The long-awaited announcement of the first next-generation console has rejuvenated investor interest in core video games.
That’s according to analyst Michael Pachter, who said in an investor note that the trend should grow stronger still once Microsoft finally unveils the successor to Xbox 360.
"There appears to be some light at the end of the long tunnel, with share prices for the game publishers beginning to rally after underperforming the market for most of the last three years,” he stated, as reported by GamesIndustry.
“Once Sony announced the PS4 in February, investor confidence returned somewhat, and share prices for Activision, EA and Take-Two have all risen for most of the year.
"We expect a similar impact from Microsoft's announcement of its next-generation console prior to E3. While there have been no announcements from Microsoft confirming even the existence of a next-generation console, we think that the company is likely to announce before E3 begins in June, with an announcement likely as early as this month.
“Once both next-generation consoles have been revealed, we expect further information on specifications, features and pricing to emerge at E3, beginning with Sony's and Microsoft's press conferences on June 10th."
Pachter admitted, however, that the next-gen consoles are unlikely to raise the graphics quality bar to the same extent that new hardware has done in the past, although other features should still prove sufficient to woo consumers.
“Many investors remain sceptical that these improvements do not allow for a dramatic improvement in graphical quality for next-generation games,” he added. “While we think this is more of a function of the current state of display technology, we tend to agree that next-generation games will not be significantly more visually stunning than current-generation games.
“However, we think that improvements in facial and voice recognition technology, and dramatic increases in memory may allow for 'smarter' game characters, who may react to and adapt to the style of game play.
"We expect consumers to be dazzled by the next-generation consoles, and think that rich multimedia functionality may be sufficient to induce most to consider upgrading. Ultimately, we think that software will drive the purchase decision for most consumers, and we expect a significant number of high-quality and high-profile games to launch for next-generation consoles in 2014."

Nvidia’s senior VP of content and technology has said that mobile devices will very shortly overtake the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of technological clout.
Speaking to Bit-Tech, Tony Tamasi said that the milestone will be achieved when Nvidia releases its next generation of mobile chips after it retires its current Tegra 4 builds.
For comparison, both PS3 and Xbox 360 possess around 200GFlops of graphical clout. Tegra 4 boats some 80GFlops while Nvidia’s latest PC GPU, the Titan, boasts around 4,500GFlops.
Indeed, even the PS4 only houses around 1,800GFlops, according to Bit-Tech’s article.
Of course, while it’s easy to build a smartphone or tablet that easily outperforms current consoles, the nature of handheld computing means that the tech is artificially held back but other constraints – chiefly battery power.

The PC release of standalone DayZ may still be some way off, but that hasn’t stopped creator Dean Hall hinting at a console release.
The DayZ Arma II mod enjoyed huge success last year, so much so that Arma devs Bohemia recruited the mod’s maker to produce an official standalone release. But having missed its 2012 release window, the SKU is still many months away.
However, such is the hunger for the game that it could even pave the way for an arrival on consoles, with PS4 looking a likely destination.
"Certainly I think if we don't, for want of a better word '**** up', the PC release then I would say a console port is almost certain," Hall told The Escapist.
"I know a lot of people get really hot and bothered about it. Like, I'm not a console gamer, I'm a PC gamer, but I don't think it necessarily has to hurt things.
"It appears to be the kind of game that Sony are interested in, I think we just have to wait and see. We've talked and met with Sony, and they're very – you know, they're obviously interested."
Hall added that as it stands DayZ is not in development on console.
Could this point to a possible console release for Bohemia’s Arma III, which is currently available in Alpha on Steam?

Sony appears to be planning bundled retail releases for various PSN games, according to an ESRB listing.
The listing (via Gamespot) unveils a “Best of Playstation Network Vol. 1” compilation on Blu-ray for Playstation 3; with titles including Sound Shapes, Tokyo Jungle, When Vikings Attack, and Fat Princess.
Two of the four digital titles are available on Vita with cross-buy, but it’s not mentioned whether the feature will be included as part of the retail release.
No official confirmation from Sony as of yet, let alone a release date or pricing info. However, the fact that the compilation is labeled volume one certainly suggests that other PSN retail bundles could be in the works as well.

The PlayStation 4 will be introduced globally in 2013, retailer GameStop’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development Michael Hogan has said.
The statement calms fears that the console will arrive in Europe in 2014.
“We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are,” Hogan said, speaking at a conference call with financial analysts.
Sony has a history of staggered launches for its PlayStation consoles. Historically, consoles arrived in Japan and North America first, with the European launch delayed by a few months.

At the Revision 2013 demoparty held last weekend, visitors and guests wanting to check out the latest advances in programming old video game consoles got a real treat. [Abyss] took a Playstation 2, connected the composite video out port to a TV and an oscilloscope, and created the first dual display PS2.
From the official video of the demo, the two video signals are generated from a single video out on the PS2. Generating the composite video out is understandably fairly easy, but the second display – an oscilloscope – is driven during the Vblank period in the composite signal. There’s no audio trickery here; video signals are used for video, and audio signals are used for audio.
[Abyss] took first place in the wild demo competition at Revision 2013. Understandably, too, because this is one of the best demos we’ve ever seen. You can check out the official video from [Abyss] after the break, and the wild competition video after the break.

Yannis Mallat "doesn't see the day" when annual sequels become a problem for hit franchise
Ubisoft
ubisoft.com
Ubisoft Montreal boss Yannis Mallat does not subscribe to the notion that annualised sequels for franchises like Assassin's Creed create player fatigue.
In an interview with Eurogamer, Mallat claimed that the only way to judge the validity of such a strategy is through player satisfaction, and in that respect Assassin's Creed seems to be heading in exactly the right direction.
"Right now there are more and more coming into the franchise, so I don't see that day," he said. "It's our breakthrough. When you have quality content, the frequency of coming out with the game is not an issue at all.
"On the contrary, people expect more and more of that content. So it's natural to be able to provide that content. The gamers are happy and it's our job to make them happy."
Assassin's Creed 3 has sold 12 million units to date, making it both the most successful game in the series and the biggest launch in Ubisoft's history. Importantly, it was also the series' fifth full console release, and the fourth in four years.
However, Mallat believes that the rate of production needn't have a negative impact on quality. Ubisoft has seven studios all over the world working on the franchise, giving the core teams on each instalment time to develop their ideas, and ensuring that the same staff don't work on consecutive projects.
"That's why every Assassin's Creed has one dedicated core team working more than one year on their projects," he said. "We call that a roadmap. It takes into account the creative content - the settings, the where and what - the technology and the team.
"What I described with the roadmap is we have several teams. So they are resting. The team that has delivered Assassin's Creed 3, they're not working on Black Flag. They're resting. They are refreshing their minds and then working on something else that is not announced."

GDC 2013: Crystal Dynamics reveals gulf between "actuals and expectations"
Square Enix
square-enix.com
Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider had the biggest week one sales in the history of the franchise, and the most successful launch of 2013 so far.
In a GDC session attended by Jostiq, Crystal Dynamics head Darrell Gallagher outlined Tomb Raider's success, even though Square Enix revealed the game failed to meet expectations just days earlier.
"It's been the biggest week one sales in franchise history, and we're only a few weeks into that launch right now, and it's been the biggest opening so far in 2013," said Gallagher. "So, we're happy with the outcome. It's certainly in a place where we feel like we're on the road to achieving everything we wanted to.
"Certainly we're proud of what we achieved, and I think for the most part, the whole organisation is happy with what we did... Actuals and expectations, I guess, are two slightly different things. What I'm telling you is the actuals, and they're communicating expectations."
In a document circulated among its investors, Square Enix showed that the 3.4 million units Tomb Raider sold last month was lower than the company required. The figures were released to prepare investors for the company's next financial report, which will include a fiscal year loss of around $138 million, much of it attached to significant restructuring costs.
The company's performance over the last financial year, in which Sleeping Dogs, Hitman and Tomb Raider all failed to meet their internal targets, prompted the resignation of long-time CEO and president Yoichi Wada.

The PS4 will likely be hard to find on the High Street when it eventually arrives (hopefully) later this year.
"Although we have been given no official numbers by Sony we do believe that demand will far outpace the supply of this product during the launch window," GameStop president Tony Bartel told investors, as reported by Cnet.
He added that nearly 900,000 consumers have signed up to the chain’s ‘First to Know’ PS4 email list – a number he believes reflects the likely strength of pre-orders for the machine.
GameStop’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development Michael Hogan recently claimed that the PS4 would be launching worldwide this year in every territory – and yes, that means Europe too.
Sony, however, has been less willing to commit to any specific timeframe, claiming in February that it was “too early to say” whether enough machines could be manufactured to meet the demand of a global launch.

In the annals of "clever patents that may never amount to anything," we now have an entry from Sony: a method of sensing touch strength with sound. Since capacitive touchscreens can't detect pressure on their own, a second film is needed that can add weight and cost. Sony's freshly granted patent claims that a microphone can take on that job instead by listening to the sound your finger or stylus makes when it hits the screen and deducing force from that. It could also be used with a camera-basedposition detection system as shown above, meaning your finger's location and force could be calculated on a non-active surface like an ordinary table. Obviously such a device would only detect taps, not presses, and Sony has claimed a calibration method that the average user may not want to bother with. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time of filing (2009) when other force-sensing options had yet to hit market, but this one seems unlikely to see daylight -- though, you never know.

Took a couple of months, but EPIX is finally ready to fulfill its promise of PlayStation 3 movie streaming today. The network's launching its app for the console, giving users access to some 3,000-plus titles including the likes of The Avengers, Skyfall and The Hunger Games, plus a slew of documentaries, concerts and such. The app itself is free, but requires a premium subscription to really do its job. In fact, if you're already a paid-up member of PlayStation Plus, you'll get a free movie or special every week. A more handheld version of the service is set to hit the Vita in "the coming weeks," according to the company.

An Epic Games exec has compared the PlayStation 4 to "a really perfect gaming PC," citing the console's combination of "phenomenal" hardware and convenient user experience. Speaking to CVG in a recent interview, VP Mark Rein called Sony's decision to incorporate off-the-shelf PC components in PS4 "very smart," because in his opinion it will allow many developers to hit the ground running with their next-gen game development. He also pointed to the memory limitations of the 32-bit versions of Windows as an example of how PS4 titles could even surpass what "most PCs" can do."I think it's a very smart move on Sony's behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it," he said."Let's not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 - that's not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that... we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that."The other exciting thing is that... when you think about Windows, even Windows for most people is tied to about 2GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows."It's like giving you the world's best PC," he added, pointing to Sony's introduction of "super convenient" features such as the ability to play games while they're downloading and perform background updates."The kind of stuff that they announced that they're doing, the level of convenience and things like that... they're making a really perfect gaming PC," he added."I've always said that the things in the next-generation that aren't just brute force hardware are all about the service and simplicity of the experience - the things that make it as fun and easy to get a PS4 game as it is to get a game on your iPad."Commenting on Microsoft's next-gen console plans, Rein said he was confident the Xbox firm will also be doing something 'along the lines' of PS4.

Steal Bas-tard, Curve Studios' fiendish puzzle-platformer, will be released on PS3 and Vita this summer, Sony has revealed. "Following your birth in a cloning lab, you find yourself trapped in a vast and overwhelming network of dastardly chambers, replete with vicious, yet hilarious, booby traps and deranged robots!," lead designer Sam Robinson explains on the PlayStation Blog."Your task is simple; stay out of sight and get to the exit. Persevere to the bitter end and you might just discover the secrets of this vicious world!"Its move to Sony's platforms will see the game renamed something less profane. The studio is giving fans and readers the opportunity to come up with a new moniker and submit their suggestions on the studio's official website.

The malignant majesty of Demon's Souls becomes free to North American PlayStation Plus members in today's PSN update. The servers for the From Software game are staying online for the foreseeable future, so there's no reason to pass on a PS3 game we described as a "leather-clad mistress" in our 2009 review - unless, perhaps... you're scared?
Less sadistic Plus entries coming this month include Zombie Tycoon 2, which heads to PS3 and Vita via PSN on April 30, Malicious and Labyrinth Legends for PS3, and PSP game Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for Vita. There are no PS Plus ETAs for those last three.
As ever, new stuff coming in pushes old stuff back out. If you want to grab Spec Ops: The Line from PS Plus, today's your last chance to do so. Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition dragon punches out on April 9, while Anomaly: Warzone Earthflees on April 16.
Finally, today's PSN update brings discounts to The Walking Dead, Rainbow Moon, and the Söldner-X series, including the first season of Telltale's zombified adventure for $14.99, a price that drops to $10.49 with Plus. For all those deals, check out the PlayStation Blog.

