MiCoach to be published by 505 Games following legal dispute
505 Games has scooped up a publishing deal dropped by the woe-beset THQ.
Adidas miCoach was to be published by the studio, but when the game did not launch, the sportswear firm sued the publisher for $10 million.
The case was settled out of court, giving Adidas the right to take their game elsewhere, and reimbursing THQ for development costs.
MiCoach was developed by UK studio Lighting Fish Games, and will be released on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 this summer.
"Working with Adidas on bringing this game to market provides a very exciting and immediate opportunity," Tim Woodley, head of global brands at 505 Games told Games Industry International.

Company held 'respectful' meeting with the rebellious coder
Engineers at Sony Computer Entertainment invited George Hotz, the infamous PS3 hacker, to its US publishing headquarters in California to discuss system security, according to a new report.
Sony, which filed a lawsuit against Hotz in January 2011, met with the young hacker four months later, in May, to discuss how he broke past well-protected PS3 security technologies.
In the intervening months between the lawsuit and the “respectful” meeting, Sony had compromised about 105 million PSN and SOE accounts following an abysmal security failure that was exploited by an unknown hacker.
The two hacking incidents are not thought to be directly linked, though Anonymous – the online group suspected to be responsible for the PSN and SOE hacks – had previously declared it was attacking Sony executives and security in response to the firm’s lawsuit against Hotz.
Sony said it invited Hotz to its Foster City headquarters because the firm is “always interested in exploring all avenues to better safeguard our systems and protect consumers”.

Downloadable 2D MOBA Awesomenauts will be released this week as planned, developer Ronimo Games has confirmed.
As we reported yesterday, the studio was unclear on whether its second game would launch for XBLA and PSN this week after German publisher DTP Entertainment filed for insolvency.
However, co-founder Jasper Koning has confirmed in an email that Awesomenauts will be released this Wednesday as planned, though he was unable to go into specifics.
It's great news for a studio formed in 2007 by Koning and co-founder Fabian Akker, graduates from the Utrecht School Of Arts who designed the original De Blob concept. The 12-strong studio's first game, Swords & Soldiers, was released for WiiWare in 2009 and later launched for PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and PSN.
Our Awesomenauts review will be published later this week.

Max Payne 3 will be followed up with a slew of DLC packages, and gamers can pre-purchase all of them with a Rockstar Pass.
Publisher Rockstar Games promised new multiplayer maps, modes, items, characters and more in the months following the shooter's Xbox 360 and PS3 release on May 18th. A PC version will follow in June.
The first map pack will be released in June. Entitled 'Local Justice', it features the Police Precinct map, which will work with all multiplayer modes. There will also be two additional maps for Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Payne Killer, as well as avatar items and multiplayer challenges.
Following packs include the Disorganised Crime, Deathmatch Made In Heaven, Hostage Negotiation, Painful Memories and Trickle Down Economic map packs, and the New York Minute co-op pack. These releases will be spread throughout the rest of 2012.
The Max Payne 3 Rockstar DLC Pass is available for pre-order via Best Buy and GameStop in the US. It will cost 2400 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live and $29.99 on PSN and PC. Rockstar says that's 35 per cent cheaper than buying all planned DLC individually.
Rockstar previously offered a DLC pass for last year's crime thriller LA Noire.

Warner Bros has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita version of Mortal Kombat will be released for the handheld on May 4th. It is released in the US today.

“The game runs at a seamless 60 frames per second, and provides unique gameplay modes and features that take advantage of PlayStationVita’s exciting new hardware capabilities. Mortal Kombat for PlayStationVita is the ultimate portable fighting game and provides hours of fun for mobile gamers.”

Retail, specialist press and the PlayStation Access team have been recruited to push Sony’s latest PS3 shooter Starhawk.
The main focus of the campaign so far has been pre-orders, with various special bundle packs available at specific retailers. The platform holder has booked in-store marketing and ads in lifestyle and specialist magazines. The company has also run online media across games sites.
As Starhawk nears its May 11th launch date, press ads will begin appearing in specialist publications including Official PlayStation Magazine and PSM. The firm has also produced interactive takeovers for some of the biggest UK games websites, including IGN and Eurogamer.
Sony will also make use of PlayStation Access, targeting fans of Starhawk’s predecessor – Warhawk.
The 2007 original was one of the first PS3 releases. It was notable for being available via retail and digital at the same time. Starhawk features a number of new enhancements, most notable of which is a full single-player campaign.
“We expect Starhawk to be extremely popular with the core end of the shooter market. After all it is the successor to one of the first great online multiplayer shooters, Warhawk, which is still one of the top five most downloaded titles from PSN,” said UK product manager Kerri West.
“Our confidence is supported by the impressive download numbers and average playtime of the Starhawk beta which was made available in February.”

More and more single-player games are getting the multiplayer treatment
Sony Santa Monica
God of War: Ascension was officially unveiled last month and one of the surprising additions to the franchise is a new multiplayer mode. It's a pattern we've seen before: single-player games that seemingly have no real need for a multiplayer mode are getting multiplayer modes in what appears to be an effort to boost sales, mitigate the used effect and generally give a title a longer tail.
As industry veteran Richard Browne noted in a recent editorial on used games, "How do I stop churn? I implement multiplayer and attempt to keep my disc with my consumer playing online against their friends. It works wonderfully for Call of Duty - no doubt it can work wonderfully for me. The problem is, at what cost? Countless millions of dollars would be the answer. Let's take a great example, one of my favorite game series released on this generation - Uncharted. What on Earth was the point of taking the completely single player experience of Uncharted 1 and bolting on an entirely new game to Nathan Drake's second adventure?"
The strategy does seem to be working, even if it appears somewhat out of place for a story driven single-player game like BioShock or Uncharted. But what about an action oriented game like God of War?
"It's odd to see it in a third-person game, and especially odd because it's not a shooter"
Michael Pachter
"It's an interesting move, and something I think gamers will like, but it's odd to see it in a third-person game, and especially odd because it's not a shooter. I think GoW fans will love it, but am not sure it will move the needle on sales," commented Wedbush Securities' Michael Pachter to GamesIndustry International.
Even God of War Game Director Todd Pappy has admitted, according to Destructoid, that Sony Santa Monica is "still figuring out" the multiplayer component. That makes it sound all the more like someone at a high level simply told the development team, "You have to include multiplayer. Figure it out."
That said, there's definitely some precedent for multiplayer having a positive effect.
"EEDAR has run numerous studies on the impact on multiplayer on game sales. We have found that when executed properly, multiplayer does have a positive impact on initial and long-term sales," EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich noted to GamesIndustry International. "The pitfall that is common, however, is for developers to simply tack on a multiplayer component thinking it will be the silver bullet solution to long-term sales and a reduction in used sales."
"If this was two years ago, I would be concerned that the allocation of resources towards a multiplayer component often comes at the cost of the single player experience"
Jesse Divnich
Ultimately, what matters most is quality, and just like Naughty Dog's efforts to introduce multiplayer to Uncharted, it's likely that the God of War team will produce some highly polished results. "In the case of God of War, we are confident that the Santa Monica Studio recognizes the common pitfalls. As a studio with a great pedigree, I am sure any multiplayer component will be additive to the God of War experience and not simply a tacked on feature," stressed Divnich.
Some would argue that the addition of multiplayer might damage the quality of the single-player main game, due to resources being divided up, but Divnich doesn't see that as a concern any longer.
"If this was two years ago, I would be concerned that the allocation of resources towards a multiplayer component often comes at the cost of the single player experience; however, the industry has matured enough--maybe through its own trial and error--that no feature should ever be tacked on simply because the 'data' suggests it. How that feature is implemented into the core project impacts sales much more than simply having it or not," he said.
What do you think? Will God of War benefit from including multiplayer?

For a limited time buying a car will get you a portable game system
Car manufacturer Scion has announced that buyers of its 2012 Scion iQ will receive a free PlayStation Vita between May 1 and July 31, 2012. Why? According to Scion vice president Jack Hollis, it's because both products involve a lot of technology in
small packages.
"Scion is very proud of the iQ's intelligent and functional design," said Hollis. "Similar to the PS Vita, the Scion iQ comes loaded with premium technological features, has a focus on functionality, is concentrated into a suitably small package and most importantly is tons of fun."
This is the second time Sony and Scion have teamed up, as the Scion iQ was previously offered as a limited-time free download for owners of MotorStorm RC. Scion has been pushing the iQ hard, but early reviews have been as kind to the car as sales numbers have been to Sony's portable. Car And Driver savaged the poor car in its January 2012 road test review.

Nothing can prepare you for this week's nostalgic update on the PlayStation Store ... save for a succinct summary such as this one. Awesomenauts brings a faux-retro flair to the MOBA genre today (for free, if you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber), while Mortal Kombatreduces its depraved fighting to more diminutive form on Vita.
PlayStation Plus subscribers receive some other freebies this week, including Trine 2,Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania Chronicles. The PS One Classics lineup is bolstered with The Legend of Dragoon, and moving up a generation to PlayStation 2 gets you the original Max Payne.
Check the PlayStation Blog for a full list of new store items, if you please.

This morning's Acti acci-reveal of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, ahead of tonight's big scheduled announcement, is just one more instance in a long line of Black Ops 2-related leaks. But today's leak is a biggie, revealing not just the game's title and launch date, but also new information on the game's setting. "Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 propels players into a near future, 21st Century Cold War, where technology and weapons have converged to create a new generation of warfare," the site reads, outing Blops 2's new future setting.
The site also unveiled the game's box art, which depicts a pensive gentleman holding a handgun and a hunting knife. Beyond that, a tipster this morning sent over four screens of the game itself that were apparently snagged from the site's backend (the images section of the site has been stripped of any images for now). As the screen above indicates, drones seem to play some role in Blops 2. And those were teased less than a week ago by ... uh ... this crazy YouTube video.
There's also a debut trailer, albeit one that Acti still has set to private, which we're guessing will roll tonight during the NBA playoffs. What we can tell from the still thumbnail is that you'll either be watching someone else pilot a heli through Los Angeles, or taking the reins yourself (it's unclear from the image). Either way, we're totally psyched at the idea of destroying the site of E3 from a helicopter. Retribution, finally!
The site's pre-order page only lists options for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, seemingly eschewing the variety of other platforms that previous Call of Duty games launched on. It is, of course, possible that Acti is holding other platform announcements for the future, which we'll just chalk up as synergy with the game's near-future setting.

PlayStation 3D glasses are optimized to sync seamlessly with the PlayStation 3D display, but their universal design makes them compatible with a variety of Active Shutter 3D displays.** Active Shutter 3D technology offers superior image quality over competing Passive 3D technologies by means of the differing processes they execute. Both technologies create the illusion of depth by slightly altering what users' eyes are exposed to. Passive 3D glasses block different kinds of emitted light from reaching each eye. The result is a 3D effect, but one in which certain light data has been omitted. In some cases this can equate to up to half of the available lines of resolution, meaning that this type of 3D effect can not reach the level of true 1080p HD. Active 3D on the other hand does not omit light sources from the spectrum, instead producing its 3D effect through a subtle dimming process of the individual lenses. PlayStation 3D glasses manage this effect seamlessly through their infrared connectivity. The result is a superior 3D effect, at full HD quality. Infrared connections between glasses and other components, as well as other 3D processes are kept constant through the glasses 30-hour rechargeable battery life.
SimulView Technology Improves the 2-player Gaming Experience
Fans of co-op and competitive gaming modes are intimately familiar with local split-screen multiplayer functionality, which literally splits the visible display area of a single TV used in offline play to show the differing actions of individual players participating in the same game, at the same physical location. As advantageous as this is for group play, the quality of even the sharpest of HD television displays is compromised by the halving of the viewable area. SimulView Technology does away with this issue by enabling two players in a supported game to see their actions in-game displayed as full-screen. projections.*** (The full requirement for the effect are: a PlayStation 3D Display, 2 pairs of PlayStation 3D Glasses, a PS3 system, a PS3 game that supports SimulView, and two players) Built on the Active 3D glasses technology and specially enhanced for gaming, SimulView technology brings players deeper in the game than ever before while still sharing the experience with a friend. Games supporting SimulView technology include MotorStorm Apocalypse, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, Super Stardust HD, with more titles in development and coming soon.

Whilst little is known about the in-development title, the studio has previously said that it was “open minded” on which platforms it may release on after its reveal last May.

Upon its debut, the Xperia Play suffered from a lack of game titles that were compatible with its unique built-in gamepad. While the selection has improved considerably since its inception, the question remains: wouldn't it be nice if the handset supported any Android game you threw at it? Wonder no longer, because that's exactly what GameKeyboard 2.0 brings to the table. Yes, the app requires root access, but most importantly, it allows users to map on-screen touch controllers to the Xperia Play'sphysical gamepad. While it's slightly cumbersome to setup for the first time, anybody who has ever configured an emulator with a USB game controller will feel right at home. GameKeyboard 2.0 sells for $2.49 in the Play Store, and if you'd like a quick overview of how it all works, just hop the break for a video. Those who proceed with the download will also benefit from written instructions (for both root access and configuration) in the xda-developers forums.

THQ has announced Saints Row: The Third - Enter The Dominatrix, a standalone expansion for its 2011 crime caper to be released at a budget price this autumn.
In a press release, the publisher reveals that the expansion adds one major feature: superpowers.
THQ's core games boss Danny Bilson said: "Faster than a speeding cyber jetbike, more powerful than a roided-out Luchadore, able to leap flying aircraft carriers in a single bound. - that's the power you'll find inside the Dominatrix. Use it for good. Use it for evil. Use it for whatever you want. As always in Saints Row, it's up to you.
"With a franchise with more than 11 million units shipped globally, it's incredibly gratifying to have the flexibility to give Saints Row fans the features they want most.
"Freaking superpowers."
Saints Row has, of course, never needed much in the way of narrative justification for its more over-the-top elements, but superpowers are something of a stretch even for a game which tasked players with ridding Steelport of a zombie invasion at the behest of mayor Burt Reynolds.
As the name implies, Enter The Dominatrix takes its inspiration from 1999 Wachowski Brothers movie The Matrix. Zinyak, an extraterrestrial with an eye on universal domination, captures the leader of the Saints and imprisons him or her in a virtual reality simulation that looks and feels exactly like Steelport, the setting forSaints Row: The Third.
No release date was set, though THQ confirms that the game will retail for $29.99, with more information promised this summer.

A customer survey conducted by Sony suggests the company is considering splitting the PlayStation Plus service into multiple tiers.
The survey, completed by an IGN reader, presents a range of possible PlayStation Plus plans and asks the customer to choose the one that appeals the most.It then applies further tweaks in a bid to home in on the user's ideal Plus package.
The most eye-catching options include free membership of the Call Of Duty: Elite subscription service, and day-one access to new releases. The survey also asks users to specify how frequently they would like new content to be made available; currently the service only updates once per month, though Plus-exclusive discounts are announced more frequently.
It's an interesting idea, and one we're prepared to believe the company is giving serious consideration to given its stated intent, announced alongside 10,000 Sony layoffs last month, to "enrich its catalogue of downloadable games and subscription services available through the PSN platform."
With sources claiming Microsoft is to unveil a $99 Xbox 360, subsidised by a two-year subscription costing $15 a month, andValve saying it will not be making any product announcements at E3, it looks like the biggest event in the gaming calendar is going to be as much about services as it is software and hardware.

