It's safe to say people are excited about Shenmue 3: Just 48 hours after legendary developer Yu Suzuki launched a crowdfunding campaign, the gamesmashed its $2 million fundraising goal, pulling in more than $4 million, and setting a couple Kickstarter records in the process. So it's clear fans of the series are already happy. But just in case you needed another reason to commit, Suzuki's studio YS Net just posted an update on Kickstarter saying that backers will now have the option of choosing a physical PS4 copy of the game. Previously, the options were: digital copies for PS4 or Windows for $29, or a physical Windows copy for $60. So, PlayStation fans will now also have the option of playing off a disc; there, too, the price will be sixty bucks. If that's the only reason you were previously holding off on backing, you can still do so: The campaign is open through the evening of July 17th, with the game set to arrive in December 2017.

SCEE president Jim Ryan has claimed that PS4 is commanding the European next-gen console market, with market share in some regions reaching 90 per cent.
“We have a very significant market leadership,” Ryan toldVG247. “We have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe. Extremely significant. I don’t think market-share’s any less than 70 per cent, and frequently greater than 90 per cent in continental Europe.”
The comments came in the same interview where Ryanappeared to rule out any potential price cut for the PS4, despite retail listing for the new 1TB model suggesting it will cost the same as the existing 500GB price and leading to speculation of a price cut.
“Particularly in Europe… our momentum is still very considerable,” Ryan added. “We’re happy with the price and we’re happy with the value proposition. Consumers, equally and more importantly, appear to he happy with the price and the value proposition.
“We’ll leave it where it is for now.”

Sony has announced its PlayStation Plus program's free games will now become available on the same day in both North America and Europe.
Starting this month, all PlayStation Plus users in North America and Europe will be able to pick up their monthly gift on the first Tuesday of the month.
“As of this month, Plus games go live in both EU and US on the first Tuesday of the month (no longer Wednesday in EU),” Sony's Fred Dutton commented on the PlayStation Europe blog. “The first Tuesday in July is 7th July, hence why the games aren’t launching this week.”
The change doesn't affect North American subscribers, but those in Europe no longer have to wait an extra day for the free game offers.

PS4's success in Europe is a sign that the hardware doesn't need a drop in price, according to Sony's chief for the region.
SCEE president Jim Ryan told VG247 that PlayStation 4 accounts for at least seven out of every 10 games consoles sold in any European country, with market share 'frequently' extending up to a significant 90 per cent.
“We have a very significant market leadership,” stated Ryan.
“We have market leadership in every country in Europe, and have very significant market leadership in continental Europe. Extremely significant.
"I don’t think market share’s any less than 70 per cent, and [it's] frequently greater than 90 per cent in continental Europe.”
He went on to respond to questions over a potential price cut for the hardware, following Microsoft's decision to knock down the Xbox One's RRP ahead of E3.
“Particularly in Europe, our momentum is still very considerable,” he retorted.
“We’re happy with the price and we’re happy with the value proposition.
“Consumers, equally and more importantly, appear to he happy with the price and the value proposition. We’ll leave it where it is for now.”
Sony recently announced a 1TB model of the console, leading many to anticipate a fall in price for the original 500GB model.
With this seemingly dismissed, it could be that the platform holder is moving to replace the 500GB SKU with its bigger sibling.

Long before Sony and Nintendo were rivals, the two companies were partners for a brief time. In 1988 the duo started work on SNES-CD, a video game media format that was supposed to augment the cartridge-based SNES by adding support for higher-capacity CDs. In 1991 at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Sony introduced the "Play Station" (yes, with a space) but it never saw the light of day. Now, more than two decades later, Imgur user DanDiebold has uploaded images of the unreleased console. This particular model (about 200 Play Station prototypes were created) confirms that the system was supposed to be compatible with existing SNES titles as well as titles to be released in the SNES-CD format. In other words, it would have been the world's first hybrid console: game developers and gamers alike would be able to use both SNES cartridges and CDs. If you want to learn more about this particular prototype, check out the following thread onAssembler Games.

Sony’s updated PS4 design is quitter than the existing model and generates less heat.
That’s according to Eurogamer, which has examined the findings of a Pocket News report.
The PS4 redesign was quietly revealed by at FCC filing last month. Although on the surface it looks much the same as the current PS4 (bar some rearranging of the rear ports and some subtle tweaks to the case’s plastic finish), the CUH-1200 makes several internal tweaks that serve to make the device far more efficient.
Out are the 16 separate 512MB memory modules and in are eight 1GB modules. So while it’s still 8GB overall, the halving of the number of units offers an energy saving. The CPU appears to still be a 28nm build, although a new designation points to further designs changes.
Also altered is the arrangement of the components, and the Blu-ray drive has been replaced with what the site describes as a “simpler” design. The power supply is completely changed, however, with the new unit being 80g lighter and drawing less power.
All of which leads to a reduction in standby power consumption of between 30-50 per cent. Power consumption while idling in the menu is down by 11 per cent, while in-game power draw is down by around 18 per cent.
Aside from the cost savings, this also means the new console is a lot quitter than the current model, with noise output reduced by about 5dB.
The CUH-1200 is currently only available in Japan and there’s not yet any word on when it will start arriving in the UK.

