As the PlayStation Vita is more or less an open book when it come to modding commercial games, numerous individuals have taken a jab at creating their own mods and now, Reddit user ‘Dasutein‘ has released a PC voices mod for Trails Of Cold Steel I and II.
The Trails of Cold Steel titles received pretty good reviews when they were released and the series has quite a good fan base! (Image Source)
These pretty popular games, which form part of the JRPG genre, were originally released in 2013 and 2014 respectively in Japan and 2 years later in Europe for the PS3/Vita with later releases for Windows PCs and the PlayStation 4. This means that the PlayStation Vita is the only way to play these titles natively in a portable manner unless you have some form of Windows hybrid device with physical controls and now, Dasutein mod has made the Vita port even better.
From comments left by Dasutein on Reddit, this mod brings about 5000 extra English voice clips to both titles from the PC version. This results in the main character, Rean, speaking in many more scenes as the PC version has more voiced scenes than the PSVita and PS3 ports when it comes to the English version. Some of the scenes that received voices in the PC version can be found in .

This week saw the 20th anniversary of the launch of the PlayStation 2 in Japan -- the beginning of a remarkable era for console gaming.
The PS2 ultimately sold 155 million units worldwide, a record-breaking total that seems unlikely to be rivalled by any other console platform in the near future. Less commonly cited but even more extraordinary in many ways are the software numbers for the platform. Around 1.5 billion units of PS2 software were sold over the years, and though various estimates float around for the number of software titles released on PS2 -- complicated, I suspect, by different ways of counting SKUs and games with different names in various territories -- Wikipedia currently curates a list of almost 4,500 entries.
The 20th anniversary of the PS2 mostly serves to make those of us who were working in the games business at the time feel very old, of course, but it also serves as an opportunity to reflect on how things have changed since the March of 2000. It was an era when consoles ruled the roost; smartphones weren't even a twinkle in Steve Jobs' eye at that point, and the PC platform was going through one of the doom-and-gloom points in its cycle, as retailers reduced shelf space for PC games and digital distribution -- awaiting the arrival of Steam some years later -- remained an unfulfilled dream.
The PS2 launch and how the console and its market developed remain important things to study from a business perspective Things were simpler in many regards. Video games were all but synonymous with consoles at that point, and there was one business model to rule them all -- packaged games at a largely consistent price point. It's easy to be nostalgic for that simplicity, though it certainly had its downsides; not least the high barriers to entry that effectively prevented anything like today's thriving indie development sector from taking root.
It was also an era when territorial barriers were much higher in the industry. Japan, North America and Europe all had distinct line-ups of software, and even the launch date for the PS2 hardware itself was staggered across territories to an extent that would attract consumer outrage today -- the anniversary of the European launch, as a consequence, isn't for another nine months.
Rather than simply feeling nostalgic (or old), though, I think that the PS2 launch and how the console and its market developed remain important things to study from a business perspective. The world may have been different then, but the core of what it takes to launch a console and convince consumers to invest in it hasn't changed all that much -- and the PS2 remains the single most successful example of that in the industry's history. Moreover, for all that the market may be more complex and diversified today than it was 20 years ago, there are also some notable parallels between the PS2 and its rivals and the situation faced by the upcoming console launches.

After cracking the PlayStation Vita wide open, and providing a litany of useful homebrew tools, it appears that TheFlow is looking to move onwards and upwards to the next Sony system: the PlayStation 4. As those in the PS4 scene are likely aware, there is a current webkit exploit for consoles on firmware 6.20, thanks to SpecterDev. According to a post made by TheFlow on Twitter, it appears that he has an exploit in the works for OFW 6.20 as well. Those interested in homebrew are being told to stay on that system version, with a vague comment of, "Also don't update past FW 6.20 if you want a kxploit". What makes this tease even more notable though, is the fact that it isn't just a webkit exploit--the term "kxploit" was specifically mentioned. While a webkit exploit is useful, a kernel exploit would allow modders to do more with a theoretical softmod, and would be the first possible kexploit available since OFW 5.05/5.07. There is very limited information as of just yet, but with a track record like TheFlow's, it'd be wise to stay on 6.20 if you're on it. As of December 2019, the latest PlayStation 4 system software version is 7.02.
Also don‘t update past FW 6.20 if you want a kxploit
— Andy Nguyen (@theflow0) March 11, 2020 UPDATE: Well, it appears he didn't actually have a vulnerability in mind when he made his first Tweet above, but after receiving a PlayStation 4 from a fellow hacker, TheFlow has confirmed he indeed does have a vulnerability for OFW 6.20.

