“Piracy's been the biggest problem, no question about it – it has become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now.” That’s the frank admission of SCEA’s senior VP of publisher relations Rob Dyer about the current state of the PSP market.
But the exec also claims that, come E3, Sony will have announced a way in which it finally hopes to tackle the issue.
“A lot of the stuff that will be announced at E3 we're very excited about,” he told Gamasutra. “We also believe that there's a way that you will be able to, not stop, but slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days from a tech perspective.
“There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent.
“We're going to fix retail. First party has done a great job of getting some campaigns in place to do that. We have some very big third-party titles, notably from Japan. We will have a good line-up this year. And hopefully, by virtue of that, we'll carry through to next year as well.”
Dyer also went on to point out that while the PSP may be struggling in Europe and America, it continues to boss the market in Sony’s homeland.
“It's killing it in Japan,” he added. “In North America you have Peace Walker that I think is going to do very good numbers. You're going to have some phenomenal support from Square. They have some great stuff coming. You have some great stuff from Capcom. Again, it's a lot of stuff from Japan.
“We have EA Sports stuff that's going to be coming out. You're going to have Toy Story 3 on the PSP that's coming out. There are a number of titles from American publishers that will be there, but are we getting full-line support? No. I'm not going to bullshit you on that.”

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2010/05/22/...r-revision-81/
What’s up everyone? The long weekend is here and it’s about to get a whole lot better — it’s Half Byte Loader (HBL) revision 81 83 for all PSP (PSPgo too!) models running firmware 5.00 to 6.20. Much has improved since we last covered m0skit0, Wololo, n00b81 and ab5000’s HBL. I’m talking mad compatibility with plenty of homebrew and emulators. Just take a look at this thread. Yeah, that’s what’s up.

PS3 owners clinging onto consoles running firmware earlier than 3.21 will do well to note that Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption not only requires that particular system software to run, but handily includes it on the disk for easy installation, too.
Chances are there have been other games out since April 1st that required the OtherOS removing firmware update, but Redemption is likely to be one of the higher profile titles to do, and as far as we know this isn’t stated on the box at all so consider this a notice if you’re still to pick up the game.
This means that if you want to play Red Dead Redemption and hold on to your OtherOS installation you’ll need to grab yourself another PlayStation 3.
The PlayStation Blog did warn PS3 users that this might happen in their post at the end of March – “Use of new features and improvements that are available on PS3 system software 3.21 or later” and it really was only a matter of time before the update became compulsory.

Apparently Valve boss Gabe Newell thinks the PS3 needs to be more of an open platform, drawing a comparison to Apple's Mac platform. In an interview with 5BY5.TV, he said he would like to see the PS3 be 'open like a Mac' instead of being 'more closed like a Gamecube.' 'Platform investments, like the Mac, are difficult because you have to be aware of what direction that platform is moving,' Newell said, referring to the firm's recent move onto Macs with its titles and distribution service Steam. 'We need to target platforms that do a better job of looking like where we want to be in a few years.'

Speaking of the PSP, there's been a tremendous fall off in North America in terms of support for the system. It's still doing extremely well in Japan.
RD: It's killing it in Japan. [In North America] you have Peace Walker that I think is going to do very good numbers. You're going to have some phenomenal support from Square. They have some great stuff coming. You have some great stuff from Capcom. Again, it's a lot of stuff from Japan...

A lot of the stuff that will be announced at E3 we're very excited about, because they are huge titles. And we also believe that there's a way that you will be able to, not stop, but slow down the piracy in the first 30 to 60 days from a tech perspective. There's some code that you can embed that we've been helping developers implement in order to get people at least to see a 60-day shelf life before it gets hacked and it shows up on BitTorrent.
That's been the biggest problem, no question about it. It's become a very difficult proposition to be profitable, given the piracy right now. And the fact that the category shrunk inside of retail.
We're going to fix retail. First party has done a great job of getting some campaigns in place to do that. We have some very big third-party titles, notably from Japan. We will have a good line-up this year. And hopefully, by virtue of that, we'll carry through to next year as well.

Paramount has announced a new Top Gun game in development at doublesix, ready to assault PSN, Mac and Windows PC this summer. Described as "a free-flying air combat shooter," the press release promises "large-scale dogfight battles" as players jump into pilot Maverick's F-14, following his journey from Top Gun Academy to the Indian Ocean. Top Gun won't be a strictly solo affair, either -- five multiplayer modes, supporting up to 16 players online, will also be included.
Screenwriter Jack Epps, Jr. will return to the Top Gun world, expanding on the film's events through the game. "With Jack Epps, Jr. on board, we're excited to deliver a new Top Gun arcade experience that holds true to the popular film," said John Kavanagh, VP of games at Paramount. Sounds fine by us, but we swear, Mr. Epps, if you don't fit the volleyball scene into the game somewhere, we're probably going to write you a tersely-worded letter explaining our disappointment.

