Becoming an independent PlayStation 4 developer is easy, Sony's Adam Boyes tells us: "You just have to sign up." The PlayStation VP of publisher and developer relations was explaining what the company has done to woo indie devs. Half the job was just making developer programs more accessible. "Before GDC last year we didn't even have a website where you could go and find out about it, but now we have a very well thought out process." Boyes says that anyone who qualifies as an independent developer can get a free (loaner) developer kit, too -- a similar deal applies to Project Morpheus, too.

Sony has recruited ad agency Work Club help push PlayStation Plus across Europe.
The agency will 'rebrand and reposition' the PS Plus service, according to CampaignLive.
For those that don't know, PS Plus is the subscription service available for PS3, PS4 and PS Vita that allows for online gaming on PS4, and offers a range of free games across all platforms. It's grown dramatically since the launch of PS4, but isn't as widespread on Sony's consoles as Xbox Live has been across Microsoft's machines.
The European advertising agency for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe had been 180 Amsterdam since 2011.

It's been two decades since Formula One racing champion Ayrton Senna died during a Grand Prix race at Italy's Imola Circuit, and to memorialize the grim anniversary, the developers behind Gran Turismo 6 have unveiled a two-pronged tribute.
Pay a visit to the Gran Turismo website and you'll find a new section dedicated to Senna. Currently the site's focus is on the Ayrton Senna Institute, a non-profit dedicated to educating the youth of Brazil. Here you'll find an overview of the Institute's work, including a short film directed by the same auteur responsible for the visually striking Gran Turismo documentary Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide. As May rolls along, the site will be updated with two slideshows depicting important moments in Senna's career.
Alongside this web content, the month-long Senna memorial will also see the debut of "in-game racing content only available in Gran Turismo 6," though neither Sony nor the Gran Turismo team offer further details on what to expect.

In sad news for fans of the frenetic multiplayer gunplay found in Borderlands 2, it has been revealed that the game's upcoming Vita incarnation will only support a maximum of two players during co-operative play.
"We checked in with the SCEA Third Party Production team, who confirmed that while they strived to include four-player co-op in the game, they made a decision late in their development cycle to focus on providing the best two-player-only co-op experience possible," a Sony representative wrote on the PlayStation.blog. "As a result, the maximum co-operative player count forBorderlands 2 on PS Vita is capped at two."
While this is disappointing, players can look forward to the wealth of content otherwise found in the handheld Borderlands 2. Not only are saves cross-compatible with the PlayStation 3 version of Borderlands 2, but the Vita game includes six of the DLC packs released for its console counterpart after launch. Plus, online multiplayer is available for anyone suddenly depressed that they can't shoot up Pandora with three nearby pals.

PS4 and PS Vita are regularly lauded as two of the most developer-friendly platforms in the console business, but Sony's Adam Boyes wants PlayStation to be the most simple and accessible platform possible.
Adam Boyes joined Sony as a dev relations exec in 2012In a newly published interview with CVG, the developer relations executive said "I would like [PlayStation] to be the easiest, most accessible place for anyone that's making great games to come out, and have their games come to the broadest amount of people".
Valve's Steam platform, as well as Apple's App Store, are widely accepted as the most hassle-free platforms to release on. While iOS publishing requires zero concept approval, Valve recently suggested it wants Steam to be fully open too. Whether Sony would take steps this far is uncertain, but Boyes made it clear he wants Sony to open up to as many indies as possible.
Speaking after a Sony press event on Wednesday, where Boyes revealed that more than 1000 independent developers are now licensed to self-publish on Sony platforms, the PlayStation executive described indies as "the heartbeat of the industry".
He said that supplying PS4 development kits to indies long before the console's general release, coupled with the system's PC-like architecture, are key to why certain developers have had a relatively easier time porting their games over.
"TowerFall alone took about eight weeks for them to port over. Octodad took eight or 10 weeks for them to bring over. So it's just making it easier for developers."
While questions regarding possible indie over-saturation were discussed on the latest CVG Off The Record podcast, Boyes believes indies help create the broadest church of content on PS4.
"For PlayStation it means a rich, diverse breadth of content. From the very top, big Call of Duty and Destiny and Battlefield and Maddens of the world, all the way to Starwhal: Just the Tip or Nidhogg."
He added that key to the company's success is its openness and sincerity when engaging with indie developers.
"I always like to say when people ask, 'oh, is it just a shtick?' No, talk to the developers. I'll tell you what I feel and believe, but the reality of it is that it comes from them. The day that we aren't good at this, and the day that we are just blowing smoke, is the day that they'll tell the world and the gig will be up."

Activision says Call of Duty: Ghosts is the best selling game across PS4 and Xbox One, despite not mentioning sales figures for the cross-gen title.
Executive Eric Hirshberg revealed that the latest entry in its first-person shooting franchise was the second best-selling title across North America and Europe through the first quarter of 2014, bested only by Skylanders SWAP Force.
Call of Duty Ghosts is "the number one selling game on next gen consoles, life to date", he told investors during a
Activision Blizzard brought in $1.11 billion in net revenue in the first quarter of its 2014 fiscal year, according to a report to investors released Tuesday. Net sales for the three-month period that ended on March 31 exceeded their expected results but came down 16 percent from their $1.32 billion in the same period last year.
Net profit fell considerably, however, down to $293 million for the quarter. Last year the same figure was $456 million.
Activision also did not address overall sales number for Ghosts, whichhad a slower launch than Black Ops 2.
"Our better-than-expected performance was driven by record digital sales in Blizzard Entertainment's franchises, including World of Warcraft, Diablo, and Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft, a new free-to-play game which had already registered more than 10 million users as of its March 11, 2014 launch on Windows and Mac, in addition to Activision Publishing's Skylanders and Call of Duty franchises," Activision CEO Bobby Kotick said in a release.
Activision's product sales reached $769 million in total, down from $990 million last year. Despite products being down overall, sales through digital online channels managed to improve slightly to $379 million from $377 million last year.
The firm announced that World of Warcraft's subscriber numbers slipped by 700,000, dropping to 7.6 million in total. More than 1 million copies of Warlords of Draenor, the MMO's next expansion, have been pre-ordered.
The pack will be released "no later than December 20, 2014."

Look, we're not gonna review the PlayStation Vita again. Promise. Three times is enough, no? We think so too. But we do want to tell you that the second version of the PlayStation Vita is finally available in North America today -- it even comes in a bundle with Borderlands 2 for $200 -- and we want you to feel safe and secure in your purchase, should you choose to make one. So, is it worth it? In short: yes, yes it is. It's thinner; it's got rounded edges; and Sony's cut a ton of fat from the price as well. Head below for our full video review of the Japanese model, then jump into the Engadget database for specs, reviews from other publications and to discuss which games you're most excited about. It's Luftrausers, right? Come on, admit it.

