Konami has claimed that Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be PSP's "most complete game" when it is released later this month.
The title - which was recently awarded a 40/40 score in Japan games bible Famitsu - is due for release on May 28.
"We have good hopes for Peace Walker, which has been produced by Mr Kojima as the next full entry in the series," Konami UK marketing manager Rosemarie Dalton told industry site MCV.
"It is probably the most complete PSP title for the format, using the various capabilities of the hardware, built within a stunning game engine that brings all the story-telling, aesthetic prowess and action set-pieces that Mr Kojima is famed for.
"Peace Walker is the definitive MGS title for PSP and doesn't hold back just because it is on a handheld."
Creator Hideo Kojima last month questioned whether the humble home console would have a future - as 'play anywhere' Cloud gaming took over.

May 11th, 2010, 19:10 Posted By: wraggster
MCV has been told by a senior global publishing source that price cuts for the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be announced by the end of the year, and possibly as early as next month’s E3.
In addition, it is believed that there’s a strong possibility that Nintendo is also considering a price cut to stave off the increased opposition expected from Microsoft’s Natal and Sony’s PlayStation Move this Q4.
The publishing source in question has revealed that its own financial projections have been constructed around the belief that price drops are planned and that, as a result, console install bases will be higher than current trends point to this Q4.
The increasingly busy Q4 release schedule backs up the belief that publishers are expecting a very busy period in the traditional markets.
The likelihood is that Sony is planning an entry-level £200 PS3 SKU to compliment its existing high-end high-capacity offerings, probably including one controller and a 40GB or 60GB HDD.
Microsoft, meanwhile, is less likely to significantly reduce the RRP of the Xbox 360 and will instead add to existing retail offerings by adding the motion camera Natal to the standard SKU.
Its entry-level bundle is expected to cost between £130-£150, though a Natal-less sub-£100 SKU has also been rumoured.
UPDATE: When asked by MCV, reps for SCE UK have laughed away the claims. A spokesperson for Nintendo told us: "This is total rumour and speculation and we currently have no plans to cut the price of Wii in the UK."

Change your character class at any time merely by swapping hats: Worker, Warrior, Ranger, Mage and Priest
Work together to collect resources to upgrade your weapons and castle defenses

description
Franticly-paced and strategic, Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake pits two hordes of players against each other in comic medieval battle royale on PSP. The player’s goal is to rescue a beloved princess from the enemy castle. There is a catch, though; the adversary has been feeding her magical cake to make her heavier to carry. Therefore, it will take much of the army working together to carry her across the battlefield.
Team balance and strategy is crucial in Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake, as players can switch between five different character classes literally at the drop of a hat. The name of the game is cooperation, whether it is flinging another player over the enemy’s walls with a teeterboard, healing him while he charges into battle, or adding muscle to carry the hearty princess to safety.
The comical, quirky and loveable cast of characters in Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake has been developed specifically for optimization on PSP. Now players can have their cake, and take it on the go, too.

Ever wondered what kind of a penalty bringing down the official website of one of the largest commercial technology manufacturers in the world for 11 days carries with it? If you're the heretofore unnamed 17-year-old from Latrobe, Penn., who managed said feat after being disqualified from a SOCOM tournament for cheating, you're facing 12 months probation, 250 hours of community service and owe $5,000 in damages to Sony.
That was the sentence recently handed down in the grand jury investigation into the teen's "cyber attack" on the official PlayStation site in 2008. Sony's legal representatives initially sought over $33,000 in damages from the young man, though the presiding judge ruled such a fee was "excessive" and reduced it by quite a bit.
Personally, we think 33 Gs would help get the lesson across better. When we were kids, we'd drop five dimes on stuff everyday, you know?

Ahead of an official reveal due at 2pm today, details have been leaked on Media Molecule's sequel to 2008's LittleBigPlanet.
As published by US magazine Game Informer and posted by consumer forum NeoGAF, the game will enable users to create games of all genres, not just platformers.
According to the leak, players will be able to create racing games, puzzle games, shoot-em-ups and RTS and role-playing games.
It will also allow them to create and edit short films, record sound effects, move the in-game camera, produce cutscenes, program enemies and customise the HUD and game's controls.
Content from the original game will also be importable to the new title.
UPDATE: Media Molecule has released a video and official details of the new game, which will indeed give users access to the features described above.

