The Blu-ray Disc Association announced upcoming specifications for high-capacity write-once and rewritable discs. The BDA proposed two new formats, BDXL, the name given to new 100GB and 128GB discs; and IH-BD, a so-called 'Intra-Hybrid' disc that will incorporate both read-only and rewritable layers. Specifications for both disc types will be published during the upcoming months. Both formats will be incompatible with existing hardware; however, new players designed to take advantage of the new formats will be able to play back existing Blu-ray discs, which are available in both 25 and 50GB capacity points

Many readers have been sending in news of the impending PS3 firmware update that will remove the ability to install other operating systems on the console. (We discussed it here on Sunday.) Over the past few days, legions of PS3 owners have been voicing their anger at Sony's decision, upset that they'll be forced to either lose their custom install or forgo use of the PlayStation Network and be unable to play certain games and movies. Now, hacker George Hotz, known for his iPhone jailbreaks and his PS3 hack earlier this year, has vowed to fight back and restore Linux support on the PS3. He said, "The PlayStation 3 is the only product I know that loses features throughout its lifecycle. Software PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and OtherOS support are all just software switches you can flip. It's unbelievable you would go and flip one, not just on new boxes you are shipping, but on tens of millions already in the field.

Peter Dille admits that cryptic ads of the past made Sony look “arrogant”, but says that new approach is reaping rewards
The decision to change the cryptic, artistic PS3 ads of the past to the more straightforward design of the present – lead by the new ‘It Only Does Everything’ message – has seemingly delivered the goods for Sony.
Speaking at the MI6 marketing conference in the US, SCEA’s head of marketing Peter Dille has admitted that the first generation of PS3 ads received a poor reception from consumers.
“We struggled with our messaging early on to clearly communicate the value proposition of the PS3,” Dille stated, as reported by IGN. “Now I'd like to think that the best, crispiest messaging in the world really wouldn't have done a whole lot to sell a $600 game machine in a very horrendous economy.
“We get questions about the white room and the baby ad quite a bit [see that here]. That whole campaign was to get people to say 'What the? I need to understand more about what this is’. That whole campaign was really about power and the power the PS3 has.
“But what we found was that this whole positioning was a bit intimidating to people. Our research also showed that Sony could be perceived as arrogant.”
This approach has been scrapped post PS3 price drop in favour of a more straightforward approach – as well as the introduction of comedy corporate figure Kevin Butler.
“With our campaign now, we kind of knocked off all those obstacles,” he added. “The arrogance I think has gone away. We kind of gotten back to our mojo with the sense of humour that people came to know and love with early PlayStation advertising.
“I think it's just a more likable connection to the consumer. The campaign is working to drive hardware sales. You're going to continue to see Kevin Butler highlighting new content that is hitting the platform. That will include PlayStation Move later this year and also 3D.”
Dille added that PS3 sales soared 184 per cent following last year’s price drop, with “purchase intent” climbing from 19 per cent to 36 per cent.

David Jaffe has revealed that the development of his new game is "falling into place" - but has once again declined to tell us what it actually is.
The God Of War creator said via his blog that he'd been completing "concrete, game-making tasks" - but didn't confirm or deny rumours that the title is a remake of PlayStation classic Twisted Metal for PS3.
He wrote:
'Hey all- well I gotta say, I have not been this busy in a looong while. And it's really, really good. I love being slammed when the stuff we're slammed with are real, concrete game making tasks. This phase of the game is fantastic, where the pieces SLOWLY start falling into place and you- finally- begin to get glimpses of what you wanted the game to be from the very start. Still a long way to go and still not close to having the game of our dreams yet but we're working our asses off to get there...'
He said his team were 'super slammed' (no s******ing at the back) as they were so busy.
Nearly time to tell us what it is, David. E3, yeah?

