The PlayStation Network has added 3 million new customers since hackers brought it down earlier this year, CNET reports.
Speaking at the IFA conference in Berlin, Sony CEO Howard Stringer proclaimed the PSN "more secure and better than ever."
"We are aggressively expanding its content," he said. "We have more than 3 million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyber-attacks."
"This year, we at Sony have been flooded, we've been flattened, we've been hacked, we've been singed. But the summer of our discontent is behind us."
Stringer also revealed launch information for Sony's Tablet S device, which will be priced at $499 and $599 at launch - the same as Apple's market-leading iPad.
The PlayStation Network was taken offline in April this year. Service did not resume for several weeks, costing Sony an estimated $170 million.

Sony has released pricing and launch information for its tablet device.
The Sony Tablet S will be released in the US in September, with prices starting at $499 - the same price-point as the iPad.
The Android 3.0-powered device was first revealed in February. It has a 9.4 inch touchscreen and an NVIDIA Tegra 2 graphics chip, and supports both Wi-Fi and 3G connections.
The form factor is a significant departure from the iPad: the device is wedge-shaped, tapering from left to right, to provide a more comfortable grip in portrait, and a natural tilt in landscape.
The unique design should also let Sony side-step the legal complications faced by Samsung's Galaxy tablet, which is currently locked in patent disputes in several countries over similarities to the iPad.
The Tablet S will be able to download and play games from the PlayStation library. It will also feature custom designed features for better gameplay, like the ability to choose the size and placement of on-screen controls.
"We want to prove it's not who makes it first that counts, but who makes it better," said Sony president Howard Stringer at the IFA conference in Berlin.
No pricing information was released for the smaller Sony Tablet P - which has two 5.5 inch touchscreens joined by a central hinge - but a November release date was confirmed.
Two models of the Tablet S will be available at launch: the $499 model will come with 16GB of memory, and a 32GB model will be priced at $599.

The Eurogamer Expo will be the first opportunity for UK gamers to play the PlayStation Vita.
Sony's next generation portable isn't due to launch in the UK until next year. The Eurogamer Expo offers a unique opportunity to get hands-on with one of 2012's major hardware launches.
"We're really excited to have PlayStation Vita playable at this year's event," said Eurogamer's managing director Rupert Loman.
"Along with a fantastic line-up of PS3 titles and an exclusive developer session by Nolan North, having the PlayStation Vita exclusively available to play really takes their presence at the show to the next level".
The Vita joins a host of games on the show floor from EA, Nintendo, THQ, Ubisoft, Bethesda and Sega, among many others.
The show will also host developer sessions from leading industry professionals, the Indie Games Arcade and the GamesIndustry.biz Career Fair, in associations with BAFTA, UKIE and TIGA.
More than 30,000 people are expected to attend this year's Eurogamer Expo, which takes place in Earl's Court One, London, from September 22 to 25.

Console-maker Sony has rebranded its PlayStation download services, including PSN, as the 'Sony Entertainment Network.'
Audio download service Qriocity will also move under the new umbrella, but will be retiled to Music Unlimited. The PlayStation 3's Video On Demand channel, meanwhile, is to be renamed Video Unlimited.
PSN for both PlayStation 3 and PSP (and presumably Vita come the new handheld's launch) will retain its name but be 'realigned' as part of the new platform, which is intended to "accelerate the integration of hardware, content, and network," according to Sony's consumer products boss Kazuo Hirai.
"We're leveraging the biggest asset, the Sony brand, to establish a comprehensive, global platform called Sony Entertainment Network," stated Hirai at the IFA trade show last night (as reported byCNET).
Sony plans to open up the service to third-parties, as well as taking it to other of its consumer electronic devices. Music Unlimited is already available for most Android phones. "The whole of Sony is greater than the sum of its parts," claimed Hirai.
More details on the Sony Entertainment Network are available on its new website.

Howard Stringer, president of Sony Corporation, has said that PSN is "better than ever" following its six-week outage earlier this year.
Stringer cut a bullish figure at a Berlin news conference yesterday, in which he said PSN users and purchases were up, Sony was over its bumpy start to 2011, and even argued that it was better positioned than Apple.
"I'm pleased to tell you that PSN is more secure and better than ever," he told reporters. "We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyberattacks."
Sony endured a dismal start to 2011 when the PlayStation 3 washacked and opened up to piracy. The platform holder's aggressive response - taking legal action against George "Geohot" Hotz, the hacker who published PS3's root key online - incurred the wrath of the hacking community.
While the culprits are still yet to be identified, it is widely accepted that the group of hackers whose attack on PlayStation Network resulted in a six-week outage, the loss of 100 million users' personal details, and Kaz Hirai's humble apology at a Tokyo press conference. That, Stringer believes, is ancient history.
"This year, we at Sony have been flooded, we've been flattened, we've been hacked, we've been singed," he said. "But the summer of our discontent is behind us. The past is a prologue to future possibility."
Stringer's attitude is worlds apart from his apology for the PSN outage, Sony's handling of which prompted several fund managers to call on him to step down. Indeed, so confident is Stringer in Sony's current state, and its wide reach, that he argued the firm was in a better position than Apple, saying: "Yes, yes, Apple makes an iPad, but does it make movies? Warner Bros and Fox produce fine movies, but what about their cameras and smartphones? Sony is where art meets technology."
Sony revealed its release plans for two new tablets at the IFA electronics show in Berlin yesterday, and Stringer believes the devices, which run on Google's Android operating system, can take on and beat iPad. "We want to prove it's not who makes it first that counts," he said, "but who makes it better."
The company also announced the formation of Sony Entertainment Network, which will coalesce its online services - including PlayStation Network, the Qriocity music and video services, and those provided by thirdparties - into one, all-encompassing brand

After a huge price slash of the Playstation 3 console on 22nd August, Sony has confirmed that sales in Australia have risen over 400%.
The data is based on NPD Group findings and retailers information, and pertains to both the 160Gb and 320Gb models of the console.
Michael Ephraim, managing director of Sony Computer Entertainment Australia, said: "This new price point really represents fantastic value for money as PlayStation 3 delivers full HD games, Blu-ray capability, plus music, movies, catch-up TV and more on demand."
"Australians love not only games, but also the quality home entertainment PS3 provides. Sales are booming because PlayStation 3 is the best device to connect to your TV, at incredible value, to provide the ultimate home entertainment experience."
Sony anticipates that this momentum will build in the lead up to Christmas, citing Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, Resistance 3 and Playstation Move titles such as DanceStar Party as key drivers for the increase.
The Playstation 3 currently carries an RRP of AUD$349.95 for the 160Gb model and AUD$449.95 for the 320Gb.

While Xbox 360 has comfortably outsold PS3 in the US throughout 2011, the recent price cut for Sony's console is having a marked effect, and analyst Michael Pachter reckons Microsoft will have to react if its system is to hold the No.1 position this Christmas.
He told IndustryGamers the battle between the two high-definition consoles will be a "close call" this holiday season, but predicted: "If Microsoft does nothing, I think PS3 will outsell Xbox 360.
"However, my friends at Microsoft are extremely proud, and they absolutely refuse to tolerate the possibility that the PS3 will outsell the Xbox 360. I think they have the ads printed for the Xbox 360 price cut, and will drop them on us the instant they see PS3 sales greater than 360 sales.
"In the meantime," he added, "I think we'll see a reduction in the price of the Xbox 360/Kinect bundles (similar to Wal-Mart's "goof" last weekend), and Microsoft will use that to keep the PS3 at bay until they decide whether to match price for the console only."
In Europe at least, Microsoft said last week it's confident that a range of upcoming Xbox 360 games and bundles will be enough to help the console gain the No.1 position.
Starting next week, the Xbox maker will be adding a downloadable copy of Child of Eden to its existing Kinect hardware offering in all Xbox Live territories apart from Japan.

Remember that mysterious third person Call of Duty game? It now looks like it’s unlikely to ever see the light of day.
The studio that was working on it, Sledgehammer Games, has confirmed that the project has been canned. And with Sledgehammer now one of the multiple studios working on Modern Warfare 3, it seems that the game has been abandoned.
“We came on board to make a third person action adventure game, in the Call of Duty franchise,” Activision VP and GM and the founder of Sledgehammer Glen Schofield told Gamespot.
Sledgehammer’s Michael Condrey added: “We were working on it about six months. We had a prototype together that was pretty compelling. It looked really good.
“The opportunity to work on the biggest thing in the industry with Infinity Ward, which has demonstrated that they know how to do exceptional software, was just an opportunity we couldn’t miss.
“There is a lot of people on the team who have worked on Call of Duty before, who have worked on first-person shooters, so there is a lot of built-in knowledge about the FPS genre and a lot of passionate gamers.”

Not that Sony's PlayStation 3 hasn't been touched by Midas before, but this is the first time we've seen the new(ish) form factor doused in such official fashion. Per usual, it'll be the homeland that's treated to the NINOKUNI Magical Edition PS3 console, a decidedly wizard-approved bundle that'll include a copy of Ni No Kuni. The only edition available will boast a 160GB hard drive, a single Dual Shock controller and a glorious icon on the lower-left of the machine. It'll be available in Japan this November for ¥33,780 ($440), but only in "limited quantities." So much for magic that lasts forever, huh?

LG has unveiled an alternative to Sony's recently announced PlayStation-branded 3D TV that allows two gamers sat side-by-side to view two separate images.
As reported by Stuff, the LW980T, due out in September, comes in two different models: a 47 inch screen priced at £1799 or a 55 inch screen for £2499.
As well as the local multiplayer-friendly Dual Play display that simultaneously outputs two separate images to opposite sides of the viewing angle, the set also offers various SmartTV features, including 3D video on demand and BBC iPlayer, Facebook and YouTube apps.
It packs a crisp Nano Full LED display and comes in at a slim 26.4mm thick.
The set includes seven pairs of 3D glasses out of the box, but you'll need to pay extra for the all-right and all-left Dual Play specs.
In comparison, Sony's more modest 24 inch set launches this Autumn priced at £499.

Activision has confirmed the suggested retail price for the Modern Warfare 3Hardened Edition: $99.99, which is $20 more than previous Hardened Editions. TheModern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition comes with a one-year membership to Call of Duty Elite, bonus in-game content, a Juggernaut XBL avatar skin, a 100-page field journal and new disc art, all in a fancy steel case.
So far, Gamestop and Amazon have the Hardened Edition listed at $99.99, while EB Games Australia is charging $158 for the same package. Modern Warfare 3's jump in price may be attributed to the one-year Elite access alone, which is valued at $50 and bumps users up to "Founder status," which includes an in-game emblem, player card, camouflage and an XP boost. Or, it may all go to pay the air-conditioning bill at the Call of Duty XP Event -- we hear it's awfully temperate in that hangar.http://www.joystiq.com/2011/09/03/call-of-duty-xp-event-modern-warfare-3-hardened-edition-priced/

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/09/01/d...-motherboards/
It is a well known limitation that recent PSPs cannot be downgraded below the firmware they shipped with. For example if you bought a PSP that initially had firmware 6.35 on it, you can’t go below that firmware (the real limitations are a bit more complex and motherboard-related but that will do for this article).You can’t for example, go down to firmware 6.20, a firmware that many people enjoy because it is (for now) the last firmware on which some PSPs can install a permanent Custom Firmware (by opposition to a Light Custom Firmware which gets “uninstalled” every time you turn the PSP off, a limitation that some users don’t really like).
So, the rule was that recent downgraders wouldn’t let you go down to firmware 6.20 if your PSP motherboard is of type “9g”… this is going to change soon, as Davee announced (here and here) he has a Beta version ready for a downgrader that allows these recent PSP models to downgrade to firmware 6.20. This is still under testing but I am assuming it is just a matter of hours before we see a release. Thanks Davee!

