Activision began the new year by removing several Marvel-licensed games from digital storefronts, including the six-months-young Deadpool. The departed Marvel assortment includes Spider-Man games Edge of Time, Shattered Dimensions, Friend or Foe, and Web of Shadows, as well as X-Men entries Destiny, Origins: Wolverine, and The Official Game.
It's unclear what prompted the removal from Steam, Xbox Live and PSN, although it was in the works back on December 21, when it was noted on the Facebook page for The Amazing Spider-Man game. Curiously, The Amazing Spider-Man remains on the storefronts, and Activision is still publishing the follow-up tie-in for The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Activision Community Manager Dan Amrich confirmed the removal yesterday, but he didn't provide a reason for the superhero games going up, up, and away. We've reached out to the publisher for more details.
The expiration of a licensing agreement between Activision and Disney-owned Marvel is one possible explanation. Upon acquiring the comic book giant for $4 billion, Disney CEO Bob Iger noted his company was considering moving towards self-produced and published games in the coming years.
"As these licensing deals expire we have the luxury of considering what is best for the company and the products," Iger said during a 2009 investors' call (via MCV).
When Disney closed LucasArts last year, it then turned to EA with a multi-year exclusive agreement to license out Star Wars games.

A group of dedicated fans have created an English language patch for the Japan-only PSP tactical RPG Valkyria Chronicles 3.While the game was well-received in its native Japan, series publisher Sega refused to bring it to the west following disappointing sales of Valkyria Chronicles 2 and the general unpopularity of the PSP.It's worth noting that the fan-made patch only works with the Valkyria Chronicles 3: Extra Edition (or VC3:E2 for short) for both the PSP and Vita. If used with the game's original release, the patch will still work somewhat, but there will be errors like voices getting switched around. For further details on how to get the English-language patch installed, head on over to the Valkyria Chronicles 3 Translation Project's official site.

Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive creator Tomonobu Itagaki has noted that his upcoming third-person shooter The Devil's Third is still slated to come out later this year, despite its troubled development."Next year will be the year we'll be releasing the console game, Devil's Third," Itagaki said in an interview with Japanese publication 4Gamer (translated via Siliconera). "At the moment, it is about 80 per cent complete, and we can about see the end of it. However, there's still a little more polishing that needs to be done. That's also one of the reasons I've decided to work independently.""For you fans out there, I'd like to apologise for making you worry," he added. "We'll be going all out next year, so please look forward to it."The Devil's Third was first announced in 2009, but in July 2012 its then publisher THQ dropped the title from its line-up before going out of business itself the following year. Furthermore, the middleware team supplying the game's engine went out of business, causing developer Valhalla Studios to switch engines. As of last summer, the game's budget was nearing the £2.5 million mark.Last we checked, Combat Arms developer Doobic Game Studios had joined Valhalla in a joint venture to bring the game to PC and tablets in addition to the Xbox 360 and PS3.

A newly published Sony patent reveals that the company has considered the possibility of introducing methods to add new content to classic games streamed via the cloud.
Filed last year and published this week (via NeoGAF), the patent in question is entitled 'Suspending State of Cloud-Based Legacy Applications'. It reads:
"Among other things, this application describes a method and apparatus for emulating a video game that includes generating snapshots that can be used for incorporating new content into the emulated video games."
Sony says that offering new ways to play pre-existing games can increase the longevity of said titles.
"Instead of replaying the same level or completing the same missions repeatedly, gamers often desire new challenges when replaying legacy games. In response to this need, game designers have begun to produce mini-games.
"Within a mini-game, the gamer can be instructed to complete new objectives or challenge their friends for high scores in a format that was not originally designed into the legacy game.
"Further, since the mini-game is derived from a legacy game, the gamer already knows the characters and basic components of the game, and is therefore more likely to play the mini-game."
The patent goes on to describe how developers would go about adding new content to their games:
A section [0017] In order to create mini-games without reverse engineering and recoding a game designer may rely on the use of triggers and snapshots to provide information needed for the mini-games without having to dig into the code of the legacy game. Triggers are further described in commonly assigned co-pending application Ser. No. 61/666,628 (Attorney Docket Number SCEA12004US00) filed the same day as the present application and entitled "DETERMINING TRIGGERS FOR CLOUD-BASED EMULATED GAMES".
The mini-games may be made by providing an emulator with game inputs that bring the emulated game to a certain point where the mini-game will begin. A snapshot may be generated according to aspects of the present disclosure and that point may be used as the used as the starting point in the future mini-game. Thereafter, triggers may be generated in order to provide new experiences for the game. Game designers may then develop a script and combine it with the snapshot and triggers to produce the mini-game. Therefore, in order to design mini-games in this manner, there is a need in the art for a method of quickly generating snapshots. Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed that cloud gaming network Gaikai will launch in North America this year, ahead of an expected European release in 2015. A number of PS3 games will be available to play on PS4 via Gaikai.

Worldwide PS4 sales will reach 37.7 million units by the end of 2016, Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has forecast.
During the same period, Pachter expects Xbox One sales to total 29 million units.
The analyst said in a research note sent to investors on Thursday: "We expect Sony's and Microsoft's new consoles to thrive over the next three years, with cumulative worldwide sales of 37.7 million PS4 and 29 million Xbox One consoles by year-end 2016. We do not expect Nintendo's Wii U to fare as well, with cumulative sales of under 20 million by 2016."
In November, IHS head of games research Piers Harding-Rolls forecast that PS4 sales will comfortably outpace Xbox One sales over the next four years. The analyst anticipates 49 million PS4 sales by the end of 2017, compared to 38 million Xbox One sales.
Harding-Rolls said: "IHS believes that Sony's wider geographical brand allegiance - especially across continental Europe and Japan - will be decisive in allowing PS4 to outsell Xbox One on a global basis by the end of 2017."
PS4 launched on November 15, 2013 and Xbox One on November 22. Sony reported 2.1 million PS4 sales on December 3, while Microsoft reported two million Xbox One sales on December 11.
Having launched in November 2012, global Wii U sales totalled 3.91 million units as of September 30, 2013.

The first TV spot for PS4 has gone live in Japan.
The short, which can be seen below, somewhat cruelly includes highlights from the console’s many overseas launches.
Sony unusually chose to roll out its machine in Europe and America before launching it in its homeland. PS4 won’t arrive in Japan until February 22nd.
Xbox One, meanwhile, is yet to receive a Japanese launch date.

This DualShock 3 comes as part of Vita TV bundles. DualShock 4 support is promised in a future update.
Sony’s much-hyped home console may not reach Japan until February, but while the western world went mad for PS4 in November, the nation did get its own device – one tailored to the market. In its first week, PS Vita TV came third in the hardware charts behind 3DS XL and Vita, selling 42,172 units. The budget microconsole allows players to play their new copy of God Eater 2 – out the same week and even bundled with Vita TV at many stores – on their TV with upscaled 1080p visuals.Japan is no longer a home console market. 3DS consistently tops the hardware sales charts, and even Vita has been picking up since its price drop in February, thanks in part to a growing library of Monster Hunter clones and RPGs that appeal to local gamers. Vita TV, then, is a happy compromise, priced at a low ¥9,954 (£60), or ¥14,994 (£90) with a DualShock 3 controller and 8GB memory card. It suits a nation full of busy players who want to transfer their Vita games to the big screen after the commute home. There are limitations. With no touchscreen, touchpad, camera or gyros, Vita TV is incompatible with several high-profile Vita titles. Games such as Gravity Rush, Killzone: Mercenary and Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f simply do not launch, though Killzone will be patched in 2014. Still, plenty of big-name games are compatible with Vita TV, such as the forthcoming Final Fantasy X and X-2 HD remakes, along with over 100 other Vita games and an archive of PSP, PS1 and PC Engine games. The device also taps into services such as Niconico, Music Unlimited and Reader.

A recently delayedBattlefield 4 double XP event for Premium members has been rescheduled. Originally supposed to take place on December 30, the new date for the event is ... today. It began at 8am ET this morning and will run for a total of 58 hours. If you've had your eyes on a particular unlock, now would be the time to log on. Here's hoping you can stay logged on.
In other Battlefield news, the "Mantle" update for AMD-powered PCs has been delayed. It was meant to launch in December, but AnandTech reports that Electronic Arts and AMD now plan to release the update in January. Mantle is expected to offer a hefty performance boost for machines packing AMD hardware.

Being born into royalty is a great thing if you're on top, or at least next in line for the throne - everyone else is just stuck waiting to even touch a crown for years. According to a Famitsu interview with Tales of Zestiria Producer Hideo Baba, as translated by Siliconera, protagonist Alicia holds the lowest-ranking seat among her family. That's alright though, as Alicia seems much more interested in filling the role of a knight than waiting around to rule.
She's described as being a bit on the serious side, which will offset the more upbeat, optimistic attitude of her traveling partner, Slay. Baba also said thatZestiria's combat will use "an evolved form of the current linear-motion battle system."
As we learned from Zestiria's debut trailer, a series-first focus on dragons will be present, but it's still unknown to what extent that theme will be covered.

If you're a Drakengard fan interested in the completely hypothetical "Drakengard 4" reaching the PlayStation 4, you should know that Drakengard 3Director Yoko Taro shares the sentiment!
Unfortunately, wanting something doesn't generate mounds of cash, and Taro'sresponse to a fan on Twitter explained that while he hopes to make such a PS4 title, he "can't have enough money for development."
Initial calls for Taro to take the project to Kickstarter were reasonably met with Taro noting that Drakengard is a Square Enix IP. Perhaps Taro's funding budget will be re-evaluated if enough fan interest is generated when Drakengard 3spreads its wings over Western territories in 2014.