Not long after our last intimate chat with Shuhei Yoshida, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios at E3, a Redditor managed to dig up a prototype of the never-released "Nintendo PlayStation" that eventually led to the birth of Sony's very own gaming console. Naturally, when we caught up with Shuhei-san again at a Project Morpheus event in Hong Kong, we showed him our article on the priceless gem and asked for his thoughts. After some reminiscent giggles, the exec gave a brief account on the time he spent with a device with matching description, as you can see in our interview video after the break.

If you're a hardcore Destiny fan, it's been a rough couple weeks. First, Bungie announced the game's next big expansion, then it revealed some of its content would be exclusive to a pricey $80 collector's edition -- even if you already owned the base game. There was anger, rebellion, Red Bull product tie-ins (no,really) and, eventually, a mea culpa that made the exclusive content available to everyone as separate DLC. Huzzah! Now Destiny players can get everything without buying content twice. Well, unless they want the limited editionDestiny PlayStation 4 -- then they're screwed again.

If you were hoping that all of the Lizard Squad attackers who took down the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live last holiday would get their comeuppance... well, you'll be disappointed. A Finnish court has convicted Julius Kivimäki (aka "Ryan" and "Zeekill") of a whopping 50,700 charges related to various computer crimes, including data breaches, telecommunication-based harassment and swiping credit card data. It sounds good, but his penalty is limited to a suspended 2-year prison sentence and an order to help fight cybercrime -- a trivial penalty in light of his overall damage. Even if you limit Kivimäki's culpability to the gaming network outage, he was still partly responsible for days of downtime at Microsoft and Sony that frustrated millions of players. While he'll theoretically stay on the straight and narrow for at least a while, the verdict isn't exactly going to scare Lizard Squad's other members into becoming model citizens.

Sony is hoping that its ever-developing game streaming service PlayStation Now will slow down the rapid turnover of titles in the industry.
The service was recently updated with a new look, designed to make the catalogue’s 125-plus titles easier to discover for users, plus new categories and themed sections.
Speaking to [a]listdaily, senior director for the service Jack Buser expressed hope that players being able to stream games of days gone by would help titles extend their value for publishers.
"[PlayStation Now] speaks to the lifecycle of the game in our industry,” he said.
“In the games industry, we've been very focused on the first few months after a game is released. Unlike our friends in the movie and music industries, there wasn't as much of a long tail for the game industry. I think PlayStation Now has an extremely interesting role to play as the lifecycle of the game industry matures.
"[It] gives publishers the chance to rejuvenate the ability of a title to generate revenue. When we release a title into the subscription, we create quite a bit of buzz around a title that may not have been advertised for a year or two, even three years in some cases. Now because it's coming into the subscription, gamers are talking about the title, they're curious about the title, and it's like this breath of fresh air into a franchise or even an individual title that previously was very difficult to do in this industry."
While uptake of the platform was initially slow, passing through various beta and invitation-only phases, it seems that streaming titles is quickly becoming a hot desire for gamers.
"If you look at some of the engagement metrics recently on the service, you can see that users are highly engaged,” explained Buser.
“Year over year, we've seen a 300 per cent increase in PS Now users – this is largely due to the subscription being so compelling. If you look at usage per week, average usage is going to be about four hours, which is a very high engagement metric. If you look at it per session, we're looking at about 45 minutes a session, and for popular games over an hour. You can see that people are coming in, playing for very long sessions, and then they're playing multiple sessions per week to get to that very high average per week of four hours.
“That's where that new user experience becomes so important, because when you have such a large growth in your user base and they are so engaged in not just one but several games, it's important to give them a rich user interface to help them more easily transition to other games they might not have otherwise checked out.”