PlayStation 5 system architect Mark Cerny today delivered talking in detail about Sony's philosophy in putting together the hardware and some of the specs it believes will be key for developers and players alike.
Cerny began his talk by laying out the three guiding principles Sony followed in designing the PS5: listening to developers, balancing evolution and revolution, and finding new dreams.
On the first principle, Cerny said he makes a point every couple of years of touring roughly two dozen developers and publishers around the world to find out what they want out of new hardware. The most requested feature he heard from them was one of the first Sony revealed when it announced the PS5, a solid-state drive (SSD) for storage.
Cerny talked about the PS4 hard drive, saying "boot times and load times can get pretty grim" on the system, with developers able to load about 1GB of data in 20 seconds. By comparison, the PS5 can load 2GB in .27 seconds.

Nintendo has requested that Sony remove user creations from Dreams that are based on its IP, including its most famous character Mario.
The news emerged from a Dreams player, who goes by the handle 'Piece of Craft' on Twitter, who shared a screenshot showing their model of Mario has been removed from the game.
The image shows a notice that the creation was moderated and removed from the game because it contains copyrighted material.
It's not yet clear whether this is an ongoing, Dreams-wide purge or if this specific user was targeted. GamesIndustry.biz has found there are still Mario-themed Dreams creations available in-game at the time of writing.

GameStop today reassured investors that the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic does not yet seem to be threatening the year-end launches of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
In a post-earnings conference call with investors, GameStop CEO George Sherman said there was no indication yet that the pandemic would have an impact on the planned fourth-quarter launches of the two consoles, either in when they go on sale or when GameStop takes delivery on them from the console makers.

The global pandemic is creating uncertainty for a host of businesses, but Sony today said that it hasn't changed too much for PlayStation just yet.
As reported by Bloomberg, a Sony spokesperson said the company doesn't expect the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) to have any notable impact on the PlayStation 5 launch later this year.
Beyond that, Sony also released a statement today saying it believes COVID-19 will have no material impact on its gaming business for current fiscal year, which ends this coming Tuesday, March 31.
While it hasn't seen any issues with software delays to date, the company said it is keeping an eye on production schedules for first-party and partner studios, "primarily in the Europe and the US."
However, a number of Sony's other businesses have already felt the pinch, with cancelled concerts and theater shutdowns affecting its music and movie businesses, respectively.
Sony's electronics products segment has also been hurt by retail closures, supply chain instability, and factory shutdowns.

In an unusual move, Square Enix has decided to ship Final Fantasy VII Remake earlier than planned in select regions.
A statement released via Twitter attributes the decision to the disruption caused by COVID-19, which producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Tetsuya Nomura say has "made it very difficult to align timing of our global shipping."
The game is due to launch on April 10, and the company had previously warned that delivery may be delayed due to logistical problems caused by the virus.
But in an effort to avoid that, Square Enix has decided to "ship the game far earlier than usual to Europe and Australia."

According its developer, the scene veteran and PS3Xploit team member bguerville, PlayStation 3 Toolset (or PS3 Toolset) is “a new PS3 exploitation work” which evolved from development surrounding a new version of PS3Xploit’s tools.
PlayStation 3 Toolset is a framework by bgeurville for building powerful PS3 tools!
These tools, which are currently at version 2.0.2 with some HAN v3 tools also available, include:
- The NAND and NOR Flashers used to hack CFW-compatible consoles (minimum firmware of 3.56 or less)
- Others including an IDPS dumper and a NAND/NOR dumper
Shifting focus back to PS3 Toolset, bguerville is leveraging a brand new exploit to make stuff work in the toolset which contains various useful tools to both non-developers and developers which are described in the section below. However, before discussing the tools present in PS3 Toolset – we’ll look a bit at its backstory which can be summed up as follows: When PS3Xploit team member habib continued researching into PS3HEN (a hacking solution for noCFW PS3s) with help from esc0rtd3w, bguerville decided to instead focus on his own research and tool/exploit creation which led to him eventually branching off his PS3Xploit tools’ into PS3 Toolset which provides a framework for creating flexible and powerful tools.

Don't you just love seeing firmware update notifications for your legacy hardware? Sony sure hopes so, because they've pushed out a new firmware release for the PlayStation 3. What exactly does this new update bring to the table? Well, not much at all, outwardly. Sony offers the usual message of "This system software update improves the quality of the system performance". It's not stability, but it's close enough. Even in terms of exploits and homebrew, version 4.86 doesn't have much of an impact: according to PS3 scene developers, the kernel is unchanged. As always, it's wise to stay on your previous firmware until more information is available.
An update to the PlayStation 3 system software was released on 31/03/20. In order to download PS3 system software version 4.86, you will need a minimum 200MB of free space on either the PS3 Hard Disk Drive (System Update) or on removable storage media (PC Update).
