MonkeyPaw Games returns today with more PSOne imports, including a secondDezaemon shooter-creation utility! Available today for $6, Dezaemon Kidsfurther simplifies the creation interface for scrolling shooters, and -- oh yeah -- throws in over 100 sample games. It's a good thing the interface is designed with simplicity in mind, because as with all the PSOne imports, the text is presented in the original Japanese.
The other game, Arcade Hits: Magical Drop, is a port of the original arcade game in Data East's beloved color-matching puzzle series. Both will be available whenever the PSN update happens today.

For those of you concerned with the actual game bundled with the King of Soundtracks, SNK producer Kei Yamamoto promises better netcode in King of Fighters XIII. "In order to improve the online performance, our netcode received a complete overhaul," Yamamoto told PlayStation Blog."We reexamined the threshold level, optimized the content of the transmitted data, and changed the way the game handled increased net traffic, among other things."
He also responded noncommittally but positively to the idea of a King of Fighters game on the PlayStation Vita. "The PlayStation Vita controls well," Yamamoto said, "the titles being released are appealing, and user impressions are good, so I am very interested in it, not just as a developer but as a user as well. Personally, I'd love to work on a KOF title for PS Vita if the opportunity arises." It would go great with that tiny arcade stick we couldn't be wishing harder for.

The PlayStation 3 version of enchanting point and click game Machinarium is the "ultimate version", developer Amanita Design has said. The PS3 version of Machinarium, due out in February 2012, is "more fluent" than other versions, Amanita founder Jakub Dvorský told Eurogamer at the GameCity6 festival in Nottingham."This PlayStation version will be the ultimate version of Machinarium," he said. "There will be a few new features, such as zoom. You will have the ability to zoom to certain places. There will be Trophies. It will be more fluent. It's a really nice version. I'm quite happy with it. We're looking forward to it."Machinarium on PS3 supports the PS Move controller, enabling actual point and click gameplay. But for Dvorský the game plays best on the DualShock."For me it's even better with the usual game pad controller because it's very easy to control this game with a game pad," he said. "We integrated a magnetic feature so when you are moving around a hotspot with the thumb stick it magnetises. It's quite easy to navigate and control the game. There are also more buttons for opening the inventory and for zooming."I like to test it because I can just sit on the couch and watch it on the big TV. It's much more comfortable. Also, many people have a much better sound system in their living room. We're happy people will experience the sound quality and the music - it's very important for us."Amanita's delightful puzzle adventure first launched on PC back in October 2009, winning an 8/10 from Eurogamer's Machinarium review.Meanwhile, Dvorský said Amanita is exploring a number of platforms for the upcoming Samorost 3, including the Wii U."Of course we want to bring it to as many platforms as possible," he said. "Definitely PC, Mac and tablets - iPad and Android tablets. And hopefully also some bigger consoles. We are in contact with Sony. They are interested, so we want to bring it to PlayStation. We're also interested in Xbox. Nintendo Wii U looks promising because it will be a powerful machine and that's what we want."Our games are not based on skills or controlling mechanism. It would work with many different styles of navigation. We're not concerned about control mechanism. Any platform is good for us if it's powerful enough."One platform Amanita's games will not appear on, however, is the Wii. "We don't like Wii because the resolution is so low and there is a size limit on WiiWare of 40MB, which is so low for nowadays," Dvorský explained. "It's crazy."

Sony's Consumer Products & Services division - which includes the PlayStation business and LCD televisions - suffered a ¥34.6 billion loss ($449m) for the second quarter ended September 30, down from the ¥1 billion profit for the same period last year.
Sales were down to ¥779.7 billion ($10.1bn) for the quarter compared to ¥889 billion, with the PlayStation 3 price cut and software sales as a contributing factor. The company lowered the price of its console in August this year across all regions.
However, it was the manufacturing costs associated with the LCD business that not only pulled the Consumer Products & Services division down, but hit the entire Sony Corporation's bottom line.
Sony Corp recorded losses of ¥1.6 billion ($21m) for the period, down from ¥68.7 billion profit in 2010. Sales were down just over 9 per cent from ¥1.7 trillion to ¥1.5 trillion, with the company blaming continued weak performance in TV sales and manufacturing.
For the full 2011 financial year Sony now expects profits of ¥25.9 billion, down over 80 per cent on last year's ¥135.7 billion, with sales of ¥3 trillion, down from ¥3.3 trillion.
Sony sold 3.7 million PlayStation 3 consoles during the 3 months, up from 3.5 million in 2010, and 1.7 million PlayStation Portable units, up from 1.5 million. The PlayStation 2 shifted another 1.2 million, down from 1.5 million.
PlayStation 3 software topped 37.4 million units, up from 35.3 million, with PSP software at 8.1 million, down from 11 million in 2010. PlayStation 2 game sales dropped from 5.6 million to 2.8 million.

Rockstar has released the debut trailer for GTA V - and the series is to return to San Andreas.
The trailer shows a variety of sun-drenched, mock-Californian locations, both rural and urban. The anonymous voiceover suggests that, while Rockstar is to once again repeat the story ofGTA IV with a reformed criminal seeking redemption in the American dream, it realises that sending the player out on violent crime sprees within an hour rather dulls the point.
"I wanted to retire from what I was doing, from that line of work," he says. "Be a good guy for once - a family man…But, well, you know how it is."
The San Andreas setting, like Liberty City, gives Rockstar access to a melting pot of social and ethnic diversity, and the trailer shows Hispanic workers harvesting crops as a duster flies overhead, homes being repossessed and the homeless out on the streets, contrasted with the high-rises, oil drilling and golf clubs shown elsewhere.
Despite the variety of locations and the range of activities on show, the trailer is understated, but extremely self-assured. This is the open world as a place rather than a playground, following the same ethos set by GTA IV. Not shown so far is evidence of MotionScan-powered facial animation (as used in LA Noire), whether the game world will extend to San Andreas' Las Venturas or San Fierro, or any specific look at who the protagonist is.
And the soundtrack? , by the Small Faces.

The PlayStation 3 is getting closer to overtaking lifetime sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 .
Sony's latest financial results reveal that lifetime, worldwide sales of the PS3 totalled 55.5 million units at the end of its financial quarter on September 30. Last month, Microsoft confirmed that lifetime sales of the Xbox 360 stood at 57.6 million units, with hardware shipments declining year on year.
During the quarter, Sony sold 3.7 million PS3s, an increase of 200,000 units - or 5.7 per cent - year on year. Software sales rose by a similar proportion, climbing 5.9 per cent to 37.4 million units.
Despite the improved sales, Sony's Consumer Products And Services division - which includes its PlayStation business as well as PC, mobile, camera, and TV and video - was hit with a quarterly loss of ¥34.6 billion (£277.6 million).

While he neglected to sling any specific mud at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund believes that Battlefield 3multiplayer will make players "feel loyal" to the game, even in the face of Activision's annual juggernaut. "We all respect what Call of Duty brings and what they're going to come with," Soderlund recently told IGN, though he believes EA has "an industry-leading multiplayer game that will make people want to stay with us, frankly."
Soderlund sees Battlefield 3's multiplayer as a service that allows players to "continually get updates and new content and hopefully improvements to the product as we go." One such piece of content will be this December's "Back to Karkand" DLC, which Soderlund promises will contain more destruction than the current multiplayer maps. "It's a different level, even more so than in BF3," he said, adding that the DLC team made a "deliberate decision" to ratchet up the destruction for the upcoming content. Sounds like fun, so long as it doesn'tdestroy the servers too.

Sony Online Entertainment's MMO epic, DC Universe Online, is now official free to play.
The game has arrived on PSN this week with our favourite four-letter 'F'-word sitting next to it. Free, guys. Free.
Sony Online Entertainment executive producer Lorin Jameson made the announcement back in September, saying that the company was altering the PC and PS3 MMO's business model because the cost of the game exceeded the company's original forecast.
"In terms of 'Is it a result in a drop in subs' - absolutely not," he said. "This is the right business model. If I can be honest, the game ended up costing a lot more than we thought it would, and this was our preferred business model from day one," he said.
So get online and download it now, you've got nothing to lose. It'll burn up an afternoon at least.

The platform has been given a thorough overhaul. It is now split into genre-specific areas, dubbed "districts", to improve discoverability. Players are able to join multiplayer games immediately from each district, with the recently announced free-to-play FPS Bootlegger 29 available in the Action district, and Adventure themed around Uncharted 3, which launched in Europe yesterday. Also new are the self-explanatory Sportswalk, and lo-fi showcase Indie Park.
In a press release, SCEE head of online marketing Darren Cairns said: "The new revamp of PlayStation Home puts you right at the centre of a world of games. We now have multiple spaces, games and activities themed around the type of games you know and love on your PS3 - and it's free to join in and have a look around."
The revamp was announced in August, and is a natural consequence of the April launch of Home 1.5, which added new developer tools for graphics, physics and multiplayer games.
Sony recently said the PSN outage had positively affected user numbers and game revenue, and the same applies to home: in June, Home director Jack Buser said the service saw a new record number of users in the week the service was restored.

Ubisoft has announced Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
Patriots, due in 2013, is in development at Ubisoft Montreal with support from the publisher's Toronto and Red Storm studios, and is the first instalment in the 25 million-selling franchise since 2006'sRainbow Six: Vegas.
In a press release, Ubisoft creative director David Sears said: "Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6. In Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction."
Specifically, that narrative shift means multiple protagonists. The principal threat in the game is a revolutionary group called the True Patriots, rising up against "greedy politicians and corporate special interests." New cooperative and multiplayer modes are also promised.

If you, like us, have felt jilted as other territories received a glut of Square Enix RPGs while the U.S. got table scraps, it's time to relieve yourself of your worries.PlayStation Blog has just announced the "Winter of RPGs" campaign, which will see the release of three much-desired PSOne Classics on the PSN: Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6.
You'll be able to grab the character-rich Chrono Cross next Tuesday, November 8, the career-oriented Final Fantasy 5 on November 22, and the positively operatic Final Fantasy 6 on December 6. It's nice that they'll finally be on there -- though forcing them to compete for our free time with Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, Uncharted 3 and Assassin's Creed: Revelations seems, well, kind of mean.

Though the title implies otherwise, Ridge Racer: Unbounded's development period has been given strict bounds. Developer Bugbear absolutely must be finished making the surprising new racer by March 6 of next year ... because that's the release date.
Namco Bandai also released a new trailer focusing on multiplayer gameplay. Luckily, that's been captured within some pretty clear limits as well. Specifically, the little window above.

If you've managed to avoid checking out the deleted scenes in Heavy Rain, you'll get a chance to finally play through them when Heavy Rain Director's Cutlaunches on November 8. In addition to scrapped content, the re-release also includes The Taxidermist DLC, the soundtrack, eight bonus making-of videos, a few themes, concept art and two trailers, PlayStation Blog reports. There's also a new front-end menu and UI with Move support.
To celebrate the (re)launch, Sony's making the Heavy Rain Crime Scene Dynamic Theme available on PSN the same day. We're sure that'll fill the void in your heart left by the child you lost at that mall one time, you monster.

You've likely gleaned as much from yesterday's big Grand Theft Auto V debut trailer, but this morning's official announcement of the game from Rockstar confirms a "Los Santos" (Los Angeles-ish) setting, as well as the return of online multiplayer. "Grand Theft Auto V focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California," the release reads, specifically pointing to "Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside, and beaches" as the locales.
Predictably, the announcement calls GTAV "the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created," and company co-head Sam Houser characterizes the project as "another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe." From that debut teaser, we're ... awaiting further evidence of that "radical reinvention" Houser promises. But hey, at least it looks like planes are back in the mix!
Despite making the game even more official, Rockstar has yet to announce a release window or platforms for the Rockstar North-led project.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is expected to generated revenues of $1.1 billion in its first six weeks.
That's according to Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter, who suggested the game will sell 10 per cent more than previous title Black Ops.
Pachter also estimated that the Call of Duty Elite premium service could pull in up to 4 million subscribers by the end of the year.
As noted by our sister site Industrygamers, Call of Duty: Black Ops generated $650 million in its first five days, up from Modern Warfare 2's $550 million.
The highly anticipated sequel is due for release next week, November 8.

A leaked video from a cut-scene contained in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 could well reveal some of the content that will likely spark tabloid controversy upon the game’s release next week.
Though MCV will neither post the video now reveal critical plot spoilers, a brief description of the content is as follows:
In it a family of American tourists are seen approaching Big Ben in London. A young girl, perhaps six or seven, is seen to be excitedly dancing on a pavement next to a parked van. Which then explodes, killing everyone nearby.
Kotaku has chosen to be far more open about the content should you wish for more details.
Though it’s easy to immediately draw comparison with Modern Warfare 2’s infamous No Russian mission, there are key differences – the most notable of which is that gamers do not “play” this section in MW3. It is just a cut-scene.
That’s unlikely to stop a severe reaction, however, particularly as the UK press has already proved sensitive about the game’s London levels.

Modern Warfare 3 executive producer Mark Rubin has been discussing how the media handles inflammatory material in games, suggesting "a lot of outlets play things up" just to get a reaction.
"Yeah, we get a lot of that and it's tough," he told OXM, "but for the most part what happens is a lot of media outlets play it up, and it goes on some Friday afternoon, Friday night news thing, and they talk about how horrible it is that they're killing people in the middle of our subway, but it's the cricket after that, and no-one cares."Rubin was speaking shortly before a Modern Warfare 3 video leaked showing off a section of the game in which a family of tourists is struck by an explosion releasing a chemical attack on London. It has quickly been dubbed the game's equivalent of the infamous 'No Russian' sequence in Modern Warfare 2.
Rubin added: "The media a lot of times plays on it because they hope to get something out of it, rile somebody up to start a conversation about it, but everybody kind of stares at them just going: 'Next...oh, that's an interesting story.' And they pass right over it."