Research firm also expects Kinect to be unbundled from Xbox One and physical game sales to decline 45% compared to last gen
International Data Corporation (IDC) is preparing to publish its latest console forecast and the research firm has given GamesIndustry International an exclusive preview of the report. There are several key takeaways to note, including Sony's dominance of the new console cycle, Microsoft's need to unbundle Kinect, and a general decline in the physical retail side of the games business.
IDC predicts that Sony's PlayStation 4 will have the single biggest share of the market in 2016 with 51 million sold globally. Microsoft hasn't been faring quite as well, but IDC believes Xbox One will make a serious comeback, particularly in North America where it's forecasted to take the lead. This will be spurred on by unbundling Kinect, IDC said.
"The presumed unbundling of Kinect and Xbox One, which should facilitate rough price parity between it and the PS4, should lead to a spike in Xbox One sales; assuming the console and sensor are unbundled in 2015, IDC expects Xbox One to recover and emerge with the largest installed base of any console in North America by the end of 2016," the firm explained.
Meanwhile, Nintendo's Wii U is expected to finally receive "the equivalent of a $50 price cut worldwide in late 2014 or early 2015," but it won't make a serious dent in the installed base gap between Wii U and the competition.
Looking at the bigger picture, the retail component of the video game business is expected to see continued declines, IDC said. IDC's forecast states that, together, eighth generation consoles will generate about 10 percent less retail revenue from console hardware and disc-based games than seventh generation (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii) consoles did combined through their first six years on the market.
That being said, total eighth generation console hardware revenue actually is projected to come in above the comparable seventh generation total thanks to higher average selling prices (ASPs). It's a different story, however, for the physical disc business, which IDC forecasts will see 45 percent fewer discs sold to retailers in the first six years compared to the seventh generation physical games sales.
It's clear that more and more games are being purchased digitally, and the good news is that digital sales will keep the industry healthy. "Given current trends, more than 50 percent of total game and direct app/service spending across all consoles will come through digital channels by 2019 (just over the edge of our forecast window)," said Lewis Ward, IDC research manager. "Microsoft and Sony will get there faster than Nintendo; the projection mixes all game/service spending on big 3 OEM platforms."
In order for the industry to match the sales of the seventh generation, digital will have to continue to grow - and it appears that it will. "If digital games and related online console revenue streams are included in the picture... the outlook for eighth generation consoles improves substantially. The inclusion of digital console game spending, subscription revenue and other content/service/app purchases billed through online eighth generation console stores pushes total revenue up to within a few percent of the seventh gen total through the first six years of availability," noted IDC. "Rising digital revenue is forecast to nearly offset the fall in disc-based revenue."
IDC's 73-page report, Worldwide Video Game and Entertainment Console Hardware and Packaged Software 2014-2018 Forecast, will be available this week.

The local multiplayer sportsfest is $15 Cross-Buy with PS3, but if you want the Cross-Buy feature you have to buy it on PS3.
Moving onto PS3, in addition to Sportsfriends, Bound by Flame ($40) and Titan Attacks, there's Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi for $34 and the All-in DLC pack for F1 Race Stars ($8). Also, Plus members get Pro Evo 2014 as an Instant Game Collection freebie. Oh, and not forgetting Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne, and that's confirmed as a PS2 Classic.
The sportiness continues on Vita with Football Manager Classic 2014 ($40), andMahjong Royal Towers & Mahjong World Contest Bundle ($8) - Majohong is a sport, right? Handheld owners can also grab Titan Attacks, God of War Collection ($30) and Broken Sword 5 ($17).

The DualShock 4's light bar caused quite a fuss when the system launched because it was so darn bright and obtrusive. But you know why it was there? According to SCEE senior designer Jed Ashforth, "it was for tracking for VR."
Ashforth spilled the beans on Sony's once secret plans for VR in an interview withTechradar. "The tracking light... it was our department that said we need that on," Ashforth explained."When all these things were coming out six months ago and everyone was going 'it's reflecting in my TV,' we were going 'oh no' because we couldn't tell anyone what it was for."On the plus side, a recent system update allows players to dim the light bar, while other games like The Playroom use its glowing feature in conjunction with the PlayStation Eye camera to track the position of your hands. The colour-coded controllers also work as a nifty Move substitute for Johann Sebastian Joust, so it's not all bad. It was just confusing as its true purpose had yet to be revealed.

Mojang hopes to repeat last year’s feat and have Minecraft sit atop of the UK retail charts all summer.
A physical version of the construction game is being released for PlayStation 3 on May 14th, with versions on PS4 and Vita set to arrive by September.
The game has already dominated the No,1 position in the PSN charts since it launched last December.
Last summer, Microsoft released a boxed version of Minecraft for Xbox 360, which again launched well after the digital version. However, the title went on to dominate the physical charts throughout the summer and to date has sold well over half a million units in the UK alone, according to MCV retail sources.
Mojang tells MCV that the popularity of Minecraft on disc is not a surprise when you consider the gifting market. And says it is looking to expand its retail options.
“Considering that Minecraft for Xbox has been selling really well on disc, we see that there is still had huge demand for discs and we think that releasing a disc version of Minecraft for the PS3 will be huge too,” Kaplan said.
“We try to make sure that our fans are able to engage with our game wherever they are and this is an other way of making sure we fulfill the need.”
He added: “Our physical business will continue growing but will never surpass our digital sales.
“The reason why it will continue growing is because there is still the gifting option, where it is pretty nice to get a package or something, rather than a code emailed to you.
“We are also going to expand the countries where we have prepaid cards so I think all in all it will be great for the
players to have access to various payment methods that they like.”

The upcoming PS4 game Driveclub is making waves for reasons that have nothing to do with its gameplay or development status. In a new video, the company has spelled out its free trial and upgrade policies, and the requirements are a doozy. First, the good news — PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to download a demo of the game that contains a few maps and one trial area, India. If you choose to upgrade that version, the full title will cost you $50. Here's the catch — that purchase is tied to your Playstation Plus subscription. In other words, if you stop paying Sony the official $49.95 a year for PlayStation Plus, you lose your $50 game. This is completely at odds with how PlayStation Plus membership is supposed to work. It contradicts Sony's official FAQ, which states that: 'Any content you purchase with a Plus discount is yours to keep, regardless of you membership status.'"

Five years after it debuted on the Xbox 360, developer Tozai Games has announced plans to release a PlayStation 3 version of R-Type Dimensions on May 20.
Like its Xbox 360 predecessor, the PlayStation 3's R-Type Dimensions is an upgraded compilation featuring both R-Type and R-Type 2, two classic games which stand as pillars of the side-scrolling shoot-em-up genre. While arcade purists can opt to play either game in their original, pixel-pocked forms, R-Type Dimensions also offers new, high-definition, polygonal graphics and remastered sound. Additionally, Tozai has added an Infinite Mode, which grants players an unending supply of ships, as well as a Level Select for those who want to practice their shoot-em-up skills on a specific stage.
Most crucially, R-Type Dimensions includes modern network code, allowing players to blast aliens alongside a friend from anywhere in the world. Local co-op is also included, just in case that players happen to be sharing a couch.

Alongside Capcom's financial report for the 2013 fiscal year yesterday, in which it revealed an increase in net income by 15.9 percent year-over-year, it also offered some projections for the upcoming financial year (ending March 31, 2015). Given the continued success of its Monster Hunter brand, Capcom projected sales of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate to reach 3.9 million units in North America, Europe, Japan and other Asian countries. The game will reach the west in early 2015.
Additionally, Capcom reported that its strategy for mobile includes the launch of Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on iOS this month. The PSP game went free for PlayStation Plus users in March. Capcom also plans to launch another mobile game in the series this year called Monster Hunter Smart. The company noted strategies for PC in Japan and other parts of Asia, namely by introducing the beta phase of Monster Hunter Online as well as Breath of Fire 6 this summer. The latter was announced in August 2013 for PC, iOS and Android, whereas the former is the result of an April 2013 partnership between Capcom and Tencent to bring the free-to-play MMO to PC players in China.
Lastly, Capcom mentioned plans to "develop titles exclusively for online games," specifically mentioning Deep Down for PS4, a free-to-play game first announced in September.

PlayStation 4 racer DriveClub will include micro-transactions so you can pay to unlock cars quicker, Sony has revealed. How much?
But you won't be able to exchange real-world money for lumps of in-game currency, game director Paul Rustchynsky told IGN, so the amount people can spend is limited. What DriveClub will offer is merely a "shortcut", he argued."In Driveclub you earn Fame, and as you earn Fame, you level up. Every time you level up, we give you another car. There's no double gating or anything along those lines, you're given the car straight away without having to do anything else. The only thing we do have is a couple of shortcuts."If you want to unlock a car immediately, you can pay to unlock that car straight away but it's not a consumable microtransaction," Rustchynsky continued. "We don't let people buy Fame, for example and spend lots and lots. The idea is if you want to shortcut things you can do - it's identical to what we did in Motorstorm RC. So if you played that, you know what we're doing here."Sony has yet to reveal how much cars will cost to purchase separately.DriveClub will include five countries to race through - India, Chile, Norway, the United Kingdom and Canada - with 11 tracks available in each. The first of these regions will be available with the game's PlayStation Plus edition, free for those who subscribe to the service. You'll then be able to upgrade to the full version for a discount and - after a quick policy change - keep the game for good whether you remain a Plus subscriber or not.