Indie game Don't Starve for PS4 and Ninja Theory's reboot DMC: Devil May Cry for PS3 will be free to US PlayStation Plus Subscribers from Tuesday, January 7.
Sony has confirmed these will be the latest two titles added to the US Instant Game Collection in this week's PlayStation Store update.
Don't Starve drops players into a random-generated world with the burden of surviving for as long as possible. Players must balance their health, hunger and sanity as they traverse the fancifully designed playscapes. When sanity drops, players will hallucinate enemy creatures which can ultimately harm the them.
It will become the third PS4 game offered free to PS Plus subs following Resogun and Contrast.
3D action brawler DMC represented a refresh for the classic PS2 series, controversially reinventing Dante as a younger-looking hero.
Sony has confirmed that Galaga Legions (PS3) will leave the US Instant Game Collection on January 14.

Microsoft Studios corporate vice president Phil Spencer has praised Sony's PS4 strategy in a new interview with OXM.
Asked what he's learnt from his rivals, the Xbox executive said Sony has "done a nice job with PS4". While Xbox One's launch campaign was initially bungled, Spencer pointed to Sony's clear PS4 messaging from the console's reveal last February through to its launch in November.
"When I think about their announcement, their clear focus on a customer, leading with the value proposition of what they're trying to do, staying true to a vision, I think they've done a nice job in how they defined the PS4," he said.
Spencer also praised Sony's long-term commitment to new intellectual properties. "I really respect their focus on investing in new things and creative things, what they've done with David Cage and Quantic Dream around Beyond [Two Souls] and Heavy Rain; they stay committed to franchises even if they don't sell 10 million units, they'll stay committed to things.
"I think that long-term commitment to franchises is important, where it's easy to pull off the Band-Aid and move onto the next thing [if it doesn't sell]. I respect their 'stick-to-it-iveness'."
Spencer also had kind words for Nintendo, bigging up the company's catalogue of first party properties.
"Nintendo, I think - and there's some argument about this - that their first-party is such an amazing asset," he said. "Their first party studios and IP can lead what they do as a company and the platforms are almost in service to the IP - not in a bad way."

Colin Sebastian says Sony's latest is persistently out of stock, but Xbox One proving popular at mass market retailers
The sales battle between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 is too early to call, but Baird Equity Research analyst Colin Sebastian gave his impressions of the competition in a note to investors this morning. Sebastian noted that the PS4 clearly improved its position since he made his pre-launch supply chain checks last year.
"[PS4] appears to have a slight momentum edge among core gamers, as demonstrated by premium prices paid on eBay and persistent out-of-stock reports from our retail checks. Nonetheless, Microsoft's Xbox One seems to have fared well among mass market/big box retailers, in part due to its positioning as a living room entertainment hub."
As for when consumers can reasonably assume to find both systems on store shelves without much trouble, Sebastian suggested February or March would mark the beginning of general availability for the Xbox One and PS4, and expects Microsoft and Sony to continue turning out systems at their current production levels with low failure rates.
While hardware sales will continue to be strong in the first quarter of 2014, Sebastian suggested software sales may not fare as well due to a relatively light release schedule. Significant titles like Titanfall, Infamous: Second Son, and Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes are expected by the end of March, but they will have tough comparisons against last year's Q1 slate, which featured new entries in a wealth of popular franchises like BioShock, Metal Gear, Tomb Raider, God of War, and Gears of War.

Crystal Dynamics has detailed the numerous improvements players can expect to see in the upcoming PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, explaining that the new port is "a colossal effort, soaked in visual enhancements and technical optimizations."
The game will run at a native 1080p resolution on the PS4 and Xbox One, and will be bolstered by a "buttery framerate" throughout. The new port is bundled with all of the game's previously released multiplayer DLC, along with the bonus The Tomb of the Lost Adventurer add-on, six alternate outfits, and a collection of digital comic books and documentary featurettes.
Lara herself has also seen an upgrade for the upcoming port, as Crystal Dynamics has implemented a new head and face model for the game's misfortune-prone protagonist, along with subsurface scattering technology that results in more realistic skin glow.
While a handful of games released last year for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 were available at a discounted rate for buyers who wished to upgrade to PS4 and Xbox One versions, Eidos notes that it will not offer a Definitive Editiondiscount for players who purchased a previous version of Tomb Raider on any platform. The company additionally revealed that Definitive Edition's upgrades are exclusive to current-gen consoles; an update for the Windows PC version ofTomb Raider is "not planned."
Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will be priced at $59.99 when it launches in North America on January 28.

Sony announced it's sold 4.2 million PlayStation 4 consoles worldwide as of December 28, 2013. Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House revealed the figure, which is estimated by SCEI, at his company's keynote at the CES trade show. The PS4 data was once again stipulated as "sell-through," meaning it represents units sold to consumers.
It's a dramatic doubling of the figure from December 1, 2013, meaning the company sold another 2.1 million units across the next 27 days of the month. In addition, the company estimates PS4 software sales through retail and digital channels are up to 9.7 million worldwide, while PS Plus subscriptions increased by more than 90 percent between the PS4 launch in North America and the end of the year - it's worth noting the PS4 comes with at least a 30-day Plus subscription in some regions, including the US and Canada.
Just ahead of the PS4's launch in North America, SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton projected 3 million worldwide sales by the end of the year. We now know the console beat that figure by some way, and the company's next aim of5 million sales by the end of March looks a cert, given the PS4 is still to launch in Japan next month - the system is currently available in 53 markets worldwide.
The news comes the day after Microsoft announced Xbox One sales passed the 3 million mark by the close of 2013, across 13 markets worldwide.

Sony President Andrew House has announced PlayStation Now, a new games streaming service that aims to bring older PlayStation games to PS4, PS3, PS Vita and other devices.
PlayStation Now, which will stream games from the original PlayStation, PS2 and PS3 eras first on PS3 and PS4, will kick off on PS3 with a closed beta in the US at the end of January, with a full rollout planned for some time this summer. Users will be able to rent games individually or pay for a PlayStation Now subscription. Sony aims to eventually expand the service beyond Sony devices too.
The foundation for PlayStation Now is Gaikai, the games streaming service Sony purchased for $380 million in 2012. Gaikai is responsible for a variety of PS4 features, including cloud gaming, Remote Play, Try Anything and Instant Broadcast, and other cloud services expected to launch later this year.
Four different PlayStation Now games are currently on-hand at the Sony CESbooth: The Last of Us,Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension andPuppeteer. So far, these are the only supported games Sony has announced.

PlayStation 3 owners can stalk the jungles of the Far Cry universe on February 11 when the set is released at retail for $40.
Joystiq has asked Ubisoft if Far Cry Compilation – as it's officially named – will arrive on other platforms, but has not heard back at the time of publishing.

Sega and The Creative Assembly christened Alien: Isolation, very deliberately. As shown to me last month, the first-person shooter is intrinsically tied to the 1979 film that spawned the Alien franchise. That bond patently includes the look and feel of Ridley Scott's classic, but also a desire to realize its specific brand of horror: You, alone, are up against one Alien, the Alien, and that means you should be very, very afraid.
Revealed almost a year after Aliens: Colonial Marines was released, Isolationmay seem like Sega's response to widespread criticisms of a game that was horrifying for the wrong reasons. However, as UI Art & Design Lead Jon McKellan told me, The Creative Assembly always had survival horror in mind for its pitch to Sega, and the game it's now been developing for just over three years.
"The original film: everyone loves it, we all loved it, we were all really big fans," McKellan said. "It is a survival horror film, that's what's it is. It's just crying out to be a survival horror game, and we couldn't really understand why no-one had done it, [so] we took it with both hands."
The British studio wants to hook into the elements that defined the film: InIsolation, you play as Ellen Ripley's daughter, Amanda, a character previously limited to few mentions in the films. Isolation is set 15 years after the events ofAlien; Amanda, now an engineer for Weyland-Yutani, learns of a flight recording recovered from the Nostromo. Searching for answers to the questions surrounding her mother's disappearance, Amanda heads to where the recording was recovered, a decommissioned trading station called Sevastopol. It's a much larger, city-like setting compared to the Nostromo, but the end result is the same: You're a Ripley, and you're stuck in space with the most lethal killing machine in the universe.

Service to be rolled out to North America consumers this summer, but broadband issues stifle European launch
Sony has unveiled plans to stream PS3 games to consoles, tablets, smartpones and Smart TV's through its new PlayStation Now service.
The new game streaming service will first allow users to stream games from the PS3 library to their PS4, PS3 and later, to the Vita.
US Bravia Smart TVs will also support streaming.
In future, Sony said it hoped to bring PlayStation game streaming to other internet-connected devices, including tablets and smartphones.
PlayStation Now is likened to TV and film streaming services such as Netflix, enabling users to stream games instantly across multiple devices whenever they want.
As games are hosted in the cloud, no updates will be required and saves will also be kept for access on any system.
It is not yet clear what the cost of the service will be, but Sony has said consumers will be able to rent titles, and it will also offer a subscription opening up a number of titles for instant access.
The US beta for PlayStation Now will begin at the end of January. It is expected to be rolled out for the general public in the summer.
A timeframe for the UK or Europe has yet to be announced. Sony noted that the broadband situation in Europe was "considerably more complex" than in North America.
"When it comes to broadband provision, Europe is a considerably more complex region, with a huge number of different providers and varying connection speeds from country to country. In short, we need a little more time to ensure a smooth and successful roll-out," read a statement from the firm.
PlayStation Now will use the technology from cloud gaming firm Gaikai, which Sony acquired in July 2012 for $380 million.

