At a Tokyo press conference this morning Sony executives apologised for the PlayStation Network outage that has seen the theft of millions of gamers' personal data - possibly even credit cards.
Sony revealed its "Welcome Back" programme designed to reward customers affected by the outage.
Sony will offer "selected PlayStation entertainment content" for free download on a region by region basis. It will announce the content soon.
All existing PSN customers will get 30 days free membership in the PlayStation Plus service. Existing PS+ customers receive 30 days free. Qriocity subscribers receive 30 days free.
Sony promised more Welcome Back "entertainment and services" over the coming weeks as PSN is turned back on. Sony reconfirmed the news that some PSN and Qriocity services will be available this week. Sony will first turn back on gaming, music and video services.
Meanwhile, Sony went into a bit more detail on last week's cyber-attack that rocked the game industry and left personal data tied to 77 million PSN accounts stolen.
Sony has implemented a variety of new security measures to provide greater protection of personal information. Tests have been conducted with third-party security experts to verify the strength of PSN, and the job of Chief Information Security Officer has been created to "add a new position of expertise in and accountability for customer data protection".
The new security measures include:
- Added automated software monitoring and configuration management to help defend against new attacks.
- Enhanced levels of data protection and encryption.
- Enhanced ability to detect software intrusions within the network, unauthorized access and unusual activity patterns.
- Implementation of additional firewalls.
Sony has come under fire for not encrypting personal data, such as passwords. In the UK the Information Commissioner's Office plans to discuss the security failure with Sony to see whether it was in breach of the Data Protection Act.
But Sony has insisted it encrypted credit card information, and this morning stressed that it has found no evidence "at this time" that credit card data was stolen.
Hirai confirmed the number of exposed credit card numbers was about 10 million. Sony is unsure if those card numbers were actually stolen, and it doesn't know if hackers are trying to use them in fraudulent purchases.
Once PSN comes back online, it will force a system software update that requires all registered PSN users to change their account passwords. The password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation.
"This criminal act against our network had a significant impact not only on our consumers, but our entire industry," Sony deputy president Kazuo Hirai said.
"These illegal attacks obviously highlight the widespread problem with cyber-security. We take the security of our consumers' information very seriously and are committed to helping our consumers protect their personal data. In addition, the organization has worked around the clock to bring these services back online, and are doing so only after we had verified increased levels of security across our networks.
"Our global audience of PlayStation Network and Qriocity consumers was disrupted. We have learned lessons along the way about the valued relationship with our consumers, and to that end, we will be launching a customer appreciation program for registered consumers as a way of expressing our gratitude for their loyalty during this network downtime, as we work even harder to restore and regain their trust in us and our services."
Sony is working with law enforcement to track down and prosecute the hackers, it said.

Sony's US PlayStation blog tonight announced that "some PlayStation Network and Qriocity services" will become available this week as the company scrambles to build a new server home in the wake of asecurity breach earlier this month. Though no specific time or date is named, the post lays out a plan to "begin a phased restoration by region" of services "shortly," alongside a mandatory system update for all consoles forcing a change in password, before the full return of services "within this month."
With the return of services will also come a new position at Sony Corporation: chief information security officer, a position that will report to current chief information officer Shinji Hasejima. Additionally, the company says it is expediting an "already planned move" of its data center -- a data center the post claims to have been "under construction and development for several months," despite the attacks having only occurred within the past few weeks. Sony also detailed its "Welcome Back" appreciation program a bit more thoroughly, though it still remains unclear what content the company will be offering in various regions as an apology. The list of known services returning to PSN this week are listed after the break.
- Restoration of Online game-play across the PlayStation®3 (PS3) and PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) systems -This includes titles requiring online verification and downloaded games
- Access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3/PSP for existing subscribers
- Access to account management and password reset
- Access to download un-expired Movie Rentals on PS3, PSP and MediaGo
- PlayStation®Home
- Friends List
- Chat Functionality

News via http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/sony-...trusion-85803/
This morning, Kaz Hirai, Shinji Hasejima and Shiro Kambe held a pathetic press conference in Japan to discuss the current PSN outage. They might as well have played James Brown's classic song "Talkin' Loud And Saying Nothing" for two hours. Here are the "highlights"
In a nutshell, they don't know much of anything about the hack. They estimate as many as 10 million users personal data was exposed but now claim there is no proof any credit card data was stolen.
They are moving the PSN Data Center to a new "more secure" location and created a new position, Chief Information Security Officer, to oversee future security.
They made a point to say that PSN passwords were not encrypted but were hashed.
They hope to have some services re-started in a week and full access restored in one month.
There will be a forced system software update that will require all registered PlayStation Network users to change their account passwords before being able to sign into the service. As an added layer of security, that password can only be changed on the same PS3 in which that account was activated, or through validated email confirmation
They also recommend changing your password on any sites you may have used the same password as PSN on.
Affected users will get a free 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus and an unspecified free software download. Qriocity customers will get an extra 30 days of service.
They will deal with PlayStation Plus members and the contents of online wallets on a case-by-case basis.
You can also cancel your account if you wish.
Many questions were asked about the Anonymous attacks and the possible connection to this case but Sony downplayed Anonymous as a minor annoyance at best.
This same information was repeated over and over for two hours. Sony apparently thinks the more times you repeat the same information the more it sounds like you know what you are doing. Unfortunately, to everyone else, they looked like The Keystone Cops.

Sony Online Entertainment has temporarily shut down Station.com, its online gaming service, following new concerns raised by the PlayStation Network security breach.
An update on the site reads, "In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."
SOE titles affected by the downtime across both PC and PlayStation 3 include DC Universe Online, FreeRealms and EverQuest II.
Last week SOE moved to assure its users that the PSN security breach had little effect on its services.
"We have been conducting a thorough investigation and, to the best of our knowledge, no customer personal information got out to any unauthorised person or persons," said SOE director of community relations Linda Carlson.
"We are continuing that investigation and monitoring the situation carefully; should the situation change, we will of course promptly notify you."
Yesterday Sony announced a series of "welcome back" offers for PlayStation users in the wake of the massive PSN hack that has compromised users' personal details and kept the service offline for more than a week.

Competition from the PSP homebrew New Genesis, this is PSPsych built by developer Monk9899 . The purpose of PSPsych is not clear and even fewer are its possible applications. In fact it is simply a homebrew that generates random results accordingly in a coin toss or roll of a dice. We can then identify it as a programming exercise than a homebrew developer of any use.

News via http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/psn-h...ide-job-85869/
Just days before PSN was "hacked," Sony fired over 200 employees in their online division.
In Sony massive corporation style thinking, once March 31th, 2011 rolls around they decide to get rid of any "dead-weight", in this case, employees they think are "useless" or no longer needed so they can close off the "year-end books" with various "claimed losts" to save corporation taxes, just like any big massive corporation thinks, only for themselves and their "bottom line", not for the little human beings slaving away everyday for their profits.
Like all layoffs that are hard to swallow, this case was a big one, one 1/3 of the staff that worked in the ONLINE division, in all over 200 employees were given their sad "pink slip" 2 week notice, which means they had to work right up until the very dates that Sony had to shutdown the PSN network!
Even tho Sony rented servers from AT&T data center, being the "unmanaged" type, any Sony employee in the SOE dept. would be able to gain access showing their "photo id" badge to do maintenance work on the servers, if they needed more then just "whitelisted" remote server access from their office.
Today, Sony again announce that all the user account "passwords" were "hashed" on their blog, but any key online employee that was layoff could very well have easy access to the needed cryptographic hash function information in regard to any encryption that might have been used on the servers, including CC access for billing and accounting.

Sony Online Entertainment Slashes Hundreds of Jobs, Shutters Three Studios
8:57 PM 3/31/2011 by John Gaudiosi
Sony Online Entertainment has closed three of its game studios and laid off 205 workers as part of a massive restructuring.
All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern."
"SOE will transition development efforts for the Denver and Tucson studios' suite of products to its San Diego headquarters in order to better position SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year," the company said.

Sony Online Cuts Staff By a Third
April 15, 2011, 12:08:32 PM By Rick DeMott
Sony Online Entertainment has laid off a third of its staff, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The move means 205 employees will lose their jobs and the company will shut down offices in Denver, Tucson and Seattle.
Quote:
Wikipedia History Timeline on SOE
On March 31, 2011, SOE has confirmed that "it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios." Production of The Agency has also been discontinued.
On April 27, 2011, Sony, the parent company of SOE, released statements regarding an intrusion, on or about April 18th, into the PlayStation Network, and the potential theft of up to 77 Million subscribers personal data. Sony maintains that PSN and SOE are hosted and run on completely separate subsystems and that the PlayStation Network intrusion had no major affect on SOE's online services.
On May 2, 2011, SOE completely interrupted their online services. Over the previous month several intrusions of PSN have caused the developers to post messages of concern and apology, but also assurances the SOE servers and systems were not compromised. This most recent development has shut the service down entirely with the message: "We have had to take the SOE service down temporarily. In the course of our investigation into the intrusion into our systems we have discovered an issue that warrants enough concern for us to take the service down effective immediately. We will provide an update later today (Monday)."
Even tho some of these employees were in working in remote offices, they could have easy had whitelisted server access to the San Diego HQ to do their daily work, it just seems very strange that suddenly both networks go down after a massive layoff of KEY ONLINE SONY EMPLOYEES when they have to work knowing it is their last days on the job being a lowly paid slave to evil corporation.
Dear Sony, you need to look inside your own organization!

Sony has moved to debunk reports that a list of millions of credit card numbers acquired via last week's PSN breach was offered for sale.
Sony's Patrick Seybold said via the PS Blog: "We want to state this again given the increase in speculation about credit card information being used fraudulently.
"One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list," he said. He also clears speculation that PSN passwords were stored completely unprotected on Sony's servers. "While the passwords that were stored were not 'encrypted,' they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function," said Seybold.
"There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form," he added. He reiterates previous advice for users not to respond to any requests for personal information or PSN details as Sony will not request them, and advises you change any passwords for unrelated services that are the same or similar to the password you used for PSN.
DC Universe Online developer, Sony Online Entertainment, has today shut down its servers over concerns of a possible intrusion.
Sony says PSN will go live "this week".

And the nightmare continues. Following up fromthis morning's server outages, Sony Online Entertainment has confirmed that the information of 24.6 million SOE user accounts could have been stolen.
"Personal information from approximately 24.6 million SOE accounts may have been stolen, as well as certain information from an outdated database from 2007," says an SOE announcement.
It adds: "The information from the outdated database that may have been stolen includes approximately 12,700 non-U.S. credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes), and about 10,700 direct debit records of certain customers in Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain.
Account details leaked include name, address, e-mail address, birthdate, gender, phone number, login name and hashed password. However, from the 10,700 Austria, Germany, Netherlands and Spain accounts stolen, hackers could have also accessed their bank account number, customer name, account name and customer address.
"Upon discovery of this additional information, the company promptly shut down all servers related to SOE services while continuing to review and upgrade all of its online security systems in the face of these unprecedented cyber-attacks," said SOE.
It says emails will be sent to all whose details may have been stolen, and users will receive compensation in the form of play time for the server outages.
"SOE will grant customers 30 days of additional time on their subscriptions, in addition to compensating them one day for each day the system is down," it said. It is also in the process of outlining a "make good" plan for its PS3 MMOs (DC Universe Online and Free Realms).