After some recent speculation surrounding a mural unveiling, Rockstar revealed the official box art for Grand Theft Auto 5 this morning. As you can see in full below the break, it does not stray far from the style introduced during the series' PlayStation 2 days.
The art unsurprisingly features the three main protagonists of the game, with Franklin holding the handgun at the bottom, Trevor holding the slightly larger weapon, and Michael taking to the water. Also typical to GTA's style, in the hands of the woman on the left we can see a rather familiar-looking device...
Grand Theft Auto 5 rides onto Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17.

PlayStation players in Japan can spruce up their console collection with a "Metallic Gray" variant of the DualShock 3 wireless PS3 controller, washing ashore on June 20 for 5,500 yen ($59), and that's including tax.
While the metallic gray controller looks suited to Raiden's fashion sensibilities in Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, it launches in conjunction with The Last of Us. That's just fine, since a controller based on that game would probably be covered in fungus. There's no word on a stateside release of the silver DualShock 3.

via http://wololo.net/2013/03/29/release...compatibility/
The latest VHBL release for Apache Overkill had several compatibility issues. Some of these issues have now been fixed, through a mod by JeoWay. Jeoway has taken the time to improve the latest VHBL to add better support.
According to his thread, the update improves homebrew compatibility and some of the homebrew that he has gotten to work are:
- Lamecraft (Terrain generation works)
- DOOM (Sound works right most of the time, playable)
- SNES9xTYL 042 (only this specific version)
- gpsp kai (The emulator itself works fine, saving is a bug in the emulator)
- yMenu
- pyMenu
- Nazi Zombies Portable
He has still not managed to get Daedalus working though (and a note for those who ask, DaedalusX64 will not work with VHBL, as it requires Kernel access. Older versions of Daedalus might however work eventually).

Hello I made a update for my Learn Japanese game. This version now includes MP4 playback thanks to Lua Player Plus by NaNnI and Rinnegatamante. I've added an option to randomize questions, and I included a new karaoke rhythm game.
It's basically a trivia game designed to help people memorize Japanese words and phrases. The questions will display in English and the objective is to translate the word in it's Japanese counterpart. Once you answer all the questions in sequential order, the stage will clear. There are 15 stages in all, it starts off relatively easy then gradually gets more difficult as you progress.
MP4 playback won't work for PS Vita users running TN-V. You can hold R during start up to skip the intro, then in options menu, switch the version to 0.9B. This version doesn't have MP4 playback.

Work on Doom 4 was completely rebooted by developer Id Software at the end of 2011.
That’s according to Kotaku, which describes the game as being “in trouble” as it approaches its fifth year in development.
“An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that Id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect,” said Bethesda vice president of marketing and PR Pete Hines.
“As a result, Id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we’re ready to talk about the Doom 4 Id is making, we will let folks know.”
It was originally being developed as a re-imagining of Doom 2 and saw players joining a resistance movement helping to protect the Earth from invaders. A cinematic approach had been taken, leading to some staff internally referring to it as “Call of Doom”.

Sony positioned PlayStation 4 as the developer-first platform at GDC 2013. It is busily eulogising PS4’s simpler PC-like architecture and has, emblematically, signed up indie hero Jonathan Blow’s next game The Witness as a timed PS4 exclusive. But is its attempt to win indie hearts and minds actually working? We asked several independent developers at GDC 2013’s IGF Pavilion whether they’re considering bring their games to PS4 (and Vita), and the majority didn’t know enough about the console to feel comfortable answering. One indie that certainly has taken notice is Dennaton Games. It has already confirmed that Hotline Miami is coming to PS4 and Vita, and told us that Sony instigated the deal. “Yeah, they’ve been sneaking around in the shadows,” Dennaton Games’ Dennis Wedin told us. ”They came over at Gamescom last year and checked [Hotline Miami] out, and they were talking to some of our friends like Vlambeer. They’ve been interested the whole time. They approached our publisher about Hotline Miami and said they wanted to do it.”“It feels like Sony wants to come back to the way they were on PlayStation 2, releasing those kind of odd games that maybe aren’t smash hits straight away. That’s the reason I always played PlayStation – those quirkier games.”Sony looks to have taken note of the critical adoration surrounding Hotline Miami, then. But most indies we spoke to, Simogo’s Simon Flesser included, remained focused on PC and mobile, with PS4 barely on their radar. “I don’t know…I don’t feel any different now about PlayStation,” said Flesser. “If we had a good concept, and if someone were willing to fund that concept, then sure.”Michael Brough, the prolific creator of Glitch Tank, Vesper 5, Corrypt, Zaga-33 and more, seemed similarly open to offers, but it’s clear that Sony that needs to do all of the chasing if it is to win over the indie crowd.“It sounds like they’re good for indies at the moment and that’s kind of cool,” said Brough. “I’d like to sell games and make money to live on, so yeah I’m interested by their pitch and I’m going to talk to them about it, but I don’t really know much about it – it’s not my scene. People have been tweeting me saying ‘you should speak Sony, they’re nice’”Yann Seznez of Edinburgh’s Lucky Frame (Bad Hotel, Wave Trip) was rather more enthusiastic. “It’s totally interesting, yeah,” he said. “I mean we’re not at all excited about only working for one platform, we want to get your stuff out to as many different people as possible so if Sony’s willing to take risks and take funky cool games and unusual ideas and put them on their platform, then we are totally all about it.”“I’ve seen people from Sony calling out on Twitter saying ‘hey, if you’re an indie then get in touch with us’ and we did that and they got right back us right away. If anyone’s enthusiastic about taking our stuff to their platform, and Sony seem to be, then we’re totally up for it.”It is, of course, early days for PS4 as a platform. It appears that Sony’s efforts outside triple-A right now involve courting big-name indies like Jonanthan Blow and Dennaton, and hoping that other indies will follow. After a GDC which showed an indie community more numerous and more influential than ever, it’s a smart move, but one which will need continued, consistent commitment if it is to prove fruitful for PS4.

Mark Rein, vice president of Unreal Engine creator Epic Games, has hailed the PlayStation 4 for the “crazy, ridiculous stuff” developers can do with it, even going so far as to say that it was “like giving you the world’s best PC.”
“I think it’s a very smart move on Sony’s behalf to build this sort of enhanced PC architecture and then put so much in it. Let’s not forget it has 16 times the memory we had in PlayStation 3 – that’s not insignificant. Knowing that every machine has that, we can do crazy, ridiculous stuff with that,” he said in an interview with CVG.
“Even Windows for most people is tied to about 2 GB of addressable memory space. This really opens up beyond what most PCs can do, because most PCs are running a 32-bit version of Windows. It’s like giving you the world’s best PC,” Rein added.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II will receive its second DLC pack later this month, according to a leaked promotional image.
The image (via Joystiq) was supposedly snapped at a Best Buy, and displays ‘Uprising’ as the content’s title, as well as an April 16th release date. The info matches up with a previous source code leak that unearthed content of the same name.
Maps in the image include Vertigo, Encore, Studio, and Magma, and there also appears to be a new undead mode called Mob of the Dead.
No official word from Activision as of yet. If history repeats itself (and the content is indeed real), expect the Black Ops II add-on to launch exclusively on Xbox Live, and arrive a month or so later on PSN and PC.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer believes that Sony has hit upon a winning strategy with the PlayStation 4: treating developers in a reasonable fashion.
Speaking to OXM, Schafer said it was clear that Sony was taking a different approach with the PlayStation 4, because it had bothered to ask Double Fine for its opinion in the first place - the sort of privileged relationship Schafer associates with studios like Insomniac and Bungie.
"This is one of the first times where we've been approached by a platform holder like Sony and asked, 'first, what do you guys want from this new box? We have this new feature, what could you do with it?'" he said. "We've already got some guys playing with some of the new features to see what we can do with it".
This year's Game Developers Conference was positive for Sony's console, as the company's claims of a new inclusive approach to developers were lent credence by people both within the company and without.
Lead system architect Mark Cerny admitted that a primary objective was to avoid the hardware becoming "a puzzle" for programmers. This was supported by Epic's Mark Rein, who called the PS4's architecture, "a really perfect gaming PC."
"It's not that hard to win over developers because all we want is to be treated with just a little bit of reason," Schafer said. "Often you just get told the most unreasonable, crazy things and you're like 'really? That's how you're going to treat us?'
"Just doing things like letting us patch our games when we want to, put our games on sale and release our games in territories that they should be released in - just doing a few things like that can make a developer very enamoured of you."

PlayStation 4 is the most desirable gadget of 2013 among games enthusiasts, according to a new questionnaire undertaken by retail chain GameStop. The next Sony console was named the most anticipated machine with 34 per cent of the survey panel declaring an interest in buying the system, a number which outperforms smartphones (23 per cent) and tablets (22 per cent). However the methodology of the survey was not disclosed, and the audience were targeted GameStop customers, meaning that the results do not necessarily represent the wider consumer market. Meanwhile, Microsoft's next generation Xbox was left off the list, likely due to it not being announced. On Tuesday, GameStop chief executive Paul Raines said the next generation Xbox will be "a very hot, compelling device".GameStop has said that nearly 900,000 consumers have signed up to receive the retailer's early info on PS4. Sony has set a PS4 release date for the end of 2013.

Arc System Works has designs on bringing a new fighting game series to the PlayStation 4, according to Shoryuken's translation of Dengeki's interview with BlazBlue series producer Toshimichi Mori.
"We can't give you a definite title yet, but we want to make one," Mori said. "We actually made Guilty Gear targeting the Dreamcast, and we started creating BlazBlue around the time of the PS3 release, so we want to make a game for PS4 when the system releases. Creating new things at the turning point of time is who Arc System Works is, so we would like to take it on."
If we may be so bold, Arc System Works, might we suggest a 2D fighting game based on the works of Hayao Miyazaki? Kiki vs. Yubaba, Princess Mononoke vs. Nausicaä of the Valley – just think about it.

Sony’s PS4 will be released in October and cost £300. Or at least that’s what a reporter for The Sun believes.
Both statements are dropped into the paper’s interview with Sony’s Andrew House, although neither are attributed to the exec. Indeed, The Sun simply says PS4 is “believed to be coming out in October” and that “experts believe [PS4] could retail for about £300”.
Both statements could be true. Or just one of them. Or neither of them. Indeed, is there even such a thing as empirical truth, as Hume once asked?
We’re going a bit off track here I think.
Anyhow, elsewhere in the interview House reiterates that while Sony is obviously looking to service the hardcore gaming community with its new machine, it isn’t forgetting about the wider market.
“We are not going down the route of making the console pink of course,” he stated. “I think the key is to have people — and increasingly women — with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot ’em up games. The key is getting games developers — who are going to make the next Angry Birds — excited about the PS4. And they are.”
£5 on Sony releasing a pink PS4 by 2015, anyone?

Pottermore, the official online, social universe for Harry Potter lore, is now a part of PlayStation Home. Pottermore in PS Home expands upon features in the browser version – including dueling, collecting trading cards and exploring Diagon Alley – and adds new activities, such as trivia, riding the Hogwarts Express, and a four-player mini-game called Book Herding.
Pottermore in Home can link with online Pottermore accounts via the Navigator App, allowing players to trade cards. PS3 players already got a taste of Pottermore in Wonderbook: Book of Spells, which we found to be a moderately thrilling experience, even for someone who isn't techically a "young adult" anymore.

Eidos Montreal’s long-rumoured Thief title is finally out in the open, confirmed for PC, PS4 and, presumably, the next Xbox.We caught up with the game’s producer Stephane Roy recently to get an idea of how his team is approaching the project. You can find the most recent Thief images in our gallery here.Your Garrett seems to have more of an edge and a hardness to him. Was that deliberate decision?
I think it’s a question of perception. On my side, I really think the Garrett you like is back. We worked very hard to respect his personality – dark humour, cynical, talking to himself. Maybe you have this feeling because of the visual aspect. Keep in mind that at that time the look of the character was dictated by the limitations of the technology. Today, we can give him exactly the look we have in mind. Was there much crossover between the Deus Ex and Thief teams?
Not a lot; honestly, they’re different teams. But you’re right, when you think about what they did. The pressure was very high on their side to prove, ‘Yes, we can reinvent a Deus Ex game.’ It’s exactly the same story on our side now. They had a lot of success, it’s really a good game, so thanks to them, because it’s very useful for us – people are willing to give us a chance, since it’s Eidos Montreal that worked on Deus Ex, and the studio proved that we can do it.

Ride to Hell, a biker-focused IP announced by Deep Silver back in 2008, will finally launch later this year. Not as one game, but as a trio of titles sold across various platforms.
Ride to Hell: Retribution will launch in North America on June 25th and worldwide on June 28th for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The game is in development at Eutechnyx, and will be available via retail and (presumably) digital methods.
Ride to Hell: Route 666 is detailed as a downloadable title also set to launch in June for XBLA, PSN, and Steam. It’s in development at Black Forest Games and will feature more arcade-style gameplay in comparison to Retribution.
Finally, Ride to Hell: Beatdown will launch at some point for mobile devices. No specifics, such as developer, platform (iOS, Android), release window or pricing info, were mentioned in Deep Silver’s announcement.