PlayStation 4 has sold 4.2m units worldwide, Sony has revealed.
The figure is up to December 28th, making it the biggest console launch of all time.
Over 9.7m PS4 games have been sold, giving the console a 2.3 attach rate.
In contrast, Xbox One has sold 3m units worldwide. Which is still an impressive figure.
“The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled that gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network ,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
“After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.”
More than 1.7m gameplay broadcasts have been sent from PS4 to Twitch and Ustream.

Popular fantasy series The Witcher is getting its very own board game later this year.Entitled simply The Witcher Adventure Game, this latest project is a collaboration between CD Projekt Red and board game developer Fantasy Flight Games, who previously worked on board game spin-offs of such video game properties as Gears of War and Civilization.Headed by veteran board game designer Ignacy Trzewiczek, The Witcher Adventure Game allows players to take the roles of four characters: series' lead and monster slayer Geralt of Rivia, a bard called Dandelion, a sorceress named Triss Merigold, and dwarven warrior Yarpen Zigrin. Throughout the game players will hunt monsters, earn gold, go on missions, and navigate a web of shaky alliances. The story and the setting of The Witcher really lends itself to an adventure board game. We're looking forward to players being able to craft their own narrative during the course of the game," said Fantasy Flight Games' senior VP of communication and digital business Steve Horvath.

Slender: The Arrival, the official commercial remake of the browser-based horror phenomenon Slender: The Eight Pages, is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 in Q1 2014.Published by Majesco's new indie label, Midnight City, this console version of Slender will contain two new "flashback levels" that unlock after completing the main campaign. Set before the rest of the game, these new stages will "delve deeper into the lives of those Slender Man has touched" as you take of the role of previous Slender Man victims.Worry not, PC users, as this new content will be added as a free update to the PC/Steam version of The Arrival following its console release.EG-contributor Simon Parkin spoke highly of Slender: The Arrival in his review where he noted the remake "masterfully uses these tricks [Slender Man's teleporting] to tap into honest truths: a fear of the dark that lurks somewhere in every person, the terror of being pursued and the horror of being caught."

IGF finalist Don't Starve is available on PlayStation 4 from the PlayStation Store today for £12. Better still, it's free for anyone who subscribes to PlayStation Plus. The Illustrious Pirates pack available for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is the paid release of a pre-order bonus, and beyond that, there's not much out there. You may enjoy the digital bundled release of Rockstar's Bully and GTA: San Andreas games, although both are now a little old.Far Cry 3 has been discounted to £9.99, though, or £8.99 if you subscribe to Plus. The full list is on the European PlayStation blog.

With the servers for Sony's SOCOM games near death, it seems fans of team-based tactical third-person shooters are stuck for something to play.Or are they?Shining a light at the end of the tunnel is H-Hour: World's Elite, the new team-based tactical third-person shooter spearheaded by the creative director of the original SOCOM games, David Sears. This week developer SOF Studios released the first footage of the game, which was successfully crowdfunded through Kickstarter last year, raising $252,000 in the process.Sears was creative director of the SOCOM series on PlayStation 2 while at Zipper Interactive, and he describes H-Hour as the spiritual successor to SOCOM.The footage in the video, below, is captured from an early pre-alpha build of the game. SOF said it's developing a proof of concept demo so it can seek further funding from venture capital or a publisher to build the game. If all goes well, the finished product will release on PC and PlayStation 4 in January 2015.In March 2012 Sony announced it had closed Zipper Interactive after it had completed PS Vita game Unit 13. The last SOCOM game the studio made was SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs for PlayStation 3, which launched in April 2011. The SOCOM franchise has remained dormant ever since.

Gaming headphone giant Turtle Beach has inked a deal with Sony to create official headsets for PlayStation 4.\o/
The official headsets will be unveiled this summer and released this autumn, in tournament-grade editions as well as models for mere mortals. You'll be able to use the same headset to plug into Vita consoles. The partnership means Turtle Beach is in a good position to make full use of PS4 connectivity, which caused a couple of minor legacy headset issues at the turn of the generation. That should mean completely wireless headsets from Turtle Beach on PS4, bypassing the need to plug into the DualShock 4 chat adaptor. Exactly what Turtle Beach has planned, though, we'll have to wait to find out.

VVVVVV creator Terry Cavanagh is bringing his beloved retro platforming adventure to iOS, Android, Vita and Ouya in 2014.Cavanagh calls VVVVVV his 'Final Fantasy.' Now let's hope he doesn't blow all his money on a movie about it.
The indie developer teased the idea of a mobile port in October when he released his Orpheus-themed experiment Don't Look Back on iOS and Android as a sort of "trial run" to see how it would feel on the touch screen. Apparently he was pleased with it, because he decided to pursue that VVVVVV mobile port after all."I've had an incomplete iOS version of the game working for over a year now, but other projects have kept me from finishing it up. I'd really like to get that out soon, though," Cavanagh said on his blog. "Over Christmas I spent a little time finishing up the port, and I'm happy to say that the really hard stuff is done, now. I just need a week or two to sort out the details.""This year, I'm going to release VVVVVV on PS Vita, on iPad, on iPhone, on Android, on Ouya. And, if I can manage it, all at the same time," he added. "This will very likely be the last thing I ever do with VVVVVV, and I wanna go out with a bang!"We were big fans of VVVVVV here at Eurogamer, with both Oli Welsh and I speaking highly of it in our respective PC and 3DS reviews. "VVVVVV provides more moment to moment pleasure in its scant two or three hour campaign than most games do at four times the length," I wrote of the minimalist adventure.

Sony has stated its recommendation of a 5Mbps internet connection for use with its newly-announced PlayStation Now cloud gaming service.
Revealed at CES on Tuesday, PlayStation Now will stream PS3 games initially (other platforms to follow) to PlayStation devices, Sony Bravia TVs and, in future, other Sony and non-Sony devices.
In response to questioning regarding bandwidth, a Sony has said it recommends users have a 5Mbps connection.
"In our internal tests, users with this bandwidth or greater have been enjoying a low latency, high-quality gaming experience," said the firm.
"PS Now tests your connection of each game and optimizes for quality if you are above the minimum requirements," it added, as we revealed in our PlayStation Now hands-on preview.
"We strive to make the gameplay experience feel as if the game is being played locally on their device - fast and responsive (including for FPS and games with twitch mechanics)," Sony went on.
"The Closed Beta will definitely provide a great opportunity to test the experience with gamers with varying connection speeds and our developers will, of course, be working diligently to optimize the service based upon the feedback we receive from the community."
The closed beta is scheduled to begin later this month. Sony has said nothing of beta applications or the scale of the test.
CVG has published an interview with SCEA's marketing VP John Koller, who discussed extensively the company's plans for PlayStation Now, how it all works, and how it will expand PlayStation gaming well beyond the confines of the physical console.

Konami has confirmed that this year's PES game will be released for PS4, marking the series' debut on new-gen hardware.
While EA wasted no time bringing FIFA to the new machines from Sony and Microsoft - with FIFA 14 out at launch on both - Konami's most recent footy sim PES 2014 was confined to last-gen consoles only.
But speaking via its official Twitter feed on Wednesday, Konami said, "PES 2014 will not be released on next-gen consoles but you can expect to see PES 2015 on your PS4."
While the game is expected to be a multi-platform title, the firm was oddly unwilling to confirm an Xbox One version. "We dont really have any information about it at the moment, but well keep you informed," it responded to questioning over an Xbox One release.
There hasn't been a PlayStation-exclusive PES game since 2003's Pro Evolution Soccer 3 on PS2.
PES games are typically released in September. No further official info was offered.

Sony is preparing to launch a live TV and on-demand streaming network for PS4 as the electronics giant vies to compete with the Xbox One's media capabilities.
The cloud based service, which has not yet been named, will allow users to watch live television through their PS4 and purchase a range of films, television shows and possibly additional TV packages.
Sony expects to launch the program across the US in 2014. Other specifics, such as European launch timings and subscription prices, are unknown for now.
At E3 in July, Sony signalled its intent to bring a comprehensive TV service to PlayStation [Image: GameBang]One feature proposed is that users will be able to watch shows and live TV on their PS4 and pick up where they left off on another device. Sony added that it wants the service to eventually support iPads, iPhones and Android devices.
A smart search algorithm is promised along with DVR functionality.
The PlayStation manufacturer has a long-established relationship with film and TV content providers, and runs its own production unit Sony Pictures Television, which has produced shows such as Breaking Bad.
How this on-demand and live TV service will affect Sony's existing relationship with cable TV providers is not clear. Speaking at a press conference in Las Vegas on Tuesday, the corporation's CEO Kaz Hirai insisted that "we are not trying to compete with the cable operators".
"We're trying to resolve one of the biggest hurdles, which is watching live TV and streaming content on different devices," he told a gathering of journalists at CES.
"Everybody's been talking about it, I don't think anyone has been able to do it. We're offering live TV and we're combining it with other video services... We don't set out to do this and say we're going to compete with cable companies."
It is unclear if Sony's current Video Unlimited service will exist alongside the new cloud TV network.
All three key console manufacturers are trying to shake up TV in the living-room with their own content services. Microsoft's Xbox One can read live TV feeds with a HDMI-In cable, while Nintendo is planning a Wii U TVii service.