Vita is home to a bounty of indies, but its selection of triple-A games is lacking.
Sony has acknowledged that this is in part because of the economics inherent to selling games on the portable system.
Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, responded to a comment from a fan on the PlayStation Blog who asked for more games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary on the system.
"The economics simply don't work with the traditional process," Mesa said. "We have to do something different to get AAA games on Vita.
"We accomplished it to a certain degree by making PS4 games work on Vita via remote play. PS Now will be another way, streaming PS3 games on Vita. I can't wait until PS Now is out on Vita - I hope you'll try out the experience and let me know what you think."
Mesa said PS Now will be enabled on PS Vita "later this year".
Revealed at CES in January, PS Now will initially stream PS3 games (other platforms to follow) to PlayStation systems, Bravia TVs and, in the future, other Sony and non-Sony devices.
Sony previously said it would launch the service in North America this summer. It has been reported that the PS Now European launch won't occur until the first quarter of 2015.

Already paid up for Sony's PlayStation 4? Or are you waiting on a certainblockbuster title before you make the move to the next gen? We don't blame you. However, the PS4's ancestor -- that slightly curved obelisk sitting under your TV, the one with half an inch of dust -- still has a few tricks in it. While we wait for Sony to perfect its streaming tech, there's still no way to play PS3 titles on Console No. 4, unless it gets a fancy facelift... and you buy it again. So, we turn back to our faithful PlayStation 3. Born in 2006, eight years is a pretty good term for a games console. But maybe you don't want your time with it to be over. We don't either, and have found a few ways to breathe new life into your gradually graying PS3.

It's poetic that Among the Sleep is coming to a device named after the Greek god of dreams (AKA Laurence Fishburne). Developer Krillbite is now bringing the first-person horror told through two-year-old eyes to PS4, where it'll feature support for Project Morpheus, Sony's VR headset.
Krillbite's psychological nightmare was already confirmed for PC, Mac and Linux with Oculus Rift support, following a successful fundraising campaignlast year. The Norwegian studio is working to ensure Kickstarter backers "get a fair deal" on a PS4 version, but there are no details at present. There's no word on release details either - Among the Sleep was originally due in Q4 2013 - but Krillbite does say development is nearly completed.
Krillbite's scary soiree caught our attention with its Amnesia-inspired environmental horror, all at the eye level of a toddler. As Joystiq's Richard Mitchell put it in his preview, "Among the Sleep is clearly rooted more in psychology than jump scares and gore. For sure, the premise is novel, but what's really impressive is how effectively Among the Sleep leverages fear through atmosphere and the innate physical limitations of a child. Perhaps even more impressive is that it made me love a teddy bear within the span of half an hour."

Sony's Watch Dogs product page no longer lists 1080p or 60fps as part of the game's selling points. This weekend, the PlayStation site listed Watch Dogs for PS4 as follows: "Hack everything as you make your way through Chicago's underground as you experience Watch Dogs in a way that only PS4 can provide, at 60 Frames Per Second in 1080p." Now, the final prepositional phrase of that description is gone.
There's no word on why the specs were extinguished, especially since the wider internet already caught wind of them. Maybe Sony's site was hacked by a savvy Chicagoan techno-wizard with a baseball cap and a smartphone. Maybe.
Ubisoft hasn't provided any other targets for Watch Dogs' resolution and framerate on PS4 (or Xbox One). Watch Dogs is due out on May 27 for PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3.

PlanetSide 2 creative director Matt Higby has confirmed that the MMO shooter will run at 1080p on Sony's PlayStation 4 console, IGN reports. Higby made the announcement during a stream of the game, noting that optimization for the console version is ongoing.
PlanetSide 2 was expected to land on PS4 in early 2014, but we've yet to hear an update on when we can expect to load up and roll out with thousands of other soldiers in Sony's sci-fi universe. IGN also reports that Higby said hands-on time with the game will be available at E3, so we might just have to be patient and see what's said next month.
Either that or we solve our problems the PlanetSide 2 way and roll up to Sony with a couple hundred tanks and heavily-armed aircraft, but we think that might get us in trouble. Also, we don't own any tanks and/or heavily-armed aircraft.

An update coming to Gran Turismo 6 will allow players to relive the legacy of Brazilian racer Ayrton Senna, Sony and Polyphony Digital have announced. The content, which includes one of Senna's first go-karts and the Lotus 97T Senna drove during his second Formula 1 season in 1985, will be available for free on May 27.
The update also includes two Senna Challenges, which test a player's ability to best Senna's times on the same courses he drove in '85. Those that earn bronze or better in a Senna Challenge will earn the Lotus 97T for free, but those that would rather skip the whole "challenge" part can buy the car using in-game currency.
Kazunori Yamauchi, creator of the Gran Turismo series, called Senna a "personal hero" in the associated press release. "I am honored to be able to introduce him to the younger generation of racing fans through Gran Turismo," he said. Earlier this month, Sony and Polyphony released an update to the Gran Turismo site honoring Senna and the Ayrton Senna Institute.

That's a lot of violent, reckless criminals: Rockstar and Take-Two have shipped more than 33 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5, Take-Two announced in its fiscal year 2014 report.
"Grand Theft Auto 5 was the best-selling console video game of 2013 in North America, Latin America and Europe combined," the report says. "To date, Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold-in more than 33 million units."
Sales of Grand Theft Auto 5 passed $1 billion in its first three days at retail. This is the first mention of actual units shipped.

There are few surprises in Sony's full-year earnings figures, especially since we've already covered the huge loss it suffered in pulling out of the PC business. However, although overall profit is heavily in the red, the detailed numbers show healthy gains in precisely the two departments where we'd hope to see them: Gaming-related sales shot up 53 percent on the back of the PS4, while Xperia smartphone sales rose by around 20 percent to just shy of 40 million units for the year ended March 31st. Sony doesn't specify phone sales by model, but the year-over-year gain strikes us as a fair and just reward for the manufacturer's excellentXperia Z1 and Z1 Compact (shown above). Unfortunately, none of this success looks likely to fix Sony's deeper ailments any time soon, because the company is still forecasting further heavy losses throughout 2014. It predicts a net loss of 50 billion yen over the coming year, whereas most pundits had expected the ship to be righted and profitable by then.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag shipped 11 million copies to date, including digital sales, Ubisoft revealed in its full-year 2013-2014 earnings report. That's one million more units than Ubisoft sent to retail as of February.
It's the latest in the publisher's successful series, which achieved 73 million in sales as of last month. Ubisoft's next rooftop-running, throat-slitting game isAssassin's Creed: Unity, which was announced in March. The game takes place in Paris during the French Revolution of the 18th century, as was seeminglyforetold through a scene in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood.
"We are extremely pleased that Assassin's Creed has become the fourth-biggest franchise in the industry," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said during the publisher's earnings call today, adding that the Assassin's Creed development team has been progressively growing the brand "into a regular 10 million-plus elite franchise."

Far Cry 4 has been confirmed by a Ubisoft financial report for the fiscal year, and is expected to hit PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on November 18, 2014. The game will take place in Kyrat, a fictional region of the Himalayas, which suffers under the reign of a self-appointed king.
"The year's performance will be led by five games," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said. "Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Just Dance, The Crew and Watch Dogs." Being this is an official report from the company, we can take this to be an official confirmation of the game, officially.
Still, it's not that big of a shock - back in February there was a mounting pile of evidence for the game's existence, and considering the 6 million unitsFar Cry 3shipped and the 1 million sales of its spin-off, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, it's no wonder that Ubisoft would return to the brand.
Pre-orders for the game are now live, and those who throw their cash down early will receive an upgrade to the Limited Edition, which comes with three single-player missions centered around Hurk, a character from Far Cry 3. Players who pre-order will also receive Hurk's signature weapon, a harpoon gun called "The Impaler."