US retailer Costco has given an October 27, 2010 release date for the long-awaited and repeatedly delayed Gran Turismo 5.
Officially the PlayStation 3 exclusive has no specific release date, although Sony has indicated it will come out in the fourth quarter of 2010. However, the game has previously missed several such official and unofficial dates.
Producer Kazunori Yamauchi did recently claim the game to be 90 per cent complete, although the claim is also not new.
Although retailers can often inadvertently reveal release dates ahead of publisher announcements they also often estimate dates in order to drive up pre-orders.
The series is notably more popular in Europe than North America, which can lead to significant differences in release dates.
Despite its propensity for delays the Gran Turismo franchise remains by far Sony's most successful first party franchise, with lifetime sales of over 55 million.

May 10th, 2010, 20:57 Posted By: wraggster
Entertainment giant Sony has been sued for over $5 Million by a disgruntled gamers after removing the "install other OS" feature from their PlayStation 3 console.
The feature allowed users of the console to install the widely used and very popular Linux operating system, which could effectively turn the PS3 into a home computer rather than an entertainment system, a feature which was touted prominently in Sony's marketing when the console was launched in 2007.
Following the removal of the feature due to security concerns earlier this month, California resident Anthony Ventura has launched a class action claim against Sony on behalf of "a nationwide class of all persons who purchased a PS3 during the period November 17, 2006 and March 27, 2010 and who did not resell their PS3", describing the removal of the feature as "based on its own interest and made at the expense of its customers".
Many gamers may not have noticed the removal of the feature, but to the hardcore PS3 user who intends to use the console beyond its obvious gaming and entertainment capabilities, the move was extremely controversial.
However, it was probably only a matter of time before Sony took this step as a part of their ongoing efforts to curb piracy through digital rights management.
The use of Linux as an operating system effectively allowed PS3 users to modify the console as and when they saw fit.
Amazon in the UK have already made a number of refunds to disgruntled customers who have complained that it no longer works in the same way it was advertised when purchased, although Sony have already ruled out such a move.
Under UK Law (the Sale of Goods Act 1979), consumers are fairly well-protected and sellers must provide goods which meet certain minimum standards, the main being that what is being sold must "correspond with their description", be "fit for purpose" and "of satisfactory quality" at the time of purchase.
Consumers expecting a certain functionality from the PS3 may well have valid claims, although there may well be an equally valid defence on the basis that the PS3 remains fit for purpose on the basis for which it is commonly supplied (i.e. as a gaming console rather than a home computer) and that it was of satisfactory quality in terms of "all relevant circumstances", again to be used as a games console.
It's probably fair to say that this claim would be dealt with differently in the EU than the US and it is worth noting that the feature is only removed through a downloadable firmware update.
Although any user refusing to update their console could still use Linux, they would not be able to use other features, such as playback of certain Blu-Ray discs.
It may well be that Sony is willing to risk a flood of similar claims against the potentially huge amount it could lose through the use of modified consoles; to circumvent their DRM system in the wake of the announcement of an available "hack" for the system in January this year by the same user who successfully cracked the iPhone.
In the battle for copyright protection, it may well be the informed gamer who ends up as the loser.

Mouse and keyboard support also confirmed for Media Molecule’s PS3 sequel
LittleBigPlanet 2 will offer limited support for the PlayStation Move controller at launch with fuller, expanded support planned for later down the line.
“We’re really excited by giving the Move controller to the community,” Media Molecule co-founder Mark Healy told VG247.
“We’re totally going to go to town on supporting that, but I don’t think we will have the full functionality at launch. There will be a taster, but it is something we are planning to do.”
In addition, Healey added to NowGamer that the game will also support mouse and keyboard:
“The funny thing is that the PC tools we were using were quite crap, to be honest, a pain in the arse, and it got to the point where the pop-it in Create mode was actually much better.
“We’ve really embraced that now, and from scratch. Which is the obvious thing to do really because it forces us to make the improvements that mean you can do things better and faster, so it’s real-time playtesting of it, if you like. We’ve also added is keyboard and mouse support for the PS3, so you can draw things and navigate Pop-it with a mouse and stuff.”

