system update for PS3 also paved the way for VAIO PCs to take remote control of your console.
That's according to the official release notes (thanks Kotaku), which state: "You can now select [PC] as an option under [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device].
"When you select this option, you will be able to use the remote play feature to operate your PS3 system from future models of the VAIO PC.
"Details of this feature will be announced on the official VAIO website at vaio.eu/playstation in May 2010."
It not being May yet, all that you can find on the VAIO website is some lifestyle photography and a few notices of intent.
PS3's 3.30 firmware also introduced new ways of sorting Trophies and updated the console to prepare it for the launch of 3D stereoscopic games this summer.

BioWare is working with Sony to discover why Dragon Age: Origins struggles to run on PS3.
The problems started after Sony released firmware update 3.30 for the console last week. BioWare's community forums are clogged with reports of game crashes.
Though aware of the issue, BioWare cannot recreate the problems on dev kits and so quickly analyse and isolate the error. Because of this, the community is being called on to submit feedback. "We have to do this a little old school, and keep narrowing the cases down," said BioWare poster Fernando Melo.
His comments suggest the issue relates to games saved before the firmware release conflicting with games saved afterwards. Some users have 'repaired' their game by deleting saved games, but Melo is loathe to recommend this method.
If you're experiencing problems, head over to the BioWare forums to contribute.
"Thanks again for your patience," said Melo. "It is pretty clear that despite this affecting other titles, that it has impacted on DA substantially. We're hopeful there is something we can do from our end to work around whatever was introduced in 3.3.
"In the meantime, please continue to send us information that will help us narrow this down," he added.
Dragon Age: Origins expansion Awakening was released in March, raising the level cap and giving voice to the darkspawn. Awakening was awarded 9/10 on Eurogamer.

Superhero film Kick-Ass has been turned into a beat-'em-up videogame for PS3, which will be released this Thursday on PSN for $14.99 in the US.
The game was made by Frozen Codebase - a studio that boasts former Naughty Dog, Raven and Treyarch staff. Work only began on an adaptation in September 2009, which meant Frozen Codebase bypassing visual flourishes for "gameplay, gameplay and more gameplay", according to president Ben Geisler.
That gameplay is beat-'em-up sprinkled with co-op and RPG elements. The story follows what happens in the film and the comic, but also goes into more detail about the drug trade.
There's an Arena mode for wave-based enemy slaying, and multiplayer is on the way as post-release DLC.
There's a video of the Kick-Ass game on the US PlayStation blog.
Sony offered "no comment" on a European release.
The Kick-Ass film opened in UK cinemas in late March.

Flamboyantly attired in a flowing fuchsia scarf, the Mini Game King is probably guilty of countless copyright violations, but we don't care. The real question is whether this latest KIRF PSP can actually play games, and we're happy to say it does. Summoning the full might of its infringing power, the King can emulate eleven classic consoles and handhelds when it's not playing AV files from 4GB of internal memory, and its Chinese manufacturer triumphantly claims that the device "will make you happy unlimited" if you hook up an wireless six-axis controller as well. "This controller does not come with the console, you have to pay for it," reads the box, but we're dying to try "3Dthergame" and "Othergame" as soon as we can dig one up.

Absolute genius but deeply flawed – that’s the verdict of Revolution Software’s acclaimed development star Charles Cecil when asked by MCV what he though of Sony’s recent chart-topper Heavy Rain.
“Half way through I thought it was a work of absolute genius,” Cecil told MCV. “When I finished it, I still thought it was a work of genius but deeply flawed. There’s a lot of questions it asks, and I think some of those are answered really well, and others are flawed.
“But I really admire David Cage, his team and the work they have done. I think it’s good for the adventure game, I think it’s good for the industry overall.” And doing his best not to venture into spoiler territory, Cecil went on to highlight the moment that upset him the most.
“What I’m personally very interested in is the relationship the audience has with the character they control,” he continued.
“Without spoiling anything, you discover something at the end that’s incredibly important about one of the characters you’ve been playing, which creates an incredible disconnect between the audience and the character – and I think that is deeply, deeply flawed.
“It would have worked in a film, it’s a great film technique but it should never have been brought over to games, and David and his team should have probably seen that. But I do think it’s a brilliant game.”