Publisher GungHo Online America continues its campaign to bring under-the-radar, import-only classics to North America, announcing that six more Japanese-language PSOne games will hit the PlayStation Network soon.
The company's upcoming re-releases include the Recettear-like item shop RPGDungeon Shoutenkai: Densetsu no Ken Hajimemashita, pinball game Dragon Beat Legend of Pinball, terrain-shaping planetary simulation Neo Planet, oddball rock-paper-scissors action-RPG Tokyo 23ku Seifuku-Wars and idol-raising strategy games Heroine Dream and Heroine Dream 2.
GungHo hopes to "bring over as many PSOne Classics as possible," and previously spearheaded North American releases for games like Zanac X Zanacand Makeruna Makendo 2. GungHo's PSOne import games are priced at $5.99 apiece.

During today's record-revenue Take-Two financial call, CEO Strauss Zelnick acknowledged the significant contribution of Rockstar Games and the 33 million units shipped of Grand Theft Auto 5, while teasing an unannounced release from the company.
"We're excited about what [Rockstar] have in store for the new generation of systems this fiscal year," said Zelnick, not providing any further clarification throughout the rest of the hour-long conference call. The company's fiscal year will conclude in March, 2015.
This more than likely just refers to a next-gen facelift for GTA 5, but we're going to push logic and reason aside for a moment to wish on a star for Red Dead Redemption 2 (Redder Deader Redemption) on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Heck, we'd even take a new Rockstar Table Tennis on Wii U.

The Vita 2000's journey around the world takes it to Australia on June 4, Sony announced today. It's taken it a little longer than 80 days to make it from Japan to Australia, with stop-offs as North America and Europe along the way, but it'll finally head downunder in three weeks' time with a price tag AUD$270.
The new model is 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the original, and it has a LCD screen. The battery life is upped to 4 to 6 hours for gaming and 7 hours for video, and there's also a new micro USB Slot and a 1GB internal memory card.
After launching in Japan back in October 2013, the slim Vita finally hit American shelves earlier this month, and you can pick it up now with a copy ofBorderlands 2 for $200.

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited is coming to North American Vitas on August 12, before waddling its way to Europe two weeks later on August 29. The news comes via NIS America, who've just opened up pre-orders on the goodies-stuffed limited edition box set.
As per tradition, the Vita conversion of the 2011 tactics-RPG features a number of extras, including a brand new "scenario" adventure and more than 50 of the DLC add-ons for the original game. No matter the extras, our review of the original PS3 incarnation suggests fans of the series who've not yet playedDisgaea 4 are in for a treat:
"As another worthwhile and entertaining entry in the franchise, Disgaea 4 is still just another Disgaea game. Fans will love it for everything it is, while detractors will ignore it for all that it isn't. This is a game, and series, that isn't out to win over gamers by changing its stripes -- though its fans probably wouldn't have it any other way."

Sony's early dominance of the next-gen hardware race in the US shows no sign of abating.
NPD has revealed that PS4 outsold Xbox One in April – that's the fourth month in a row that Microsoft's had to settle for second place.
PS4's actual monthly sales weren't revealed, although Microsoft said that 115k Xbox Ones were sold in the period. That's around a third of the machine's March sales. Note that Xbox 360 never sold as few units in the US in April aside from this year, now it's up against its younger brother.
That Xbox One price drop can't arrive soon enough, especially as its early announcement is likely to heavily dent May sales numbers.
More positive for Microsoft is the fact that “life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales,” according to NPD analyst Liam Callahan.
“PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40% compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months. Wii U software sales were up over last year by over 80%.”
Microsoft separately confirmed that it also sold 71k Xbox 360s and 2.2m 360 games, as well as 447k Xbox One games. The Xbox platform overall still commands the majority of the US market – 53 per cent, to be exact. Xbox One also boasts a very decent 3-to-1 software attach rate.
Sony, meanwhile, says that demand for its machine continues to outstrip supply. Microsoft last month said that was not the case for Xbox One.
Overall, the US games market was up 17 per cent at $580.3m year-on-year with hardware up 76 per cent. In isolation console hardware was up 120 per cent. Software sales fell ten per cent to $227.9.

It shouldn't surprise you to hear that the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Wii U require large amounts of electricity. What might come as a shock is just how much of that juice is spent while the consoles are resting in standby mode.
According to a report from the Natural Resources Defense Council, over the course of a year the latest generation of consoles will dedicate more energy use to streaming video and the barebones functionality of standby mode than they will playing actual video games. The NRDC claims the Xbox One as the biggest energy hog of the bunch, citing its voice command functionality which allows users to bring the machine out of standby with a quick vocal command. Of course, this requires the machine to be constantly "listening," and that requires a 24/7 supply of electricity.
Sony doesn't escape the NRDC's notice, as the report claims the PlayStation 4 uses inefficient charging methods to power its controllers. The Wii U is efficient when compared to its console counterparts, but remains a far larger drain on the average home's electricity than almost any other appliance.
"Gamers shouldn't be locked into higher electric bills for the lifetime of their consoles just because manufacturers haven't optimized the performance of their products," stated NRDC director of high-tech energy efficiency Pierre Delforge, whose team lead the study.
"[I]f Microsoft and Sony follow NRDC's recommendations, they could cut the new consoles' electricity use by one-fourth beyond current projections through software and hardware optimizations, saving U.S. consumers $250 million on their annual utility bills and enough energy to power all the households in San Jose, America's 10th-largest city," Delforge added.

Vault Hunters just set out for a fresh round of loot in this month's Vita release of Borderlands 2, but they all returned to the hunt as measly, level-one adventurers, regardless of whether or not they had Eridium gathered in a PS3 save file. The on-the-go romp through Pandora will eventually offer cross-save support, but the involved update has had vague launch dates as well as amissed estimate of yesterday. However, a tweet from Gearbox head Randy Pitchford suggests the patch will arrive on Tuesday, with Pitchford stating the new deadline felt "more reliable" than the last that he was given.
The Vita version was developed by Iron Galaxy Studios and published by Sony, so while it makes sense for Vita owners to want a great, time-saving feature, impatience with Pitchford or Gearbox is a bit unwarranted.

The Last of Us: Remastered isn't going to drastically overhaul Ellie and Joel's venture through clicker-infested environments. It might not even use new features like the DualShock 4's touchpad, though Naughty Dog is toying with ideas to see if any are worth pursuing. What it certainly will do is look better than its PS3 origin story, thanks to the boost in power gained from movin' on up to the PS4. Creative director Neil Druckmann recently chatted with Edge about this summer's improved port, explaining the team's approach to getting the most from a platform for any game.
"We always build the best possible assets and then we can make the call when things aren't fitting onscreen or in the frame buffer or in memory," Druckmann explained. "That way we can pick and choose what we need to emphasize in a moment, and where there's a compromise on what can [be more detailed] or reduced to a lower quality."
In the case of the PS3 version, the character models used in cutscenes were more detailed than in-game models, and environmental objects could be swapped out with lower-quality counterparts depending on a scene's focus. In contrast, the PS4 version should be able to sidestep most of the technical hurdles involved with dated hardware. The port still involves rebuilding assets though, given that the original version's engine and much of the project's work was tailor made for the PS3.
Though the to-be-bundled "Left Behind" DLC will be unlockable after completing Remastered, new audio commentary for cutscenes will make its debut and be available from the start. Recordings will feature dialog between Druckmann and Ellie and Joel's voice actors, Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker, respectively.