“Not going down the route of making the console pink" to attract female gamers

Sony Computer Entertainment's president and chief executive Andrew House has spoken briefly about how the company plans to make the new PlayStation 4 console more attractive to female and casual gamers.
"We are not going down the route of making the console pink of course," he told The Sun.
"I think the key is to have people - and increasingly women - with different sensibilities creating different games. It is not all about shoot 'em up games."
He also suggested that the touchpad on the consoles controller would make it a more attractive platform for casual games.
"The key is getting games developers - who are going to make the next Angry Birds - excited about the PS4. And they are."
Recently the consoles lead system architect, Mark Cerny, also explained how this time around Sony had built a much more developer friendly machine.

The original Fatal Frame is scheduled to launch on PSN this Tuesday, as revealed on the PlayStation Blogcast. Fatal Frame enters the PSN Store as a PS2 Classic, and it never leaves because that's how horror works.
Tecmo's first installment in the Fatal Frame series introduces Miku, a young girl who can see spirits. Her brother, who shares her powers, goes missing, and Miku tracks him to a derelict mansion. There, she picks up her mother's Camera Obscura, a device that captures souls on film, and must navigate out of the mansion while still searching for her brother.
Be on the lookout for Fatal Frame's official announcement in the PSN drop this week.

PPSSPP Git (2013/04/07) is compiled. PPSSPP is a fast and portable PSP emulator for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, written in C++.
PPSSPP Git Changelog:
* Merge pull request #1191 from raven02/patch-9
Miss parenthesis in GE_TEXFUNC_BLEND
* Clean up if-else
* Miss parenthesis in GE_TEXFUNC_BLEND
* Merge pull request #1196 from unknownbrackets/ui-tweaks
Minor adjustments to the menu screen
* Fix drag and drop loading on Windows.
* Adjust spacing a bit to look less cluttered.
* Don't stretch icons for Minis, keep aspect.
* Show up to 12 items in recent on Windows.
It's a tiny bit cluttered, and I know more is coming, but it's pretty
convenient for now...
* Don't try to analyze prx's either - tests.
* Always show the Exit button, useful in fullscreen.
Fixes #1193. Could make it conditional but doesn't hurt...
* Merge pull request #1195 from unknownbrackets/dispatch
More dispatch thread fixes
* Don't get stuck on idle when interrupts run.
This was happening when the dispatch thread was disabled.
* sceIoRead/Write doesn't work without dispatch.
Except stdout/etc.
* IO waits don't work without dispatch enabled.
* Only OpenAsync works with dispatch disabled.
And it even re-enables dispatch.
* Don't suspend/resume dispatch while interrupts off.
* Don't allow wait in event flags without dispatch.
But this happens after other param checks.
* Don't wait on LwMutexes with dispatch disabled.
* Stop threadend timeout when the thread ends.
Fixes threads waking up early in tests.
* Merge pull request #1197 from unknownbrackets/pad-fix
Skip pads if their analog is not set
* Skip pads if their analog is not set.
Not sure if a deadzone is needed... or if some pads may do a constant
bottom left or something...
* Merge pull request #1192 from unknownbrackets/dlist-parts
Improve displaylist signals
* Implement the jump, call, and ret signals.
Still buggy, but more things show...
* Implement sync signal in display lists.
Makes dialogs show up in 3rd Birthday.
* Implement the pause signal a bit better.
* These signals seem to skip the next FINISH, report.
* Don't listsync until after the signal handler.
* Qt: Fix stuck keys, support accelerometer on all mobile platforms.
* Merge pull request #1189 from unknownbrackets/dlist-parts
sceGe*Sync(wait)
* Implement sceGeListSync().
* If the interrupt is not run, don't flip gpuState.
Technically this is a hack, hopefully can remove it soon.
* Implement sceGeDrawSync().
* Qt Fix that was meant to be included before. No longer crashes after running a game.

Tim Schafer says Sony asked what his studio wants from its next-gen console
Consumer favorite and Kickstarter legend Tim Schafer says Double Fine has been approached by Sony about PS4 development.
The studio has been in headlines constanly since it took to Kickstarter last year and started a craze that has opened doors for many small to mid-sized studios.
With all the media buzz around the San Francisco team, it's little wonder that Sony would want Double Fine to back its new console.
“Let me just say we’ve been talking with Sony, can I say that? I don’t know, I think I might get in trouble,” Schafer told the Official Playstation Magazine.
“We’ve already got some guys playing with some of the new features to see what we can do with it."

Skyrim has been patched on Xbox 360, adding a Legendary difficulty, Legendary skills, and a slew of bug fixes. The PS3 update is expected to hit later today. The Legendary skills allow players to reset their level 100 skills to level 15, netting them an extra skill point in the process. If done enough, players could fill out every perk in their chosen tree. It also allows players to level beyond the previous effective level cap of 81, and do so without diversifying their skills. The bug fixes and gameplay tweaks include improved stability, greater variety in combat dialogue, better companion AI when it comes to equipping superior weaponry and armor.Legendary difficulty greatly increases the HP and damage done by enemies, making the overall game significantly more difficult than previous iterations.Patch 1.9 has been available on Steam since March 4. The full patch notes are available at the Bethesda blog.

A senior Blizzard designer has offered suggestion that shelved PS2 action game StarCraft: Ghost could one day be released. Way back in 2002 the ill-fated spin-off was pitched as a stealth-action and third-person shooter hybrid for consoles. However, after being perpetually delayed Blizzard eventually announced it had been put on "indefinite hold" in 2006.Now speaking to OPM, Diablo 3 senior designer Matthew Burger claimed that the spin-off title had "never been cancelled" outright, adding: "It's on hold."Asked directly if the title will ever be released, Burger replied simply: "Maybe."The common thread between Ghost and StarCraft 2 is Nova, an operative that was to be the protagonist of the console game. She appeared briefly in the main game before making another appearance in the expansion.Speaking last summer, StarCraft 2 lead Dustin Browder said that Nova's appearance in the recent RTS release wasn't indication of a renewed interest in Ghost. He did, however, leave the carrot dangling on the stick:"It doesn't mean that in two years from now, we won't have those meetings, the team won't be formed, but there is literally nothing happening around that game right now that would indicate that there's any likelihood that it will happen," he said in June."It's just as likely we'll do that again as Lost Vikings 3 or whatever. There's just no guarantees one way or the other, but nothing is happening."We are super huge fans of consoles. We love console gaming as players," Browder added. "I wasn't really party to [the decision to put Ghost on hold] but I know it was a difficult decision."

Ubisoft Montreal has called the PlayStation 4 "a really pleasant surprise" thanks to a "radical change" of hardware strategy from Sony Computer Entertainment. CEO Yannis Mallat said he believes that the move to new console hardware will be "less complex" than previous transitions thanks to the familiar architecture of PS4, which is essentially comprised of off-the-shelf PC parts."From what we can talk about, which is the PlayStation 4, it's been a radical change from those guys," he told CVG."I'll tell you an anecdote: When I was the producer on Prince of Persia: Sands of Time we managed to get our hands on a very good programmer who's still on the Assassin's Creed core team."One day on his desk he had a black book all written in Japanese, and I was like, 'what is that?' It was the documentation support for coding for PS2. 'That's why I wanted to have Japanese lessons,' he said - to understand and make the most out of the machine."That day I understood how complex it was to develop on PlayStation 2. So we were eager to find out what the PlayStation 3 would be in terms of architecture, and it was pretty much the same but more complex."Mallet said the PS4 architecture vindicates Ubisoft's decision to start developing its next-gen games, such as Watch Dogs and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, early on high-end PCs."PlayStation 4 really comes as a pleasant surprise because indeed it's a very familiar architecture," he said."I think it's paying off for us deciding to develop on high-end PCs early. It's a less complex transition."

Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, the Wii U version, is $20 at Best Buy as part of its weekly deal offer. Also on sale are the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions ofFar Cry 3 and Assassin's Creed 3 for $30, or PS3, Xbox 360 and PC editions ofBlack Ops 2 for $40 each.
We found the Wii U version of Arkham City to have some cool features, such as the WiiPad audio function whenever Batman picks up a conversation on his earpiece. Otherwise, it's definitely not the prettiest way to play a Batman game.

* Merge pull request #1221 from raven02/patch-2
Fragment Shader : use mix() for decal/blend
* Fragment Shader : use mix() for decal/blend
* Buildfix for iOS. Fixes #1220.
* Merge pull request #1217 from unknownbrackets/fbo-flicker
Adjust FBO decimation to optimize for creation
* Change FBO age back to 5, gets in a create loop...
* Adjust FBO decimation to optimize for creation.
But, keep aggressively decimating for a few frames.
* Merge pull request #1219 from unknownbrackets/mpeg-fix
Initial sceMpegGetUserdataAu() from JPCSP
* Initial sceMpegGetUserdataAu() from JPCSP.
Because I got the stub wrong, so now it does something.
* Merge pull request #1214 from unknownbrackets/pad-fix
Treat the keyboard and pads differently
* Treat the keyboard and pads differently.
We basically never want two pads active at once, but keyboard is
different. So, they need to be treated differently.
Fixes #1212.
* Merge pull request #1213 from unknownbrackets/dlist-cycles
Try to match GPU cycles to the CPU
* Use regular events for GPU for now, quicker.
There's too much latency in threadsafe events, causing tests to fail.
Might break games too. I guess they need to execute more often...
* Don't allow two drawsyncs to be in play at once.
* Slow down the GPU clock estimate.
This makes Fat Princess for example much faster.
* Make sure lists aren't reused before they complete.
* Delay GPU signals and waits to simulate cycles.
* Merge pull request #1215 from raven02/patch-1
Add "Use Media Engine" to pause screen as well
* Keep Fast Memory as unstable
* Add "Use Media Engine" to pause screen as well
* Merge pull request #1216 from unknownbrackets/alloc-func
Initial stab at implementing some new memory funcs
* Initial stab at implementing some new memory funcs.
Borrowed from JPCSP, kept simple. Need to do tests.
* Don't "DirtyShader" at the end of frame, instead just "stop". Fixes issues caused by vertex arrays left enabled still hanging around.
* Bigger stack buffer for gpu stats (yes need to do something better here).
* Don't use PPGe for debug overlays. Fixes fps counter in games where it didn't work before.
* Merge pull request #1209 from unknownbrackets/threadqueue-perf
Don't save/restore VFPU regs for threads that don't use them
* Don't save vregs for threads that don't use them.
* Optimize resched with a running thread.
Esp. if it would go back to itself.
* fragment shader: RGBA DECAL does make more sense this way
* Merge pull request #1200 from unknownbrackets/threadqueue-perf
Improve threadqueue performance
* Fix crash if queue is empty during savestate.
On load it would then crash.
* Dynamically size the thread queue, explicitly alloc.
* Replace the thread ready queue with non-STL.
It seems much faster.
* Centralize the thread ready queue logic.
This makes it slower for now, but should make it easier to optimize correctly.
* Merge pull request #1203 from raven02/patch-10

PCSX2 SVN r5607 is compiled. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:

Sony told developers console would ship with 4GB RAM, says Just Add Water CEO
Sony kept all but its closest studios in the dark about its decision to give the PS4 8GB GDDR5 RAM, says Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray.
Gilray's studio already had their dev kit, and was working on a secret title for the new console, but didn't find out about the real specs until the unveiling on February 20th.
"We were told [PS4] was 4GB originally and we first knew it had 8GBs when Mark said at the event's stage, 'And it has 8GB of memory.' We'd had kits at that point for a good while," Gilray told Videogamer.
While it is likely that "a couple of really close first-parties" knew about the 8GBs before the event, Gliray says that "most third-parties, were in the dark and happy with 4GB.
One of the benefits of the additional memory is that Sony has fenced in its system memory so that developers don't have to worry about it.

Lost Planet 3 has been delayed yet again. After missing its original early 2013 release, it was delayed until June 26. Now, however, it’s been pushed back to August 30 in the EU, and August 27 in the North American regions. The decision to delay was due to “business reasons,” according to Capcom.Lost Planet 3 is due out on current generation consoles and PC, and will return to EDN III, the snowy planet on which the first game in the series was set.