The latest iteration of Sony’s PS3 Slim, the CECH-2100A, houses a rebuilt RSX chip that cuts both the power consumption and the likelihood of failure for the console.
As has been previously reported, the CECH-2100A is 200g lighter than the generation one PS3 Slim. PlayStation University adds that the new unit’s GPU, also known as the RSX chip or ‘Reality Synthesizer’, has been reduced from the 65nm design seen in earlier models to a new streamlined 40nm.
The result is that the console uses less power than older models and generates less heat, meaning that it is far less liable to suffer problems associated with overheating. Sony has already reduced the size of the Cell processor to 45nm in an earlier redesign.
As a further consequence, the new design also boasts a simplified heatsink, smaller cooling unit and a smaller lighter power supply that is just half the weight (412g) of the PSU found in the launch PS3. A number of chips found in older units have also been removed.
The CECH-2100A uses just 80W of power when playing games. Compare this to the 160W that first generation ‘phat’ PS3s consume when just watching movies.

This is for people who just need to have that "official" stamp on everything related to their console.
Sony Japan has started up a PS3 hard drive upgrade program. Owners of pretty much any current PS3 model -- even 20 gigabyte launch units -- can send in their system to have their internal hard drive replaced with a 250 gigabyte disk.
No, this isn't a free process. Not even close. For the parts and labor, Sony is asking 18,000 yen. That's close to the price of a new PSP-3000.
It looks like Sony takes care of everything for you, though, from swapping out the drives to moving all your data over from the old drive to the new one. They'll even back your old hard drive.
Still, it should be noted that you can easily swap out hard drives on your own or opt for an external USB solution, both at far less cost. This is something that Sony's upgrade info page fails to mention, unfortunately.
This program is only available in Japan at present.
I ask you, would you really pay old Sony to upgrade your PS3's hard drive? I sure as hell wouldn't. Leave feedback via comments.

The PlayStation Minis version of Championship Manager 2010 will be released tomorrow.
You'll pay either £4.99 or €5.99, depending on where you live.
Championship Manager's Tim Hodges has posted screenshots and a video on the European PlayStation blog to coincide with the news.
This Minis adaptation has been designed to sit alongside the full-size Championship Manager 2010 game. It won't compete on depth, but the developer didn't set out to do so.
PlayStation Minis are playable on both PSP and PS3.

Someone has finally filed a class-action lawsuit against Sony for the removal of Other OS. I hope that this forces Sony to restore the functionality or pay those affected enough to restore the functionality (which would essentially mean giving each Other OS user a refund that would allow them to purchase another PS3 so that they can continue to use Other OS on the one that they have). I truly believe that Sony was in the wrong here, and hope that justice will prevail. Unfortunately, I know that Class Action lawsuits rarely get full and just compensation for those affected...
From Slashdot:
A Californian Playstation 3 user has filed the first class action lawsuit against Sony over removal of the 'Install Other OS' function from the Playstation 3. The action seeks to redress Sony's 'intentional disablement of the valuable functionalities originally advertised as available with the Sony Playstation 3 video game console.' The suit claims that the disablement breaches the sales contract between Sony and its customers and constitutes 'an unfair and deceptive business practice perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting customers.'

Newly released today:
Due to the immense popularity of the first PSP game in the series, the developers are putting more effort, more girls and more costumes into this second installment.
Choose a pair of your favourite characters and take them on this 2D Belt scrolling action, let the girls cooperate with each other to launch combos, or switch them in and out to let the player character rest.
22 girls will join the battle with a complete new plot. Warriors who were out of the game are back with new skin tight dresses. Watch the fully voiced cut-ins when you launch sure kill attacks and see what damage you do to your opponents and their clothings. Beware, though, your opponents can do the same to you.

Arguably the biggest aspect to Bungie's deal with Activision today isn't that the Halo-creator has signed with the publisher embroiled in an ugly legal spat over treatment of its studios.
No, it's the fact that the once Xbox-exclusive studio has changed focus to a new IP that will be released on multiple formats.
For the past 10 years Bungie has worked solely on Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360 platforms - so the switch to multiplatform could present some issues.
We put the question to the studio's community manager Brian Jarrard - will it not be a challenge moving to platforms like PS3?
"Oh, sure - we've been Xbox exclusive for a long time," he said. However he confidently added: "But it's something where we have some of the best engineering folks in the industry on board who are already thinking heard about how our new game universe might manifest itself over various devices." And if Bungie's world-class team of coders can't quite make it, Jarrard said the new publishing deal with Activision gives the studio access to many who know multiplatform development well.
Said Jarrard: "That was another big draw to Activision - they have a lot of experience with multiple platforms and technical expertise. I think we'll be able to work with them to leverage their experience and make that a little bit easier for us going forward."