A truck containing around 6000 copies of Modern Warfare 3 was hijacked and stolen in France, according to reports.
French site TFI News reports that the truck suffered a collision with a car on saturday morning in Créteil, south Paris, before two masked individuals emerged.
The criminals reportedly used tear gas to neutralise the truck drivers before hopping in and making off with the video game shipment said to be worth 400,000 Euros.
Separate reports say the truck contained a delivery of Activision's much-anticipated shooter, Modern Warfare 3 - an estimated 6000 copies of it.
This wouldn't be the first theft Activision has suffered, after an employee reportedly stole a copy of the game from a shipping warehouse in California before pirating the disc and uploading it to the internet.
Activision has warned that playing Modern Warfare 3 before it's official release is "not authorised" and that doing so may earn you a ban.

Another home-brewed plugin from Frostegater ... by way of bsanehi -- thanks again, bsanehi! This is XMB Control, which you may or may not remember... XMB Control, or xmbctrl for short, seamlessly integrates the custom VSH menu under [System Settings] of the XMB. Take all those VSH menu options and put 'em under [System Settings] for cleaner and better control. And XMB Control is compatible with PRO and ME custom firmwares.
"XMB Control" stems from TN's original implementation found in 6.20 TN-E. Click the aforementioned link to see what I mean and what xmbctrl is all about.
v1.5 CHANGELOG
•United ME xmbctrl and PRO xmbctrl in one PRX file. Current: if you FW (L)ME, loaded ME xmbctrl, else if PRO, loaded PRO xmbctrl.
•Fixed reading of text files: translates, spoof. For PSPgo.
•Fixed spoof MAC address for PSP-1000 (Fat).
•Moved directory for translates: ‘/seplugins/xmbcontrol/procfw_translates/’ and ‘/seplugins/xmbcontrol/mecfw_translates/’.

via http://psp.dashhacks.com/2011/11/03/vergen-v10-released
For anyone who doesn't know, version.txt is a text file that holds certain details pertaining to the current firmware version installed on your PSP. Some features/functions, like upgrading your firmware, check this file first. Games too... You can edit this file to bypass certain firmware checks in games and demos. So for example, if you're old school running 5.00 GEN or M33 and a game you wish to play requires a later firmware version, you simply edit this file, save it back to flash0 and now that game *may* work.
Frostegater's "verGen" generates this file -- version.txt -- for you as it holds more info than just the firmware version number; verGen also writes said file back to flash0 under /vsh/etc/. Don't worry though -- it's safe ... or should be anyway.

Japanese society connects the bad news lately. 2011 alone, the firm has endured earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, piracy and the suspension of its online services for long (and expensive) week, the yen's appreciation against the euro and the dollar, and, more recently, the flooding of its plants cameras in Thailand.
In the third quarter of 2011, Sony has posted a net loss of the equivalent of $ 350 million (27 billion yen), against a net profit of about $ 400 million last year. Its turnover for its part, reached the equivalent of $ 20.4 billion (1575 billion yen), down 9.1%. This poor quarter for its main source of poor sales LCD TVs, including North America and Europe, as well as price reductions granted on the PS3. Climatic events in Japan have not helped over its finances. The film and music are doing well As far as good news, Sony still note that its film division is increasing, with a turnover of 2 , $ 2 billion (+17%) and net income of $ 268 million, against a loss of 62 million last year. Its Music Division, although declining, is also beneficial. It has a cumulative revenue of $ 1.346 billion (-6.6%) and a net profit of $ 82 million (-21.9%). But this does not compensate for losses in any of the other divisions. Hundreds of millions of profits over 1 billion loss ... results for its fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, Sony provides just one sales well below the previous year (-9.7%), but especially its operating profit collapsed. From 200 billion yen expected in July, this time on Sony shelf ... 20 billion yen, $ 256 million. Not surprisingly, therefore, sees Sony's bottom line. On a profit of $ 768 million, the Japanese firm now expects a net loss of 1, 152 billion dollars ... This is the story of a battery for Sony, it is indeed a catastrophe. Especially when one recalls that the company posted a net loss of $ 3.3 billion last year. But the creator of the PlayStation, this accumulation of problems in 2011 is not exceptional. That will be the fourth consecutive year of net losses. The year 2008 was particularly lasting impression with the millions of laptop computers worldwide because of the recalled Sony batteries a bit too hot ... The last flames do are never really off. tikilou Thanks for the information

PCSX2 SVN r4956 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r4955
GSdx: Bogus MSB bits of TEX0.CSA should be ignored as it looks. Only corrected where the palette is read (this fixes "Idol Janshi Suchie-Pai IV"), writes to the CLUT may be handled the same way, but so far no game has been found broken because of this.
r4956
GSdx: Also wrapping CLUT writes now, previous revision broke SFEX. CLUT buffer overruns are very rare, tell me if you find any other game doing it

Credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's has downgraded Sony’s credit rating to A-, citing concerns over long-term corporate credit and senior unsecured debt ratings.
The likelihood of Sony's weak earnings persisting “has increased”, the ratings group said.
“There are no signs of a halt to the deterioration in the earnings of the company's core flat panel TV business. In addition, Sony's financial burden is likely to increase in tandem with the company's making Sony Ericsson a wholly owned subsidiary.
“Taking these factors into consideration, we have concluded that we need to review the prospects for Sony's operating and financial performance and verify the effects on the rating.”

"We are still investigating, but it appears that some internal story files have been leaked," Mass Effect 3 producer Jesse Houston admitted on the company's forums. Apparently said story files aren't representative of "the final story experience," but Houston's urging fans nonetheless to skip reading them, "if they want to experience the purest form of the story in Mass Effect 3."
Perhaps even crazier in ME3 leak news, the game's private beta became notably public for people participating in the preview for the upcoming Dashboard reboot, with an approximately 13 minute video running through the entire thing. It kinda, sorta contains some light spoilers, but it's nothing you haven't already heard about in preview coverage (the beta is identical content to what we've seen of ME3 in various press events, minus co-op). As previously noted, the leaked beta is missing a variety of major technical aspects (animation issues, missing sound), so it's not the best representative of the game's final product, but it is a chance to see some early Husk murder. And boy do we like Husk murders!

PlayStation Move’s second Christmas is backed by a £2m marketing blitz.
Sony is promoting seven new PlayStation 3 releases out this month that are compatible with the first-party motion accessory.
“We’re using a two-tiered marketing approach for the PlayStation Move activity this year to engage the consumer and make Move and its software must-haves for 2011,” SCE UK’s Move product manager John Aikins told MCV.
“The hero tier focuses on genre-defining titles that enable the consumer to exploit the full functionality of Move, including DanceStar Party, Medieval Moves and EyePet and Friends. We have TV sponsorship spots around Nickelodeon and Disney XD. You’ll also see EyePet and Friends and Medieval Moves cinema ads against some of the biggest family movies this Christmas.
“Our range tier activity includes Start the Party: Save the World, Move Fitness, Move Mind Bender, AfterHours Athletes and Carnival Island. You’ll see this software advertised around TV shows such as the The X Factor, Family Fortunes, Coronation Street and TV Burp.
“The online activity is split up into three segments – mothers, mainstream and motion control consumers.”
EyePet & Friends and Move Mind Benders are released on November 11th, with Start the Party: Save the World, Medieval Moves and Carnival Island are due one week later on November 18th. AfterHours Athletes and Move Fitness will hit shelves on November 25th. DanceStar Party is on sale now.

Animal rights group PETA has accused Battlefield 3 developer DICE of encouraging sadistic violence towards animals.A press release issued by the organisation's German office and translated byBattlefield3blog, condemns a sequence in the game's third single player mission where players can nonchalantly impale a rat with a knife."The realistic computer game Battlefield 3 treats animals in a sadistic manner. The game gives players the option to kill a rat with a combat knife in the back in order to then lift it by its tail, then toss it away," it read. The statement went on to claim this sort of shocking violence can have can have "a brutalising effect on the young male target audience.""There have been repeated cases of animal cruelty in Germany, where young people kill animals. Inspiration behind these acts often came from movies and computer games."This isn't the first time that PETA has got its knickers in a twist over a video game. Last year it expressed outrage at the lack of a vegetarian option in fleshy indie platformer Super Meat Boy, countering with a spoof effort called Super Tofu Boy, much to developer Team Meat's amusement.

As if hearing the call of indies bemoaning the rising trend in retail exclusives for the big chains, Tecmo Koei is releasing a limited edition that’s exclusive for indies.
Independent stockists who order the turn-based strategy RPG Disgaea 4 on PS3, released last Firday (November 4th), will receive a collectable ‘FUKA’ figure with each copy. These will not be available to national retail chains.
“The figures will not be available as part of any other retail offer across the UK,” Tecmo Koei’s VP of sales and marketing Will Curley told MCV.
“The indie retail market has been very supportive of this cult series of RPGs over the years, so Tecmo Koei and CentreSoft are trying to do their best for the sector this Christmas.”
Independent retailers can order the game from CentreSoft.

After what has felt like a long, long wait Activision’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is finally here, and the games press is unanimous for its praise.
“Infinity Ward may have changed, but its standards haven’t, delivering a consistent 60fps, zero controller latency, explosive set-pieces, robust multiplayer and military characters you actually give a damn about,” Edge wrote in its 9/10 review.
“Wherever Call Of Duty goes from here, Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare trilogy stands as this generation’s defining FPS series – and Modern Warfare 3 is an emphatic, feature-packed and sometimes stunning final act.”
The Guardian awarded the title top marks of 5/5, stating: “Modern Warfare is, in its third incarnation, what it has always been – a rampaging shooter with a moral compass so bent out of shape, your head spins at the madness of it all. Yet really, if you want to ask questions about the morality of war as entertainment, you should perhaps begin your quest with Homer or even chess. This game isn't for you. It never was, and it never will be.”
Eurogamer was marginally less enthused with its 8/10, concluding: “That the single-player story brings the Modern Warfare saga to a fairly definitive end is, then, cause for celebration. Whatever next year's entry brings, some measure of reinvention will be essential.
“For now, its exuberant blend of testicular bravado and blockbuster gloss ensures that Call of Duty retains its crown as the shooter genre's biggest, boldest rollercoaster ride for at least one more year.”
Videogamer gave the game a 9/10, saying: “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 doesn't do anything new, but it also doesn't do anything wrong. For better or worse, this is a slick and well-metered trio of modes that make an entertaining package, but Sledgehammer Games and Infinity Ward are simply looking to augment previous games rather than expand the series into pastures new.
“Modern Warfare 3 is another beat in the colossally successful rhythm Activision has mastered, but what this year's game lacks in imagination it makes up for in quality.”
And CVG, while scoring it 9/10, did have caveats: “The IW engine isn't Captain Price, seemingly impervious to the passing of time. Keep on ignoring Frostbite and you'll end up losing digits – off your sales. But such is the bluster of Call of Duty that these matters can be put on hold, at least for the next two years.
“We can get back to enjoying what we do have - more of the Call of Duty that so dazzled in 2007. Counterbalancing a bold, brash campaign with marginally more thoughtful online options is a nice touch - not that the legions of fans need convincing. To them, Modern Warfare 3 offers the best seat in the house: the one in front of the telly.”

According to Lazard Capital Markets' Atul Bagga, as reported by GameSpot, pre-orders for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 were nearly three times that ofBattlefield 3, which pegs Activision's shooter at around 9 million pre-orders. The estimate puts Modern Warfare 3 pre-orders roughly 70 percent ahead of those for Modern Warfare 2 and 55 percent beyond Call of Duty: Black Ops. Furthermore, the analyst expects Modern Warfare 3 to move a full 20 million copies by the end of the year.
Those aren't exactly outlandish estimates, given the success of the franchise. Perhaps a more interesting study would be to gauge how many people are skipping work to play. Frankly, with Skyrim launching later this week, we fear worldwide productivity will flatline forever.

Saints Row 4 is already in the early stages of development, despite Saints Row: The Third not even being on shelves yet, judging by comments made by THQ exec Danny Bilson. As seen in a teaser clip from an impending X-Play interview, Bilson claimed he already knows what direction Volition is planning to take with the next game in its open world crime series."I already know what Saints Row 4 is about, and it is wilder than this one. It's a good example of how you take what you have and you say, 'What can happen in the next?'"A little more context to his comments should be forthcoming tomorrow, when the full interview airs.Saints Row: The Third swaggers into stores from 18th November, for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Japan doesn't appear to be bowled over by PlayStation Vita and Wii U.Just 10 per cent of 1083 people surveyed do want to buy either machine, according to goo Research data reported by IndustryGamers.Alarmingly, more than half the participants weren't at all interested in either PlayStation Vita or Wii U.A third don't want to buy Wii U or Vita, but at least have some interest in them. The survey was conducted in October and consisted of a roughly equal male-female split, and of participants spread relatively evenly across five age brackets: teen, twenties, thirties, forties and fifties.Just under two thirds of participants had a games console. Most owned DS (62 per cent), followed by PS2 (53 per cent), PSP (34 per cent), PS3 (28 per cent) and Wii (6 per cent).Wii U apathy could be attributed to the device carrying an 'after April 2012' release date, which probably means Christmas 2012 at best. Plus, there are still a lot of questions unanswered about the device. But the indifference to PlayStation Vita is worrying. The handheld launches in Japan on 17th December - under six weeks away. And if any region could be expected to be excited about PS Vita, it should be Japan - Sony's most lucrative PSP market.Has the lack of a true Vita Monster Hunter game, besides the adapted PSP game Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, hurt Vita's early Japanese chances?

Ahead of the possible release of concrete numbers later today, Activision has claimed that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was the most pre-ordered game ever released.
Of course, this puts the title on track to break the sales records set by immediate predecessor Call of Duty: Black Ops. Pre-orders for MW3, in fact, beat it “by a wide margin”.
In addition, the launch of the game became Activision’s largest ever day one shipment. COO and CFO Thomas Tippl even claims that it’s the largest day one shipment ever seen in the entire industry.
He also claims that a total of 13,000 retailers across the globe opened their doors at midnight to serve a total of 1.5m consumers.
“The launch of Modern Warfare 3 was the largest in Activision Blizzard's history, and our global organization remains laser-focused on delivering the largest entertainment launch of all time for the third consecutive year and to exceed the record set by Black Ops life-to-date,” CEO Bobby Kotick added.