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/09/04/c...ur-9g-to-6-20/
Ok, I’m seriously late on this one, especially since I’m the first one who actually blogged about it when it was still work in progress, besides Davee himself. Well it seems to be tough for me to handle my everyday life, as well as blogging here, and keep working on Wagic at the same time
Anyways, I won’t go into details, if you want to, check Davee’s blog entry, or my own post on the subject. The bottom line is, if you’re the owner of a PSP 3000 with motherboard 9g (if you’re not sure what motherboard you have, the tool PSP Everest will let you know), you can now downgrade your PSP to firmware 6.20 (while the previous version of the downgrader would only allow you to go down to 6.35). What’s the point you ask? Well, among other benefits, 6.20 is the firmware that will allow you to flash a permanent Custom Firmware to your PSP (something that I personally don’t recommend, but I know people like this feature)

This one is probably going to be painful to watch for all of you who had this happen to them “for real” and don’t have access to this “probably-not-legal-in-most-countries” Ta88v3 downgrader. Developer Yoti shows us a video of him installing 5.50 Gen D3 on a ta88v3 (a guaranteed brick, since apparently the installer doesn’t check the motherboard type), and then unbrick it with a Pandora and a magic memory stick.
Of course, if you’re the owner of a Ta88v3, you probably already know that the Magic Memory Stick + Pandora battery combination don’t work on your motherboard, the kit in this video is a different one, allegedly based on some leaked content from Sony’s official unbricking tools (and therefore, you won’t easily find download links).

E3DIY Team has released a video of their future chip to the downgrade of a PS3 FW 3.70 to a 3.55 FW. The developers suggest that this method requires no welding on the PS3 Slim (unlike PHAT), it works on the NAND and NOR, and that is done in one click and in less than 5mns for the entire operation. The video does not show the flash to E3 secrecy around the unit.

They didn't earn highlights during Sony's IFA 2011 keynote, but it did slip out a few more pieces of home theater hardware that are more likely to end up in your living room than its outlandish 3D helmet. The SMP-N200 replaces the earlier Netbox that debuted last year with a refreshed design and support for HD and 3D. Unsurprisingly, this Blu-ray player (without the Blu-ray) also supports DLNA "throwing" of content, making it a natural Apple TV-style tie-in for the Tablet S and Tablet P once they launch. Moving on, the VPL-VW95ES is a proper replacement for last year's VPL-VW90ES that we'll probably get more properly acquainted with later this week at CEDIA. For 2011 it's been refreshed with 3D conversion capabilities, an integrated 3D emitter to sync the glasses and the ability to set and memorize different lens positions to switch seamlessly between 16:9 and ultrawidescreen projecting. Finally, the BDP-S185 Blu-ray player was announced, with compact size and power consumption that Sony claims is 47 percent less than the previous year's models as its most notable features. All should start shipping in October, no specific word on pricing yet.http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/04/sonys-new-internet-tv-box-projector-and-blu-ray-player-make-an/

SCEE chief Jim Ryan says a sub-£90 PSP will grow the platform’s audience and draw in the younger consumer.
A new-look PSP was unveiled at Gamescom last month. As well as a fresh design, it omits the wi-fi functionality and has a new budget price.
“You will see the audience skew younger,” said Ryan. “At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift. It’s a device to play UMD games. It’s all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young – teens and much younger – they are happy to just play the game. If taking wi-fi out is the price to pay, we’re happy to. The €99 price tag is a real barrier that we’ve got under which will help us lift off.”
Sony has been surprised by PSP across Europe this year, with gamers responding well to the budget range of games and a lower price.
“We delivered very well on the Essentials software range,” he added. “Having a catalogue of high quality PSP games for £9.99 gave us a kick-start. It’s very successful across UK, Europe and emerging markets.”The new PSP will also prime a new generation of handheld gamers ahead of the similar-shaped high-end Vita, added Ryan.
“PSone fans upgraded to PS2, and the first adopters of PS3 were PS2 owners. So the form factor might speak to that, but it happens regardless. PlayStation has an army of followers.”

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia announced a 400% PS3 sales jump last week, and has today confirmed 300% in New Zealand.
The increase follows the price drop of the PS3 worldwide on 22nd August, which saved New Zealand consumers NZD$150 per console (approximately).
David Hine, director of sales and marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment NZ, said: "The PS3 is already the number one selling console. The new price point represents fantastic value for money as PlayStation 3 delivers full HD games, Blu-ray capability, plus music, movies, TVNZ Ondemand and more. It is the ultimate home entertainment experience."
The PS3 160Gb model now retails for NZD$479.95, and the 320Gb model for NZD$579.95.

PS Vita will launch in Japan on November 12, according to an unconfirmed report on GamAlive.
The site claims global press outlets should also have received Vita units by that date, and that the system is expected to be released in the West in March, shortly before the end of Sony's fiscal year.
Sony will reportedly be bringing 18 unannounced Vita games to the event, which kicks off on September 15.
Vita has "a better chance" of success than Nintendo's 3DS, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau told CVG last month.

Watch out, teenagers of Europe -- Sony's new, less costly PlayStation Portable is coming for you! So says Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe head Jim Ryan in an interview with MCV, pointing to the lower price barrier as aimed at a "younger" crowd.
"It's all for the audience. If we are going to take PSP very young -- teens and much younger -- they are happy to just play the game," he explains. "If taking Wi-Fi out is the price to pay, we're happy to." Ryan also believes that the price point will give the console a much-needed sales bump, especially during the upcoming holiday season. "At €99/£89 it will make a great Christmas gift."
The latest iteration of Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld console, dubbed the E-1000, was unveiled last month in Germany at Gamescom 2011. It should be arriving exclusively in Europe "this fall."

After the hacking of DCEmu earlier in the year many of our websites were lost and then merged into one website, this meant a lot of homebrew releases were lost in the wilderness. One of DCEmu`s favourite coders over the years was and still is Deniska who is famous for so many releases for the PSP Homebrew scene, many that gave some of the very biggest homebrew releases over the years for the PSP.
Let me remind you of his releases:
Deniska whos site is now back to life was the coder behind Map This which was a map software for the PSP which actually helped sold thousands worldwide and gave the GPS adapter for the PSP a reason for owning it. Deniska was also responsible for ports of opensource games such as Rise of The Triad, Bermuda Syndrome, Biniax 2, Circus Linux!, Dave Gnukem PSP, Defendguin, Dodgin' Diamond II,Hex-A-Hop, Jazz JackRabbit, Kill Everything That Moves, Metal Blob Solid, Nicky Boom, Nicky II, Nikwi Deluxe, Noiz2sa, Project Starfighter ,Reverzi PSP, Supertux, Toppler, Tyrian. Relive the best days of the PSP Homebrew scene once more.

The Lavalit guys have released a new of their Beatem Up for the Dreamcast, PSP, Wiz, Wii, GP2x and Dingoo:
penBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
History
----------------------
In 2004, Senile Team released Beats of Rage, a free beat-'em-up for DOS inspired
by SEGA's Streets of Rage series and using sprites from SNK Playmore's King of
Fighters series. The spread only by word of mouth, but it nonetheless
amassed popularity very quickly. Senile Team soon released an edit pack allowing
anyone interested to create a mod for the BOR engine.
In 2005, Kirby2000 asked Senile Team to open the source code to BOR. They
agreed, and OpenBOR was born. Development on the engine was continued by the
community, and still is to this day.
Available Platforms
----------------------
OpenBOR has a very modular and portable design inherited from Beats of Rage. Ports
to the following platforms are currently supported:
* Windows
* Linux
* Mac OS X
* Wii
* PSP
* Dreamcast
* GP2X
* GP2X Wiz
* Dingoo a320
In addition to the above, the original Beats of Rage engine (downloadable from
the Senile Team website) is available for the following platforms:
* DOS
* Playstation 2
* Xbox
* GP32
* Palmtop

The PlayStation Network hack that compromised 77 million user accounts earlier this year was a PR nightmare, but the whole affair doesn't appear to have harmed Sony as much as initially feared.
The platform holder was concerned the data breach might put some consumers off returning to the service, but European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan says Sony has been taken aback by the level of consumer engagement with PSN over the past few months.
"What has surprised us is the willingness of the consumers to re-engage when it came back up," he told MCV. "The level of activity on PlayStation Network since then has exceeded our expectations."
Last week, Sony CEO Howard Stringer claimed "PSN is more secure and better than ever". He added: "We are aggressively expanding its content. We have more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales are exceeding what we had before the cyber attacks."
Late last month Sony announced plans to unify online entertainment services PSN, Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited under a new brand titled Sony Entertainment Network.

[source: gitbrew.org] One of the main goals of the Gitbrew project was to bring back what Sony has disrespectfully removed from the majority of PlayStation 3 owners, OtherOS. We have successfully completed that goal with the release of OtherOS++ and since that time we have carried out a great deal of research resulting in progress unheard of in the "PS3 Scene" since Sony's lawsuits against Graf and Geobot. OtherOS++ Project is the culmination of work done by Glevand and Gitbrew, building on top of open source work released by Graf.Linux/BSD has extensive capabilities in the field of research and development making it a powerful tool to peruse and employ the console to its full use. Without Graf, we never would have completed this project. Here is to Graf, thank you for your courage in the fight for Linux.

Sure, we've all thought about how nice it would be to have our PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles in the same enclosure. But, as many similar thoughts go, we left it at that. Not content with letting a good thought simmer, Reddit user timofend accepted the challenge and built himself a gaming mega-machine -- he stuffed the new slim model of Microsoft's console into a PC tower alongside an older 80GB PS3. Looking to save some funds in the process, the über-gamer skipped out on a liquid cooling system -- but he notes that when both machines are running simultaneously, they each hover around 100 degrees Farhenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Hey, we're not complaining... but really, timofend, can we please see a NES /Dreamcast / O.G. PlayStation combo in your next masterpiece? To take a peek under the hood, hit the gallery below.

The PlayStation Network is to undergo maintenance tomorrow, Thursday September 8, between 5pm and 11pm UK time.
During that period PlayStation Store, account registration and account management services will be unavailable.
If you are already signed in before the beginning of the maintenance, you should be able to remain signed in and continue with your gaming session. Trey to sign in after the work begins and you'll be presented with a maintenance notification page.
Sony said earlier this week it was surprised by the level of audience engagement with PSN following April's cyber attack on the service.