Amazon has revealed that day one pre-orders for Call of Duty: Black Ops II were three times higher than those achieved by predecessor Black Ops in 2010.
“Set to be one of the biggest games of the year, it’s great to see so much enthusiasm and anticipation for Call of Duty: Black Ops II,” Amazon UK’s video games manager Graham Chambers said.
“Bolder and better than before and with everything from a futuristic storyline through to single player mode, Zombies and multiplayer, Black Ops II promises something Call of Duty fans have never seen before.’’

Several former executives at Nottingham studio Free Radical have accused LucasArts of using "stalling tactics" to avoid paying the studio for its work on Star Wars: Battlefront 3.
Speaking to Eurogamer, co-founder and director David Doak, co-founder Steve Ellis, and ex-audio director Graeme Norgate described how a change of management at LucasArts was followed by obvious efforts to ensure Free Radical failed to meet development milestones, describing the people he dealt with as "psychopaths" and saying the saga led to him having a nervous breakdown.
LucasArts approached Free Radical in 2006, with then-president Jim Ward asking the Timesplitters studio to make Battlefront 3 as part of his strategy to reboot LucasArts IPs. After that strategy was deemed a failure, Ward left the company, and his replacements were, it appears, anything but supportive of Doak and his team.
"[Ward's exit] was worrying," Doak said, "but it didn't seem like it would be a bad thing. And then we went from talking to people who were passionate about making games to talking to psychopaths who insisted on having an unpleasant lawyer in the room."
Ward's replacement was Darrell Rodriguez, and in the months that followed LucasArts laid off huge numbers of staff in a bid to reduce its outgoings by half. "For a long time we talked of LucasArts as the best relationship we'd ever had with a publisher, co-founder Steve Ellis said. "Then in 2008 that disappeared, they were all either fired or left. [Rodriguez] had been brought in to do a job, and it was more to do with cost control than making any games."
The description of what followed is shocking. The publisher embarked on a campaign of what Norgate calls "stalling tactics," shifting the goalposts to ensure the studio failed to meet milestones and therefore wasn't paid as agreed. "If a publisher wants to find something that is wrong with a milestone, it's very easy for them to do so as there are so many grey areas within a deliverable.
"If the contract says, 'graphics for level X to be release quality,' who can say what's release quality? And there you have it… We hadn't been paid for six months."
Doak elaborates: "In many ways it was a depressing farce talking to them. They had an agenda motivated by purely financial concerns. Their goal was to stop doing it. And it didn't matter that we had a contract that protected us." Ellis puts that into context: "What we found out in 2008 is that your contract is only worth as much as how far you can pursue it in court."
Doak says these "unpleasant high-level discussions with psychopaths" drove him to a nervous breakdown, and after unsuccessfully attempting to get Timesplitters 4 signed by a publisher, Free Radical went into administration, with 140 staff losing their jobs before Crytek stepped in and turned the company into Crytek UK, which is still trading today and is currentlydeveloping the Homefront sequel for THQ.
With all this in mind, it's perhaps no surprise that co-founder Steve Ellis has set up Crash Labs, a studio focused on small mobile games, with fellow ex-Rare staff. He told us this week that he was happy to have turned his back on the industry he helped build, eschewing risky big-budget games and loss-making FPSes.

Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto has praised the technical capabilities of Sony's PS Vita handheld, but says the machine's software lineup leaves something to be desired.
Speaking to us in Paris, where he was promoting the 3DS-powered visitor's guide at the Louvre museum, Miyamoto did his best to maintain professional courtesy, but couldn't resist having a sly dig at Sony's new handheld.
"It's obviously a very hi-spec machine, and you can do lots of things with it," he said of Vita, which launched in Japan last December andin the west in late February. "But I don't really see the combination of software and hardware that really makes a very strong product."
Since a strong launch - it sold 325,000 units at launch in Japan, and 600,000 in its first few days on western shelves - Vita sales have slumped, particularly in Japan, where it has frequently been outsold by the ageing Wii and even its own predecessor, PSP.
3DS, however, has been Japan's best-selling hardware every single week since last August's price cut - and Miyamoto admits it was a lack of software that held back Nintendo's glasses-free 3D handheld.
"When we launched the 3DS hardware we didn't have Super Mario 3D Land, we didn't have Mario Kart 7, we didn't have Kid Icarus: Uprising," he said. "We were striving to have all of these ready for the launch, but we weren't able to deliver them at that time.
"We were kind of hoping that people would, nevertheless, buy into the product, find 3DS hardware promising, but looking back we have to say we realise the key software was missing when we launched the hardware."
In other words, Vita, like 3DS, needs games, and there are few owners of Sony's new handheld who would disagree with that sentiment. Despite a wide range of launch software, Vita releases since have been thin on the ground; the next big release for the system is Gravity Rush, due in the west in June.
Miyamoto's comments are extracts from an extensive interview in our new issue, E241, which should be with subscribers any day now and will be on sale on May 9. Other topics discussed include hissurprising admiration for Angry Birds, and his desire to make a spiritual sequel to SNES classic The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past.

The British Board of Film Classification brings word of a Dead Island: Game of the Year Edition, scratching a June 30 launch date onto the calendar. Contents of the GOTY edition aren't mentioned, but since these things usually include previously released DLC, expect "Ryder White," "Bloodbath Arena" and possibly "The Ripper."
The listing was noticed by Siliconera, which grabbed a photo of the horrific rating before it was burned off the internets. When contacted for comment, a representative for publisher Deep Silver simply groaned, went back to eating her fresh tartare and shambled away. Love it or hate it – if you've played Dead Island you certainly have an opinion – but latest sales figures peg Dead Island at over three million units shipped worldwide.

Move over Theatrhythm, there's a new absurdly titled and unpronounceable handheld rhythm game in town: Orgarhythm. Developed by Acquire (in association with Neilo) and set to be published in North America by XSEED sometime this year, Orgarhythm is a hybrid rhythm/strategy game for the Vita.
Acting as the God of Light, players do battle against the diametrically named God of Darkness by commanding armies of elementally-themed soldiers. The game's soundtrack, described as "a hypnotic mix of rock, club and tribal music," affects how and when your units attack, with the beat of the music acting as a quantifiable resource to be spent on stronger attacks. The music also dynamically alters itself depending on the circumstances of the battle, adding additional layers of complexity as more troops enter the fray.
As implied by the rather artsy trailer above, commanding your army is handled entirely by the Vita's touchscreen – tapping to select troops, swiping to direct them towards the desired target, etc. Said troops also have a Pokemon-esque relationship with the enemy, due to the fact that every unit is either an Earth, water or fire-type, with all the inferred weaknesses and strengths you'd expect from such a system.
Eventual DLC is mentioned by the press release tucked away after the break, but no specific plans are actually outlined. If you're an aspiring musician, however, take note: XSEED will be looking for independent artists sometime in the near future to bolstier Orgarhythm's aural catalog.

In addition to bringing Orgarhythm stateside sometime before the end of this calendar year, XSEED has also announced equally nebulous plans to localizeRagnarok Odyssey for North American audiences and their Vitas. This follows the game's Japanese release last February, though how closely it'll follow remains to be seen.
Set in the same world as Ragnarok Online, Odyssey is a Monster Hunter-esque runabout wherein the player's (fully customizable) character traverses the world, hunting "monsters and giants" as they do so. Players can choose from six different job classes, switching between missions when necessary, and play cooperatively either online or via local ad-hoc network, the later of which supports up to four players at a time.

Those dusty, old, cobweb-ridden, spider-infested peripheral instruments collecting mold and animal dander in your living room corner may soon see some use, as Zivix and Reverb Publishing's Jam Live Music Arcade is now set to pump up your 360/PS3's jams and/or volume sometime during the week of May 16.
If you made the space-saving decision to rid your apartment of its plastic instruments long ago, you'll still be able to remix tracks from the likes of Atmosphere and Rise Against with a conventional controller. We suppose wearing a giant homemade Deadmau5 mask is also optional, if you can really consider it proper music production without one.

Sony expects its upcoming Move game Sorcery to be a flagship product for the motion accessory.
The company says it “raises the bar” for Move games, and has kicked off an ad campaign to get it in front of kids this summer.
TV advertising will run around Cartoon Network programmes such as Ben 10 and Transformers, while cinema spots will feature at screenings of Men in Black 3.
There will also be print ads in Future Publishing magazines and online activity on Miniclip, YouTube, Disney and Nickelodeon websites.
Sorcery will be a part of Sony’s Summer Move Sampling tour which will cover retail, festivals and other high footfall areas.
“Sorcery raises the bar for PlayStation Move titles, and our retail expectations are reflective of that,” Sony’s UK product manager John Aikins told MCV. “With a comprehensive marketing campaign and great press feedback, Sorcery is the perfect title for all households, and is a great advertisement for the benefits of Move.”
There will be three Sorcery SKUs available on May 25th – a £30.99 standalone game, £70.99 Move bundle and PS3 console pack.

Game designer David Jaffe, responsible for such titles as God of War and Twisted Metal, has gone on record that he is rather interested in one day exploring the first-person shooter genre. Jaffe said that he and his team have been discussing their next project, and have decided on possibly working on a game "with a gun in it" as well as another unannounced project.
Jaffe commented on the Call of Duty: Black Ops II reveal, saying that he "[loves] the genre, but I feel it has been allowed to go a little -- well, actually, quite a lot -- stale when it comes to moment to moment mechanics. I'm hoping to see that iterated on in the future."
Jaffe recently left Eat Sleep Play behind to found a new studio in San Diego. He remarkeds that he came up with 30 ideas for his next game project, and has since narrowed that pool down to two.
"There is a gun in [one of the games]," Jaffe said to IGN. "And you hold it. And all the things that I can sit here and passionately discuss and preach to you are absolutely things that I'm thinking about doing if it turns out the game we're thinking about doing gets made next involves a gun and a person holding a gun."
He hinted that this next project is perhaps going to be mobile-focused, as advancements in tech from Unity, Unreal and even Flash are making some impressive looking titles. Jaffe also noted that he is talking to publishers at this point on the game, and might even be looking to recruit a few colleagues on the design.
"I remain incredibly enthusiastic about the browser space in terms of its ease of access, the number of people who can experience the game. But it doesn't mean that's where we're going to end up," he said.

Canada's Future Shop is home to an exclusive "Limited Edition" of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. The $80 package comes with a steelbook case and a statuette, and is available for both PS3 and Xbox 360 in "extremely limited" quantities.
We'd like to see this partnership taken further. With this promotion in place, it's a perfect opportunity to add verisimilitude to the game through the inclusion of Future Shop stores that could sell extra batteries for all that tactical equipment. Of course, in the world of Future Soldier, it would just be called "Shop."

For those of you who want to test your might at any moment, no matter where you are, Amazon has a deal to help you out. Right now, if you purchase the Wi-Fi model of the PS Vita, you'll get a free copy of Mortal Kombat, along with a 4GB memory card – which will hold you over just fine until you order a more reasonably-sized card.
Mortal Kombat seems like an odd choice for a console pack-in, given its status as both a port and a super-gross violent game, but it is at least a good game! Prospective Vita owners have not always been so fortunate.

Sony doesn’t intend to bring the Crystal White PlayStation Vita to European shores.
As reported earlier, the white version of the handheld will launch in Japan on June 28th.
But at this point in time Sony says it will not arrive elsewhere.
“We do not have plans currently to bring the white PS Vita to the SCEE region, but will monitor demand and continuously evaluate the situation,” a Sony spokesperson told VG247.
Japan will also get a limite edition Hatsune Miku console with game-related art on the back touchpad.

Remember that line-up of colorful consoles we eyed back at TGS? One of eight of those mock-ups is about to become a reality, at least in Japan. On June 28th, color conscious gamers will be able to pick up a WiFi or 3G Crystal White PlayStation Vita for ¥24,980 and ¥29,980, respectively (that's about $312 and $375 if you're counting in greenbacks). If the absence of color is a bit too bland for you, a limited edition Hatsune Miku handheld will hit shelves two months later, commanding a ¥10,000 ($125) premium for the privilege of plastering Sega's digital diva on your Vita's rear touch panel. On the plus side, Vocoloid's poster girl packs a 4GB memory card and a copy of Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva to offset the limited edition's larger sticker price. No word yet when or if these Vita variants will hit the western world, but we'll let you now if we hear anything. Until then? Try to satiate yourself with the video after the break.

A release window for upcoming title Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD has been revealed by none other than Tony Hawk.
Hawk announced on Twitter that the downloadable revamp to the skating franchise will be out sometime in June on XBLA and PSN.
The soundtrack with contain music from the first two Tony Hawk titles, as well as several all new tracks. The title itself will offer five online modes, and the return of secret characters.
Activision has yet to confirm the launch target, but it’s doubtful the man the series is named after is far off in his claims.

Activision confirms that 10 million people have registered for Call of Duty Elite, with 2m premium annual memberships
Activision, as part of its results for the first quarter of this fiscal year, has revealed the latest numbers from the Call of Duty Elite social service. Over 10 million people have registered for Call of Duty Elite, with over 2 million of them signing on for the premium annual membership.
Activision boss Bobby Kotick adds that the increase on paid membership represents a growth of 33 percent since January 31, 2012.
GamesIndustry International recently spoke with James Berger, VP of digital at Activision, about the growth of the platform. With over 2 million users on the mobile application, Berger believes that the platform is becoming all but a necessity for major triple-A titles.
"You have to be able to engage your consumers wherever they want to engage with you in lots of different and unique ways," said Berger. "You have to provide them social experiences that add to the game."
That addition to the game has helped put Beachhead and Activision at a promising junction for the company. Though Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is not expected to
track the sales that Black Ops has, the newest Black Ops II has already been making pre-order sales records.

May 10th, 2012, 00:52 Posted By: wraggster
With this morning's announcement that BioShock Infinite will now launch in February 2013, publisher Take-Two Interactive altered more than a game's launch date. Take-Two is a publicly traded company, and one fewer gigantic product launch during the holiday season – arguably Take-Two's only holiday product launch, unless you count fall launches of Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown as "holiday" – means that shareholders will want to know what's up. That worry is reflected in Take-Two's stock price, which took a five percent hit since the market opened this morning.
But when Infinite got pushed out of the holiday season, it opened the slot up for another high-profile Take-Two-published title: Grand Theft Auto 5. "In our view, the delay opens the window for Grand Theft Auto V to be released in October 2012," Michael Pachter of Webush Securities wrote in an email this morning, echoing a release window leak from earlier this year.
In his eyes, Infinite wasn't just delayed to make it "something even more extraordinary," as Ken Levine put it, but because the folks at Rockstar, "notified Take-Two that GTA V would be ready for October." He believes this resulted in Take-Two offering Irrational Games an extra few months to prepare BioShock Infinite. His logic? "The studio [Rockstar Games] has scheduled every prior GTA release during that month (with GTA IV delayed to April 2008, due to bugs in the PS3 version)."
Furthermore, Pachter and co. speculate we could hear more about GTA 5's launch date "as early as May 22" during a scheduled quarterly investor call, or perhaps in a few more weeks at E3 2012. We've yet to hear back from Irrational, Rockstar, or Take-Two on the subject.