The Last of Us was one of the last major projects for the PlayStation 3. The code optimization done by development studio Naughty Dog was a real technical achievement — making graphics look modern and impressive on a 7-year-old piece of hardware. Now, they're in the process of porting it to the much more capable PS4, which will end up being a technical accomplishment in its own right. Creative director Neil Druckmann said, 'Just getting an image onscreen, even an inferior one with the shadows broken, lighting broken and with it crashing every 30 seconds that took a long time. These engineers are some of the best in the industry and they optimized the game so much for the PS3's SPUs specifically. It was optimized on a binary level, but after shifting those things over [to PS4] you have to go back to the high level, make sure the [game] systems are intact, and optimize it again. I can't describe how difficult a task that is. And once it's running well, you're running the [versions] side by side to make sure you didn't screw something up in the process, like physics being slightly off, which throws the game off, or lighting being shifted and all of a sudden it's a drastically different look. That's not 'improved' any more; that's different. We want to stay faithful while being better.

PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows and Linux. Project attempts to allow PS2 code to be executed on your computer, thus meaning you can put a PS2 DVD or CD into your computers drive, and boot it up!
Here's relevant changes from latest builds:
|
pcsx2: improve the GS read fifo API
1/ initReadFifo will be first called on the GS thread (openGL can only be done on the GS thread)
2/ readFifo will be called on the EE thread. It is not safe too access eeMem from GS
because of memory is virtual
Fix "recent" regression (crash) on Kingdom heart and others game too.
pcsx2: try to ensure better sync with FIFO read call
First wait will ensure correctness of GS register.
2nd wait will ensure that the GS fifo read call is finished
gzip-iso: Speedup some cases by using more memory. Significant speedup on some cases by using roughly another index size in ram. The ram usage is now up to roughly cache size plus 2x index size.
This patch adds another index-like direct access point for each span we've visited. This replaces the single z-state which was used for sequential extraction, and does the same, but now it can continue sequentially on most previously visited spans instead of only from the last read. |
Visit project homepage for further information and grab the latest build (until the buildbot starts working again) from official thread at PCSX2 forums.

Get ready to dust off your PSPs for this amazing lamecraft mod, called Minecraft PSP Edition! Minecraft is a sandbox indie game originally created by Swedish developer Markus “Notch” Persson and later developed and published by Team Mojang. It allows players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D generated world.
This homebrew was originally developed by PSP Genesis Competition (2011) winner Drakon. The cool thing is 10 days after its first release; there was already a massive community around this homebrew. However it’s still being developed today, in 2014! PSP Scene is dead you say? Sorry but not here.
This mod is an open source project, being developed by me and my fellow friend, woolio. I started working on this mod myself, until version 1.2. Just moments later, a person called ‘woolio’ messaged me and requested to join me in developing this mod. Ever since then we’ve been making some sweet progress.
Now now I’m not really a fan of expressing my own projects in the front page, but I’m doing it cause of what makes this mod different from the rest. I also would like to thank developer s4inex, for his “s4inex craft” mod. Our mod is based on an early revision of s4inex craft. (That is v1.2) We didn’t wanna copy all his contents so we decided to start from an early build. Anyways here’s what makes this mod fascinating:
■Includes a seed generating option.
■It includes destroying animation.
■Various blocks, and updated textures replicating Minecraft for PC!
■Includes crafting, and a pretty neat pop up inventory.
■A wide variety of changes from the original Lamecraft.

Lately everyone’s been so busy with the Vita scene that we’ve been forgetting about the PSP’s existence. It’s 2014, and homebrews are still coming! uOFW is one of my favorites, and I’m sure many of you would also be interested. This project aims to reverse engineer parts of the PSP’s kernel. This’ll help us to know more about how Operating Systems work in general, and allow us to run any unsigned content without having to sign them. We can basically create our own “Official” firmware, that’s right official. (At least that’s what Felix – who’s behind the project - told me)
2 Months ago, Felix Dev (Author of the project along with artart78) mentioned that the project wouldn’t be able to go any further due to the lack of time and support.
I quote:
Hey folks,
Sadly, I don’t think the project will go much further in the future, as nearly every work on it has been stopped. In the upcoming weeks, I’ll upload a working version of the mediaman module which is probably the only module you guys should expect to be uploaded to the Github repository in the foreseeable future.
End of contribution to the uOFW project won’t result in the repository being shut down and everyone is still welcome to add information to it.
Furthermore, if you want to chat with us, we can still be found in our #uofw IRC channel as of now.
uOFW was a great project, and believe me when I say it was a lot of fun, however, the lack of time and support killed it in the end.
We could probably revive it as part of a PS Vita project, but we are nowhere near that any time soon.
On behalf of the uOFW team, I would like to thank everyone who gave us his support throughout these past months and years!
However they have gotten a few developers willing to contribute to the project recently and they’re back in action! This is one of the most ambitious projects ever for the PSP. A full reverse engineering of the official PSP firmware! You can follow all their updates here: https://github.com/uofw
They are currently working on reverse engineering the two following modules:
■sceIdStorage: https://github.com/uofw/uofw/tree/idstorage
■module manager: https://github.com/uofw/uofw/tree/modulemgr_updated
Also be sure to check their module status list here: https://github.com/uofw/uofw/wiki/Cu...Modules-Status. For a more up-to-date info on modules being worked on, check here https://github.com/uofw/uofw/branches.
If any developers are interested and willing to contribute, you may contact the team via IRC on the FreeNode server (irc.freenode.net) (join the channel #uofw) Or via e-mail at the team’s common email address uofwteam@gmail.com

If you're reading this article at all, chances are you know how Flappy Bird works. Just tap one of the PSP's face buttons to navigate your chubby little winged creature through a series of Mario pipes. However, a lot has changed since Sandroron released his first build of Flappy Bird for PSP a little over a month ago. Beyond the spot on gameplay experience, version 2.0 also includes full simultaneous multiplayer, more bird colors, and the ability to customize the game's background as you see fit. There are also a few extra modes including pipeless and cat variations as well. Need I say more? Check out this well put together PSP homebrew below!
What's new?
- Multiplayer
- New colors of birds
- Pink background
- Color and background customization
- No tubes mode, Dachshund bird mode and Nyan Cat (beta) mode
- Semi-fix of memory bug
- etc.

A Crytek executive has expressed concern at the limited RAM available on both Xbox One and PS4.
US engine business development manager Sean Tracy told GamingBoltthat while both consoles are powerful, the relatively modest 8GB of RAM on each may cause problems in the future.
"I would have to agree with the viewpoint that 8GB can easily be filled up, but also keep in mind that developers don't necessarily even have access to all eight gigs of it," Tracy explained.
"For example, the Xbox One retains some of the RAM for OS purposes. Since technology, as [author and futurist] Ray Kurzweil states, progresses exponentially, we will soon find that the computational requirements of games will quickly hit the ceiling of a few gigs of ram."
However, Tracy said this doesn't necessarily point to a disaster scenario, as improvements in technology (such as new, more efficient gameplay engines and middleware) can help produce greater results with the same cap on available RAM.
"We already had to manage quite intensely our memory usage throughout Ryse and this will be one of the limiting factors surely in this generation," he stated. "As hardware gets stronger the complexity of scenes can be increased and the dynamism within them.
"However, with that said it's not the raw power alone that will allow for photorealistic graphics but technology that intelligently scales and utilizes all that the hardware has to offer."
Tracy also praised both consoles' main processors, saying: "Though the PS4 and Xbox One don't offer an enormous jump over the previous generation in terms of raw processing power, the custom AMD APUs within both platforms represent a huge leap forward in terms of integration and capability."