Guerrilla Games’ technical director Michiel Van Der Leeuw has dismissed the notion that PS4 is little more than a high-end PC, suggesting that those describing the console that way are ‘trolls’ and ‘fanboys’.Speaking in an interview to be published in E253, on sale Thursday, Van Der Leeuw explained that his studio was heavily involved in the creation of PS4’s arcitecture, and while it might be more PC-like than its predecessor, it is still very much a games console.Referring to those calling PS4 a PC in a fancier box, he said: “That’s difficult because people are trolling, right. What do you say to a troll? You don’t feed the trolls, that’ll make them grow.”“I mean, it has always been a piece of high-end hardware that we put in a box, we find exactly the right components that complement each other and make a really good gaming experience. This is exactly the same thing – it is a console. The fact that the best pieces of hardware are also devised from, or optimised versions of, the stuff we find in PCs doesn’t make it any less a console. I can imagine if you find people with a vested interest to say PC gaming has won, they will find lots of great arguments in the fact that we use some of the same parts. But you know that’s just fanboys on the internet, I guess.”Van Der Leeuw went on to explain the differences between PS4 and a high-powered PC. “A PC is a number of parts which also has bridges in between where there are inefficiencies that may not be exactly the right match. We’ve got the right amount of memory, video card, everything balanced out. I know it was a very conscious effort to make sure that, with the speed of the memory, the amount of compute units, the speed of the hard-drive that we put in, that there would not be any bottlenecks. So the amount of pixel-pushers that you have, the amount of memory, the speed of your compute units make sure that you don’t hit any of the weakspots of the hardware.”This balancing of PS4’s architecture and the use of complementary components make it simpler to work with, said Van Der Leeuw. “Whereas if you have a PC very often your buffs, or your express buffs are very slow compared to your video RAM which is GDDR5 and your main RAM then is even slower than that, but you compensate by sticking buffers in there… there’s a lot of things to contemplate in the fact that it is a replaceable-parts architecture. This [PS4] is where all of the parts are designed to work together, naturally.”He added that Guerrilla was part of a constant iteration process with PS4′s innards. Guerrilla made at least five different major changes to the graphics chip, CPU and on the bandwidth between the different components, to define and then eliminate any disruption in performance.“I think it was for more than a year that we knew the main ingredients and there was just discussion after discussion trying to find a bottleneck,” he added. “We actually had parts of both Killzone 3 and very early Killzone 4 art assets running through simulators to try to find out how it would behave on our speculative hardware that didn’t exist – trying to find bottlenecks in the hardware that we could fix before we could even think about the chip.”You can read more about how the Killzone studio shaped Sony’s next console in the new issue of Edge magazine, on sale Thursday. You can buy or subscribe to Edge magazine in print, on iPad, on Google Play and through Zinio.

Tales of Xillia – the 13th flagship title in the Tales franchise – is heading to North America on August 6th, Namco Bandai has revealed.
Gematsu reports producer Hideo Baba revealed a summer launch window for the PS3-exclusive JRPG’s arrival stateside, and the site later updated to the exact date following Namco Bandai’s announcement at a recently held media event.
No word on a Europe launch as of yet.
On a related note, Baba also told Kotaku that there are no current plans for Tales games on Wii U, PS4, or the next-gen Xbox. He added that Vita remakes for Tales of Hearts R and Tales of Innocent R aren’t in the cards due to Vita’s lukewarm reception in North America.
"Unfortunately, at this present time we don't have any plans to release any of the Vita titles. One of the main reasons is unfortunately the PlayStation Vita is doing relatively poorly in North America, so it's one of those things that if the numbers increased considerably, then it's something we could consider."

Tired of all those messy icons cluttering up your PlayStation Vita's home screen? Sony's providing a solution in its next update, firmware version 2.10, which enables folders of up to 10 items to be organized on the screen. That means you could potentially take those 100 max applications allowed and stuff them all into folders on the home screen, effectively condensing your various home screens from 10 to one. The rest of the update isn't so thrilling -- namely, being able to identify which memory card you've got in the device, some email app enhancements, and video support which "allows you to play video within the browser." There're a few more minor tweaks, which we've included in the list past the jump -- a complete list of updates in gritty detail will show up here when the update goes live at some point "later this evening."

Draw Slasher is coming to PlayStation Vita, its developer has announced. The gory cartoon-style ninja slicing game launches on the PlayStation Store in Europe on 24th April and in the US on 23rd April.Draw Slasher was made by Polish indie developer Mass Creation. The first Draw Slasher, subtitled The Quest, launched in 2011 on touch devices as a spin-off from 2009's Dark Ninja vs Pirate Monkey Zombies! A black and white version called Draw Slasher Origins launched in 2012.In the game you play a ninja called Hanzo who runs around slicing up zombies. You draw a line to jump, dash, dodge and slash, and pinch the screen to use Ninjutsu Techniques. There's a story, hardcore challenges and, within the Arcade mode, two sub-modes: Survival, which tracks your kill count, and Gatekeeper, which tasks the player with preventing the zombies from entering Hanzo's village."It quickly became clear that the Vita version was too small, so we decided to extend it with new locations, enemies and bosses, doubling the amount of content compared to the original," producer Artur Gosk told our friends at Eurogamer Poland."Then there are new mini-games and modes adapted to the Vita. Along the way, we changed the mechanics. In some cases we turned it upside down. The game remained close to the original idea, but very different at the same time. That's why we decided to call it simply Draw Slasher."

Level-5 was listed as one of the third-party developers signed on for PlayStation 4 development. CEO Akihiro Hino told Nikkei (translated by Siliconera) that the company has a specific game in mind for the platform, which is in the "planning" stage now. He indicated that the developer and publisher "may" be able to announce this game in the near future.
Hino said that it's important to figure out the PS4's network components when planning a game for it, as well as the usual specs and graphical tech.
It's going to be really satisfying when Level-5 is making a PS5 game. Just for the sake of symmetry.

Revealing Mark Cerny's Knack first during PS4 unveiling an intentional decision to show off diversity
Sony would hate to see all of the games developed for the PS4 as first-person shooters or action-adventure titles, Sony’s worldwide studios president has said.
Speaking to Edge, Shuhei Yoshida said Sony made the intentional decision to show Mark Cerny’s latest game Knack first during its PS4 unveiling in February.
He said that while a plethora of people are interested in triple-A blockbusters and photorealistic titles, they were not the only kind of games players can enjoy.
“It was pretty intentional,” said Yoshida.
“Mark’s idea was like ‘what about [a] Crash Bandicoot for PS4?’ when he suggested the concept of Knack. We were like yeah we hate to see all the PS4 games being FPS or action-adventure or very photorealistic, you know big-budget blockbuster games. And you know people like these games but these are not the only kinds of games that people can have fun with.”

Ryan Ackroyd to be sentenced along with fellow hackers in May
A fourth member of the LulzSec hacker group has pleaded guilty to attacks on websites owned by Sony and Nintendo, among others.
According to a report on Bloomberg, 26 year-old Ryan Ackroyd entered a plea of guilty at a hearing in London yesterday. Ackroyd had previously denied any involvement with the attacks, but he will now be sentenced along with fellow LulzSec members Jake Davis, Mustafa Al-Bassam and Ryan Cleary on May 14.
Prosecutors stated that Ackroyd was instrumental in attacks on Sony, Nintendo, Twentieth Century Fox and the National Health Service between February and September 2011.
"They turned to him for his expertise as a hacker," said Sandip Patel, a prosecutor at the hearing.
LulzSec was one of the most prominent hacker groups in the world, following a series of high-profile attacks on government and commercial targets. However, the group disbanded in June 2011, around the time of Cleary's arrest.
"Behind the mask, behind the insanity and mayhem, we truly believe in the AntiSec movement," a statement released by the group read. "We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us."

Ubisoft has officially announced an HD Flashback remake for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN following a leak earlier this year. The new game, rebuilt in 3D using the Unreal Engine, is being helmed by original creator Paul Cuisset and his French development studio VectorCell."It's not a reboot. It's Flashback re-imagined," describes the game's official docs. "You'll find everything you always liked in this classic that set standards of the genre in the 90's, and brought up to speed with the 21st century technology and expectations."The original Flashback was released for Amiga in 1992, then later ported to Mega Drive, SNES, CD-ROM and Mac, among other platforms.

Japanese developer Level-5, creator of the Professor Layton series and the excellent Studio Ghibli collaboration Ni No Kuni, has confirmed it is working on a new PlayStation 4 game.Company boss Akihiro Hino revealed the project during an interview with Japanese siteNikkei Trendy (translated by Gematsu)."It's still in the planning stages, but we are also working on a PlayStation 4 title," Hino teased. "We might be able to announce it soon."Level-5 is currently investigating the PlayStation 4's focus on social features, Hino added."PlayStation 4 is next-gen hardware built with the network in mind, so more than graphics performance and specs, we need to think about communication - how to use the network features."It's unclear how much Ni No Kuni has sold - it shifted at least 500,000 copies in Japan, while another 164,000 units were shipped for the game's recent Western release. The game topped the UK charts back in January, with the stock that filtered through quickly selling out.Professor Layton, Level-5's other big series, has traditionally had its home on Nintendo consoles. The latest title, 3DS adventure Professor Layton and the Azran Legacies, is reportedly the last to feature the series' main character in a starring role.

Ubisoft roared confirmation Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon is an 80s-styled standalone shooter (you don't need FC3 to play it) headed for XBLA, PSN, and PC on May 1. The dragon's been out of the bag for a while, but today's announcement brings with it a new VHS-like trailer, along with news that PC purchases also get a copy of the game's bodacious soundtrack, as provided by Power Glove.
From what we've seen of Blood Dragon, the only narrative tie to Far Cry 3 is the open-world island setting. Beyond that, the game is a humor-laden spinoff with a new protagonist, Sgt. Rex Power Colt, a cyborg commando played by The Terminator and Aliens star Michael Biehn. It's set in a near future recoiling from "Vietnam War 2" and a recent nuclear attack on North America - well, by near future we mean one for the 1980s... which is 2007.
As the screens below show, Blood Dragon's look is far removed from the sunny skies and tropical greenery of Far Cry 3. However, players of Ubisoft's 2012 shooter will find the mechanics of this new game very familiar, both in terms of basic actions and the overall approach. You're capturing outposts once more, this time bases controlled by rogue cyborg military group Omega Force, and you're also hunting wildlife again, except now they're colossal reptiles called blood dragons whose bodies are literally lined with neon and who, just as literally, shoot lasers out of their eyes.
There's no word on a price - although a new Steam listing has it marked for $14.99 - but if you're after further details, or just further confirmation this isn't some pharmaceuticals-induced illusion, then make sure you check out our hands-on impressions later today.

Natsume is localizing the PSP version of Kemco's Mystic Chronicles, a retro-style RPG developed by Kemco. Yes, Kemco's back, and has been quietly releasing RPGs on iOS and Android for a while! In fact, Mystic Chronicles was one of those mobile releases. Siliconera notes that it was called Fantasy Chronicles on iOS, and featured what appears to be a different translation.
Mystic Chronicles is a turn-based game in which protagonist Lux and other characters are accompanied by AI "guardian beasts," whose assignments and basic behaviors can be set by the player.
The PSP version is due this summer, and we hope for Natsume's sake it'll be downloadable on Vita immediately.

Hitman Absolution is the latest coup for PlayStation Plus in Europe. Agent 47's latest adventure sneaks onto the service on May 1, joining four other as-yet-unrevealed games next month. Considering it only came out in November 2012,Absolution's impending arrival marks another strong entry in PS Plus's European line-up, with Dead or Alive 5, Sleeping Dogs, Mass Effect 3 andBatman: Arkham City all coming to the subscription service in recent months.
In the meantime, both Plus subscribers and others can take advantage of a new PSN sale for the region. The 'Declassified' sale starts today and runs until April 24, bringing savings to Crysis, Hitman, Metal Slug, and Tom Clancy games among others. Standout discounts include Hitman Trilogy HD for €11.99/£9.69, and €19.99/£15.99 for the Splinter Cell Complete Pack, which includes SC Trilogy HD, SC: Essentials, and SC: Double Agent. As usual, those prices and all the others in the sale drop a further 10 percent with Plus.

PS Vita owners will find a new firmware update awaiting them tonight, rolling over the system to version 2.1. Chief among changes is the ability to add and drop shortcuts into folders, for obsessed organizers looking to clear the clutter on their home screen. Your customized layout can then be saved to the memory card.
Some videos can be viewed in the browser with v2.1, though a memory card is required for this feature – only certain videos supported. Email has been tweaked too, and PS Plus members can update PlayStation Mobile software and upload game save data automatically to the cloud through 3G. Finally, a new mute feature in v2.1 lets you automatically silence your PS Vita speakers and pause your music when a headset isn't in use.