Prepare for a trip to the Gurhal system. Sega is bringing Phantasy Star Portable 2 stateside.
Phantasy Star Portable 2 takes place three years after the Phantasy Star Universe saga. The Seed is no longer a threat, but resources are dwindling, in other words online adventurers are needed. Phantasy Star Portable 2 supports ad-hoc play popularized by Monster Hunter Freedom. Rangers and hunters an ocean apart can link up through infrastructure mode.
The publisher confirmed the PSP game for a fall release, but hasn’t said anything about the Pizza Hut, Famitsu, and Resonace of Fate items.

Japan hasn't had a lot of time to get used to the PlayStation 3's Torne digital TV tuner since it launched in March, but it's already getting an update which will add a few more DVR features to improve the experience. Coming in June, v2.00 will enable MPEG-4 AVC compression to squeeze HDTV recordings by as much as 3x their original size as opposed to just copying the original MPEG-2 stream even while playing a game, plus the ability to start watching a program and fast forward/reverse while it's still recording and update the user's PSN status. The free update will be issued in June, until then Torne fans can argue with European and Australian PlayTV owners about whether or not their new features are better than Facebook integration while the U.S. sits out like the ginger kid of a previous marriage it is.

Sony is about to ramp up PSP promotion with a new series of TV commercials and Kevin Butler-like spokesperson. We said Kevin Butler “like” because Sony isn’t using the fictional PlayStation 3 figurehead for PSP ads. Deutsch LA, the company behind the Kevin Butler campaign, invented a new character, 12-year-old PSP Fanboy Marcus Rivers.
In what appears to be the first ad in the series, Marcus meets Kevin Butler who is the “VP of everything PlayStation.” He asks Butler, in the commercial, why they aren’t talking about the PSP. Before Butler can answer, Marcus rants about how he can’t rule the school bus and “noob kids” are talking about playing games on phones. He then tells Butler “PSP needs a hero, a hustler” and gets the job.
Another ad where Marcus is “Deputy of Sibling Relations”, the PSP Fanboy promotes ModNation Racers and dumps on mobile phone games… again. The set up is an older brother steals a younger brother’s PSP to play ModNation Racers.
There’s even a Marcus ad for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker where Marcus says, “This ain’t like the cartoon games your 6 year old cousin plays. It’s a full sized Metal Gear exclusive on your PSP.” A far cry from the kid in a cardboard box commercials in Japan. The $9.99 PSP game line up report we posted last week is also a Marcus ad where the squirt is “Deputy of Unbelievable Game Deals.”
All of the ads end with “step your (insert phrase) up, step your (another phrase) up, step your game up.” In the case of Peace Walker, it’s “step your stealth up, step your story up, step your game up.”
This slate of ads shows us Sony hasn’t given up on pushing PSP, but they are actively rebranding and targeting the platform at teens.

The latest free-roaming epic to emerge from the house of Grand Theft Auto has received a rapturous reception from the gaming press and looks to be on target to become one of the highest reviewed titles of all time.
Red Dead Redemption is currently averaging 95 per cent on Metacritic. It has also received top marks from an impressive 13 media outlets including VideoGamer, The Telegraph, 1UP, GameSpy and GamePro.
The score places it amongst the higher echelons of the all-time greats alongside the likes of Halo 2, The Legend of Zelda: The Twilight Princess and Majora’s Mask, Winning Eleven 6, Gran Turismo 3 and the Grand Theft Auto pair San Andreas and Vice City.
The game is odds-on to be crowned UK number one on Monday – despite experiencing a few problems on the High Street.

Although we're seeing an increasing focus on DLC and digital distribution, SCEA's vice president Rob Dyer wants the industry to maintain focus on retail releases.
Dyer believes that disc releases are the only way of ensuring that new content can be used by 100 percent of the targeted audience.
"You can talk about why DLC is important to help limit the used game business and to keep people holding onto [the game]," Dyer told Gamasutra.
"I'm all about that, too. I love that. But I want it on the disc so that 100 percent out there that can play this thing."
"What are we, north of 70 percent on the network now? 73, I think. Microsoft probably the same," he continued.
"[That's] still a significant number of people that aren't able to get, whether they don't have broadband, whether they just flat out can't get on the network. Whether or not you do it, they're not using it. I want it on the disc, that way when they buy it, they get it. So, if I can do that, that's great."
In contrast, full games like the FPS Blacklight: Tango Down and Lara Croft: Guardian of Light will be entirely digital releases.

Anyone who has tried their hand at RPG Maker 1 (or any text input with a controller) knows how difficult it can be typing long paragraphs into the console. [Thutmose] is here to save the day with Kupid 1.0 (2.0 in production). A PICAXE takes ps/2 keyboard input and converts it to a series of d-pad button presses for PS1 and PS2 controllers, providing quick data entry compared to the previously monotonous task.
We’re happy to learn that the source code and hardware is released, meaning it has the potential to be easily adapted to any controller/console.