The console version of Bethesda’s The Elder Scrolls Online was the best-selling PS4 title on PSN this June.
That's according to the EU PlayStation Blog, breaking down the best-selling games on Sony platforms.
The PC version of the firm's MMO title launched last year, with console gamers having to wait until June for it to launch. In addition to shooting to the top of the PS4 charts, the game was No.1 when it launched and was the second biggest launch of the year at the time.
Meanwhile in second place is Batman: Arkham Knight - though that title was only available for one week of June. The latest Arkham title was also hugely popular in the physical charts, perched on top of the GfK Chart-Track Top 40 for two weeks running.
Last months’ No.1, The Witcher 3, drops to fourth place, while The Last of Us Remastered returns thanks to a discount.
Below is the PS4 Top Ten for June:
1. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Bethesda)
2. Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros)
3. The Last of Us Remastered (Sony)
4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (CD Projekt RED)
5. FIFA 15 (EA)
6. Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (Square Enix)
7. Minecraft: PlayStation Edition (Sony)
8. Payday 2: Crimewave Edition (505 Games)
9. Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition (Square Enix)
10. Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition (Capcom)

Sony may have 'won' this year's E3 with its triple whammy to the nostalgia glands, but Microsoft still made some big waves with its announcement that Xbox One will now offer backwards comptatibility on certain Xbox 360 games. In the latest issue of Edge, the team caught up with the president of Sony's worldwide studios to discuss what Sony makes of its rivals latest reveal.
"I was very surprised. It must have taken lots of effort for them to realise the backwards compatibility, because the Xbox 360 and Xbox One use very different kinds of architecture," muses Shu. "And I’m very curious. They showed a very short list of titles that work, and doing software emulation means you have to work title by title. So I’m curious to see what kind of games will be included in those 100 games that they say will be compatible by the end of the year."
Despite doing something of a u-turn following Microsoft's original stance on the matter of Xbox 360 games working with Xbox One, the new supportfor backwards compatibility has gone down a treat with fans. Could we see a similar setup with PS4 and PS3's substantial back catalogue? "We don’t have backwards compatibility with PS4. With PS Now you can play PS3 games on PS4, but the main purpose of PS Now is a network service," he comments. "By removing the requirement of games running on the console itself we can bring PlayStation games to multiple devices, including non-PlayStation devices. We just announced an alliance with Samsung in the US so people who purchase Samsung TVs can play PlayStation games on their TV. So that’s the main purpose, not to provide backwards compatibility."
"I totally understand people asking for it, and if it was easy, we’d have done that," he adds, addressing fans asking for a similar function for PS4. "But our focus is creating PS4 games and adding new services. Remaking games on PS4 makes the games even better – with The Last Of Us, you can play at 60 frames per second, and the same goes for Dark Souls 2. Actually, I just finished Dark Souls 2 again on PS4."

On June 17th, 2015, we released the last PlayStation Mobile game. It’s called Oh, Deer! Alpha and it’s an aggressively odd driving game about hitting as many or as few deer with your station wagon as possible on your way to grandma’s house.
On Wednesday, PlayStation Mobile is going away forever. You read that correctly. We released a game which would only be purchasable for one month, after which it will be completely gone. Call us crazy (it’s fine, it only makes us stronger!), but we wanted to give PSM one last hoorah.
But why should you care? Maybe you never played a PSM game! Maybe you’ve never even heard of PSM before this very moment. But to us at Necrosoft Games, it matters. It’s the end of an era of open indie publishing on console, with nothing to take its place.
The end of an era
PSM was a great idea. It was an accessible marketplace where anyone could release a game on PlayStation hardware (namely the Vita, and earlier in PSM’s life, Xperia smartphones). And at the very beginning of the fledgling platform, Sony took a chance on a few indie developers, giving them a small amount of funding to make small games. We were one of those companies.
While we only got a very limited budget – we had less than one programmer’s salary to make an entire game with – it kept us afloat for our first year in business. It’s possible that without that early investment we would not be here. Our first game,Gunhouse (which is still available), didn’t make us any money past that initial funding, but it proved to the world that we exist. It set us on the path to get a deal with Iron Galaxy to make Gunsport.
And it’s because Sony took a chance on us, and other developers like us, that we wanted the platform to go out with a bang rather than a whimper. We’ll go down with the ship, and people will know that ship is going down, because it was a good ship. Maybe it had a few leaks, but we loved it.
There was so much weird potential with PSM. For our last game on the service, we essentially used it as PlayStation Early Access. People can buy Oh, Deer! Alpha for $0.49/£0.32 (the cheapest possible price), and then talk with us about the future of its development, and where it might go. Open platforms allow for experimentation in the console space, and I am sad to see that go away.

Sony wants you to want PS Now, its Netflix-like game-streaming service. The problem is, the company doesn't seem to know how to build that desire. Though the recent app relaunch has seen the service's user interface improve considerably, the same can't be said for the user experience. I used PS Now on the PlayStation 4 almost exclusively for a week and by the time my seven-day trial was set to expire, I still couldn't find a compelling reason to pay for the service -- let alone recommend it to a friend. With Netflix, the value is apparent: $8 per month for on-demand access to thousands of movies and TV shows. Sure the visual and audio quality of that streaming library might not be on par with its Blu-ray counterparts, but the convenience outweighs any cons. For PS Now, that same trade-off isn't quite worth it.

