A truly tragic story from Chile today, where a 16-year-old boy has stabbed his own brother to death during an argument over a PlayStation 3.
It’s harrowing stuff, but what gets me is the nature of the dispute. The 18-year-old victim did nothing more than switch the console on, prompting his sibling to obtain a knife from the kitchen and stab his own brother to death. Sometimes, words are not enough.
Police later revealed that the murderer admitted things had “got out of control.” Well, er, that’s one way of putting it. The cops also said the brothers had been abandoned by their mother and lived in care for a decade, before being taken in by a Belgian woman. Sad, sad, sad.
If found guilty, the boy could be looking at five years in prison, where I imagine someone touching his PS3 will be the least of his worries

Namco Bandai has yet another Mobile Suit Gundam arcade game in development, but Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus uses different hardware.
Past Gundam Vs. arcade games were configured for Namco System 256. Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus is made for Namco System 357, the same hardware Namco Bandai used for Tekken 6. Namco System 357 has a Cell processor and the PS3’s RSX graphics processor.
The new hardware should make Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Versus the sharpest installment of the Gundam Vs. series. Also, since Gundam: Extreme Versus uses the same hardware, Namco Bandai could port this game to PlayStation 3. So far, all of the other arcade Gundam games were released for PSP.

PSPgo lets users control PSP games with a PlayStation 3 controller. Nifty, but what if you have a regular PSP? Well, there’s this idea.
Sony Computer Entertainment America kicked around the idea of connecting a PSP directly to a standard PlayStation controller. A patent outlines two ideas. One uses a hinged PSP case locked on a regular controller. Another solution has users plug their PSP into a special controller. Ah, that brings back memories of good old video game cartridges. Both connected controllers give the PSP a second analog stick, a feature developers could utilize if this accessory ever gets released and sells like hotcakes.
Would you buy it?

As with most major children's films, Toy Story 3 will have a licensed video game counterpart, releasing on nearly every platform imaginable -- including platforms from the future. Disney Interactive Studios has confirmed PlayStation Move motion controller support for Toy Story 3.
Like Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition, the game won't offer motion controller support out of the box. The reason? Toy Story 3's release date -- June 15 -- is months before the Move controller is even available. A press release clarifies that "players will be able to download mini-games that will be playable with the PlayStation Move when the new motion controller is available." Excellent, motion controller mini-games! We can't wait!
Until then, PS3 owners will be able to enjoy additional content exclusive to the platform. As with Batman: Arkham Asylum, Sony has secured exclusive rights to yet another playable villain. The slightly less disturbed Emperor Zurg will be playable in the game's "Toy Box" mode, a sandbox mode that allows players to create and play free-form challenges.

Well, they're helpful if you speak Japanese, that is. The latest round of ads for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker out of Japan centers on the escapades of Tom and Dick, two cartoon dudes who really, really like living everyday life as if they were Solid Snake. The duo demonstrate everything from the "heart massage" technique (reviving a downed teammate) to the game's four player co-op functionality, with plenty of goofy animation to boot.
Andriasang noticed the ads over at the "Hamaru Gear Solid" website -- "Hamaru Gear Solid" is the marketing campaign for Peace Walker, based on Hirokazu Hamamura, CEO of Enterbrain (the company that owns and publishes Japanese gaming mag Famitsu), and a pun relating his name to the word "Hamaru" (meaning "to get in"). We've embedded all five for you after the break, should you choose to entertain their sheer madness.

Once again, DRM only hurts legit content purchasers: 'An unusual glitch has angered some Avatar Blu-ray owners. For these unlucky people, since the disc won't play on their Blu-ray players, their new Avatar DVD serves no real purpose other than to sit idly on the coffee table. ... It appears the main culprit concerning playback issues with Avatar is, ironically, the disc's DRM (digital rights management). ... Even with updated firmware, a lot of Blu-ray players weren't prepared for these security measures. Despite the security problems, bootleggers are having a field day. Pirated copies of Avatar, according to Los Angeles Times, were available as early as January.'"
Reader Murpster adds that this problem isn't specific to the Blu-ray version: "Got a regular Avatar DVD and it won't play on either of my DVD players. It will play on one computer DVD drive, if I want to watch it on a 12-inch screen."

April 30th, 2010, 23:28 Posted By: wraggster
The recent class action against Sony and the removal of the Install Other OS feature from the PlayStation 3 highlights a "relatively untested" area of UK and European law, Jas Purewal, a lawyer at Olswang LLP and writer of GamerLaw, has told GamesIndustry.biz.
Purewal's comments were made following the revelation yesterday that Sony faces a class action lawsuit over the removal of the "Other OS" features commonly used to install the Linux operating system on the console.
Sony removed the feature in a firmware update after hackers exploited the option to gain read/write access to the PlayStation 3.
"This case raises questions about whether console manufacturers or retailers should be liable over the removal of features which were marketed to consumers at the point of sale but are removed subsequently," said Purewal.
Amazon UK has reportedly already issued a partial refund after a customer complaint, with the law in Europe placing the onus of liability on retailers.
"This issue is relatively untested in the UK and Europe. Consumer protection is an important part of UK/EU law, which imposes certain minimum legal obligations on retailers regarding the sale of goods to consumers: for example, goods must be of satisfactory quality and must be fit for purpose," said Purewal.
"Consumers could argue that changes to console functionality are a breach of those obligations," he added. "On the other hand, there is an argument that manufacturers should have leeway if the console needs to be modified for genuine reasons, such as security or anti-piracy."
The class action was filed in a North District of California court and so the role of the retailer in the issue is not likely to be a key focus.
"Clearly this matter raises quite complex issues and, if it was litigated in Europe, it would be interesting to see where the courts' sympathy would lie," said Purewal.

Hi guys, this is a port of a windows game called Dink Smallwood to the PSP. It's an isometric RPG originally made in 1997 about a farmer defeating the forces of evil.
This port works better on the PSP-2000 models due to larger RAM, but still works on a phat.
I didn't make this, but the developer doesn't mind me listing this.
You can download it from freedink.org under the downloads for PSP section.
The source code is available as well under the GPL.
The original windows version is available for free from RTSoft.

A teen who bought down a worldwide gaming network has been sentenced to a year's probation and to perform 250 hours of community service.
The kid will also have to write a cheque to Sony for $5,000 in damages.
The teen, who cannot be named for legal reasons , faced four counts for planting a computer virus that caused Sony's gaming Web site to repeatedly crash between November 16-26, 2008.
A report into the kid said he otherwise led a normal life, was a good student and participated in school activities.
1000s of IT Jobs at CWJobs
Search current IT jobs at CWJobs.
Get email alerts as jobs go live!
www.cwjobs.co.ukHowever the whole thing was based on an obsession that the kid had with winning.
Rather than do it in the traditional US way of winning on the sports field or fighting in countries that do not have the same weapons ability, the teen burned the midnight oil playing computer games.
Coppers claimed that the teen crippled Sony's online PlayStation site in retaliation for being kicked off the site for cheating while playing a war game called SOCOM US Navy Seals.
He used hacker tools to contact a botnet and these were directed clog three games on the PlayStation site, causing it to crash and go off-line.
Sony wanted $33,200 in restitution, but the judge ruled that amount would be too excessive for the teen.