The PS4 is the best-selling console, but can Sony keep it that way?
Sony is in a good place these days by some measures. The company's Game division had revenues rise over 38 percent last year with the successful introduction of the PlayStation 4. That new console has sold over seven million units so far, making it the undisputed sales leader among the new consoles. The latest exclusive release for the PS4, InFamous: Second Son, has garnered strong sales and solid reviews.
Yet all is not rosy for Sony, despite these successes. The Game division's rise in revenue was marred by the fact that it lost $78 million overall due to the expenses associated with launching the PS4. Overall, the company is still struggling to turn a profit, and the PS Vita continues to underperform. Lately, Microsoft announced a $399 Kinect-less Xbox One, erasing the $100 price difference with the PS4 and leading some analysts to say the Xbox One will outsell the PS4 in some markets. "It's good to be the king," (as Mel Brooks said in his role as King Louis XVI in History of the World Part I) but in the games business it merely means everyone's looking to take the throne for themselves.
Sony's going to have to work hard to maintain its leadership at E3, especially with Microsoft already stealing attention with several announcements ahead of the big event. What does Sony have up its sleeve, and what are we likely to see at E3? The [a]list daily takes a look at what's in store for Sony.
The level playing field
Microsoft has announced a $399 Xbox One, which puts it even with the PS4 in price. Never before have two consoles been so similar in architecture, features and price. Yes, there are differences, but they are so minor that they are important mostly to the hardest of hardcore fans - who have probably already bought one of the two consoles. The sales battle now will come down to exclusive experiences (games, services, and original video content), compelling exclusive technologies that help create those experiences, and marketing.
Sony's challenge at E3 2014 is to show what it's got lined up in all of those areas, and how it will be better than Microsoft or any other competitor. Remember, too, that Sony sees the PlayStation product line as important to the entire company's strategy. Sony wants PlayStation (in all its forms and variations) to help drive hardware sales (such as phones and tablets) as well as drive sales of entertainment created by its music and movie divisions.
Exclusive entertainment
This is what many gamers want to hear from Sony - what exclusive games are coming, and when will they actually arrive? Some compelling titles have been shown, like The Order: 1886 and Deep Down, but we're still lacking solid ship dates for many of these titles. Some titles, like DriveClub, have already been moved out from the original ship dates, and we're likely to see more of these. Sony needs to tell gamers what exactly they can expect to be playing this summer and especially this Christmas, in order to maximize sales.
The danger is that while many titles sound great and look good in early teasers, the reality often falls short of expectations. Microsoft could end up with better exclusive games this holiday season just through a lucky break, if fewer Xbox One titles slip than PS4 titles. Yes, there will be some compelling titles like Destiny for both consoles... but when a title is available on both consoles it's not going to help sales of one console more than the other.
"PlayStation Now has been in beta testing... What exactly will be offered to consumers? How much will it cost? When can we get it? These are crucial questions, perhaps even more so than how well the technology actually works"
More than games, though, there's also the original video content that Sony has announced. We know Microsoft will have some interesting things to tell us about (like the Halo series), but so far Sony's been rather shy about details of its new shows planned for PlayStation. Is it possible they've got something that could help sell hardware? We'll know more after E3.
Exclusive technologies
It looks like Sony has an advantage here, with PlayStation Now (based on Gaikai's streaming technology) and Project Morpheus (the VR headset demonstrated at GDC). So far, though, we know very little about when Sony plans to introduce these technologies and the business models for them. PlayStation Now has been in beta testing, streaming games generated on PS3 or PS4 to a variety of devices. What exactly will be offered to consumers? How much will it cost? When can we get it? These are crucial questions, perhaps even more so than how well the technology actually works.
PlayStation Now holds great promise, not just for streaming games, but for Sony's other media interests as well. Music streaming and video streaming are the hot commodities these days, as witness the rumored $3.2 billion purchase of Beats by Apple (to get its streaming music service) and the rumored $1 billion purchase of Twitch by Google. Yet the wrong pricing or restrictions could keep this promising business from going anywhere. What will Sony announce at E3? It's possible that Sony could continue to kick this can down the road and avoid any major news, but that would be a missed opportunity. Imagine if you could play PS3 or PS2 games through your PS4 at some very reasonable price - that would instantly create some killer gaming content that could boost PS4 sales.
The PS Vita is another exclusive technology that could become a sales booster for Sony. The prospect of enhanced or remote PS4 gameplay through the PS Vita could take off with the new $199 PS Vita Slim and the right combination of marketing and great games. Certainly you should expect some focus on the PS Vita from Sony at E3. The amount of attention Sony gives to the PS Vita, its position in Sony's presentation and its presence in Sony's booth will go a long way towards telling you what Sony thinks the prospects are for the PS Vita in the year ahead.
Project Morpheus is doubtless further out, but Sony could create more interest by announcing price and availability and showing some games for the technology. It's likely this will be an expensive peripheral and thus may not gather an enormous audience, but the cool factor could be a useful marketing tool for Sony. This might even help sell PS4s, if people buy one with the idea that someday they'll get a VR headset to go with it. Again, the attention Sony gives this at E3 will tell us much about how important the device is to Sony.
The marketing strategy
Looming above all of this for Sony is the follow-up to its successful marketing strategy. Last year the theme was Greatness Awaits. Will Sony continue with this theme, expand it, or abandon it? How will Sony draw together the exclusive entertainment and technologies offered to create a strong alternative to Microsoft? Overconfidence is perhaps the greatest danger facing Sony. It's all too easy to start believing your own press releases when you are the number one selling console.
Sony's execs are a savvy group, though, and they are likely to keep the pressure up internally to do better and move forward. "Great job last year, let's do better this year" will probably be the message internally. Microsoft will be driving hard to take away Sony's top position, so Sony has to keep pressing forward strongly. And let's not forget Nintendo, which will be trying to drag some attention back to itself. The 3DS has been beating the PS Vita handily so far - can Sony change that situation this holiday?

It is complete. With today's launch of cross-save support for Borderlands 2 on Vita, the game is fully fleshed-out and filled with finger-flicking delight. That isn't a euphemism – since it's on Vita, there's plenty of touchscreen and rear touchpad action in this latest version of Borderlands 2. Some of it works, and some of it feels designed in the bowels of frustration hell.
Borderlands 2 wasn't conceived as a Vita game, and at times that fact is obvious – when it runs into framerate issues or the graphics pop in (usually leaving my character's irises and pupils for last on the home screen), it feels like a big game ported onto a tiny device. These issues are mostly ignorable, but they contribute to a few annoying gameplay problems.

Gorgeous platforming RPG Child of Light is coming to Vita on July 2 in Europe. While there's no word yet from North America, PSN tradition suggests it might hit on July 1. [Update: Sure enough, it's July 1 in North America and digital-only, and the asking price is $15]
In the UK the Vita port costs £12 on PSN, and it's also getting a boxed copy that includes all additional content including a bonus quest, a new character, and a collectibles pack. We've confirmed with Ubisoft UK there is no cross-buy or cross-save functionality between the existing PS3 and PS4 versions and the new Vita release.

It was a longer wait than expected, but Borderlands 2 players can now resume progress between Vita and PS3 vault-hunting. A new patch adds cross-save functionality to the Sony versions of the game - and to reiterate, just the Sony versions.
Gearbox's portable loot-and-shooter features six previously released DLC packs, including Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty, Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage, the Psycho and Mechromancer classes, and Ultimate Vault Hunter's Upgrade and Collector's Edition packs. Also, the Vita port has a two-player cap on online hijinks.

The Xbox One, PS4 and Vita versions of Minecraft are due to launch in August for $20, Mojang announced today. On Xbox One and PS4, the game is $5 for those who already own Minecraft on Xbox 360 or PS3. The Vita edition is a Cross-Buy title, meaning if you already own Minecraft on PS3, you get it on Vita for free. All PS3 DLC will work with the Vita version, though not all skins and texture packs will work on PS4 or Xbox One versions, due to licensing deals.
Minecraft: Xbox One and PS4 editions include bigger worlds than current-gen versions, and they bothallow users to import save data from Xbox 360 and PS3 + Vita games, respectively. However, saves don't transfer from next-gen to current-gen systems.
"There are technical reasons for this; we can make worlds bigger without too much stress, but shrinking them causes all kinds of problems," Mojang says.
The $5 upgrade program will be live for at least a year after the August launches.