Square Enix is enticing vintage RPG fans with a PSOne Classics "Winter of RPGs" promotion. It's not alone in populating the store with new old RPGs, however. MonkeyPaw Games informed us that Vanguard Bandits will be released in North America on November 15, for $9.99. That puts it right between Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy V.
Vanguard Bandits is a strategy RPG developed by Human Entertainment, and published in North America by Working Designs. Players battle giant robots called ATACs (All Terrain Armored Combatants, of course) in grid-based environments.

Call of Duty: Black Ops has sold 20 million map packs to date. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg noted the latest figure during yesterday's conference call, where the publisher announced strong revenues for the quarter.
"For the first nine months of the year, Black Ops has remained the number one title in the U.S. and Europe, generating more revenue than any new major console release," Hirshberg stated. "The revenues generated from map packs alone would make it the third largest console title of the year."
Black Ops received four map packs after launch, which Hirshberg said, "Further demonstrates that there is continued consumer interest in the content even 11 months after the launch, making playing Call of Duty truly a year-round activity for millions of our fans."
Activision announced 18 millionBlack Ops map packs were sold back in September, before the final sales push of the Rezurrection pack completed.

We first got wind of Sony's PlayStation Suite SDK back at the Tokyo Game Show in September, but the company just opened up the application process for a closed beta test, letting Windows XP and Windows 7 users in the US, UK and Japan submit their credentials for early access. Those getting the nod from Sony will be able to develops apps for use on the PS Vita, which is set to hit in February, along with thePS Suite -- that "hardware-neutral" framework that'll allow access from non-PlayStation branded products, including the Xperia Play, Tablet S and Tablet P, with the potential for third-party devices to come as well. The SDK uses the C# programming language, and doesn't require devs to have access to actual Sony hardware -- so don't expect a Vita to show up at your door anytime this year. Think you have what it takes to be a Sony dev? Hit up the source link to send 'em the word.

PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted: Drake's Deception shipped an impressive 3.8 million units worldwide on release day.
"Uncharted 3 is a blockbuster and these incredible sales figures reflect that. Consumers are clearly as eager to play the game as critics were to heap praise upon it," said SCEE's head of communications Nick Caplin.
"The team at Naughty Dog deserve this fantastic reception at retail. The Uncharted series, exclusive to PlayStation 3, has redefined the third-person adventure genre and is now one of the leading franchises available."
Yesterday Activision announced that Modern Warfare 3 was its biggest game launch ever, but did not release actual sales figures. Analysts Sterne Agee recently predicted 5.5 to 6 million day one sales for the title.

Within the box is the game on Xbox 360 or PS3, a four-disc soundtrack, and a book of exclusive concept art. It'll be available in "limited quantities" at GameStop, Best Buy, and Amazon on January 31.

We get it: every October, it's all about basketball and bank robberies for us, so naturally the top-grossing games on PSN for the month revolve around similar subject matter. The PlayStation Blog reports that the two top games purchased and installed in October are NBA Jam: On Fire Edition and Payday: The Heist in first and second place, respectively.
Taking third place was the re-release of Crysis, followed by Chrono Trigger andResident Evil 4 HD. Also, we're glad to see Odin Sphere debut in the charts at number 15 -- you may recall, its release is part of the "Only on PlayStation Network" campaign where select PS2 games were given new life as PSN titles. We're all for older games (especially good ones) finding a new audience!
You can see the full list of October's top-earners through the source link below. Just try not to flip out too much when you see Real Steel rank higher than God Hand.

More evidence has emerged that God of War 4 is in development - this time from a New Zealand shop.Mighty Ape lists God of War 4 for release on 28th September 2012.It contains a God of War 4 logo, but this has been lifted from a fan made trailer. The release date does, however, back up a report from earlier this year that claimed God of War 4 would release in September 2012.Before that a job advertisement suggested developer Sony Santa Monica might implement multiplayer into the God of War series.God of War III launched early last year as a visual showcase for the PlayStation 3.Sony Santa Monica has said it did not mark the end of the action-packed blockbuster series."This is not the end of God of War," studio boss John Hight said. "This is definitely the end of the trilogy, but we're [going to] continue to do God of War games."We're [going to] be very careful about what we do. We're the keepers of the franchise and we don't want to see it ruined or polluted."The PlayStation 3 exclusive enjoyed a 9/10 in Eurogamer's God of War III review, in which Christian Donlan wrote: "There are no branching paths, no complex decisions, and no multiplayer modes, but this particular game is all the better for it, since the results are rich and focused rather than drawn-out and a little ragged."

Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi has confirmed that GT5 players are set for regular DLC updates, and that Gran Turismo 6 is in development.
"Of course we're working on GT6 already," he told IGN, as he had previously confirmed in an interviewwith AutoWeek way back last year.IGN asked him how he will decide what separates content that will go into GT5 as DLC or held back for GT6.
Yamauchi replied: "I think what really will be the separating factor is; something that we can't update through a DLC is something that obviously has to be saved for GT6. Things that we can provide through DLC we will, so that's really the market difference."
And according to Yamauchi, there's plenty of DLC on the way to GT5. "It's been about a year since we've released the game and in the interim we've had about 15 updates that were performed on the game. These set up the basic platform for the system. Now that we have that out of the way, we're ready to release more expansions and content to add to the game," he said.
"I think that will include cars and trucks that we'll be releasing maybe once every two months or so from here on out. What we do from here on is also really dependent on the reaction of the users to this first DLC that we just released because this is the first one. Now we have the feedback from our customers and we'll see how that will affect what we will do from here."

November 11th, 2011, 01:45 Posted By: wraggster
Gamesbrief analyst Nicholas Lovell believes dedicated handhelds are doomed and that PlayStation Home is the games sector’s ‘unsung hero’ in an entertaining and at times controversial speech at London Games Conference.
In his talk he attempted to persuade the audience which company’s were going to survive the digital transition (or heroes) and which ones wouldn’t (zeros).
He persuaded 82 per cent of attendees that handheld consoles are doomed. He believes dedicated handhelds cannot compete smartphones, and that it only takes a small number of users to stop buying dedicated portables to kill the sector.
“If you are about to launch PlayStation Vita, that’s quite scary,” he said.
But he wasn’t totally down on PlayStation, and believes free-to-play games on PS Home makes it a potential goldmine for the platform holder.
But the audience was not convinced, with 59 per cent of attendees believe Home won’t survive the transition.
“Right now it is unloved and frankly laughed at,” said Lovell. “They’ve just launched a free-to-play FPS in Home. It will be big for the Free-to-play market.”
Lovell also believes Zynga is a zero. He says the company needs to drastically improve its ‘cynical marketing’, where it keeps moving customers to other games until they start spending money. It was an argument that convinced the gaming audience.
Other zeros named by Lovell included subscription MMOs, which he believes is just too risky unless you can match Warcraft numbers. “I don’t think we will see anymore subscription MMOs after The Old Republic,” he said.
He also believes THQ is a zero. He says the big is getting bigger and doesn’t see THQ as having the right brands to compete with the bug guns.
In terms of heroes, Lovell named Gaikai’s business mode ‘better than OnLive’s’ and called Amazon a hero because of Kindle, which 95 per cent of the audience agreed with.

When Sony mentioned that the Vita wouldn't support the PSP's existing UMD library, we had to wonder what would become of the little discs. Sony hinted that something was on the way for physical media aficionados at TGS, but wasn't ready to go into detail yet. Today, however, SCEJ announced the UMD Passport program -- a service that will let Japanese PSP owners register UMD games through a PSP app to secure discounts for repurchasing titles on the new console. The discounted games average between ¥500-1,000 (about $6 and $13, respectively) a pop, but can go for as high as ¥2,400. The UMD registration app hits the Japanese PlayStation store on December 6th, and Sony hopes to make the system compatible with roughly 200 titles. Hit the source links below for Sony's official press release and an initial list of Passport compatible games, in Japanese, of course.

Sony has released a pricing list for its Vita Passport system, which will allow users to download digital versions of their UMD games to play on PlayStation Vita.
Prices for the digital versions of the games appear to range from £4-£12 when converted from the original Yen values. All cost are on top of the original UMD prices.
To enable the process, gamers will need to register and download the UMD Registration Application to their PSP, insert the UMD they want to register and start the application. That UMD will then be uniquely registered to that account to prevent duplication.
200 games from 40 publishers are included in the initial offering, with the most expensive game being Persona 3 at 1500 Yen. A full list of the games has been translated and posted at the NeoGaf forums.
Games registered in this way can also be played in their digital form on PSP or PSPgo.

LA Noire's original response tree was markedly different to the one in the final game, former Team Bondi head Brendan McNamara has revealed, with the "doubt" option originally labelled "force".
Speaking at the Bradford Animation Festival earlier this week, McNamara explained why protagonist Cole Phelps often took a hard line when questioning witnesses when players had expected him to strike a softer, inquisitive tone and tease out further information.
"A lot of people say that Aaron [Staton, who played Phelps] goes a little bit psycho with some of the questions you ask in the game," he said. "When we originally wrote it, the questions you asked were Coax, Force and Lie. So Force was a more aggressive answer, and that's where we actually recorded it.
"But when the game came out, it was Truth, Doubt and Lie, so everyone says that Aaron on the second question goes psycho, but that's just the way we wrote it from before."
McNamara spoke at length about LA Noire's reportedly troubled development, which ultimately led to the studio closing down owing more than a million dollars to its own staff. The PlayStation Vita will join the happy network of PCs, PSPs, and PS3s sharing data now, allowing users to move save data, music, and more from system to system -- or "transfar" it, if you prefer.
The official Vita site updated with details about the Vita's sharing application. That program allows users to back up and store Vita contents to a PC, download games from the PlayStation Store to a PC or PS3 and copy them over, and copy music, video, and pictures back and forth. If you plan to play games mostly at home, a PC offers much cheaper storage than a large Vita memory card.
At the official site, you can also get a look at the music player, photo, video, and browser applications. The text is in Japanese, but we have the utmost confidence that you'll be able to interpret the icons for each.

Ken Levine and the team at Irrational Games are switching things up forBioShock Infinite -- instead of being based on the Objectivist society of Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Infinite is aiming for more of an Erik Larson's Devil in the White City feel, with a focus on physics rather than gene splicing. Irrational is also switching up some of the most recognizable gameplay from the first two BioShock games, namely the ability to beat them almost entirely with the shotgun and Electro Bolt, Levine told PlayStation.Blog.
"One of the first things we did when we started on BioShock Infinite was to draw a graph with y and z axes, and to say that one of those axes was the number of enemies in an encounter and the other was the range of those enemies," Levine said. "In the original BioShock, the entire game lived in one corner of that graph – few enemies, all at close range - so the Electro Bolt and shotgun were perfect. BioShock Infinite is going to have much greater ranges and, potentially, far more enemies, so we're greatly increasing the spectrum of encounters that are possible, and that requires the player use a broader set of tools." That sounds like a challenge if we've ever heard one. You're on, Levine. You're on.

Sure, a 1000 percent increase in players for DC Universe Online sounds big, but you know what sounds really big? A million new players, which is how many have signed up since the MMO went free-to-play earlier this month. According to Sony Online Entertainment, the number of new signups is evenly split among the PC and PS3 versions of the game.
In short, it turns out that making your product free is a pretty big incentive for consumers. But asking them to stop by is different than having them stick around.

Worried your PlayStation Vita is going to be so full of repurchased PSP content that you won't be be able to store it all? Yeah, neither are we -- but if you want another place to keep your Vita's picture, video, music and game content, Sony says your PC and PS3 will do nicely. An application page on the JapanesePlayStation website details a Vita app that lets users transfer data between the three platforms, noting that content can be purchased on the PC or PS3, and then transferred to the Vita for use later. Gamers looking to save scratch on that not-so-optional memory card will be able to use this content sharing feature to get the most out of whatever size storage they can afford. Sure, 4GB of storage the cheapestVita memory card offers isn't ideal, but at least Sony is throwing you a bone to make it work.

Hundreds of players will have found themselves hit with bans from Battlefield 3 this week for cheating.
Developer DICE has said via Twitter: "This week we've banned hundreds of offending accounts and have stats-wiped accounts for exploiting (such as boosting)..."Players have apparently found a glitch that allows them to use the Engineer repair tool or the EOD Bot to garner tens of thousands of points in a match.
In the last few minutes DICE has called players' help to catch the culprits. "To report players cheating or boosting send us a direct message to this Twitter with a screen shot of the Battle Log Report," it asks.
EA and Sony also recently confirmed that there is a Battlelog problem with the digital version of Battlefield 3 downloadable via the PlayStation Store, and an update is in the making.

via http://www.scummvm.org/news/20111111/
It has been over 10 years. We are here thanks to the work of 131 developers. 49,124 commits were made just to the ScummVM tree and those turned into a massive 1,085,714 lines of code (excluding comments) and of course over 7.6 million downloads from the main site alone. I would say those were a great ten years.
The outcome is ScummVM 1.4.0 which we are releasing today, 11/11/11 11:11:11.11.
More games are supported: Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos <SMALL>(based on the same engine as Kyrandia)</SMALL>, the kids' game Blue's Birthday Adventure, and the science fiction game Ringworld: Revenge of the Patriarch. On top of that, practically all supported Sierra SCI games now have their Amiga versions working. Our musically inclined users will notice PC speaker support in Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, CMS support in Loom, The Secret of Monkey Island and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, fixed MIDI in the DOS versions of the Elvira series, and even sound in Winnie the Pooh in the Hundred Acre Wood!
As always, there are many more new features; you can find the full list in our release notes and the release itself on our downloads page.
Enjoy!
1.4.0 Release binaries
For a list of changes since the previous version, read the release notes.
1.4.0 is also apt-get'able from Debian unstable (sid).