It's CES time, folks, and that means that Nyko's got a slew of gaming peripherals to show us all. Naturally, next-gen is the order of the day, with the reveal of an Intercooler device that attaches to the rear of your PlayStation 4 to keep it cool. Nyko's also rolling out a PowerPak replacement battery for Sony's DualShock 4controller that doubles up the standard battery pack with a 1,000mAh cell. Additionally, and perhaps puzzlingly, the company is also announcing a Qi wireless charging dock, called the Power Base, built to fit Samsung Galaxy S 4 and Nexus 5 handsets. You can get a glimpse at pictures of all the products in the gallery below, but alas, renders are all we can give you for now -- the real products, prices and arrival dates won't be available until long after CES 2014 is over.
Update: Nyko just relased pricing for all its new gear: the Power Base is $40, Intercooler is $25, and the PowerPak is $20, and all three can be had this spring.

Yesterday, during Kaz Hirai's CES presentation, Sony officially unveiled its plans for PlayStation Now (the new name for its Gaikai-based cloud gaming service). While it's easy to jump to the conclusion that cloud streaming will mean you don't really need a PlayStation console in the future, Sony Computer Entertainment America's marketing VP John Koller told CVG that physical consoles are still very important to Sony.
"It's not necessarily the future of PlayStation, but it is a philosophical change and a reality that we want our gaming experiences to be broadly experienced," he said. "So, when you look at PS3 games - huge catalogue, really strong and diverse lineup of genres and games - we want people to be able to experience those, yes, on PlayStation platforms, but if you own a Bravia [TV] it'd be great if you could pair your DualShock 3 and be able to instantly play."
"PlayStation Now's strong benefit is instantaneous gameplay because that is a problem in this industry. We've got to solve that and I think this does that. We've been working towards that on the download side with Play-as-you-Download [on PS4], and with PS Now we get people instantly playing whether you're on a PlayStation, a Bravia and over time, tablets and smartphones."
He added, "We've been very open and bullish on physical consoles. So I don't think PS Now necessarily disenfranchises future consoles in any way. But it does, I think, show our willingness to try and focus on content as primary. Really, again, focusing on the gamer first - obviously they want great content, great experiences. Those experiences can be had in many different places. So it's more of an open position now."
Koller wouldn't discuss pricing or if PS Now will be tied into PS Plus in some way, but he did confirm that a DualShock controller would be required for anyone attempting to use PS Now on a tablet or smartphone. There won't be any forced touchscreen controls for PS3 titles.
"It needs to go through the DualShock. The DualShock remains the key ingredient," he said. "So that controller experience needs to go perfectly. We didn't want to utilise touch screen or anything like that because the games are best played with a DualShock."
At the beginning of the interview, Koller was also asked about Sony's early sales lead over Xbox One (4.2 million vs. 3 million) and how important it actually is, and the executive responded with a pretty level-headed answer: "It's really not. We look at it really just introspectively. The '4.2 million' number is important because it gets us further towards our goal. And that goal is the largest install base we can possibly get - to encourage publishers and developers to continue to make great game experiences for PS4."
"That's the ultimate goal. You want to make it economically viable, and a great business for the big publishers and developers to say, 'You know what, I wanna be on PS4 either first, exclusively' or whatever it is, utilize the feature set the PS4 has and really encourage that as a business."

Licensed headsets due in 2014 as Turtle Beach pens deals with Sony, Microsoft, Respawn and EA.
Expected to debut in Q3, the PS4 and Vita range will feature “tournament grade” headsets, along with traditional gaming and entertainment orientated devices on the way, too.
“Turtle Beach is excited to work with Sony to create headsets for the PS4,” said Juergen Stark, Chief Executive Officer at Turtle Beach.
“Audio is an important part of the next-generation PlayStation experience, and our emphasis on versatile, multi-platform headsets will ensure consumers have an optimal experience across their PS4 console and Vita devices.”
The headset specialist also unveiled three new products, which allows current PlayStation gamers to make their existing headsets compatible with the PS4.
A PS4 Upgrade kit, which allow connectivity to the PS4’s optical audio port. Meanwhile, the PS4 Talkback Cable allows players to adjust their audio controls directly from the gamepad, while a PS4 Chat Cable will provide chat audio directly from the DualShock controller.
On the other side of the console fence, Turtle Beach has also confirmed it will launch a range of Titanfall-branded headsets for Xbox One, 360 and PC.
The deal with EA and Respawn Entertainment will see Turtle Beach introduce a variety of specifically designed devices to support the launch of Titanfall in March.
As part of the range, Turtle Beach will launch new iterations of its XO Four and XO Seven headsets.
“Turtle Beach is honoured to work with the talented teams at Respawn Entertainment and Electronic Arts to create headsets for fans of Titanfall,” said Bob Picunko Chief Marketing Officer at Turtle Beach.
“We are looking forward to working with Electronic Arts and our retail partners to support one of the biggest next-gen events of the year.”

Take a look at The Last of Us running on Vita through PlayStation Now, the Sony games streaming service that was announced this morning at CES. PlayStation Now will enter beta in January, with a full rollout in the US this summer on PS3, PS4 and Bravia TVs. Vita is scheduled for later on.
PlayStation Now will allow players to stream PlayStation games on a variety of internet-connected devices. According to Sony's launch plan, PlayStation Now will hit PlayStation devices first, then expand to other Sony products, and then hit third-party internet-capable devices. It enables cross-platform gaming, such as PS4 players entering games with PS3 players.
Finally, The Last of Us can make you feel awful, beautiful things from a tinier screen.

Energy Hook will launch on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita this year, before it heads to PC, Mac and Linux in full, creator Jamie Fristrom revealed in a recentPlayStation Blog. The game earned $41,535 on Kickstarter in June 2013 to come to PC.
Energy Hook is a 3D swinging action game in which players get style points for running along walls and performing tricks mid-flight from rooftop to rooftop. Players will also use gravity beams and boots as well as jetpacks (naturally) to amp up the action in the "extreme sports of the future" game.
Fristrom was the technical director and designer of Activision's Spider-Man 2game, and created the game's swinging system. Fristrom left Activision to create Energy Hook, and was turned down when pitching to Sony's Pub Fund before taking to Kickstarter to fund the game. The game's crowdfunding support clearly turned a few heads at Sony, enough to bring the game to PS4 and Vita. Some backers of the project have access to the game's PC beta version through the Humble Store, which received a new build in December, per an update on the Kickstarter page.

Skyrim may be set to join the burgeoning library of cross-gen ports, afterBethesda's site temporarily listed the Elder Scrolls game for PS4 and Xbox One. It's far from an official confirmation, but the perhaps leaky listing certainly puts the Khajiit among the pigeons.
The listing was first spotted by OnlySP, and verified by us - it's since been amended. Bethesda VP of PR and Marketing Pete Hines took to Twitter to say it was an accident: "We have been working on the CMS that runs our sites. A bug caused platforms that don't exist to show up for some games Sorry for confusion."
Talk about an unfortunate bug... We've reached out to Bethesda for comment.

Korean MMORPG/RTS Kingdom Under Fire 2 will launch for the PlayStation 4 this summer after wrapping up an open beta test on PC platforms in the first half of 2014, 2P reports. Developer Blueside additionally revealed that the PlayStation 4 version of the game will feature platform-exclusive content.
The last time we heard from the Kingdom Under Fire series was in 2008, when the action-RPG Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom premiered for the Xbox 360. Circle of Doom followed up on a pair of real-time strategy games released for the original Xbox in the early 2000s; Kingdom Under Fire 2 is the first game in the series to incorporate traditional RTS elements since 2005's Kingdom Under Fire: Heroes.
Kingdom Under Fire 2 shifted platforms a number of times during its multi-year development. Originally announced for the Xbox 360, the game later moved to the PlayStation 3 before settling on a final release on the PC and PS4.

Sony’s streaming game service PlayStation Now might not necessarily be the warning claxon for retail that some are predicting.
Retail already does big business selling digital content, with High Street stores in particular profiting from those customers who lack access to debit and credit cards.
One retailer beating the drum about the opportunity afforded by Sony’s new platform is GameStop which, like GAME in the UK, has already done a good job of claiming a slice of PSN’s existing revenue.
"GameStop has built a $600m digital business, with most of the digital games sold through our stores,” a rep toldGameSpot.
“Similar to how we worked closely with our partner Sony to successfully sell the PlayStation Plus service, we are looking forward to working with them on including the new PlayStation Now service as part of our portfolio of gaming products we offer our customers.”
The retailer’s keenness to fight its corner comes as little surprise – stock in the company fell in the hours following the PlayStation Now announcement, suggesting that the markets don’t share in the belief that digital growth can benefit traditional channels.
Sony has confirmed that PlayStation owners will have the choice between renting individual titles or instead subscribing to the streaming service, neither of which implicitly exclude High Street retail from the equation.