Microsoft may well have a "massive lead" when it comes to hardware sales, but the PlayStation 3 is seeing much stronger growth in software sales, so says Sony's publisher relations chief Rob Dyer.
Speaking in an interview with IndustryGamers, Dyer admitted that sales of Microsoft's machine out-paced the PlayStation 3, with one PS3 sold for every 1.6 Xbox 360 units.
However, he argued that where customers have a choice over which version of a game to buy, they're plumping for the PS3 SKU thanks to superior bonus content.
"If you have a choice between buying a PS3 version and an Xbox version of Mortal Kombat, which one are you buying? You're buying the PS3 version because you can play as Kratos," he offered as way of an example.
"Although Microsoft has a 1.6 to 1 index ratio against us [on hardware], we outsold them on Mortal Kombat nearly at a one to one. So that is due in large part to the exclusive content that you're getting on disc. You'll see that happening on almost every case where we've had a game that they've supported with on disc content or with exclusive DLC."
And Dyer cited a number of other examples where multiplatform releases had performed better on PS3 than the 1.6 hardware ratio might predicate. Based on NPD data, Medal of Honor came in at 1.2, LA Noire at 1.22 and NBA 2K11 at 0.93.
He also pointed to Portal 2's performance on the system, helped by Steam integration and a free copy of the PC version, as another indicator that customers would rather play the PS3 version. Though it sold at a 1.6 ratio, "it is below the total index for shooting genre title on both platforms of 1.9."
Given the 360's strength in the FPS field, Dyer is also particularly pleased with how Medal of Honor sold on Sony's system.
"So here Microsoft owns the shooter category where... everyone talks about how that's their genre. Medal of Honor, because we gave away a free copy of Frontline on the disc, wildly over indexed on ours. Microsoft absolutely felt that," he explained.
But what of this year's Modern Warfare 3? Dyer shrugged off concerns that the Microsoft had the fight sewn up by virtue of its timed DLC exclusives.
"They're going to be a month exclusive... But they're not running any higher than what the index ratio is - they're right at 1.6. In spite of all the millions that Microsoft has spent on that relationship with Activision, people aren't voting to buy a 360 version of that over and above a PS3 version, given the installed base."
And when it comes to this year's other sure-fire FPS blockbuster, Battlefield 3, he argued that the inclusion of Battlefield 1943 on the game disc should give Sony the edge.
"As much as people might associate Call of Duty and the shooting genre with 360, we don't see that as a cause for alarm right now. What we're hoping for, given the announcement we made at E3 with Battlefield, we believe that we are going to have a major player here with EA on our platform - and well over indexed given what we're doing with them in order to promote that title."

We knew good and well it was coming, and come it has. Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play has made the natural GSM shift in the States in order to grace Ma Bell's airwaves, and despite the "4G" naming convention, this fellow will be topping out at HSPA+. In other words, LTE lovers will need to look elsewhere. This marks the first launch of a PlayStation-certified smartphone for AT&T, and given that it's been around the block a time or two, the carrier is (smartly) pricing it at just $49.99 on a two-year contract -- a buck-fifty less than what it launched for on Verizon Wireless. As we'd heard, it'll ship with Android 2.3.3, a 1GHz CPU, Adreno 205 GPU, a 4-inch display (854 x 480) and will arrive in an exclusive 'stealth blue' hue. AT&T customers will also be blessed with a gratis Multimedia Dock (DK300) and MC100 music cable, not to mention seven pre-loaded games at no charge. Full details on that are hosted up after the break, and interested consumers can line up to grab their own on September 18th.

The glory days of consoles are behind us, according to a new report from research firm DFC Intelligence.
"We feel the consoles have hit their peak," analyst David Cole said, according to VentureBeat.
He expects next year's Wii U release to drive strong sales, but not Wii-level ones, and says Sony and Microsoft are hesitant to introduce new hardware as they're currently enjoying rising profits from PS3 and Xbox 360 respectively.
But the longer they wait, the more opportunity console makers give platforms like mobiles, tablets and other devices that can play games as a secondary feature a chance to steal market share, Cole believes.
"Systems like the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are having their best sales ever five or six years into their lifecycle," he said. "Unfortunately this means Microsoft and Sony are in no hurry to launch new systems that would generate substantial consumer excitement and spending.
"Games on Facebook and products like the iPad help expand the audience and the way products are delivered. The console business is firmly established and suffers mainly from the reluctance of hardware manufacturers to commit to expensive new products.
"The dedicated console business is still the major driver of industry growth, but we feel overall it has peaked with the current console systems."
THQ CEO Brian Farrell said this week he expects future consoles to drop support for physical discs in favour of cloud gaming, resulting in lower hardware manufacturing costs, lower console prices driving mass market adoption, and no physical goods cost for game makers.

Sony is to hold a pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference next Wednesday, September 14.
It's expected to be a Vita-focused event featuring plenty of game announcements - the platform holder's reportedly bringing almost 20 unannounced titles for the handheld to TGS.
The press conference timing is one day after Nintendo's 3DS product announcement event and one day before TGS kicks off proper with keynotes from the likes of Square Enix boss Yoichi Wada and Sony worldwide studios president Shuhei Yoshida, whose speech title translates as 'The PS Vita's Full Details'.
The company's likely to announce a Japanese release date for Vita and, with any luck, some more info on Western launch timeframes.

The freshly announced Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of 2007 PC shooter Crysis will be digital-only releases.
The game, which was only announced this morning, will cost 1600 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live Games on Demand (around £13.70) or £15.99 on the PlayStation Network.
It will differ from the original via adapted joypad controls (based on the Crysis 2 model) along with various other unspecified “modifications and enhancements”. Stereoscopic 3D support will also be included.
The news comes as a further blow to High Street retailers who are becoming accustomed to an increasingly large number of titles skipping boxed releases in favour of digital retail channels.

Sony Computer Entertainment Asia has extended a deal with Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore which gives final year students on game design courses access to Sony development kits to create projects.
The deal began in 2009, giving rise to the jointly supported NYP Games Resource Centre - an arrangement which has now been extended by five years, reports GameStop.
The resource centre is currently the only PlayStation development and educational facility in South East Asia, and has given rise to two fully fledged games due for release on the PlayStation network: PhaseShift: Threat Beyond the Network and Spell Weaver.
The extension of the deal will also give students the opportunity to create code for the forthcoming PlayStation Vita, with SCE Asia president Tetsuhiko Yasuda hoping to use the program to encourage more students to become professional developers for PlayStation platforms in the future.

Don't be surprised if you see America's Favorite Marsupial (after Kangaroo Jack) tooling around on the highways and byways of this great land. That's right: Crash Bandicoot is old enough to get his learner's permit.
To mark the big guy's 15th birthday, co-creator Andy Gavin took to his blog to share some memories of Crash's early days, naked baby photos, as it were. Our personal favorite is Gavin's story of trying to conduct an intensely technical conversation with Ken Kutaragi while (1) "pretty drunk" and (2) shouting over ear-splittingly loud music. It's a lot of fun, as are some of the Crash-centric memories readers have posted in the comments.
... And hey, while we're thinking about it, if you should happen to see Crash Bandicoot driving around, you should be wicked surprised, contrary to our intro. He's not only fictional, he's a bandicoot. It's an extremely unsafe situation that should probably reported to local law enforcement. Sorry for being so irresponsible.

Sony's Xperia Play smartphone will be available through AT&T on September 18, complete with PlayStation gamepad and running on Android's Gingerbread (2.3.3) platform. The Xperia Play has been available through Verizon since May 26, and AT&T is offering some exclusive content for its customers' patience, including 4G capability, a "stealth blue" paint job, and the Sony Ericsson Multimedia Dock DK300 and music cable.
AT&T's Xperia Play will come with seven pre-loaded games, in a slightly different lineup than we saw with Verizon's release:
Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave
Asphalt 6 Adrenaline
Star Battalion
Madden NFL 11
The Sims 3
Tower Bloxx: My City
Crash Bandicoot
The Xperia Play will cost $49.99 with a new two-year agreement through AT&T, which is drastically less than Verizon's initial offer of $199.99 with the same agreement. However, AT&T's Xperia Play doesn't come pre-loaded with Tetris, which is totally worth the extra $150, in our opinion.

PSXperia is written in Java and runs on Windows, Linux and OS X. Details in the README. Written by Yifan Lu. PSXperia Emulator Converter Tool
1.0 Release
By Yifan Lu ( http://yifan.lu/)
========================================
This tool will take a PSX image that you legally own and convert it to be playable on the Xperia Play with the emulator extracted from the packaged game "Crash Bandicoot."
All you need is to have Java installed.
Run "psxperiatool" or "psxperiatool-windows.bat" to use the command line interface.
Run "psxperiatool-gui" or "psxperiatool-gui-windows.bat" to use the GUI
You must have Java listed in your system's PATH variable.
To view the log output with GUI, start a new console session and type in "java -jar PSXperiaTool.jar" in the directory with the JAR.
Quick Troubleshooting:
If you encounter any error, try building an APK with the default settings (don't change titleid, name, description, etc), and if it works, that means there is an invalid character somewhere.
The titleid must follow Java package name rules (no spaces, no weird symbols, etc). To be safe, make sure the titleid only contains alphanumeric characters and underscores.
Only use PNG images for the icon. Preferred size is 170x170.
Try not to have any spaces in the path names for the data folder, input ISO, and output folder.

----------------------
OpenBOR has a very modular and portabledesign inherited from Beats of Rage. Ports
to the following platforms are currently supported:
* Windows
* Linux
* Mac OS X
* Wii
* PSP
* Dreamcast
* GP2X
* GP2X Wiz
* Dingoo a320
In addition to the above, the original Beats of Rage engine (downloadable from
the Senile Team website is available for the following platforms:
* DOS
* Playstation 2
* Xbox
* GP32
* Palmtop

PCSX2 SVN r4915 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r4913
cmake: fix some linking issue with gold linker (AFAIK only fedora use it for the moment)
r4914
GSdx: New: Dynamic CRC Hacks system (disabled by default).
See tools/dynacrchack/DynaCrcHack.c for full instructions.
For development of CRC hacks (and just for the fun of creating such a system), Allows GSdx to load and use CRC hack logic from an external DLL, and reload it, at runtime, whenever this DLL changes (but act normally if this DLL isn't found).
This external DLL is compiled from a single C source file (a sample is provided, containing the current MGS3 CRC hack logic). There's also a system to automatically compile this C file into the DLL whenever the C file is modified, thus creating a system of instant [save C file] -> [GSdx switches to the new logic].
It's actually a pretty cool system, and might have other usages where it's useful, for the sake of tests/development/tweaking, to modify code logic during runtime. The overhead of such system compared to pre-compiled code is very low (e.g., in the case of CRC hacks which are called thousands of times/sec, I couldn't notice any difference in performance).
Compilation of the C file is currently done using TCC (Tiny C Compiler - http://bellard.org/tcc/ - extremely fast, light and powerful). TCC itself needs to be downloaded separately (~250K download, no install required). The system currently supports Windows only.
r4915
Oops. Now it's disabled by default

There's nothing a like an (almost) fresh and exciting color variant to make us totally forget about thePS4. Besides, this little dazzler will come with a 320GB HDD and two equally white Dualshock controllers, which means you'll only have to spray-paint your PS3 Move, headset, external drive, wheeland eyebrows to match. Look out for it at GameStop in the UK, Germany and possibly other Euro nations too, as well as at Electronic Boutique in Australia from November 1st -- or just pre-order via the source links below.

Call of Duty: Black Ops moves down from No.5 to No.9 and NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat rounds off the top ten at No.10.

While we're still months away from seeing the PlayStation Vita show up in the stores, Sony continues to tease us with more live demonstrations here at the SCEJ press conference -- what we saw just now was a quick walkthrough of the initial setup procedure, and our first look at the interface in action. Setup is simple and predictable: select your region, create or log into your PSN account, enter your birthday -- pretty standard for today's handheld gaming devices. The UI itself looks primed to make smartphone users feel right at home, spreading a cloud of large, friendly app icons across the Vita's five-inch touchscreen.
Our hosts skipped through a few media applications, showing off a pair of movie trailers and concurrently running the device's music player and photo viewer. We didn't see it live today, but Sony suggested that cross-app multitasking is compatible with games as well, stating that a player could hop out of a game session, pop-into a Twitter app, and then jump right back into the game. We'll give you a more detailed account once we've hit the TGS show-floor. Can't wait? Peek our gallery below, or see Sony's live demo above.[/COLOR]

Wondering how many games the PlayStation Vita will be launched with on December 17th? 26 is the answer, with 100 games in total to be released. Launch titles include Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3,Power Smash 4, Fish On, Project N.O.E.L.S and more in the photo above. These will be followed byMetal Gear Solid HD Edition, Rayman Origins, FIFA, etc. If new titles aren't enough to whet your appetite, Sony announced that as many as 500 to 600 PSP titles will be available for download via the PlayStation Network, given that you're willing to re-purchase your last-gen favorites. Don't toss out your UMDs just yet though -- Sony said they are working on a solution to bring your old games to your new handheld, mentioning "special download plans" that they will discuss at a future point. We wouldn't hold our breath, but hit the break for a splash image featuring the full list of launch games you will be able to get -- good luck with the Japanese.