Company denies claims of hacker's black market dealings; Says passwords were protected
PlayStation Network operator Sony has dismissed claims that hackers who obtained user information from its servers have been trying to sell the data on the black market.
"We want to state this again given the increase in speculation about credit card information being used fraudulently," SCEA's senior director of corporate communications and social media Patrick Seybold stated.
"One report indicated that a group tried to sell millions of credit card numbers back to Sony. To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list."
Seybold also addressed the issue of encryption, assuring users that a certain level of security was applied to their PSN password details.
"While the passwords that were stored were not 'encrypted', they were transformed using a cryptographic hash function," he added.
"There is a difference between these two types of security measures which is why we said the passwords had not been encrypted. But I want to be very clear that the passwords were not stored in our database in cleartext form."
The hope is that some PSN operations will be restored in the next day or two, with a complete return still a little way off.

As the security crisis which racks Sony grows ever more serious, the corporation has been firefighting on many fronts to contain the potential damage.
Firstly, Sony has vigorously denied reports that hackers have attempted to sell the stolen information back to the company.
"To my knowledge there is no truth to this report of a list, or that Sony was offered an opportunity to purchase the list," said Patrick Seybold, senior director of corporate communications & social media on the official PlayStation Blog.
But Sony's woes do not end with the consolation of its customers, governments have also been making their unhappiness apparent.
Following the initial involvement of U.S. senator Richard Blumenthal, a House of Representatives subcommittee has also sent a letter to Sony asking for information about the attack.
The letter is addressed to Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai and asks 13 questions regarding when Sony first discovered evidence of the attack, who was responsible, and what steps it is taking to mitigate the effects of the breach.
The UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has also already indicated it is to quiz Sony over the breach, but it is not yet clear if other government agencies will also become involved.
In Australia the scandal has inspired the federal government to announce plans for a law forcing companies to disclose privacy breaches. Newspaper WA Today reports that 1,560,791 Australian accounts were affected as a result of the Sony attack, with 280,000 credit card details compromised.
Although there is no indication of when the law might come into use, the Australian government has also questioned Sony over their actions and security, with privacy minister Brendan O'Connor commenting that he is, "very concerned" over the data loss.
"Sony isn't alone. We've seen serious privacy-related incidents in recent months involving other large companies," said O'Connor. "All companies that collect customers' personal information must ensure that the information is safe and secure from misuse."

While autonomous quadrocopters are quietly evolving into Hunter-Killers, there's still one who just wants to be your friend and playmate. Meet CrazyFlie, a tiny (so tiny!) chopper you can hold in the palm of your fleshy, human hand. Built by the trio of hackers at Daedalus Projects, on a printed circuit board that weighs just 20 grams and spans eight centimeters, it's piloted using a Bluetooth Playstation controller; the onboard Cortex-M3 CPU keeps it flying stable by monitoring gyroscopes and accelerometers and adjusting rotor speed accordingly. Enjoy its adorable, gnat-like whirring in the video after the break, and the source link includes a detailed build diary for the truly ambitious.

The Collector's Edition of Catherine comes with a pair of pants - take that, serious Sony identity theft saga.
The pants are snazzy polka-dot boxer shorts, as worn by the game's Vincent character during his nightmares. Let's hope the dreams weren't too frightening.
The Collector's Edition - called a "Love is Over" Deluxe Edition - offers a pillowcase, a pizza box and a t-shirt as well. The pillowcase has an "alluring" print of reclining heroine Catherine; the pizza box is stamped with the logo of in-game bar Stray Sheep; and the "Empty Hearts" t-shirt is worn by Catherine in the game.
No European release of Catherine has been confirmed, but in America - where the game is released on 26th July - this Deluxe Edition costs $80. Remember, PS3 games are region-free, so you can import it.
Anyone pre-ordering the Deluxe Edition or the Standard Edition will be given an art book and soundtrack, too.
Stock for both the Deluxe Edition and the pre-order bonuses is limited.
Catherine is an erotic horror puzzle game, as Wikipedia succinctly puts it - dressed in fetching manga-style clothes. And Eurogamer has heard good things about it.

A second class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony in Canada over the PlayStation Network downtime and breach of customers' personal information.
The lawsuit claims damages in excess of $1 billion, which includes having Sony pay the costs of credit monitoring services and fraud insurance coverage for two years.
Announced by Toronto law firm McPhadden Samac Tuovi LLP on behalf of a 21 year old plaintiff Natasha Maksimovic, it names Sony Japan, Sony USA, Sony Canada and "other Sony entities" as defendants.
Mississauga resident Maksimovic said: "If you can't trust a huge multi-national corporation like Sony to protect your private information, who can you trust? It appears to me that Sony focuses more on protecting its games than its PlayStation users."
Last week, one American PSN user filed a lawsuit against Sony over the data breach, alleging that the firm wasn't taking "reasonable care to protect, encrypt, and secure the private and sensitive data of its users".

Sony has said it will answer questions put to the company by the US Congress, the United States' legislature for the federal government, regarding the PSN hack and breach of customers' personal information.
However, SCEA declined to testify at a Congressional hearing about the threat of data theft to American consumers "because their internal investigation is still ongoing", an official in Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack's office told Kotaku.
Earlier this week, a two page letter signed by Bono Mack, Republican of California, was sent directly to PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai requesting answers for a number of unanswered questions concerning the "outside intrusion" of the PlayStation Network.
Sony said in a statement: "Sony is cooperating with the request for answers to the Committee's questions, and in fact will be providing our responses in advance of the [May 6] deadline.
"We informed the committee that we could not appear as early as this Wednesday because of our ongoing intensive investigation and management of this criminal cyberattack."

Sony has enlisted a crack team of cyber-security investigators in a bid to clean up the PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment, both of which have been taken offline following hacks the FBI is also investigating.
According to Reuters, outside investigators from Data Forte have been brought in to work alongside the FBI in a bid to catch those responsible for a data breach that has compromised over 100 million registered Sony accounts.
Cyber-security detectives from Guidance Software and consultants from Robert Half International Inc's subsidiary Protiviti are also assisting with the operation.
Sony said this week it will answer questions put to the company by the US Congress, the United States' legislature for the federal government, regarding the PSN hack and breach of customers' personal information.
Shortly after, the firm was hit with a $1 billion Canadian class action lawsuitover the messy affair.
Rumours suggest Sony is poised to release a new firmware update for PS3 when the PSN comes back online, possibly introducing heavily requested user features such as cross-game chat.

Hobbyists have released an unofficial patch for the PlayStation 3 which adds an enhanced version of the original OtherOS feature, allowing Linux to be installed on the console.
The update is named OtherOS++ and according to hacker Graf Chokolo, "can read/write anything in PS3 RAM" and is "very useful for HV hacking".
The software allows for much greater control of the PlayStation 3's memory and systems than the original official feature and works by exploiting an older version of the firmware.
The OtherOS option was disabled from the PlayStation 3 in March 2010, amidst "security concerns". These followed from infamous hacker George Hotz exploiting the feature to gain full read/write access to the console.
Although OtherOS was not widely used by ordinary users its removal became a rallying cause for hackers and only increased their interest in the PlayStation 3.
In January of this year hacking team Fail0verflow released information on how to completely circumvent the security measures of the PlayStation 3 - citing the removal of OtherOS as the catalyst for their actions.
Other disgruntled users chose to sue Sony as part of a class action in the U.S., while activist group Anonymous often mentioned the feature as a key reason behind their attacks on Sony.
However, there has been no suggestion thus far that the feature is involved in the ongoing PlayStation Network security breach, in terms of either the motivations of the hackers or their means of entry into the system.

A joint statement from Rockstar Games and Sony has claimed that reports of PlayStation 3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire are not due to either the game or the recent 3.61 firmware update.
Previously Rockstar blamed the firmware update for reports of overheats, and claimed that the issue affected other non-Rockstar games. Later that day Rockstar removed these comments, while also admitting of problems with the Xbox 360 version of the game.
The statement issued overnight claims that only a "very small number" of complaints have been received and that, "at this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat."
"We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise," continues the statement - before providing a series of contact details for both Rockstar and Sony technical support.
The series of public statements are unusual in that before they were made there had been little public reporting of the problem, particularly in regards to games other than L.A. Noire.
If the issues are not specific to either the game or the firmware it is unclear why it has only come to light now or whether the underlying problem is software or hardware.

Sony's PlayStation Network store has been given a tentative return date of May 24, almost five weeks after it was taken offline.
That's according to an internal Sony memo seen by Gamasutra, which states that Sony intends to publish two updates every week for the next two weeks to catch up with a backlog of new DLC and games on the store - and rearrange the schedule depending on urgency.
"If there are concerns, we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule," said PSN content manager Jack Osorno. "Adjustments will be made on a case by case basis."
The PlayStation Store is the only major service not up and running on the network since it went back online last weekend.
Multiplayer features, Qriocity and other services have gradually been reinstated to the network, following a hack in which 77 million accounts were compromised.

Uncharted NGP is set before Uncharted 1, Naughty Dog has said.
Last night we reported on a gameblog.fr interviewin which Naughty Dog co-president Christophe Balestra said the game took place between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2.
"Christophe made a mistake. " Naughty Dog community manager Arne Meyer wrote on NeoGAF.
The Sony Bend-developed game is actually set before 2007 PlayStation 3 exclusive Uncharted 1 – but it's not a prequel.
"Bend Studio is really the best bet for any info related to the Uncharted NGP game, but I couldn't help but want to jump in and mention that the NGP storyline is set sometime before Drake's Fortune (and not a prequel)," Meyer said.
"I'll leave the rest for the NGP/Uncharted NGP press campaign."
He added: "Reason we're making the distinction is that it's not a direct lead-in to the story of Drake's Fortune, which many people would expect if you said 'prequel'".
In the gameblog.fr interview Balestra said Uncharted NGP features a different vibe and rhythm than the PS3 games so people can play it in short bursts.
It's the same category of game, but has more exploration and fewer gunfights, letting people breathe while playing.
He also said Uncharted NGP will "most likely" feature interactions with Uncharted 3, also out later this year.
Responsibility for development has been passed from Naughty Dog to Sony Bend, whose most recent effort was the impressive Resistance: Retribution on PSP.
One of the development challenges Bend faces, Balestra said, is working with actors, suggesting the portable version features cinematics akin to those seen in its big brother.
NGP is due out this year.

Fancy stepping into the fantasy world of upcoming action role-playing game Dragon's Dogma for real? No problem.
Ever seen the movie Tron? Well this is nothing like that. But Capcom is offering up a spot for your name to be in the game somewhere.
Presumably as an non-playable character. Maybe as a main character. But probably not.
You'll need to tell Capcom your name, naturally, but made up of the following three parts:
- A modern name, (for example Dave, Brian, or Lesley)
- A "Dragon's Dogmas world reflected name" - something Medieval-sounding (Thelonius, Link, or Geralt)
- Your pet's name (Fluffles, Coco, or Epona)
You need to send a private message to Capcom community manager Fonix via the Capcom forum if you want to take part.
Dragon's Dogma is Capcom's first open world game. The Japanese company has assembled its largest ever development team to work on the new IP, and put Devil May Cry 4 producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi and Devil May Cry 4 director Hideaki Itsuno at the helm.
Dragon's Dogma is being built using the latest version of the MT Framework game engine, which was used to power Resident Evil 5 and Lost Planet 2. Development began two years ago. It launches for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012.

