Sony Interactive Entertainment had a strong first fiscal quarter, with a combination of first-party releases and the COVID-19 lockdown boosting sales of PlayStation software.
In the three months ended June 30, 2020, Sony Corp.'s Games and Network Services division earned ¥606 trillion ($5.7 billion) in revenue, up 32% year-on-year.
Operating income for the period was ¥124 trillion ($1.2 billion), up 68% over the same quarter last year.
Hardware was predictably weak so close to a new generation of consoles, with only 1.9 million units of PlayStation 4 sold during the quarter -- down from 3.2 million in fiscal Q1 last year. PlayStation 4 hardware has now sold 112.3 million units overall.
PlayStation's real strength was in software, with The Last of Us Part 2 the clear highlight of the quarter. Naughty Dog's game had sold four million units by June 21, and Sony did not update that figure in its results.
The company's first-party games sold 18.5 million units during the quarter, a significant chunk of the 91 million PS4 games sold overall.

Sony's current PlayStation 4 first-party controller, the DualShock 4 will be compatible with the PlayStation 5, but only for supported PS4 games, according to Sony.
In a blog post today, Sony outlined how accessory and peripheral compatibility would work with the PS5, most notably saying that the DualShock 4 and officially-licensed third-party gamepads would work with supported PS4 games, but not with PS5 games, saying that they believed PS4 titles should "take advantage of the new capabilities and features we're bringing to the platform," including the new DualSense controllers.
Specialty peripherals such as licensed racing wheels, arcade sticks, and flight sticks will work with both PS5 and supported PS4 games, and both Platinum and Gold Wireless Headsets, as well as third-party headsets connecting via USB or audio jack, will be compatible with the PS5.
PS Move Motion Controllers, PlayStation VR Aim Controllers, and the PlayStation Camera will all work with the PS5 for supported PS VR games, though the camera will require a PlayStation Camera adaptor that Sony will provide free of charge to PS VR users.

A spiritual successor to popular Japanese RPG series Suikoden has raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter in less than 24 hours.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes will be developed by Rabbit and Bear Studios, a new Tokyo-based developer helmed by Yoshitaka Murayama and Junko Kawama.
Muruyama is the original creator of Suikoden, while Kawama helped him define the series in its early years and took the helm after Muruyama left the franchise's publisher Konami in 2002.
Eiyuden Chronicle will be their first collaboration in 25 years.
The game's Kickstarter campaign launched yesterday, and within three hours raised its minimum goal of ¥53.8 million ($510,381).
At the time of writing, it has raised ¥159.7 million ($1.5 million) from 14,296 backers.
Eiyuden Chronicle was initially planned for PC, but since the campaign has already reached $1 million, it will also be developed for Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

Ghost of Tsushima sold through 2.4 million copies in its first three days on sale, Sony announced today.
The samurai action game from Sucker Punch is now the fastest-selling new intellectual property from Sony this generation, the company said.
Sony didn't indicate what game Ghost of Tsushima toppled for that title, but 2017's Horizon: Zero Dawn is a likely candidate, having sold 2.6 million copies in its first few weeks on sale.
While it topped the list of original IP, Ghosts of Tsushima still fell far short of the sales of some PS4 exclusives based on established franchises. God of War sold 3.1 million copies in its first three days on sale, while Spider-Man (3.3 million), Final Fantasy 7 Remake (3.5 million), and The Last of Us Part 2 (4 million) all posted progressively higher three-day sales totals.

PlayStation Japan has advised customers to buy the digital version of Ghost of Tsushima, due to the physical version selling out in stores.
A tweet from the official PlayStation Japan account said that Sucker Punch Productions' exclusive title has exceeded Sony's expectations in terms of its popularity.
Enough stores have run out of stock that PlayStation Japan is advising interested customers to purchase the download version instead, or wait for more physical copies to be manufactured.
Ghost of Tsushima has been very well received by critics in Japan. Indeed, as Push Square reported, it is only the third game made by a Western studio to receive a perfect score from Famitsu.
The other two games are The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto 5, which puts Sucker Punch's game in distinguished company. It is also the first original IP from a Western studio to achieve a rating of 40 out of 40.

PlayStation has debuted its first PlayStation 5 ad, which makes the pitch that the next generation is all about how games "feel".
That's been the case since the start with PS5. This new console will be less about how nice games look -- we've been seeing diminishing returns in that department with each passing generation -- but rather how they will sound, how it will feel to use the controller, and how fast it all is.
You saw that in Sony's big PS5 reveal in June, and you can see it in this TV ad, which opens with the line: "Welcome to a world where you can feel more."

Starting today, Square Enix is letting curious players try out the new Marvel's Avengers game before it launches imminently. An open beta is live until August 23rd, and is available on PlayStation 4, PC, and Xbox One, with a free bonus if you do try it out. Those on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One can unlock a Hulk pickaxe for Fortnite, if they link their Epic Games account during the beta. As far as content goes, the beta has four solo missions to try, along with three wave-based HARM Room combat challenges, four War Zone side missions, and five Drop Zones, where you can team up with AI-controlled party members. The full game will be launching early next month, on September 4th.
This weekend SQUARE ENIX® is giving players the chance to get a sneak peek of Marvel’s Avengers for free during the game’s Open Beta, providing budding Super Heroes with a comprehensive hands-on experience with the game ahead of its worldwide launch on September 4.
The Marvel’s Avengers Open Beta will be available from August 21 through 23 for all PlayStation®4, Xbox One, and PC players.
The beta includes four of the game’s single-player campaign Hero Missions, three HARM Room challenges, four War Zones, and five Drop Zones. All of this content adds up to hours and hours of Super Hero action! War Zones and Drop Zones can be played solo with any of the heroes in a player’s roster as AI companions or cooperatively in groups of up to four players.
PlayStation 4 and Xbox One players who link their Square Enix Members and Epic Games accounts and complete the Beta’s three HARM-room challenges will earn the Hulk Smashers Pickaxe with bonus Hulkbuster style in Epic Games’ free-to-play game, Fortnite*.
“Our previous beta weekends have already seen millions of gamers spend tens of millions of hours teaming up and smashing enemies as their favorite Super Heroes,” said Scot Amos, studio head at developer Crystal Dynamics. “We’re really looking forward to opening up the beta to anyone who wants to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC so they too can take the role of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.”
A full infographic on Open Beta start times can be found here.
A Square Enix Members account will be required to play the beta. Players can sign up for the account for free at https://membership.square-enix.com/register. Everyone who signs up for an account will receive a Thor in-game nameplate in the final game.