May 10th, 2010, 16:10 Posted By: Pegasus2000
As you know, Blind Assistant is a software aiming to help visually impaired people through
a set of technologies like voice recognition, voice synthesis, algorithms for artificial vision,
all running in a single homebrew.
The application, developed at Visilab Research Center of the University of Messina, doesn't
require a complex and expensive hardware to work, but it can be executed on a simple
PSP-2000 with 64 Mb of ram.
The last Blind Assistant CFW0005, released a year ago, surprised the world for its great
complexity. In the meantime, Visilab was working on the weak points of the software
in order to make it more reliable and powerful.
The result is Blind Assistant CFW0006: probably the most complex homebrew ever
released. You can download the homebrew here:
http://visilab.unime.it/~filippo/Bli...dAssistant.htm
We have created some videos about what Blind Assistant can actually do:
At the actual stage, Blind Assistant provides seven functionalities:
1) Voice clock and calendar Pressing the START key, the blind can obtain the
date and the time by the console
2) Face recognition The system uses the PentLand Component Analysis (PCA),
algorithm, speeded up by the use of Sony VFPU, for recognizing the names and the position
of the people that are present in that moment in the room. In this release, it has
been implemented a new memory manager that manages dinamically the available
ram, allowing to obtain better performances.
3) Position recognition Using the SIFT (Scalar Image Feature Transform) algorithm,
Blind Assistant is able to recognize the room where the blind is. As the SIFT algorithm
is too computationally expensive for the small processor of PSP, the image is sent via
wi-fi to a server, called BlindServer, that runs on a x86 PC. The SIFT analysis is done inside
the server and the answer is returned via wi-fi. In this new version of Blind Assistant,
the client tries to connect to the server everytime it is necessary, and not only at
startup like in the previous releases.
4) Optical char recognition Blind Assistant is able to read a text in a frame grabbed
by the camera. For this new release, a new technology has been implemented: ndTesseract
(it replaces the old ndOcrad engine for the internal scanning method).
ndTesseract is a version of the OCR originally developed by Google, that is able to run,
for the first time in the world, on the small MIPS processor of the Sony console. The result is
of extra-ordinary importance, because Tesseract is actually the OCR, among the open-
source solutions, that provides the best recognition rate. The execution of a complex
software like Tesseract inside an homebrew has been made possible using the
Varangozov memory manager, a new technology that will be released in the next
Nanodesktop 0.5 and that will make the nd applications up to three times faster than
now.
5) Data matrix scanner Blind Assistant is able to recognize the data matrix labels,
compatible with standard ISO/IEC 16022:2006 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_matrix_(computer)).
This new functionality is very important, because the data matrix labels
can be used for object recognition, collision avoidance, for reading the content of
different boxes, for reading the labels of the drugs etc. The scanner operates at a
frequency of 1 Hz and it is able to recognize the labels independently from rotations,
scaling or variation in pose. The content is read to the blind through the integrated
voice synthesizer
6) Mail reader. Blind Assistant integrates a small mail reader. Thanks to the
introduction of the ndVMIME library, the software is able to manage both HTML or
plain text mails now. Furthermore, during the other operations of the system,
a daemon is run in background: it checks, every nn minutes, if new mails have
arrived. In this case, a voice advice is emitted and the blind is invited to read the
new messages that have arrived.
7) Fixer tools When Blind Assistant encounters some error conditions, like errors
in the database stored in the memory stick, it executes automatically some routines that
fix the problem without any necessity of operations by the user.
Blind Assistant requires a PSP-2000 and a Sony GoCam camera. A reduced version of the
software for PSP-1000 users (sharing the same source code, but with many functionalities
disabled) is provided too. At startup Blind Assistant Loader shall select automatically the
core that is right for your platform.
The users of the old Blind Assistant CFW0005 can update their application via internet
using the automatic update feature.
I want to remember you, in fact, that Blind Assistant is
able to auto-update itself with the new versions released by Visilab.
I hope that this tool can be useful, and that the staff can dedicate a "news in home" for this notice.
Thanks in advance
Filippo Battaglia

Hi Guys,
I have made a little demo video of my embedded web server that allows
a user to open my garage door using a web browser.
The web browser can be running on a PC, or mobile device such as a mobile phone,
or in the case of this video, a Sony PSP.
Quite a lot had to come together to make this happen,
but it is not a permanent setup.
This particular application was setup for the demo video only.
Cheers, Art.