3D swinging and movement game Energy Hook is a timed PlayStation exclusive, developer Happion Laboratories has announced. It launches on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita soon and before on PC and Xbox One, Happion founder and creator of the swinging mechanic in Spider-Man 2 Jamie Fristrom revealed on the PlayStation blog. It's a somewhat surprising move because Happion was one of the developers on the list of studios approved for Microsoft's Xbox One self-publishing program, ID@Xbox.Fristrom told Eurogamer the PlayStation deal came about after a brief Twitter exchange with Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's Shahid Kamal Ahmad. Ahmad had asked developers what it would take for them to port to Vita before other platform. Fristrom's response was for Sony to cover the cost of licensing the Unity game development engine and front up a $20,000 "incentive"."I can make something like that happen for you Jamie, like before," Ahmad replied. "Your work is the bomb.""I knew Shahid from making Sixty Second Shooter Deluxe," Fristrom explained to Eurogamer, "and we liked working together, so it was easy to come to an agreement. And then we got SCEA involved and added PS4 into the mix. The contracts took a while to get signed because of the SCEE - SCEA crossover, but I've been through worse."

January 10th, 2014, 23:23 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Online Entertainment has detailed numerous developments and changes planned for PlanetSide 2 players in the coming weeks and months.
Creative director Matthew Higby outlined plans to alter development processes to release "smaller and more focused" title updates from now on.
"Over the last few weeks we have been reorganizing our internal build and development processes in order to allow us to expedite builds to live with the goal of updating the live game more often and more regularly," Higby said in a statement.
Higby promises this will allow the studio to "more rapidly respond to bugs & balance issues in the game without having to rely on hotfixes" as much.
"Each individual update will be smaller and more focused, with fewer moving parts that can break, which we hope will greatly decrease the number of bugs being introduced when we update," he added.
Additionally, a change to premium subscriptions for the game will see players offered the ability to select one item worth up to 2000SC each month, instead of the 500SC previously gifted to players monthly.
"The goals of our plan are very simple. Let players buy anything they want up to 2000 SC," explained SOE CEO John Smedley in a recent blog post.
"We wanted to let players get some of the larger items on the marketplace. People complain the other way on this all the time - they complain that the 500SC isn't enough for them to buy enough stuff. So we thought this would be a positive change," he added.

After delaying its pilgrimage to North American PS3s and Vitas, the cast of Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will set out to stop Sin again on March 18. The visually-upgraded, content-rich telling of Yuna's story has kept fans waiting for a while, and it looks like outsourcing contractor Virtuos is to thank for wrapping up the project.
Virtuos, a multi-location effort with its main production center in Shanghai, credited itself as being responsible for the remaster of Square Enix's double feature. The studio describes itself as a resource for console, online and mobile games, with the PSP version of Ghost Recon: Predator and Crash: Mind over Mutant among its past efforts.
Of course, expectations for FFX/X-2 HD are likely higher than expectations of previous Virtuos console games. Hopefully its collaboration with Square Enix results in a satisfying return to one of the PS2's most iconic RPGs and its encore.

PCSX2 is a PlayStation 2 emulator for Windows and Linux. Project attempts to allow PS2 code to be executed on your computer, thus meaning you can put a PS2 DVD or CD into your computers drive, and boot it up!
Here's the changelog from 5 latest SVN builds:
|
+ Dev9ghzdrk: Take the first 3 bytes of the host MAC for the virtual one, should make it unique for people using xlink or multiple people playing the same game.
Hopefully this works anyway
+ GSDX: Nonsense workaround for VS2010 crash issue. We suspect that memory is getting corrupted but we've failed to find the code responsible. Many different changes result in code that doesn't crash for no obvious reason, this one at least looks vaguely like sane code though.
+ Reverted optimisation flag for VS2010 release target.
+ GSDX: (FXAA) Treat shader model 4.1 as 4.0 and future shader models as 5 rather than failing to compile.
+ GSDX: As the Optimization option in VS2010 causes GSDX to crash now, i've disabled it. Whole program optimization is still on and the release will use both (compiled with vs2013). So the SVN can like it or lump it ;p
+ GSDX: Modified the FXAA shader loading so Page Up works again. Now loads the shader just in time.
+ i18n:

Capcom discusses its new Panta Rhei game engine and the complexities of making titles on new consoles
Developing games for the PS4 and Xbox One requires ten times more work than creating titles for the last generation of consoles, a senior Capcom developer has claimed.
Senior manager of technology management Masaru Ijuin said the new generation of consoles required the Resident Evil publisher to develop its new Panta Rhei engine to power its future titles and to cope with "increasingly complex hardware".
He added that Capcom considered upgrading its existing MT Framework, but wanted to further reduce iteration time. He claimed that the new game engine delivered a tenfold increase in the amount of work its developers can do, reducing iteration time from ten minutes to one minute.
The Panta Rhei engine will not be used for any titles on PS3 and XBox 360, while the MT Framework will also continue to be used on mobile projects.
"At Capcom we have been using our original development engine, which is called 'MT Framework', to make games and improve the efficiency and quality of development," said Ijuin.
"However, we have run into some problems and limitations while using this framework. Looking ahead to the development of games for next-gen consoles, we felt we needed to completely overhaul the development environment to better cope with the increasingly complex hardware. That's pretty much why we started developing this new engine.
"Don't get me wrong. We believe 'MT Framework' is a powerful rendering engine. But it's clear that heightened game quality leads to a rise in the number of man hours. The amount of work involved in making games for next-gen consoles is eight to ten times greater than what is required for the current generation of consoles."
Ijuin also said that the architecture behind the PS4 and Xbox One had drastically redefined the way games are rendered, and conventional theories for developing titles would no longer work.
"If we create games the same way as before, we won't be able to give our fans what they want, and that's games unlike any they have ever played," he said.
"We think we should view this new hardware as an opportunity to tackle new challenges."
The first title to use the Panta Rhei game engine will be the upcoming free-to-play fantasy RPG Deep Down.

Looking to interface your Arduino with the PS4 controller? [Kristian] has updated his USB host library with support for the controller. The library makes it easy to read most of the inputs from the controller. Currently the buttons and joysticks work, and support for the light sensor, rumble, and touchpad is on the way.
To get this working, you will need the USB Host Shield for the Arduino and a Bluetooth dongle. Once you have the hardware setup, you can use the library to pair with the controller. When connected, simple function calls will let you read the state of the device.
While this does require some additional hardware to connect, all of the code is open source. If you’re looking to experiment with the PS4 controller yourself, [Kristian]‘s work could be a helpful starting point. Of course, all of the source is available on Github, and theexample sketch shows how easy it is to roll the PS4 controller into your own Arduino project.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is more than halfway done, with roughly 85 percent of the artwork completed and "almost all" of the game's original Flash art reworked in the new engine, creator Edmund McMillen writes in anexpansive FAQ. Rebirth is the console, non-Flash remake of McMillen's gloomy roguelike, The Binding of Isaac, in development for Steam, PS4 and Vita. As for other platforms, McMillen says:
"The rest aren't out of the question. We would love to release on all systems; the ball is in their courts though. We miiiiight also test the game out on iPad and see how it works – if it works ok then we will also release there." McMillen would love to see Rebith on Nintendo 3DS, but that's not possible right now, he says.
"We want to release on 3DS, and will if given the option," McMillen writes. "Isaac currently goes against Nintendo's publishing rules due to its religious aspects. But stuff might change, you never know." He mentioned the religion issue regarding Nintendo in February 2012, but still called out 3DS and Wii U in November 2012 as platform goals.
Rebirth features local co-op and the ability for players to stream runs against other people online, plus the option to share your final, end-game Isaac avatar online. It also supports controllers and will have at least three new playable characters, new endings and chapters, and more than 150 new items, pushing the total item count past 300.
For clarity's sake, the header image is not an in-game screen of Rebirth's new art of anything. It's a Monstro figurine from The Binding of Isaac, hand-made by McMillen's mother-in-law and eventually available to purchase here.

The PS4 version of Outlast, the insane asylum horror game from indie developer Red Barrels, will be free in February for PS Plus members. Red Barrels announced the freebie on Facebook, ahead of the official PS Plus February rundown.
Outlast hit PC in September and we found it to be a "perfect nightmare." The story has players take on the role of an investigative journalist – complete with night-vision camera – following a hot tip that Mount Massive Asylum is filled with horrific government secrets and all manner of violent inhumanity. Spoilers: It totally is.

14 PS3 games and 14 Vita games will go on sale via the PlayStation Network starting tomorrow, January 14, 2014. And each one will be discounted to just 14 cents!
Okay, we made that last bit up, but it just shows SCE America wasn't prepared to commit 114 percent to its numerical symmetry. Shame on it.
What it is committing to, though, is a bunch of top discounts, especially for Plus members. Picks of the bunch include JRPG Tales of Xillia, slashed down to $20 or just $10 on Plus, and whimsy-fest Puppeteer, its strings cut to $14 or a Plus-tastic $7.
The 28 discounts are staying available through to next week, with the sale ending on January 20. For the full list of games, head on past the break.

Springtime will see Marie Rose blossom onto the console versions of Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate, Team Ninja revealed. As reported by Siliconera andShoryuken, her addition will be preceded by a February update, bringing - what else - new costumes to the brawler.
To recap, Dead or Alive 5 Ultimate is the expanded re-release of the 2012 game, adding new stages, characters, modes, and the like. As for Marie Rose, Team Ninja added the Lolita madam to the arcade version of DoA5U back in November, finally filling the game's dearth of scantily-clad ladies.
There's no confirmation these dates apply outside of Japan, but the good news is that DoA5 updates have traditionally been concurrent or thereabouts across the globe.