Ubisoft's post-apocalypse third-person-survivor I Am Alive apparently struck a chord with PlayStation 3 owners last month, topping the PlayStation Network's download charts for April 2012, even edging out March's big PSN release,Journey.
The Walking Dead's game adaptation from Telltale managed more than a shambling start as well, taking up two spots on the top 10 with the season pass and first episode in third and fifth place, respectively. Just one Vita title landed on the list, Escape Plan, in the number 10 spot. All of this information – and more! – can be found in the latest PlayStation "Pulse" video, which we've dropped just below the break.

PSP games MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, Everybody's Tennis and Super Collapse were all temporarily removed from the PlayStation Store because they were vulnerable to an exploit that allowed a homebrew-enabling program called Half-Byte Loader to run on Vita.Intrigued, Eurogamer tracked down Half-Byte Loader's French author Erwan - also known as Wololo - to find out more. What's Sony's problem - the threat of piracy?"This has never been Sony's argument," Erwan answered. "They actually never made any official statement about Half-Byte Loader."The argument that Half-Byte Loader enables piracy usually comes from gamers who are not correctly informed, as HBL does not enable piracy."I believe Sony fights against Half-Byte Loader mostly to keep their image - it would be bad for them to 'give up' against hackers in the very first months of the Vita, they have to show to their partners (especially video game editors) that the platform is secure, and that they plan to keep it this way for as long as possible."Witchcraft!
Erwan stressed that "it is not possible to run pirated PSP or Vita games with HBL, not only for ethical reasons, but because it is not technically possible".The PSP has a security model that uses two layers: a restricted user mode and unrestricted kernel mode. Half-Byte Loader runs in the restricted mode."Loading pirated PSP games from user mode is, if not impossible, extremely difficult, and would require advanced knowledge of the PSP system," explained Erwan. "So advanced that whoever would want to do that would have better luck trying to find more advanced exploits on the console than programming all the code required to load a pirated PSP game through HBL. ""I believe Sony fights against Half Byte Loader mostly to keep their image - it would be bad for them to 'give up' against hackers in the very first months of the Vita."Erwan aka Wololo
Many hackers have tried and "failed" to run pirated games using Half-Byte Loader on PSP, Erwan revealed. On Vita, "this is even more impossible", as the PSP emulator runs in an even more restricted mode.Half-Byte Loader allows homebrewed applications and games to run, as well as emulators. Getting it working involves finding a vulnerable game, and that takes "lots of time and some luck". Then, Erwan makes a special kind of saved game and tests it to see if it crashes the console. "It can take hours, weeks or months because many games need to be tested," he told us.Luckily, he gets help from the community surrounding his Wololo.net blog. "I am now aware of about a dozen games with an undisclosed vulnerability, in the PSP library," he whispered, and some were discovered by "unknown" or "novice" hackers. With a vulnerable game found, Erwan can then test unsigned code. "This is usually done by running a small piece of code that displays a message or an animation on the screen, called a 'hello world'," he explained. For anyone with "a bit" of experience, this takes less than an hour, apparently.Nintendo's Wii has a different approach.
The final step is porting Half-Byte Loader to the game, which can take anywhere between five and 30 hours. This wild fluctuation is born of different games using different functions of the SDK, or "different pieces of the PSP", if you like. Therefore, even if a game can run "hello world", it still may never run Half-Byte Loader - not if "critical" pieces/functions are absent.Sony had a torrid time with hackers in 2011 - first with George "Geohot" Hotz, then with hacker collective Anonymous and the PSN Hack.Given that, you can understand Sony's stern stance on piracy or technology closely related to it. But Erwan isn't worried about the legal repercussions, about being the next Geohot in Sony's crosshairs."I have never been contacted by Sony in the past four years since I started my blog," he told us."My work is not illegal (at least not in my country, France). In particular, we are not bypassing any DRM, and are not giving people any possibility to do so."[The PSP had] several critical flaws in the early models, which allowed hackers to know a lot about it very quickly."Erwan
"What Geohot did with the PS3 was give people the keys to the system. Eventually, this could have led to massive piracy, and the loss of all security on the PS3. In a court, it could have been fairly easy for Sony to prove that this was impacting their business significantly (in a negative way). HBL, on the other hand, does not significantly endanger Sony's business on the PSP or the Vita.Erwan's PSP homebrew game Wagic.
"As I said above, it's a matter of image," he added. "Even though HBL is quite harmless, they have to show a 'zero tolerance' policy in order to get some trust from game editors. I am also thinking that they are extremely worried that even a harmless hack could lead to something bigger, so they probably want to shut it down as soon as possible, in a 'better safe than sorry' type of policy. Which is perfectly understandable, by the way."The PSP, Erwan said, had "several critical flaws in the early models, which allowed hackers to know a lot about it very quickly". Breaking into later models like the PSPgo relied upon that early-doors knowledge."The Vita does not seem to have these obvious mistakes," he told us. "In addition, Sony went a bit paranoid on the Vita, and limited lots of the things one can do with the device. This is extremely visible whenever you have to copy some files to and from the Vita, as you have to connect your vita to a computer running a specific driver (CMA) with lots of constraints (internet connection required while you copy files, etc.)."But I think there is something more," he added, "which is not directly related to the security: consoles like the PS3 and the Vita rely heavily on PSN connectivity. A Vita that cannot connect to the PlayStation Store, or that cannot use services such as online gaming, etc., is practically useless."This was not the case on the PSP."Now, when Sony patches a vulnerability - as with the MotorStorm: Arctic Edge, as with Everybody's Tennis, as with Super Collapse - everyone has to update their Vita firmware if they want to use the online features."In this, Vita is very similar to PS3: it is possible to pirate games or run homebrews on the PS3, but it's not a mainstream activity because it requires people to give up features of the new firmwares," declared Erwan."The PSP did not have this problem, as connectivity to the PlayStation Network was not really a core feature of the device."Will the homebrew scene be the same on Vita via Sony's official PlayStation Suite SDK?
"The PSP homebrew scene has probably been one of the most active console homebrew scenes ever."Erwan
It wasn't uncommon for people to keep their PSP devices using an old firmware version that allowed homebrew - a word that buzzed around the PSP's head like bluebottle. But how active is the homebrew scene?"The PSP homebrew scene has probably been one of the most active console homebrew scenes ever," reckoned Erwan. "It's been very strong since the start, in 2005, and kept being extremely strong until maybe mid-2011.One homebrew competition in 2011 had "more than 100 entries", Erwan told me - "I am not sure any other console ever got that."But on Vita it's "another story". It's just "a few people", and Erwan and gang "are still lacking the proper tools to really talk about a 'Vita scene'". It's just a few PSP homebrews running in the PSP emulator. But hold on, hold on. Sony has released theopen beta of the PlayStation Suite SDK[Software Development Kit], which effectively allows - legalises, if you like - homebrew. You can use it to create games and applications for Vita and other PlayStation Suite-certified devices, like Sony's tablets."Yes, I know about this," answered Erwan, "and I've seen many comments from people who assume that we should stop hacking now that this is available. Some of these comments were extremely harsh and if possible I'd like to reply to this."First of all, this is extremely new," he pointed out. "The official SDK was made available less than two weeks ago. Before that, there were rumours about this SDK but nothing verifiable. In particular, it was still not sure whether the PS Vita would be compatible any time soon with this system."Actually, there was a closed beta that started in December, but it did not have PS Vita support. I registered but my entry never made it - that's for the people who assume I didn't even try it."Bottom line is, until two weeks ago, hacking the PS Vita was still the only way to run homebrews on the device."Erwan
"Bottom line is, until two weeks ago, hacking the PS Vita was still the only way to run homebrews on the device."Nevertheless, Erwan made the revelation to Eurogamer that, "I am not sure I personally will continue hacking the Vita now that an official SDK is out there.""After all," he added. "I might as well use my knowledge to try and go with the official route for once."But the PlayStation Suite SDK isn't flawless, he was quick to add - "some of its limitations are simply not compatible with the spirit of homebrews"."First of all, once the beta is over, it will be necessary to sign a contract with Sony to keep developing and distribute games created with this SDK," he highlighted. "In order to distribute them, the apps/games will be reviewed by Sony who will be able to reject games they do not like. It is clear that emulators will never make it to this system."Second, they are putting lots of restrictions on this system, one of them is that it will not be allowed to distribute games for free. I know lots of people who are actually shocked by this, as strange as it might sound."They also have a clause on open source (not allowing it), which basically means lots of existing applications will never make it to the PS Vita," he concluded. "One of them is my own video game, Wagic, which is open source."

Fresh to the scene is another PRO custom firmware adaptation. This one is a little different from what you may normally be accustomed to. PROSwitcherLME 0.5 by -immortal- aims at removing the hassle of switching between custom firmware by removing the need to uninstall a firmware and then install the new one every time.
This release I think is a little lack luster in that it only lets you swap freely between both 6.60 PRO and 6.60-PRO Lite… why anyone would need to do this is beyond me. Really if you have the full version of 6.60-PRO on your PSP why would you go to a lite version? Regardless of how strange this release may be its still a good release and if anyone out there can think of a reason to use this let us know in the comments.

via http://psp.dashhacks.com/2012/05/01/...-v006-released
It's been almost a month since Coldbird released an update to his online client for PRO custom firmwares. He's back with a new update.
The new update provides a fix for the disconnect problems that were experienced in God Eater Burst and a 3 second delay has been added to the Start button. Small update but progress is progress. Coldbird has also implemented an overall status page that shows who's playing what. Finally, individual support threads for games have been added so users can communicate with one another for support.
The PRO Online Client requires that you are on one of the 6.xx custom firmwares on your PSP Slim or newer. This unfortunately, will not work on the Phat PSPs, due to memory limitations. The PRO Online Client is the Xlink Kai for the PSP. With ongoing developpment, server updates and what not, I'm sure that this can evolve to something a solid release.

Calling all miners or lamers or whatever you call yourselves. There is a fresh update to a mod version of the PSP homebrew version of Minecraft known as Lamecraft. This mod is going by the name S4inexCraft MOD and offers a little more options than are provided by Lamecraft.
Like what? I can imagine you’re asking, well how about some new terrains like dense redwood forest, mushrooms, and halfblocks? Will that satisfy your need to build? No… well don’t worry there’s a lot more in there too like doors and even cake.

If your PSP is on 6.39 and you just can't be bothered to update or just can't, neur0n has you covered.
The neur0ner has updated his 6.39 lineup for those still on that particular firmware. It's a small fix for those experiencing issues using the "SpeedUp MS" option of the firmware. Other than that, the Text Color option has been added in the Recovery Menu. Like the name says, you can change the color of the text within the recovery menu from the standard red, to green or even blue.
Remember that the ME flavor is for those who have a permanently hackable PSP, (Phat, Slim non TA-088v3) and the LME flavor is for everyone else. You can pick up the latest version of the 6.39 CFW below.

Zombies! In your memory stick! And all free to play on your hacked PSP. This new piece of homebrew comes from developer Zharikov Vitalik, and brings a "mini themed" Russian homebrew addition to your games section.
The game consists of 5 levels, with an apparent story line to be added to the game in later updates. While I have not seen gameplay of this zombie game, the developer gave a blurb (in Russian) about the small infectious thriller. Here is the translation:
“This is an interesting game, the story is developing in the near future. The game that came out on the streets of the crowd of zombies, because the virus spreads through the air. But our hero is immune to this virus and only he can resist the army of zombies. Forward into battle, kill all the zombies and battle with the boss, what are you waiting for?”

Skip the PSP FAT CFW M33 3. + + Or 4. + + To the new CFW / HEN 6.xx, has always been a long galley! Often a passage to the CFW PRO 6. or ME + + 6. + + from the kit requires CFW old Pandora + Magic Memory stick, or passage through intermediate CFW, then v5.xx 4.xx M33, then use the final update 5.50 GEN D3. With the latter it is possible to switch to official firmware 5.50, beyond the way is open to the official firmware 6.60 then CFW of your choice! To avoid this blah blah blah, Hellcat PSP developer has long been known in the underground scene, through its work on the pandora battery, the custom IPL, but especially by his "Flashing software" Hellcat's Recovery Flasher . bah .... And, this guy is working on a new version 1.7 of its software flash. This will have primary new flash support for custom IPL PSP compatible (FAT 100X and 200X non slim 8C) , with 6.60 CFW "directly", whatever the original firmware and without needing a pandora battery! Thus it will be possible to switch instance directly from an old CFW M33 V3.71 to the latest CFW 6.60 B10 PRO- PRO of the team!
CFW PRO is not the only guest at the party! Hellcat assures us via his Twitter that several CFW 6.39 and 6.60 will be waiting for you!
So you can choose from the ME, the PRO and other opportunities in the future!
Of course this is a Work In Progress, we'll keep you posted the evolution of the new flash software for Hellcat from its public release in beta or final! Official site: https://twitter.com/ #! / therealhellcat /

More great scene news for the Playstation Vita. It appears that some unknown dev has managed to get a dump of the flash0 memory of the PSP emulator of PS Vita and posted it online. According to Wololo: "An unknown Vita developer has shared an interesting link some hours ago, which contains a full dump of the flash0 of the vita psp emulator - Including the kermit modules and the psvita kernel keys! This dump can lead some professional Vita developers to kernel access, which will give us the ability to play nearly every homebrew. A backup launcher could be possible as well, but for these ones a high rank developer would be needed for programming it."

Hardware sales down across the board
Sony’s consumer products and services division has been hit by a $2.8bn loss for the last year.
The news of such a dramatic loss also comes after Sony reported an operating income of $429 million for its PlayStation business last year, although the console was then placed under a different arm.
Sony’s consumer division also includes LCD TV’s, PC’s and digital cameras.
Hardware sales fell across the board, with the PS3 selling 13.9 million units, down from 14.3 million in 2011, whilst PSP and PS2 sales dropped to 6.8 million and 4.1 million.
Sony has forecast however that sales of its portable systems, including Vita, will more than double to 16 million during the next year.

Hirai stresses the importance of third-party studio partnerships
Sony has sold about 1.8 million PlayStation Vita units during handheld’s three month launch window, the company’s new CEO Kaz Hirai has revealed.
The handheld was released on December 17th in Japan, and on February 22nd across North America and Europe.
Sales figures were disclosed for the period ending March 31st. Calculated against previous disclosures, it means that Sony sold about 600,000 units globally during March.
Following a relatively upbeat launch day in the UK and US, the hi-spec system appears to have quickly lost momentum.
Hirai suggested to investors that sales will need to pick up in order for the device to be a success for Sony.

Sony's PS Vita handheld had sold 1.8 million units by the end of March, the company has confirmed.
The figure was revealed by new CEO Kaz Hirai during an investor call following the release of the company's annual results, which showed total Sony losses of £3.6 billion.
"About Vita," Hirai said through a translator, according to Eurogamer, "the last year, [we sold] 1.8 million units [in the] US, Japan, Asia and Europe… I think it was a good start."
It means 600,000 units were sold worldwide in just over a month: the handheld had notched up 1.2 million worldwide sales by February 26. Sony is forecasting 16 million sales of Vita and PSP in the coming financial year, with Hirai telling one analyst PSP would be responsible for around six million.
Vita's slow start - especially in Japan, where weekly sales have hovered around the 10,000 mark of late - mirrors that of 3DS. Sales of Nintendo's console picked up in the fourth quarter of the year, fired by a belated rush of quality games, and it was surely with this in mind that Hirai said software was of the utmost importance to Vita's fortunes.
"[With] a game platform like Vita, the software is the key to success - how good the software is," he said. "We have to reinforce the software area in order to improve the business, that is the basic line.
"At this moment, there is no decline or lack of motivation as a portable platform. There is no change. And services and software must be strengthened."
Sony's annual losses rose 76 per cent to £3.56 billion, with the consumer products and services division, which includes the PlayStation business, hit with a loss of £1.8 billion. The company has confirmed it is to axe 10,000 jobs over the coming fiscal year, and expects to be back in the black by March 31, 2013

Right on schedule, Sony and Activision have teamed up again for this "Limited Edition" Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 bundle that's due to ship May 25th. Unfortunately, once you've opened the box the special experience is pretty much over, with only standard console and game inside, replacing the usualUncharted 3 offering -- unlike last year's 160GB Black Ops combo, there's no free DLC (or anything else) to be had. Still, if you somehow don't have Sony's gaming machine in your living room already and have been aching to own some noobs on PSN then it's a decent option, even if any perks will have to be earned in-game.