The Lavalit Team have released a new build of Openbor for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Gp2x, Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of Beats Of Rage originally created by the wonderful
folks over at http://www.senileteam.com
History
----------------------
As fans of the 'Streets of Rage' series that originally appeared on the SEGA
megadrive/genesis, we always wanted to see streets of rage 4. But the waiting
proved futile, and streets of rage 4 never came. That's why we tried to correct
this mistake and fill the void by making the ultimate tribute to Streets of Rage:
Beats of Rage!!
Development
----------------------
Beats of Rage was created by Senile Team. However, the character sprites and
some parts of the backgrounds are taken from 'the King of Fighters' games by
SNK Playmore. Therefore special thanks go out to SNK Playmore and SEGA who
unknowingly helped in creating this game.
Beats of Rage and OpenBOR are a free, fully functional game, which includes
music, and features six playable levels plus a bonus level. It is available
for many systems

Two more class-action lawsuits were brought against Sony Computer Entertainment over the removal of Other OS from the Playstation 3. Both of the new lawsuits, much like the earlier lawsuit, were filed in the United States District Court for the northern district of California.
The first of the two lawsuits, filed on April 30, 2010 on behalf of Jason Baker, Sean Bosquett, Frank Bachman, Paul Graham, and Paul VanNatta carries the following allegations against Sony: Breach of Contract, Breach of the Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, violation of California's Unfair Competition Law, as well as violation of California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act (the two California laws are relevant because SCEA's headquarters are within the Northern District of California). This suit asks for the award of damages to all members of the class (PS3 purchasers from 2006 through March 27, 2010, excluding those associated directly with Sony), restitution of moneys paid as well as disgorgement of all profits unjustly retained by Sony, injunctive relief, attorney's fees, and any other further relief deemed appropriate by the court. The Plaintiffs in this case have demanded a Jury Trial.
The second case, filed on May 5th, 2010 on behalf of Todd Densmore and Antal Herz alleges the following: Breach of Contract, Breach of the Implied Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, Trespass to Chattels, Unjust Enrichment, violation of California's Consumers Legal Remedies Act, violation of the Federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, violation of California's False Advertising Law and violation of California's Unfair Competition Law. This lawsuit asks for an order awarding injunctive and declaratory relief, restitution and/or disgorgement, damages with interest at the maximum rate allowable by law, attorney's fees, and any other relief deemed appropriate by the court. Once again, the Plaintiffs in this suit have demanded a trial by jury.
Both of these suits are interesting in the fact that they allege that Sony committed fraud in the removal of Other OS, which could imply treble damages that are much more than any actual damages incurred. It could be interesting to see how Sony deals with three lawsuits all alleging different misconduct on the part of Sony in regard to the removal of Other OS, and if any of these will be settled out of court (as seems to be the case with the majority of class action lawsuits).
Personally, I'd be happy if they were to just reinstate the feature and sign an affidavit to never attempt to remove it again.
Source: IGN (actual legal filings are linked to from there, and they're somewhat interesting to read, if you can wade through the legalese)

Though the first day of the working week is typically despised by most intelligent lifeforms -- especially Garfield -- we've got something to look forward to this coming Monday. Following information about Game Informer's feature article on LittleBigPlanet 2, Media Molecule Tweeted that the game is, in fact, real, and that we can expect "full mega details on Monday."
Details supposedly culled from the Game Informer feature have already found their way online, but we think we can wait another 48 hours for the first-hand skinny.

modrobert writes: "JaicraB and the rest of the HadesTeam have continued dumping PS3 RAM (previous story here) and are now looking for help creating a custom otheros.bld (OtherOS boot loader) with glitch hack (exploit) support to dump the PS3 Lv2 RAM. I'm having problem understanding the Google translated blog post (and my Spanish skills sucks) but suspect they want to dump RAM via otheros.bld because they need a clean RAM dump done early in the boot process, not contaminated by PS3 Linux or other data loaded into RAM. JaicraB has already written software to extract the key from RAM dumps, but it will not do much without good input data. Note that this is based on logic assumptions rather than the confusing Google translation, so please correct me if I'm wrong. "

Want to play Lost Planet 2 on PlayStation 3? Save 4.61 GB of hard drive space for it. Lost Planet 2 has a mandatory install. Hopefully, this means the sequel won’t be as sluggish as the PlayStation 3 port of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition.
I’m installing it, but there isn’t anything interesting to report other than a guy running around with his gun pointed in front of him underneath Akrid.

Square Enix has revealed that the PlayStation Network re-release of Final Fantasy IX will hit Japanese consoles on 20th May.
The Japanese release date was revealed via a tweet by Square Enix producer Shinji Hashimoto (helpfully translated by Andriasang). The tweet also included a brief video showing the game running on a PSP.
Outside of Japan, the US Playstation blog has mentioned that the game will be "coming soon" to the US PSN.
A European release date and price points for all regions have not been revealed. Square Enix has not responded to a request for comment.
It was only a few weeks ago that we first heard Square Enix was considering a downloadable re-release for the popular PlayStation RPG.