Reckon shooters all feel the same? You're not alone.
According to LightBox boss Dylan Jobe, Sony's own market research revealed a lot of gamers wanted something a bit different from their shooter experience.
One game that could satisfy this need is upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive Starhawk, which Jobe is confident will stand out in the most competitive genre in gaming when it launches early next year.
"Sony, of course they want to sell games and make a lot of money," Jobe told Eurogamer. "They felt there was a place in the shooter genre for something to stand out.
"They had done market research and got feedback from a lot of players that the shooter genre feels the same. At least their data showed that.
"They feel this could be a great way to cut through the noise of the shooter genre."
The shooter genre is the most popular among home console gamers.
November 2010 FPS Call of Duty: Black Ops is the best-selling game of all time. 2011 has already seen two new shooters – Homefront and Brink – launch and find commercial success. Shooters Gears of War 3, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Rage are all due out later this year.
But Jobe reckons Starhawk will stand out when it launches because of its unique RTS-lite element – called "Build and Battle". As players kill enemies and other players they gather resources, spent on calling down structures from orbit and placed down on the battlefield as they see fit.
"A lot of games that have RTS elements suffered from problems because they were RTS teams that were trying to do shooters," Jobe continued. "Sony, I remember in one meeting with the executives, they said, 'You know what's interesting about your approach at LightBox is you're a shooter team trying to bring over some RTS elements, and that allows the soul of your game to still be a fast-paced shooter and not be about management."

A video of FIFA 12 has leaked onto .
The clip highlights the areas of the game that have changed - most at the hands of the new Impact Engine. The improved dynamic physics produce an impression of fluidity and a further step towards believability. But the best bit comes from the unpredictability - and EA appears to be playing on that.
Wild and reckless tackles now send opponents flying. One example shows a Chelsea player literally upended and flipped by an onrushing defender. It's magnificent to behold.
Even better are the arrival of true injuries. A Chelsea player ricochets off a sturdy Arsenal back and lands awkwardly, folding over on his knee. It causes a look-away moment of squeamishness. The Chelsea player stays down, nursing his knee.
In FIFA 12, holding down the polite-tackle button now keeps you at a wary distance from your opponent. You jockey until you're ready to strike. We see a winger cut in-field and run to the opposite flank, tracked dynamically every step of the way by his counterpart.
Players can shield the ball in FIFA 12, shrugging off any flimsy challenges and being awarded fouls for challenges too strong. On top of that, contextual dribbling lets weaving attackers leap wild lunges.
A few tricks are shown during the clip: Cruyff Turns and their ilk being the fanciest on offer. They appear to fit the general ebb and flow of play rather than require extra-curricular button inputs. In one example, Theo Walcott rolls the ball back from a defender as another approaches. Walcott then flicks the ball between the two pairs of legs and escapes.
Dribblers in FIFA 12 can turn fluidly in a large circle but choppily in a small circle. Use precision dribbling and you'll barely deviate from the spot as you tickle the ball around with the outside of your boot.
Shoulder-charging and general argy-bargy have been increased, too.
Improvements to passing and shooting and other areas of the game weren't shown. Should the Impact Engine have the same affect on them, FIFA 12 may feel very different indeed.

Codemasters' forthcoming off-road racer DiRT 3 uses an online pass that enables play via Xbox Live and PlayStation Network as well as unlocking five new vehicles.
Dubbed the VIP Pass, the code is included in all new retail copies of the game and is part of an ongoing effort from publishers to combat the second hand games market.
DiRT 3's VIP Pass comes bundled with a few extra sweeteners on top of the enabling of online play, with a McRae M4, Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 and Hummer H3 among the five exclusive vehicles unlocked by the code.
Eurogamer revved a 9/10 in this afternoon's DiRT 3 review, with some jumped-up prick saying that "it's another great racing game from an outfit that's proving itself to be a master of its craft". DiRT 3 hits shelves - VIP Pass and all - on 24th May.

Sony's apologetic PlayStation Network giveawaymay cause further harm to studios whose games weren't released while the service was offline.
By offering two free downloadable PlayStation 3 games (from a choice of inFamous, LittleBigPlanet, WipEout HD/Fury, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and Dead Nation), Sony may unwittingly be taking yet more attention away from the already struggling-to-be-noticed newcomers.
"The issue is that everyone now gets games for free, so people might just play the free games for a while. By the time they are ready to buy something, Outland is maybe old news," Ilari Kuittinen, CEO of Outland (and Dead Nation and Super Stardust HD) developer Housemarque told Edge Online.
Outland has been released on Xbox Live Arcade already and was supposed to be released on PSN on 26th April. It is fantastic - Outland scored 8/10 on Eurogamer.
A further problem will be caused by Sony's flood of missed PSN content, which is rumoured to be returning in four bi-weekly clumps, starting Tuesday, 24th May.
"As a developer, I feel very sorry for those teams that did try to release their titles during the PSN outage window," an unnamed source confided.
"Beyond that, I feel sorry for those that are attempting to launch games in the days following the outage, as there will likely be such a backlog of traffic that it may be hard to be noticed in the flurry of 'get everything back up and running'."
Seed Studios, developer of Under Siege, also has reservations.
"We are all concerned with the overall situation but we think that despite all the delays and the multiple releases Under Siege will still stand out on its own," commented defiant producer Filipe Pina.
The PlayStation Store was taken down a month ago, on 20th April.

Ratchet & Clank All 4 One will release on 19th October across Europe. That's a Wednesday.
UK releases generally happen on a Friday. So Friday, 21st October? We're checking.
Confirmation comes from the European PlayStation blog. The post there outlines the pre-order goodies on offer: a T-Rex Morph Weapon Mod, flamethrower, Mr. Zurkon hovering ally and Sheepinator Morphy Weapon Mod.
Ratchet & Clank All 4 One focuses on four-player co-op, as the name suggests. You can drop-in and out of co-operative games either online or offline locally.
Mix that into the routinely high calibre of the series and you get "enormous fun", according to Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead - and a game that treats teamwork as a core mechanic rather than as fluff.

In the wee hours of the morning, Sony Computer Entertainment announced a program which could make several of its popular properties even more profitable: A "PSP Remaster" series, which will port select PSP titles to Blu-ray on PS3. The first entry in the series, which has only been confirmed for the Japanese market, is Capcom's bone-collecting action-RPGMonster Hunter Portable 3rd, which will be infused with a booster shot of "more gorgeous and vibrant" visuals.
The series' press release announcement says these PSP ports will be completely compatible with their portable counterparts, allowing players to transfer save data between the two versions, or play with nearby friends using ad-hoc mode on the PS3. The press release also mentions that some games might feature "new add-on content or stereoscopic 3D support" -- however, no other games or North American launch details have been announced. We've got our fingers crossed for some timely E3 elucidation.

Sony Computer Entertainment's dabbled in the Augmented Reality space with titles likeInvizimals and Eyepet, but if a recent Sony press release is any indication, its parent company is investing a bit more into AR technology. The release explains the company's in-development "Smart AR" application, which can superimpose a 3D model on a real-life object without the use of special markers -- rather, the technology can recognize entire objects, such as menus and posters.
In addition to eschewing the usual AR codes required to recognize objects, Smart AR can recognize compatible objects moving at extremely high speeds. Check out the press releasefor a brief outline of the tech's capabilities, as well as an impressive video demonstration. Man, we want that pink bear to walk on everything we own.

After giving PSN proper resuscitation last Sunday, Sony has detailed plenty of measures to win back the loyalty of potentially lost players. This weekend, Killzone 3 players get something more than the sheer pleasure of being able to play a video game online again: double experience until Monday, May 23 at 3AM EST.
Cryptically, the post concludes there is "even more" to be announced "at a later date." By "even more" we imagine Sony means "even more freebies" and by "at a later date" we imagine -- well, actually, that last one's pretty cut and dry now, isn't it?

The PlayStation 3 version of Mortal Kombat is seeing the end of an irksomeTECHNICALITY: the "Kombat Pass," a token that is required for online play but cannot be redeemed while the PlayStation Store is offline, is being temporarily waived. Up until now, the pool of online combatants was limited to those who hastily activated their passes right before the PSN fell into a coma in late April.
Writing on Mortal Kombat's official Facebook page, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the game's online component should now be unlocked for all players, though it'll be cordoned off as soon as Sony re-opens the PlayStation Store (possibly by next week). The Kombat Pass code is included with all new copies of Mortal Kombat, and can be purchased separately for $9.99 once a free trial period expires.
If you own a used copy of NetherRealm's well-received revamp, you now have an entire weekend to gauge the value of pulverizing pelvises over the internet.

A Sony website in Thailand has been hacked and virtual points stolen in Japan, as the company suffers two new attacks - although the PlayStation Network itself has not been affected.
A link to a fake site purporting to be an Italian credit card company was added to the Sony website, with the hackers attempting to trick customers into revealing card and personal information.
The incident was proceeded by a separate attack on Thursday, with Sony's So-Net Internet service provider revealing that hackers had infiltrated their system and stolen ¥100,000 ($1,225/€875) worth of "virtual points" from account holders.
"What we've done is stopped the So-Net points exchanges and told customers to change their passwords," said So-Net in a statement.
"At this point in our investigations, we have not confirmed any data leakage. We have not found any sign of a possibility that a third party has obtained members' names, address, birth dates and phone numbers," added the company.
The incidents are the most serious since attacks last month that compromised up to 100 million PlayStation Network and Station.com accounts. Although some PlayStation Network services have now been restored the PlayStation Store is still out of service.
"Sony is going through a pretty rigorous process and finding the holes to fill," said Josh Shaul, CTO for computer security firm Application Security in a Reuters interview.
"The hackers are going through the same process and they're putting their fingers in the holes faster than Sony can fill them," he added. "I think it's now 'I'm a hacker and I'm bored, let's go after Sony.'"

A new range of HD updates for key PSP titles on the PlayStation 3 has been announced in Japan, although the only game so far confirmed is Capcom's Monster Hunter Freedom 3.
The PSP Remaster series is conceptually similar to the existing HD Classics line on PlayStation 2, with PSP titles being upgraded to high definition and receiving improvements to the complexity of key character models and textures.
Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. will be launched as a standard retail release in Japan, with Sony implying that it also has plans to release the PSP Remaster line in the West.
Capcom's game will also feature compatibility with PlayStation 3 controllers, include new "add-on content" and support for stereoscopic 3D. Saved data from the original PSP version will also be compatible with the new PlayStation 3 game.
Online play for the game will also be supported via the existing adhoc party for PlayStation Portable software on PlayStation 3. Sony has indicated that not all games in the line will necessary enjoy all these options as standard.
Although Sony has not confirmed any additional titles for the PSP Remaster line, games in the HD Classics range have included first party titles such as God of War and Sly Racoon, as well as third party franchises including Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider.