Sony's just announced in Tokyo that the PlayStation Vita will debut in Japan on December 17th, and it'll partner with NTT DoCoMo for the console's prepaid 3G service. Customers will have two choices of connection here: 980 yen ($13) for 20 hours, and 4,980 yen ($65) for 100 hours -- see press release after the break. Alas, the rest of the world will still have to wait until 2012, but you'll know more concrete dates as soon as we do. For now, head over to our sister site Joystiq for the SCEJ press conference liveblog.
Update: Capcom's Yoshinori Ono came on stage to mention that Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would launch simultaneously with the console. Square Enix also announced that the PS2's Final Fantasy X will be remastered for the PS Vita, and it'll be in PS3-like quality; sadly, there was no date nor demonstration.
Update 2: The first 500 units sold will come with 100 hours of prepaid 3G connectivity. Want in? Pre-orders open on October 15th.
Update 3: We now have a video demonstration of the Vita's interface. Enjoy!

Sony's PSP successor, PlayStation Vita, will be released in Japan on December 17.
The company made the announcement at its Tokyo Game Show conference, and also confirmed pricing. The WiFi-only model will retail for ¥24,980 (£205.32), with the 3G model costing ¥29,980 (£246.42).
At E3 in June, sections of the audience at Sony's press conference booed Kaz Hirai's announcement of AT&T as supplier of 3G for Vita. In Japan, that role will be filled by NTT Docomo, which has devised a two-tier prepayment plan. Twenty hours of 3G will cost ¥980 (£8.05), with 100 hours costing ¥4,980 (£40.93).
Sony has confirmed that 26 titles will be available on launch day - though the figure includes apps as well, including a client for Japanese video service Nico Nico and lifestyle app Yuusha No Kiroku - with 100 released before the end of March.
New announcements include Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, which will feature online multiplayer and optional touchscreen controls, and the welcome return of Katamari Damacy.

Need another reason to be interested in the PlayStation Vita? Sony announced during tonight's press conference that it will tie in with the only-available-in-Japan Torne DVR adapter (PlayTV in Europe and nonexistent in NA) for the PlayStation 3. Once synced up, it allows users to remotely tune into live TV streams Slingbox-style, browse listings and remotely schedule recordings via an app on the portable device. It should be ready to go at launch, while the ability to export recorded shows to the Vita like one of Monsoon's boxes will be added later. For now however, we can only look on in envy and hope rumors of a PlayTV 2 eventually come true, and come out here.

We haven't heard much about the PlayStation Suite for quite some time, but at the TGS 2011 opening keynote today, Sony announced that it'll finally be rolling out an SDK for said cross-platform framework in November. Furthermore, Sony's expecting new games and apps to be available for the PlayStation Suite in spring, which means willing C# developers will be busy over the next few months should they wish to deploy their software across certified devices -- these currently include the PS Vita, Xperia Play, Tablet S and the upcoming Tablet P. Of course, we're also hoping that Sony will convince at least one other manufacturer to get its NVIDIA Tegra devices certified for the PlayStation Suite, otherwise it'll be tough to get the ball rolling for everyone.

Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida has demonstrated PlayStation Vita’s ability to play games streamed directly from a PS3.
The president of Sony Worldwide Studios was showing off PS Vita’s Remote Play technology at Tokyo Games Show, reports VG247.
He played Killzone 3 on the PS Vita which was streamed onto the handheld console from a PS3, with minor lag evident. This works by letting Vita users access PS3 games over a Wi-Fi or internet connection.
Yoshida also demonstrated how a PS Vita can be used in co-op play with a PS3. He flew an aeroplane in LittleBigPlanet 2 on Vita, while a colleague was playing as another character on PS3 in the same game. He then showed off Vita streaming film content from a PS3.
The technology is comparable to Nintendo’s upcoming home console Wii U, which allows players to control a game on its tablet controller as well as on TV.
Yoshida said the technology is still in development, but stressed the aim is for developers to access the tech in the near future.

Activision has teamed up with Sony to create an exclusive Move bundle for the release of GoldenEye 007: Reloaded.
Entitled the Double 'O' Edition, the SKU includes a copy of the game, a PlayStation Move controller, a navigation controller, PlayStation Eye Camera and Sharp Shooter peripheral, which transforms the controller into a gun.
It also includes an exclusive multiplayer character for the PS3 version: Moonraker villain Hugo Drax. Like Oddjob on the Wii verison, Drax will come with his own speciality weapon, the Moonraker laser, which can be used in all multiplayer modes.
GoldenEye 007: Reloaded is an upgraded version of the Wii title release last year, which reimagined the classic Nintendo 64 game for a modern audience. The PS3 and Xbox 360 iteration features additional multiplayer modes and the new MI6 Ops challenges.
The Double 'O' Edition will be released alongside the standard game on November 1st in the US, making a November 4th date for the UK likely.

Sony’s mobile gaming push has been taken to the next logical step, with news that developers are to be given the tools to make PlayStation Vita compatible Android games.
We’ve already seen developments the other way round, of course.
Sony Ericsson has released its PlayStation Certified Xperia Play mobile phone, which plays both Android games and a select number of PlayStation titles.
And the upcoming release of Sony’s PlayStation Certified tablets – as well as more compatible mobiles – will continue to blur the lines.
But PlayStation Vita compatibility will for the first time see the tide flowing in the opposite direction, with a dedicated games device finally able to dip its toes into the mobile gaming waters.
A beta version of the new PlayStation Suite SDK will be made available in November.

In the lead up to the Nintendo 3DS launch there was a buzz. The excitement for a new, more powerful, 3D-capable handheld was palpable.
Sure, there were the usual few detractors here and there, along with the 'too-cool-for-3D' folk hanging around the proverbial fence of uncertainty, but Nintendo would break down their defences with a barrage of undeniably awesome games.
Oh they would cave, yes sir! Three or four months tops, everyone and their mum's mum would be happily tapping away on another of Nintendo's handhelds. They'd all be helpless against the old Nintendo one-two punch.
That was the plan. Emphasis on the 'was'.
Fast forward six months and we're idly twiddling our thumbs instead of using them for gaming on the 3DS. While our 3DS' slowly develop a thick layer of dust we're being sustained by the promise of good software, and looking like bunch of mugs while we do it.
Shining a spotlight on Nintendo is a little unfair, this situation is pretty common for newly launched gaming platforms, but the effect a weak launch line-up can have on hardware has been made painfully obvious. It's safe to say Nintendo's momentum has well and truly hit a brick wall.
We know it, you know it and from the looks of it Sony knows it, which is why it's bringing out the big guns for the PlayStation Vita.
Earlier today Sony took to the stage at its pre-Tokyo Game Show press conference and promised to have a staggering 100 PlayStation Vita titles on sale in the handheld's 'launch window'. The list includes WipEout 2048, BlazBlue, F1 2012, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Disgea, FIFA 12 and Ridge Racer (read: Riiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racerrrrr) among others.
It went on to release a list of over 70 PlayStation Vita games that are currently in development, most of which are also intended to be released during the the launch period.
The announcement was followed by Konami's confirmation that a Metal Gear Solid HD Collection and Zone of the Enders HD Collection will be released on the Vita. Capcom chimed in with a fully-featured portable version of Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 and Square Enix sweetened the pot by throwing in a HD version of its much-loved PlayStation 2 RPG Final Fantasy X.
Watch in HD No comments yet, be the first!
Sure the bulk of the games mentioned here are high-definition collections of old games, but with names like Metal Gear and Final Fantasy it's hard see these releases as anything other than a win for Sony.
While the platform holder didn't provide specific dates for what it defines as the 'launch window' conventional wisdom suggests it's thinking of the first three or four months after the Vita's release. Many of these games are also being published on the PlayStation 3 fairly soon and given the proximity of the Vita release date it's likely they'll be ready to make their debut on the PSP's successor shortly after.
It's hard not to be excited for the PlayStation Vita, Sony has very cleverly tied the PlayStation 3's upcoming high-profile releases into the Vita launch. The idea of releasing the same games on multiple platforms does feel a bit underhanded but at the very least it creates an attractive environment for potential purchasers, and gives PlayStation faithfuls the option to choose where they want to play their games.
Has Sony put together the best ever launch line-up of games, and do you think it will be enough to guarantee success over the Nintendo 3DS? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Sony has responded to the shock announcement of Monster Hunter 4 as a 3DS, not Vita, game.
When asked whether Vita owners will also get MH4, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano answered, "I don't know."
"You will have to ask Capcom," he told Reuters.
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida was more optimistic. "Most game publishers operate on a multiplatform basis," he said, tossing Vita gamers a dinosaur-sized bone.
Monster Hunter became a Japanese phenomenon on Sony's PSP machine. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, released December 2010, has sold nearly 5 million copies in Japan alone.
The 3DS will also welcome a port of Wii game Monster Hunter Tri. In order to cope with this, Nintendo has had to develop a clip-on 3DS attachment with a second circle thumb-pad. Eurogamer got its grubby mits on the 3DS Circle Pad at the Tokyo Game Show this week.

We've had plenty of QT with the Vita on the floor at TGS, but battery life is hard to judge when you can't take the device away with you. Back at our earlier hands-on in June we were told that longevity should be on a par with first-gen PSPs, which were all rated at 4-6 hours and -- with the PSP-1000 -- achieved around 3.5-5.5 hours in real-world tests. Now though, Sony says the Vita has just enough juice for 3-5 hours' gaming. We need to play this thing to death before we can be sure, but this does sound like a potential 15-25% drop in minimum play time. Do we care at this point? Not particularly. We're too busy salivating over this.

We found a veritable rainbow of PlayStation Vita prototypes hiding out in the rear of Sony's TGS setup, surrounded by accessories, mock retail packaging, and faux game cards. PlayStation representatives assured us the colorful consoles were just for looks, and only the basic black will be available when the system launches in December. Hit the gallery below for a multicolored peek, or just skip past the break for a view of Gravity Daze's mockup retail box.