Sony’s throwing its weight behind the upcoming PS3 3D update in June by confirming that popular FPS title Killzone 2 will be patched to support 3D in the same month.
As spotted by Gamer Access in the latest edition of PSN series Qore, the move adds triple-A credentials to the firmware update that Sony hopes will allow PS3 to ride the current 3DTV wave.
Whether the game’s 3D update means that previous rumours that a 3D-ready Killzone 3 is preparing for a April 2011 release are now less likely remains to be seen. If the game is on the way, expect a reveal at E3 in June.
Killzone 2 joins the likes of LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD and hopefully Gran Turismo 5 in the list of PS3 titles joining the 3D bandwagon.
UPDATE: Sony has stated that Killzone 2 was just one of many titles to get a 3D demo, and is not destined for a full 3D makeover. The statement, as quoted on IGN, is as follows:
"That last feature included interviews, footage from CES 2010, and a brief montage of SCEA titles intended as examples of what 3D gaming might encompass. It is hard to do justice to just how amazing 3D gaming looks in a 2D presentation—even in an HD product such as Qore.
"However, as we wanted to give our viewers an idea of the possibilities that 3D gaming has to offer, we decided to use stock footage of several first-party games that were on display at the show, including Killzone 2 (a 3D version of the television commercial was shown at CES).
"Unfortunately, our feature did not make it clear that the 2D game footage was included for demonstration purposes only. We apologize for the erroneous inference that 3D versions of LBP, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5 or Super Stardust HD are in production."

Digital software prices slashed ahead of key weekend at UK retail
A routine Bank Holiday sale or an effort to encourage struggling hardware sales – call it what you want, but PSPgo owners old and new will be greeted with some significant discounts the next time they log into the PSN Store.
Several high-profile titles have seen their prices slashed on the service, including the likes of God of War (down from £14.99 to £7.99), GTA Chinatown Wars (£29.99 to £14.99), FIFA 10 (£29.99 to £15.99), Tekken 6 (£31.99 to £15.99) Need for Speed: Shift (£29.99 to £15.99) and Gran Turismo (£17.99 to £13.99).
Permanent price reduction have also been made to a number of games, including many from EA, such as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 which drops from £29.99 to £15.99.
One of the main criticisms of the PSPgo to date has been the price of its software downloads, which compared to those available on the High Street – and particularly to pre-owned prices – are generally much higher.
Whether the price cuts can deliver the sort of hardware sales boost all platform holders look for over a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK is the obvious question to ask.
Here’s the list of discounts in full:

April 6th, 2010, 17:05 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has revealed a number of details on the PlayStation Move, including its battery life - around 10 hours - and the existence of an external port located on the underside of the controller - which it says licensees can ask it about.
According to PlayStation R&D manager Richard Marks, the controller - which uses both motion sensors and the PlayStation Eye camera to track movement - offers the "absolute best tracking".
Detection of the Z-axis is the only way a motion controller can work convincingly in 3D games, Marks told Kotaku.
"You can punch in Z," he said, adding that the Wii allows that too, but that the PS3 actually enables players to reach into a 3D world and manipulate objects.
The Move can be detected in the Z-plane at all times, he said, and with 60fps precision based on the Eye's detection of the position and relative size of the controller's coloured sphere.
Hinting at future possibilities for the Move, Marks highlighted the external port on the bottom of the controller, which hasn't yet been used in demo.
"I think there's a lot of options with having this thing being part of another peripheral, with something bigger that you would hold," Marks explained. "We've had a lot of talks with our licensees about what would make sense for this... We do have this USB cord [at the base of the wand] which is how you charge it. We also have this external port which is proprietary. Our licensees can talk to us about it."
"We don't use it right now for anything, but it has data and power, I guess I can say that much."
As well as confirming a battery life of around 10 hours before the controller would need re-charging via the USB port, Marks said that the Move will work in perfect darkness, although admitted that bright sunlight or a sudden change in light conditions could cause it problems.
"Dark is perfect," he said. "Dark is great." Direct bright sunlight on the camera would cause problems, he said, but he pointed out that people don't usually play games with the sun shining into their televisions.
"For a typical little bit of clouds going past the sun and stuff, you wouldn't ever need to re-calibrate that," he said. "In a case where it's really strong sunlight versus not-sunlight, you probably would have to re-calibrate that."
Marks also said the Move is significantly more sensitive than its competitor controllers.
"You could spin it all the way around eight times in one second," he said. "You can't [physically] do that, but in a short time you could get a burst [that fast]."
The Eye captures at 60fps, he said, while the rate of the data transmitted from the Move is "much higher".
He added that the Move can be used from between three and 10ft away from the PlayStation Eye camera.
"The kind of sweet spot everyone uses for the games is five to 10 feet," he said. At 10ft, the Eye can capture footage 12ft across and has a field of view of 75 degrees, he added.
The first Sony Move games - as well as the controller's official name - were unveiled at this year's GDC. Sony also revealed the Move controller's 'sub-controller', which works similarly to the Wii nunchuk, and a sub-$100 price tag. The hardware is due to be launched this 'fall'.