Sony Corporation has warned that the PlayStation Network breach is to cost the company approximately ¥14 billion ($171.2m / £106.1m) by the end of the 2012 fiscal year.
The company was forced to close down its PSN online service last month after hackers compromised data of over 77 million user accounts. Later, Sony Online Entertainment's website was also hacked, bring the total number of breached gamer accounts to over 100 million.
"Based on information currently available to Sony, our current known costs associated with the unauthorised network access are estimated to be approximately 14 billion yen in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012," the company told investors today.
Furthermore, Sony predicted a net loss for the entire 2011 financial year of ¥260 billion ($3.1 bn / £1.9bn) - compared to expectations in February that the company was on track to record a profit of ¥70 billion, blaming a write-off due to deferred tax assets.
For the full 2011 financial year Sony expects the Japanese earthquake and tsunami to wipe ¥17 billion from operating profits, and a further ¥150 billion from the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012.
Despite that, Sony said it anticipates a return to profitability in the 2012 financial year.

Sony's Networked Products and Services division, which includes the PlayStation business, recorded an operating profit of ¥35.6 billion ($435.3m / £266.9m) for the 2010 financial year, up from the ¥83.3 billion loss for the previous year.
The company highlighted improved software sales for the system, as well as reduced costs on PlayStation 3 hardware for the increase. Sales in the division only increased marginally to ¥1,572 billion ($19.2 bn / £11.7 bn).
During the year, Sony sold 14.3 million PlayStation 3 units compared to 13 million, 8 million PSPs compared to 9.9 million, and 6.4 million PlayStation 2 consoles, compared to 7.3 million for the 2009 financial year.
Software sales for the PlayStation 3 was up significantly from 115.6 million to 147.9 million, with PSP game sales also up from 44.4 million to 46.6 million. PlayStation 2 game sales dropped from 35.7 million units to 16.4 million.
As warned earlier in the week, the Sony Corporation as a whole made a significant loss during the full financial year of ¥256.9 billion ($3.14bn / £1.92bn) primarily due to deferred tax assets.
Sales were ¥7,181 billion ($87.7bn / £53.8bn) for the full financial year, a drop of 0.5 per cent compared to 2009, with operating income of ¥199.8 billion ($2.4bn / £1.4bn).
The company has warned that in the current fiscal year, it expects the cost of the PSN breach to hit approximately $170 million.

May 27th, 2011, 00:44 Posted By: wraggster
Sony executives have confirmed that a portion of research and design costs for the fiscal year are set aside for the development of future games platforms.
Also noting that the company is spending on the forthcoming NGP handheld, chief financial officer Masaru Kato said development is already underway on hardware that will succeed the current PlayStation 3.
"We have a portable, NGP, to be launched later this year, so we have development expenses to be incurred for this product. And for the home equipment, the PS3, this still has a product life, but this is a platform business," he said.
"So for the future platform, when we will be introducing what product I cannot discuss that, but our development work is already underway and the costs are incurred there."
It's the first official acknowledgement that Sony is researching and prototyping future hardware, although what format it will take and a timeline to completion is not known at this point.
However, it contradicts Sony boss Kaz Hirai's statements from March, in which he said that the company was not even debating any near-future home console while the PlayStation 3 is still selling so well and only half way through its intended 10 year lifecycle.

Sony has confirmed that it has already begun development on PlayStation 4.
The company's EVP and chief financial officer Masaru Kato told a conference call today that work on the system is "already underway".
He revealed that production resource was factored into costs for the company's full year financial results, which were released yesterday.
"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said.
"But this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product, I cannot discuss - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."
The head of Sony's global games development team, Shuhei Yoshida, said last year that the firm expects Microsoft and Nintendo to launch their 'next-gen' home systems before the new PlayStation arrives on the market.
"Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move," he said. "Or, because Nintendo's approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware - Wii doesn't even support HD resolution - so they might be the first to move.
"Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan."
PlayStation 3 launched in Japan and the US in November 2006, but didn't reach Europe until March the following year. According to Sony, the system has sold over 50 million units to date.
Nintendo's Wii hit shelves in the same month in the US. Nintendo has confirmed that it will unveil its new home console - reportedly dubbed 'Project Cafe' - at E3 in two weeks' time.

Sony has downgraded the specs of its PSP successor, codenamed NGP, so that it can be priced competitively against the 3DS.
That's according to French site 01.net (via 1Up), which has an uncanny knack for leaking accurate Sony information (particularly regarding the NGP). The site claims that Sony intends to release the NGP in Japan this year and the rest of the world next year. It says the firm aims to price non-3G models of the portable competitively with the 3DS, which launched in UK for £229.99 and in US for (a far more attractive) $249.99.
In its decision to play hard ball with pricing, however, the report claims that Sony's had to make some downgrading revisions to the hardware specifications it originally gave to developers. On board RAM and VRAM have apparently been cut in half to 256MB and 128MB respectively.
The consequences of such a change will apparently not be too significant especially, it says, if the access speed for the machine's external memory card is fast enough, although Sony has apparently had to reduce the size of the console's operating system to save space, and 26MB of RAM will reportedly be available for functions that require quick access.
The site also reports that Sony has scrapped plans to include 16GB of internal storage, instead opting to use external memory cards exclusively for storage. Early NGP dev kits apparently features a memory card slot that suggested a new format of memory card designed to provide mass external storage for the device, similar in architecture to SD cards.
Sony is expected to spill all at E3 in less than two weeks, its press conference set for June 6.

Both White Knight Chronicles II on PlayStation 3 and White Knight Chronicles: Origins on PSP go on sale in the UK and Ireland from 10th June, publisher Sony has announced.
Australia and New Zealand get them on the 9th June and other PAL territories on the 8th.
Developed by Level-5 and first released in Japan back in 2009, Chronicles II picks up from the solid 2008 original.
A 30-hour campaign, redesigned combat and online co-op for six people are all promised.
Matrix-developed Origins on the PSP provides a little backstory, set 10,000 years before the original game. Again, there's a 30 hour campaign to wade through, as well as four player co-op.

Infected Nathan Hale skin: By skipping his viral inhibitor treatment throughout Resistance 2, Nathan Hale fell victim to the deadly Chimera virus. Now you can resurrect the fallen hero with this special multiplayer character skin.
Air Fuel grenade: Equip Joseph Capelli with an explosive advantage as he embarks on his journey across America. This exclusive grenade releases a cloud of highly flammable vapour, creating a huge blast when ignited – perfect for taking out hordes of Chimera in tight urban spaces.
Special multiplayer title - "Sentinel": Pledge your allegiance to the elite unit of the SRPA – the Sentinels – with this multiplayer title, exclusive to pre-order customers.
Multiplayer booster - Get an early advantage on the multiplayer battlefield by starting the fight at level 5 – and gain access to a range of character and weapon customisation options.
Chimera tooth necklace: Show your support for the resistance by wearing Joseph Capelli's Chimera tooth necklace.
On top of all that lot, Sony has also announced two special editions of the game. The standard special edition comes with all the add-ons listed above, a steelbook case and 'vinyl effect' blu-ray disc.
The Survivor Edition adds in a canvas satchel, a Chimera firing range target poster, "Fight for Freedom" toy soldiers, Joseph Capelli's journal, an SRPA hip flask and SRPA playing cards. No word on a price yet, but that lot sounds expensive.

If you still haven't given in to your hankering for a PlayStation 3, you might want to check out this promotion Sony is teasing. The company just announced a limited edition PS3 bundle pairing Call of Duty: Black Ops with a 160GB console. For $299, Sony's also throwing in the First Strike content pack -- not too shabby, considering that's the standard price for a bare console. Depending on your proclivities, that may or may not trump a complimentary RC toy or Michael Jackson singalong, but if you've got a taste for first-person shooters, it should be right up your alley. First-time buyers can find it next week, starting on May 31.

The hackers just won't give poor Sony a break, will they? Following the infamous PSN breach last month and an attack on the company's Greek online music service earlier this week, Sony Ericsson has now seen another intrusion that extracted personal data of more than 2,000 Canadian Eshop customers. Fortunately, the company claims that passwords taken were encrypted and no credit card details were lost, but this is still worrisome nevertheless. Right now, the Eshop service has been taken off line -- for the sake of Sir Howard and his Japanese chums, let's just hope that this will be the last Sony breach we hear about.

Tech downgrade rumoured for the upcoming handheld console
The successor to the PSP will have its memory capacity halved as part of Sony’s bid to cut retail prices, a new report claims.
An unconfirmed rumour in circulation suggests that the NGP will come packaged with 256MB of RAM, as opposed to the 512MB flaunted by Sony when the device was first unveiled.
Sony has been guilty in the past of overpowering their consoles at the expense of the customer.
A spokesperson for the firm declined to comment when contacted by Develop.
A French news website is suggesting the sizable reduction in RAM will impact on the handheld’s retail price – allowing it to better compete with Nintendo’s 3DS.
The source of the rumours, website 01net, has in the past month staked its long-term reputation on a string of explosive rumours. However, many of these rumours have withstood the test of time without challenge.

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Network will finally come back online in Asia from Saturday, May 28, as the PlayStation Store prepares to return in Europe.
The return of the PlayStation Network in Japan and other Asian territories has faced legal problems not evident elsewhere in the world, with the Japanese government demanding specific reassurances from Sony before allowing it to return.
According to a report from Andriasang these issues have now been resolved and the PlayStation Network and Qricoity services will return in Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malasia, Indonesia and Thailand.
As in the West users will be forced to change their passwords when they log in, but they will also be able to download free games as part of a Welcome Back program for both PlayStation 3 and PSP.
Sony will also give all PlayStation Network owners 30 days of free PlayStation Plus access, as well as 30 days free Platinum membership of the Japanese Weekly Toro Station news app.
Users will also receive free personal space for PlayStation Home and free video rentals, although all of the Welcome Back gifts are dependent on the return of the PlayStation Store - which is not yet available again in any country.
Sony has previously indicated that all online services, including the store, will be back online by May 31. Although this has not been confirmed, PlayStation Network maintenance is currently scheduled in Europe between 19:00 GMT on May 31 and 01:00 GMT on June 1.
During these times network services will still be available if already logged in, but account registration and management will be taken offline.

May 28th, 2011, 00:31 Posted By: wraggster
Sony emperor Howard Stringer wasn't aware that in 2008, there were three separate attacks on PSN by hackers. In one of them, PSN data was compromised.
Was the writing on the wall?
Howard Stringer told Bloomberg he thought Sony had "good, robust security". He also expressed incomprehension about the April 2011 attacks and why someone would want to attack a free service.
"It didn't seem like the likeliest place for an attack," he said.
"Obviously our network security didn't stop the attack and we're trying to understand why, and we've made big strides in bolstering our security."
More than a month later, Stringer reflects on an incident that will shape Sony's future - but at first he had no idea how serious the situation was.
"I really don't think I could apologise for not knowing," excused Stringer. "It's a whole new experience for everybody at this scale."
A Sony spokesperson said the April 2011 attacks and the 2008 breaches were "unrelated"; the latest, headline-dominating intrusion was "much more sophisticated".
In March 2008, PSN personal information was compromised. Sony told PSN users that no credit-card information was jeopardised and the security flaw that let the hacker in was fixed.
Dan Race, Sony spokesperson, added: "The truth is that people test for vulnerabilities on network systems on a daily basis, and Sony is constantly monitoring for unauthorised activity, conducting our own vulnerability tests and making constant enhancements."
Some elements of the PlayStation Network service have returned, like online gaming. However, the PlayStation Store virtual shop has not. Sony was rumoured to be reviving the Store this week, but dismissed that chatter recently while airing an "end of May" target.