Retail is in for a busy November, with Square Enix confirming its Hitman: Absolution will arrive in the midst of the Q4 boom time for games.
The latest game in the acclaimed series is due on November 20th.
It is yet another game due on a Tuesday. Already this year Devil May Cry HD, Kinect Star Wars, The Witcher 2 and Prototype 2 have been released on a Tuesday rather than a traditional Friday. Other games set for a Tuesday release includes Assassin's Creed III, Medal of Honor: Warfighter, Diablo III, Sniper 2, Halo 4, Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Resident Evil 6.
November 20th WAS the release date of Resident Evil 6, before the game was pulled forward to October 2nd.
Square Enix confirmed the news today as part of a bigger announcement detailing its plan to offer a downloadable spin-off - playable from Tuesday next week - to anyone who pre-orders the game.

Jpcsp SVN r2552 is compiled. JPCSP is the most advanced PlayStation Portable(PSP) emulator, allowing you to play your PSP games on a PC. Even though Jpcsp is written in Java, it can already reach 100% PSP speed on a lot of commercial games... and the emulator performance is constantly increasing. Jpcsp takes full advantage of dual-core processors, matching the PSP dual-core architecture. Even a quad-core can give a small performance improvement by leaving free CPU cores for the Java JIT Compiler and the graphics cache.
Jpcsp SVN changelog:

Sony's share value has plummeted following the company's announcement yesterday that it had lost £3.6 billion over the prior fiscal year.
Stock value fell around seven per cent to ¥1,135 in Japan, while the US value fell two per cent to $15.37 - a 31- and 19- year low, respectively.
Sony pinned much of the blame for the financial loss on a series of natural disasters in Japan, and the strong Yen.
Newly appointed CEO Kaz Hirai is already preparing to axe 10,000 jobs worldwide as part of a wider restructuring drive that aims to return the company to profit, a target Sony predicts it will hit at the end of the current fiscal year.

System 3 boss and industry veteran Mark Cale explains why PS Vita has the potential to be an iPad-beater and what Sony could do to help the handheld prosper in a tough market.
PlayStation Vita launched just two months ago but today you’d never know it.
Sony has some of the sexiest technology out there. So I was actually disappointed in the launch and the marketing behind the launch that supported the machine.
It’d be great for Sony to find a way to reposition its marketing to really show off the PS Vita’s hardware and performance. Vita has the potential to be a big opportunity. It is a fantastic machine. There are so many reasons for buying it but I’m unclear as to why Sony is waiting to promote these key features in its marketing plan.
Compared to the PSP, Vita is amazing. Compared to iOS devices, Vita is also amazing. Vita has a fantastic screen display. Not only is it a touchscreen device, but Sony was the first company to introduce into the marketplace a screen technology that Apple defined as a Retina display. Technology it described as ‘revolutionary’.
Vita plays games, we know that, but what else can it do? If you’re using it in the same way as your other mobile devices, you can take pictures. And these pictures are actually of higher quality than mobile phones. Its quality rivals that of the iPhone.
Another key feature Sony isn’t shouting about yet is the location-based services to log in wherever you are. I could do the tourist thing and log in at London Bridge on Facebook. But you don’t need to be online to use these location services. Vita uses these location services to pinpoint where you are when you take a picture.
You can use Wi-Fi and 3G to go online. Vita allows you to use Facebook, Twitter and even Skype, using the machine’s built-in camera. You can use screen gestures, too, on the touch pad, so it’s directly comparable to the iPad.
Price points
Some people go on about the cost of PS Vita. Granted, it’s expensive compared to the PS3, but it’s cheaper than an entry-level iPad 2 which costs £300, and it’s a bargain compared to the top-of-the-range £700 64GB model. And apart from a larger screen, the iPad has nothing over PS Vita.
That message should come through in the marketing. The consumer believes Vita is expensive because they see it as just a games machine with great capabilities, but they might not know what those great capabilities are.
The games engineered for Vita also offer a much better experience than nearly all of the titles you get on the iPhone and iPad. And even mass-market games that made mobile devices so popular with casual gamers, like Angry Birds, are on the PlayStation Network if you want them.
You’ve got a much better interactive gaming device in Vita than Apple will ever be able to deliver on a touchscreen-only product. This is because Sony has kept its traditional, excellent game controls built into the device, such as what all gamers would consider essential – an analogue stick for controlling the games.
For Sony to hit home these points they need, in my opinion, to be included in any and all future marketing campaigns. The video games industry needs this new device to succeed.
So just how important is the handheld market? Well, from April 16th to April 22nd 2012, the Top 10 games chart in Japan consisted entirely of 3DS, PSP and DS games.
The overall sales of PlayStation Portable in Japan, from launch to date, are nearly 19m. The Nintendo 3DS has sold over 5m units in just over a year. So don’t tell me there isn’t a handheld market, because there is.
Handheld hero
The PlayStation Vita is such a great machine and essential to handheld gaming, it mustn’t be allowed to fail.
This is a battle cry. It’s so important for the industry. And there is a handheld market. We’ve seen over here in the UK how well the 3DS is picking up now. Nintendo stumbled with the wrong marketing message when it started out with the 3DS handheld, but it put its hands up and changed its marketing position, message and price point. It showed off what the 3DS can actually do in its newer TV advertisements and press campaigns, just like Apple does with the iPad.
Let’s hope Sony, and everyone else releasing and promoting games for Vita, can now show off what the portable can actually do.

Sony attracted unwanted attention to PS Vita's poor sales this week - but it can still turn this console around, argues Rob Fahey
There were quite a few things in Sony's final results for fiscal 2011/12 which raised eyebrows - not least of all the headline figure, a vast loss of ¥456.7 billion(around €4.4 billion) whose only redeeming feature is that it's not quite as high as the forecast made last month. Most of Sony's real losses originated in the Consumer Products and Services Division, which filed an enormous ¥229.8 billion operating loss. That's relevant to us, because along with LCD TVs, Vaio PCs and digital cameras, that division also houses Sony Computer Entertainment and the PlayStation business.
Away from the headline figures, though, it was an omission that really got eyebrows around the industry heading for the hairline. Sony, like most hardware manufacturers, generally tells the world how many units of hardware it sold in its financial results. That held true in today's financial figures, with the company confessing to dropping sales across the board - figures for everything the firm sells were down, including the figures for its three game platforms, the PS3, PSP and PS2.
"While the industry loves the Vita, consumers simply don't seem to care about it"
Wait... Three? Yes, in spite of the detail being provided elsewhere, none of which was particularly flattering (PS3 software sales were the sole bright point), the PlayStation Vita wasn't anywhere to be found in the report. That omission was corrected by Kaz Hirai on the earnings call a little while later, with the newly anointed company boss revealing that PS Vita sales sat at 1.8 million worldwide in March. The lack of figures in the report, however, was enough to draw attention to the struggling handheld, and has raised the question of the prospects for the device once again.
Speculation as to why Sony didn't simply cite Vita figures in its report is a fairly fruitless thing to engage in. 1.8 million by the year's end is a weak figure, significantly behind the 3DS at a comparable point in its life (ahead of the steep price cut), but it's more likely that Sony simply didn't want to include a system only launched last December in a table of year-on-year comparisons than that it thought it could hide poor sales by leaving them out of the report. Vita is Sony's latest device and the focus of intense interest from the industry and media alike. Nobody was ever going to flick through Sony's presentation slides and just forget that Vita existed. Information like that simply doesn't hide or slip by quietly in the internet age.
Regardless of motive, Vita's figures are out there now, and they're dismal. The console seems to be in a very peculiar place in terms of its market position. Unlike the 3DS, which was widely derided at its launch, with every two-bit pundit having a view on why it was destined for miserable failure, the Vita seems to be genuinely well-liked. I've yet to speak to anyone, within the industry or outside it, who has a strong view that says that the Vita is a poor system, or that its software line-up was disappointing (slow since launch, perhaps, but not disappointing overall). Yet the system is struggling to achieve even the modest success (and I'm really being kind there) which the 3DS enjoyed prior to its price cut.
Does that reflect a dangerous disconnection between the games industry and its consumers? While the industry loves the Vita, consumers simply don't seem to care about it. Viewed from certain angles, that's a fairly worrying situation - but then again, it's hardly the first time this has happened. Games industry types love underdogs and have a taste for the obscure. The Neo Geo, the Saturn, the WonderSwan, the Dreamcast, the GameCube - hell, even the original Xbox - all of them are consoles resoundingly rejected by the public but utterly embraced by those within the industry. Watch the eyes of any game developer or journalist (two species with more in common than they like to admit) light up when they find a truly obscure piece of failed game hardware in a Japanese second-hand emporium, and you'll see what I mean. It's not wrong or strange for creators and those most tightly engaged with a medium to root for underdogs, and it doesn't necessarily imply that they're out of touch with their consumers.
On the other hand, that's not a very reassuring idea for Sony, who would definitely rather that its new console didn't get added to a list of companions like the DreamCast or the WonderSwan. On that front, there's good news, and there's bad news.
The good news is that Nintendo has proven firmly that even in a post-iOS world, there's a market for dedicated handheld game consoles. Worldwide sales of the 3DS are poised to blast through 20 million (if they haven't already done so), which frankly, is far ahead of what even the most optimistic observers thought possible from the device's first year or so on the market. Apple's devices dwarf Nintendo's sales, of course, but Nintendo doesn't really care - if it can maintain and even grow its market even while all of us are carrying around game-capable iOS devices in our pockets, it'll be a happy (and profitable) company. A year ago, few people thought that was possible. Once again we've been reminded that you never, ever bet against Nintendo.
"E3 will be a rare chance to change the narrative - to stop us all from talking about how little Vita is selling, and get us all talking about how exciting the line-up is"
The bad news is that Sony isn't Nintendo. PlayStation has extraordinary brand recognition, but the rapid rise of Microsoft's Xbox 360 as a PlayStation competitor in the home market demonstrates just how precarious even a strong brand position can be - and in handheld gaming, PlayStation has never enjoyed the same sort of position it occupies in the home space. Moreover, Nintendo's strengths lie in different places - not so much in its own brand (although "Nintendo" is still a great company brand in itself) as in its character and game franchises. Sony simply doesn't have anything that competes with that, a fact which it has thrown into stark relief with its recent attempt to ape Nintendo's Super Smash Brothers franchise. Time and again, Nintendo can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat by rolling out a superb Mario or Zelda title, or dipping into the deep waters of its lesser (but still much-loved) franchises. Sony can't.
That's not to say that Vita can't pull itself out of this slump with some strategic (and truly excellent) software titles. More than anything else, that's exactly what the console needs - superb software that puts clear blue water between the capabilities of Vita and of 3DS, while also making the difference between Vita and iOS devices more clearly defined. That software needs to accomplish some difficult things. It needs to be a handheld title (not a home console title shoe-horned onto a smaller device, despite the dull refrain of "console quality!" we hear from so many publishers and developers), but one which leverages the power and capabilities of Vita to great effect. It needs to build fantastic word of mouth. And once Sony has one title that achieves that, it needs to repeat the success again. And again.
That's the kind of software we're going to be looking out for at E3 this year. Sony's press conference needs to be a Vita showcase of epic proportions. It needs to thrill and amaze us with the software it's got lined up for the new platform - to get fence-sitters like myself to actually get our wallets out and buy into the Vita dream. This is a rare chance to change the narrative - to stop us all from talking about how little Vita is selling, and get us all talking about how exciting the line-up is. A price-cut won't hurt, of course - it's probably essential - but even more than price cutting, that's how Nintendo pulled the 3DS out of the fire, and that's what Sony needs to do with Vita.

It would appear that the PSP is starting to be phased out
US-based consumers will have to look long and hard for PSP titles, now that GameStop is starting to reduce inventory around the country. GameStop has confirmed that the smallest 25 percent of stores will have their PSP inventories removed altogether in an effort to consolidate supply.
"The consolidation is occurring to maximize the merchandising space in the smallest 25 percent of stores," said GameStop to Kotaku. "It will also provide a greater assortment in those stores that will continue to carry the category."
As the PS Vita starts to wind up in the US market, the prospect of PSP titles making a major splash seems all the less likely. Vita does not have a UMD drive, and requires all PSP titles to be purchased digitally.
GameStop will still carry PSP games on their online store, as well as the larger locations around the US.

Publisher EA claims previous reports were inaccurate
Electronic Arts has denied reports suggesting it had removed dedicated servers hosting Battlefield 3.
It was previously reported that all servers had ‘vanished’ from the online list.
But publisher EA claims the reports were not accurate.
"Dice is not shutting down servers," an EA representative told GameSpot.
"If Dice-managed servers appear unavailable, it is because they have been rented and customised by players. Dice will continue to add servers and will reserve a percentage of servers for players who prefer to connect through Dice-hosted servers."

Analysts not so bullish on Sony's projections for Vita
PlayStation Vita certainly still has time to turn things around, but the picture so far is pretty dismal. With just 1.8 million units sold worldwide, financial analysts aren't so optimistic that Sony will hit its own goal of 10 million sold by the end of the fiscal year next March. RW Baird's Colin Sebastian told GamesIndustry International that 10 million at this point looks like a "stretch."
"10 million looks like a stretch goal at this point. Perhaps there is a price cut baked into that guidance later in the year, or Sony believe that there are titles such as Call of Duty for Vita that will be meaningful platform drivers," he said. "Vita is a great dedicated game device, but the market for those products continues to shrink as smart devices become better platforms for games."
The price point is something that many have questioned ever since Vita's launch. At $249 for the Wi-Fi version, many consumers may feel the price isn't justified.
"The best thing Sony could do to spur Vita sales would be to lower the price of the device"
Asif Khan
"I am not surprised that the Vita is having such sluggish sales as their launch lineup was nothing to write home about and the price point of the device is too high. With Wii U coming out this fall and 3DS sales gaining momentum, the 10 million unit sales target seems a little too optimistic. The best thing Sony could do to spur Vita sales would be to lower the price of the device," commented Asif Khan, CEO of Panoptic Management Consultants.
Given Sony's bigger financial woes and the need to overhaul its business, however, a price cut on Vita may be too much to swallow.
"Sadly, this poor start to Vita's sales is just compounding problems surrounding the ongoing restructuring of the company. We never believed Vita would be a true profit driver for the company, so its disappointing start is not that shocking. Sony needs to rethink their entire business model, streamline product offerings, and focus on making higher margin quality products," Khan continued.
"Unfortunately, PS Vita's margins will have to suffer through price cuts if they want to start moving more units out of stores. The price cut of the 3DS was exactly the catalyst Nintendo needed to jumpstart sales after a similar lackluster launch. That being said, Sony has bigger problems than a Vita price cut can solve."
Lewis Ward, IDC Research Manager, agrees that Vita hitting 10 million sold by March 2013 will be tough, but it's not impossible. "My global estimate for Vita hardware sales in calendar year 2012 is a little over 9 million.
Vita only had about a month of sales beyond Japan in Sony's last fiscal year so I think it's likely the 1.8 million total will be matched or beaten in the next couple quarters."
A lot will be riding on Vita's 2012 holiday lineup, and you can bet that Sony will try to shine a spotlight on it during E3 next month. "I suspect the holiday 2012 lineup will be pretty solid - especially if the Call of Duty rumor is true - which could push total Vita sales over 9 million this year. I think it's an excellent device for the 'core' gaming community, so hitting their hardware sales target will mainly boil down to delivering uniquely great gaming experiences," Ward added.
While Vita certainly hasn't performed as well as Sony would have liked just yet, Billy Pidgeon of M2 Research was quick to remind us that hardware sales in 2012 so far have been pretty soft for just about all platforms.
"I would have liked to see stronger PS Vita sales, but hardware performance has been poor overall in Q1 2012. Like any new hardware, PS Vita needs exclusive software to spike system sales," he noted. "There are some promising titles coming up, including Resistance: Burning Skies, Gravity Rush and Little Big Planet, along with some third party titles including Street Fighter x Tekken, Silent Hill: Book of Memories and Metal Gear Solid HD Collection."
Pidgeon agrees that E3 could be a key event for Sony to lay out its Vita plans and perhaps spark some more interest in the portable.
"Sony should announce more must have titles for PS Vita at E3. Ideally some of those will come out in Q4 2012, as that will be the crucial sales period to close in on an installed base of 10 million for next fiscal year."