Together as one, and leaving behind a smaller memory footprint is plum's Spoofer version 0.7.1. "Spoofer" is a plugin consolidating both the features of Davee's Unlimited Character Version and Mac Address Spoofer and Total_Noob's DayViewer.
The Unlimited Character Version and Mac Address Spoofer lets you change the "MAC Address" string and other strings found under [System Settings] > [System Information]. It's useful for hiding your MAC address when making videos ... if that matters or not. It doesn't actually spoof the packets sent across your network ... I don't think. And DayViewer lets you format the XMB date & time string to whatever format you want -- you're no longer limited to the 3 default formats (YYYY/MM/DD or DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY).
Note: You'll probably want to pass the "ReadMe.txt" through Google Translate or some similar translation service -- it's in Japanese.

Adobe Flash continues to lose support among popular electronics manufacturers, as Sony has also decided to move on without Adobe Flash initially with the PlayStation Vita portable gaming device, due in the US during the first quarter of 2012. The Vita is the successor to the PlayStation Portable (PSP), which was released in 2005. As Frank Cifaldi from Gamasutra points out in his article, the PSP also lacked support for Flash initially.
There will be no initial support for Flash on the PlayStation Vita's browser.
Steve Jobs fully understood that Adobe never updated Flash to work properly on mobile devices, and his decision to exclude Flash content on iOS is a clear testament to his Thoughts on Flash.
As Adobe continues to ignore the needs of the ever-increasing demand for delivering mobile content, even Microsoft seems to have plans to pull the plug on Flash with upcoming Internet Explorer version 10 (currently available for test drive with Windows 7 and newer). This new version of IE is designed to work with the Metro UI of Windows 8 and in many ways mimics Lion's approach of integrating the feel and look of a mobile OS into a full-fledged home and business operating system, while streamlining it by removing all of the unnecessary bloat and plug-ins.
You can't fault Microsoft for trying to stay with the current trends and attempting to come up with an answer to iOS, but it still has a long uphill battle in recapturing a piece of the mobile OS community (after stagnating with Windows Mobile) in order to reap the same benefits Apple has received with the constant evolution and sleek integration of iOS.
Apple, Sony, and Microsoft have made their point clear with their business decisions to become less and less dependent on Flash. As such, one may wonder how much time Flash has left. Are some of these decisions rumblings of the beginning of the end for Flash and the start to a new era where all content is delivered via HTML5?
PowerPC Mac Owners Rejoice!
For PowerPC Mac owners, these developments are a blessing in disguise. Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and later have support for HTML5 in several browsers such as Firefox 3.5 and 3.6, TenFourFox (current version is equivalent to Firefox 7), Opera 10, and Safari (version 4.0 and later). Unfortunately, when Flash 10.2 was released in February 2011 (the current version as of this writing is 11.0), PowerPC support was dropped, and many of the same Macs that can display HTML5 content will not display the exact same content delivered in Flash. This is especially frustrating for G5 owners who definitely have enough CPU and GPU processing power to handle streaming 480p and most 720p video content delivered in HTML5.
As HTML5 content grows and as Flash support declines, I would expect a brief resurgence where web content delivered exclusively in Flash 10.2 and later that is not being displayed on PowerPC machines will become widely available in HTML5 - until HTML6 arrives and becomes standard (possibly requiring more modern hardware) that could leave these machines behind again.
At the very least, though, when Flash goes away, if you own a PowerPC Mac and begin to worry how much practical life (on the Web) your machine still had with Flash eliminating support with version 10.2 and later, fret not. As Adobe gets the tables turned on them and as Flash loses relevancy, expect your PowerPC machines to benefit (at least for a little while) in a revival of capabilities when it comes to receiving streaming web content

Why not change things up a bit every time your PSP boots or VSH is reset... All you have to do is install and activate Y.K's Wallpaper Changer, fill up your memory stick with background images, and now it's a different experience each time, every time. WallpaperChanger randomly switches up the XMB background from the jpegs found in ms0:/PICTURE/Wallpaper.
WallpaperChanger is compatible with PSP-1000/2000/3000 and Go models. It's also compatible with firmware 6.00 up to and including 6.60. See readme.txt for more info.

The developer released a PKG CrashSerious One called for launching any disk Ps1
One can boot all discs, even those reported as non-functional (eg SLUS-01104 NFS: Porsche Unleashed). Running on 3.41 and 3.55, its use is very simple. Install PKG, One and start with a CD in the drive. If you do not have a CD in the drive, a return to the XMB will. It is no competition CrashSerious has not been functional with Multiman, but for the sake of freedom for the user.

The site Ps3DevWiki continues his research on the True Blue and gives us today the payload.
This new dongle allows for recall reading backups 3.6 and higher disk drive and Blu-Ray burned, but it has an access control to ensure its presence in the custom firmware 3.55 otherwise the special features are disabled. The secret of this dongle is the use of debug eboot, it would not be a big step forward and could be countered easily. The payload of the True Blue has yet to be decrypted before it is used on USB dongles ( Teensy example, E3 Card Reader, PS3Key). Whitezilla Thanks for the information. Homepage: http://ps3devwiki.com

Good ol' gaming bundles can be enticing when you're on the prowl for a new console or accessory set, and we have to admit, we'd be excited to lay some motion-controlled moves down with Sony's latest PlayStation offerings. Back at E3, we had a chance to slice enemies with virtual swords in Medieval Heros: Deadmunds Quest, thanks to the PS Move's 1:1 tracking abilities. With the game releasing next week, Sony's decided to offer it in a $100 bundle, packing a PS Eye, Move controller and a copy of Sports Champions (which Deadmund shares its gameplay mechanics with). If you don't already own a PS3 -- and love getting your groove on -- the Everybody Dance bundle may be your $300 ticket to the wand-waving fun; it features a 320GB PS3 Slim, PS Eye and Move controller, along with a DualShock 3 for when Duty Calls. These likely won't be Sony's last PlayStation-related bundles to hit shelves before the year's through, but if it sounds like your kind of party you'll find more info at the source link below.

While playing Battlefield 3, have you ever been killed by what appears to be a magical floating light, perhaps some omnipotent deity? Chances are you were actually gunned down by someone using a very powerful flashlight attachment, known simply as the "tactical light." We knew DICE was planning to reduce the light's effectiveness, but now DICE core gameplay designer Alan Kertz hastweeted some screens to illustrate the changes, which you can see above.
Speaking on Don't Revive Me Bro podcast (9:25), Kertz explained that the change is the result of "direct community feedback." It seems that many players find the godlight to be "negatively affecting their gameplay experience" and, thus far, the response to the images has been "overwhelmingly positive." We'll have to take him at his word because, frankly, our retinas are still adjusting.http://www.joystiq.com/2011/11/14/dice-plans-to-fix-battlefield-3s-magic-tactical-light/

The PlayStation Blog unveiled the seven exclusive supercars offered in the PS3 version of Need for Speed: The Run. EA already informed us at E3 that the Bugatti Veyron would be one of the fancy cars you'd get out of and walk. The other six include the Lexus LFA, Porsche Carrera GT, Hennessey Venom GT, GUMPERT apollo s, Lamborghini Countach QV5000, and the Koenigsegg Agera R.
The exotic (i.e. weird-sounding) quality of those names underscores their rarity and outrageous expense. Be careful not to scratch the paint!

Sony has launched its PlayStation Suite SDK beta in the UK, US and Japan.
The developer trial of its new software will allow PlayStation developers to port content across Android based devices such as Sony’s own tablets, its Xperia Play smartphones, and the upcoming handheld PlayStation Vita.
The tech is part of a wider Sony initiative to find opportunities within the thriving tablet and social games space, which otherwise proven to be a threat to the established games hardware business.
Further on, the SDK will support PlayStation 3, and perhaps non-Sony devices based on Android. No dates have been revealed beyond the limited beta.
Earlier this month, SCE chairman Kaz Hirai said PlayStation Suite “isn't an ecosystem where we want to keep everything within the Sony family”.

PCSX2 SVN r4967 is released.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r4966
GSdx: Added a simple workaround for the 32-bit z problem talked about in the
comments of r4956. Since sprites are flat and there was an unused vertex member
(t.w), I just decided to pass the raw uint32 value in that to the scanline
drawing function. It does not fix triangles and other primitive types, of
course. The ideal solution would be to break z into two parts (like 8:24 bits,
and only care about the upper part when not zero), interpolate separately and
rejoin when needed, it is just too hard to add another variable when the
assembly code is already so tightly optimized to use every register.
(HW mode z-test expects a float input, so this trick cannot be done there.)
r4967
GSdx: Just remembered triangles were occasionally converted to sprites, need to

SCE Korea has confirmed that it will be blocking access to the PlayStation Network for users under the age of 16 every night between midnight an 6am.
Microsoft is to implement a similar measure on Xbox Live, too.
Originally it was thought that games consoles would not be affected by new South Korean laws aiming to curb online games addiction, Kotaku reports, but this is now not the case.
In addition, from this Friday (November 18th) those aged under 16 will not be able to register a new PSN account.
Platform holders have complained about the short timeframe which they have been given to implement the new measures. Indeed, Sony has yet to confirm exactly how it will go about handling the situation.
The move will also hit Xbox Live, though Sony’s machine enjoys a far broader user base in the territory. Apparently Microsoft is considering simply shutting down its entire XBL network in the region for all users every night.

The "wizards" of Harry Potter would rather speak to one another by turning themselves into fireplace embers than using a phone, and they invented newspapers with moving pictures in them instead of learning how a TV works. We're pretty sure that Voldemort would run shrieking from a PlayStation 3.
But you know how to wield a PS3's magic, so you can take advantage of this powerful Muggle artifact. Starting this week, you'll be able to buy a special PS3 bundle containing a 160GB PS3, a Blu-Ray of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in both 2D and 3D, and download vouchers for the first twoHarry Potter movies. You'll also get 30 days of PlayStation Plus, meaning that some of the items in the PlayStation Store will suddenly be cheaper for you, as if by magic.

In the future, machines will be the least of our worries -- it's the humans with advanced machines in their bodies we'll have to watch out for. Advanced chips, to be exact, will unlock seemingly limitless potential in human beings. This is the world of Syndicate.
Governments of tomorrow will play second fiddle to massive corporations, and the game's four-player co-op mode focuses on exactly that. It's sort of a quasi-espionage affair: your team is sent in to various locales in order to steal advanced technology. It's just, uh, not very sneaky.

Sony has announced more details about the beta for the PlayStation Suite. That's the development program (similar to Apple's App Store or Microsoft's Xbox Live Indie Games) which will allow third-party video game developers to produce games that can be released, with Sony's approval, on to the PS Vita and other Sony and Android devices. The beta itself will be launched in "late November," with an SDK available to select developers then, and Sony will refine and clean up the program for a public release at a later unannounced date.
At launch, Sony says the PS Suite content will be available on PlayStation certified devices only, including the PS Vita, and the Xperia line of mobile phones and Sony's upcoming "Sony Tablet" models S and P. Sony specifically mentions that the devices listed are currently only available in the Japanese market, and while it's probably true that we'll eventually see PS Suite content on the North American Xperia Play smartphone (and the Sony tablets, if and when they're released here), that's not yet confirmed.
It's still very early in the process -- it will likely be a while before we see any third-party content up and running (much less available to buy) on these devices.

PlayStation 3 RPG Atelier Meruru: The Apprentice of Arland gets a European release in Spring 2012, publisher Nippon Ichi Software has announced. The 13th game in the Atelier series, it's a sequel to 2010's Atelier Rorona: The Alchemist of Arland and this year's Atelier Totori: The Adventurer of Arland. The game, developed by Gust, follows Princess Meruru as she attempts to use the power of alchemy to strengthen her kingdom.Expect classic turn-based battles, a dynamic development system that changes the game's outcome depending on how you use it and returning characters from past entries in the series.Atelier Rorona scored a middling 6/10 from Eurogamer's Chris Schilling in October last year."Like labelmate Trinity Universe, Atelier Rorona is a hard game to dislike, but it ultimately feels a little too tied to JRPG convention for its ideas to bear fruit," read his review."It might be admirable for a game to promote such a diligent work ethic, but it never quite rewards you handsomely enough for your efforts."

A recent survey by analysts Cowen and Company shows that casual gamers have abandoned traditional handheld devices, with only 26 per cent playing on a Nintendo DS, 3DS or a Sony PSP.
"Over the last five years, the penetration of dedicated handheld platforms into survey respondents self-identifying as casual gamers has declined by 29 per cent, with the vast majority of that decline occurring in the last two years," states the report.
"We believe cellphone and smartphone gaming is significantly impacting demand for dedicated handheld devices."
Only 37 per cent of those surveyed played games on a dedicated handheld device, while 52 per cent played on their phone.
"We do not view the decline of casual handheld gaming as a particular problem for the US publishers, as they have migrated their exposure away from dedicated handheld platforms, and in some cases (particularly EA) have invested significantly in phone and tablet platform game development."
"However, we do view this trend as a negative one for Sony and especially Nintendo."
The full report also suggested while consoles were holding up well against more casual gaming models, "there is a substantial gap between the average prices that our respondents were willing to pay and prevailing hardware retail price points." It suggests a price cut would help to boost sales and the console market.

The growth of the digital games market may typically be seen as the biggest threat to retail, but is the cramped Q4 release schedule in reality a bigger burden?
Speaking to investors following its Q3 financial report yesterday, GameStop president Tony Bartel highlighted the major role the chain has played in encouraging adoption of Activision’s digital service Call of Duty: Elite.
"In the case of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, we worked closely with Activision, Sony and Microsoft to pre-order and deliver nearly 600,000 instances of the Modern Warfare Elite DLC to date," he said, as reported by Gamasutra.
"This places the launch of Elite as one of our top ten launches of the year so far. We've found that consumer demand for downloadable content is very strong at the point of launch.
“Based on our research we know that one half of the DLC we sell is to customers that have never purchased DLC before."
Yesterday GameStop revealed that it’s digital sales were up 59 per cent year-on-year for the three months ending October.
What’s less positive for the retailer, however, was the perceived loss of sales at the expense of the hectic Q4 release schedule. A successful Q4 release can sell more in the key pre-Christmas period than it could possibly hope for at any other time. But the tsunami of releases comes at a price – a high number of games become commercial flops.
"The quarter presented some challenges in topline, due to a cash-strapped consumer that could not afford all of the good titles released during the quarter," GameStop CEO Paul Raines observed.
Bartel added: "We had expectations for strong sales due to the great title line-up and record reservations. But we found that consumers were unable to fund the products that they wanted, as these strong titles rolled out week after week."