Sony Computer Entertainment has said that the latest firmware upgrade will disable the Install Other OS feature of the PlayStation 3, meaning those that upgrade will be unable to run Linux on the home console.
Dropping support for Linux is down to "security concerns" according to Sony. Last month, notorious hacker George Hotz released an exploit for the console, allowing read/write access to the PlayStation 3 via Other OS and Linux.
The PS3 Firmware 3.21 will be released this Thursday, and although users are not forced to upgrade, the console will be unable to access the PlayStation Network and play any games or movies that will take advantage of the new firmware, as well as miss out on future upgrades and features.
The Other OS feature was dropped from the newer PlayStation 3 model by default when it was released last year.
Although no figures are available on how many PS3 users have installed Linux on the PlayStation 3 – and Sony indicates that it's only a small percentage – predictably the official PlayStation blog is being swamped with complaints and disappointment.
According to Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog, the move is a "pre-emptive strike" against the possibility of the hardware running cracked games in the future.
"In taking such a measure to counter the hack, the logical conclusion is that Sony wants to the limit overall number of PS3s out there potentially capable of running copied games - an extraordinary pre-emptive strike against the possibility of piracy," wrote Richard Leadbetter.
Sony warned that any users that currently run Linux on the console should back-up valuable data on the Other OS partition of the hard drive, as once upgraded to firmware 3.21 they "will not be able to access that data following the update."

The first map pack for Modern Warfare 2, “Stimulus Package”, hasn’t even been released yet, and there are talks of continuing DLC for the title. And why not? Modern Warfare 2 was an immense success, and the DLC for it will certainly follow in its virtual footsteps.
Infinity Ward’s community manager Robert Bowling, recently spoke with NowGamer on upcoming DLC for Modern Warfare 2, plus the price of the first map pack. The latter has been under fire for it’s price, which is a hefty $15 price tag(with five maps, that’s $3 a map). Bowling defended the price of the map pack, saying it was “worthwhile.”
“I have no doubt that anyone who downloads this map pack is going to get their money’s worth. They’re going to feel their investment is worthwhile. Because if you’re playing Modern Warfare 2 like myself or many other people do every night, that’s actually going to give you a bunch of new mileage and a bunch of extra gameplay – to really explore and discover them and to really, you know, come up with new tactics and experience them in a whole new way. Regardless of what the price is you’re going to feel your money’s well-spent.”
Also during the talk, Bowling also confirmed that at least one more DLC pack is being planned for Modern Warfare 2. In the original Modern Warfare, the spectacular title only received one pack, so it’s a nice change to see more commitment in the DLC area.
“We’re definitely going to do at least one more DLC pack, but the direction of it and specifically what we’re going to do hasn’t been determined yet.”
The Modern Warfare 2 “Stimulus Package” DLC hits PSN on April 30th.

After almost two years, I continued this emulator. With more knowledge about programming and D, I started a new version from scratch in January of this year. It was slow because I have other things to do. But I have been working hardly on it this week and now I have released a version that can run some homebrew. Enjoy!

Square Enix is exploring the possibility of reissuing PSOne RPG Final Fantasy IX via PSN.
According to producer Shinji Hashimoto, the studio has been gathering feedback on whether fans would like to see the game appear on the digital storefront.
"Thanks to everyone for your opinions on FF9," Hasimoto wrote on Square Enix's Twitter feed. "Regarding an FF9 download release, everyone is so passionate about it that I'll be proposing it at the next board meeting. Look forward to next week."
Final Fantasy IX was the last main entry in the franchise to appear on the PSOne. Released in 2000, the game took the series back to its fantasy roots.
Predecessors Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII are already available for download on PSN.