An updated clause in Sony's terms and conditions for its PSN service, which has caused uproar amongst gamers because it appears to ask users to forgo their rights to participate in class action lawsuits against Sony in perpetuity, is largely designed to protect against suits in the US, says Sheridans partner and specialist interactive entertainment lawyer Alex Chapman.
The updated contract features an entirely new paragraph 15, which advises that acquiescence to the contract means that:
"If you have a Dispute with any Sony Entity or any of a Sony Entity's officers, directors, employees and agents that cannot be resolved through negotiation within the time frame described in the 'Notice of Dispute' clause below.
"Other than those matters listed in the Exclusions from Arbitration clause, you and the Sony Entity that you have a Dispute with agree to seek resolution of the Dispute only through arbitration of that Dispute in accordance with the terms of this Section 15, and not litigate any Dispute in court. Arbitration means that the Dispute will be resolved by a neutral arbitrator instead of in a court by a judge or jury."
Given Sony's recent problems with customer relations following the PSN security breach, the wording is perhaps not the wisest, but Chapman believes that Sony is making an essential balance between protecting itself from litigation and appeasing already upset customers.
"Whilst this may not be popular with consumers it is really nothing more than any sensible business would do after it has learned some lessons through what must have been a very difficult experience," Chapman told GamesIndustry.biz in an exclusive statement.
"I remember when the GTA Hot Coffee incident hit the news. Overnight all the publishers seemed to change their dev/pub agreements to include new language concerning hidden content. In that way terms and conditions and contracts often act as a barometer of what is going wrong in an industry and this case is no different.
"Sony is clearly balancing the risk of adverse consumer reaction against the risk of facing future class actions. Time will tell whether consumers care enough about not being able to bring a class action to give up PSN access.
What's more, the extensive caveat which Sony applies to the end of the clause, detailing the fact that it may be legally inadmissible, either wholly or in part, means that the publisher is likely to be directing the section at customers in the US. The law, says Chapman, is unlikely to be enforceable in the UK.
"From a legal point of view there is no certainty that this language will have any effect," Chapman continues.
"The applicable law for the kind of disputes that consumers may bring will generally be governed by the country in which the consumer is resident. In the UK it is not unlikely that this would be considered unenforceable under the Unfair Contracts Terms Act.
"However it is probably not the UK that Sony is worried about but the USA where class actions are more common place and the system can mean that defending those actions can be so time consuming and expensive that it is more cost effective to settle even spurious claims."

Hungry consumers have caused Dead Island to sell out – with GAME raising its price to £47.99 – but more stock is on the way.
The first-person zombie action game supplied by Koch Media and published by its Deep Silver label is in strong demand. So much so that GAME and Gamestation has raised the game’s in-store price from £39.99 to £47.99 within the space of one week.
MCV understands the Xbox 360 version of the title has sold out, with a small amount of PS3 and PC copies available in several stores.
However, Koch has confirmed to MCV that more stock is on the way as of today.
Dead Island went straight to No.1 in the Chart-Track Top 40 after going on sale last Friday. It has shipped 1m units in the US.

Sony has confirmed that it is developing an additional battery pack for PlayStation Vita.
The device will add to the standard battery life, revealed earlier this week to be somewhere between three and five hours - something that has sparked concern amongst avid consumers.
"If you're flying from New York to San Francisco or vice versa, you'll have no concerns if you have the additional external battery]," SCEA Worldwide Studios' president Shuhei Yoshida told IGN.
There is no word yet on how much additional battery time the pack will grant, or whether it will be available at the handheld's launch.
Sony announced this week that Vita would arrive in Japan on December 17th.

How do you keep selling a five-year old system? You slap a new coat of paint on it and call it a "limited edition," that's how. Which is precisely what Sony's gotten up to with three newly colored versions of its PlayStation 3. Hitting the electronics giant's homeland this November 17th are a duo of 320GB consoles, offered up in either Splash Blue or Scarlet Red, that come paired with a similarly hued DualShock controller and ¥29980 ($390) asking price. The prettiest of the bunch, however, won't be released until December 15th in Japan, and that's the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Lightning Edition Ver.2. Timed to coincide with the retail debut of the Square Enix-made sequel, that console (pictured above) also boasts a 320GB HDD, bundled copy of the game and a plain old black controller -- all for ¥37960 ($494). If you need to add a little spice back into your gaming life, it might be time to get your import on.

Modern Warfare 3 will not come in a Prestige Edition, Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling tweeted. The Modern Warfare 3 Hardened Edition is priced at $99.99, $20 more than previous Hardened Editions, and includes a one-year membership to Call of Duty Elite as its major selling point. Perhaps without the distraction of making augmented-reality scuba goggles or one-size-fits-all MW3-branded combat boots, Infinity Ward and Activision were able to focus on making the actual game as great as it can be. Perhaps.

Something new from neur0n: GameMenu … and it’s already at v4.
“GameMenu” is similar to the VSH Menu, but instead of VSH (sitting at the XMB), you’re in game… So while you’re jamming whatever game you can press a key combo, which will pop up a menu, letting you monitor/adjust the CPU clock and toggle USB on/off.
You’ll be activating satellite_game.prx in game.txt … not vsh.txt.
The default key combo is START + SELECT … change that in GameMenuConfig.txt.
Update: v5… Fixed Clock Monitor on PRO-CFW

Cool! It’s confirmed the PS Vita will in fact be region-free! That’s straight from the horse’s mouth — @yosp — Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment.
What’s that mean? It means when the Vita is released in Japan first, on December 17th, you’ll be able to import that badboy across the border and not worry about region locked games or content.
Import a Vita from Japan, buy a game in North America, and everything’s gravy, baby

For anyone not in the know: Mobile Assault is a Jungle Strike-esque game … remember that for Genesis? You’re riding high in a ghetto-bird taking out anything and everything below, plus other opposing aircrafts. The textures are slick, especially if you’re jamming the iOS version, and the gameplay is bang-on. Mobile Assault is a must-have for your homebrew collection

via http://psp.dashhacks.com/2011/09/18/...-drum-machine/
Modelled after Andre Michelle’s ToneMatrix comes a PSP version from developer Babkock, which does pretty much the same thing … it’s a 16-step drum machine, letting you craft some pretty cool sounding beats.
From the README:
ToneMatrix is a 16-step drum machine. The Y (vertical) axis represents eight different sounds, and more than one can be played at a time. The X (horizontal) axis represents one measure in sixteenth-notes.
Select a node on the grid with the D-pad and the X button, and that sound will be played in time. Press O to stop/resume playing, and use /\ (triangle) to clear the grid.
Press START to use the menu, and use the D-pad to select a menu item or change a value (like the tempo), and X (cross) to confirm your choice. Press SELECT for help.
Perhaps next version we’ll be able to export our creations

Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Vita will be free from region coding.
Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida released the information via his Twitter feed, replying, "Yes, it is," when quizzed on the issue by one of his followers.
Without region locks the Vita could theoretically be imported by gamers in outside of Japan when it launches there on December 17.
However, Yoshida subsequently discouraged those considering this option, saying, "I personally do not recommend that."
"Sorry, I'm not explaining well, but from my experiences owning both US and J game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances."
As an example, Yoshida offered the traditional difference in the use of the X and O buttons in Japanese games, where O typically means "yes" and X means "no" - in European and American games the opposite is generally the case.
Sony also released information on the Vita's battery life, and the price of its memory cards. When running a game, a fully charged Vita will yield 3 to 5 hours of play, which equates to around 5 hours of video playback, or 9 hours of music.
The 4GB model is 2,200yen ($29/£18), 8GB is 3,200yen ($42/£27), 16GB is 5,500yen ($72/£46), and 32GB 9,500yen ($124/£79). The Vita's European release is expected early in 2012, though no official date has been set.

Speaking to Game Informer at last week's Tokyo Game Show, Sony Worldwide Studios' Shuhei Yoshida said the company realised the time taken to update PS3 firmware was excessive. "It's very annoying when you only have one hour in your busy life to play a game, and when you have to spend 30 minutes out of that one hour to update the hardware," he said. "So it's not necessarily the frequency of how we update, it's the intrusiveness of the current process we have on PS3 and PSP. I cannot talk about specific plans, but we are very aware of the issues, and we'd like to address those issues on PS Vita."

September 20th, 2011, 00:37 Posted By: wraggster
Everybody's favourite games industry analyst Michael Pachter has said Grand Theft Auto's reign as king of the mainstream franchises has been toppled by Activision's Call of Duty - but it may make a comeback.
"Call of Duty is bigger, and GTA will not maintain its position as the world's biggest mainstream franchise," Pachter told IndustryGamers recently.
GTA IV caused such a fever pitch that ravenous fans would bring gaming sites grinding to a halt with the release of each trailer. But since then, Activision's yearly first-person shooter series has sold in droves, breaking sales records as it goes.
"Eventually, Call of Duty may suffer from fatigue, and GTA could keep chugging along," added Pachter, "but it will be 8 years before we can make that call."
He has a point; Activision has seen great success with its aggressive annual releases which seem to keep getting bigger each year - but is an approach that could ultimately exhaust the series' appeal more rapidly than gaming's other major franchises (although EA Sports may beg to differ).
On the flipside, Rockstar takes its merry time with GTA, letting fans' anticipation build and ensuring for bigger evolutional jumps between sequels. Take-Two recently confirmed that it's shipped a massive 114 million units in the GTA series since the release of the first game on PSone.
The yet-to-be-unveiled GTA V is expected to be released in late 2012.

The Call of Duty Elite beta has gone live for PS3, Activision has said.
Confirming as much via Twitter (thanks Shacknews), the publisher said: "The first batch of invites to the #CODEliteBETA went out for early PS3 sign-ups."
The lucky first batch of gamers reportedly got their invites and access to the beta over the weekend.
If you've signed up, but not got your invite yet, don't fret; Activision says there's "more to come in the coming days/weeks so keep an eye out!" If you haven't signed up, do so over here.
An annual membership to the premium Call of Duty Elite service will cost £34.99/$49.99. Loads more details on what it is and what you get for signing up through here.
There's currently no word on when the Xbox 360 beta will go live.

Upcoming fantasy role-playing game Skyrim contains a reference to rape and includes a drinking contest, the US ratings board has revealed.
Skyrim features blood and gore, intense violence, sexual themes and the use of alcohol, according to the ESRB, which awarded the game a Mature rating.
The ESRB's summary goes into further detail:
"This is a fantasy role-playing game in which players assume the role of Dovakin, a prophesied figure with the power to combat dragons in the fictional world of Skyrim," it reads.
"As players traverse through mountainous open-world environments, they complete missions and quests that impact the eventual fate of their character. Players use swords, bows and arrows, axes, and magic attacks (e.g., fireballs, ice shards) to kill various enemies (e.g., wolves, dragons, human bandits and soldiers).
"As players engage in melee-style combat, some sequences are highlighted by slow-motion effects, particularly for decapitations. Large blood-splatter effects also occur during combat, and some environments are stained with blood or body parts (e.g., heads impaled on spikes). Some sequences allow players to injure/kill nonadversary characters, including prisoners chained to a wall; they scream in pain amid splashes of blood or fire.
"As the game progresses, the dialogue and on-screen text contains references to sexual material (e.g., ". . . all the whores your heart, or any other organ, desires," "She . . . raped the men as cruelly as Bal had ravished her," and "Remember when you thought [he] was . . . intent on making you . . . into his personal sex slave?").
"Alcohol such as wine, mead, and ale can be purchased and consumed by players' character throughout the game; and in one sequence, players can engage in a drinking contest with another character, which eventually results in slurred speech (e.g., "One more. No problemsh . . . Thash grape!")."

All 615 GAME and Gamestation retail outlets will offer PlayStation Network downloads and subscriptions from today.
We are delighted to be expanding PSN digital gaming into all our UK stores," said group commercial strategy director Tricia Brennan.
"Our reward card data shows that we are introducing new customers to digital gaming. As many digital downloads are smaller than full games, with lower prices, we are also seeing customers choosing to buy more frequently."
Over 40 different PSN wares will be available, from full games to add ons and subscriptions.
"Our store teams are using their expertise to introduce customers to digital downloads for the first time. There has been a huge amount of interest and engagement in the PSN offering and in the weeks ahead we will bring even more great games and add-ons to the range."
The roll out follows successful trials in August.
"We're delighted that GAME are extending their PlayStation digital offering to the entire network of GAME and Gamestation stores within the UK," added SCEE's VP of sales and planning Robert Fisser.
"This will ensure that access to PlayStation Network continues to be as simple as possible, allowing more people to experience the incredible games and entertainment available."
Last week it was announced that The Game Group would also start selling music and Blu-rays.