Asda anticipates that the UK PS4 release date will fall in 2013 and is now taking pre-orders for the console.
The Walmart-owned chain says it's the only supermarket currently offering a pre-order service for the system. You can reserve one now by putting down a £20 deposit. The console is "set to hit UK stores at the end of this year", claims a press release sent out this morning, although Asda's pre-order terms and conditions note that this could change.
They read: "The current expected date of release made by Sony is Christmas 2013. Asda make no Guarantees that this is correct or will not change and Asda shall not be held responsible if Sony change or delay the release date of the Sony PlayStation 4 in the UK and or limit stock."
Sony revealed PS4 in February, when it confirmed a PS4 release date of "holiday 2013" in at least one of Japan, Europe and the US.
Earlier this month, GameStop executive vice president Michael Hogan said Sony is planning a global PS4 release date in 2013.

Castle of Illusion's main antagonist, the witch Mizrabel, is heavily featured along with her wind-up toy soldier minions. That game's common collectible, the apple, makes an appearance as well.Last month Castle of Illusion was spotted on Australian and Brazilian Classification rating boards, suggesting a remake or re-release was on the way. This fancy new black and white trailer suggests the former, ala Capcom's recent announcement of a Duck Tales remake.According to the Brazilian ratings board leak, Castle of Illusion was rated for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U and Vita. This doesn't necessarily mean it will be released on all these platforms though, so we'll have to wait for a more formal announcement on that.

Evolution Studios, the developer of the MotorStorm series and upcomingPlayStation 4 racing game Drive Club, says it was instrumental in the designing and development of the DualShock 4 controller. Speaking to Edge, Evolution's technical director Scott Kirkland revealed that the studio, along with Killzone developer Guerrilla Games, has been involved with the development of Sony next-gen console for a number of years."I think this goes back to Christmas 2011," said Kirkland. "We started working with the guys in Japan on what became the DualShock 4."We were instrumental in securing the specific gyro components that [will] go in the DualShock 4; we had prototypes that demonstrated that the really high frequency gyros were the ones that allowed us to chuck the controller around like a steering wheel, and the ones that they were considering [meant] you could get a fair degree of lag and have to rely on accelerometers to compensate for that. So we put a very compelling case forward to the guys in Japan, they listened and they're the components that are in the DualShock 4."The control side of things has always been a really important thing for racing games, so we made sure that we got involved in the controller discussion very early on."Evolution used downloadable Vita racing game MotorStorm RC to refine the analogue sticks, and collaborated with Guerrilla Games to work on the triggers."We did a prototype using MotorStorm RC that allows you to exploit the reduced deadzone size on the controller and the more accurate sticks," Kirkland said. "It's scary how long we've been involved in this - we've been secretive about it for so long."The triggers is another area where there's been a huge amount of development. There's been a great back-and-forth between the likes of ourselves and some of the firstperson shooter guys at Guerrilla. They wanted specific things out of the triggers and, from a racing game perspective, we wanted lots of subtlety of control and to have really analogue brakes and acceleration, and so in some cases we had to reach a little bit of a compromise on that. But the controller sits on the desk beautifully, it doesn't accidentally press the triggers, [and] they've got really nice resistance to them."Earlier this month, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat called the PlayStation 4 "a really pleasant surprise", noting that developing for the console is easier than PS3 thanks to a "radical change" of hardware strategy from Sony.

Jaguar killer app Tempest 2000 (pictured) is being updated by Tempest series creator, and flashing-lights-and-colors enthusiast, Jeff Minter for Vita. TxK is a new version of his frequently iterated game, which sees players circling the periphery of a geometric prism, shooting down the sides into the screen.
"It'll be the pure, straightforward shooter that maybe you hoped for when you first saw Space Giraffe," Minter said on his blog. "We're not going to overload you with ultra psychedelia, but we will make it fluid and colourful and awesome-looking on the Vita's delicious, vibrant OLED screen.
Minter was approached by Sony, presumably as part of the company's indie PSN push. He plans to keep a development log for updates on TxK, a game that he already promises is "going to be *awesome*."

via http://wololo.net/2013/04/13/release-tn-v-v3/
TN-V v3 was completed a little sooner than expected and you can now update!
If you are unaware of what TN-V is, TN-V is a 6.60 Custom Emulator Firmware for the PSVita that takes use of all kexploits released for firmwares 2.02 and below bringing the full PSP XMB environment. You can read more about TN-V on the official release page here.
Otherwise for those of you aware, we just recently announced the v3 update for TN-V however its already completed and ready for you to install right now. TN’s new update for TN-V brings a ton of bug fixes and support for new features. Some of you were having issues with SC3 and Urbanix JP exploits, but you should no longer have any issues or errors. Below you can find the complete changelog for the update. This may be the last update for TN-V on 2.02 and below.
Changelog TN-V v3:
•- Added possibility to play the exploit game. The first 2 letters of the savedata folder will be replaced with ‘TN’.
•- Added support for the great VSH plugin ‘PSPConsole’.
•- Added support for Prometheus patched backup games.
•- Fixed Super Collapse 3 and Urbanix JP exploit.
•- Fixed msfs driver bug that caused data corruption which led to resetted settings, again.
•- Rewrote ELF loading. Fixed loading of static ELF of some games like ‘Splinter Cell’.
•- Redirected non-working power functions to similar functions.
•- PSN purchased PSX games work again.

via http://wololo.net/2013/04/14/ps-vita...-improvements/
PS Vita’s Firmware 2.10 was recently released, and we already know that Sony blocked the Apache Overkill VHBL, but this update comes with quite a few hidden surprises called “stability improvements”
Sony has made what appears to be some strange attempts at slowing hackers down and trying to make PSP emu hacking harder in 2.10. Many changes have apparently been made to make our job harder. So far, we have discovered two big changes. But, as often, there is a way around them!
So, what are these changes? Lets see.
TN-V
Some of the changes were discovered by Total_Noob, and appear to be attempts at preventing eCFW (and in this case, TN-V) from running, or, at least, make it more difficult.
You can see details in Total_Noob’s post here, where, according to his post, Sony has made yet another attempt to stop homebrew on the Vita.
It seems some critical parts of the memory have been made readonly, and the location of the flash files in RAM has been changed as well, but TN has managed to bypass all these measures. Note however that some of TN’s statements seem to have been contradicted by the fact that The Z was able to run VHBL on 2.10 on day 1, as stated by wololo here.
But one thing that is good for kexploits is that it apparently has become much easier to free up the extra 64 MB RAM that is available to the PSP emulator. This means potentially better homebrew support (in particular for very demanding homebrews such as DaedalusX64) in future eCFW releases.
VHBL and user-mode exploits in general
In addition to the ram changes stated above, it seems Sony has blocked write access to the ms0:/PSP/GAME folder on user mode exploits.
This means that none of the VHBL menus will be able to install homebrew without modifications on 2.10. Devs are currently discussing a new convention to see where VHBL should install its games moving forward.
This might also affect psp kernel exploits but that needs to be confirmed.
At the moment because it seems that the only VHBL menu that is still actively under development is pyMenu (and the soon to be released XMBM), the pyMenu team is busy at work adjusting the menu for the new path and a fix should be made available soon. (note from wololo: actually, wMenu was not being maintained because it did what it had to do, I might get back to work if it needs to be updated, don’t put me in the coffin yet )
Overall these changes all look like half-assed efforts to slow VHBL and CEF down, but no real “anti-hack” measures in the PSP emu. It feels strange Sony would still put any huge effort in the PSP emulator, especially when they already have a reasonable way to stop most psp emu hacks today (by pulling the exploited games). It is however possible these are actually changes to increase psp games compatibility in the psp emu (and increase their selection on the PSN), with some side effects impacting our hacks.

First version of Sony PSP emulator for Android/Windows has been updated. Changes:
- Another month, another version of PPSSPP! This time I've only added 0.0.5 to the version number, but that's just because I'm saving 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 for big future updates Don't worry, there's been plenty of improvements. Many more games run and some games run faster - the God of War games should now run well on modest PCs and for example the Monster Hunter games are becoming playable on fast phones (although without sound). And I've started to improve the UI - now there's a recent list and game icons in the game selector.

Sony learned some difficult lessons from the launch of PlayStation 3, and it is determined not to make those mistakes again. With Microsoft’s silence becoming ever more conspicuous, its greatest videogame rival is slowly, but surely, explaining the philosophy behind PlayStation 4. Many were not content with a controller, a few games and a vision at PlayStation Meeting on February 20th; when we speak to Sony Worldwide Studios’ vice president Michael Denny six weeks later, he isn’t revealing too much more about its price, look or launchdate. He can, however, elaborate on the new platform’s origins – how Sony’s difficult PS3 launch influenced its approach to PS4 and what happened in the five years of planning that led up to February 20th 2013. He also gives us his thoughts on why Sony didn’t reveal the console itself, and how PS4 will perform in an ever more platform agnostic game industry. Now there’s a little space between now and the reveal event, what are your personal impressions of how it went?I guess the starting point is that it’s been quite a journey to get to that announce [event]. It’s been, for all of us involved at looking at what PlayStation 4 should be, a five-year journey to get to that point. And what the announce in New York was all about was a chance for us to share our vision with everybody of what PlayStation 4 should be. And in essence I hope it came across that that vision is fairly simple, that we are absolutely looking at making a next-gen console for gamers and made by gamers.

Bethesda's Skyrim development team has bid a fond farewell to fans and confirmed it is moving on to its next project. In a blog post titled "Moving to our next adventure," the development team thanked fans for their ongoing support."Skyrim has been a labor of love for us since we started designing it in 2006. We never imagined it would become the phenomenon it has," reads the message."And that is because of you, the fans. It was all of you who made it a success. We can't thank you enough for embracing the game, spreading the word, and making it your own."The studio confirmed that the team will be diverting its attention to a "major" new project, which is in pre-production, but also said that it will provide minor updates to Skyrim when necessary."For the last year and a half we've been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs. Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio's full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet."We'll still have minor updates to Skyrim as needed. We've invested so much of ourselves into Skyrim and will never truly say goodbye to it."We loved hearing your stories, your in-game triumphs, and your suggestions. One thing stuck out to us through those emails, letters, and postings. And that is - video games matter. They're as important to you as they are to us. It's not just about entertainment, it's about your time. And you chose to spend it with our game."

Cloudberry Kingdom - a procedurally generated platformer that get harder the longer you play it - has been confirmed for release this spring on PS3, Vita, Wi U, XBLA and Steam via its newly announced publisher Ubisoft. The game won't always be this hard, but Pwnee has touted it as 'the hardest platformer ever' on its most challenging setting.
The game was successfully Kickstarted back in May last year and New York-based developer Pwnee Studios was quick to point out in an a Kickstarter update that "Nothing about the game has to change" due to this newly revealed publishing arrangement. Pwnee also confirmed that all Kickstarter rewards will be honoured."There was very little reason not to go ahead with it [the Ubisoft deal]," noted Pwnee. "We think it was far and away the best decision that could have been made for Cloudberry Kingdom and putting us in the best position to make a really great game available to as many people as possible."For more background, Ubisoft has released the following video telling the story of how two friends from college created Cloudberry Kingdom - and started a company - over the course of the last four years.

In a continuing series exploring the power of the PlayStation Vita, Digital Foundry talks to Ubisoft Sofia - developers of Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation. This Vita-exclusive title is a remarkable piece of work, successfully translating the full Assassin's Creed experience and the AnvilNext engine that powers it onto a mobile platform. It's a fascinating game for many reasons - not least of which is Ubisoft's commitment to producing an all-new franchise title built from the ground-up for the handheld, with brand new locations and a fresh cast of characters. Where other studios have downsized their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles to run on Vita, Ubisoft Sofia made the most of a remarkable opportunity - to shape their game entirely around the strengths and weaknesses of the Sony hardware, at the same time giving PS3 AC3 owners a companion purchase entirely separate and distinct from the main game. That's not to say that the game is an unmitigated triumph, as the Eurogamer reviewexplored. Resolution takes a hit, there's no anti-aliasing and frame-rate is highly variable to say the least - as you'll see in our video assets below. From a conceptual standpoint, it's also safe to say that some of the ideas - including multiple "guises" for heroine Aveline - misfire somewhat. In a game but relies so much on its free-running traversal mechanic, large sections of gameplay become a little frustrating when the parkour is taken away from you. But where it matters, this is indeed a core Assassin's Creed game and despite its faults, it remains one of our favourite Vita titles. In this deep dive interview, Ubisoft Sofia technical directors Mikhail Lozanov, Ivan Azmanov and Stefan Dyulagerov along with lead artists Biser Parashkevov and Borislav Bogdanov talk us through the creation of one of the most technologically ambitious mobile games on the market today.Digital Foundry: What was your technical assessment of the PS Vita hardware when you first started work? What were your procedures for putting the hardware through its paces?Ubisoft Sofia: Sony did a great job extracting performance from mobile hardware, with well-written software. Performance improvements from their libraries were substantial compared to other mobile vendors running on similar hardware. At the start of the project we tested the Vita with a version of Anvil used in a previously released Assassin's Creed title, but soon realised that AnvilNext from AC3 presented far greater capabilities and opportunities when combined with the Vita's hardware. Thus we switched to that engine at the earliest possible moment.