News/release from wethegreenpeople
Hey guys! I got this idea from an iTouch app I saw, thought it was great so I made this. It only took me like 5, 10 minutes to make so its a bit rough around the edges (hence beta release) but I hope you'll bear it until next release.
SonicBoomPSP is a homebrew app that allows you to play a high pitched sound that only people under 20 can hear! Put it under your little brothers bed and watch as he struggles to find it while mom and dad can't hear it at all!
How to use it:
Extract the ZIP file copy the SonicBoomPSP beta folder to your psp.
MSO:>>PSP>>GAME>>SonicBoo mPSP beta
Change Log:
beta1: Release
Todo
1. Fix logo at start of the game, its kinda rough.
2. Add graphics, I already made the background and a couple buttons
but I thought I'd save that for next release xP
3. Add timer, the timer will count down from, 15 seconds, 30
seconds, and 60 seconds.
4. Add options, in options you will be able to change the age
limit, for example:
Under 60, under 50, under 35 and so on.
Comments are welcome, if you see something that I should add to my todo list please say so!

News via http://www.pspgen.com/hack-bin-loade...te-193026.html
If you're one of the new members of the community underground, do not worry we will resume here the main points of why exploits.
Since the arrival of new motherboards with waterproof kit SDC / XGen pandora, the only way to hack the laptop from Sony is ... using a fault. This is not new and every system has flaws. Today, the goal of PSP developers is to find one that will run unsigned code (as chickHEN of Davee) to patch the installed RAM and a subsequent custom firmware not permanent.
So the arrival of the PSP Go (and 6.20firmware) which opened hunting faults and unfortunately many dissemination fakes. However some info we challenge and we now have high hopes for the PSP hack inflashables (PSP2000 TA088v3, PSP3000 and PSP Go!, Especially in a higher firmware to 5.03 prevent the use of chickHEN).
Some time ago, a developer named Flyer said he found a flaw savedata in a game set name was not revealed to avoid seeing this flaw mouthful Flyer embarked on writing a bin loader!
little evidence of the fault
With the support and monitoring of several serious and experienced developers of the PSP scene as Wololo and n00b81 Flyer that has pursued his project and has set up a bin loader (e-loader) for this fault backup. What does this mean? It is possible to load bin files as if Sony had signed.
Could this be the beginning of a new hack? Probably yes, but as you know, once the game title and announced the exploit release, Sony would need 48 hours to fill all this. Besides it should also be a flaw Kernel in order to launch homebrew and iso.
But for now, seems determined Flyer has his job releaser. When? we do not know but you will be aware of this progress when we have something new.
However, an alternative to this seems to exist, actually Flyer said it had discovered another flaw backup but this time in a freely distributable demo. This would be less trouble for the release as a demo is available for everyone. Yet to be seen whether the bin loader could be made "compatible" with this new vulnerability.
Again Wait and See, but the path to a new hack seems to draw slowly. Avoid then update your firmware (especially if a new official firmware appeared).