Speaking to Gamespot, Marvel has confirmed that the video game rights to "The Avengers" IP have reverted back to the company, enabling it to explore "potential publishing and licensing opportunities."
Marvel's film division is on the verge of successfully concluding a multi-year plan to bring its greatest heroes, The Avengers, together in a blockbuster outing. Directed by Joss Whedon and scheduled to smash cinemas in May 2012, The Avengers is preceded and supported by films centered on each of the team's most prominent individuals. And alongside each of those films has been a tie-in game. Marvel's film strategy and culmination was mirrored by game publishers with Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America games -- right until The Avengers climax was canceled behind the scenes.
Presumed to be in the hands of THQ's now-shuttered Australian studio (one of many victims in THQ's shift away from licensed titles), The Avengers looked to be a first-person action game starring an irradiated scientist, a cocky technologist, a norse god, a temporally misplaced super soldier and some guy with a bow. Whether that blueprint will survive or transfer to a new publisher is a question that won't be answered fully until Marvel confirms a new licensor.
With the movie due in 2012 and the marketing guys insisting on synergy, there's very little time to start over and develop a quality game -- so, probably plenty of time to develop an average licensed game.
(With an apologetic nod to the decent Captain America: Super Soldier.)

You'd think that the PS Vita swooping in to replace the PSP would make for some awkward Christmases at the PlayStation household. But according to Siliconera, the ex and the new wife can talk to each other just fine.
We knew that the Vita would be able download PSP games from the PlayStation Store, but what we're just now learning is that the new device will be able to play AdHoc multiplayer with the PSP in games that support the feature.
Nice to know everyone's getting along; we just hope the Wi-Fi-free PSP is being appropriately shunned.
... you know those cupcakes it brought were store-bought, don't you?

Finally, the PS3 firmware update you've all been waiting for! Next time you fire up your PlayStation 3, you'll be rewarded with a system software update -- version 3.72, to be exact -- which delivers "system stability during use of PS3 format software" as well as "improved" network services. And ... that's it!
The good news: It's only a 10-minute update. The bad news: It comes less than six weeks after the last one. Anyone else get the feeling these constant updates are an attempt to convince us to upgrade to PlayStation Plus, if only for the Automatic Update?

Team Ninja pulled an Apple-style "one more thing" at its pre-TGS party, announcingDead or Alive 5 at the last minute and showing an early trailer. At that event, studio head Yosuke Hayashi called DOA 5 a "fighting entertainment" game, something distinct from other fighting games.
Later, in an interview at Tecmo's TGS booth, I asked Hayashi to clear up that terminology. The early generation of fighting games, around Street Fighter 2, he said, "had some of the most outrageous graphics, fun gameplay, and really a lot of stuff going on." He implied that, in comparison, modern fighting games emphasize online competition over wowing players with unprecedented visuals.
"It's not as over-the-top, it's not as much of the entertainment aspect that the originals had, and so they seem a little bit dull, in some aspects." The term "fighting entertainment" represents an effort to return spectacle to the genre.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and he University of Central Lancashire have joined forces to offer students experience with stereoscopic 3D.
"It's been great working with UCLan because the staff are keen to move with developments and have taken on board a vision of 3D gaming," said Simon Benson, SCEE's senior development manager and 3D expert.
"They are providing their students with industry informed skills that are very much needed in the future of gaming."
40 students from the university took part is a stereoscopic user study, the results of which will be presented at the 3D Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles. Three graduates recently implemented stereoscopic 3D into their final year projects, and worked closely with PlayStation's 3D team.
"The work we've seen is high quality and at the cutting edge of games development," commented SCEE senior engineer Ian Bickerstaff.
"The industry is in the early stages of 3D gaming and these students are already pushing the boundaries and finding ways to improve the standard of what is the next generation of gaming."
As well as experts, SCEE provided the university with 3D televisions and glasses, a console and a catalogue of 3D software.
"Being able to work with a company like Sony Computer Entertainment Europe and draw on their expertise has been really beneficial to me," said recent games development graduate Stuart Brown.
"I've had a real insight to what it's like working in the games development industry."
The university intends to help SCEE with larger trials, and to add 3D to its TV Production curriculum.

Future and Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have launched Access, a free video download that will be available from the PlayStation store every Wednesday.
The service is similar to FirstPlay, the weekly 99p interactive download that Future launched in April 2010, and ended in July of this year.
"The show is a key part of our Access project delivering high quality original content covering everything that's happening on PlayStation in the UK," said Alan Duncan, SCE marketing director.
"It also gives our partners a new opportunity to reach key PlayStation gamers."
The show will be presented by comedian Lucy Porter, who previously leant her voice to FirstPlay, and will feature reviews, previews and features. Some of Access's content will also appear on Future websites.
"We're hugely proud of the market-leading video content we're producing and this is the perfect showcase for it" added Simon Maxwell, group publisher for entertainment, Future.
"Access reaches PlayStation 3 owners directly at their consoles, offering a completely unique experience, and further bolsters Future's reputation for multi-platform innovation."

Edge publisher Future has teamed with Sony Computer Entertainment UK to launch Access, a new on-console PS3 video show available to download for free every Wednesday from the PlayStation Store.
Hosted by comedian Lucy Porter and billed as a ten minute weekly HD video guide to PlayStation in the UK, it promises to offer "unrivalled access to... the best games, the biggest industry events and SCE UK's Access community".
The show will include previews, interviews and features, with selected content subsequently appearing on Future's games websites, including CVG and GamesRadar.
Episode one of Access, which is available to download now, features Resistance 3 and FIFA 12 segments, and reports directly from SCE UK's Access tour, a recently launched series of consumer-focused events offering gamers the chance to get hands-on time with upcoming PlayStation releases.
SCE UK marketing director Alan Duncan said: "The show is a key part of our Access project delivering high quality original content covering everything that's happening on PlayStation in the UK. It also gives our partners a new opportunity to reach key PlayStation gamers."
Simon Maxwell, Future group publisher, entertainment, added: "We're hugely proud of the market-leading video content we're producing and this is the perfect showcase for it.”

The PlayStation Network has been out of action for over three hours and there is currently no indication when it will be back online.
While there are no updates on the US or European PlayStation blogs concerning the unscheduled downtime, both divisions have acknowledged the current outage via their official Twitter accounts.
“We're aware that PSN is currently unavailable and working with the technicians to find out when it will be restored. Apologies,” SCEE said earlier this afternoon via the social networking service.
Most recently, it added: “PlayStation Network engineers are working hard on restoring the service. However, we have no news on when it will be back online.”
Sony’s online entertainment service was compromised by hackers in April, resulting in a six-week outage, the loss of 100 million users' personal details, and former PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai's humble apology at a Tokyo press conference.
But earlier this month, Sony CEO Howard Stringer said that was ancient history, claiming that PSN is " more secure and better than ever", with “more than three million new customers since the network came back online, and sales… exceeding what we had before the cyberattacks”.

With the Tablet S on sale, it was really only a matter of time before its inevitable teardown, and here to fill our need for splayed circuity is one from TechRepublic. Seeing as most Honeycomb tablets have similar internals, there aren't too many surprises to be had, but the outfit did curiously find a hole for a cellular modem, as well as an easy to replace battery and an internal plastic frame that adds rigidity (pictured above). If you're ready for 74 photos of the slate being torn asunder from every possible angle, a source link awaits you below -- if not, can we humbly recommend our preview?

Speaking to CNN, a Sony spokesperson has confirmed that therevision of its PSN terms of service to forbid class-action lawsuits was prompted by a US Supreme Court decision from earlier this year.
The highest level of the US legal system had ruled that AT&T was entitled to block disgruntled customers from binding together to bring class-action lawsuits, reversing the rulings of lower-level courts which had described the measure as "unconscionable."
"The Supreme Court recently ruled in the AT&T case that language like this is enforcable," the spokesperson said. "The updated language in the terms of service is designed to benefit both the consumer and the company by ensuring that there is adequate time and procedure to resolve disputes."
While PSN users are able to opt out of the clause in writing within 14 days of accepting the terms, the vast majority are unlikely to be aware it exists. CNN notes that it takes 45 seconds just to scroll through the terms of service to the part that describes the legal waiver.

Developer DICE has announced a timed exclusivity deal for Battlefield 3 DLC on PS3.
Starting with the game’s first download, Back to Karkland, all DLC for the title will be available exclusively for one week on PS3 before it hits Xbox 360 and PC.
The deal apes that enjoyed by Microsoft and Activision which sees all Call of Duty DLC enjoy a period of timed exclusivity on Xbox 360 – typically for around a month.
The agreement is the latest in a long-line of close ties between EA and Sony.
Former EA releases such as Dead Space 2 and Medal of Honor also offered exclusive content on Sony’s machine that was not available in rival SKUs.

To enjoy Uncharted 3, you need a highly developed sense of adventure, the ability to spot unorthodox paths through a chaotic landscape, the patience to stay cool during protracted firefights, and a PlayStation 3.
For those first three, you're on your own, but Sony has a plan to help with the last one: a new Uncharted 3 hardware bundle, including a 320GB system, a copy of the game, and -- why not -- a month of PlayStation Plus access. Despite appearing in the picture, there's no mention of an included PS3 vertical stand.
The bundle will sell for $299.99, the same price as a 320GB system by itself. Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is out on November 1.

Sony has detailed some of the PlayStation Vita's new AR capabilities, including markerless AR and a new Wide Area Augmented Reality feature, charmingly dubbed WAAR.
Whereas many AR systems use one marker point, WAAR uses six markers to create more detailed and defined play areas.
A demonstration of WAAR in action was shown at Sony's Vita-focused session at the Eurogamer Expo, showing tanks fighting across a tabletop and a floor being turned into a racing track.
Markerless AR, on the other hand, uses no cards whatsoever, with the Vita identifying a room's feature points.
A quick demo showed one of Ape Escape's stars dancing around a room, while later on in the presentation a Tyrannosaurus rex bounded around a cityscape, towering over the player.
Sony had previously revealed some of the features at last week's Tokyo Game Show, where it also revealed that certain PlayStation 3 games can be streamed onto the handheld.
Reality Fighters will be the first dedicated AR game on Sony's handheld, which launches in Japan on December 17 with a European release date yet to be announced.

DemonHades us with details and a video of the DH JFW 3.56.
Quote: Hello, this is a video showing the installation of JFW 3.56 DH 3.55 on a console, this version is created only for users stuck in 3.56. The reason you can not downgrade the 3.56 is that since this update, they incorporated a 2 Update 3.60 to prepare. Therefore, no less can update firmware updater than 3.56, because the 2nd update is missing. The video shows a variety of applications such as: - An NES emulator - Showtime - Multimar peek and poke the is not enabled for now but if the pkg type Psn. Again, this is a special version to help people who do not want updater above 3.56, but you need a flasher. Thanks to Alejandro, Jaicrab, and calimba Varicella for their collaboration, the output is delayed a bit because we put all our efforts in the 3.41. So that's the short explanation of DamonHades, and so it's not 1 but 2 custom firmware JFW DH, in one version 3.41 and one in version 3.56, which will come out in early October. The update 3.72 coming out, it was questionable whether any action against the hack was implemented, it would seem not.
It did not take long for Team E3DIY to show the dual-boot 3.72-3.55. The downgrade 3.72 to 3.55 is also functional. The team also announced a new clip included in the pack limited 3K for the same price, for not being welded. So all the PS3 Slim and Phat NOR are compatible and requires no welding. The original deadline for Commercialization is delayed for adding this new clip in the package.