Blizzard realizes if you give a mouse a Legendary cookie, he's gonna want more Legendary cookies. So, "due to the overwhelming popularity" of last week's birthday buff, Diablo 3 will retain the doubled drop rate for Legendary items even when the buff ends today. Huzzah!
That's for PC and Mac versions since that's where the buff was introduced, but we expect that'll probably change once the console clamor kicks in. Who knows how high the rate will be when Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls hits PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3 on August 19?

Sony's SingStar karaoke series will make its PlayStation 4 debut later this year, and this time around, players won't need to buy a proprietary microphone peripheral to belt out their favorites.
The PlayStation 4 version of SingStar allows players to sing using a free iOS and Android app that turns compatible smartphones and tablets into karaoke-ready microphones. SingStar's PlayStation 3 version will also be updated to support smartphones and tablets following the launch of the PS4 edition.
The next version of SingStar also boasts an improved scoring system and expanded social features, allowing players to challenge friends and share performances via Twitter and Facebook. A release date for SingStar's forthcoming upgrade has not been announced.

Take-Two has registered the name City Stories, which has seen the internet speculate about a possible new GTA.
Of course it makes sense. City Stories was the name of the PSP GTA sub-series – namely Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.
Does that mean it is a handheld game? One for Vita maybe? Or is this the name of the highly anticipated DLC pack for last year’s record-breaking video game?
Or could it be Take-Two is just protecting its brand?
The registration listing says the trademark covers ‘computer and video games software’ and ‘entertainment services’.
So it could be absolutely anything. Take-Two has suggested that a Rockstar announcement is due soon, with a game set to arrive on next-gen platforms before March 2015.

When Ultra Street Fighter 4 initially debuts on June 3, it will only feature trials for those characters found in Super Street Fighter 4, according to CVG.
As the name would suggest, these trials are quick tests requiring players to input commands for special attacks, combos and their chosen fighters' other various manuevers. In theory, each trial serves as a personalized introduction to combat. Though Super Street Fighter 4: Arcade Edition introduced four new fighters to the game, it did not include trials for these new pugilists. Capcom hoped to rectify this omission with Ultra Street Fighter 4 while also introducing new trials for the five additional fighters joining the cast in the upcoming update, though that's no longer the plan.
"There will be no new trials available at the time of the Ultra Street Fighter 4digital upgrade launch, but stay tuned, as we'll have more news to share on this topic shortly after the digital upgrade version is released," a Capcom representative told CVG.
Keep in mind that June 3 is only one of the official launch dates for Ultra Street Fighter 4, specifically the date on which the game's digital upgrade hits the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Additional versions of Ultra Street Fighter 4 will roll out between June 3 and August 8, and it's possible that later releases may include the absent trials. We've reached out to Capcom for more information, and will report back when and if we hear more.

PS4 owners, come and sit with us. Everyone here? Good. Now, look to the person on your left. According to statements from Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai in a corporate strategy meeting, one of you has a PlayStation Plus subscription. We'll let you process that for awhile.
The high percentage of PS4 units tied to PS Plus subscriptions jibes well with Hirai's forecast that the PS4 will go on to become more profitable than the PS2, as Hirai cited digital services like Plus as a major factor for his prediction. Hirai noted that Sony raked in more than 200 billion yen (~$1.9 billion) through network services in fiscal 2013, and he expects that number to increase going forward.
This meeting of the Sony Statistics Club is adjourned. Please enjoy some tasty crackers and cheese at our Mix-N-Mingle table.

While Sony as a whole is predicting losses to the tune of almost half a billion this fiscal year, company CEO Kazuo Hirai is looking to the future - specifically, the PlayStation 4's future. During a corporate strategy meeting reported by Japanese website Impress Watch and translated by Eurogamer, Hirai said he believes that "it is likely that PS4 will become the platform which exceeds the profits earned with PS2."
The PlayStation 2 sold more than 155 million units in its 13-year lifespan, having finally been discontinued at the beginning of last year. The PS4, in its six months on the market, has sold more than 7 million units. While that trend would need to remain relatively stable to beat the PS2 in sheer numbers within the same span of time, bear in mind that a straight-up comparison of unit sales isn't looking at the whole picture.
Hirai cited the growing popularity of digital distribution and services - things which didn't factor into the PS2's success - as the keys that will allow Sony increased profitability, even if they don't move as many units.

Tired of making sandwich after sandwich, idly waiting while the ol' PlayStation 4 downloads Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes? Though we'd never encourage you to stop making delicious sandwiches, we do sympathize with the situation. Thankfully for you, Sony's adding pre-loading of all pre-ordered upcoming games to the PlayStation 4 starting this fall with Bungie's next big game: Destiny. That means you can download the whole shebang ahead of the game's "official" launch on September 9th, and when midnight strikes, you're ready to go. Bizarrely, the news comes via PlayStation Network message from Ubisoft; as seen above, Watch Dogs(which launches this Tuesday) won't have pre-loading. Sorry Charlie! Come September, however, you're good to go.

Grip Games' acrobatic racer, Jet Car Stunts, is clearing the gap to PS3 and Vita in July for $7.99, with a "significantly upgraded" version due for PS4 in August.According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, anyone that straps into the PS3 and Vita versions will be offered a discount toward the PS4 counterpart, which will be "significantly upgraded" with boosted visuals and a 60 fps, 1080p view of floating track and geometry clusters. Both the base price and discount size for the PS4 version are still to be revealed, though.
Regardless of the PlayStation device you use to flip through Jet Car Stunts, cross-play will be available, with leaderboards and the ghosts of top players also shared across the three platforms. Grip Games also has Xbox 360 and Xbox One versions planned, but Steam users don't have to have any of this waiting nonsense - Jet Car Stunts is revved and ready to go on PC for $9.99.

The FIFA World Cup standalone game may not be coming to PS4, Xbox One or PC but some free Brazil-themed content is on the way to those platforms.
The FIFA 14 Ultimate Team: World Cup add-on is for the Ultimate Team mode and takes the card-collecting mechanic and applies it to international versions of players from the World Cup squads.
Everything is, as you might expect, officially licensed including the Adidas Brazuca match ball, all the national kits and the Estadio do Marcana stadium.
Plus every World Cup pack purchased comes with a free Gold Pack for use in the normal Ultimate Team mode.
The content will be released on May 29th for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360 and PC.
EA said in February that it chose to release 2014 Brazil World Cup on last-gen consoles only because it is “making the best game we can for our largest audience, which is still on 360 and PS3”.

The next entry in EA's Battlefield franchise abandons the series' traditional military setting in favor of the urban battlegrounds patrolled by civilian police officers, according to a handful of assets leaked by the publisher alongside its latest Battlelog update.
Unlike past entries in the series, Battlefield Hardline will not be developed by DICE, but is instead being crafted by Dead Space developer Visceral Games. Despite this, and the change of setting, the game includes at least four distinct character classes, a multiplayer map dubbed "Downtown" and game modes with such names as "Blood Money" and "Bomb Squad." The fan-favorite "Carrier Assault" mode was also listed among the Battlefield Hardline assets.
The Battlefield Daily Twitter feed also found images representing the awards to be found in Battlefield Hardline. Each icon looks similar to those found inBattlefield 4, though in lieu of that game's military theme, these awards feature handcuffs, bags of cash (complete with cartoonish money symbols) and a grappling hook - implements you'd expect to see in a bank heist, but not in a Chinese warzone.
There's currently no word on when Battlefield Hardline might debut, though it seems very likely that EA will share more on the game at the upcoming E3 conference. We've attempted to contact the publisher in the meantime, in the hopes that it might want to shed light on things a bit early, but have so far received no response.

20 hours of unpaid access to Battlefield 4 is today's unusual serving of PlayStation Plus for PS3 owners in North America. The new initiative grants full access to the DICE shooter on Sony's last-gen console, including single-player and multiplayer. The 20 hours are denoted as "playable" from the first moment you launch it, though it's unclear if that's accumulative or not. Of course it doesn't matter if you play it for 20 hours straight, in which case good for you - you're living the dream!
Plus members can also grab five-star platformer Limbo, with last year's Vita version hitting the service today as well.