Max, dearest of all my friends. So good to have you back. You look a little tired, friend. Is it all that leaping and shooting, or is it something more? Sit down, sip a little vodka and look at what they're saying about you. Joystiq feels you make "people die real good." What about everyone else? Take a look...
- G4 (100/100): "The performances are top notch, the action plays out with unrivaled fluidity, and the multiplayer is deep and rewarding. Silly distractions aside, Max Payne 3 is an action lover's wet dream that also happens to employ some of the slickest direction and transitional trickery this side of a David Fincher box set. Lock and load. It's bullet time...time."
- Game Informer (93/100): "The same great gunplay from the campaign is replicated in the multiplayer modes, and immense depth is tied to the ranking system (with a level cap of 50) and slew of unlockable guns, skins, and items. Rockstar also provides a crew system that tracks world ranks, kill-to-death ratios, and first place finishes for each crew."
- Giant Bomb (4/5): "Rockstar has taken a lot of risks in the ways it has reshaped the series with Max Payne 3, and there's something to be said for opting out of the easy route. The aesthetic overhaul is certainly the most noticeable, though there's no understating the impact that certain gameplay modernizations have had on the experience. While fans might have a hard time processing the dramatic change in tone, it's approached with a seriousness and conviction that I respect, and frankly, have come to expect from Rockstar."
- Edge (70/100): "Max Payne 3 might solve the problem of how you manage to reload when carrying more than one gun, but detailing alone can't change the fact that this is a surprisingly conservative game from Rockstar. Its absorption of cover mechanics makes Payne feel more familiar than he should, but even then his signature tricks are over a decade old. This is a game about a world-weary killer doing the only thing he knows how to, and for all its spectacular action beats there's something apt about Max's fatigue."

Content policy won't change on in-development titles, but new direction considered
Capcom has backtracked on its policy of releasing on-disc DLC after negative feedback from its customers.
In a message on the publisher’s official forum, Senior VP Christian Svensson said staff at the company had been listening to customers and would now be "re-evaluating" how such content is delivered for future games.
Svensson admitted however that many upcoming titles already in development, such as Dragon’s Dogma, would still include on-disc DLC as the decision to include it “was made at the beginning of the game’s development”.
Capcom recently came under fire from customers after it was revealed that Street Fighter X Tekken had 12 finished characters hidden on the disc, which would be made available at a later date for $20, or 1600 Microsoft points.
A spokesperson for the company then sparked further furore over the policy when they said “there is effectively no distinction" between on-Disc DLC and through download at a later date.

Superbike racer SBK Generations will prosper as it has no competition this year, says the game’s developer Milestone.
Rival Capcom usually releases a fresh instalment in its licensed Moto GP series each year, but has confirmed to MCV it is not doing so in 2012.
That means SBK is the only boxed biking game out this year.
“As a Top 10 franchise, we are confident that SBK Generations will perform very strongly at retail,” Milestone’s marketing manager Davide Bilotta told MCV.
“When you consider it is the only superbike racer this year – as there is no Moto GP title – the fact that it is the best SBK ever developed and the official game of the World Super Bike Championships, it really is a must stock title.”
Generations will be the headline sponsor of Motors TV’s prime-time show Bike World throughout May.
The programme reaches 12m homes in the UK and 21m worldwide.
Banner ads will go live on bikechannel.com, while a PR campaign will target games publications and specialist motorcycle titles.
SBK Generations will hit UK shelves next month on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC via PQube.

Sony’s multimedia credentials have been given a big boost this morning with news of a dedicated BBC Sport app heading to PS3 and connected Sony Bravia TVs.
The app will sit alongside the BBC News and BBC iPlayer apps on the Sony Entertainment Network and will launch in time for Wimbledon at the end of June.
Furthermore, the app will offer the BBC’s full suite of London Olympics 2012 coverage, with 2,500 hours of content spread across 24 simultaneous HD live streams.
“Launching this app to millions of PS3 owners in the UK will be a very welcome addition to PlayStation’s universal entertainment credentials,” SCE UK’s marketing director Alan Duncan stated.
Sony category development manager for Bavia Edd Uzzell added: “Televised sport is one of the biggest rating wins for broadcasters. This truly is a killer app and will provide a substantial amount of additional sporting content that you can’t get through the current broadcasting model.
“We strongly believe this will kick-start more widespread usage of the connected television offering, providing sport fans using the app with in-depth big-screen coverage of their favourite events. The app will also have extensive penetration in the UK thanks to its availability on PS3.”

Japan shmup developer Cave has begun trimming back on its development output by cancelling two upcoming games for PS Vita.
As reported by Famitsu, via Siliconera, the two titles to be dropped are social war-themed game Shirotsuku and an unannounced shooter.
The news of the cancellations comes despite its recent plans to enter the social market to help revive its poor sales forecasts for the next year.
In January, the studio also announced reduced earnings forecasts for the year ahead, and blamed difficulties in the consumer games market and retailers not buying into its products.
Its latest Europe release, Akai Katana, has also suffered from poor sales.

The next in line for THQ’s Saints Row series may already be in the works, if a Volition employee’s Linkedin info is to be believed.
Superannuation uncovered the mention of Saints Row 4 on the Linkedin profile of David Payne, an artist for Volition who has worked on sevral games in the franchise. Along with lead prop and weapon artist for the yet to be announced fourth effort, Payne’s credits also include work on Saints Row 2, Saints Row 3, and its standalone expansion Enter the Dominatrix.
According to Payne’s listing, Saints Row 4 is to see release on PC, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360.
Both THQ and Volition have yet to comment on the supposed leak, and it’s doubtful they will anytime soon with the aforementioned third title’s expansion slated for September of this year.
Update: Payne’s profile has since been updated to remove mention of the unannounced title.

EA and Activision have reached a settlement in a lawsuit that began two years ago, pertaining to the profit rights of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
No details about the settlement are currently available, but both companies said today that they will file a settlement agreement in Los Angeles' California state court.
Former Infinity Ward developers Jason West and Vince Zampella sued Activision in 2010 after being fired, claiming damages of $36 million from unpaid royalties associated with Modern Warfare 2, which launched in 2009. After leaving Activision, the pair began their own studio, Respawn Entertainment, and inked a publishing deal with EA. Since then, West and Zampella's claim rose to $1 billion and Activision countersued with EA as a defendant.
Activision recently paid out $42 million to the Infinity Ward Employee Group, though not as a settlement; at the time, IWEG said it would pursue litigation.
The settlement news comes the same day as a report on Activision's "dirt"-digging tactics has surfaced, stating that Activision launched an information-gathering IT spree on West and Zampella just before the launch of Modern Warefare 2,intended to see them both fired. Activision called it "Project Icebreaker."
No joke.
In Project Icebreaker, Activision's George Rose asked the IT department to access West and Zampella's email, voicemail and computer without anyone's knowledge, a court filing given to Giantbomb by West and Zampella's attorneys shows. The orders reportedly came from Activision CEO Bobby Kotick. Activision attempted to use third-party security specialists and threw around the idea of staging a fake fumagation to get into West and Zampella's offices, the report says.
But now the case is settled -- any verdict on the level of sanity of gaming companies is, however, still out.

Sony is boldly experimenting with the idea of a brain training game on a handheld. "Smart As," coming to Vita this fall, is a "social brain training experience" that calculates players' Brain Power through daily exercises based on 20 different puzzle games – and then encourages them to compete with their friends with online leaderboards and Facebook integration.
The 20 brain games fall into the categories of "Logic, Arithmetic, Language, and Observation," and use all of the Vita's input methods, including cameras, AR, and both touchscreens. Regional challenges will give you more to do based on where you are when you play it.
What part of the brain makes you able to understand Near? Because we don't have that.

Despite being a huge bummer for everyone involved, the end of the world can at least be counted on as a magnanimous source of drama and spectacle. Naughty Dog's latest game, The Last of Us, aims to leverage the studio's sophisticated technology and credible presentation to forge a more intense connection between players and their on-screen avatars. If it succeeds, your actions will stem from the same paranoia, hesitation and fierce bravery coming from Joel and Ellie, two survivors of modern civilization's mysterious closure.

Like the TARDIS, the PS3 is "bigger on the inside," capable of holding an entirely new Doctor Who adventure within its slim casing. The BBC announced today that Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock will be released "globally" on PlayStation Network Wednesday, May 23, and in UK retail the following Friday. "We really appreciate your patience as we've been making sure the game is perfect for all you eager fans," said executive producer Simon Harris, referencing the two-month delay of the game, which made the title unfortunately ironic.
The brief announcement on the PlayStation Blog did not offer any release dates for the announced PC or PlayStation Vita versions. It also doesn't tell us if the game will finally reveal the fate of the Doctor's daughter Samantha.

The full PlayStation downloads list for April – as opposed to the sneak peek we got thanks to Pulse earlier this month, where the list is not segregated by platform – has been released and Ubisoft's I Am Alive was indeed the top download. On the PS3 and PSN list, thatgamecompany's Journey followed Ubisoft's long-awaited title. Reverge Labs' debut Skullgirls managed to snag the third spot.
On the PS Vita side, Escape Plan continued to dominate – no surprise since there's not much else for the PS Vita right now, though that changes today.Modern Warfare 3's Content Collection #1 drop on PSN also did well, topping out the PS3 add-on category. Finally, Final Fantasy VII was the top PSOne Classic, but then again you already knew that because it's always Final Fantasy VII.

Grandma sure did like playing Rainbow Six: Vegas on that old PSP when you'd make your weekly homage for family dinner, didn't she? "Blap! Blap! Blap!" she'd shout. And things really haven't been the same since you traded up to a Vita, what with its lack of support for many PSP titles. We understand.
Thankfully, so does Sony. This morning, the US PlayStation blog announced today's launch of several PSP games on the Vita (including Grandma's fave), as well as a variety of PSP Minis (full list after the break). As usual, if you already own the games digitally for your PSP, all you'll have to do is re-download the files to your PSN-tied Vita. If not, well, you'll have to pony up some virtual cash.
Interestingly, Sony also mentioned "improved playability" for some titles beyond the up-res'd graphics – we're checking to see what exactly that means. The line has since been removed from Sony's blog post.

Criterion Games, developer of the excellent Burnout series and 2010's equally brilliant Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, seems to be gearing up to work on a PS Vita game.
A job advert spotted by internet sleuthSuperannuation calls for a software engineer to join the developer to work on "optimising and tuning the game resource system for the PS Vita", "interfacing the game engine with several parts of the Vita OS" and "implementing interoperation between PS3 and the Vita".Based on the studio's history a new Burnout or Need for Speed title seems like a safe bet. EA has confirmed it will be releasing a new Need for Speed this year. Rumours suggest it might be a Criterion-developed Need for Speed: Most Wanted 2.
The Guilford based studio has teased "lots to share over the coming months" and some "big" announcements in the pipeline.

Activision is to air a new Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer during this Saturday's Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich.
There's no word on what will be shown but we can expect some futuristic fireworks to keep viewers entertained if they're not stuck at the bar at half-time. It seems unlikely that it'll offer anything other than a cinematic look at the game's campaign, but we can't wait to get our first look at the game's multiplayer component.Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said last Wednesday that the publisher is "incredibly pleased" with early Black Ops 2 pre-orders, "which in the first week since reveal are tracking ahead of the record-breaking pace set by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3".

Burnout developer searching for software engineer to 'implement inter-operation' with PS3
Guildford studio Criterion has begun hiring staff for a new Vita title, according to a job listing.
As reported by Eurogamer, the Burnout developer is looking for a software engineer to be responsible for “optimising and tuning the game resource system for the PS Vita".
Other duties include "interfacing with the game engine with several parts of the Vita OS" and “implementing interoperation between PS3 and Vita”.
Since being uncovered however, the job listing has been amended to omit mention of Vita development, referring instead to “new” platforms.
Criterion has developed games such as the Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit and the Burnout series.

Sony has introduced a Steam-like ‘pre-buy’ feature on PSN.
It allows gamers to pay for an unreleased title that is then downloaded and stored on their PS3. When release day finally arrives Sony then unlocks the title from the hard drive and it is available to play immediately.
Furthermore, the first game to use this feature – upcoming Move title Sorcery – is available to pre-buy right now from the European version of PSN.
Pre-buy installations could prove a very useful tool to publishers who wish to promote the digital versions of their titles over physical releases.
Downloading a new 9GB console game on the day of release could, quite literally, take all day. However, if said title had been previously downloaded and installed already then gamers could be very tempted with the speed and convenience of such a service.

The retailers were right. Konami has finally officially announced a June 12 North American launch date for Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on the PlayStation Vita and it's unsurprisingly June 12 in North America. The Vita port includes new control options, utilizing the touch-screen and rear touchpad, allowing players to "zoom in on captivating cut-scenes, peek around corners, interrogate enemies, cycle through weapons, and perform rapid attacks with their knife."
In addition to the new control options, the PS Vita version of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection can use Transfarring to sync save files with the PS3 game. Of course to use this feature you need to own Metal Gear Solid HD Collection on both the PS3 and PS Vita.

Heavy Rain director believes games should evolve through ideas, not just tech
David Cage will not join calls from the industry to rush out a new generation of game hardware.
The director of breakthrough hit Heavy Rain believes his Paris studio Quantic Dream would have few concerns developing on PlayStation 3 for another five years.
“To be honest, I’m not that interested in technology or the next generation of consoles,” Cage said in an interview with Develop.
“If we could continue with PlayStation 3 for another five years it would be fine with me,” he added.
Cage’s philosophy on next generation technologies comes from his wider viewpoint that games studios should be striving for more creative projects instead of technical advancements.