World of Tanks creator Wargaming has taken its first tentative steps toward console development.
The company acquired FEAR and MechAssault developerDay 1 Studios in late January and then two weeks later followed this up with the acquisition of Gas Powered Games.
"The hardware cannot constrain the player from getting the experience. Obviously with Day 1, we would like to expand our multi-platform venture,” chief executive officer Victor Kislyi told Games Industry.
“We don't have much experience working with consoles or mobile, but you should start one day. So we started with both Gas Powered and Day 1.”
It’s early days, however, with Kislyi confessing that Wargaming is still experimenting with consoles and hasn’t got anything in production for the upcoming PS4.
"We are still doing experiments. It's about selecting the most cool idea for the time being, seeing if it's technologically possible, and then beginning prototyping and production,” he added.
"Right now, we aren't doing anything for PlayStation 4, but nobody knows what the future holds for us. It's all about the game, the platform alone will not do miracles. It has to be a good game concept. But we don't shut doors. Every possibility in the future, we have the power to review when it is reasonable."

PS4 could launch at a lower price than its predecessor the PS3.
Admittedly, the PS3 launched in the UK at an eye-watering £425. Launching PS4 above that would be ‘brave’ to say the least. But with the new console packing plenty of tech, just how low can we expect it to go?
“We listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that,” Sony Worldwide Studios VP Michael Denny told Edge.
“We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that’s deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that’s out there.
“We’ve got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4. The initial announcement phase that we’re in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers – and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions.”
Nintendo’s Wii U Premium launched £299 and has struggled to gain traction in the UK. PS4 will of course target a largely different demographic – one that Sony hopes has more in the way of disposable income.
The safest bet is Sony launching a number of SKUs, quite possibly two – an entry-level machine and a deluxe version. Expect more in the way of storage and accessories with the high-end SKU.

Sony has learnt pricing lessons from the PS3 launch, Worldwide Studios vice president Michael Denny has suggested. The console launched with an RRP of £425/€599/$599 that slowed its adoption, and while Sony has yet to reveal PS4 pricing plans, its experience this generation will play a factor when it comes to determining the cost of the upcoming system.Asked if PS4 will launch with a more competitive price point than PS3, Denny told Edge: "There's plenty of time, we've got lots of information yet to give out on PlayStation 4."The initial announcement phase that we're in now is just to explain the vision to everybody. Part of that vision is we have created a console absolutely focused on gamers - and we want that to be gamers in the broadest sense as well. I think to some extent I can ask you to draw your own conclusions."Asked to what extent Sony's experience of the PS3 price point hampering initial momentum influenced decisions on the technical specifications of the new console, Denny said: "I guess the first thing to say is that we listen and learn and take the judgement from every console launch we ever have and we have to be informed by what the strengths of our PlayStation 3 system have been, but also the challenges of that."We want a system that can reach as broad a gaming audience as possible but whilst being a system that's deep, connected, rich and immersive and is going to give a very focused and differentiated experience than anything else that's out there."Sony revealed PS4 in February, when it confirmed a PS4 release date of "holiday 2013" in at least one of Japan, Europe and the US.

Those who purchase all 15 games in the Capcom Arcade Cabinet collection will get two additional games at no charge: 1943 Kai and Vulgus.
1943 Kai is a special version of classic shmup 1943 that was previously exclusive to Japan. Vulgus, also a shmup, is similar to Xevious in that there are no pre-set levels – players push through progressively more difficult scenarios until they lose.
This week marks the fifth and final game pack for Capcom Arcade Cabinet, which includes 1942, SonSon and Pirate Ship Higemaru. An all-in-one pack will launch on May 21 for a reduced price of $29.99 (2000 MS Points) through PSN and Xbox Live Arcade.

This video shows a running version of the Vita Half Byte Loader (VHBL) by me, The Z, at a PS Vita with the new Firmware 2.11 ! Its at the moment just a Proof of Concept, I am showing that its working. Its running better than a week ago, but I will have to increase the compatability with even more homebrews, but for now, its working fine.
This can not run ISO/CSO, just homebrews!!!

EA has at last revealed details about one of the biggest releases of 2013 – FIFA 14.
New features this year include enhanced teammate intelligence, EA says midfielders will no longer go missing when the opposition attack as improved run tracking results in tighter marking, off ball pressure and more midfield battles.
A range of new run types has boosted attacking intelligence, limiting the likelihood of scoring cheap goals through simplistic, back and forth gameplay.
Forwards can perform checked runs and can now run into space or along the backline. For the Didier Drogbas of this world, strikers can embrace their physicality and back into defenders before turning and pulling the trigger.
The protect the ball mechanic has been in FIFA for a while but EA is implementing improvements that it hopes will make it a key gameplay element in FIFA 14. Now, as an intuitive mechanism that can be initiated at any speed, players will find it’s easier to use and more integral to midfield battles.
Finishing in FIFA 14 has been improved with the 'Pure Shot' mechanic. This gives players the ability to adjust their stride and angle when bombing towards the goal and allows strikers to shoot when off-balance and pull off rushed shots when under pressure.
This unpredictable attacking style is also demonstrated by the real ball physics. Goalkeepers will have to contend with new flight paths, attempts that dip and shots that will curve and move around in the air a la Gerrard in the 2006 FA Cup final.
“Both the physics and the new shooting visuals and animation are going to feel amazing,” said EA producer Sebastian Enrique. “You will feel really rewarded when scoring or even when missing the target.”
There is now an added focus on build up play, with sprint dribble turns allowing players to move around the opposition at speed in any direction and a 1st touch control skill for dribbling called variable dribble turns.
FIFA 14 will also enhance sprint dribbling as players can now knock the ball in front of them and bend their run to pull off more angled crosses.
Career mode has also been given a makeover with a new hub and a global scouting network that allows you to search for traits as opposed to numbered stats.
FIFA 14 has been confirmed for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC with additional platforms being announced in the coming months. Next-gen wasn't mentioned... but let's not bet against it.

Despite what the sales figures might imply, the general consensus is that, for the most part, the PlayStation Vita's a neat portable console -- although some still argue Sony could do a little more to give its precious handheld a boost when it comes to available content. And just as it did with the PS3, the Japanese electronics maker has now announced that a remastered collection of Jak and Daxter is headed to the PS Vita as well, which includes Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II and Jak 3. The trilogy's said to be debuting on the PlayStation Vita at some point in June of this year for $29.99 in North America, or a corresponding €29.99 for those located across the pond in Europe. Not too bad a price to pay for some nostalgia-filled gaming sessions, eh?

Sony has released a significant God of War: Ascension update and kicked off a multiplayer double XP weekend. As well as introducing online player stat cards and Elite Levels, which boost the Allegiance level cap from 30 to 40, the update addresses major audio issues and key exploits. The ongoing double XP weekend runs until Monday at 10am PST.Full update notes follow:Overall feature enhancements: - "Elite Levels" - Going Beyond Level 30 - You may be a Champion already at Level 30, but to truly become a legend of Olympus, you'll need to become an "Elite Champion". We've increased the allegiance level cap from 30 to 40. With the addition of 10 levels for every God allegiance, we are introducing a new God item, two new relics, and an ultimate magic for every allegiance, unlocking powerful new abilities. To all Warriors rising to become an "elite" Champion of Olympus, now you have a new goal to reach. It will not be an easy journey.
- Player Stat Card - you can now access various stats about your Champion's performance including kill-death ratio, wins, losses, and more. Access directly from the customization menu.
- Game Mode Inspect Card - in the Game Modes menu, we've added an option that allows you to see the scoring rules for each Game Mode so you understand what each objective is worth when in battle.
- Match of Champions 4-player scoring adjusted to 1600 favor (from 2000) balance match times in line with the rest of the Multiplayer modes. This now makes both 8 and 4 player Favor of the Gods the same 1600 scoring win goal.
Combat:- Zeus Spear now uses correct damage multipliers: L1 triangle special was not correctly using elemental damage multipliers (was using physical instead).
- Global Spear Attacks: Triangle in the air with spear was unblockable, yet could still be parried, it can no longer be parried.
- Poseidon Shield God Item: The shield will now become active when the player recovers rather than while still in the activation animation.
- Adjusted stats of the Hades spear to better suit the intended gameplay.
- Medusa Armor is now slightly easier to acquire.
- The healing amount granted to the player when using the Poseidon Heal Magic will now increase as the magic is ranked up.
- Miscellaneous fixes to slow debuffs/animations not displaying correctly. Will now prevent most related cases where the player would get get stuck in a bad state, and unable to respawn. This is greatly improved, per this fix.
- God ability pickups for new God items now appear in the correct order in the customization menu.
Key bugs addressed:- Spartans no longer stuck in a stoned state when they are hit by the Hammer of Helios explosion.
- Audio - Sound channel output bug: Game now defaults to stereo for all new players. Existing players with preferences set already should double check their in-game sound output options and make sure they are set for the speaker configuration they are using.
- Audio - Addressed issue with music being too quiet in various parts of the game.
- Audio - Addressed sound mixing issues affecting cut scenes and major boss battles throughout Hecaton Level.
- Audio - Fixed a sound mix problem during the cutscene in the Hecaton bordello (outdoor wind sound was playing when you are indoors).
- Audio - Fixed missing sound FX impacting some moves for War Hammer of Ares, Maul of Zeus, Spear of Hades, Blade of Poseidon, Cronos Blade.
- Audio - Music now plays in Trial of the Gods (1 and 2 Player) for Desert of Lost Souls.

While payouts are still pending the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Sony has settled in a class action lawsuit over the PSN hack and outage in 2011. If you were affected by the outage (i.e. if you had a PSN, Qriocity, or SOE account in 2011, and you're in Canada) you can fill out a claim form here.
If you stopped using your PSN account after the hack, you can ask for the contents of your wallet to be reimbursed. If you kept your PSN account and participated in the "Welcome Back" promotion, you can choose an additional game from a list consisting mostly of the "Welcome Back" games, or you can choose three dynamic PSN themes, or half off three months of PlayStation Plus. Qriocity accounts are entitled to one additional free month. SOE accounts can request repayment of wallet balances for no-longer-used accounts, or $4.50 in "Station Cash."
There is a separate claim form for PSN users who suffered losses from identity theft as part of the hack.

PCSX2 SVN r5620 is compiled.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5620
gsdx (ogl):
* Use bigger index for Uniform buffer to avoid any collision with sampler.
* add a new config to disable openGL 4.2 requirement. Would be done at runtime
later.

DualShock 4’s Share button was pitched to SCE bosses by Sony Santa Monica creative director Nathan Gary, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed. As part of a far reaching interview on PS4’s creation – in which he also explained why Knack was revealed first at PlayStation Meeting – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios recalled that the new pad’s headline social feature was pitched after months of discussion about PS4′s social features and implemented into the new DualShock design almost immediately.“After the core hardware, the CPU and GPU, had been decided the project shifted to designing and discussing what should be the user experience of people who be playing games on PS4,” Yoshida told us. “So we formed the cross-functional groups of people from SCEI hardware group and Worldwide Studios and Sony network services teams to meet every month, almost. And Mark [Cerny] was heavily involved and leading some discussions. And the idea of sharing and seamless integration with social networks, that was heavily discussed.”“I think it was [creative director] Nathan Gary in Santa Monica studios who suggested it: how about adding a dedicated button on the controller so that everybody can just press that button to share? He was helping out the external development, heavily involved in helping the development of Journey and Unfinished Swan at Santa Monica Studios.”“So Nathan put together a Powerpoint and pitched in this Share button idea,” Yoshida added. “And we all went, that’s a brilliant idea! So it was a pretty quick decision after he suggested it and I’m sure he’s pretty proud of his contribution. That was after many months of discussion of how people should be using the PS4 system and sharing was one of the central experiences we wanted to include in the system’s development.”You can read more from Yoshida and firstparty studios Guerrila and Evolution in Edge magazine, on sale now. You can buy or subscribe in print, on iPad, on Google Play and through Zinio. You can find out how Evolution Studios influenced the design of PS4′s DualShock 4 pad and why the new console is more than a high-end PC, according to Guerrilla Games, through the links. We also recently published an interview with Michael Denny on the five years’ planning that led up to the PS4 reveal.