There could be a time in the future when PlayStation Vita drops physical games altogether.
That’s the admission of Sony’s UK MD Fergal Gara who toldVG247 that the momentum towards digital gaming is certainly apparent.
“Compared to PS3, Vita has had a higher percentage of games bought digitally since it was first launched,” Gara said. “It’s interesting and it demonstrates how many people look at it as the iPod of handheld gaming.
“More Vita games are still consumed through physical game cards than they are through digital, but things are increasingly moving the other way. Could be that in future physical games becomes the side we do without.”
All of which harps back to the ill-fated PSP Go. That unit was a redesigned version of the PSP that dropped the physical UMD drive in favour of a digital-only solution. It was a sales disaster, although of course it arrived at a time when digital gaming was very much in its infancy.
Gara also once again confessed that Vita hasn’t quite lived up to Sony’s expectations.
“In all honesty, higher sales would have been what we had hoped for,” Gara said. “The market Vita entered was more complicated than it was when the console was originally thought about and designed. Games on tablets and phones have changed the marketplace and people can’t carry too many things around at one time.
“The truth is that the number of people that want the core experience [that Vita offers] is not as big as the number that simply want any sort of game available on the move and, because the likes of a tablet and smart phone are so multifunctional in their use, they will always be very appealing.
“Really, I think the reason it hasn’t sold more is that it comes down to people thinking: ‘Do I need it as well as these other things that are taking my money?’”

Fergal Gara notes an increase in the number of Vita titles being bought digitally.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe
eu.playstation.com
In interview with VG247, PlayStation UK Managing Director Fergal Gara said that a digital-only future for the Playstation Vita is not out of the question.
"Compared to PS3, Vita has had a higher percentage of games bought digitally since it was first launched," explained Gara. "It's interesting and it demonstrates how many people look at it as the iPod of handheld gaming. More Vita games are still consumed through physical game cards than they are through digital, but things are increasingly moving the other way. Could be that in future physical games becomes the side we do without."
The rise in multi-purpose tablets and smartphones has been a difficult thorn on the side of the Vita's success, as consumers are finding they don't want a device that's perceived as just playing games. Gara acknowledges that other mobile devices can be a problem for the Vita.
"The truth is that the number of people that want the core experience [that Vita offers] is not as big as the number that simply want any sort of game available on the move and, because the likes of a tablet and smart phone are so multifunctional in their use, they will always be very appealing," sai Gara. "Really, I think the reason it hasn't sold more is that it comes down to people thinking: 'Do I need it as well as these other things that are taking my money?'"
The PlayStation 4's success and the Vita Remote Play feature means the Vita itself could see some additional sales, but Sony is cognizant about making sure the portable doesn't get trampled by PS4 hype.
"It's our job to make the message clear to people so that they understand the Vita is a console in its own right and also a great partner to the PS4."

In the works for over a year, Triple-Tech.org has gathered much of the fractured Chrono modding community’s notes into one in-depth wiki. The site’s goal is to become a thorough reference library for those interested in studying the inner workings of Chrono Trigger (SNES), Chrono Cross (PSX) and Radical Dreamers (SNES - Satellaview).
Triple Tech also offers a forum for in-depth discussions on everything from Chrono Trigger’s BRR samples to Chrono Cross’ model format. As an anti-spam measure, the Triple Tech forum requires registration to view the technical boards. What Triple-Tech *doesn’t* do is host patches — it’s strictly a learning environment focused on top-to-bottom analysis of these games.
Whether you’re a reverent Chrono fan with a technical bent or a budding modder who wants to see an SNES or PSX game dissected to the fullest extent, check it out!

via http://wololo.net/2014/01/12/yifan-l...its-encrypted/
I’ve mentioned a few weeks ago Yifan Lu’s ongoing experiment/attempt at looking at the vita’s hardware. Yifan’s been busy over the Christmas period, looking at the bowels of our favorite portable console. Earlier today he announced he was able to dump the Vita’s NAND.
Now before everyone gets excited for no good reason, all this really gives us today is confirmation that the vita onboard memory is encrypted. This in itself is interesting though, as this confirms Sony didn’t mess up their security on that point, and attempting to hack the Vita by modifying the NAND directly is not a possibility.
Yifan also shared a bunch of cool pictures and explanations on how he achieved the dump, something that I think is extremely valuable for all of us, especially those interested to know how hardware hacking works. As I’ve stated many times now, I believe Vita hacking will not come without massive help from hardware hackers.
Some of Yifan Lu’s interesting findings are that the eMMC NAND is about 3.78GB, with about 800MB used by the (encrypted) system, and the remaining 3GB or so potentially empty for now.
This experiment gave Yifan Lu new cool hardware skills that he’ll use to look at more stuff in the Vita’s internals. He also details the hardware cost of this experiment, something you’ll find interesting if you want to do something similar one day
Oh, and this goes without saying, but yifan Lu will not publicly disclose the dumped material. Not that it would be useful anyway, given that it’s encrypted.
This might sound like a disappointment, but to me, the fact that one guy went from no hardware knowledge to being able to dump the NAND of the Vita in a matter of weeks is extremely exciting. Again, more important than the result is how he achieved it, a process that he details on his blog. I wish I had the time to do the same

The highly anticipated second episode of Telltale's Fables-based series, The Wolf Among Us, will most likely be out the first week of February. That's funny. I don't remember looking like a giant green head.
Telltale president Kevin Bruner noted the expected release week on the studio's forums after fans complained that they'd heard nothing about the upcoming episode since the pilot debuted in early October. Three months between episodes is really quite a lot when one considers that Telltale's previous effort, The Walking Dead, didn't go for more than two months without a new offering."It's been a struggle to get this episode out, for a variety of reasons, but it's finally ready to go," Bruner said. "We are working hard with all of our partners (Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, Apple) to coordinate everything, but we're confident enough to announce that [the release week] here. The episode is looking really good (as is the rest of the season!)."He further clarified that this lengthy absence of episodes was abnormal and won't be a problem for subsequent episodes. "We are very concerned about the long delay for this episode, but this is one of those occasions where several things conspired against us (not to mention the additional delays due to the holidays). I won't dive into the details, but it's been an unusual and specific set of circumstances and we do not anticipate it happening again as we go forward with the rest of the season."Unfortunately Bruner didn't specify exactly which platforms The Wolf Among Us Episode 2 will be hitting that week. A rep from the studio told me the plan is for all platforms, but this is still being sorted. Chances are the PC, Mac and XBLA version will be on time, but The Walking Dead tended to get delayed on Europe's PSN, so there's no telling if that will be the case again.

PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to nab PS4 survival horror Outlast for free in February.Boo.
Outlast developer Red Barrels made the announcement last night via the game's official Facebook page. The current PlayStation Plus content includes DmC Devil May Cry and Borderlands 2 for PlayStation 3, Soul Sacrifice and BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend for PlayStation Vita and acclaimed wilderness survival title Don't Starve for PS4. Not bad.Eurogamer reviewed Outlast when it launched on PC last autumn and found it a little rough round the edges but still well worth exploring."There's little chance to branch off the main path and explore - but that's for the best," Rich McCormick wrote. "Stop and peer too long into Outlast's gloom and you'll see the zips on the monster costumes. Take it at at speed and you'll find a haunted house worth visiting."

- Increased damage by 25% for the Stealth Jet 20mm cannons
- Stealth Jets now have more similar handling attributes to each other. F35 & J-20 are slightly more agile, Su-50 is less agile

Tecmo Koei will challenge Capcom's Monster Hunter series head-on with its new Vita game, Toukiden: The Age of Demons, heading West in February.
The publisher has confirmed a North American release date of February 11, with an EU launch set for Feb. 14
PrevNextWith around half a million copies sold in Japan since its launch there in June 2013, Toukiden is a third-person monster collecting adventure seemingly heavily influenced by Capcom's Monster Hunter series.
The blurb according to the publisher:
"Set against a backdrop inspired by various historical periods of Japan, Toukiden tells the tale of humanity's last stand for survival. When monstrous demons (Oni) of varying strength and size invaded the world through cracks in space and time and started attacking humans, the only opposition came from the Slayers; a caste that has always secretly protected mankind from their murderous intent."
You take on the role of a slayer, working with other players and NPC characters to discover and battle giant monsters, leveling up your weapons and abilities as you go.

HalfBrick Studios' acclaimed twin-stick zombie shooter, Age of Zombies, will release on Vita in US today.
The game had previously hit the PlayStation Store in the form of a PS Mini for PSP, but its Vita release marks the first time the game has released natively to a platform with a physical twin analogue setup.
The Vita update of the 2010 iOS title comes with "remastered" graphics, a bonus 'Wild West' chapter, and a list of Survival Challenges.
The Vita entry also features slightly increased difficulty, a new health bar, global leaderboards and a suite of Trophies.
Developer HalfBrick Studios calls it "the definitive version" of the game.
There was no word of an EU release in the announcement.

Today marks the PlayStation 3 debut of Ubisoft's high-definition retread ofAssassin's Creed: Liberation.
As with its original Vita incarnation, Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD follows the adventures of Aveline de Grandpré, a female assassin operating in New Orleans in the aftermath of the French and Indian War. Like all Assassin's Creed entries, the game focuses on stealth, parkour-esque acrobatics and stabbing jerks in the spine, neck, face and whatever other body parts are within dagger-range. The biggest addition found in this entry is a new costume system that allows Aveline to alter her style of dress to pass unnoticed in certain echelons of 18th century society.
New to this latest release are enhanced, high-definition graphics, improved audio, new missions and the addition of "Aveline's trademark whip," which is useful both in combat and when attempting to swing across gaps too large to jump.
Today's PlayStation 3 release of Assassin's Creed: Liberation HD will be followed by PC and Xbox 360 versions tomorrow.