Though this may not be a surprise worthy of even a single exclamation point, it's welcome news to fans of cardboard camouflage, fateful fistfights, and delicious, convenient Calorie Mates.
There's going to be a Metal Gear Solid 5. And, despite his constant efforts to extricate himself from the series, Hideo Kojima is going to be in charge of it -- though it's currently unclear whether that will be in a higher-level production capacity or as director.
The news comes out of the latest Official PlayStation Magazine UK, which finds a place for Hideo right on the cover. In the issue, Kojima discusses Metal Gear Solid Rising, his plans for this newly announced (but highly expected) sequel, and a new project called "Project Ogre." Whatever it is, we're sure it's not a newSnatcher game.

Developer Just Add Water has finished work on the PS3 HD update ofOddworld: Stranger's Wrath ... now it just needs to figure out a release date. The company says a release date should be announced "soon," and passed along a list of updates it made from the original 2005 Xbox title.
The list is pretty extensive, but some highlights include: updates to all 84 character models (including the live ammo), general environmental upgrades like reflective water, enhanced audio, and everything runs at 720P at 60FPS in widescreen.
For those willing to wait for a portable version of the update, Just Add Water announced in June that Stranger's Wrath and Oddworld: Munch's Oddyseewould mosey on over to the PlayStation Vita, complete with cross-platform cloud save functionality.

Five years may be a long time for most gadgets and consumer electronics, but you could argue that's just when video game consoles really hit their prime. Reaching that mark today is the Sony PlayStation 3, which made its North American debut on November 17th, 2006 (a week after its launch in Japan). In those five years it's helped Blu-ray win a format war, introduced gamers to some new, now-familiar characters like Sackboy and Nathan Drake, and delved into the realms of 3D and motion-control -- dropping quite a bit from its original $500 starting price along the way. Of course, it has also seen more than its share of hiccups. Sony's collecting some thoughts from game developers on its blog to mark the occasion, and you're naturally welcome to share your own in the comments below.

With yesterday's PlayStation Network maintenance over, Sony's reduced game sharing policy has come into effect.Previously, games bought from the PlayStation Store could be shared between five consoles. This has been reduced to two, spread across the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable devices.PS3 users are able to play a game on up to two activated PS3 systems. PSP users will be able to play a game on up to two activated PSP systems.Games bought prior to yesterday's maintenance are unaffected.

Large save files are reportedly causing game-breaking framerate drops in the PlayStation 3 version of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
News of stuttering framerates affecting the PS3 version of the game first broke earlier this week, and it now appears the problem only begins once game saves top 5MB in size.
Official PlayStation Magazine sought comment from Bethesda, who said: "All we can reiterate at this stage is what Pete Hines has said on his Twitter feed."
Hines, VP of PR and marketing, told players earlier this week to"calm down" and be patient while Bethesda worked on patches for all platforms. On Xbox 360, there are texture scaling issues, while PC players are experiencing freezes of several seconds during outdoor sections.
Bethesda announced that it had shipped seven million copies of Skyrim to retailers in its first week on sale, with more than half of that figure sold in the first 48 hours.

Grand Theft Auto developer Rockstar has suggested that a sequel to 2006 hit Bully (or Canis Canem Edit as it was rebranded in the UK) could still come to fruition.
In fact, that studio considered beginning work on the project before eventually deciding to get the ball rolling on Max Payne 3 instead.
"We knew that we didn't want to start doing the Bully sequel instantly,” Rockstar’s vice president Dan Houser told Gamasutra. “Even though it is a property that, like Max, we adore and might come back to in the future. There was just no impetus to do that then. "
"So we said [to Max Payne 3 and Bully developers Rockstar Vancouver] 'You can do Max, and then we will see what we can do with Bully'. So it was really waiting for the slot to open up and the group to open up to at least start work on it."
It may have been five years and counting since the game was first released, but Rockstar being Rockstar the wait could well prove to be several years longer.
"Basically we have been meaning to start [Max Payne 3] for a while, but we have limited bandwidth and limited studios, and more games to make than we've started,” Houser added.
"Also, contrary to a lot of people, we like to take a little bit of time at the end of a game before starting a sequel, so we can wait for the excitement or disappointment and everything else of the experience to shake down and really see what we should do in the next game.”

Sony's recently redesignedPlayStation Home project has always been about bringing online social experiences to the PS3 that mirror their real-world counterparts: hanging out in your apartment with friends, window shopping at the mall, Quincying. Now it can add one more notch to its virtual world experience belt by offering the ability to view full length movies for free, streamed by Sony's Crackle network. If you're a frequent user of Xbox Live's Netflix Movie Parties this may sound like old hat (were we the only ones using that feature?), but now all PS Home users -- in North America -- can do social viewing with up to 60 users or private parties with up to 11 at a time. Crackle's selection of movies and TV shows are available today, while live broadcast UStream events (Engadget podcast party anyone?) and musical stations provided by RadioIO are scheduled to debut in December. Press play on the video above for a quick preview or check after the break for a celebratory press release.

EA is being taken to court for failing to keep its promise that the PlayStation 3 version of Battlefield 3 would include a free copy of Battlefield 1943.As reported by Kotaku, US law firm Edelson McGuire filed a class action suit against EA today on behalf of disgruntled PS3 owners. The suit isn't focusing on the fact that EA went back on its promise, but that it was announced after the game had gone on sale and even then only via Twitter, meaning many customers were unaware of the fact.It alleges that EA "misled and profited from thousands of their customers by making a promise that they could not, and never intended, to keep."According to the lawyers, all that those signed up to the class action want out of EA is the free copy of 1943 that they were originally promised. We've approached EA for comment and will update if we hear back.

Infinity Ward has been on a mass-banning spree as numerous glitches are being found and exploited by cheaters in Modern Warfare 3.
Upwards of 1,600 players have been banned so far and we expect many more to come.Posting on Twitter, IW's community man Robert Bowling said: "Any attempt to cheat, hack, or glitch in #MW3 will not be tolerated. 1600+ bans issued. Updates in works. Please cont. to report offenders."
He later added: "We are doing mass bans on PC as well while we work on updates," and has repeatedly promised a "Hot fix already in the works" for multiple glitches reported by agitated Twitter users.
Despite its issues, Modern Warfare 3 has broken movie box office, book and game sales records for five day worldwide sell-through in dollars.

Got your grain of salt ready? Good! Survey and statistical analysis firm Cowen and Company has published the results of a survey that suggests "casual" gamer interest in dedicated handheld gaming systems has declined by 29 percent over the last 5 years. 37 percent of people polled play games on a dedicated device, while 52 percent primarily use their phones. The study goes on to say that companies like EA, who have invested heavily in iOS and Android gaming, are better positioned for the future of the market as compared to other companies such as Nintendo.
Now, these are "self-identified" casual gamers, mind you, and knowing what that means in practical terms or how it affects the results of this survey is an impossibility. It's also no big shocker that the Great Smartphone Boom of the early 21st century has had an impact on dedicated devices of all kinds, from gaming systems to navigation units to carrier pigeons.
Seriously, our carrier pigeon side-business is really, really tanking. This may not have been the smartest investment we could have made.

November 20th, 2011, 23:59 Posted By: wraggster
A few weeks ago, we started a quick poll on /talk, to know what portable devices people in our community would be interested to buy next…
New World Order
The results are clear: 52% of the people who voted plan to buy a PS Vita as their next handheld. Android (tablets + phones) comes second with 25% of the votes, and iOS is in third position with 8% of the votes. I won’t claim these results are statistically meaningful, or that I can analyze them precisely, but here are a few things to take into account. First of all, our community was almost 100% PSP focused less than a year ago, so it is not surprising that we’re seeing lots of people with more interest in Sony products than the average. Nevertheless, I was expecting less success from the upcoming Vita in our community, given how strongly we had reacted after the whole “Sony VS hackers” debacle. I guess 6 months is enough for most people to forgive Sony, and forget that they do the same thing every single time.
The first PSP has been relatively successful, selling more than 70 million units so far. This needs to be compared to 149 million units for the Nintendo DS, and 250 million units for iOS devices (iPod, iPhone, iPad). iOS and Android are of course the “new” competitors to the mobile game market, that need to be taken in to account. This sounds obvious today, but it was definitely not when Apple started introducing gaming on their devices. In 2007, gamers were laughing at the idea that people could ever play on a mobile phone (we still had the N-Gage in mind). In 2008, people started mentioning that phones would have better graphic chips than the PSP. There were still strong claims that the PSP or the DS could never be replaced, but phone gaming was beginning to be taken seriously. Today, my android phone has a 1GhZ chip, a much better screen than the PSP, has hardware 3D acceleration, and smartphone gaming represents a bigger market than dedicated mobile handhelds. Sony claimed the PSP would live 10 years, but let’s be honest, it’s been only 6 years so far, and the hardware is clearly obsolete, Sony is emptying their stocks in prevision for the Vita.
Long story short, the landscape considerably changed for Sony and Nintendo, so much actually that they are now the ones who need to prove they can survive in the handheld industry against iOS/Android, not the other way around.
In a world ruled by finance, this can be easily seen by the stock trends of the four companies behind our beloved handhelds (don’t get these graphs wrong though, they are for entire companies, not for the gaming or mobile sections. As far as I know, Playstation is doing much better than overall Sony).
Sony’s Assets
Nintendo is focusing on gaming with the 3DS, trying to milk their franchises (Super Mario, Zelda, etc…) to the last drop, including game micro transactions, and the possibility to buy and play old games from their store. With the competition of casual gaming on mobile phones, but also facebook and other “in browser games”, I personally think Nintendo will have a very hard time growing from now on. They might stay a good gaming company, but they don’t have any infrastructure to let their market become bigger. A console manufacturer without any money will not grow a large audience, and will not make money, therefore will make less games, etc… The 3DS seems to be overall a failure in sales (although Nintendo seems to think they will sell more 3DS in its first year than they did for the NDS), so I don’t foresee a bright year for Nintendo.
Then again it might be clever from Nintendo to focus on gaming, and I’m famous for being super bad at forecasting companies’ health. Sony is taking a very different approach, they’ve been trying for a few years to compete against Internet giants such as Amazon, Google, or Apple. And they have lots of assets that could make them successful. After all, they own Sony music, Sony Pictures Entertainment, have a fairly well installed hardware base (TVs, mobile devices,…). Overall, they’re probably making way much more money than their competitors.
Repeating the errors of the past?
Until now however, it seems to me they have failed at making a viable ecosystem with all these assets. And I don’t have to be clever about this: again, based on the stock trends, people who have money don’t seem to trust Sony’s ability to win the cloud wars. The PSP completely missed that. It had internet access, but it took too long for the PSN store to have interesting content, QRiocity was introduced too late in the game, etc…
And this is only one facet of Sony’s failure to predict the market. Historically, Sony has been doing great on the Japanese market (this year too, the PSVita preorders got sold out in less than 24 hours), but not so great outside. They’ve been trying to reproduce the success of the Walkman for the past 30 years, without much results. the MiniDisc was a failure, 100 times more SD Cards are sold than memory sticks, the UMD is born dead. The only major format success from Sony in the past 15 years is the Blu-Ray, but it’s also a doomed format, in an era where most people already moved to streaming and non-physical video formats. The PSVita is no exception, with yet again another format of cards that will be forgotten by everybody in 5 years. Overall, it’s a shame for Sony that despite actually owning the content (sony music, sony pictures) they failed over the years in the markets of mp3 players, of mobile gaming, of digital music/video distribution, of ebook readers against Amazon, Apple and Google. Even their protected field, the hardcore-gamer console, is being seriously endangered by Microsoft. And it’s been the same mistakes over and over for years.
Hopefully for Sony, except for the proprietary memory card bit, the PSVita might not repeat all the same mistakes, and Sony will definitely try to leverage their existing services. People buying a PSVita will have access to much more interesting online services than there used to be for the PSP. Sony is also probably taking the right approach with the Playstation suite, which will allow to play some of their games on non Sony devices. About the Vita itself, I’m still not entirely convinced. It seems to offer a great value as a game device, but from my experience, people who have money tend to buy a “classical” console (such as the PS3 or an Xbox360) for their gaming needs, and a smartphone (which now offer good casual games) for their mobility needs.
It is already established that the Vita’s hardware will be great, but history proved us that it’s not what people are really after in this market. I think two factors will determine the success of the Vita: the amount of exclusive games (I unfortunately expect, once again, Sony to focus on Japan for this, and progressively forget about their US/EU clients… the PS Vita will be released 3 months late outside of Japan), and how much money people spend on “additional” services (music, movies, whatever the Vita has to offer). The question is then, will people be willing to subscribe to Qriocity, etc… when competitors in the cloud have better offers? Either way, based on our poll, it seems the community at /talk will be quickly migrating from the PSP to the Vita, and of course we’ll be here to investigate the “less official” uses of the console (come on, how many of us already dream of running Android on the Vita?)

The PSVita is not officially released yet, but hackers are already actively looking into it. Developer SKFU, known for his long term involvement in the PS3 scene, just released a tool called PSVita Firmware extractor.
The tool allegedly allows to extract PS Vita firmware version 00.945.040, directly from a PC, which raises a few questions: aren’t these firmwares supposed to be encrypted? Does the tool decrypt the files, or just extract them (encrypted) from the archive? Where do people get access to this firmware (most likely through connections within official PSVita devs)
By comparison, our beloved PSARDumper needed to run on a PSP with Kernel access in order to decrypt the firmware, so I am assuming this will not decrypt files, but I might be completely wrong.
This tool will obviously be useful only to a handful of devs, people who have access to the Vita Firmware (official devs only for now?) and are interested in the hack side of the force… But it surely is an interesting piece of news, especially since the console is not out yet!