The Lavalit guys have released a new of their Beatem Up for the Dreamcast, PSP, Wiz, Wii, GP2x and Dingoo:
OpenBOR is a continuation of the Beats Of Rage 2D game engine, which was originally
created by the wonderful folks over at http://www.senileteam.com.
----------------------
OpenBOR has a very modular and portabledesign inherited from Beats of Rage. Ports
to the following platforms are currently supported:
* Windows
* Linux
* Mac OS X
* Wii
* PSP
* Dreamcast
* GP2X
* GP2X Wiz
* Dingoo a320
In addition to the above, the original Beats of Rage engine (downloadable from
the Senile Team website is available for the following platforms:
* DOS
* Playstation 2
* Xbox
* GP32
* Palmtop

The Xperia Play's incoming Android 2.3.4 updateappears to add an extra nugget of functional goodness in the form of high-definition video-recording. What, the Xperia Play didn't do so already? Nope, Sony Ericsson neglected to add that functionality to the phone's five megapixel shooter from the start. Fortunately, the new software update rectifies this, so when you're not blasting those PlayStation hits of yesteryear, you'll be able to chronicle your pet's adventures in crystal clear 720p. Courtesy of XDA Developers, see proof of the Play's new HD recording abilities after the break.

A quick heads-up for our friends across the pond: Sony will be taking down a combination of 13 games, websites and services between 5 a.m. and 12 p.m. BST tomorrow, September 25, which is about twelve hours from now. Ish. Look, we're not Time Lords, okay? We can barely grasp the concept of timezones as it is.
Sony also says that maintenance may be extended for some titles/services/websites beyond the estimated window for "testing purposes," which we originally read as "testing porpoises," which seemed way more interesting. Click on through for the list of affected titles.

Sony's slick 3D headset will be a massive game-changer, according to the platform holder.
The device features dual 1280x720 0.7-inch OLED panels mounted in front of each eye (apparently offering an experience similar to viewing a 750-inch screen from 20m away), as well as 5.1 surround sound from integrated headphones.
Named the HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer, it's set to hit Japan on November 11 for 60,000 yen (£481). There's no word on European release plans yet.
"Packed with groundbreaking technology and fitting easily around your eyes and ears, the Personal 3D Viewer is set to revolutionise the way you experience games and movies forever," Sony says.
"... You'll soon be able to immerse yourself completely in a private world of entertainment. Slipping the straps of the device around your head, you'll feel as though you're sat in your own personal cinema.
Watch in HD No comments yet, be the first!
"Two crystal clear OLED screens - the same technology that provides the spectacular display on the PlayStation Vita system - can be adjusted to suit your viewing preference, so you can watch and play in absolute comfort," Sony adds.
"A wide viewing angle is designed to draw you fully into the world in front of you, while all-encompassing sound lets you hear footsteps approaching you from behind, or gunfire blasting from all sides, thanks to three-dimensional Virtual Phone Technology."
The visor plugs into 3D games and movies using an HDMI cable, while built-in controls let you adjust the volume and change settings.

The revamped PlayStation Home will launch this autumn with a free-to-play multiplayer FPS game called Bootleggers.
ShackNews says the "admittedly rudimentary" game will let you unload clips of bullets into and frag fellow avatars.
Described as "a surprisingly violent twist to the PlayStation Home world", it'll be available in Home's Action district, where you'll be able to jump straight into a matchmaking lobby.
Sony released the first details about the revamped Home last month. The core experience will feature a "hub and districts" design that will help you find games, people and places that fit your favourite game genres, according to the platform holder.

Acclaimed 2D indie side-scroller Max & The Magic Marker expands to PlayStation Network on 28th September, publisher Pan Vision has announced.
First released on WiiWare back in 2010, the Press Play-developed effort sees you drawing in your own platforms and other objects to help the titular hero to the end of the level.
The PSN version, dubbed Max & The Magic Marker: Gold Edition, adds updated HD visuals and Move support.
The game is currently also available on iOS, Mac and PC.
"There's plenty to like about Max and the Magic Marker, such as challenging puzzles, novel ideas and great gameplay mechanics," read Ellie Gibson's Max & The Magic Marker Wii review.
"But the emphasis on creativity won't appeal to everyone - especially those who remember when this was all just fields, pipes and clinky gold rings."

Blox is a 2D homebrew game, built using OSLib, featuring 3 different game modes: Classic; Survival, which is always awesome; and Boss mode. Classic being the way V@ughn intended Blox to be. So, ch-ch-check it out!
Classic mode:
•normal game play, battle enemy blocks and upgrade your character to survive. The way Blox SHOULD be played!
Survival mode:
•get touched and get killed!!! Flee from enemies while shooting them down at the same time! (still needs some work)
Boss mode:
•need I even say it? Instead of fighting a mix of bosses and enemy blocks, fight only waves of bosses (and get horribly pummelled)
Expect regular updates

wn has released QuickBoot Test 8... Still in the testing phrase, QuickBoot lets you conveniently boot from one game to another, whether that be an ISO, POPS, UMD, or homebrew, without returning to the XMB. QuickBoot installs like any other plugin; however, you'll also require cmlibMenu, which is included.
Copy quick_boot.prx to /seplugins, copy cmlibMenu to /seplugins/lib, and enable the prx in both game.txt and pops.txt.
The plugin is configurable, letting you define QuickBoot menu colours and what button combo brings up the menu. All that in /seplugins/quick_boot.ini.

DemonHades gives us some sad news today, a delay for the release of their custom, but bad news can sometimes hide good.
The JFW DH will undergo a late start for many reasons, the developer of the OpenPStore is busy with his studies and Blip, author of the NAS'm saying it removed from the scene has the arm in a cast that for the slow development of plug-in manager. This delay forces them to delay the release without they have an exact date (1 week, 2 weeks ...), but the wait will be worth it, a feat that will be implemented, allowing playback of backups requiring a firmware higher than 3.56. We will reveal not only the method that the flaw is not blocked, just the keys. (This has always been a mistake to publish the method). Thanks to The-Green for the information. news via http://emulatemii.com/wordpress/?p=431
We must start by saying that yes, it sure has been a while since our last update. Followers can rest assured though that we have been actively developing all of our projects in one way or another. As mentioned before, all three of us have very little time to work on this stuff due to real life commitments, but combined we seem to be getting things done at what we think is a decent pace.
WiiSX has seen some tinkering to try and get compatibility up, but has run into other issues. We have been keeping in sync with pcsx-reloaded whilst trying to maintain the PPC dynarec for it. Eventually we need to add more recompiled functions to the dynarec in WiiSX, particularly GTE. We initially wanted to do a full PPC dynarec re-write, but that doesn’t seem feasible time-wise at the moment. Future plans for WiiSX also include porting a hardware renderer now that Pete’s OpenGL plugin is open-sourced.
The Wii64 port to PS3 now has a near-complete hardware renderer since our last post. However, the dynarec needs some work to run on a 64bit PPC architecture. The Pure Interpreter core has little (if any) performance increase over the Wii running the same core, so PS364 really needs the dynarec.
Wii64 for the GC/Wii has seen the most in terms of progress. There has been USB2 support added as well as a port of Rice (graphics plugin) amongst other smaller bug-fixes and optimizations since the last release. One notable feature that we’re really excited about is…
That’s right, high-resolution, custom texture paks are now supported on the Wii using Wii64! Of course, this is still Work-In-Progress, but we’re nearing completion.. Expect a release after this feature is complete. We feel like this is where homebrew emulation on the Wii can really shine and provide an enhancement that Nintendo is not able to offer with their official software.

DaedalusX64 is the best Nintendo 64 Emulator available exclusively for the PSP. To eliminate some frequently asked questions: No, the Emulator is not perfect, so any graphical bugs, or speed issues are considered normal. Yes, the audio does not always play full speed and can cause the Emulator to crash. The latest compiled rev of DaedalusX64 can be found below, and I will try my best to upload the latest rev when I'm aware of it's commit. Thank you DaedalusX64 Team, and keep up the hard work.
What's changed in this revision:
Revision 729
[~] Forgot to update roms.ini..
Revision 728

Rev 390 - Corn
[!] Some rendering pipeline fixes and optimizations
[!] Changed amount and order of render states
[!] Updated DList debug output
Rev 391 - Salvy
[~] Minor optimizations in GFX plugin
[!] Don't declare blendmodes as statics since it only makes the binary larger and most games only use a few blends.
Rev 392 - Corn
[!] modified/reverted some of the previous commit since it breaks scaling and debug outputs
Rev 393 - Corn
[!] TEXRECT seems to work fine even in GE when discarding decimal part in coordinates (tnx Salvy)
Rev 394 - Corn
[!] Fixed texture scaling glitch (and simplified transform pipeline) in Conker.
[!] Small change in Vector clipping ASM (scale whole matrix rather than just one vector at the time).
[!] Some clean up in gspmacros and PSPRenderer.
[+] Alternative transform pipeline (using CPU/FPU) for Conker (WIP)
Rev 395 - Corn
[+] Semi fixed missing sprites in DKR (still needs more work, at least now they show up).
[!] Optimized the DKR TnL rendering pipeline.
Rev 396 - Salvy
[!] Unified DKR and JFG ucode tables
[!] Simplified DKR/JFG's Vtx ucode
[!] Simplified abit MoveWord_DKR
Rev 397 - Corn
[!] Optimized TnL paths for DKR
[~] Fixed compile error for enable texture (debug Dlist)
Rev 398 - Salvy
[~] Some code reordering and small clean ups
Rev 399 - Corn
[-] Reverted Texrect since it does not work well with GE after all

The homebrew scene continues to provide interesting content that refer to the playful old glories, but not "technology". This is the case of the coder cmbeke issuing Shuffle, PSP version of the famous game of 15, you will need to reassemble the puzzle where the picture (or series of numbers) with the least number of moves.
The game of 15 needs no introduction. The basic purpose is to reconstruct as we have said the figure or sequence using only the free square in the 4x4 grid, with horizontal or vertical movements. Shuffle tries to break the monotony of the classic game by introducing a counter and a timer moves, plus you can choose from fifteen different images (which we can also customize the game to those replacing them) to put together and enable / disable the display of the numbers of the blocks . It works by using D-Pad.

Our dear fede94boss got to hit the spotlight on our forums for its adrenaline-Take the Ball, returns to the homebrew scene with a new creation. Obstacle This is a homebrew game where the object will lead the Red qradratino across the screen while avoiding obstacles.
As suggested by the same title, Obastacle itself as a game with which to test our reflexes. Obstacles represented by white rectangles are not the only difficulty, we will indeed have to "solve" the levels before the end of time.
All the staff of PSP-ITA can only appreciate once again the work of fede94boss.

Pokopom PSX Pad Plugin v1.6 is released. Pokopom is a PSEmu Pro pad plugin that emulates a DualShock1 and DualShock2 controller for PS1 and PS2 emulators respectively. It only uses XInput, so as to avoid the DirectInput troubles with X360 controllers. It currently has no configuration available, and defaults to use the first and second XInput controllers as pad1 and pad2 respectively.
Pokopom PSX Pad Plugin v1.6 Changelog:
1.6 - 2011-08-12
Some internal changes to DualShock1. Also, now when in digital mode
the analog sticks can be used as dpad and face buttons respectively.
1.5 - 2011-08-11
Fixed a DualShock2 bug that caused Ar Tonelico to crash on startup.
1.4 - 2011-08-09
Fixed tons of bugs on DualShock2, that solves many issues. Thus, it no
longer requires the previous FF12 hack either.
-. Added "pressure" emulation, dunno if it works well though.
-. Added Hot plug/unplug, which seems to work alright.
1.3 - 2011-08-09
Added DualShock2 support for PCSX2 and other whatnots for that emu.
Also, added some vibration stuff from Harakiri's update.
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown-...dualshock.html
There's also a hacky auto_analog to avoid some issue with FF12. It kept
reverting back to digital mode.
-. Changed analog/digital toggle to the spacebar.
1.2 - 2011-08-08
Initial PCSX2 support.
1.1 - 2011-08-08
Minor changes to rumble, added readme on package.
Now it stops the rumbling on close.
1.0 - 2011-08-06
Initial release.