News via http://www.aep-emu.de/
YAUPSPE (Yet Another (Un)Usable PSP Emulator) is a new PSP Emulator for Windows and Linux, based on Potemkin.
Quote:
SVN snapshots for r38
I´ve made snapshots for r38 of the SVN trunk.
What´s new? Well, some interpreting bugs were fixed, as well as the display, and other little bugs, so now PSPSDK samples work quite fine (but there´s still problem writing numerical values), and GU is not fixed yet, so graphical games don´t work at all.
You can find all the needed files at http://code.google.com/p/yaupspe/downloads/list
Tell me if it doesn´t work for samples like controller or power!
r38
Fixed for win32
r37
Added memory fix in case the address is not a 2 multiple for mem_write16 or 4 for mem_write32 Fixed screen (now there´s no more strange colors at some places on the screen) Fixed another time chdir & directories starting with / (now it should work as expected in all the cases)
r36
Added some syscalls Fixed display (now all the screen shows, and the text doesn´t overwrite) Fixed VADDR & IADDR in GE (but GE still doesn´t work) Added sceIoMkdir Fixed jumping after _sceKernelReturnFromThread (the "PC compensation" seemed wrong); not fatal but removes strange memory errors
r35
Finished cleaning HLE: (fixes issue - removed syscall numbers (useless in most of cases) - re-organized by library - added the possibility to see when an unknown NID was called Started implementing sceMp3 Finished fixing I/O (write, seek, and chdir) (fixes issue 13) Fixed awful things in DirFileSystem Fixed path without drive name (starting directly with /) for ms0: (the path without drive was working, but it broke ms0
r34
Fixed some instructions : makes the power and controller samples work mostly The emulator can now quit normally (pressing escape or closing the window) during a GU interpretation
r33
Switching GPLv3 to GPLv2 (Potemkin uses GPLv2, and I prefer it
r32
Changed project name from pspemu to Yaupspe
r31
Fixes in interpreter: - divided Mftv VFPU function into mfv and mtv (the other will follow) - removed useless emuhack - added break (called when dividing by 0 by the program) - fixed some branch instructions - cleared some parts - added some non-implemented instructions/tables in the tables - removed Emu and Cop2Rese tables Fixed ms0 reading Fixed strange things in sceIoLseek Fixed wakeups Cleared __KernelLoadELFFromPtr Added sceCtrlPeekBufferPositive (but just a copy of sceCtrlReadBufferPositiv
r30
Added syscalls Added unrecognized stubs test Cleaned display Fixes in GE Re-organized host The emulator can now quit in a GE interpretation (useful for the infinite loops)
r29
Fixed mult instruction (makes now text write correctly Some fixes in controller
r28
Fixed threading for jr (last method was wrong) Fixed removing a thread Fixed memory map problems (that caused most PSP SDK samples to crash before main function) Fixed drawing (there was a strange mess with pspframebuf defined everywhere...; now some letters draw in some PSP SDK samples) Now draw display at a timed rate (~30FPS) Various adds in HLE
r27
Better thread & memory errors debugging Simplified the DSP Interpreter code
r26
Much work on GE Made mult instruction work again using the non-C89 method (to be fixed) Fixed mounting PBP´s directory
r25
Finally fixed all tabs for real
r24
Fixed more HLE functions in callbacks, memory (partially, missing alloc), IO (missed one in last commit)
r23
Finished fixing Semaphore, Thread and partially IO (missing things in metafs)
r22
Added debug for memory errors (writes the last instruction) Fixed all semaphore functions Finally fixed all the tabs
r21
Fixed Makefile — missing -lncurses
r20
Woops, added log.c
r19
Added Mingw32 Makefile
r18
Fixed compilation in -pedantic Fixed for Windows Reorganized logging — now -d (ncurses debugger) and -lLVL (debug level) works perfectly, with or without -DNCURSES Fixed tab => 4 spaces and spaces after commas (mostly for logging) Updated --help Added a few HLE functions Maybe some other minor changes
r17
Fixed portability for win32 (tested with mingw32 and wine) Fixed leaks Various clean up Added lv.s VFPU instruction Fixed jumping to too big addresses
r16
* NID Checker added * Fixed splitpath * Added missing sceImpose files * Updated README
r15
Added some instructions debugging Added pref instruction (the ´hit in wipeout´) (but not implemented) Added a lot of HLE functions & NID
r14
Some fixes in I/O, rendering, some syscalls added, added ´p´ key in ncurses debugger to run the program (SLOW), and various other fixes
r13
Fixes in threads, display lists & other syscalls handling
r12
Added missing files (note: to build the debugger, add -DNCURSES in the CFLAGS, in Makefile)
r11
Added ncurses debugger Added .lib.stub reading (fixes issue 6) Better NID/syscall handling
r10
Fixed ISO file loader
r9
Fixes in HLE & interpreter - it nearly runs tests now
r8
Fix delay slot
r7
Cleaning up; more work to make it work
r6
Various cleaning up a bit everywhere + fixed for Visual C++ ?
r5
cleanup, adding elf relocation
r4
cleanup
r3
cleanup: functions removed, no warning with -Wextra, etc. (see diff)
r2
initial commit
r1
Initial directory structure.

"Do you think that there is a future version of Resistance, Resistance 3, being developed?" Without a doubt, this is one of the strangest questions in a recent survey sent by PlayStation to its fans. Since the appearance of a mysterious billboard advertising a sequel to Insomniac Games' FPS franchise in October, fans have questioned not if -- but when -- Resistance 3 would be officially announced.
The follow-up question is meant to gauge interest in a possible third game (also mentioned in an artist resume), a puzzling proposition considering a sequel seems guaranteed. Insomniac's track record with holiday releases on PS3 has been nearly impeccable -- alternating between Resistance and Ratchet and Clank games like clockwork. Should Resistance 3 continue this pattern, we wouldn't be surprised if the game were announced some time soon, to launch on PS3 by the holiday. Unfortunately, this survey offers no conclusive evidence of whether or not that will be true.