The Asian Football Confederation Champions League licence will be present and correct in future versions of PES.
The AFC Champions League will be present as a standalone competition and will include all 32 competing teams.
PES already includes the UEFA Champions League licence.
“The acquisition of such a high-profile license such as the AFC Champions League is integral to our ambitious plans for the Pro Evolution Soccer series,” Konami president Shinji Hirano stated.
“We look forward to a long and successful partnership with the Asian Football Confederation, as we look to bring the passion and skill of the AFC Champions League to vivid life.”
PES 2014 is expected to be released in September or October this year.

Lords of the Fallen will be "a challenging game" - an RPG a bit like Dark Souls but for PC, PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox.CI Games, the company behind Sniper: Ghost Warrior, is in charge, although it's a separate team doing the honours - most of the work is being done by experienced German studio Deck 13.Promisingly, Lords of the Fallen will have been in development for two years come September. "It's a hardcore game, so we spent a lot of time prototyping it," executive producer Tomasz Gop - once the face of The Witcher 1 & 2 - told me at Polish event Digital Dragons. The aim is to get it out at some point next year."It's a challenging game, action RPG, which means a lot of advanced combat," he explained. "When you walk through a location, and you have to fight 10 enemies, that takes around an hour."When you fight in Mortal Kombat, when you fight in Tekken, that's why it takes so long - Dark Souls is probably a strong reference as well. But we've done a lot of things differently. For example, we have a skill tree. I would call Borderlands here, because we're gonna have something like action skills in the game, so classes, stuff like this."I would say Dark Souls, I would say Borderlands in terms of the experience of developing your character."Yes that means trial and error-style gaming, yes that means skill-based gaming and yes that means the game will be hard. It sounds like the next Xbox will be always-online
"What do I think? Very brave, so to speak, decision from Microsoft. Still, the question is whether or not somebody had to do it sooner or later. I'm not personally worried about it myself because as a player it's doable at my home. Even looking at countries like Poland ... there are people who do not have internet, but probably most of them know that it wouldn't even make sense in their case to own a current-gen console, because without the internet you have like half of it [the experience].
"I don't expect it to be that big of a deal, personally. Still, I'm not [an] advisor on that - if it was up to me I probably wouldn't do it so early."
"Yes. Yes. Yes, yes," Gop emphatically stated on that latter point. But harder than Dark Souls? He's not sure, apparently it's a game that needs to be played to be understood. "It's one of these games that feels way better than it looks," he said, "not that it's going to look bad".Not at all; working on a multi-platform PC and next-gen console project has been "way better" than a PC and current-gen project, he said. "It's way more comfortable." And the new machines can achieve more. "The specs are pretty much known," he said. "It's gonna have a lot of things the previous generation didn't have: all those eye-candy elements like DX11, tessellation, anti-aliasing," and at no cost to gameplay."I can't talk too much about the next-gen Xbox," he added, "but I don't think a lot of people [are] going to be surprised. I don't think it's going to be huge news what's inside, no - seriously."He could talk about what 8GB of GDDR5 RAM in PS4 meant for Lords of the Fallen, though. "Way more richer detail on all of the assets," he said. "For example, I couldn't even imagine making a tessellated game on the current generation of consoles. It might even be one of the biggest gaps. And on the next ones [consoles] it's going to be standard, in my opinion. And you just can see more on the screen right now, because it's gonna fit and the memory's gonna be fast."

Quantic Dream, the do-it-differently developer of adult thrillers Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, is "very interested" in the new DualShock 4 PlayStation 4 controller.Heavy Rain used a lot of gesture commands and quick-time events to make a new kind of adventure game experience people other than core gamers might enjoy. Quantic Dream even retro-fitted PlayStation Move controls after the game launched.Quantic Dream was one of the first studios in the world to receive PlayStation 4 dev kits, and has been working on an idea for a PS4 game since the middle of 2012.
The DualShock 4 pad has Move's glowing motion-sensing ability built in, and it also comes with a touchpad - a style of control an ever-spreading audience now understands because of touch-screen iOS and Android gaming."Yes, we're always thinking about the controller," said Quantic Dream chief operating officer Guillaume de Fondaumiere, talking at the Digital Dragons conference in Poland this weekend passed. "In the past we've made several propositions to Sony, who is the console manufacturer, to make sure that the controller is not a barrier to the experience for certain people who are not used to this controller."On one hand, if you think of it, up until now at least, no-one's invented a better interface than a game controller to enable [us] to interact [with] a huge variety of styles of games."On the other hand, we see today the emergence of new interfaces such as the touchpad and you've seen that, for instance, on the new PlayStation 4 controller there's going to be a touchpad-type of system so that you can interact through it. That's very interesting and we're looking forward to designing games that are adapted to a larger audience," he added, "but I can't talk too much about it right now."While in Poland I also asked Thomasz Gop - who worked on The Witcher games and who has been working on a next-gen RPG at City Interactive (Sniper) for two years (more on that soon) - how his game would use the PS4 touchpad."The most obvious thing are the elements that - for example, PC games sometimes took advantage of extra gamer-friendly keyboards with LCD displays. If I'm not mistaken, the touchpad allows you to display things as well, so that's one of the things. Probably a lot of other people are going to be doing user-interface elements on it - it's the thing that comes to mind first. I still don't know 100 per cent of what things are going to be implemented in [his game]."I don't think it's a breakthrough feature, not to disrespect it - it's still very cool."Gop wasn't sure, however, about integrating the light-up part of the DualShock 4 controller in his game.

Tech to help developers model, animate and render trees
Bungie has chosen to use foliage middleware tool SpeedTree into its upcoming science fiction MMO Destiny.
SpeedTree is designed to help developers create real-time trees and plants with "seamless" LOD transitions, as well as offering lighting, physics and wind effects.
The tech also includes an SDK that can be programmed to support any level of engine integration.
“We’re very pleased that Bungie chose to feature SpeedTree in Destiny’s unique vision of overgrown futuristic worlds,” said SpeedTree president Michael Sechrest.
“Bungie had very specific needs and challenges for Destiny, including scalability from current to next-generation hardware. SpeedTree was designed with these sorts of requirements in mind.”

Saints Row IV casts you as the US President, the leader of the free world. Oh, and you have superpowers. It’s at once audacious and strangely inevitable. Audacious because the sheer silliness of the concept is, even by this series’ standards, a step well beyond what’s come before. Inevitable because after Saints Row: The Third so thoroughly explored what was possible within the loosely defined boundaries of a ground- and vehicle-based open-world crime game, there really was nowhere left to turn.“Obviously, after Saints Row: The Third we spent a lot of time thinking about, ‘What do we next? What the heck is Saints Row IV going to be?’” admits Volition senior producer Jim Boone. “We talked a lot about what it is we think makes Saints Row: The Third work. Why people enjoyed the game. What it was we could do even more in Saints Row IV. And the areas that stood out to us the most was, well, number one was the over-the-top nature of The Third. There’s no other game out there like it.”If The Third was the game that saw Saints Row finally exorcise the ghost of its origins as a straight-faced, GTA-inspired gangsta rap video and embrace its new role as a mascot for the dispossessed seekers of cartoon craziness that Rockstar left behind, then Saints Row IV sees Volition confirming that new identity a thousand times over. The introduction of superpowers feels practically belated after everything else The Third managed to squeeze in across its runtime, and enables the series to upstage titles such asInfamous and Crackdown, just as it did its original inspiration. It’s still clearly playing to the gallery, of course, joyfully sacrificing things like coherence, consistency, polish, and genuine meaning in pursuit of quick thrills and cheap laughs. And why not? Volition has found a formula that works.

To share or not to share was never a question for the creation of the PS4 -- it was always more about the how. Right from the start, Sony's upcoming, next-gen console had been planned with a social networking bent, but as Shuhei Yoshida, the company's head of Worldwide Studios, revealed to Edge, the decision to build a Share button into the DualShock 4 was the result of one first-party developer's eureka moment, not a cross-SCEI compromise. All credit is due Nathan Gary, creative director at Santa Monica Studio (best known for its God of War series), who successfully pitched the concept of a dedicated controller button to the PS4 team; an idea that was not only quickly met with unanimous praise, but also immediately implemented into the final product. It's yet further proof that Sony's learned from its past PS3 fumbling and has crafted a machine for developers, by developers.

PS4’s launch line-up will be stronger than any previous PlayStation launch, lead system architect Mark Cerny has stated.Speaking to Gamasutra, Cerny explained some of the new hardware’s systems in detail and said that because PS4 has more accessible PC-style architecture, it’ll be simple for developers to port their games to the system – and that means a surfeit of launch software.“The launch line-up for PlayStation 4 – though I unfortunately can’t give the title count – is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware. And that’s a result of that familiarity,” said Cerny. It takes “weeks, not months” to port a game engine from the PC to the PlayStation 4, added Cerny. He went on to explain how Sony’s Play-Go tech works, which will allow PS4 owners to download games as they’re being played.“So, what we do as the game accesses the Blu-ray disc, is we take any data that was accessed and we put it on the hard drive,” said Cerny. “And if then if there is idle time, we go ahead and copy the remaining data to the hard drive. And what that means is after an hour or two, the game is on the hard drive, and you have access, you have dramatically quicker loading… And you have the ability to do some truly high-speed streaming.”There’s plenty more technical detail in the full interview on Gamasutra. We recently published an interview with Michael Denny on the five years’ planning that led up to the PS4 reveal, and revealed the origins of PS4′s Share button. You can find out how Evolution Studios influenced the design of PS4′s DualShock 4 pad and why the new console is more than a high-end PC, according to Guerrilla Games, through the links.

Activision’s next Call of Duty will be called Call of Duty: Ghosts.
That’s according to a retail listing on Tesco Direct. It could be wrong, of course, but the clearly final product cover image it includes more or less proves its authenticity.
It lists the release date as December 31st – a placeholder, certainly. The game will almost definitely arrive in early November.
The art also named Infinity Ward as the developer. That’s not unexpected, of course – last year’s Black Ops II was a Treyarch title so it’s definitely IW’s ‘turn’. Why the Modern Warfare name has been dropped remains to be seen but could possibly be linked to the out-of-court settlement with former Infinity Ward bosses Jason West and Vince Zampella.
Rumours of the ‘Ghosts’ names were doing the rounds exactly a month ago. Just goes to show that sometimes the whispers are true.

Vita owners are now able to watch YouTube videos on the portable without having to shut down a suspended game. Sony quietly announced the update in a recent Twitter post, "New update for YouTube is coming soon, will enable you to watch videos without closing your other applications."More specifically, the update - which appears to have gone live already - adds background running capabilities to the YouTube app, enabling you to use it without the console forcing you to quit any suspended game applications. This may prove especially useful to gamers who've become accustomed to using YouTube as a vast resource for game guides, tips and walkthroughs.Sony has gradually improved the multi-tasking capabilities of its handheld in recent months, with the Vita's on-board web browser having received a similar multi-tasking update in November last year.Sony recently release Vita System Software update 2.0 which, most notably, added the ability to create Home Screen folders for more efficient app icon management.

Operating income now expected to hit £1.5 billion thanks to sales of US headquarters and depreciation of yen
Sony has doubled its profit forecasts for the year ending March 31st to £260 million.
The revised figure comes after Sony predicted on February 7th that it would generate £130 million.
The firm stated that original forecasts had been based on assumed foreign currency exchange rates for the quarter between January and March 2013, but because of the depreciation of the yen during the period, it expected to exceed previous expectations, reflecting the rise in the Japanese stock market.
Operating income is now expected to hit £1.5 billion, up 77 per cent from the previously anticipated £847 million, thanks in part due to the depreciation of the yen and the sale of Sony’s US headquarters and the Sony City Osaki office in Tokyo.
The revised up forecasts come a year after the Sony products and services division reported a $2.8 billion loss.

April 26th, 2013, 01:08 Posted By: wraggster
When the PlayStation 4 arrives this holiday season, it will boast the best launch lineup of any Sony system to date. At least, that's the claim of Sony's lead architect on the new hardware, Mark Cerny.
Speaking with Gamasutra, Cerny said, "The launch lineup for PlayStation 4--though I unfortunately can't give the title count--is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware."
According to Cerny, the key to that software support is the PS4's hardware architecture, which was designed as a "supercharged PC architecture" to ensure developers would be familiar with it. As a result, porting PC titles to the PS4 will take a matter of weeks, rather than months, the developer said.
"The biggest thing is we didn't want the hardware to be a puzzle that programmers would be needing to solve in order to make quality titles," Cerny explained.
While he's been focusing on creating the PS4 hardware, Cerny is also seeing what it's like for developers working with the system. He is also overseeing creation of the colorful platformer Knack, saying that the experience of actually working on software will help inform his decisions on the hardware.