Sony has announced planned PSN maintenance for this coming Tuesday, 31st May.
The service will be offline from 7pm that evening until 1am Wednesday morning, wrote Sony Community Team member "RabidWalker" on the European PS community forum.
During that time you won't be able to use:
PC Registration
Console Storefront
PS3 Account Management
PS3 Network Account Registration
PSP Network Account Registration
Qriocity Account Management
However, if you're already signed in you will stay connected. You won't be able to use the above services, though.
The post doesn't mention PlayStation Store. Will the PS3's virtual shop finally re-open on that day?

Sony CFO Masaru Kato told investors this week that the company won't be looking to put the same kind of massive R&D into PS4 as they did with PS3. PS3's costs were astronomical because of Blu-ray and the Cell chip, but Sony's bottom line can't take another similar hit. Analysts are speculating that this will leave the door open for competitors like Microsoft. 'PS4's hardware could be less impressive than the PS3 at its launch. I think Microsoft will really be able to put the screws to Sony in the next console war,' Panoptic analyst Asif Khan commented to IndustryGamers."

Potty-mouthed Wii shooter House of the Dead: Overkill reanimates on PlayStation 3 later this year.
Sega has announced an Extended Cut edition will premiere on 28th October in the UK, just in time for Halloween.
The original featured co-operative zombie-blasting gameplay with Grindhouse-style B-movie visuals, set across seven levels.
The Extended Edition adds two more stages, with 3D support, Move control and Trophies completing the upgraded package.
House of the Dead: Overkill Extended Cut.
Overkill's punchy, self-parodying script once held the record for the most naughty words spoken in a video game - until Mafia II absconded with the honour last year.
"It's made with such infectious and irreverent glee and such obvious pride, you can't help but join in," said Oli in Eurogamer's 8/10 House of the Dead: Overkill review.

It took a while, but that O2-exclusive (for the UK) white Xperia Play is finally with us. Earlier this month, the UK carrier had promised to deliver the Play in June, but evidently things have gone better than expected, as we now see "in stock" signage next to both the black and white models of Sony Ericsson's gaming phone. Pricing is identical for both color variants, starting at "free" when attached to expensive (£34 per month) two-year contracts and peaking at £430 ($702) on pre-pay deals. O2 also throws in a matching multimedia dock plus three bonus games to sweeten the deal. We're guessing that Android 2.3.3 update that Sony Ericsson just rolled out for the Xperia Play might finally have allayed O2's software concerns, which has allowed it to now start selling the device in earnest.

Well, Sony Ericsson might just deserve a gold star for effort. A week ago we reported that a possible rollout of the long-rumored Facebook integration update would come to select Xperia series phones this week, and we're seeing the process begin today. The recipients of this particular push are the Arc and Play, though it will come to all new Xperia devices down the road. While the download includes Android 2.3.3, the major focus is on "Facebook Inside Xperia," another way for you to sync your social media with other aspects of your phone, such as contacts, calendar, and photo gallery. Other improvements in the package include WiFi stability, improved battery performance, HD video recording performance (Arc only), and bug fixes. Don't stress if your phone hasn't seen the update yet; Sony Ericsson says it's rolling it out gradually due to issues with individual markets and carrier branding. No specific timeframe was given, though the company mentioned that "it can take a while." Should you be one of the lucky recipients to get it today, however, sound off in the comments below.

Following Sony's announcement of the PSN data leak, Congress sent an inquiry to the company seeking more information about the breach and Sony's response to it. And Sony responded to that with ... an open letter.
Now Sony Network Entertainment president Tim Schaff plans to make an actual, personal appearance before the House subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade, to discuss follow-up questions sent to the company by Representative Mary Bono Mack. The questions speak to the nature of the stolen data, the method through which it was stolen, and how Sony plans to keep data safe in the future. Schaff will be joined by a representative from Epsilon, a marketing company who suffered its own recent data breach.
We're guessing the members of the subcommittee will all have their "Welcome Back" copies of InFamous hand-delivered.

The remastered Splinter Cell Trilogy for PlayStation 3 looks to have been pushed back to August, according to several retailers. Amazon, GameStop and GameFly (which conveys release date information only when received from publishers) each list the title with an August 2 release date.
After missing its initial March ship date, Splinter Cell was due to arrive in stores and on PSN in late June. When we asked Ubisoft to confirm a ship date, we were told, "We currently do not have a ship date for it. It will be sometime this summer.

Sony has announced that its PlayStation Network is now back online in Japan after over a month of down time.
A full statement from the company was released last night, alongside a new video from PlayStation global boss Kaz Hirai. Both can be read/watched below:
Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will begin a phased restoration of PlayStationNetwork and Qriocity Services in Japan and Asian countries and regions including Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand*1 on May 28. A new identity protection program will also be offered in conjunction with the phased restoration for PlayStation Network and Qriocity customers in Japan.
Increased Security Measures
Working closely with respected outside security firms, the company has implemented new and additional security measures that strengthen safeguards against unauthorized activity, and provide consumers with greater protection of their personal information.
The company has made considerable enhancements to the data security, including updating and adding advanced security technologies, additional software monitoring and penetration and vulnerability testing, and increased levels of encryption and additional firewalls. The company also added a variety of other measures to the network infrastructure including an early-warning system for unusual activity patterns that could signal an attempt to compromise the network.
As an additional measure, a Chief Information Security Officer was created at SNEI who will work to reinforce overall information security across the company's network infrastructure.
"I'd also like to send my sincere regret to customers in Japan and Asian countries and regions for the inconvenience these events have caused you," said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. "We are taking aggressive action including increasing security measures and working with respective authorities to address the concerns that were raised by this incident. We are making consumer data protection a full-time, company wide commitment so that our customers can rest assured about enjoying their entertainment."
The first phase of restored services for these countries and regions will include:
* Sign-in for PlayStationNetwork and Qriocity services, including the resetting of passwords
* Restoration of online game-play across PS3 and PSP
* 'Friends' category on PS3, including Friends List, Chat Functionality, Trophy Comparison, etc
* PlayStation Home
* Access to other network features on services such as torne*
(Customers will not be able to download movies rented through PlayStation Network video download service because movies have expired as a result of PlayStation Network service being turned off since April 21 (JST).) **
* torne is a service available only in Japan.
** Please contact customer support if this is the case.
*** PlayStation Store, Video on Demand Powered by Qriocity service for Japan and any service that involves transaction is not available at this time.
Identity Protection Measures
While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, the company is committed to helping its customers protect their personal data and is continuing to work with several security firms to determine the extent of customer data which may have illegally been taken following the criminal cyber-attack on PlayStation Network and Qriocity services in April. Also credit card companies have not reported any increase in the number of fraudulent credit card transactions as a result of the attack, nor have they reported any fraudulent transactions that they believe are a direct result of the illegal attack.
* In addition to the existing customer service call center, SCE has established a phone hotline to offer customer guidance on the restoration of services, or measures to protect themselves against identity theft and fraud (operating hours: 9AM to 7PM*3).
* With the support from credit card companies, SCE will bear the expenses to reissue new credit cards to those customers who request to replace their existing credit cards when it involves charges.
The company will be offering a "Welcome Back" package of services and premium content to all registered customers. The details of this program will be announced in each region shortly. For details on Japan, please refer to the separately attached sheet or visit: http://cdn.jp.playstation.com/msg/state.html
Details on Asian countries and regions will be announced shortly.
*1 Service restoration in Korea and Hong Kong will be announced as soon as ready.
*2 Measures are subject to change depending on the finding from the investigation.
*3 Opening hours once part of the PlayStation Network service resumes. SCE will extend its normal operating hours of 10AM to 6PM.

After brutally taunting us by releasing the job-centric RPG in Japan and announcing it for Europe, an ESRB rating has revealed that Square Enix is bringing Final Fantasy V to the North American PSN. The game is something of an oddity for the series, having never made it to the U.S. in its native SNES format -- it only came stateside as part of the Final Fantasy Anthology, and as the expanded GBA title Final Fantasy V Advance.
Between this, Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, we've got a lot of Square Enix PSOne Classics to look forward to -- now we just have to wait for the PlayStation Store to fling open its long-shuttered doors.

Development has been progessing quite nicely on [Matlo's] PlayStation 3 controller spoofing project. This is a package that allows you to identify a PC as a PS3 controller. We know what you’re thinking: why would you want to do that? When we originally looked in on the project about a year ago we mentioned that this allows you to use any Linux-friendly peripheral as a PS3 controller. In the clip embedded below you’ll see that nothing beats a good keyboard and gaming mouse when it comes to first-person shooters. [Matlo's] solution not only allows you to use alternative control hardware, but there’s almost unlimited configurability.
And speaking of configuration, he’s done a ton of work on the GUI. After the initial package installation no terminal typing needs to be done to get the system configured. Once in place, you can set the MAC address of a Bluetooth dongle to spoof the address of your SixAxis controller. From there you can set up the button mapping, calibrate mouse hardware and the like, and even program macros (fantastic). Now go out and pwn everyone at deathmatch now that the PlayStation Network is back up and running.

News via http://dknute.livejournal.com/38217.html
So... SONY manages to have their PSN data stolen. And not just any data - the most sensitive kind, their customers' personal data. SONY calls that a high-profile malicious attack but in reality their system had gaping security holes. Known vulnerabilities were not patched for months. Very proffesional, let me guess, it was all outsourced to cut the costs?
How bad is it? So bad that they don't even know WHAT was taken since the logs were compromised as well. Because SONY not only failed to run a proper server stack, they failed to setup a logging system that would run independently. Apparently if it wasn't for the attackers clumsy attempts to cover their tracks, nobody would even know the intrusion took place!
To add insult to injury I was away from country as it got reported and could not block my card or else I'd end up with no money to pay bills and return home...
Words fail to properly convey my feelings about this, I'll try though. Let's start with PSP - it got hacked, with a spoofed "service battery" of all things. Way to include a backdoor into your secure product, guys. Just brilliant. PS3 - got hacked with a stupid buffer overflow in USB layer, again with the help of a backdoor system known as "service JIG". Then it got owned completly because SONY decided to use curve-based crypto rather than the usual RSA-like system, and nobody understood the new algorithms well enough to actually use them properly. I was laughing so hard when this was published... And what does SONY do? Blame the hackers.
Next thing SONY fails at is running a secure database with all of their clients data. And not just PSN, apparently the SOE one was raided too. You couldn't do worse if you tried. Hell, SONY might have as well just copied and send out the data themselves - at least that way we wouldn't have to endure a lenghty downtime of their services. But wait, that's not all of it yet. Now they got their collective asses moving and decided to actually upgrade the Apache to the latest version - and maybe (though doubtful) to keep doing that from now on. And with the claim that it's secure now they made it into grand reopening. Some lesser CEO even apologized. Wow. It would be much more impressive if not for another exploit that was discovered, what, less then 24 hours after the restart? This seems to be the extent of their new security - they just can't code shit, even if their lives depended on it.
Also, as it turns out, Japanese government is not happy with the way SONY handled the situation and forbid PSN reopening until all the issues are properly resolved, and explanations are made as to what steps were undertaken to prevent this mess from happening again in future. Now, this might just be a political struggle but it does kinda make you wonder just how secure this "new" system really is. It sure bothers me.
We are talking about 100 million accounts, this is THE BIGGEST data leak in history. Ever. SONY fails time and time again, and there seem to be no consequences whatsoever. I'm really unhappy with EU and USA authorities not demanding formal apology and proper compensation. I suppose the unnamed hackers will again take all the blame, since apparently big companies can do no evil. Nobody died, right? Move along folks, nothing to see here.
Oh and don't get me started on the Welcome Back Programme - it's just as insulting as the half-hearted apology. Rather than get a wallet bonus or something to the effect, we are given old games that many already have. And this is no accident, SONY knows well what games we have and play (via PSN reports) so this way they just pretend to give us something without actually investing too much money. Think of it this way, you just exchanged all of your personal data, including possibly credit card info, for 2 lousy games and 30 days of PSN+. Was it worth it?
I'm pretty sure kids won't mind. When you're 16 or so, what do you care who knows what your name and date of birth is. But proper adults should realize the potential consequences of identity theft. I've seen it happen to someone who had ID card stolen and let me tell you - it ain't pretty. First of all it won't hit you right away, usually takes months, but then it will haunt you for many months to come. And there is nothing you can do about it, except work hard to clear your name. In the meantime it's quite possible you'll be visited by debt collectors asking for money you never had, and even receive threats from people who think you owe them. Banks might lock your accounts every now and then, your cards will stop working due to all the stuff happening, and so on. And the worst thing is you know none of this is your fault. Welcome to your personal hell.
I won't ask anybody to boycott SONY. You do what you think is right in that situation. I will probably keep using my PS3 since the milk is spilt and nothing will change that. I sure won't enter my card detais into the console again, though, and if there is anything interesting on PSN then I will look for alternative payment methods. That's assuming I will feel like buying from SONY anytime soon. I'm simply not going to trust that company with anything, ever again. Because, let me repeat that one more time, not only they can't protect my data, they don't even feel like compensating me for my loss. So, I don't feel like spending my money on their products.
EDIT: And this just in, though still not properly confirmed: It seems that firmware 3.61 causes some of the consoles to overheat and turn off while playing. Seriously SONY, I couldn't come up with this stuff if I tried.