via Eurogamer
God of War III game director Stig Asmussen has revealed that former directors David Jaffe and Cory Barlog had different ideas about how to end the series.
"What David Jaffe talked about doing was - and I'm not sure how it would happen - basically, you destroy Greek mythology and then Norse mythology is right around the corner," Asmussen told GamePro.
"That's the next thing that Kratos would go after. It becomes clear at the end that he's going to become this harbinger of death across different mythologies in the world and maybe carry the series on from there." Apparently Barlog's idea was "about Kratos becoming Death".
David Jaffe subsequently popped up on Twitter to clarify, as spotted by Kotaku. "I assure you my story was not as simple as Kratos going after the Norse gods. There is an element of truth but it goes far beyond," he tweeted.
He also said: "I love Cory, he rocks. But that was my idea. Blades of Chaos becomes the Scythe of the Reaper. BUT still, lots more. Up2Sony2reveal." Asmussen was fond of both alternatives. "They're both incredibly good ideas, but you need a director to be passionate about the story and understand it intimately. If I had used Dave or Cory's idea, I wouldn't have been as passionate about it."
He also talked a little about working under a game director, having worked as lead environment artist and art director under Jaffe and Barlog respectively for the first two God of War games.
"Jaffe was a 'big idea' kind of guy who thought outside of the box," Asmussen explained. "He worked more along the lines of commanding his ideas, while Cory was a little more political and savvy when working with people and pitching his ideas. They're two very different people, but they're both incredibly talented."

A teen who bought down a worldwide gaming network has been sentenced to a year's probation and to perform 250 hours of community service.
The kid will also have to write a cheque to Sony for $5,000 in damages.
The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons , faced four counts for planting a computer virus that caused Sony's gaming Web site to repeatedly crash between November 16-26, 2008.
A report into the kid said he otherwise led a normal life, was a good student and participated in school activities.
1000s of IT Jobs at CWJobs
Search current IT jobs at CWJobs.

www.cwjobs.co.ukHowever the whole thing was based on an obsession that the kid had with winning.
Rather than do it in the traditional US way of winning on the sports field or fighting in countries that do not have the same weapons ability, the teen burned the midnight oil playing computer games.
Coppers claimed that the teen crippled Sony's online PlayStation site in retaliation for being kicked off the site for cheating while playing a war game called SOCOM US Navy Seals.
He used hacker tools to contact a botnet and these were directed clog three games on the PlayStation site, causing it to crash and go off-line.
Sony wanted $33,200 in restitution, but the judge ruled that amount would be too excessive for the teen.

More than two months since the last release, updates the Game Boy Advance emulator gpSP-J, as amended and improved by an unknown Japanese coder, developed by Takka gpSP dell'Unofficial. The lack of an official changelog however, prevents us from knowing any new features introduced with this update. You just need to personally test the program and assess any progress.

Hi guys, this is a port of a windows game called Dink Smallwood to the PSP. It's an isometric RPG originally made in 1997 about a farmer defeating the forces of evil.
This port works better on the PSP-2000 models due to larger RAM, but still works on a phat.
I didn't make this, but the developer doesn't mind me listing this.
You can download it from freedink.org under the downloads for PSP section.
The source code is available as well under the GPL.
The original windows version is available for free from RTSoft.

For addressing CFW bug.
AutoBootFixer v1.0
If the DRM file is invalid you can simply renew it by downloading a new one here... click here from Insoft.
Insoft S.O.L.O (Software Original Location Only) our DRM for Software
DRM is only used to prevent the spread of this software to other sites, in the event someone uploads this software to another site without Insoft approval the software application sig will be changed on future builds, rendering previous builds usless on download from any unapproved sites.
This Choice is designed for to be used as a simple menu to select from your personal backup collection of homebrew and your collection of other games.
This software uses it's own icons for homebrew "48 x 48 pixels"
Instructions : Making an Icon
For an eboot.pbp application simply create an 48x48 pixel icon named eboot.png at the same location of your eboot.pbp file.
For an iso based homebrew simply do the same but for the naming of the file you simple use the same as your iso file with the extension iso replaced with png, eg. if you had an homebrew.iso you would also have another file named homebrew.png
You can rate every entry by pressing left or right on the d-pad.
Launch a homebrew by pressing cross
On exit of any homebrew you will be returned.
Home will return to the XMB
I mainly making this for my little nephews so they have a nice simple menu to select what game they like to play and have released it here in case anyone is interested in looking for a simple menu for thier kids or nephews or what ever.
this is a pre alpha release so a lot more has to be done and estimate by next week it should be well into beta and the week after final.
Choice for BOOT is similer for Choice for Slim. Choice for BOOT is designed to make use of that cfw feture that will launch an eboot.pbp from a directory named BOOT on startup.