Niche-focused publisher MonkeyPaw Games has revealed a slate of six classic PSOne games set to launch digitally via the PlayStation Network through January and February.
The studio's Retro Rush campaign will conclude on February 18 with the PSN re-release of Tomba 2: The Evil Swine Return, a cult-favorite platformer originally released in 1999. MonkeyPaw previously oversaw a PSN reissue of the original Tombaback in 2012.
Building up to Tomba 2's return, MonkeyPaw will launch a new PSOne import game weekly, starting with tomorrow's release of Double Dragon. No, it's probably not the Double Dragon that you're thinking of – it's a port of a Neo Geo fighter loosely based on the 1994 film adaptation of Double Dragon, not the original 1987 arcade game.
MonkeyPaw will finish out January with PSN releases for Toshiba EMI's beat-'em-up Lucifer Ring and Human's firefighting sim The Firemen 2: Pete and Danny. February will see the release of Nichibutsu's arcade revamp Hyper Crazy Climber and Data East's horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up Wolf Fangbefore Tomba 2 hits on February 18.

The early success of next-gen consoles appears to have claimed a very high profile victim.
OPM reports that estimates from analysis firm Cowen & Co peg Gran Turismo 6’s sales to date in America at 300,000 units. In the same period, predecessor Gran Turismo 5 sold 1,169,074 copies.
For what it’s worth, the site also reports on figures from VG Chartz that estimate global sales of 2,077,064 for GT6 since launch. In the same period GT5 managed over 5m unit sales.
While all of these numbers are purely estimates, it’s clear that Gran Turismo 6’s release on PS3 AFTER the launch of PS4 has had a significant effect on its success.
All of which makes the possible arrival of Gran Turismo 7 on PS4 this year somewhat more likely, we’d have thought.

In its ongoing quest to support every gaming platform in existence, the Unity engine is now available to developers on Sony's Vita handheld.
According to a blog post on the Unity website, the Vita version of Unity supports all of the handheld's unique features including touchscreen sensitivity, dual analog joysticks, the Vita's front- and rear-facing cameras and its gyroscopic motion sensors. In addition, the engine also supports the features of the PlayStation Network, allowing developers to easily integrate trophies and friends list support into games developed on Unity.
Most crucially, the addition of Unity support to the Vita will make it easier to port games from the handheld to other platforms supported by the engine. Instead of having to rewrite a game's code from scratch, developers can now build a game in Unity and with a few relatively simple tweaks port it to other Unity platforms. In March, an agreement was announced to bring the Unity engine to all Sony gaming machines. This should make development of future cross-play games less resource-intensive.

Pricing the upcoming "Left Behind" chapter at $14.99, the image claims that the DLC will be available on February 14. The pack's Sony Entertainment Network listing has also been updated to reflect the new release date.
Actor Ashley Johnson revealed earlier this week that "Left Behind" will star a younger, more playful version of pandemic survivor Ellie. "Left Behind" is included as part of The Last of Us' Season Pass.

Call of Duty has come a long way since its WW2 days. Michael Myers? Giant spider things? The Onslaught DLC for Ghosts is a bit different from the CoD of seven years back.
Infinity Ward spilled the beans on the game's first DLC this week: Onslaught features four new maps, a new weapon in the form of the Maverick dual-purpose assault-rifle/sniper-rifle, and the first chapter of a four-part Extinction campaign.
The screenshot with the creepy trailer and campfire comes from the Fog map, and if you complete a certain field order in Fog, you get to become Michael Myers. What that means is you don the mask and axe, and other players (with sense) run away from you, all while the Halloween music plays. Sounds neat to us.
Onslaught hasn't got a long way to go before it hits Xbox One and Xbox 360 marketplaces on January 28 - no news yet on an ETA for other platforms.

Headlining the Bundle Fantastico is the game itself, which is cross-play compatible with both the PlayStation 3 and the Vita handheld. Additionally, the collection includes both the Costume Pack and El Diablo's Domain DLC releases. The former offers new outfits for the game's protagonist which alter how the game plays, from granting you infinite stamina to reducing the power of certain attacks. El Diablo's Domain adds 17 new trials to Guacameleedesigned to test the skills of those who have mastered the game's Metroid-meets-lucha libre controls.
Rounding out the Bundle Fantastico are three Guacamelee themes for your PS3, 10 Guacamelee avatars, and a remastered soundtrack including 30 mariachi-inspired tracks from the game as well as four additional remixes.
Drinkbox claims the Guacamelee Bundle Fantastico should appear on the Sony Entertainment Network later today. Once available, the bundle will feature a $20 price tag - making it $5 more expensive than purchasing Guacamelee by itself.

With PlayStation Vita getting Unity game engine support in today's update, one of gaming's most widely used game engines is heading to Sony's latest handheld. And that means it's all the easier for the dozens of great Unity engine games to head to the Vita as well, to say nothing of future developments. It also means that, when games are ported, they'll have access to the full suite of PlayStation Network features (matchmaking, trophies, etc.); previously, many developers took the PS Mobile publishing route, leaving out rich features many other Vita games enjoyed.
As content is the lifeblood of any game console, we're thrilled to see what today's update means for 2014 with PlayStation Vita. Unity's also promising PlayStation 4 support in the near future, which hopefully means that applicable Unity engine games will also have crossbuy support. We can dream, can't we?

Ubisoft announced plans to publish a new game in the Tetris series for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 today. While no details were given for the new game, the announcement makes mention that it will land on both platforms' digital channels, Xbox Live and PSN.
It's hard to imagine what would make for a truly "next-generation" experience in the storied series, which turns 30 this year. Of the more innovative features the block-based puzzler has seen over the years are online competitive multiplayer modes as well as spins on the traditional Tetris formula in the form of puzzles, the "stack rotation" catch mode found in Tetris DS and the three-dimensional take on the puzzler in Tetrisphere for N64. Given what's hot in video games right now, we're hoping the next-gen Tetris game takes place in a procedurally-generated universe with roguelike treasure-collecting elements and emergent storytelling.

Driveclub is no longer part of the PS4 launch line-up in Japan, meaning it's been unpinned from a February 22 release date over there. It's perhaps not the most surprising news, given the racer's western window is still a vague "early 2014." According to Siliconera and GAME Watch, its new scheduling in the country is to be determined.
It's not the first last-minute delay for Driveclub; the Evolution Studios sim was a PS4 launch title in the West before stalling a month ahead of the checkered flag. Back then, Sony Worldwide Studios chief Shuhei Yoshida said, "We understand that the delay is disappointing news, but can assure you that the reason we have made this decision is to ensure that when Driveclub launches, it will realize the next-gen racing vision."
There's not been much word on the game since, and today's news doesn't shed light on things beyond making a western launch next month look unlikelier. Whenever it arrives, Driveclub is coming as a full, paid-for game and as a free download for PS Plus members, the latter "missing a few assets, such as cars and tracks" according to Evolution Studios.

Aksys Games launched the first of the Genroku Legends DLC for Muramasa Rebirth this week on PSN, and on January 22 in Europe. Announced inNovember 2013, the Fishy Tales of the Nekomata downloadable episode puts players in control of a girl named Okoi, who is possessed by Miike, a nekomata. Okoi avenges the death of her brother using her cat-like claws and demon powers to summon "hordes of cat allies" to battle alongside her. Basically, it's cat DLC.
Fishy Tales of the Nekomata is the first of four Genroku Legends episodes coming this year to Muramasa Rebirth, each starring a different character. This week's episode has two endings and a slew of new bosses for players to paw at. Muramasa Rebirth launched in June 2013 as a PS Vita port of the original Vanillaware-developed Wii game, Muramasa: The Demon Blade. The Fishy Tales of the Nekomata DLC is priced at $4.99 on PSN.

Last year, Square Enix said it was "very disappointed" that the high review scores for Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider reboot had not translated into the equally high sales it had expected for the game - a whopping 5-6 million units within four weeks.Tomb Raider actually sold around 3.4m during its first month on shop shelves - no small amount. But by Square Enix's standards it was nowhere near enough. The lost sales came at a turbulent time for Square Enix - after its "extraordinary loss" at the end of the last financial year and before its "fundamental review" of the entire company. And it was easy to suggest that Square Enix had predicted Tomb Raider would sell more because it (and Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs) simply needed to in order that they fix the company's financial problems. But from comments made to Eurogamer last night by Tomb Raider executive producer Scot Amos, it wasn't until much later in the year that the game broke even."By the end of last year - Tomb Raider is in the black," Amos revealed. "We've crossed the line of profitability for the last-gen and PC versions."Tomb Raider's upcoming Definitive Edition will help push the game's sales further.
It tallies with something Eurogamer sister site Games Industry discussed last year - that a game like Tomb Raider with a budget approaching $100m (£60m) needs to sell an extraordinary amount to break even - at least 5m copies. Which was what Square Enix's expectations were."As a franchise, Square Enix is clearly invested in us," Amos continued, batting aside the notion that Tomb Raider's sales had ever meant trouble for the series' future. "They already let us get kickstarted on a sequel and they backed us with this [the game's upcoming Definitive Edition]."They've always been behind us, regardless of maybe what was said or how it was said in the press, and certainly at the end of the year we've actually gone over expectations because we've managed to get profitability back."But even with the game's development cost in mind, was Square Enix still realistic to actually expect such high sales numbers?"Everybody's expectation is desirable..." Amos laughed. "I think that, as far as realistic or not, what the market can bear... It's a very interesting time. How many people can sell games like Clash of Clans or Candy Crush and make that kind of money? Or Minecraft's sales? Expectations can get shifted so quickly it's difficult to know what realistic even means anymore."And, looking forward, clearly Square and Crystal are invested in the franchise. So, despite how it was said, what was said - we had a lot of people scratching their heads and asking about it - we're very happy to say that from a partnership internally, we're committed to it totally. Square Enix talks about it as a key franchise, so we're very happy with where we're at."Of course, Tomb Raider's upgraded Definitive Edition for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will help the title head even further past that line of profitability. But Amos dismissed the suggestion that it was a Square Enix-backed scheme to quickly boost sales further. "This was in the bag and on the way even before anything happened with sales expectations..."