A developer on behalf of some1 has just completed a feat flawless launching this morning signed a homebrew to do the downgrade on the PSP with firmware 6.38.
He launched his feat on the occasion of his participation in the "PSP Genesis Competition" forum wololo.
To perform the downgrade, people with PSP 6.37 OFW must pass official firmware 6.38.
The downgrade of some1 is a port of Davee 6.35/6.31 downgrader for the 6.38 official firmware, it allows the passage OFW 6.20 In order to use a HEN or CFW 6.20.
Regarding compatibility, some1 says his homebrew signed works well with:
- All PSP FAT 100X.
- All PSP Slim 200X.
- All PSP GB
- The PSP 300X are not all compatible, the exception is made for the PSP 300X motherboard with 7G and 9G recognizable by their date code (0A, 0B, 0C, 0D).
These models are problematic because they readily come with firmware 6.3 + so do not support a firmware below.
Good news, the author notes that although they do not support the downgrade to official firmware 6.20, it will do its best to allow the downgrade to 6.35 official firmware which allows the use of CFW 6.35 PRO B5.
User Guide:
Before you begin, the downgrade is risky, so be aware of what you will do, yet it nya recorded no case of brick with this downgrade.
Certain measures can prevent problems, memory card of good quality, well-charged battery and especially leave the charger connected to the console to avoid unpleasant surprises.
- If you are still OFW 6.37, 6.38 OFW switch to using those prior firmwares.
- Once the PSP OFW 6.38, 6.38 remove this update on your PSP.
- Place the update 6.20 OFW on your PSP
- Then put the folder containing the eboot 638 downgrader. PBP in the folder PSP / GAME / MS memory card or internal memory of the PSP Go
- Start the homebrew from the XMB signed (tab game) and follow the instructions.
- In a few seconds the PSP will reboot to update the official firmware 6.20, just follow.
- Then the PSP will reboot and you'll get a BSOD (blue screen of death)! do not panic, just click on the circle button.
- The PSP will reboot and you will have the opportunity to redo the console settings: language, time, date ... etc.

A hacker named No_One published a PDF hackers supposed to help better understand the firmware 3.6x with the aim to help get the decryption key of said firmware and create a CFW.
The document is based on the use of a dual system firmware through the integration of a second NOR Flash / NAND. Although the presentation is clear, the content is nevertheless technical and requires some knowledge.
All this remains theoretical and there is no evidence that this information will achieve the objective.

Progress on the return of Linux on PS3 have been substantial in recent months thanks to CFW and Dual Petitboot.
The latter, however, posed another compatibility issues with PS3 features a 256MB NAND Flash (PS3 FAT). This last barrier has been lifted since the developers said they managed to hold together the two protagonists.
A guide should quickly be made available to PS3 users.

some1 , the newest addition to the PSP Scene, has just updated his homebrew signed to downgrade your PSP to OFW6.38/6.39 6.20/6.35. This result is possible because the vulnerability has been discovered on the downgrade to 6.38 OFW, was not blocked by SONY on OFW 6.39 , released just a few hours ago.
Reminder:
- All PSP 100X support the downgrade to the 6.20 OFW .
- All PSP 200X support the downgrade to the 6.20 OFW including those with a date code 8C.
- All PSP Go support the downgrade to the 6.20 OFW .
- For PSP 300X , the downgrade is possible also to the OFW6.20 except those with a date code is 0A, 0B, 0C and 0D , also called the PSP 3000 or 7G 9G .
The downgrade of the latter will be towards the OFW 6.35 .

Just 2-3 days after the release of Sony's official 6.39, our Japanese friend neur0ner gives us a new version of CFW 6.39 ME compatible.
ME1 version was already sharing a few hours but was other than a port of 6.38Me3.
Neur0ner now gives us the version ME2 's CFW 6.39 with the main novelty, it can be installed directly on the official firmware 6.39.
A first for the Japanese developer, since the previous version required to use an earlier firmware readable by a HEN / CFW. This time neur0ner used the exploit to some1 that was brought on by the OFW 6.39 Virtuous Flame to ensure a direct installation on it.
As usual, the new CFW 6.39Me2 is compatible with all FAT and PSP 1000 2000 Slim not compatible pandora 8C.

About "The Humble Homebrew Collection":
The Humble Homebrew Collection is an initiative that aims to convince Sony to provide us with a legitimate and official way to create homebrew applications for the consoles that we own.
We are providing you with a free homebrew game that aims to be polished and look professionally made which includes 33 very good and addictive puzzle games. We've tried to make this homebrew games collection as good as possible so that even the anti-homebrew purists will be jealous of it.
Homebrew does not equal piracy, and this is proof of it. These games are all free and are released under the MIT license.
You are free to download these games for the platform of your choice, whether it's on a jailbroken PS3, Linux, Windows, Mac or Android.
This Homebrew game collection is a port of Simon Tatham's Portagle Puzzle Collection to the Playstation 3 system and it includes 33 puzzle games. More games are being written and this collection will only increase with time.
This is one of the first homebrew games that are released on the PS3 which are above the "proof of concept" status and is not yet another backup manager, FTP server or a port of an existing emulator.
This homebrew game is still in active development and will continue to receive regular updates. The TODO list has many items on it and it will continue to improve for your enjoyment.
The main purpose of this website it to serve as a petition against Sony's unjust behavior towards their customers. You are encouraged to sign the petition, donate to the developers or you can simply download the games. The choice is yours.
If you wish to do so, you may also donate to the developers of this homebrew application, as well as to the EFF, which helps defend our rights in this digital age.
It is time to vote with your money, boycott Sony, request your legal homebrew and request your freedom and let them know that they have much to gain by giving us access to the homebrew that we deserve.
Let Sony know that, as a customer, you want homebrew games, you want to see the real purpose of the Copyright Law used properly: To encourage creativity and innovation. Let them know that, as a customer, you are willing to pay for quality homebrew and that if they wanted to, they can get a share of that money. After all, all they care about is money!
Thank you

Another release by Robo Hobo
Quote:
Here is a version for testing, I'm calling it 'Alpha 1'. There's a lot of features in the emulator, and I'm not all that familiar with the spectrum to even begin testing them all. If you find any issues, or have any ideas for improvement, please post them.
If you are using a USB keyboard post any info about non-working keys (likely on non-US keyboards) and I'll add them to the sdcell key map for future releases.
Please read the Readme.PS3 file in the zip for usage info and known issues.
Readme:

PSX-SCENE member Mr.GoodFrag has released a proof-of-concept port of CD-MAN for the PS3.
Check out the official release thread which is located right here on PSX-SCENE!
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f190/rel...Bpoc]-86989/
Quote:
Today I am releasing a proof of concept [POC] version of DosBox that comes bundled with a shareware release called CD-MAN that autoloads (no keyboard or DOS know-how needed)!
What is this?
This is a ready-to-go preinstalled DOS shareware game.
Does this require DosBox to be installed on my PS3?
No, DosBox binaries/config-files are included
I already have DosBox installed, will this conflict with or overwrite it?
NO - THIS WILL NOT OVERWRITE DOSBOX!!! - IT CAN RUN SIDE-BY-SIDE WITHOUT ISSUES!
[this PKG installs to //dev_hdd0/game/CDMAN1234]
Why do I have to press the right thumbstick before my controls will work?
This switches your controller into joystick mode.
How do I use this?
Install the PKG file
Run the game from your XMB
PRESS THE RIGHT THUMBSTICK ONCE IT LOADS!
TRIANGLE will get you past the initial screen
Set the game up to your liking, SQUARE selects.
Thats it! When you're all done, close via the PS-Button.
Major props to Robo-Hobo, who ported DosBox to the PS3!
Without him none of this would be possible!!!
Feel free to make requests - I'll only release shareware or legally free titles in this manner.
(I've got a few gems up my sleeve that I'll be releasing soon)
Grab the PKG here: CD-MAN_Shareware.pkg
Enjoy!
Note: 2 Player support not tested or configured - keep to single player.

News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/05/29/p...firmware-6-39/
Developers Coldbird and Virtuous Flame are now delivering their baby to the world of developers (and users!), by delivering their last update, a few hours before the deadline of the Genesis competition. Talk about cliffhangers
Coldbird just announced that the Pro CFW is now going open source, and on top of that is now becoming compatible with firmware 6.39. You can now choose if you want to install this CFW on your OFW 6.20, 6.35, or 6.39. And we all like to have the choice.
If you don’t know what Pro CFW is yet, here’s what their google code page has to say about it:
•Homebrew Compatible – Run your own unsigned applications, both user and kernel mode.
•Plugin Compatible – Add new features to your PSP via kernel mode background plugins.
•ISO / CSO Game Dump Playback – Backup your own UMD discs via USB and play them from Flash Storage.
•2g+ Memory Range Unlock – Use the previously locked RAM range within your own homebrews.
•NODRM Engine – Use your bought DLCs, no matter on which PSN account you are currently logged in.
•PSX Emulator Unlock – Play your PSX classics, yes – all of them. Not just PSN titles.
•And a lot more…
About Open Source
In a private discussion, I shared my concerns with open sourcing Pro CFW. It is sure great that many devs can now contribute to a common project, but there is still the fear that some stealers will use the source in their own project. I use the opportunity to remind people who would like to benefit from this project without giving back, that pro CFW is released under the GPL License. If you re-use their code for your own CFW, you have to release the source of your CFW as well.
Hopefully this is the first step of something great for the PSP scene. As Coldbird told me, “Let’s hope this will lead to something similar to the cyanogenmod community on android”

Monk9899′s entry for the PSP Genesis competition is simple but very useful, it simulates the flip of a coin, or the roll of a dice. Yes, you always need those. Nice little feature, the coin doesn’t always end up facing up, I like this little detail, as well as the sounds. Let’s hope a future revision will have cool animations as well

It’s the game we all know, but it’s still loads of fun to play. Klozz’s entry for the Genesis competition is a take at the classic old snake game. Do I need to explain? You need to reach the blinking icon on the screen. As you “eat” those, you get bigger…and it goes faster too. Don’t hit the wall or your own tail, or you’re dead.
Reminds you of TankePX posted earlier? Well no surprise here, these two games are from the same team of coders. Am I the only one expecting a “all in one” collection of retro games coming soon from Team Mex?