Sanzaru Games president Glen Egan has confirmed that Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be released on PS3 and Vita simultaneously this autumn.
The games will be identical and also allow for the transfer of save data between the two versions, much like Konami’s upcoming Metal Gear Solid HD Collection.
“The portable version will contain all the same awesome Sly Cooper action you will find on the PS3 along with cool Vita-specific features that incorporate the front and rear touchscreens and motion controls,” Egan said.
“The game will also feature cross-save capability, so you’ll be able to save the game from either machine and then pick up right where you left off — whether you’re at home or on the go.”
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time was announced in March and followed the release of The Sly Cooper Collection on PS3 last November.

It was bound to happen eventually, every other gadget does it. After debuting in a serious black sheen, the PS Vita is now getting a stylish white shell as well. Sadly, the shiny new pale version will only be available in Hong Kong at first, starting June 28th. There's no price premium for grabbing the lighter shade of handheld, though, if you want the matching white accessory pack, you'll have to pre-order. On the plus side, if you pledge now, they'll toss in the Trooper Pack, Armor Game case, 4GB memory card and (perhaps most importantly) a lint free cloth for free. Check out the PR after the break.

EA Sports Canada recently announced the feature set for NHL 13, which is due for release on September 11 in North America and September 14 in Europe on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Among the more noteworthy features listed are the additions of "True Performance Skating" and "EA Sports Hockey I.Q."
True Performance Skating is the latest in EA Sports' apparent efforts to introduce physics-based engines to player movement. Much like FIFA 12's Player Impact Engine, True Performance Skating promises to deliver the "explosiveness, momentum and top end speed displayed by today's NHL players," while utilizing over a thousand new player animations. The result, according to the team, should allow for more realistic and creative player movement.
NHL 13 also features EA Sports Hockey I.Q., and unfortunately it isn't a sports-themed quiz show. EA Sports elaborated on the shortcomings of the computer A.I. in last year's game, saying that "players were only aware of skaters in their immediate proximity and goalies could only react to the player in control of the puck." EA Sports Hockey I.Q. is expected to encourage, you guessed it, more intelligent decisions by computer-controlled players, who will now "read the whole ice."
The series' Be a GM mode, traditionally a single-player feature, will allow players to pit their teams against one another in a full 30-team online league inNHL 13. EA Sports Canada says there will be a "companion mobile app" for players to connect to their online leagues as well.
EA Sports also listed details on collector's edition versions of the game, which mostly includes Hockey Ultimate Team card packs. Both the standard andcollector's editions of the game are available to pre-order now from the Origin store.

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 may be in trouble. Some lapsingtrademarks for the its title intimate the Gearbox-developed game is all but abandoned (or the name is changing), and our inquiries into Gearbox Software have yet to be answered. "We don't have anything to share at this point in time," an Ubisoft representative told Joystiq.
Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 was announced at last year's E3 ... and then that was it. We didn't hear a single thing after that preliminary announcement, even though the game was given a tentative 2012 launch window. Right now a cancelation isn't confirmed, but it's looking like these four will have something to be really furious about soon enough.

Swedish developer Overkill Software has revealed that it is working with Valve on an "in-depth collaboration".
In a post on the studio's website Ulf Andersson, game director on multiplayer FPS Payday: The Heist, writes: "We are excited to be able to confirm that an in-depth collaboration between Overkill and Valve is currently in production.
"We are working on a very cool blend of Payday and Left 4 Dead. I am sure it is so exciting that it will have some players check into the hospital before we are done."
The announcement follows the release earlier this month of a patch for Payday: The Heist which added several hints to a Left 4 Deadlink - such as the below image showing some L4D health packs.

Elgato is releasing the Game Capture HD, a device that lets game-casters and YouTube walkthroughmavens shed low-resolution, over-the-shoulder smartphone footage once and for all. The sleek black box sits between console and display, enabling gamers to record their speed runs and kill records for the world to see. Xbox 360 users can daisy-chain the gear into their HDMI set-up, while PS3 users will have to use the bundled AV cable to circumvent Sony's stronger copy protection. The footage will then be compressed with the company's H.264 know-how and pushed to your PC or Mac for uploading. When it arrives at the start of June, it'll set you back $200 -- just giving you enough time to get practicing your soothing and confident narration voice.

We may not have any idea when to expect Retro City Rampage on the Vita (andvarious other platforms), but we're starting to see what it'll look like once it's finally done.
Potential rampagers need not worry about the Vita's smaller screen size, according to developer Brian Provinciano, as the portable version has been outfitted with two different scaling options; one that scales the game to ensure everything is clearly visible, and another that maintains the console version's original 16:9 aspect ration and stylized borders.
Touchscreen functionality has also been "tastefully" implemented, but only so far as to aid in navigating menus and during shopping sprees. "If you're an absolute purist," Provinciano adds, "you can still play the game 100% with the buttons." The Vita version also supports "continuous play" with the PS3 version, meaning that saves transfer between the two platforms and both versions share the same universal scoreboard.
Additionally, the Vita and PS3 ports will come packed with visual filters that make the game look like various systems of yore, such as the all-red "Virtual Burn" and monochrome "Brick Handheld" settings.

As you may have noticed during online play, or perhaps heard about on an internet website, Street Fighter X Tekken's reccent Patch 1.04 introduced a major, game-breaking glitch, wherein any knife-like projectile will cause the game to hard freeze, should it come into contact with any fireball.
"The development team is currently examining the problem and planning to patch the game as quickly as possible," said producer Tomoaki Ayano in a statement to Capcom Unity. "The patch to fix the glitch should be released by mid June." Patch 1.04 was originally released with the intention of correcting infinite combos and that had been discovered.

Kind of a turn-based strategy game, kind of a board game, Hydravision's upcoming PS3 download release Dungeon Twister is loaded with instability – as a feature, not a bug. Two players control teams of eight adventurers, each with different abilities, and try to capture areas of a maze-like dungeon. It's based on a board game (but not the Twister we normally associate with board games, which could theoretically be played in a dungeon).
Upon seizing control of a segment, players can then rotate the area, opening new avenues for themselves and confounding their opponents (or leading directly into traps). The goal is either to escape or defeat your opponent.
Dungeon Twister will take turns on PSN this summer.

The PlayStation Vita port of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath should be released in late June, according to statements made by Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray on the PlayStation Blogcast. "That's my intention," Gilray said. "The QA might say 'noooo' but that's my plan anyway."
The Vita version includes tweaks to make the game more natural on a handheld, like the ability to switch between third- and first-person views by double-tapping on the touchscreen, and using a "pinch" gesture to zoom.
Gilray also hopes to get the HD update of Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee out in June. That's planned for PS3 and Xbox, though of course only the PS3 version was mentioned.

Metal Gear Rising guru and all around video game auteur Hideo Kojima has revealed that footage from the Metal Gear: Rising E3 demo will be shown ahead of E3.
Kojima recently shared a still from the demo's title screen featuring Raiden and was apparently so wowed by the reaction, he sought permission to get additional footage released ahead of the games showing at the industry's annual Los Angeles extravaganza.
Kojima named the image of Raiden as Black/Dark Raiden, but in a further Tweet, hastily pulled down the shutters on further details saying, "I can't say much beyond this, but why he's 'Black/Dark Raiden' is a secret."Kojima then perhaps jokingly suggested that anyone seeking further details should be asking MGS: Rising producer Yuji Korekado via his Twitter feed (@Korekado_Yuji).
Kojima Productions has recently put a number of rather intriguing (or obscure depending on your point of view) MGS: Rising trailers and not too long ago, we also detailed what we want to see from the game. Let us know if MGS: Rising is getting your E3 juices flowing in the comments below.

Sony is to release both Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Game of the Year Edition as downloads on PSN.
Crucially, the prices of each have not yet been divulged. The first game was released way back in late 2007 and the sequel in 2009.
Both can routinely be found for £10 or less on the High Street, so it will be interesting to see if Sony chooses to be competitive or instead tries to charge a premium for the convenience of having both games instantly accessible from the XMD.
Indeed, in the press blurb Sony does say that “you can have two of Drake’s most epic adventures waiting on your PS3′s XMB, available at the tap of a button”.

The following is a PSA for all the PSN users out there, calibrated in PSI and utilizing linguistic psychology: The PlayStation Network is undergoing scheduled maintenance on Thursday, May 24, from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. PDT.
The PlayStation Store and PlayStation Home may not be accessible during this time, but online play and other apps such as Netflix and Amazon Instant will run as normal, provided you've signed into the network at least five days prior to Thursday. This means do it now if you have big PSN plans tomorrow.

One of Sony's most beloved first-party PlayStation 1 games is coming to the PS3 and PSP via ... a company other than Sony. Tomba!, the platformer starring the pink-haired caveman, will be released on the PlayStation Network soon by MonkeyPaw Games.
In addition to being just incredibly cute, Tomba! has some serious credentials. After an illustrious career at Capcom during which he designed the Ghosts 'n Goblins games and produced the Mega Man series, Tokuro Fujiwara founded his own studio, Whoopee Camp, where he directed Tomba! and its sequel for publisher Sony Computer Entertainment.
"Sony and MonkeyPaw have a good working relationship," MonkeyPaw CEO John Greiner told Joystiq. "I think they appreciate the titles we've brought to the Store. And they value the support we give the games. Having a plethora of Japanese content is a distinct advantage PlayStation has over Xbox. But the games still need to be brought Stateside. So our model helps Sony spread their Japanese edge and we help Japanese developers get their titles to a wider audience. Hence, Sony is willing to work with us on titles that may not have otherwise been licensed out. Support is key."
MonkeyPaw has been working on acquiring the Tomba! rights for a year. "We often have to chase down multiple right holders," Greiner said. "In this case, Sony and Whoopee Camp had rights that needed to be negotiated." The deal didn't necessarily include the sequel, however. "Tomba! 2 is a possibility but we need to really sell Tomba! 1 well before we can extend our relationship," Greiner explained. "It's the first time to work with Fujiwara-san so we're trying to make a good impression. Good sales have a way opening doors a bit wider."

Yakuza 5, as revealed in a leak from the latest Famitsu magazine, sounds like it's expanding significantly on its predecessors, spreading out into five Japanese cities (Tokyo, Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka, and Fukuoka) with one protagonist in each – for a total of five, one more than any previous game.
Those protagonists include Kazuma Kiryu, who is now a cab driver in Fukuoka (but will certainly get back to solving everyone's problems with violence),Yakuza 4's escaped convict Taiga Saejima, once again in prison, loan shark Shun Akiyama in Osaka, and Kiryu's daughter Haruka, playable for the first time. Why, we remember when she was just an NPC in a PS2 game, cheering for us as we showed off in the batting cages ... they grow up so fast.
According to the summary of this Famitsu interview, Yakuza 5 has had double the development time of previous games, and features a new engine, allowing the game to move from battle scenes to adventuring "seamlessly." The game is reportedly set for a Japanese release this December.

KickBeat, a "music combat game" from Zen Studios, launches on Vita this Summer. You'll be matching beats to pull off various martial art moves in time with the music. They'll be no on-screen prompts as in other music games - you'll be free to create your own sequence of attacks. The soundtrack is made up of licensed tunes from the likes of Pendulum and Marilyn Manson, alongside lesser known acts such as Taiwanese rapper Shen Yi. You'll also be able to import your own music into the game and use the built-in analyser to create your own tracks.Take a look at the trailer below for a better idea of how it works."Kickbeat is a showcase example of passion, risk and creativity," commented Zen Studios chief Zsolt Kigyossy."Traditional publishers might shy away from this type of thinking, but we will embrace it. After all, what's the point of working in video games if you just keep making the same one?"It's not yet clear whether the game will be download-only or see a full retail release.Zen's past work includes Zen Pinball on PlayStation 3 and Pinball FX on Xbox 360.

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/05/19/p...hrough-a-hack/
A few weeks ago, an anonymous hacker released a dump of the flash0 from the PSP emulator running on the PS Vita. Although it brought nothing new for the end user, it was a verifiable proof that this hacker has access to a kernel exploit running on the PSP emulator.
This week, the same dev apparently got PS1 games to run on the Vita, as shown in the video below (thanks to the Z)
For those who wonder, I have no reason to doubt the authenticity of the video, I wouldn’t see any good reason for a guy who has proven he has a kernel PSP exploit to then produce a fake.
It is important to clarify that our forum member the Z is in contact with this anonymous developer, but they are (AFAIK) not the same person. I tried to contact the developer through the Z, but sadly, he rejected my offer for an interview, as I am craving for details. The offer still stands, if he reads me
The developer says he will release his files if he manages to get sound to work on his hack. Without much details, I can only assume he has been porting popsloader to the PSP emulator of the vita. For somebody with good experience working on the PSP (especially HENs or CFW) this sounds like a doable task.
This comes at a time where Sony is struggling to get PS1 classic games support to the Vita, despite this being one of the major requests players have been sending to the company. It wouldn’t be the first time hackers handle things better than Sony on one of their consoles (to be honest hackers usually don’t have to deal with contractual constraints though).
But don’t jump of joy yet. Although the anonymous dev said he would release his files, they will be useless without the associated Kernel exploit. When contacted through the Z, the dev confirmed he would not release the exploit itself, as he, like many other hackers who have access to those exploits, knows there are not enough of them.
Until then, the only way to run unsigned content on your Vita is still VHBL

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/05/15/r...er-collapse-3/
This patch fixes some crashing issues with snes9xTYL and Lamecraft, among other things.
There are still remaining issues with the VHBL port of Super Collapse 3 that I couldn’t solve yet, I am still investigating: the Duke3d engine is crashing (Duke3d, zombie crisis), Daedalus seems to be crashing when loading roms (I probably won’t investigate this, as Daedalus is slow on VHBL no matter what), Geometry War Portable crashes at startup, Picodrive will crash if you press the “select” button, etc…
So, still lots of incompatibilities of course, but this is getting better, and I sure hope you guys will enjoy snes9xTyl. Interestingly, I had to hook sceAudioOutput with sceAudioOutputblocking, which led to a terrible performance result on the PSP, but is not that visible on the vita. Once again, the superior hardware of the Vita is helping us out.

And what is it? Well lets get to it shall we. Basically it’s an Eboot editor that will allow you to change just about anything in a n Eboot, even the version number. Have a read of the full list of what you can change below.
You can add/edit/remove the following:

Pull out your PSP with your GBA emulator homebrew installed (or even on your PS3 if you have it too)! This is one ROM that you do not want to pass up the opportunity of playing.
Back in 2007, @LinkAndZelda137 and @Z3IKKU (a previous -Hacks writer) began developing a complete remake of the game Pokemon Crystal from the Gameboy Colour using the "shell" of Pokemon Fire Red's graphics on the Gameboy Advance. After a long 5 years, in 2012 we can finally get our callused thumbs on one of the most flawless and incredibly well done pieces of "universal homebrew" (play it on your PC, PSP, PS3 whatever you want) that can be seen in a Pokemon remake.
I won't go into full detail about the game and what these dedicated developers have packed in, but you can most definitely read up on it all on the game website and what the vast expanses of this amazing Crystal Version re-do have to offer.
The game is also available for download on the site linked above, and you can read through the more recent development journal as more work is put into such an outstanding ROM. Many popular YouTubers have actually picked up the game doing Let's Play's of the game in speed runs, and even full playthrough's of the old beta's.
So download the game from the link above, get that emulator running and begin your pixelated journey through Liquid Crystal. You won't be disappointed.