Representing "Block Dude" is cmbeke with his latest development effort... Ported from the original TI-83/4 calculator game is the classic that you've likely seen or played elsewhere; if you're a longtime reader then you may even recall SG57's version back in '08. This one however differs graphically (and behind the scenes, code-wise).
cmbeke's version is written in Lua using seanpaul223's qOOP -- it includes all 11 original levels and uses the same passwords to jump levels. Use the d-pad to move left/right; press up to climb and down to lift/drop boxes; press the right trigger to restart a level and circle to return to the main menu.
There you have it! Enjoy.

Did y'all know this? I mean it's obvious and stares you right in the face, but I hadn't realized it until now... Sony changed up the WiFi LED on firmware 6.20 and later; on said firmwares, when an active WiFi connection is established, the LED remains a solid green -- no blinking at all, leaving you unsure if data is actually being transferred over the interface. Prior to 6.20 things were different, the WiFi LED would blink green when there is activity, which I like better. This plugin, written by yuh0q223, returns you to the pre-6.20 WiFi-blinking-LED days.

As far as tablets go, Sony's Tablet S is about as innovative and unorthodox as it got in 2011. The Honeycomb-based device shipped with Android 3.1, and while there's no word yet on an Ice Cream Sandwich update, you can bet that Sony's pushing for one. As is, it's still in possession of quite the edge given the PlayStation Suite inclusion, which makes it the first tablet capable of playing PlayStation and PSP games via the included emulator. We found plenty of pros and cons during our time with the device, but now that it's out and about in plenty of nations worldwide, we're offering you -- the early adopter -- a chance to speak about your gripes and praises. Would you change up the wedge design? Throw a different display on here? Swap one thing for another? Go on and shout your advice below. But try speaking, first. Shouting is pretty rude.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has named Vodafone as its preferred partner for the PS Vita's 3G feature.
"With social gaming and connectivity at the heart of PlayStation Vita it is important that we partner with a market leading network provider, to ensure users have a high quality 3G experience," said SCEE CEO Jim Ryan.
"Partnering with Vodafone will enable PS Vita users in the selected countries to always be connected with their PlayStation life, friends and games, wherever they are."
The handheld device is due to launch on February 22.
"We want our customers to have the best choice of devices and PlayStation Vita is a great addition to our range," said Patrick Chomet, Vodafone's Group Terminals Director.
"We know from our application downloads that games are hugely popular with our customers, so we're delighted to be SCEE's preferred connectivity partner for 3G Vita devices sold across Europe and other selected regional markets."
The partnership will extend across a number of territories, UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand and The Netherlands, and via SFR in France.
"Using the device over Vodafone's high-performance network with extensive 3G reach and market leading download speeds brings a reliable 'anywhere anytime' dimension to gaming."

Darkvolt the Spanish forum claims to have deciphered the Elotrolado Metldr.
To recall the metldr is located high in the security chain, decrypt open until at least the ps3 version 3.73 and is said to be irrevocable. Darkvolt would have arrived there with the feat of Mathieulh. Below the Darkvolt say: We have a metldr decrypted, it is seen as a normal elf with no header. It contains the root key of Geohot and pairs of 0x30 added to version 3.50 and still used today. Having metldr in the elf we can put it in the header and upload it in anergistic and use it to extract the self loaders. The metldr is still used in the 3.74 (a debug any) and the 3.73 retail. The metldr not be changed so that means we can have the keys for each firmware. A new fake or good news for the PS3 scene, more answers soon . Thanks to the green-to information. When you're making the obligatory "things I'm thankful for" speech around the table this Thanksgiving, you may silently include Sony among the honorees. From tomorrow through November 28, the publisher is holding a Fall Sale on PSN that drops some recent releases into temptingly affordable territory.
Limbo will be $10.49 (just $7.34 for PS Plus members) during the sale; the lovelyOutland is down to $6.99 ($4.89 for Plus); and Might & Magic Clash of Heroes HD drops to just $10.49 ($7.34 for Plus). High-definition goatee news now, with Naughty Dog sharing further details on the disc-bound Jak and Daxter Collection, set to hit PlayStation 3 in February 2012. Most remastered trilogies can match the features boasted by this one, such as 720p resolution, Trophies and stereoscopic 3D support, but none can claim to have this kind of titular escalation. You get Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (subtitle), Jak II (Roman numerals) and Jak 3 (plain ol' numbered sequel).
Remastering duties on the Jak and Daxter Collection fall to Mass Media, a company that survived a stint and closure under THQ, where it ported the Full Spectrum Warrior games to PlayStation 2. According to Naughty Dog co-president Evan Well, Mass Media is "working closely with our team at Naughty Dog.
A brief reminder of the games being assembled here can be found in the trailer above. We're also reminded to institute a law preventing anyone from writing "duo" if it's preceded -- as always -- by "dynamic."

Blizzard has never committed to a console project as it is, now, with Diablo 3 - the days of out-sourced and eventually scrapped last-gen project StarCraft Ghost should be forgotten."People don't believe us when we say we're going to make a console game - flat out," Diablo 3 director Jay Wilson told Game Informer magazine (reported by VG247)."I understand why they don't believe us," he said, "because we've tried this before."We've also never invested in it to the degree that we are doing now, and we've never had a product we felt was appropriate for it."Despite Wilson's candid remarks, Diablo 3 on console hasn't officially been announced - although the developer has been not-so-secretly building a console development team for it."We are still in active exploring mode," explained Wilson. "We haven't officially announced a product.

More than one million players paid for the new Call of Duty Elite service in six days of launch, according to Activision.
Launched on November 8, more than four million players have registered for the service, despite overwhelming demand which has crippled online servers and support.
Premium memberships for the service cost $49.99 and allow players access to all features such as downloadable content, maps, competitions and virtual items.
"The demand for Call of Duty Elite at launch was so overwhelming, that for the first several days, the service did not perform up to our or our fans standards," commented Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "I want to personally thank our fans for their patience.
"Our teams have been working around the clock to get the service scaled up to meet demand. I'm very pleased to announce today that the service is now performing stably and anyone who wants to try Call of Duty Elite is now able to do so.
"Due to the scaling challenges we encountered at launch, we are giving all Call of Duty Elite premium Founder members an additional 30 days of the service free of charge."
Activision noted that while Elite hit one million paid members in six days, comparable premium subscription services from Netflix and Xbox Live took approximately one year to reach a similar milestone.
More than 80,000 Call of Duty Elite clans have been created and over 100,000 user-generated videos have been uploaded to the service, which is seeing three million daily logins.

PlayStation Vita will launch in Europe next February with 11 firstparty games, including two newly announced titles, Zipper Interactive’s Unit 13 and Evolution Studios’ MotorStorm RC.
They will be joined by a selection of thirdparty offerings, providing what Michael Denny, SVP Worldwide Studios Europe, labelled “one of the best launch line-ups of any games console ever”.
Unit 13 and MotorStorm RC were unveiled at a preview event held in London today. In development at SOCOM and MAG maker Zipper, Unit 13 is a class-based thirdperson military shooter featuring contemporary mission scenarios that promises to offer “a true, dual-analogue experience”. It will focus on portable play, “with bite-sized gameplay and a non-linear mission structure that will allow players to jump in at any time, without having to keep up with a story or previous events”.
MotorStorm RC is described as “a unique blend of old-school and contemporary racing gameplay… with social interaction at the fore”. Players will be able to build a garage of vehicles, with 24 initially available to unlock and planned DLC packs set to add more, alongside new tracks.
Sony also reiterated that Vita will be the first games console to utilise Wide Area Augmented Reality (WAAR) technology. In contrast to single-card AR, WAAR uses up to six cards and allows for a much larger gameplay area. Six augmented reality cards will be available for Vita at launch with free games to download from the PlayStation Store.
Confirmed SCEE PS Vita launch titles:
Escape Plan
Everybody’s Golf
Hustle Kings
Little Deviants
ModNation Racers: Road Trip
MotorStorm RC
Reality Fighters
Top Darts
Uncharted: Golden Abyss
Unit 13
Wipeout 2048
Earlier this week, Sony announced a partnership with Vodafone that will see the mobile operator become the preferred 3G provider for Vita, with those that connect through Vodafone receiving a free download of Wipeout 2048.

After the poor reception of SOCOM 4, and some subsequent post-release downsizing, Redmond-based Zipper Interactive is setting its sights a little smaller for its next outing. And by smaller, we mean PlayStation Vita-sized. Unit 13 isn't the thirteenth title in some entirely unknown and impossibly long-running edutainment series; instead, it's the name of Zipper's dual analog-powered portable shooter.
"Fast action, on-the-go gameplay was a key goal for the Unit 13 team," Zipper president Brian Soderberg writes on PlayStation Blog. "Missions come in a variety of sizes and difficulty. Some are smaller bite-sized battles; others are longer, more challenging, multi-objective missions that are a good test for any skilled shooter fan."
Bite-sized gameplay isn't the only thing Zipper adopted from the world of mobile games; the Vita's WiFi and 3G functionality keep "players up to date on leaderboard positions, new 'Daily Challenge' content, new unlocks, shared High Value Target missions, and challenges from friends as they move past you on the leaderboards."
Unit 13 even features co-op with accompanying voice chat, playing into the Vita's console/portable hybrid approach. Perhaps a tad more worrisome: "it's available right around Vita launch," Soderberg says, and this is the first we're hearing of it. We're trying to stay positive here.

Motorstorm RC has players control little radio controlled cars in fast off-road races."We're extremely pleased with how the game is coming together; it's a perfect combination of classic racing with really modern connectivity features and it's already bigger than your average download game," says game director Paul Rustchynsky.
The game packs eight vehicle classes and the usual variety of tricky environments the series is known for, along with online play and the ability to carry over saved progress between the PS3 and the Vita versions.
It promises four locations containing 16 all new tracks, four-player split-screen play on PS3, and what's really cool is you'll only need to buy the game once and you'll get both the PS3 and Vita versions.
Motorstorm RC has been confirmed as a launch title for Vita's February 22 EU launch.

November 23rd, 2011, 23:51 Posted By: wraggster
Labour party MP and chairman of the home affairs select committee Keith Vaz has called on Parliament to express "deep concern" atCall Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3's depiction of a terrorist attack on London.
Vaz, a frequent critic of violent videogames, also calls for UK ratings board the British Board Of Film Classification (BBFC) to more strictly control the sale of violent games.
Early day motion 2427, titled Call Of Duty 3, calls on parliament to agree that "this House is deeply concerned about the recently released videogame Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, in which players engage in gratuitous acts of violence against members of the public, [and] notes in particular the harrowing scenes in which a London Underground train is bombed by terrorists, bearing a remarkable resemblance to the tragic events of July 7, 2005.
"[The House] further notes that there is increasing evidence of a link between perpetrators of violent crime and violent videogame users, and calls on the BBFC to take further precautions when allowing a game to be sold."
This is far from the first time Vaz has spoken out against videogames. He campaigned against Rockstar's Manhunt following the murder of 14-year-old Stefan Pakeerah, and also criticisedanother of the developer's games, Bully, its UK PS2 release later renamed Canis Canem Edit. Last year, he filed another early day motion in which he attempted to link the Malmo school shootings to Valve's online shooter Counter-Strike.
Vaz clearly hasn't played or even seen the level in question, judging by the factual inaccuracies in his motion. Players do not attack members of the public; the terrorist attack is a series of chemical explosions above ground; and in the scene on the Tube, players engage with terrorists in an empty underground train, armed with explosives and bound for Westminster station.
Hats off, then, to Tom Watson, deputy chair of the Labour Party, who yesterday filed an amendment suggesting that Vaz's motion be reworded from "House" - the third word - onwards, as follows:
"…notes that the BBFC gave the videogame Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 an 18 classification, noting that 'the game neither draws upon nor resembles real terrorist attacks on the Underground'; further believes that the game has an excellent user interface and challenges the gamers' dexterity as well as collaborative skills in an outline setting; and encourages the BBFC to uphold the opinion of the public that whilst the content of videogames may be unsettling or upsetting to some, adults should be free to choose their own entertainment in the absence of legal issues or material which raises a risk of harm."

In August, EA brass restructured the company putting Peter Moore in the role of COO and converting the illustrious BioWare brand from developer to "label," joining the ranks of EA Games (DICE, Visceral, Criterion, EA Partners, etc.), EA Sports (Madden, FIFA, Fight Night) and EA Play (Maxis, The Sims, MySims). With this new understanding of "BioWare" we bring you the latest scuttlebutt from internet scuttlebutter Superannuation, who spotted a LinkedIn resume (since edited) that described the Marina del Rey-based Victory Games as a BioWare studio.
Victory Games, you might recall, is a new "strategy studio" announced by EA last February, as an offshoot of its EA Los Angeles location. Like Danger Close and Visceral Games, Victory is more of a "rebranding" than an entirely new studio; Victory was set up as the EALA shop handling all things Command & Conquer, much like Danger Close was established to handle all things Medal of Honor.
Now, onto the new "BioWare" game being revealed on December 10 at the Spike Video Game Awards. With the latest teaser promising "a new direction, a new game, from a new BioWare studio," that sounds vague enough to contain a new Command & Conquer installment. New direction? That sounds like Victory's mandate for the franchise. New game? Well, yeah. A new BioWare studio? We're not sure what makes Victory a BioWare studio (per the above LinkedIn resume) instead of an EA Games studio, but there you have it. We'll find out on the 10th!

Ridge Racer on PlayStation Vita will contain just three tracks, all pulled from previous games, and five cars.
That's according to reports from a recent Namco Bandai press event in Japan (via Andriasang).
The three tracks in the game, Harborline 765, Highland Cliffs and Southbay Docks, are said to be unchanged from their previous appearances. The ability to play them in reverse doesn't really suffice, we say.
Namco is, however, pricing the game slightly lower than other Vita games. While Uncharted: Golden Abyss will be priced at 5,980 yen (£50) in retail, RR will come at 3,980 (about £33). Likewise, the download version of RR will be cheap, selling at a special price of 2,980 (£24) until March 31, when it's price will rise to match the retail copy.
Does its bare-bones content warrant the price? What about the fact that it apparently only runs at 30fps, rather than the 60fps you might expect? Still getting it now?As huge Ridge Racer fans, we find this hugely disappointing. Three courses was minimal back in the original Ridge Racer Revolution days, but at least back then it was a technical marvel.