Th3Alien takes his chance at the PSP Genesis competition with this application which allows you to trick your friends into believing they bricked their PSP. Don’t try this one on your grandma, her heart is not so good and she won’t survive the shock if you brick her PSP.
The homebrew acts as a CFW Flasher, but ends up showing you the Red screen of death… should be enough for you to have a few good laughs

criptych joins the fun of our Genesis competition with a nice little app designed to navigate easily the famous site fanfiction.net. Here’s what the readme has to say:
An unofficial PSP browser for the popular website FanFiction.Net.
It currently allows you to do the following:
* Browse fanfiction by category
* Search by author name or story title/summary
* View category and author feeds
* Read stories with basic formatting (bold, italic, underline)
Controls are listed at the bottom of the screen except:
* Up/Down – move up/down one line
* Left/Right – move up/down one screen
(for lists: to top/bottom if not already there)
* Start & Select – not used

This new Genesis compo entry, PSHider is one of those useful plugins if you have a bunch of apps/games you don’t want everyone to see. From the author, jok3r:
PSHider is a PSP Plugin that allows you hiding any kind of app in the Game Section of XMB,I’ve taken the idea from TN-E “Hide HEN Executable” feature.
- How to -
Write the name of the folder of the Homebrew/Update/Game DLC you want to hide in the file hides.txt, and put it into ms0:/seplugins/
You can hide up to 50 folders, each folder name can’t be longer than 100 characters;put just one folder name per line,so each folder name is separated by a newline

This PSP Genesis game by dev chicky offers you to lead your hero outside of a maze, by pushing the correct walls and opening the correct doors, in a minimum amount of time. The game is in French only for now, but the concept should be easy enough that you grasp the basics. This reminds me of Sokoban, with a bit more possibilities… hmm, multiplayer sounds nice!
Are you up to the task?

A new refreshing game joins the fun of the PSP Genesis competition. This entry from dev D!S is a simple but fun arcade. The goal is simple: shoot the balls. This is not a new game, but an update to his existing work. This new version fixes a few major bugs, and has an entirely new design.

Sometimes a homebrew will leave you speechless. This doesn’t happen much, let’s be honest… If on top of that, I tell you this is entirely done in LUA, this makes me ask what cannot be done with this language nowadays…
Let’s sum this up: multithreading, original music, cellshaders… a game packed with action, but as DeViaNTe, the author of this genesis entry, says, a video describes it more. I simply can’t wait to see what the updates will bring to this game.

It is rare for me to be that impressed by a “first” release. Drakon has been talking about his entry LameCraft on our forums for a little while now, and let me tell you, I was ready to classify this one as “vaporware”, or “fake”. Let’s be honest, it looked too good to be true. Well, that was before I could actually give it a try, and see it was real. If you know the PC game Minecraft, you will feel at ease with this genesis entry which reuses the same concept: allowing grownups to play with blocks like little kids. LameCraft is for now just a sandbox that allows you to build a 3D world to your liking. But Drakon has been restlessly updating this entry regularly for the past months, and each update is simply impressive. Still need to be convinced? 10 days after the first release, there’s already a massive community around this homebrew, and the release thread in our forums is already 23 pages long as I type this. This will quickly become a must-have in your homebrew library.

If you’re like me, you have a tendency to miss some of the most interesting plugins out there. Pergame is one of them, it’s been around for years, and allows you to selectively load plugins on a per-game basis. Useful if you want to use, for example CWCheat on some games but not others, etc…
Developer wn’s entry to the PSP Genesis competition is a companion to the pergame plugin, as it is a homebrew that allows you to easily edit your pergame settings file. And it’s open source

This entry to the Genesis competition, by 743acid743, is a nice all-in-one plugin that allows you to configure lots of your PSP’s actions with some key combinations. Pretty useful to quickly access your most used functionality.
Quoting the author:
With that plugin you can:
- change your brightness stepless, not only the 4 or 5 step’s like sony give us
- coldreset, vshreset and shutdown your psp with a keycombination
- make display on or off with a new keycombination
- automute your psp
- config your standart vsh- and gamebrightness
- load 5th-bright and Quickexit in gamemode
- use the brightness from vsh in gamemode
- save your brightness in registry, to start always with your last brightness config
- block the powerswitch to dont suspend your device, if you dont want it (in vsh and game)
- have a nice “smoothmode” for shutdown

Independently of what you think of those pixel fixers and button testers, I’m sure you all tried one of those tools at least once on your PSP. This entry to the genesis competition is Shaplayer’s attempt at providing one tool to rule them all. Pixel fixer, button tester, UMD Dumper, file browser… an all in one tool that might prove useful in many occasions.
The interface still needs a bit of work, but this will probably improve in future revisions

Yosh’s entry to the Genesis competition is a simple survival game, where you have to avoid a lightning storm. How long will you survive?
I’ll quote the author here:
Hi, let me introduce you my entry to the genesis compo, a survival game called Lightning.
In this game your goal is simple, you’re a tiny thunder fellow trying to pass through some king of dangerous thunderstorm !!
So you just have to avoid incoming lightning bolts as fast as possible. Getting touched will make you hotter, hotter, and so .. redder ! ^^

It’s refreshing to see a 100% original homebrew game. BBGD (Become a bodyguard) is Alface’s entry to the Genesis competition. A simple scenario (becoming a bodyguard to save your Playmobil king) leads to a series of simple games. Yes, the gfx are not as cool as if they had been stolen from a commercial video game, but hey, we all start somewhere and this is only the first version.
Language is French only, but as far as I could tell you don’t need to understand it too much, at least in the first levels, to have fun.
Enjoy

Deutschlands1 and Doeppy’s entry to the PSP Genesis competition is a simple but useful GUI that allows you to flash various recovery menus on your (hackable models only!) PSP. Tired of the old M33 recovery menu? You might want to give a try to another one… the Gen menu maybe? or Neur0n’s 6.38ME recovery menu? This tools allows you to select and install your favorite recovery menu, and VSH menus as well.
Pretty useful
Enjoy

There are people who like Nine Inch Nails. There are people who like Musical Games. There are people who like to see a nice new concept in a homebrew game. If you’re in one of those categories, you’ll probably love this entry for the PSP Genesis competition, by Okapako and CrystalSwordsman. The concept is a bit difficult to explain, you’re basically playing a blob that grows bigger if it gets hit by balls of the same color, and reduces if it gets hit by balls of a different color. These balls appear on the screen in a way that is synchronized to the music, so it’s quite important to have your headphones on The graphics look minimalist but are fairly advanced for a homebrew that comes “out of nowhere”, so these devs are clearly a team to follow a bit closer
Ok, my explanations suck, just give it a try and make your own opinion

PSP Power Controller is a new plugin joining the PSP Genesis Competition. This entry by SnyFbSx (don’t try to pronounce it, you’ll end up in a hospital ) allows you, among other things, to setup some key shortcuts to access some of your PSP’s main functions. For example, by default, this plugins lets you reboot your PSP by pressing Home + Square, going into sleep mod with Home + Triangle, etc…
All of this is of course configurable, which makes of PSP Power controller a very useful plugin, which on top of this is Open source (see the homebrews thread for the sources). Awesome!

The problem with most file managers on the PSP is that they do a lot, but they don’t look so good. Cam-maker’s entry to the Genesis competition is the exception to this rule, a very nice looking file manager shipping with a cool mp3 player
From the author:
What can you do with it?
Well thats a good question, But what can’t you do with it?
You can Explore your whole Memory Stick on your PSP, run and read different file types
You can extract *.zip and *.rar files
You can read *.lua *.txt *.ini and *.log files
You can activate the usb while exploring and doing different actions
You can play *.mp3 files with a nice MP3 Player that is included on the Homebrew
You can open *.png *.jpg files, but not bigger than 512 x 512
You can see the information of any file

I’ve seen many attempts at a “Homebrew Store” on the PSP, most of them failed due to lack of support in the long run, but this one clearly seems to be the exception. HomebrewStore has been around for a little while, and if you don’t know this app you have to try it now.
This update brings a cross-platform feature that allows you to queue downloads from your iphone, so that next time you run the store on your psp, it will start downloading the homebrews immediately.
I feel that this homebrew has been a bit under my radar for the past few months, which is a shame given how professional it looks. And which is why I was happy to accept this new version in the Genesis competition.
No need to look for homebrews all over the place anymore, now that you have the store. Very impressive
Here is the full changelog since the homebrewstore’s first release:
Changelogs:
2.50
•Mobile Device Queuing Support
•Adds Genesis Competition Splash Screen (flashes quickly on first start due to Store Preparations taking the rendering loop)
•Includes LivePatch 4190310 (Screenshots for items)
•Includes LivePatch 4090644 (Scalable Storefront Categories)
2.10
•Improved patching support
•Bugfix in patch error handling
•Click sound added
•Slightly modified user interface
•Includes LivePatch 222416 (Adds percentages to download progress bar)
•Includes LivePatch 2261007+3050410 (Adds search capability)
2.01
•Patches can now be automatically applied while the client checks for updates
2.0
•Revamped user interface
•Content listings now report number of downloads (Data collected since 1/27/2011)
•Categories can now be sorted by number of downloads
•Content being downloaded will now display transfer progress
•Firmware requirement dropped from 6.20 to 5.00
1.1
•Chances of content download corruption when installing more than one item during a single use reduced
•Content installation folder is now displayed on item description pages
•A menu selection bug that could cause the user to be stuck when changing pages was fixed

Many new competitors have joined the Genesis competition over the past 2 weeks, and I’m slowly catching up on new entries. This plugin by ABCanG allows you to make more use of the “home” button when playing a game. With this plugin, pressing the “home” button will give you lots of useful information on your psp (brightness level, sound volume, date in the format of your choice,…) and access a few neat features (possibility to shutdown or reset the PSP, for example).
On top of that, this entry is open source (source included in the package), which is nice for those who might want to help improve it
Note: this plugin is not compatible with the PSP Go yet.