The recent class action against Sony and the removal of the Install Other OS feature from the PlayStation 3 highlights a "relatively untested" area of UK and European law, Jas Purewal, a lawyer at Olswang LLP and writer of GamerLaw, has told GamesIndustry.biz.
Purewal's comments were made following the revelation yesterday that Sony faces a class action lawsuit over the removal of the "Other OS" features commonly used to install the Linux operating system on the console.
Sony removed the feature in a firmware update after hackers exploited the option to gain read/write access to the PlayStation 3.
"This case raises questions about whether console manufacturers or retailers should be liable over the removal of features which were marketed to consumers at the point of sale but are removed subsequently," said Purewal.
Amazon UK has reportedly already issued a partial refund after a customer complaint, with the law in Europe placing the onus of liability on retailers.
"This issue is relatively untested in the UK and Europe. Consumer protection is an important part of UK/EU law, which imposes certain minimum legal obligations on retailers regarding the sale of goods to consumers: for example, goods must be of satisfactory quality and must be fit for purpose," said Purewal.
"Consumers could argue that changes to console functionality are a breach of those obligations," he added. "On the other hand, there is an argument that manufacturers should have leeway if the console needs to be modified for genuine reasons, such as security or anti-piracy."
The class action was filed in a North District of California court and so the role of the retailer in the issue is not likely to be a key focus.
"Clearly this matter raises quite complex issues and, if it was litigated in Europe, it would be interesting to see where the courts' sympathy would lie," said Purewal.

Once again, DRM only hurts legit content purchasers: 'An unusual glitch has angered some Avatar Blu-ray owners. For these unlucky people, since the disc won't play on their Blu-ray players, their new Avatar DVD serves no real purpose other than to sit idly on the coffee table. ... It appears the main culprit concerning playback issues with Avatar is, ironically, the disc's DRM (digital rights management). ... Even with updated firmware, a lot of Blu-ray players weren't prepared for these security measures. Despite the security problems, bootleggers are having a field day. Pirated copies of Avatar, according to Los Angeles Times, were available as early as January.'"
Reader Murpster adds that this problem isn't specific to the Blu-ray version: "Got a regular Avatar DVD and it won't play on either of my DVD players. It will play on one computer DVD drive, if I want to watch it on a 12-inch screen."

Well, they're helpful if you speak Japanese, that is. The latest round of ads for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker out of Japan centers on the escapades of Tom and Dick, two cartoon dudes who really, really like living everyday life as if they were Solid Snake. The duo demonstrate everything from the "heart massage" technique (reviving a downed teammate) to the game's four player co-op functionality, with plenty of goofy animation to boot.
Andriasang noticed the ads over at the "Hamaru Gear Solid" website -- "Hamaru Gear Solid" is the marketing campaign for Peace Walker, based on Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Enterbrain (the company that owns and publishes Japanese gaming mag Famitsu), and a pun relating his name to the word "Hamaru" (meaning "to get in"). We've embedded all five for you after the break, should you choose to entertain their sheer madness.

As with most major children's films, Toy Story 3 will have a licensed video game counterpart, releasing on nearly every platform imaginable -- including platforms from the future. Disney Interactive Studios has confirmed PlayStation Move motion controller support for Toy Story 3.
Like Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, the game won't offer motion controller support out of the box. The reason? Toy Story 3's release date -- June 15 -- is months before the Move controller is even available. A press release clarifies that "players will be able to download mini-games that will be playable with the PlayStation Move when the new motion controller is available." Excellent, motion controller mini-games! We can't wait!
Until then, PS3 owners will be able to enjoy additional content exclusive to the platform. As with Batman: Arkham Asylum, Sony has secured exclusive rights to yet another playable villain. The slightly less disturbed Emperor Zurg will be playable in the game's "Toy Box" mode, a sandbox mode that allows players to create and play free-form challenges.

PSPgo lets users control PSP games with a PlayStation 3 controller. Nifty, but what if you have a regular PSP? Well, there’s this idea.
Sony Computer Entertainment America kicked around the idea of connecting a PSP directly to a standard PlayStation controller. A patent outlines two ideas. One uses a hinged PSP case locked on a regular controller. Another solution has users plug their PSP into a special controller. Ah, that brings back memories of good old video game cartridges. Both connected controllers give the PSP a second analog stick, a feature developers could utilize if this accessory ever gets released and sells like hotcakes.
Would you buy it?

Namco Bandai has yet another Mobile Suit Gundam arcade game in development, but Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus uses different hardware.
Past Gundam Vs. arcade games were configured for Namco System 256. Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus is made for Namco System 357, the same hardware Namco Bandai used for Tekken 6. Namco System 357 has a Cell processor and the PS3’s RSX graphics processor.
The new hardware should make Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus the sharpest installment of the Gundam Vs. series. Also, since Gundam: Extreme Versus uses the same hardware, Namco Bandai could port this game to PlayStation 3. So far, all of the other arcade Gundam games were released for PSP.