The Order 1886 runs at 30 frames per second to preserve its cinematic look, game director Dana Jan has said.
Jan told Kotaku that he enjoys playing games which run at 60fps, but that affects the aesthetic of the game. Most films run at 24 fps, so The Order's framerate bridges that gap in the interest of matching the aesthetic while feeling good to play.
"If you push that to 60, and you have it look the way we do, it actually would end up looking like something on the Discovery Channel, like an HDTV kind of segment or a sci-fi original movie maybe," Jan said. "The escapism you get from a cinematic film image is just totally different than what you get from television framing, so that was something we took into consideration."
Jan added that The Order's visual effects, particularly its lighting engine, would be difficult to achieve at a consistently higher frame rate.
"We don't have a game where you're just outside in sunlight, so there's one light," Jan said. "We have candles flickering, fires, then characters have lights on them. So [to make] all those lights [work] with this fidelity means, I think, until the end of this system most people won't have any clue how to make that run 60 and look like this."

EA has posted a new Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare image that hints at a PlayStation version for PopCap's third-person shooter.
The image (pictured) – posted to EA's Twitter accountearlier this week – seems an obvious tribute to Sony's Sly Cooper.
EA has yet to officially announce anything regarding Sony's PS3 and PS4 hardware, though an announcement at E3 seems reasonable enough – with next month's conference rapidly approaching.
Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warefare launched earlier this year on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

The first three Ratchet & Clank games are warping onto Vita, with the duo's portable re-release officially confirmed. Sony announced the HD Trilogy hits Europe on July 2, priced 30 euros, and Australia on July 9 - we're waiting to hear on North America. Sony Europe added it'll be available both on retail shelves and the PlayStation Store.
Insomniac's HD bundle stars the lombax and robot's first three games on PS2:Ratchet & Clank, Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal. It first came to PS3 in 2012 as the Ratchet & Clank Collection (in Europe it's HD Trilogy rather than Collection for reasons unfathomable).
The PS3 re-release was ported by Idol Minds, the dev behind the canceledWarrior's Lair. This time duties are handed over to Mass Media, the team that brought the Jak and Daxter Collection to PS3 and Vita.

Sony’s successful Instant Game Collection is being stepped up from June.
Starting on June 4th Sony will be offering PlayStation Plus subscribers free access to two games per platform per month across PS4, PS3 and Vita.
The deal kicks off with access to Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate and Trine 2 on PS4, NBA 2K14 and Lone Survivor on PS3 and Dragon’s Crown and Surge Deluxe on Vita.
Note that Pixeljunk Shooter and Lone Survivor are also Cross Buy, meaning they’re also available on Vita.
“Next month, PlayStation Plus will reach its fourth anniversary. It’s evolved a great deal since its inception,” PS Store and Plus content manager Chris Howe said.
“Since we are always looking to continue the evolution of PS Plus as a service that really serves our community, we are excited to provide a more balanced set of games each month within the Instant Game Collection.”
The amount of time each title is available to download for free has been extended, too.
“Since we’ve seen how excited many of you are to download Instant Game Collection titles as soon as they’re available, we’ve decided to adjust the length of time each title will be available,” Howe added.
“Starting in July, every title in the Instant Game Collection will be available the first Wednesday of the month, and will be free for that month, until the first Wednesday of the following month.”

A new Sony studio called Pixel Opus will reveal its first project at E3 next month, according to The New York Times.
The studio's employees are largely composed of Carnegie Mellon graduates who worked with Sony Computer Entertainment America executive producer Alex Lee as part of their coursework.
Students at the class produced prototype games for PlayStation Vita, some of whom went on to work as interns at Sony and get hired. Lee said that formal game design programs at established universities like Carnegie Mellon are increasingly relevant.
"Historically, I've always been aware of these programs," Lee said. "It's only in recent years that they've become meaningful."
We've asked Sony for more information about the new studio and will update this article with any response.
Sony announced the time and date for its annual E3 press conferenceearlier this month.
It will be streamed live to theatres across North America, where in-person attendees will receive some "surprise gifts".
Highlights of Sony's E3 2013 press conference included the PS4hardware reveal, the announcement of the console's launch price, and the gameplay premiere of Bungie's Destiny.
Sony's event will follow Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft press conferences earlier that day.

Sony will launch the latest Vita mega pack bundle in late June.
Priced at €199.99, it will include the handheld, an 8GB memory card, plus five games:
The hardware bundle will be available in, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland, UK, Bulgaria, Croatia, Iceland, France, Greece, Poland, Russia, Denmark, Germany, Portugal, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Spain.
Alternatively, users will be able to pick up an 8GB memory card and a PlayStation Store voucher code to download the five action games for €39.99. This offer will be available in Australia, New Zealand, UK, South Africa, Germany, Cyprus, Portugal, Finland, Norway, Sweden and Spain.
Don Mesa, director of product planning and platform software innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment America, recently acknowledged that the company has struggled to get triple-A games on Vita.
"The economics simply don't work with the traditional process," he said.

Sony has scheduled PlayStation Network maintenance for Monday June 2.
The maintenance period will run for approximately six hours, from 17:50 until 23:30 BST (9:50 to 15:30 Pacific Time / 12:50 to 18:30 Eastern Time).
Services including PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and Account Management will be inaccessible during the maintenance window, but online gameplay will be available to users who have recently signed in to their PSN account and have their authentication details cached.
Sony says there may be some additional downtime after the maintenance period for testing purposes.
The company said on Thursday that PlayStation Plus will offer six titles a month starting in June.
June's new titles for US subscribers will be Trine 2 and Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate for PS4, NBA 2K14 and Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (with Vita Cross-Buy) for PS3, and Terraria and Mutant Mudds Deluxe for Vita.
European subscribers will receive Trine 2 and Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate for PS4, NBA 2K14 and Lone Survivor for PS3, and Dragon's Crown and Surge Deluxe for PS Vita.
Sony CEO Kaz Hirai revealed in a corporate strategy meeting this month that half of all PS4 owners subscribe to PlayStation Plus.

Gaijin Entertainment announced that cross-platform play is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PC versions of its competitive free-to-play military MMO War Thunder in Europe "very, very soon."
The cross-platform play update will follow next week's release of War Thunder's Ground Forces Expansion, which adds a collection of playable tanks and other land-based units. War Thunder is the latest PlayStation 4 game to offer cross-platform gameplay compatibility, following up on last month's launch of the PS4 version of Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn.
War Thunder will debut for the PlayStation 4 in North America on June 3.

It's redundant to mention that the latest batch of screenshots from Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix are highlighted by their various Disney guest stars, but without the characters spawned by the House of Mouse this would be just another moon-eyed Japanese roleplaying epic, so we'll take it.
In this particular batch, we see Cinderella, Ariel, the neon-lit characters fromTron, and, of course, Mickey, Goofy and Donald, among others. ThoughKingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix is an enhanced reissue of Kingdom Hearts 2 andKingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, the inherently cartoonish Disney style loses nothing in the jump to the higher-definition aesthetics of the PlayStation 3. The inevitable Kingdom Hearts 3 will likely make Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix pale in comparison, but these images suggest that fans won't be bothered by jagged polygons or blurry textures during this adventure.
No solid release date has yet been established for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, but Square Enix hopes to release the PlayStation 3 exclusive compilation at some point during 2014.

Turns out those 326 retailer listings were true: The Walking Dead and The Wolf Among Us Season 1 are confirmed for PS4 and Xbox One. Telltale's two adventure series hit the consoles this year, and The Walking Dead Season 1and Season 2 are packaged as separate games. The Season One box is the GOTY edition, so it includes the 400 Days DLC episode.
Telltale's also bringing new discs to the Xbox 360 and PS3, with the two last-gen consoles getting The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead Season 2 too. Though it's not noted, we'll probably see both series on the PS4 and Xbox One's digital storefronts as well.