But claims 'unfinished business' on current generation platform
It would be “undesirable” for the Playstation 4 to launch later than its rivals, Playstation Europe boss Jim Ryan has said.
The PS3 launched a year after the Xbox 360, and whilst the system has been successful, Ryan admits Sony does not want to give Microsoft another head start with the next generation.
"I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition,” Ryan told Eurogamer.
Despite this, few details have been given on the progress of the Playstation 4, whilst the Wii U has already been revealed and touted for a 2012 launch and the next Xbox is expected to be announced next year.
Ryan stated however there is a lot of “unfinished business” on the current platform.

Jim Ryan, president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has argued while media focus might be turning the the unannounced next generation of consoles, Sony is still commited to the PS3.
"There's still a lot of unfinished business on PS3," he toldEurogamer in an exclusive interview.
"If you look at PlayStation 2, now in excess of 150m units installed globally, a huge majority of that was done at price points of £120 or lower. [With PS3] we've only just hit £199 in the UK, so clearly there's a considerable untapped part of the market there."
At the launch of the current generation Microsoft had a considerable head start, launching the Xbox 360 in November 2005, a full year before the PlayStation 3. Ryan said Sony are to avoid making that mistake again.
"I think we would consider it undesirable to be significantly later than the competition."
Eariler this week Sony announced the EU launch line up for its new handheld, the PlayStation Vita.

Reports have emerged which claim Sony will at some stage release a firmware update for PS3 that will allow the upcoming PlayStation Vita to stream any game from the system.
Eurogamer reports that for back-catalogue titles Vita will only be able to display a resolution of 480x272, though this will be upscaled to fit Vita’s 960x544 OLED screen.
Future titles, however, titles will have the option of including 480p playback.
Games that utilise buttons found on a Dualshock 3 pad but not on the Vita will be capable of adding these missing functions as on-screen buttons.
It is presumed that a wi-fi connection will be required to use the functionality, and n owner’s PS3 will have to be set up to allow for users to activate the console remotely.

Catherine, the game that can be described feebly as a romantic nightmare puzzle sim type thing, is heading to Europe in February 2012. Deep Silver is taking care of Atlus' curious cargo over there, and announced the release window today alongside a double-sided cover for first-edition copies.
The flip cover shows Catherine, a mysterious and illicit temptation for the protagonist. Reverse it and you'll find Katherine, his long-term girlfriend that's making a move toward marriage. "This way consumers will get the opportunity to select their personal preference," Deep Silver says, "as to which of the women in his life the game's main character, Vincent, should choose." If your game cases are proudly displayed in the living room, we suggest you go with the K-lady.

UK PlayStation 3 owners can now download episodes of US TV shows such as Arrested Development, Bones, South Park and 24 from the PlayStation Network Video Store.Pricing has been set at £2.49 an episode for HD shows, with SD content a pound cheaper.Totalled up, that means a standard US 22 episode season will cost £54.78.TheSixthAxis points out that the available content is far from comprehensive however - you can watch seasons one and six of 24 but will have to go elsewhere for the rest. Likewise, you can download the second season of Avengers director Joss Whedon's Dollhouse, but not the first.

The UK website of US giant GameStop.co.uk is kicking off a day of ‘Black Friday’ deals tomorrow, beginning with Uncharted 3 for just £22.97.
MCV can reveal that the PS3 game will be lowered to that price at 8am tomorrow (Friday, November 25th) and will be available at that price until 8pm OR until stock runs out.
GameStop will announce a new deal every hour throughout the day going right up until 8pm.
Black Friday is a US day of sales that follows the Thanks Giving holiday. But it has started to make its way to the UK. Amazon.co.uk has been running a Black Friday week of deals following a successful debut last year. Games involved in its sale has included My Fitness Coach, Splinter Cell Collection, Saints Row: The Third and Driver: San Francisco.
GAME has also been running a ‘deal a day’ all week, selling titles released this year for as low as £4.99.

The chances of Sony’s PS3 ready 3D games monitor arriving in the UK this side of Christmas have effectively been ruled out.
The unit was first announced at this year’s E3 in June.
"We have been informed by our supplier that there will be a delay in obtaining stock for this item and it will no longer be released in Europe in 2011," Amazon’s listing for the device now reads.
"If you have ordered this item from us at Amazon.co.uk your order will take longer to fulfill than originally estimated. We are expecting an update in the new year."
The retailer expects to sell the TV for £499. That includes the 24” screen and two pairs of active shutter glasses. One of its key features is the ability for two viewers to watch different 2D content on a single screen at the same time.
Sony had best get a move on – after all, chief executive Howard Stringer reckons that 3D TVs will be in every home by the end of 2012.

November 25th, 2011, 23:38 Posted By: wraggster
This has been a tough year for traditional games handhelds.
3DS has taken its time to find its feet, with Super Mario 3D Land last week the first game to make it a must-have. Six months after release. The new kiddie-priced PSP effectively snuck out to market as that platform faces its twilight years. Meanwhile, the popularity of iOS devices and rival smartphones – and even stuff like Kindle – have grown and grown, blurring the lines and creating confusion about how best to price, deploy and promote pocket-sized content.
In that environment, is there hope for PlayStation’s Vita? I certainly think there is.
Because while much has been made about how the delivery of content has changed, the big problem facing any kind of portable device that plays games is content itself. 3DS simply hasn’t had enough, and the PSP eventually ran out of games. Meanwhile, the new and sexy smartphones are awash with games. Yes, there are lots of impressive hits, but floods and floods of trashy apps, too.
Sony’s answer this week, in unveiling 11 – count ‘em! – first-party launch games, is a move to balance both quality and quantity. Classic brands and new IP. Upcoming exclusives such as FIFA and Call of Duty add further promise.
Retailers will find this a huge relief when it comes to launch on February 22nd – they need content to sell, and as GAME CEO Ian Shepherd says elsewhere in this issue, stores want it outside of the usual Q4 season.
Vita, as its name suggests, could keep this part of the market alive.
A SORRY TAIL
But as GAME said to investors last week (and MCV this week), there’s an awkward story this side of Christmas.
Games are coming out and hitting the high notes at week one, and then dropping off in sales terms at an alarming rate by week two. It’s such a problem GAME singled it out in its trading alert last week.
This is no ‘not our fault’ excuse – anyone who checks Chart-Track numbers can see it happening. There are a number of titles that have arrived at full price only to be bargain bin material a few weeks later.
Is it driven by over-enthusiastic shipping forecasts at the top of the chain, or unchecked expectations at local levels?
Publishers and retailers need to address this. Because putting a brave face on it, and selling in or taking on loads of stock won’t help consumers’ faith. They’ll expect high prices day one, and lower ones a few weeks later. More and more are waiting. And they might not come back at all.

November 25th, 2011, 23:56 Posted By: wraggster
Around this time last year, Sony announced it had shipped just over 4 million units of its motion gaming peripheral, the PlayStation Move. And then in early April, about five months later, the company once again announced a new shipping number of around 8 million, doubling the original shipped number. Unfortunately for Sony, it seems the last seven months haven't maintained that momentum, with 1 million being added to the total shipped number (approximately 9 million in total), according to Industry Gamers.
As per usual, Sony isn't giving out hard numbers for units actually sold. It stands to reason, however, that if retailers have only ordered another 1 million units leading up to the holiday season, the peripheral likely isn't selling like, say, Walter White's crystal meth (hotcakes are so out of fashion).
Microsoft has been spinning a similar story with its own motion peripheral, the Kinect, holding to sales statements made last March (10 million sold -- not shipped) rather than offering new data. We're holding out hope that the two hardware companies are more vocal after the coming holiday sales bonanza, but we're not holding our breath either.

Skyrim's world is immense, and that've before you consider it's many in-game books which can be found in the world.
These books usually require a good deal of rummaging around in people's houses and in every nook and cranny of the enormous game to find them, but if you enjoy the game's texts you can take a shortcut and download them all here.
Website Capane has gathered every last one and slapped them into MOBI and EPUB files for use on Kindle or Nook and other E-readers. That's called commitment.
A YouTube user recently created a fun video showcasing 100 weird and wonderful ways to die in Skyrim. Well worth a watch

A few days ago, developer SKFU released a tool which “extracts” the PSVita firmware. He updated it today, adding some validation of the input file, and a Linux version. Those of us who have access to the Vita pre-release firmware can grab the tool here, while others like me are stuck with their hex editor and their decompiler, trying to understand what this tool does. I had a quick look in the internals of SKFU’s tool, and found some bits of information. The result is a bit disappointing, to be honest. Not than SKFU claimed it was anything else, but the tool is basically a hardcoded list of file names and offsets. It takes a random input file, and splits it into predefined chunks. Running version 1.00 of the tool on a random video file, I ended up with a few dozen files.
Especially (and as expected), the tool is not doing any kind of decryption… But we’ll take what we get for now, especially since the device is not released yet. So, here is the list of hardcoded files that the tool extracts:
fwfeatures.xml version.txt binary1.self binary2.self sce.wm sce1.pack sce2.pak sce3.pak sce4.pak sce5.pak sce6.pak sce7.pak sce8.pak sce9.pak sce10.pak sce11.pak sce12.pak sce13.pak sce14.pak sce15.pak sce16.pak sce17.pak sce18.pak sce19.pak sce20.pak sce21.pak sce22.pak sce23.pak sce24.pak sce25.pak sce26.pak
So, well… some config files, some binaries (updater?) and a bunch of resource files… nothing too exciting for now, I guess :/

November 27th, 2011, 23:53 Posted By: wraggster
A few days ago, Sony started a closed Beta test of their Playstation Suite SDK, a tool allowing to create games for the PS Vita and Android. Registration is open to everybody, including (especially?) homebrew devs.
Those of you who have been following my blog for a while know that I’m in the whole “hacking” stuff for one simple reason: my mind refuses to understand that some great hardware is crippled by bad business decisions. In the case of the PSP, that device had everything to become the best platform for emulators and indie apps, but Sony locked the PSP, and made sure indie devs couldn’t join the fun with a prohibitive entry price (dev kits cost 1500$ initially, and you had to prove you were a respectable company, sign an NDA, before being able to get access).
History, helped by Apple and Google, proved that locking indie devs out of their ecosystem was one of Sony’s biggest mistakes in the past years. They tried to fix it with the Playstation Minis, but it was too late.
Xperia Play, the PS Vita, as well as their new series of tablets bring Sony an opportunity to right this. Sony is now trying to solve the issue of device fragmentation (Android devs know too well about this issue) with a system called the Playstation Suite, which is more or less a virtual machine that will enable developers to create a game once, and run it on several platforms (for now, the PS Vita, Sony’s Android tablets, and the Xperia play, but depending on success, other non-Sony Android tablets/phones, and maybe the PS3, might join the fun).
We’ve heard of the Playstation suite before, but a “recent” (I’m kinda late on this one) technical presentation in October gave lots of details on what it’s going to be. The presentation explains it in details, but the things that got my attention are:
•No painful joining process. Homebrew/indie developers as well as companies are welcome, no NDA
•Small entry fee (not announced)
•Open forums for code discussion and sharing
•PC emulator to test the code
•No need to sign the content in order to test it (this one is fishy…does it mean we can distribute our content outside of the Sony store if we feel like it, just like on Android?)
•C#, running in a Mono virtual machine
So, it looks like Sony is finally trying to embrace the homebrew community here, by providing something that will be close to what google Market or the Apple AppStore have for devs. Yet it’s Sony, I can’t help but feel that there will be too much restrictions one way or another… and with their past, it’s difficult to trust Sony when they say “we love indie devs”. What do you guys think?
Nevertheless, this sounds like a wise move, the Vita will be only one device among others, but Sony can leverage their existing game library on many devices, and it could be that the paystation suite will become their strongest asset in the mobile market.
For those of you who are interested, a closed beta has started a few days ago. Anybody can register, but not everybody will be accepted. To me, if Sony does things correctly, they could become “again” one of the major actors of mobile gaming.

After two sleepless nights and great help of iQD and PS3-690, finally the PS VITA .pkg xTractor application 1.00 is finished.
This program can decrypt & extract PS VITA game package (.pkg) files.
To use the program you need to place the PS VITA .pkg AES key in the same dir as the executable.
Funny as SONY is, they probably were to lazy to think of a new key and just used *hehe*, the PSP .pkg AES key.
Information tab not finished, yet. It will be completed in next version.
So just put the PSP .pkg AES key in hex syntax in aes.key file in the same folder and you are ready to go.
Download: CLICK
Another thing worth to mention is that thanks to GregoryRasputin the PS VITA developer wiki is now online.
For now it's near empty but I hope it will fill fast: http://www.vitadevwiki.com/

Professor plum and his solution for managing plugins (prx modules) in real-time, and by that I mean actually enabling/disabling plugins without multiple reboots (read: no rebooting at all), has just hit version 4. Now the change log is poorly translated from Japanese to English by way of Google Translate, so really I have no idea what's new; however, plum has also included the source code this time 'round, meaning if you're a developer you can see exactly how plum has accomplished this feat.
plum's Plugin Manager for PSP Custom Firmware -- enable/disable plugins in realtime, without rebooting. Source code included.
v4 CHANGELOG (TRANSLATED)

GameStop has released US pricing information for PlayStation Vita memory cards.
A 4GB card will cost $29.99, 8GB will cost $44.99, 16GB will cost $69.99, and 32GB will cost $119.99.
By comparison, Gamestop sells 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 32 GB memory cards for the PSP at $18.99, $37.99, $50.99, and $125 respectively.