Codemasters has splashed the cash on its Grid 2 marketing campaign.
The upcoming racer is getting a bumper six-week online ad push, TV advertising with Virgin TV, and activity targeting tablet and smartphone users.
The publisher has also teamed up with 300 Esso garages, as part of a ‘text-to-win’ Rockstar drink promotion.
“We have our biggest UK pre-launch campaign ever and are investing significantly online for six weeks in the lead up to the launch,
across specialist, lifestyle and VOD digital media,” said Hayley Holland, brand director at Codemasters. “Our global placement strategy is to focus on ‘moving media’ - video placement, pre-rolls online and so on. We are letting the game speak for itself.”
Holland added: “We are also embarking on new tactics for Codemasters. The ‘second screen’ as an advertising channel has become more interesting. Data tells us that a majority of our target audience are using tablets and smartphones whilst watching TV. Three-quarters of them are searching online, via these devices, for content different than what is on TV.”
Codemasters’ investment in the campaign will double as of May 31st, once the game arrives at retail.

A translation of a Ukrainian interview with developer 4A Games has suggested that a PS4 version of Metro: Last Light is in the works.
The interpretation, provided by a user on the Metro: Last Light forums, suggests that the game will likely come bundled with its predecessor Metro: 2033.
However, an article on Eurogamer Poland suggests that 4A Games doesn’t even have a PS4 dev kit yet, making talk of the port incredibly unlikely.
At least, that’s what Eurogamer UK’s Robert Purchese says having chatted with the Polish EG team. Our Google translation of the original article gives us the headline “Metro: last Light will receive five DLC add-ons; not excluded the Prime Minister on PS4”. Which doesn’t really shed much light on things.
Whatever the truth of the situation a PS4 release for Last Light certainly makes some sense. The game is a graphical behemoth, with the PC specs claiming that a top-end Nvidia GTX Titan graphics card is needed to run the game at max settings.
Nvidia claims that Titan offers around three times the power found in PS4. Joining some dots and it’s obvious that Last Light could certainly stretch PS4’s tech to offer a great looking title.

The original Katamari Damacy is headed to the US PlayStation Store next week. It'll be released as a 'PS2 Classic' as part of the PlayStation Store's content update on Tuesday, April 30, Sony has confirmed.Katamari Damacy is much-loved Japanese adventure game in which players control a small hammerhead alien who pushes around a sticky ball - or a Katamari - through locations on Earth to pick up every day objects until, eventually, the Katamari is big enough to roll up cars, buildings, and even continents. The game was originally released for the PS2 in Japan and US in 2004. Unlike its successors, it was never released in UK.PS2 Classics are downloadable emulated versions of PS2 games without any updates or changes, and playable only on the PS3.

The publisher has issued a statement to clarify that the words of Metro: Last Light creative director Andrew Prokhorov, recently interviewed by a Ukrainian tech website, were perhaps misinterpreted during translation."It is no secret that 4A Games do want to release an SDK for Metro, finish the extremely promising multiplayer component and release this in some form, and investigate a PlayStation 4 version provided it makes commercial sense," said a Deep Silver rep to Joystiq."Although no development has started on any next-gen console versions [of Metro: Last Light]. We have confirmed these hopes and ideas plenty of times before," they added."However, all these ideas are just ideas at the moment. It will be some time before we can officially commit to any of these projects or suggest when they might materialize. They genuinely might all happen, but equally none of them might happen. Anyone expecting Metro: Last Light as a PS4 launch game is probably going to be disappointed."

Sony has finally enabled the ability to queue PlayStation 3 and Vita downloads from your browser.
Content bought from the SEN Store is now automatically added to your device's download queue. If you have PlayStation Plus, the content will then be downloaded during your device's next regular automatic update. If you don't have PlayStation Plus, your downloads will begin the next time you switch your device on.It's a feature that has long been available to Xbox 360 gamers, but at least Sony has got there ahead of Nintendo - the company has yet to launch a web-based version of its eShop.Sony has a full FAQ on the new feature available from the official PlayStation Forum.

Australian studio Nnooo is working on a new game for the PlayStation 4 and Vita. The EscapeVektor dev announced the news today after receiving PS4 developer approval.
"It's exciting to be developing for a new generation of consoles," said Creative Director Nic Watt. "We're delighted to get early access to PS4 development kits so we can get our games on the console as quickly as possible."
Nnooo says it's bringing the new game to other platforms too, and while Nnooo didn't specify them they'll almost certainly include at least one of the Wii U and 3DS. Nnooo bills itself as a studio making games for Nintendo and Sony platforms, while Business Director Bruce Thomson tweeted this morning its game will head "Nintendo-side" at some point.
"We're still at an early stage of development of our new game," said Watt. "We don't want to announce anything until we are more advanced with the project. Hopefully we'll be able to say something about it around the middle of the year."

Talks of a Soul Sacrifice sequel are already "ongoing" between Sony and Comcept's Keiji Inafune, just a month after the action-RPG hit Japan. In an interview with IGN, Inafune said he'd love to make the follow-up and "drive Vita sales even more."
"Soul Sacrifice is something I specifically designed for Vita using [the] hardware's specific features," Inafune told IGN. "To drive Vita sales even more, I have an idea for a Soul Sacrifice sequel. I'm actually approaching [Sony Computer Entertainment] regarding this project."
"Let's say the talks are ongoing and I'd love to make it happen," he added.
The likelihood of a sequel can only be boosted by SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida retweeting IGN's story earlier this morning.
According to IGN, Soul Sacrifice shifted 150,000 units at retail since being released in Japan on March 7 - that figure excludes digital sales. Of course, Japan is always a bit fond of a monster hunt, so it'll be interesting to see how the Vita game does in the west - and we should find out soon enough. Soul Sacrifice comes out next week in North America and Europe, on April 30 and May 3 respectively.

Here is the first look at the inexplicably popular on Wii but extremely buggy and consequently abandoned and now remade Dance Clone. It isn’t much of a game yet. But I’m a lot more excited about working on it now that I have a fresh start and I’m going to be releasing it for both Wii and PS3 (starting here with PS3). So you can expect updates in the future. I’ll try to even get more done before this months psx-scene deadline (you can already vote for it here).
It controls with the directional buttons. If anyone has a PS3 dance mat (the one that came with Dance Dance Revolution for PS3, a third party mat or even a PS2 dance mat with a converter) then I would greatly appreciate it if you would test it out. I don’t have one and I think it might work but I’m not sure how the buttons on it map or even if it will be possible for me to support them.
It was tested on Rogero’s 4.40 CFW.
Download Dance Clone v0.6
As an added bonus, here is a resigned copy of my game Avoidance that (thanks to z3roblu3′s CFW 4.xx Resigner Script) will now play on newer custom firmware (just like Dance Clone). Though I’m sure somebody else has probably re signed and re posted it by now.

Sony has released PS3 Firmware Update v4.41 via PSN (SEN) which looks like a minor update officially, the usual 'system stability' blurb. I have updated the Ps3OsRels wiki as usual where the updates also can be downloaded. This time there was an incremental update (PS3PATCH.PUP). "

That's it. We're not sure what else you want from us here. You really should just go play the game and prepare yourself for the Lobo DLC that's coming on May 7.

First version of Sony PSP emulator for Android/Windows has been updated. Changes:
- A serious bug was fixed and suddenly a ton of vexing issues just dissappeared! For example, the 3D graphics being black in Persona 3 and the large graphics errors in the two main GTA games. Those are now very playable (on PC, a bit heavy for mobile)! Also, I found a major bug affecting Little Big Planet among others, fixing that as well. The UI now also has multi-language support, it's in Settings->System. All these fixes are enough to motivate a new official release, so here we go - 0.7.6!

Tiger Woods PGA Tour first to feel the affect of EA external cutbacks
Electronic Arts is cutting back on outsourcing, and the move has already affected titles that were due to start development, including the next iteration of Tiger Woods PGA Tour.
Following deep cutbacks across its entire business, EA has made another cost-saving measure by choosing to rein in its outsourcing for game development. One of the EA Sports title that has already been affect it is Tiger Woods PGA Tour 15.
According to Kotatu, EA had planned to outsource development of the game, while its in-house team at EA Tiburon focused on creating PGA Tour 16 for next generation systems.
However, following the resignation of CEO John Riccitello last month, that plan now appears to have been scrapped. The game hasn’t be resigned to any internal EA team for any platform, so is currently on hiatus.
EA has been a major users of outscourcing development to outside studios for many of its franchises, include the The Sims, Need for Speed and FIFA.

Guerrilla Games has revealed a new Killzone game alongside new PlayStation hardware before, and it didn’t go quite so well.Where once we saw ‘target footage’ of what Killzone could be on PS3, at Sony’s PlayStation Meeting in February, we saw Guerrilla’s next gen shooter demoed on stage in real-time, with gameplay footage captured live and uploaded to Facebook there and then.Mindful of what happened before, Guerrilla wanted to do it right this time around. Did this feel like redemption? “Absolutely right,” begins managing director and co-founder Hermen Hulst. “That was one thing where we went ‘Okay, next time around we’re going to be on a stage we’re going to make sure it’s real.’”Guerrilla’s technical director Michiel Van Der Leeuw was similarly keen to remove any lingering doubts over the demo’s veracity. “We actually made a point of not even claiming it was real, it was as a matter of course that it was real,” he tells us. “And I think everybody was onboard with that, there was so much drive for people to make things real. We were working with central in London and the guys in Japan, fixing the firmware to make sure that the Facebook upload would work. It doesn’t get much more real than that.”“We said ‘no back-up videos’ either,” continues Van Der Leeuw. “And we fixed three bugs in the last day that were very, very rare and only happened like once in a hundred playthroughs, but we knew that three of those bugs were in there. So theoretically, there was like a three in a hundred chance of a crash. I was very nervous seeing Stephen playing on stage and a lot of coders here in the Amsterdam office watching live-stream were also really, really nervous. But we made it through.”

They may be the highest rated sports games in history, but EA is never truly happy with its FIFA titles.
FIFA 14 producer Sebastian Enrique says the development studio is always critical about its output, and that this attitude is why the firm, and the franchise, has been so successful.
“We know that everything could be better,” Enrique told MCV.
“That’s our mind-set. Everything can be improved. That mind-set helps us to create a better game year after year. If we were 100 per cent happy with something, we wouldn’t be in this business."
He added: “We are only happy on the day the game is launched. The next day we are grilling ourselves because we want to raise the quality bar even higher.”

No backup videos for Guerrilla to fall back on during unveiling of next-gen game
Killzone maker Guerrilla Games says its reputation has been redeemed thanks to its on-stage unveiling of its latest FPS during the PlayStation Meeting in February.
Upcoming PS4 title, Killzone: Shadow Fall, was revealed to the world as a live gameplay presentation, and, speaking to Edge, Guerrilla said it was glad to redeem itself after its misstep at E3 2005.
Guerrilla’s managing director and co-founder Hermen Hulst said revealing the PS4 Killzone in this way “absolutely” felt like redemption.
“That was one thing where we went ‘Okay, next time around we’re going to be on a stage we’re going to make sure it’s real’,” he said.
When Killzone 2 was unveiled for the PS3 in 2005, by way a of ‘target footage’, its was criticised for being a misrepresentation of what players could expect from the real in-game experience. Since then, its continually been used against the studio by critics and gamers.

Jade Raymond has been heading up Ubisoft Toronto since 2009, and its latest project, Splinter Cell: Blacklist, will be released worldwide in August. Here, we quiz Raymond on whether PlayStation 4 really is easier to work with, if console platforms are losing their relevance and how Ubisoft’s approach to game development is changing. What do you think of PS4 so far? Sony is telling everyone that it is easier for developers to work with, is that true?Yeah, so far from what we’ve seen, it is true. So that’s really exciting and obviously we’ve been talking to them for a while. What’s great is they’ve really made an effort to be close to all the developers and really take their feedback along with the process. Mark Cerny actually came to visit the Ubisoft Montreal studio a couple of times to meet with us in person and have discussions.I’ve known Mark Cerny from being in the industry a long time so it was cool to see him turn up in this new role. He came to the studio was chatting with everyone, gave a talk about what they were thinking and was open to discussing changes where he got feedback on things, so I think that’s a new approach, something we’ve never seen before – first-parties taking that much feedback from the developers. http://www.edge-online.com/features/...platform-game/

Activision has launched a teaser page for its forthcoming Call of Duty game.
The new title is expected to be named Call of Duty: Ghosts, and its reveal is likely to be over the coming days and weeks.
The teaser image on the site features a face similar to the character of Ghost from Modern Warfare 2, and is made up of hundreds of smaller images. The images were submitted by site visitors that connected via social networks Facebook or Twitter.
Call of Duty will be amongst the headline acts due at the end of the year, alongside Battlefield 4, Grand Theft Auto V and the usual Assassin's Creed and FIFA.