Eagerly waiting for an update to the 6.xx PRO Online Client? The good news is that there's one. Unfortunately, you will have to abandon your stable copy of 6.xx PRO B-10 and move onto the unstable nightly builds.
A few days ago, Coldbird dropped two updates since his return to the project. Three subtle changes across the two versions. Baby steps, baby steps. Here's the changelog:
Beta 0.08 [R47]
•Fixed Ghost Input Problem (aka. Home Menu Gamepad Problem)
•Added Analog Nub Passthrough (allows to use the Analog Nub for game input, even when Home Menu is active)
Beta 0.07[R41]
•Added Server Notice Support (active players now get notified by the server 1 minute prior to a maintenance shutdown, as has been requested by the community)
In Addition, if you aren't aware of the fix for RemoteJoyLite, take a look at this:
Existing versions of RemoteJoyLite crash when using PRO Online. You can download a working version for UMD based PSP models from here. The version linked above has been modified to use the PRO CFW high memory range and thus only works if high memory has been enabled. It also works on PSP Go, however not when PRO Online is active, I'm investigating the matter.
With that being said, if you haven't scooped up your copy of the updated 6.xx PRO client, you can grab it from below. It's nice to see this slowly coming together. There's improvements being made here and there, like the new status page. Let's see how long it takes to get this on the stable side of things.

While the team TrueBlue just proved once again its capacity in terms of hacking with the release of their 2.62 update and support for multiple games 4.11, here it is again facing a new problem, a new clone.
PB2, short for PS3 Break 2, such is the name of the third clone of the old dongle TrueBlue PS3 Break team known for its dongle of the same name at the age of the hack jailbreak 3.41. As features for the dongle, the team PS3 Break offers CFW 3.55 TB V2 with a list of compatible games evoking they cracked the 2.5 update dongle TrueBlue. There has been no game that requires firmware 2.60 or 2.62, but they say they will releaser of updates for their dongle from time to time. Another thing, their site hosts the patch directly from the team TrueBlue Paradox / Paradiso bypassing third links, however, the list is not complete yet. Regarding prices, the team makes a list of official distributors against by any of them shows the exact price at this time, wait some days or some weeks for it, until the product arrives. So, facing this new clone, what will the team TrueBlue, and that will impact on the release of patch TB of future games ... Thanks to the green-to information. Official site: www.ps3break.com

Sony will strike a deal with OnLive or Gaikai at E3 next month for PlayStation cloud gaming, according to reports.
The platform-holder will announce a new game streaming service for 'PlayStation hardware' at the annual trade show in Los Angeles, according to VG247.
It's not clear whether this service could be for PS3 or PS Vita, both, or the next PlayStation home console.
Both OnLive and Gaikai offer cloud gaming streaming services. These allow users to stream full games or demos instantly online without the need for discs or hardware installations. Gamers can currently use devices such as PCs, TVs, smartphones, laptops and tablets to stream games online.
Last year OnLive said it had talked with Sony and Microsoft regarding a potential console collaboration.

Owners of the Xperia Play, it's time to curl up with a teddy bear and your favorite ice cream -- just as long as it's not in sandwich form. After the sudden and unexplained disappearance of the "PlayStation Phone" from the Android 4.0 upgrade list yesterday, Sony has followed it up with a full confirmation accompanied by the usual explanation. As you may have already guessed, the manufacturer tells us that after extensive testing, it was determined that "a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich... in this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability." Sony went on to discuss that it received similar feedback from the developer community after releasing a beta ROM. Still, after being told repeatedly that theentire 2011 smartphone lineup would receive the update, we can't help but be a bit heartbroken by the news.
In the same breath, however, Sony also updated its timeline for the rest of the lineup that is still on schedule to receive upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich: the Xperia arc, neo, mini, mini pro, pro, active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will begin receiving their refreshes next week. The Xperia S is still on track for an end of June rollout, with the Xperia P closely following it and the Xperia U sometime in the third quarter. It's just unfortunate that the good tidings must be balanced out by equally horrible news, depending on which device you own.

Following February's announcement of an HD remake of Jet Set Radio for XBLA, PSN and PC, Sega has announced that it will also be bringing a version of the game to Vita. Graffiti - Jet Set Radio will be be playable at E3 this year and will feature HD visuals and the same soundtrack, but will incorporate new touch- and camera-based interfaces for making graffiti.
“The fan reaction to our recent reveal of Jet Set Radio has been incredible!” says Haruki Satomi, Sega's senior VP of digital business. “As Jet Set Radio is focused on creativity, the touch capabilities of the PlayStation Vita are proving to be a perfect fit.”

Developer Platinum Games has said that publisher Sega has delayed Anarchy Reigns in Europe and North America – despite the fact that the game is finished.
The date for the game has been changed to TBC even though, in Platinum’s words “our work on the game is finished, localized, and ready to go”.
Speaking on the Platinum blog, a representative added (as reported by Polygon): "That means 'to be confirmed', not 'to be cancelled'. We worked really hard to make sure everybody could get the game on time. The game is fully localized. If you buy the Japanese version or any version, it's going to have all the languages in it.
“We really wanted everybody online around the world to play together at the same time, but unfortunately that's not going to happen.
"In the West, Sega is looking for the best time to put it out. It will still be out in July [in Japan]. There will still be ways for you to get it if you know where to go. We're still 100 per cent behind the game and we still want to connect with you and play with you and have a good time. So let's make sure that happens no matter what bad news we get."
Platinum’s obvious defensiveness about the game’s Western prospects inadvertently begs the obvious question – is the game being scrapped outside of Japan?
After all, Sega’s recent record with boxed product isn’t the best, and the company is currently realigning its business structure to grow its digital focus.
Anarchy Reigns will be released in Japan on July 5th.

Technology that pauses gameplay to display advertisements has been filed in a patent by Sony Computer Entertainment America.
The tech would work by effectively pausing any in-progress game and forcing an ad to be displayed on screen for a pre-defined period of time.
It is described by SCEA as "a method for use in advertising includes initiating playing of interactive content, suspending playing go the interactive content, displaying an advertisement, and resuming playing of the interactive content".
This would be preceded by a warning that gameplay is about to be paused. Gameplay would also be rewound for a small amount of time prior to resuming.
The patents also mention the possibility of gameplay “slowing down” as the ad approaches. It also includes server synchronisation that could mean all players of a specific title could be shown the same ad simultaneously.

Grand Theft Auto V will sell 14 million copies during its launch period, an extremely optimistic analyst has predicted.
That figure comes from Stern Agee's Arvind Bhatia, who expects the game to sell more at launch that GTA4 did in its first year (13 million sold, notes Gamespot).Bhatia expects these sales to rake in $700 million in revenue for the game's publisher, Take-Two, who must currently be building a huge fort in which to store its inevitable piles of coin.
Bhatia also predicts the game's release before the end of March 2013 - this fiscal year - forsimilar reasons that others have cited, namely the huge revenues predicted in Rockstar's latest full year FY13 guidance.
So, who here's got it on their purchase list? Actually, who HASN'T got it on their list? That'll be easier.

Generally, having a magical wizard in your pocket would either be incredibly uncomfortable for one (or both) of you, or prohibitively expensive. Wizard upkeep costs an arm and a leg as it is, and with the money you'd spend on the reagents needed to concoct a shrinking potion, you could buy an entire mage. It's a pain, and usually not worth it.
There's is, however, a more humane, cost effective solution on the horizon.WizOrb, the pixelated, chiptuned indie block-breaking/RPG hybrid from Beatshapers and Tribute Games will smash through geometrically perfect arrangements of blocks and onto your friendly neighborhood PS3, PSP and/or Vita next month, when it launches as a $3.99 PlayStation Mini.

Update: wow, that was fast, less than one hour after my post, the video was removed from youtube, thanks a lot guys!
Many people claim to have vita hacks on youtube, and the pattern is always the same: these people steal somebody’s video (typically, a VHBL video), claim they have a working jailbreak/CFW for the Vita, and give you a mediafire link.
The archive is usually protected by a password, which you can obtain by answering a survey. Once you answer the survey, most likely you won’t get the password. If you do chances are it won’t work on the archive, and if it does, the archive contains a bunch of useless files: sometimes it’s a PSP firmware, sometimes a random dump of prx files, sometimes it’s simply VHBL files (that you can get for free here!). If you’re unlucky, the files contain a virus. Either way, you wasted time, and the scammer got paid some money from the surveys.
Usually I don’t pay attention to these scammers, even though I really don’t like how they steal my videos and pretend to be me, but today I’m feeling playful, so I want to debunk one such random video (thanks to John who sent me that link)
We have here somebody who copy/pasted Davee’s proof of concept for a HEN on the vita (see here), and pretends to have a CFW, yadda, yadda. I tried, don’t bother, it’s one of those scams I described above. So let’s play the debunk game. It’s easy at the individual scale, but it requires coordination: we will all report that dude’s video as a scam so that youtube can rightfully remove it. I would claim it’s a copyright infringement, but the only option youtube gives is “this infringes my copyright”, which isn’t true since it infringes Davee’s copyright (so, Davee, if you read this…).
Long story short, just do the following:
Please go to the youtube page of this video, and click on the small flag icon at the bottom of the video. Then report the video as: Spam -> scam/fraud, then “submit video for review”. I believe that youtube will take action if enough people report the video.
That guy has a blogger account too, but sadly google doesn’t have a clear policy on reporting scammers, unless there’s a clear breach of the law. So let’s leave his blog for now…
Thanks in advance for your help, it’s fun to debunk scammers
Also, if like me you think it’s fun, we could do this on a regular basis, as there are hundreds of such misleading “hacks” on youtube. What do you guys think? Is it childish to report scammers, or does it feel like cleaning up the world a little bit?

After almost 3 months of under cover preparation, I present you the new PCSX2 homepage! The last PCSX2.net redesign was done 7 years ago by CKemu and Falcon4ever and now it is my turn to update it
The new website is based on the latest Joomla! platform with a custom modified theme for PCSX2, and is no longer bound to our forum. It uses PHP, a new database for the compatibility list and jQuery for various new features.

Retail listings posted today seem to name two of Ubisoft’s secretive upcoming game line-up.
As reported by CVG, a (now removed) listing on GAME.co.uk named Ghost Recon: Final Mission as being due out on some time in ‘2012’. It said the game had an 18 BBFC certificate and could be pre-ordered for £34.99.
In addition, Zavvi has posted a listing Assassin’s Creed III as coming to the handheld. We knew that an AC game was in the works for the machine, but this is the first time that it has been named as ACIII.
Ubisoft has told MCV that it does not comment on rumour or speculation.

A new colour variant of the PSP will be released at UK retail in July.
The Ice White PSP-E1000 will have an RRP of just £89.99.
The PSP E-1000 was announced last August. It’s a trimmed-down version of the established hardware. As well as being heavier than other models, it also omits Wi-Fi support, though digital games can still be transferred to the device using Sony’s Media Go software.
Crucially, it is compatible with PSP’s extensive UMD software library.
Sony is also trying to associate the launch with its PSP Essential software selection, that offers loads of really great games for just £9.99 a piece.

EA will at next week’s E3 reveal the Battlefield Premium service, according to a retail listing.
Coolshop reckons that the download will go live on June 29th and it is offering a code to access the content for £34.96.
It offers the existing Back to Karkland DLC as well as three future downloads – Close Quarters (June), Armoured Kill (autumn), Aftermath (Q4) and End Game (spring 2013).
Also included are 20 maps, 20 new weapons, ten new vehicles, four new multiplayer modes, 30 assignments and 20 dog tags.
Think of it as an equivalent to Activision’s Call of Duty Elite, although of course Battlefield already offers similar stat-tracking services.

PS3 owners are for the first time being offered full game downloads at a price that’s competitive with the High Street.
Sony America has announced its ‘PS3 Ultimate Deals’ promotion that offers full game downloads as well as all the associated DLC for a cut-down price. 30 per cent is being lopped off as standard, though if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber the discount increases to 50 per cent.
It’s the first time a platform holder has attempted to directly compete with High Street retail – a move that all have admitted they are reluctant to make for fear of alienating retail partners.
For instance, Red Dead Redemption is available with all its DLC and even the Undead Nightmare expansion for just $19.59 for subscribers. InFamous 2 has been cut to $23.79.
Just Cause Ultimate Edition can be had for just $14.69 while Black Ops and all of its DLC, meanwhile, costs $46.54.
MCV has asked Sony if the deal will be replicated in the UK.
Expect to see more activity from platform holders in the digital space as the current generation of machines approaches the final stretch and they begin preparing consumers for what will undoubtedly be a digital-focused next generation of machines.
UPDATE: SCE UK has told MCV that Complete Editions have been available for some time on the European arm of PSN.

Sony may be changing up its paid subscription service
According to a report by Eurogamer, Sony is preparing a revamp of its PlayStation Plus paid online service, with a full reveal at its E3 2012 press event. Multiple sources told Eurogamer that one of the ways Sony will improve the service is by providing top-tier titles to subscriber for free. This will be an expansion of the current PlayStation Plus program which gives users limited time access to certain PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Network titles.
The sources have also pointed to improved PlayStation Vita integration for Plus subscribers. The portable version of the service will offer exclusive titles, DLC, and cloud options, allowing subscribers to access their saves and content without connecting to a PC or PS3.
This revamp of PlayStation Plus may come with a redesigned PlayStation Store including purchases made from a user's PC.http://www.gamesindustry.biz/article...nys-e3-efforts

SCEE to get its own PlayStation certified gaming zone at the venue
The O2 will become home to a PlayStation certified gaming zone thanks to a new partnership between the London venue and Sony.
As Sony's official Screen Partner Sony will supply 280 Bravia televisions to the venue, as well as PlayStations and Vitas so visitors to the O2 can get hands on with the consoles.
"The Official Screen Partnership with The O2 represents a true Sony United showcase of our best technology, content and brand experiences, and a platform via which Sony's full entertainment proposition can be most effectively demonstrated to our customers," said Sonys GM of brand and consumer marketing Matt Coombe.
"Sony's connected devices offer a much richer experience for our customers and, combined with some of the best content available, that experience also looks and sounds better than ever before."
The O2 sees around 8 million visitors a year, and features an indoor arena, exhibition spaces, a club and a cinema. Sony Music and Sony Pictures will also contribute content.
"There are obvious synergies between a global entertainment brand like Sony and an internationally recognised music and entertainment venue like The O2, so we're delighted that we've been able to form this partnership," added SVP of Europe for AEG Global Partnerships, Paul Samuels.
"At The O2 we're always looking for ways to improve and enhance the visitors' experience and Sony's proposition will provide The O2 with state-of-the-art audio visual technology and a unique fan interaction experience."

The first time we saw Sony's PlayStation Move, it didn't even have a name: we only knew it as the PS3 motion controller. The newfangled prototype was Sony's response to the success Nintendo found in the Wii, a motion-sensitive "me-too" that hoped to one up the competition with better tracking, more "core" games and a curious glowing ball perched on its top. Its first outing showed a handful of tech demos, flaunting gameplay concepts that we'd eventually see in Sports Champions and Medieval Moves: Deadmund's Quest. Since then, the Move has seen its fair share of exclusive and compatible titles, but none quite engaging enough to make the peripheral a must-have accessory. With the next generation just around the corner and Sony's portable cards already on the table, E3 2012 is looking a little light on the hardware front. If Sony's going to give the Move one final push, now is the time.

