Oculus boss Palmer Luckey has said that gamers shouldn’t expect as much gaming clout from PlayStation VR as they will get from Oculus Rift.
“Their headset isn’t quite as high-end as ours,” he told IB Times. “And the PlayStation 4 is not nearly as powerful as our recommended spec for a PC.”
Luckey added: “It’s still, I think, a good headset. I think that there’s not many people who already own a PS4 who don’t own a gaming PC who are going to go out and make that roughly $1,500 all-in investment in the Rift. It really is a separate market. They’re bringing virtual reality to a different group of people who I don’t think were ever really a part of our market anyway.”
Whether that points to a lower RRP for PlayStation VR than the £500 Oculus Rift remains to be seen.
It has been speculated that Sony’s device could actually cost more than Facebook’s, although no details about pricing have yet been confirmed.

PlayStation VR is out in the first half of 2016, and according to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai, there should be a large selection of games to play on the tech.
Speaking to the BBC at CES, Hirai said that ‘probably about 100 or more’ VR titles are being made for the virtual reality headset.
In addition, the exec revealed that 200 developers are signed up to work on PlayStation VR.
This will surely ease the concerns of UK games retailers. During MCV’s Annual Retail Survey, 55 per cent of store managers said they thought VR would not take off this year. Many said the keys to it being a sucess would be a large line-up of games and experiences, as well as on point marketing.
When pressed by the BBC on whether people outside of video games will be interested in VR, Hirai responded: "With the install base of the PlayStation4 now close to 36m units, that there in of itself is a huge audience we're going to cater to.
“And once we have a lot of people who are really into virtual reality through games I think then we'll be able to expand beyond gaming, especially because we have a lot of content that we create ourselves at Sony Pictures Entertainment."

A mistake by platform holder Sony has seen some Vita owners accidentally getting their hands on a free copy of Legends of War: Patton's Campaign.
Sony has said that the title was “mistakenly included” in January’s PlayStation Plus Instant Games Collection range instead of the intended title History: Legends of War.
Everything is back to how it should be now, and Videogamerreports that those who were lucky enough to grab the unintended freebie are welcome to hold on to it for the duration of their PS+ subscription.
Said few are also free to download the correct title, just like all other subscribers.
It is speculated that the error is down to the regional variation in the game’s name. In North America it has a different name – History Legends of War: Patton. All of which sounds very similar to both Legends of War: Patton's Campaign and History: Legends of War.
If you can understand all of that first time without reading it back then you’re either cleverer than us or a liar.

Sony has announced that “cumulative sell through” of the PS4 has, as of January 3rd, reached 35.9m units.
That follows unit sales of 5.7m units worldwide during the “2015 holiday season” which, presumably, represents the period from November 22nd to January 3rd.
Worldwide digital and retail software sales have now hit 35m units, while PlayStation Plus subscriber numbers jumped a massive 60 per cent year-on-year throughout 2015.
“We are absolutely delighted that so many customers have selected PS4 as the best place to play throughout this holiday season and that the PS4 community is growing more than ever,” Sony president Andrew House said.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to deliver innovative entertainment experiences, and look forward to bringing an unprecedented games portfolio from third party developers and publishers and SCE Worldwide Studios, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, New Hot Shots Golf (working title) and The Last Guardian, this coming year.”
The last Xbox One sales update dates back to November 2014, when the total number of consoles shipped stood at 10m. Microsoft said in October that it no longer intends to report hardware sales numbers.

Sony has offered PlayStation Plus subscribers a one-day extension as an apology for a network outage earlier this month.
PSN went down for around ten hours on January 4th with most services forced completely offline. The breakage was or particular irritation to Destiny players as that was the final day of the shooter’s monthly Iron banner event. No reason was given for the downtime.
“Thanks for your patience during the service interruption,” an email to subscribers reads. It comes with a code that can be redeemed until March 31st. The extension will be applied to current subscriptions and is available to all those who had active subscriptions on January 4th.
Early last year Sony offered its members a five-day extension after the crippling network problems of Christmas 2014 that left online gaming unavailable for the best part of a week.

PS4 and Xbox One UK game sales shot up by over 50 per cent in 2015.
GfK’s latest stats reveal significant growth for the new consoles. However, the overall UK physical games market is down by eight per cent, dropping from £2.294bn in 2014 to £2.1bn last year. That number includes all game, console and accessory sales.
The drop in performance is almost entirely down to falling hardware sales. PS4 and Xbox One were also sold for a lower price, impacting the revenue figures.
Retail reports say that there are now around 5.5m gamers in the UK that own either a PS4 or Xbox One.
Xbox One software unit sales rose 51.4 per cent in 2015 year-on-year (and 38.2 per cent in revenue). PS4 game sales increased by 53.4 per cent (40.2 per cent in revenue).
Four boxed games sold over 1m units in 2015 – FIFA 16, Call of Duty: Black Ops III, Fallout 4 and Star Wars Battlefront. And another practically sold a million – GTA V shifted 999,000 units in boxes.
There was also huge growth for accessories, with £495.6m (a 15 per cent increase) made from toys-to-life products, controllers, headsets and points cards.
It was a major 12 months for Warner Bros, too. The firm was the third biggest publisher last year – in terms of units and value – thanks to the success of its LEGO titles, as well as Batman: Arkham Knight.

Bored of Star Wars Battlefront? PlayStation 4 owners can now download Star Wars PS2 games Bounty Hunter, Jedi Starfighter and Racer Revenge from the PlayStation Store.
Each game costs £7.99 in the UK.
The trio were previously included with the Star Wars Battlefront PS4 console bundle. Now, they're available separately.
To be clear, these are the same games as released on PS2 and you'll need to buy them again even if you own them already (this isn't back-compatibility).
But there are a few technical improvements, despite the aging visuals still being firmly in place.

The Twitch app on PlayStation 4 has been down since Friday for some users under the error code CE-34878-0. But, fear not, live-streaming PS4 fans: Twitch is on the case.
"Our team is aware of it and working to get it fixed as soon as possible," a Twitch spokesperson tells Engadget. There's no word on how widespread the issue is, how long it should take to resolve or what's causing it.

Okay, so this is kind of weird: Sony just announced that it's spinning off PlayStation into its own separate company, dubbed Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC. It combines Sony Computer Entertainment (basically any and all PlayStation-related hardware and software) with Sony Network Entertainment (services like PlayStation Vue and the PlayStation Store) and will be led by Andrew House as president and global CEO. Head of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, retains his title, but will now report toShawn Layden.
The release states that the new company's main focus is to:
"Retain and expand PlayStation user engagement, increase Average Revenue Per Paying Users and drive ancillary revenue. SIE will vigorously expand the PlayStation business by delivering an integrated experience built around best-in-class games and network services to consumers worldwide." Okay, so in layman's terms, don't really expect much to change in terms of how PlayStation and its connected services work; this appears to be essentially a shuffling of papers. The company will be headquartered in San Mateo, California; it has $2 million in working capital and will count April 1st this year as its first day of business -- no foolin'.
It's no secret that Sony's been in dire financial straits for some time, selling off its line of VAIO computers; its mobile division continues to struggle . But Sony's cameras (both standalone and built-into smartphones), and of course its PlayStation division, have helped keep the company afloat.