The PlayStation Vita launches worldwide on February 22, 2012. There will be a Wi-Fi model and a more expensive 3G-enabled model available, priced at £229 and £279 in the UK, €249 and €299 in Europe, and $249 and $299 in the US.
The UK launch line-up includes Motorstorm RC, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, WipEout 2048, ModNation, Racers: Road Trip and Everybody's Golf. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and FourSquare will also be available at launch.

The eventual fate of both the PlayStation Vita and the handheld console sector remains to be seen, but if the consumer appetite in Hong Kong is anything to go by, Sony has nothing to worry about.
A report on Engadget China, as translated by Joystiq, says that the opening of pre-orders for the new device was met with somewhat of a frenzy.
Huge queues formed outside key stores that were taking pre-orders form the device, with the military quarantine of some retail districts allegedly considered at one point.
And online interest was so high that the websites of several retailers were crashed.
There’s no denying the monstrous tech included in Sony’s machine, but the extent to which consumers remain hungry for dedicated portable games machine is very much in question.
An audience at The London Games Conference earlier this month was told by analyst Nicholas Lovell thathandheld consoles are doomed – a statement 82 per cent of those listening agreed with.

If you think Drake's marksmanship went awry between Uncharted 2 andUncharted 3, you'll be pleased to hear Patch 1.02 is now available, bringing alternate aiming options to the single-player game. Naughty Dog concocted these changes with the aid of its community, which has been vocal about several reticule-ous issues since Uncharted 3 launched.
Patch 1.02 also makes several granular changes to the multiplayer gameplay and interface, and implements the cutscene viewer -- a perfect companion if the story was all a blur to you. Of course, if you prefer things all a-blur, you'll welcome the return of the game's previously "missing" motion blur effects.

There's no more confusion about whether or not the PS Vita will run PSOne Classics and other "Game Archives" games (that's the umbrella term used in Japan for Sony's retro games -- PSOne and PC Engine/Turbografx-16, along with, presumably, PS2) at launch. Unfortunately, the answer to that lingering question is a firm, and bewildering, no.
The Japanese Vita FAQ, which initially noted that the Vita will play all downloadable PSP games except for Archives releases, cemented that in ananswer to the direct question of whether or not the device will support old downoaded games. According to the FAQ, Game Archives games will not be compatible with the device at launch. "Plans for future measures will be announced shortly," the (Google-translated) FAQ notes.
There's no reason to suspect that there's a technical issue with running old PlayStation, PC Engine, and PS2 games on the powerful Vita. It's more likely that Sony's figuring out how to square the existing PlayStation Store for consoles with the PlayStation Suite version of the store, which offers a different and smaller selection of PSOne games. That hasn't been a problem so far ... because there hasn't been a device that could theoretically use both stores yet.

If Square Enix was to remake RPG classic Final Fantasy 7 it might not be able to resist the temptation to make significant changes to the original game, according to veteran franchise producer Yoshinori Kitase.Speaking in an interview with OXM, Kitase explained that it wouldn't be very interesting to just do a straight remake."If I may speak as a game creator, if we were to produce a remake of 7, for example, I would be really tempted to delete things and add new elements, new systems or whatever because if we were to make exactly the same thing now, it'd be like a repeat," he said."It'd be an issue of repetition and not as much fun to make such a game. So I'd be really interested in rearranging games or reshaping games into something slightly different even though it's supposed to be the same game."However, he conceded that such an approach might not be too popular with certain sections of the franchise's fanbase."If we did that, the fans might be disappointed or [say] 'this is not what I was expecting' so in that sense maybe some might say that it's better to let memory be memory."When we play the games we made years ago, sometimes we think 'oh, that is not really cool' or 'that probably should have been a bit better than that' and that sort of thing," he continued."But on the other hand, those slightly negative features and bits, for some of the really enthusiastic fans of these titles, that gives the game extra flavour or personality or whatever. So maybe they would rather we didn't do anything about it and we just leave it in as it is. It's very difficult to decide what we should we keep in and what we should take out."Square hasn't confirmed any plans for a fresh take on the 1997 PS1 classic. However, a new version of Final Fantasy 10 is in the works for PlayStation 3 and Vita.

Images of Sony's rumoured Smash Bros. rival have emerged.New studio SuperBot Entertainment was last week linked to the development of what is reportedly codenamed Title Fight, a fighting game to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment America for PlayStation 3. Images of their game, which leaked over the weekend, have added further evidence to this claim. One image shows Sweet Tooth from the Twisted Metal. Another makes reference to Kratos from God of War."Our capture station and waiting area - Parappa [the Rappa] is a permanent resident," reads the Twitter page - now deleted - of the game's senior level designer Chris Molina. Then, "Slam! Second level design pitch approved by our studio leads! Now onto Sony Santa Monica for a final green light."And, in reference to Sony's eye-catching "Michael" advertisement, "New Sony Playstation commercial vaguely foreshadowing our soon to be announced title.""Checking out the original art assets from a Sony IP title we're appropriating for my level - very cool seeing this environment in raw form."The Paul Gale Network, which first revealed the game, reports that Sweet Tooth is "one of the heavier fighters". The leaked image is of him in his normal, "human" playable form. "And not pictured is his Level 3 Bar Super Move, in which as previously mentioned, involves him becoming his Ice Cream Truck Mech".Last week Sony told Eurogamer "we do not comment on rumour or speculation" when quizzed about the game. The Paul Gale Network claims Title Fight features a number of Sony mascots, including Sly Cooper, Nathan Drake (Uncharted), Colonel Mael Radec (Killzone) and Fat Princess. There is, apparently, a Sandover Village stage (from Jak & Daxter), Hot Shots Golf characters in stage backgrounds, a LittleBigPlanet stage and a Buzz! trivia mini-game. A James Bond character is also mentioned.James Bond may make an appearance because, according to The Paul Gale Network, of "Sony's involvement in the new Bond film and the fact that it'd almost coincide with this game's release (and quite possibly God of War 4 as well)".SuperBot Entertainment is confirmed to be working on a "very amazing PS3 game" for Sony Computer Entertainment America.SuperBot's website describes the company as "an exclusive developer of Sony Computer Entertainment America" and reveals it is "currently in production of a yet-to-be announced PS3 title".

While Sony confirmed that the PS Vita will be able to dive into the PSP's back-catalog from launch, it looks like it'll miss out on anything pre-millennium. An updated page from the PS Vita's Japanese site has backed up rumors that PSOne Classics and other "archive games" won't be available when the quad-core console arrives in Asian stores next month. However, it's not all bad news for anyone hoping to relive those jaggy-edged gaming triumphs of the late 90's -- the official response adds that plans for older titles will be announced in due course.

The free-to-view PlayStation Access TV show is a success. The weekly programme from Future Publishing has amassed over 14,500 Facebook fans since it launched and has become the most popular free download on the PlayStation Network.
Episode one of PlayStation Access TV went live in late September after Future’s paid-for show FirstPlay was axed in July. The latter charged users to download episodes whereas Access TV is free.
The show takes its name from a series of PlayStation Access community events.
SCE UK senior product manager Ian Vinten told MCV: “PlayStation Access is an opportunity for us to reward gamers with trials of titles before release, invitations to exclusive events and an array of awesome prizes.
"We’ve been working on Access TV with Future Publishing as a way of highlighting everything that’s happening in the world of PlayStation that week. It provides an awesome platform for us to showcase what Access has been up to, the latest and greatest games on the console as well as raising awareness of what’s available on PSN.
“Feedback to the show has been very positive and gamers have liked the distinctly local take on their gaming world.”

It's still going to be a little while before "real" news shakes out, but some details were recently revealed in Famitsu (via Andriasang) about one of Square Enix's upcoming Unreal Engine games. The project will be an original (meaning not Final Fantasy nor Dragon Quest) action RPG under the direction of Ryutaro Ichimura (Dragon Quest 8 and 9).
Ichimura told Famitsu that the game's staff traveled for two years and conducted user surveys to research art and gameplay direction. With the basic concept complete, the team is now looking to grow beyond the staff of 35 and begin production.

The official Battlefield 3 Twitter account this morning announced plans to launch the PlayStation 3 iteration of its latest title update (dubbed a "client update") for BF3 tomorrow. Additionally, it seems that the Xbox 360 will be getting the same update in the near future, as the post on Battlelog states it'll "follow shortly" after tomorrow's PS3 update. PC players already got the update last week, which improves a variety of issues with the game across campaign and multiplayer.
Like with the PC update, the patch notes don't indicate that the the tactical lighthas been altered, but plenty of other major issues have. For instance, now, if you're holding a SOFLAM (which is, of course, so fly), and an enemy tries running you over, you'll totally live. After the patch? No more! We've listed the menagerie of fixes and tweaks after the break, wherein you can preemptively decide whether or not the patch will "totally break the game."

Sony will give fans the opportunity to check out the PlayStation Vita well in advance of launch, with events it's calling "Vita Social Clubs." The first, "Vita Hill Social Club," will be held in San Francisco this Thursday, December 1, offering "dozens and dozens" of Vita systems with demos of Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet,Little Deviants, WipEout 2048, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Reality Fighters, and Hot Shots Golf. Defending your spot in line for a demo is kind of a social activity!
Refreshments will be provided, and Sony also plans to raffle a Vita system and other prizes. RSVP here if you want to go. Following this inaugural Social Club get-together, Sony is planning additional events at unspecified locations throughout the country in January. Barring that, you can see a Vita at one of the locations in Sony's five-mall "tour."

Whereas Sony might have confused some consumers with its PSP sales pitch, the platform holder reckons customers should have no problem figuring out what the Vita is for - namely, playing video games.Speaking in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, SCEE CEO Jim Ryan conceded that it had sent out mixed messages when it launched the PSP - that it was a general entertainment system rather a core gaming platform."I think with PSP we tried to position it as a rather broad multimedia device," he explained."We talked a lot in the early days of PSP about its video playback functionality, its use as a music device and a host of other multimedia functionality that it had."I think this time we've realised that perhaps ended up confusing consumers, and they weren't quite sure what the device was really all about. So this time the Vita does all of that stuff that we talked about on PSP, and it does it a lot better."We've been a lot more single minded and much more focused in our positioning of Vita," he continued. "We're saying that this is primarily a gaming device. It has been developed from the ground up as a gaming device. What it does best is play games."Not long now before we get to see how that approach pans out. The Vita launches in Japan next month, before arriving in Europe on 22nd February.

PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan has revealed that Sony is planning to offer multiple price-points for Vita software to combat the growing threat of cheap smartphone games to its handheld business.
While the company has yet to confirm details ahead of the console's European launch next February, Ryan toldGamesIndustry.biz: "I think it would be safe to assume we will take a more tailored approach than perhaps we've done in the past."
Speaking in London last week following confirmation of the first-party launch titles in Europe, Ryan admitted it would be "foolish and naïve to ignore what's happening" in the smartphone sector.
"It's our challenge to ensure that the gaming experience that we provide is closer to that TV console experience than it is to your 69p thing that you've downloaded on your iPhone," he added.
If we provide great value on games like Uncharted, I think the possibility to sustain historic console price points is there
Jim Ryan, Sony Europe
"If we do that and we provide great value to the consumer on games like Uncharted, I think the possibility to sustain historic console type price points is there."
One launch title that may be priced lower than premium is the newly-announced MotorStorm RC from Evolution Studios, coming to Vita and PlayStation 3 as a digital download, with cross-platform functionality.
Evolution group game director Matt Southern said: "We've not announced the price yet, but we have announced that for one price you'll get both versions". Later last week, during a panel discussion at Develop Liverpool, Southern added that the studio was in dialogue with Sony over pricing, hinting that a lower-than-premium point was preferred.
Further seeking to differentiate Vita from its smartphone rivals, Ryan said: "Absolutely it does do other things, but it has been designed as a gaming device, and a perfectly logical consequence of that is that the gaming experiences you can have on Vita are superior to what is possible on a device that has other functionality at its heart."
Elsewhere, Ryan admitted that predicting the relative popularity of the 3G and wi-fi only models of Vita was something "we agonise over endlessly internally". However, he said Sony expected the wi-fi model would "just shave it" in numbers.
"But the truth be told, we just don't know," he continued. "This is one area where we're going to have to be very nimble internally and if consumer preference skews one way or another we will adjust very rapidly to meet what the true underlying consumer demand is."

Bethesda's latest patch for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim contains a bug that breaks resistance - and has caused some dragons to break with tradition by flying backwards.
Resistances are enchantments that reduce the damage the player takes from certain attacks. Players have found that not only are their enchantments having no effect on the damage they take after installing the patch, but it applies to every NPC, creature and enemy in the game.
It's embarrassing stuff for Bethesda, which has been working on patches to fix technical issues present in all versions of the game since its launch earlier this month. The Xbox 360 version hadtexture scaling problems; PS3 players experienced severe framerate drops when their save files exceeded 5MB in size; andPC players complained of freezes of several seconds in outdoor areas.
So inundated was Bethesda with complaints from gamers demanding fixes that the publisher's VP of PR and marketing, Pete Hines, took to Twitter to tell players: "Patches/updates take a little time. We can't turn it around quite that fast. It's been three days.Calm down, we're working on it."
While the speed at which Bethesda has issued fixes - the latest patch coming just 19 days after launch, far quicker than the platform holders' certification processes typically allow - is commendable, it's deeply disappointing that such an obvious error wasn't picked up before the patch was submitted.
Players can choose not to install the update when prompted, but will be signed out of Xbox Live or PSN as a result.

Why Sony chose to sit on this one, we have no idea, but the company just revealed that its software update for the 2011 lineup of Xperia phones -- which was released last month -- also adds browser support for WebGL. This means that if you're holding an Xperia Arc, Mini, Neo, Play, Ray... or any other of its most recent handsets, then there's a good chance you're wielding one of the first Android phones to support this modern graphics platform. Designed to bring advanced visuals and gaming to the web, the API holds roots in JavaScript and has been used to develop everything from Angry Birds to far-outmusic videos. Sony Ericsson first previewed its WebGL efforts back in February, and after all these months, its official arrival is a welcome one, indeed.