There are a lot of things that ran on the first PlayStation – Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot. But what about an interplanetary space probe?
Well, thanks to NASA, Sony’s inaugural games hardware has taken one bold three-billion mile step for man.
That’s because the space agency repurposed the console’s MIPS R3000 CPU for use in its New Horizons probe.
That’s right, the very same probe that snapped those pretty pictures of Pluto circulating the internet earlier this week.
Launched in 2006, the New Horizons probe utilised the R3000 to control thrusters, track sensors and beam data back home to Earth. (Thanks to The Verge for the details.)
Although the PlayStation’s two successors, the PS2 and PS3, had themselves been launched by New Horizons’ blast-off, the older components were favoured for their reliability. After all, they had to be able to survive a nine-year trip through space at speeds of more than 36,000 miles per hour.
So if your original PlayStation is still running, there’s probably a good reason why.

Sony’s virtual reality tech is going to be at this year’s GameStop Expo.
On Wednesday September 2nd, fans will be able to get hands on with the PlayStation VR kit at the retail giant's event.
The GameStop Expo takes place at Sans Expo and Convention Centre in Las Vegas.
Sony’s Morpheus tech was announced at GDC last year. In September of last year the tech was described by Sony as 85 per cent complete, and this March, Morpheus was given a tentative release window for the first half of 2016.
“Having experienced virtual reality with Project Morpheus at E3 this year, I can confidently say that this is something that truly must be seen to be believed,” said Eric Bright, director of merchandising at GameStop.
“We are excited to bring this innovative product to our Expo, so that our fans can be one of the first to experience virtual reality.”

Ys Net RPG Shenmue 3 has claimed its third Kickstarter record.
Funding for the title has now surpassed the $5,545,991 raised by Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, making it the most highly funded video game ever on the crowdfunding platform.
In total Shenmue 3 has now raised $5,551,171 with 13 hours still to go.
Shenmue is already the fastest game to hit $1m, taking only one hour and 42 minutes, and the fastest to hit $2m, which it achieved in just over nine hours.
If it hits in excess of $8,782,571 it will be Kickstarter’s all-time games record, currently held by card game Exploding Kittens.

GAME is hoping that that the special edition Metal Gear Solid 5 PS4 won’t cost you a (bionic) arm and a leg to pick up this September.
Inspired by the next instalment in Hideo Kojima’s iconic stealth franchise, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, the console is outfitted with a swish black and red design, complemented by a gold band and the logo of the in-game Diamond Dogs unit. The colours are said to be reminiscent of the tech-powered limb of hero Venom Snake.
Inside sits a 500GB hard drive, rather than the 1TB storage found in Sony’s revised machine, but like the original PS4, players can always pop out the hard drive and replace it with something bigger.
The DualShock 4 controller likewise has an updated visual design, clad in metallic grey and again featuring the Diamond Dogs sign.
A Day One edition of The Phantom Pain is also included.
The pack will set you back £364.99, with a £20 deposit required to guarantee one when it’s released on September 1st alongside The Phantom Pain.
If you’re hoping to buy in bulk and use the resulting computing power to control a walking tank equipped with nuclear missiles, tough luck – sales are restricted to one per customer.

The long wait for an official PS3-style dedicated PS4 media remote appears to be nearing an end.
GameSpot spotted a couple of listings for an officially licensed remote from PDP, which is due for a US release in October priced at $30.
Like the PS3 model that came before it, the device works via Bluetooth. It will also work with up to three other devices including compatible TVs, set-top boxes and audio devices. It does, however, feature some PlayStation-specific branding.
Controls include a power button, Share button and all the usual Blu-ray playback controls. The DualShock 4 face buttons are all present and correct, although there don’t appear to be any shoulder button equivalents.

The PS4 is getting its first official universal remote.
As spotted on Amazon and GameStop, peripheral developer PDP's universal remote is the first of its kind officially licensed by Sony. Priced at $29.99, it's slated for an autumn release in North America.
When asked about a European release, a representative from PDP told Eurpgamer, "Currently this product is for the N.American market only. We are in the process of getting this product made available for Europe. We hope to be able to for Q4 this year but [it's] still to be confirmed."
The universal remote will offer complete control over all of the PS4's media playback functions via Bluetooth and it will control up to four devices.
It even has a PS4 Home button, should you wish to switch between apps without turning on your DualShock 4. It will however require two AAA batteries.

If you're an FPS fan, this might be the perfect controller for you. Hori's Tactical Assault Commander 4 is a keyboard and mouse setup for PS4 that attempts to mimic a PC control system. The means the DualShock 4's left analog is mapped to a WASD-style configuration, while the right analog is controlled by a mouse. The rest of the DualShock's buttons and triggers are mapped to the appropriate spots, and there are a couple of additional functions like programmable buttons, a "snipe mode" that changes mouse sensitivity and a walk button for, we assume, walking rather than running.