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2011/05/28/...firmware-6-39/
neur0n continues holdin’ it down with yet another release: LCFW 6.39 ME-2 Installer for Official Firmware 6.39. It’s beta and I’m not sure what the leading “L” stands for (maybe Lite?); nevertheless, ME-2 is now compatible with PSP-3000 models!
As it stands custom firmware 6.39 ME-2 is compatible with PSP-1000, 2000, and 3000 models — 01g, 02g, 03g, 04g, 07g and 09g. Unfortunately the PSPgo is NOT supported — 05g.
Inside the package you’ll find the 6.39 ME-2 Installer, the Launcher, and the instructions (in readme.txt) to get up and running.
neur0n also patched up PSARDumper, adding new keys for anyone wanting to dump/decrypt 6.39 firmware modules

This is pretty cool, for anyone who wishes to jump between 6.20 TN and 6.20 PRO. It’s Rinnegatamante’s Easy 6.20 DualBoot that does exactly that — boot either 6.20 TN or 6.20 PRO by pressing and holding “Start” during startup. Do note however, in the video you’ll see a “6.20 OFW” option, which isn’t actually implemented in the version you’re about to download.
Instructions
1.Copy PSP and seplugins folders to your PSP
2.Install 6.20 TN-x
3.Disable Flash0 Protection from Recovery Menu
4.Install Permanent Patch
5.Start Easy 6.20 DualBoot and Extract vshmain
6.Uninstall Permanent Patch
7.Install 6.20 PRO Xx
8.Install Permanent Patch
9.Start Easy 6.20 DualBoot and Extract vshmain
10.Uninstall Permanent Patch
11.Start Easy 6.20 DualBoot and Install DualBoot system modules
Commands (press & hold during PSP startup)
•START: Access dual boot menu
•R-TRIGGER: Starts Recovery (ms0:/recovery.prx)
•O+X+SELECT+START: Restores vshorig.prx (ms0:/vshorig.prx)

New release for PSP3D, the plugin that brings the 3D anaglyph red / cyan PSP games in order to have a gaming experience more vivid.
The German coder AnMaBaGiMa (aka PSPWizard ) releases a new version of its popular PSP3D.prx that comes to v2.1 . The changelog this time is quite low but the quality, since the version 2.1 of the plugin adds support for HEN 6.20 TN and extends the compatibility to the game Dissidia 012 Duodecim.
Recall that the anaglyph glasses have nothing to do with polarized lenses (dark glasses). The plugin is in fact used only for glasses with lenses red / cyan or, alternatively, green / pink, yellow / blue, properly configuring the plugin.

The developer some1 back to update its 6.3x Downgrader, implementing a safety plus.
The 6.3x Downgrader allows anyone had installed the FW 6.39/6.38 can easily return back to FW 6.20 or FW 6:35 in the case of PSP 07G and 09G . Precisely because of these differences in the downgrade, the developer some1 makes the 3.5 version of its tool that implements a check of the PSP model in use, thus blocking any downgrade wrong, thereby minimizing the risk of brick not hackable PSP (TA-088v3 and subsequent models).
Remind you that the operation console for this downgrade is at your own risk

News via http://www.emucr.com/2011/05/spu2-x-svn-r4678.html
SPU2-X SVN r4678 is released. SPU2-X is a pcsx2 sound plugin for PCSX2.
SPU2-X SVN Changelog:
r4678
SPU2-X: Improved Real-Reverb engine algorithm.
Before trying this revision, make sure your speakers/headphones are not too loud.
I have been looking at it for a long while, and I decided it couldn't be just "somewhat similar" to a Schroeder Reverberator.
The SPU2 designers would have actually used a working design for a reverberator, so chances are they implemented Schroeder's.
I haven't had the chance to test this code in spu2-x, but the results in the "Impulse Response Analyzer" tool I coded specifically for this, are positive.
Some tweaks might be needed, because I'm not sure if Neill got the IIR part right or not.

Sony's second handheld console will undoubtedly be given the star treatment during the company's hours-long June 6 press conference at E3, but one particular rumor began circulating this morning and has been making the rounds rather quickly. According to anonymous sources speaking with two separate, unknown sites, the NGP will officially become the "PS Vita" as of just a few weeks from now, during the aforementioned E3 presser.
Two images were initially posted to one of the sites yesterday -- a Blogspot site owned by someone named Hugo Miramontes -- though the shots were later taken down along with the post. In its place, a note now sits, which reads, "This has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever done. I don't know what I was thinking. I'm sorry. I really am." We reached out to Miramontes for comment, and had yet to hear back as of publishing.
A cached version of another now deleted post, which originally indicated just the "PS Vita" name, has comments from the blog's author, explaining that the images are "prepared graphics for E3."
That said, all of this could be little more than a well-crafted hoax. Lest you forget, before the NGP was officially confirmed, multiple rumors pegged the system as being codenamed "Vita" and/or "Veta." Of course, Sony could've just stuck with the name, but it could also be that there are folks on the internet with plenty of extra time on their hands. Hit the poll below the break and let us know what you think of the images and the name. And hey, if you're real into Photoshop and wanna tear apart those shots for the obvious hoaxes they are (are they?), we'd love to hear from you!

Never one to be left out, Sony has finally announced its plans to stream its E3 press conference directly into the PlayStation Blog. This follows in the footsteps of Nintendo, Microsoft and, despite our strenuous pleas to reconsider, even Konami. Make sure to circle June 6th in your Sexy Sony Executive calendar (June is Jack Tretton's month!), because things get going at 5pm PT.
Though Sony has something of a reputation for its press conferences dragging on (and on and on and on), we don't think this year's conference will take up the entire five hour event. Yes, Sony's event on the 6th is five hours long and yes, if it's all press conference we'll kill ourselves too. And that is where suicide pacts come from.

Riviera71 joins the Genesis competition with this port of a nice Open Source game: Amoebax. When I was a kid, I was a big fan of a game called Dr. Robotnik’s mean bean machine… If you’ve played that game, you’ll immediately understand the concept. Hmm, that or Puzzle bobble

[Pirate] recently unveiled his latest work, a water-cooled Playstation 3 laptop. It looks pretty sharp, and can undoubtedly rival some of Ben Heck’s work, even if it does have an external PSU. Obviously having a separate power component isn’t necessarily ideal, but when you are cramming all of that water cooling goodness into such a small package, something has to give!

But NGP focus is, for now, to deliver 'PS3-like experiences'
Sony is not ruling out the use of 3D technology for PlayStation small-screen devices such as NGP, the company has said.
Yet the firm told Develop that its current strategy for the PSP successor is to build a “pure gaming device”.
Mick Hocking, the director of Sony WorldWide Studios’ 3D team, told Develop that small-screen 3D technology is “rapidly improving”.
“The amount of new 3D mobile devices at this year’s CES show is evidence of that,” he said.
“As small screen 3D improves we may be able to deliver these high quality 3D experiences on smaller screens,” he added.
“But our focus at the moment is on delivering the highest quality 3D games viewing experiences, and currently this is best done on HD 3D TVs.”
The NGP, currently rumoured to be officially named PS Vita, is Sony’s answer to a rapidly shifting mobile gaming market.
“It’s a very, very competitive market out there,” Hocking said.
“It’s a very different world from when we first launched the PSP.”
The NGP’s focus appears to be on the core consumer, at least for now while the tech’s costs will push up retail prices.
The device was widely applauded when first unveiled from developers and the specialist press.
[NGP: The full list of engines and tools]
In January, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney gave the NGP a ringing endorsement by describing it as a significant technological leap into the next generation.
“Sony's multi-core GPU is roughly 4x as powerful as any portable we've previously seen," Sweeney said.
It is believed, though not confirmed, that the system has halved its RAM capacity from 512MB to 256MB.
Sony has declined to comment on the matter.
“I’m delighted that with NGP we’ve pushed on quality and usability, with a massive screen, dual-analogues, a unique dual-touch interface and the power to deliver very PS3-like experiences,” Hocking said.
“I think that’s why a lot of people were pleased with it, because that focus is actually unique in that it can be a pure gaming device.”

SCEE has said that PSN maintenance previously planned for this evening has been cancelled.
Service outages had been scheduled from 7pm this evening to 1am tonight (June 1), but Sony has said your gaming will now go uninterrupted.
'PSN Network Maintenance that was scheduled to take place this evening from Tuesday 31st May at 19.00 GMT until Wednesday 1st June 01.00 GMT has now been postponed," confirmed Sony.
"Between these times there will no longer be any maintenance occuring and you should be able to sign in as normal. You will still be able to connect and continue your gaming sessions online," it made clear.
There's currently no rescheduled maintenance time.
In earlier news, Sony promised that the PlayStation Store will be back online by the end of the week in Europe, America and parts of Asia.

In the market for a new PS3 but find the portable version a little out of your price / taste range? Then you might consider Sony's just-announced Tales of Xillia X Edition, which bundles everyone's favorite RPG of unwavering convictions with a 160GB limited-edition console. The rig comes in the standard charcoal black, adorned with metallic red and gold artwork featuring characters from the series. It will also be Japanese-only for now, though Tales die-hards can always have it exported, if you're willing to go above and beyond the MSRP of ¥37,980 ($470). The set goes on sale September 8, giving you plenty of time to consider trading up your Michael Jackson This is It pack.

After years of losses in its PS3 division, it's no surprise that Sony's not attempting a fiscal encore. Just the opposite, in fact. Massaru Kato, Sony's Chief Financial Officer, stated recently that the upcoming NGP handheld won't be as "investment heavy" as previous platforms. What does this mean? Sony probably won't pour cash into developing new semiconductors just for its new handheld, and will instead opt to build NGP hardware with off-the-shelf and readily available components. This could translate to competitive pricing versus Nintendo's 3DS (we hope), but it's all quiet on the pricing front at Sony HQ. That's liable to change at E3 next week, but regardless we'd rather not have to wait four years just to hear Yoshida's good news again.

If you enjoy games such as Tyrian, or Rrootage, Silveredge is for you. AndrewYY worked on this game for one year before submitting it to the Genesis competition, and it shows. The graphics, audio effects, music, menus… everything is really polished and very impressive. From the very beginning of the game, you get into the action, the controls are explained as a quick element in the story, and, well, that’s a detail but it’s the kind of stuff that gives us the impression of playing a professional game

This is one high quality entry from D-T-K joining the PSP Genesis competition. In Cálë (how the hell do you pronounce that? I’ll go with Calé, as in Café…), you are a small ball of light trying to get out of a dark labyrinth. Ok, the labyrinth thing can get old, but what sold me here is the concept of trophies, you get a gold, silver, or bronze medal if you get out very fast. And trust me, the gold medal is not doable unless you know the level by heart.
This one becomes quickly addictive, and it ships with a level editor. Nice game, nice graphics, nice music… nice entry.

One of my most used plugins — RemoteJoyLite — has been adapted to the latest in custom firmwares. This plugin lets you output your PSP screen, over USB, to your Windows PC. It’s especially useful when recording gameplay, whether that is homebrew or actual PSP games.
In order to use RemoteJoyLite you’ll need the “PSP Type B” USB driver. You can find that in this package. Download, unzip, and look in the “windows” directory; there are two drivers, one for 32 bit and the other for 64 bit (x64) versions of Windows.
The rest is pretty straightforward: Activate the plugin under game.txt and/or vsh.txt, connect the PSP via USB to your PC, and start the RemoteJoyLite GUI (exe)

Some updates from developer patpat: CTFtool GUI v5 beta2 and CXMB! Both’ve been updated to support firmware 6.39. This [Windows] app and this plugin go hand-in-hand; CTFtool GUI lets you pack/unpack and convert CTF themes from/to whatever firmware versions, while CXMB actually loads and uses said CTF themes, giving your PSP a whole new look and feel.
If you’re interested in creating your own CTF theme you should check this thread out; Rob S. tells it like it is