Snapshot isn't a new game, though this may be the first you've heard of it. Nope, Snapshot's been kicking around indie game festivals and such for quite some time (since at least 2009, if not earlier), though we now know thatSnapshot's being developed for both PSN on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
In Snapshot, you follow a little robot named (appropriately enough), "Pic," as he ventures across a puzzle-filled 2D world. By snapping square photos of the environment, Pic can alter the world around him – "taking photographs of light and using it to interact with physics" and momentum-based puzzles are both given as examples of Snapshot's gameplay twist.
The game's a Sony exclusive (at least for now), with cross-platform save functionality built-in, and it's expected some time this fall. Check out the latest trailer just above – it's quite pretty!

Hey, in case you didn't know, that Smash Bros.-esque PlayStation 3 game,PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, is very likely also heading to PlayStation Vita. How likely? Pretty freakin' likely, especially considering the recently discovered group of domain registrations from Sony Computer Entertainment of America tied to URLs like "PlaystationAllStarsVita.com," "PS-AllStarsVita.com," and "PSAllStarsBattleRoyaleVita.com."
As with so many of these discoveries, Superannuation spotted the URLs – URLs that pretty clearly identify a Vita-based version of the brawler. We'll be saying this a lot this week, so get used to it: we've reached out to Sony for more info, but only got "we don't comment on rumor or speculation" in return. We expect more info next week during E3.

You're always in a hurry to learn the controls of a new game in the bustle and din of a press event. You might pick a few things up from a tutorial card resting near the screen, from a patient developer stationed nearby, or through one of those loading screens that can barely contain a controller and 29 labels, bursting out of it like informative tentacles. When Vikings Attack, a new party game for PlayStation 3 and Vita, stood out at recent Sony press event because it's filled with clutter, yet wrapped in the simplicity of two-button play.
Presented with vibrant, cel-shaded aplomb, When Vikings Attack is essentially a game of crowd-versus-crowd control. You maneuver a cluster of portly citizens, brought together in the face of an inexplicable, anachronistic viking invasion of 1970s England. The number of people in your crowd is an indicator of your speed, health and strength, and more able bodies can lift larger and heavier objects.
That's right: the secret to thwarting the Norsemen of the apocalypse is to pick up the manufactured detritus of civilization, such as benches, cars, ambulances and phone booths, and hurl it at incoming streams of invaders. It's a bit like bowling, with mismatched, costumed people for pins, and balls coming in every shape, size and seriously you can throw everything at everyone.

Sony has announced a temporary price cut for PlayStation Vita in France, a limited offer that will take place from June 1 to July 15.
Customers will be entitled to a rebate of €50 (£39.87) on console purchases during the promotion's duration. Unfortunately, Sony doesn't intend to replicate the offer in other territories.
“With this offer we want to make it more accessible to the greatest number throughout the approaching summer vacation,” SCE Europe VP Philippe Cardon explained.
A spokesperson for SCE UK added "This is a limited retail price promotion that is only available for a short space of time in France."

Bethesda Softworks has announced Doom 3 BFG Edition, which includes remastered versions of the original game and Resurrection Of Evil add-on pack, and revealed that the game will be coming to consoles as well as PC.
BFG Edition also includes seven new levels grouped together under the title The Lost Mission.
Bethesda's press release promises "greatly enhanced graphics," which includes improved rendering, lighting and the addition of 3D; 5.1 surround sound; Xbox 360 achievements and PlayStation 3 Trophies; and a new checkpoint save system to smooth progress through the nerve-shredding game.
And, perhaps best of all, an armour-mounted flashlight will reduce both panicked blind-firing and the frustration of the original game's insistance of making players swap between the torch or weapon.
“Doom 3 was enthusiastically embraced by gamers worldwide at its release,” says id Software technical director John Carmack.
“Today, the full experience has been enhanced and extended to be better than ever, and is delivered across all the platforms with a silky smooth frame rate and highly responsive controls.
"New support for 3D TVs, monitors, and head mounted displays also allows players to experience the game with more depth than ever before. We think shooter fans everywhere will love it.”
BFG Edition will include the original Doom and Doom 2 to add to your extensive collection of versions. Overall, a package that should help tide us over until Doom 4 finally surfaces.
Bethesda recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of Doom's predecessor, Wolfenstein 3D with a browser version of the game and creator's commentary by Carmack himself.

Sony is close to agreeing a deal to acquire either Gaikai or OnLive, according to reports.
Reports last weekend claimed that Sony was to announce a partnership with a major cloud gaming firm during its E3 press conference next Monday. However, a source has told MCV that Sony's interest in the cloud runs far deeper than that, and that an outright acquisition is "close to being signed."
What's not known at this point is whether the deal is intended for Sony's consoles, or its range of TVs. The latter is more believable at this point, especially given the recent deal which has seenGaikai integrated in LG Smart TVs.
By contrast, a console deal would be a real shock, and not just to retailers - and if a deal is close, our money's on it being with David Perry's company. Speaking at CES in January, Gaikai chief product officer Nanea Reeves said: "Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3." Sony spent heavily on PS3, of course, and its high price consigned it to an early third place from which it has never recovered. Could the PlayStation 4 be a Bravia TV, with cloud gaming innards?
Expect more to be revealed at Sony's E3 conference, which takes place on Monday 6pm PST - or 2am on Tuesday. We'll be there, of course, ensuring a steady flow of timely coverage so you don't miss a thing; the best way to keep on top of it is by keeping a close eye on our E3 2012 topic page.

The latest game to benefit from the PlayStation Pub Fund is Guacamelee, a side-scrolling puzzle platformer from DrinkBox Studios.
Described by studio COO Graham Smith as a “Mexican-themed co-op-multiplayer dimension-swapping Metroid-vania beat-em-up platformer”, Guacamelee is headed to both the PS3 and PS Vita. Smith promised that the game will leverage the strengths of both platforms, although he didn’t divulge any specifics on what those were.
The PlayStation Pub Fund was started by Sony in 2009 to help indie developers bring unique experiences to PlayStation gamers. Games such as Joe Danger and Tales from Space: About a Blob have benefitted from the program in the past.

Sony and Microsoft are both gearing up for their E3 press conferences next week, and while neither company is likely to shed much (if any) light on next-gen plans, The Wall Street Journal has offered up an interesting tidbit, suggesting that Sony did consider completely abandoning physical game discs for PlayStation 4 but ultimately decided against such a move.
The Journal cites "people familiar with the matter" and notes that Sony is still targeting said, opting to include optical disk drives rather than break with a decades-old model in the industry a 2013 release for the successor to PS3.
While there has been plenty of speculation about the PS4 or "Orbis" possibly including some anti-used games technology, an all digital console certainly would make that a moot point. Ultimately, the report suggests that Sony decided against going all online with Orbis because Internet connectivity is still too inconsistent around the world. Large game files and a bad web connection would not be a good combination for Sony's customers.
If we had to guess, Sony's next-gen console will take an approach similar to Vita, where much of the content is available digitally but will also be sold at brick-and-mortar. As for E3, according to analysts, Sony's focus will be on showcasing its core content on PS3, demonstrating that there are actually plenty of reasons to buy a Vita, and revealing the next phase of its digital plans on PSN.

Activision is targeting the die-hard Transformer fans with its pre-order DLC offering in the US for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron.
The publisher has announced that customers who pre-order the game from either GameStop or EB Games in the US will receive a code to unlock a generation one version of Autobot leader Optimus Prime for use in-game.
The design isn’t a direct G1 port – it differs from the original design – but is certainly a very close fit while staying true to High Moon Studios’ FOC aesthetic.
Also offered are a G1-inspired Megatron Gun and Shockwave Blast Cannon.
Those who pre-order from Amazon, meanwhile, receive a skin to make the game’s all-star combiner Bruticus more accurately represent the character’s G2 colours.
Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will be released in the UK on August 31st.

Platform holder Sony claims the growing appetite for digital content is helping grow the sales of ‘full console’ games.
The format-holder releases some games on PSN and at retail on the same day to make them “as accessible as possible”.
“The world is changing at a rapid rate and the appetite for digital content is growing equally fast,” SCEE’s new release manager Robert Walker told MCV.
“We feel that the best thing to do is allow the gamers to decide how and where they purchase their content. To make that happen, it is our job to make our content as accessible as possible, whether that is at retail or via digital delivery.
“The more accessible content is, the more likely consumers are to purchase it.”
His comments come as Sony America announces a ‘PS3 Ultimate Deals’ promotion, which offers full game downloads for a lower price when bought with extra DLC. Standard PSN users can receive 30 per cent off the overall price, while paying PSN Plus subscribers save 50 per cent overall.
It’s the first time downloadable PS3 games have been priced much lower than their full RRPs, which are usually £49.99. For example, inFamous 2 and its DLC has been cut to $23.79.
Walker added: “How [this space] evolves over time is very difficult to predict.
“But what we can say is that as a business, we take this area very seriously, and have to make sure that we are constantly monitoring both technological advancements, as well as consumer demands.”

Insomniac Games has announced that a new “fun-sized” Ratchet & Clank game for PS3, titled Ratchet & Clank: QForce, is scheduled for release this Autumn to celebrate the franchise’s ten-year anniversary.
In the US, the game will be called Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault and will be available digitally only, while a Blu-ray version is headed to Europe and India.
QForce will return the series to its classic third-person camera perspective. The game will also include multiplayer, but CEO Ted Price didn’t go into any details in his post over at the PlayStation Blog.
While QForce is still a few months away, remastered versions of PS2 classics Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank 2: Locked & Loaded, and Ratchet & Clank 3 will be available via the Ratchet & Clank Trilogy for the PS3 in early June.

The signs are pointing to an acquisition of Gaikai at the hands of Sony.
Yesterday MCV exclusively revealed that Sony was on the cusp of purchasing a high profile cloud gaming firm, thought to be either Gaikai or OnLive.
Now this morning Gaikai has sent out invitations to journalists for what it is heralding as a game-changing announcement.
“Gaikai has some major announcements in store for E3 that have the potential to change the future of video games, game consoles and how we play,” it reads.
It is unlikely that the deal means Sony is abandoning more traditional models for the PS4, but it does mean that it intends to diversify its offering. Expect disc-based games to soon become simply one option amongst many.

Industry veteran and former Sony executive Richard Browne delves into Sony's video game history and asks, "Can they rise again?"
I have to preface this article by noting that I have long term ties to Sony. I was an employee of Psygnosis when Sony bought the Liverpool company back in the early '90s. Because of this tie I've been a long time supporter of Sony, and some have even deemed me a fanboy, which to some extent I probably am, or was. You'll forgive me if any of that comes out here.
Pre-Playstation
Sony's rise to prominence in the gaming business began in the early '90s when they entered into an agreement with Nintendo to produce a CD-Rom drive for the Super Nintendo. At the time I was working at Psygnosis, and as pioneers in the CD-Rom field we were early into discussions around the format. Psygnosis was working very quietly on a Star Wars CD game with Lucasarts; it was in its formative stages but the work the company had done with CD technology to date put them in good stead (alas, the contract to do the game would never get signed). When the SNES CD drive became a possibility, Psygnosis started working with DMA Design in Dundee (who had been highly successful partners from Menace to Blood Money to the infamous Lemmings) to try and emulate how the system would work.
By CES of January 1992 DMA had an emulated demo of the Star Wars game running on a SNES with a mega-cartridge dropped on top of it to simulate the CD drive and some aspect of its immense capacity. The demo was pretty spectacular, as was the falling out that Sony and Nintendo subsequently had over how their business relationship would work. As history will report, Nintendo ditched the concept of CDs and Sony went to work on building their own games console to take on its formerly proposed partner.
"The real genius of the PlayStation was its marketing. Sony realized that people who played games were growing up; it wasn't just a kids-focused business anymore"
Psygnosis and Sony had started business dealings in other parts of their respective organizations, in Sony's case through Imagesoft. Psygnosis worked on a number of titles through this relationship - Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Last Action Hero (in which Arnold Schwarzenegger was infamously not allowed to be seen holding guns), and Mickey Manic with Traveller's Tales to name just a few - but it was when Sony decided to enter the hardware business that the relationship became more formal.
PlayStation
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe was just one bloke - one Phil Harrison - but clearly Sony understood it would need more than just Phil on the ground to build a console division. With that in mind, and with other potential suitors waiting in the wings, Sony made the decision to purchase Psygnosis and put its joint MDs Jonathan Ellis and Ian Hetherington in charge of the new-found company. Initially, SCEE was set up to be a Publisher; rather smartly Sony realized that to sell hardware it would need a sales and distribution channel and with Psygnosis as a basis they could build and grow just that. For several months Phil would travel up to Liverpool for the week to work at our offices though in time Ian and Jonathan would open Sony's first London base on Golden Square from which the Company would work. SCEE began releasing a slate of cartridge games across Europe and the infrastructure began to grow.
In the meantime Sony Japan had been hard at work creating the PSX as it was well known, and relatively early on in its life a prototype appeared amongst much secrecy in Liverpool. When people refer to that first machine as a photocopier they really aren't exaggerating overly. It was large, noisy and ran very hot. Nothing ever changes with prototype hardware it seems. The Advanced Technology Group at Psygnosis (of which I was part) started to try playing with it immediately before running into what could only be described as a slight problem.
The only way to program the system was through NeXT workstations. We didn't have any. In fact most of us had never even heard of them. Through some pioneering research one of the team found two existed in England, at a Sony dealership in Basingstoke. They were quickly dispatched to the Psygnosis offices so the team could actually start to figure the machine out. What was clear though was this was going to be a problem, there was no way this machine was going to go mainstream if the programming toolset for it was almost impossible to acquire.
Fortune sometimes smiles and fate sometimes pulls through. Not long before the whole Sony Psygnosis marriage occurred we'd been looking to sign up the best and the brightest 3rd party developers in the UK. Andrew Spencer was one such man we signed up, we worked with Archer McLean on Super Dropzone, and I'd been in touch with the guys at the Assembly Line because I had been incredibly impressed with their work on Xenon 2 - and Adrian Stephens was working on this amazing Stunt Island game with Disney.

Dead Space 3's imminently expected official announcement has received its latest harbinger in the form of a set of screenshots making their way through the internet. The screens hint at co-op gameplay for the latest installment in the blue-spine tingling thriller series.
Playing into the authenticity of the screens is that they appear to feature Earthgov Sergeant John Carver, recently introduced in the "Dead Space Graphic Novel Short."
EA's E3 press conference is scheduled for 1PM Pacific on Monday, June 4. Don't be surprised if necromorphs are featured prominently at some point during the presentation.

Amazingly, Zipper Interactive servers for SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs have continued to be active since the game's original debut on the PlayStation 2 in 2002, meaning that crazy peoplededicated fans with online adapter-equipped PS2s have been able to keep playing for nearly 10 years. Now though, since Zipper Interactive doesn't exist anymore and everything, the servers for four PS2 SOCOM games and four PSP SOCOM titles will be taken offline at the end of August.
PlayStation 2 SOCOMs I, II, and III (as well as SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault) will be going dark, as will the PSP various SOCOM titles,Fireteam Bravo (I, II and III) and SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Tactical Strke.
If this outage affects your regular gaming routine, we offer our most sincere condolences. Also, we'd like to point out that many thousands of games have been released since 2002, some of which you might enjoy. Perhaps this will be a good opportunity to go check some of 'em out?