Next month Activision will launch a new US promotion with PepsiCo's Mountain Dew and Doritos, rewarding purchasers with extra XP points for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.
Starting on October 10, gamers who buy the snacks will be able to redeem alphanumeric codes found on the products for slots of "double XP time" in the multiplayer games.
"For many of our gamers, Call of Duty and Mountain Dew go hand in hand, and together we wanted to deliver gamers a one-of-a-kind program around the epic Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer," said Activision's chief marketing officer Tim Ellis.
Buying a larger bottle of Mountain Dew will give gamers more double XP time, and combining that purchases with Doritos crisps will add an extra 15 minutes. There is a limitation of 24 hours of double XP play for each gamer.
"Dew fans have been clamouring for the return of Mountain Dew Game Fuel, so we wanted to really fire them up with a partnership that gets to the core of what Dew is all about," Brett O'Brien , Mountain Dew VP of marketing added.
"With this partnership we get to make sure that Mountain Dew fuels both the fans and their Call of Duty gameplay while they play Modern Warfare 3."
Activision recently won a court case over the use of the ModernWarfare3.com domain.

If any of you fellow UK gamers were planning to do a little online gaming on your PS3 between the hours of 5pm and 6pm tonight you might want to change your plans.
Sony has sent over word that it will be taking its PSN service down for maintenance. This means all PSN related services, including the PlayStation Store, Home and account management will be suspended.
Although Sony has specified the length of downtime as an hour it may be down for a little longer "for testing purposes". As always if you manage to sign in before the black spot begins you should remain signed in.
Sony previously took the service offline earlier this month for six hours, saying only that it was for "maintenance" purposes.

We don't want to spoil Modern Warfare 3, even though the idea that you're desperate to see how the narrative evolves is a touch ... naive on our part. Still, we're going to be very vague about the list of achievements for the game that just popped up on Xbox360Achievements.org.
So, all we can say is that during Modern Warfare 3 you'll "escape" three things and "destroy" four things. Oh, and six cheevos require "killing" things, so we know there will be some killing, in the Call of Duty game. Also? Two that require "aesthetically-flawless cake frosting."
No, no, that's not true. But there's killing.

Following several delays and a European release, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Trilogy is finally set to launch in North America this week on Tuesday, September 27. The high-definition espionage saga should be slipping onto shelves in Blu-ray guise, and in a downloadable bundle on the PlayStation Store. There's no fiscal benefit to the digital version, as Ubisoft says they both cost $39.99.
All three games in Splinter Cell Trilogy support stereoscopic 3D and improved identification with series protagonist Sam Fisher, who must also wear uncomfortable visual gadgetry on his head. The original game, its sequel, Pandora Tomorrow, and Chaos Theory all support native 1080p rendering (though 720p output must be disabled in the XMB forChaos Theory).
According to the tech-savvy scrutinizers at Digital Foundry, the level of care shown inSplinter Cell's HD update is about on par with the economical work in the Prince of Persia HD trilogy. Its relative condemnation identifies the trio as "very basic conversions" of the PC games with rudimentary interface adjustments. The first two games reportedly perform in "an average manner," multiplayer has been cut, and textures are "disappointing." The standout title, DF concludes, is Chaos Theory, which "manages to acquit itself fairly well six years after its initial release."

Jonathan Blow, the independent developer of lauded time-shifting puzzler Braid, has admitted that his upcoming open-world puzzlerThe Witness is unlikely to appear on the current generation of consoles.
In an interview, one of the most outspoken independents in the industry tells us that porting The Witness to the ageing Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 would be too arduous a task given their RAM limitations.
"We like 360 and PS3, but their specifications are over five years old now, and that's a lot in computer years," he tells us. "The kind of tricks we'd have to perform to get this game working on those platforms are such a lot of work that to port it over at this point is just not worth it for us.
"For this type of game, I do wish the new generation of consoles had come out by now. Even if it only meant a slightly faster graphics processor and a lot more RAM.
"Having more memory would make a huge difference to being able to bring a game like [The Witness] to a console. It makes it much easier."
While it's not uncommon for developers to call for new consoles and the increased processing power they would bring, that an independent developer is now admitting that his games would struggle to run on the current generation is one of the starkest indications so far of just how much the Xbox 360 and PS3 innards are showing their age.
Elsewhere in the interview, Blow also reveals his frustrations with how fractured the current consoles have become, with different controllers and ever-changing UIs. "The good thing about a console in the old days was that it was very focused," he says.
"[Now] there's a lot more unsureness in the way you interact, which I think is a mistake. There's a fuzziness to do with what a console is anymore." You can read the full interview with Jonathan Blow here.

After being refused classification when it was initially submitted, House of the Dead: Overkill: Extended Cut has won its appeal and is now rated MA15+.
The Australian Classification Board refused classification for the HD PS3 version of the existing House of the Dead: Overkill for Wii, which had only minor changes to the existing and already rated product.
SEGA Australia immediately sent out a press release confirming its intention to appeal the decision, and made it quite clear how unhappy it was with the rating.
Today, SEGA has confirmed that House of the Dead: Overkill: Extended Cut has been given an MA15+ rating with the consumer advice 'Strong Horror Violence, Strong Coarse Language'.
Darren MacBeth, managing director of SEGA Australia, said: "It is with great pleasure that we announce the success of our appeal. We are proud to confirm that the game will be released in Australia in its original entirety, with no content altered or removed in any way."
"We were confident of successfully appealing the Board’s original decision to refuse classification and appreciate that the Classification Review Board has made a decision that complies with the current guidelines and framework."
An unedited and complete version of House of the Dead: Overkill: Extended Cut will now be released in Australia on 27th October for PS3.

If you've always thought browsing movies on the PlayStation Video Store wasn't quite up to scratch, you now have another option.
Sony US has released a new 'Video Unlimited - Preview' app for the PS3 that lets you easily browse through the 40,000+ movies and shows on the PS Store.
The content from the PS store is mirrored in a more visual menu system that that Sony says will make it easier for you to find the genres, actors and directors of your liking.
Only PlayStation Plus subscribers can download the preview app today, but it will be available to the general user "in a few weeks", according to Sony.
A video of the new browser app is below. There's no word on a UK release.
The PS3 console has reached 51.8 million units sold globally, Sony announced at its Tokyo Game Show press conference this month.

Ubisoft will launch survival adventure I Am Alive on PlayStation Network and XBLA this winter.
"We know people have been waiting for this game to arrive, and we believe it's going to be worth the wait," said Adam Novickas, director of marketing.
"I Am Alive presents a unique take on the post apocalyptic, survival genre by creating more complex and emotional situations for the player. Xbox LIVE Arcade and PlayStation Network are the perfect platforms to leverage the mature and challenging experiences of the game."
The game was first announced at E3 in 2008 as a retail release.
It's developed by Ubisoft Shanghai, which took over the project from Darkworks in March 2009, a move Ubisoft claimed would help it reach the March 2010 deadline.
"The team at Darkworks has respected its contractual obligations on the project and will be a part of the success of the game when it launches," said the official statement at the time.
In a recent interviewwith GamesIndustry.biz, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot spoke about the importance of small, innovative projects.
"Giving diversity to the console is a way to make them consider the company and to consider its capacity to bring new stuff," he argued.
"So for gamers and for Ubisoft it's very important to be able to have new ideas and come with those innovative concepts. Because those innovative concepts don't always stay small, they can really grow and become huge in the industry."

In a post on the PlayStation community forums, Sony confirms that PSN will be offline between 5pm and 7pm BST. During that time, the PlayStation Store, account registration and account management will all be unavailable. Those who sign in before 5pm, however, will be unaffected.
Yet that is unlikely to appease those who have been eagerly awaited the day Battlefield 3's multiplayer beta opens to the public. It has been available for two days to those who pre-ordered through Origin or bought the limited edition of last year's Medal Of Honor.
The beta test will run until October 10, with the full game to be released for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on October 28.

FIFA 12's not even in the shops yet, but EA's already confirmed that its successor will be compatible with PS Move - and now the firm's moved to pledge that its inclusion won't be a "gimmick".
Speaking to the latest edition of the UK Official PlayStation Magazine, exec producer David Rutter said: "It's about trying to make it part of the game in a good way, rather than have it as a clichéd marketing gimmick."
It's a sentiment backed up by EA Sports senior VP Andrew Wilson, who added: "The core focus for us is still on 11-versus-11, twitch-based gameplay. That's where we're investing heavily."
FIFA 12 is released tomorrow in Europe, and is already picking up the expected praiseworthy write-ups.

The team behind ruthless PSP Disgaea spin-offPrinny: Can I Really Be The Hero? is working on a new action RPG for PlayStation 3 called The Witch & The 100 Cavalrymen.
Andriasang reports that it's a dark fantasy sandbox-style affair in which you control an undead warrior called Hyakkihei, one of the 100 cavalrymen of the title.
Summoned by a sorceress called Metallica, you're sent into battle against an opposing witch. During combat you'll be able to wrangle the other 99 troops to suit your needs.
It plays out in a top down perspective, there'll be some some traditional dungeon RPG elements to get your teeth into, around 30 hours of gameplay and plenty of subquests.
Publisher Nippon Ichi has it down for release in Japan in early 2012, but there's no mention of a European launch as of yet.
Take a look at the teaser site for a glimpse of the game's art style.

Sony has warned that it expects the continuing weakening of the Euro to severely affect its finances, saying that the European economic crisis will have a "huge impact" on its business.
Because the technology giant exports so many of its goods to European territories, any weakening of the Euro has direct fiscal consequences. Should one of the EU countries currently teetering on the brink of defaulting on an international loan do so, the Euro would fall ever further.
"There are no countermeasures that we can take for the moment," said Sony's corporate treasurer Hiroshi Kurihara told Bloomberg. "There is a huge impact on our earnings."
Whilst some measures can be taken to limit the extent of damage done by currency fluctuations, the Euro's current decade low against the Yen means that many Japanese exporters are suffering. Korean company Samsung, however, has been able to capitalise on the situation thanks to a weakening of its own currency, the Won.
Measures are being taken to prevent a deepening of the Eurozone crisis, but none are yet to prove effective. Switzerland, in a somewhat unusual display of fiscal benevolence, has pinned its Franc to the Euro exchange rate in an attempt to reverse the currency's decline, but that move is unlikely to counterbalance the potential ramifications of a defaulting Greece or Spain.

Capcom has admitted that the controversial always-on DRM it has used in recent PlayStation Network releases has had little impact, with the publisher saying it had proven "as much a hindrance as a help."
US vice president Christian Svensson told Eurogamer: "Sony has a form of network DRM that we have chosen to use on a couple of titles, really as much as an experiment as anything else, to see what the impact was.
"[The results were] inconclusive, frankly. As far as we can tell, it neither helped nor hindered us. We continue to look at it on a case-by-case basis."
Capcom apologised last year for its failure to make clear pre-purchase that the PSN release of Final Fight: Double Impactrequired a constant internet connection to be played. It then used similar measures for the release in February of Bionic Commando Rearmed 2, though that only required a connection when the game was first booted up.
The publisher was therefore the subject of criticism during the six-week PSN outage earlier this year, during which both games were unplayable. It removed DRM from the PC release of Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition following a user backlash when it was revealed that offline players were limited to 15 of 39 characters.