January 18th, 2014, 00:09 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has developed brand new PS3 hardware to power its PlayStation Now streaming service, revealed earlier this month at CES in Las Vegas. Sources who have been briefed on the project suggest that the new PlayStation 3 consists of eight custom console units built into a single rack server. It's the new PlayStation hardware that everyone will have access to, but few will actually see.Initially, Digital Foundry has learned that Sony experimented by placing standard retail units into datacentres, but plans to use this for the actual PlayStation Now service were shelved for a number of reasons. For starters there's the sheer space requirement, along with power efficiency issues, as even the most recent PS3 hardware can still draw up to 80W from the mains. Sony's engineers were able to mitigate both issues by shrinking the equivalent of eight PS3s onto a single motherboard, housed in a slimline server cabinet. The second reason for the all-new PlayStation 3 server design is that it allows Sony to make hardware changes to the PS3 configuration that claw back a few vital milliseconds here and there to lower end-to-end latency. To understand this, we start by looking back at the PC-driven OnLive and Gaikai services, which are very similar. The idea with those services is that games run at 60Hz (or even higher) on PC hardware, lowering end-to-end latency by something in the region of 50ms compared to the console 30fps standard. Second-gen cloud hardware like GeForce Grid actually improves on that significantly by tying the video encoder directly into the graphics hardware. These latency-saving measures are then offset against the cloud streaming workflow - video encode, transmission over the internet, and client-side decode. In a very best-case scenario with OnLive and Gaikai, we can see input lag that is very, very close to a 30Hz console experience. Indeed, in our original Gaikai testing, we were able to play Bulletstorm with an end-to-end latency that occasionally hit 133ms - the same as the Xbox 360 version. It was an exceptional result (one captured for posterity if you're interested), but as a proof-of-concept it was extremely effective - and achieved on a standard ADSL connection.Unfortunately, this specific avenue of latency-saving is almost certainly not open to PlayStation Now. In order to retain compatibility with the existing library of games, the code-facing hardware within PlayStation 3 cannot be changed significantly: Cell and RSX - the CPU and GPU of the veteran console - can't be radically changed without introducing incompatibilities with the existing library of software. This presents a problem: the majority of PS3 titles run at 30 frames per second with input latency in the region of 100-150ms. Add on the cloud overhead and you're looking at a rather unsavoury, laggy experience. "The majority of PS3 titles run at 30 frames per second with input latency in the region of 100-150ms. The cloud overhead on top would provide an unsavoury experience, necessitating a new hardware solution."
Sony's Andrew House reveals the new PlayStation Now streaming service earlier this month at CES. The system goes into a closed public beta at the end of this month.
Gaikai was primarily a software team, but once it was bought up by Sony it was suddenly faced with a problem that could only be tackled by bespoke hardware. In creating new PS3 servers for the PlayStation Now, the team worked closely with their new colleagues in engineering, creating a new PS3 adapted to the cloud streaming challenge. The "secret sauce" of the new design remains just that - in its briefings to publishers participating in the current closed beta testing, Sony has only revealed rough details of the servers - but we can make some educated guesses on how the existing PS3 design could be tightened up for improved cloud gameplay.First of all, while we expect the basic designs of Cell and RSX to remain untouched, non-critical areas of the hardware can be upgraded. The network interface could be improved with a lower-latency interface, while the controller inputs could be swapped out with faster, hard-wired alternatives to the current wireless Bluetooth option used by the DualShock 3. Potentially, the polling rate of the controller inputs themselves could be increased significantly via a custom version of the PlayStation 3 operating system.A more significant latency saving could be achieved by bypassing the PS3's HDMI output altogether. Scan-out - the process of displaying the current framebuffer on-screen - takes 16.67ms. A PlayStation 3 cloud server could see the frame dispatched to a hardware h.264 video encoder as opposed to the existing console's HDMI output.By our estimates, the design tweaks we've suggested could (generously) only claw back around 30ms. That would fall some way short of the potential performance of cutting-edge systems like GeForce Grid, but there may well be further nips and tucks added to the design that could cumulatively produce a more significant saving on overall lag. The Gaikai team have the advantage of complete access to the PS3 design and the engineers that created it, so it may well be that there other latency-saving elements we simply can't anticipate. Only direct comparisons of end-to-end latency testing on PS3 and PlayStation Now can reveal how successful the team has been."The leaked roadmap gives some sense of the ambition Sony has here - PlayStation Now isn't just reserved for Sony TVs and consoles. Partners are also invited to add the service to their devices."
Sony is taking its time with PlayStation Now, with a phased roll-out of the service that will take over a year to complete - as this timeline reveals. The service should debut in the summer in the US, with Europe receiving PlayStation Now around six months later.
In the meantime, at the CES PlayStation Now reveal earlier this month, comments on lag varied between an enthusiastic "gameplay latency was a non-issue" from the official PlayStation blog, to a more measured response from Polygon, who described the experience as having "noticeable" input lag, though gameplay remained "more than playable".The experience looks similar to PS4 Vita Remote Play based on Polygon's hands-on video. The site reveals that the server was actually situated locally - in the same room, in fact - with the assumption being that PlayStation Now was running on a local network. Quite how good the overall experience is over the internet remains to be seen, then, but it is important to point out that the perception of latency varies from person to person. There will always be a trade between response and convenience, but clearly some game types will suit cloud gameplay more than others, while some people may not notice that much difference at all. That's where we are with PlayStation Now for now. The system is currently undergoing internal testing (we understand it is localised to southern California), which expands into a public beta at the end of January, according to Sony boss Andrew House. According to our sources, the service then rolls out to the USA in Q3 of this year (House has publicly targeted summer), before Japan and Korea gets their chance to sample the service towards the end of 2014. Europe has the longest wait of all, with PlayStation Now set to arrive in the first quarter of 2015 according to our sources. As you can see from the exclusive slide on this page obtained from a PlayStation Now presentation, Sony's own "SEL" devices like Bravia TVs get support in Q3 this year, with "partners" getting access to the functionality a little later. It will be interesting to see who those partners actually are, but it all points to a future where PlayStation isn't just about traditional console gaming, but an online service available to a range of different devices - not necessarily Sony-branded. All that's required is an interface with a joypad and an h.264 video decoder: smartphones, tablets, televisions - in theory, the sky is the limit. The big questions concern the quality of broadband infrastructure, the strategy behind placement of datacentres, and whether the quoted 5mbps video stream offers up enough bandwidth to a level of video quality good enough to sustain a true PlayStation experience. We'll find out more in the months to come.

HBO and Sony have teamed up to offer the HBO GO app on PlayStation devices.
As reported on the PS Blog, HBO CEO Richard Plepler announced the partnership at the inaugural Buzzfeed Brews event in New York City. The deal will see HBO GO launch "soon" on PS3, with a PS4 version to follow.
Sony Computer Entertainment America senior VP of business development Phil Rosenberg said: "With the HBO GO app on your PlayStation system and an HBO subscription via your cable or satellite provider, you'll have unlimited, on-demand access to your favorite HBO shows, like Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and True Detective.
"HBO GO offers every episode of every season of the network's best shows. You can also enjoy hit movies, sports, documentaries, and comedy specials, as well as special behind-the-scenes extras."
In addition to Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services, PS4 launched in the US in November 2013 with a range of third party entertainment apps including Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and Netflix.
The HBO Go app hit Xbox 360 in March 2012, although it's not currently available on Xbox One.

Are you ready to vanquish beasts plaguing the world by producing an army of children? ... Oh, you are? Well then! Atlus has shared a glimpse of the seven heroines you'll be building relationships with in Conception 2: Children of the Stars for the 3DS and Vita, complete with a second gallery of near-NSFW transformation gifs as they change outfits for battle.
Prepping for battle involves producing Star Children, which means players will need to befriend Conception 2's seven heroines: Chloe, Ellie, Feene, Fuuko, Narika, Serina and Torri. Besides their personalities, the associated press release notes battle-oriented attributes for each character - Fuuko uses Dual Pistols for example, while Ellie uses a Summoning Gun to dole out magical attacks - but it's unclear how those abilities will play into battles since you'll be fighting with Star Children.
First-run copies of Conception 2 will also include a 10-track CD composed byMasato Kouda (Devil May Cry, Monster Hunter series). You'll be able to start expanding your family for the sake of the world sometime this spring.

The first batch of promised free multiplayer maps, based on locations seen in the single-player campaign for Killzone: Shadow Fall, is on the way. The Cruiser, a map designed for more intimate close-quarters combat, is set within a decommissioned ISA cruiser ship (see: big boat) and is largely comprised of cramped corridors. The other map, The Hangar, places players within a wide-open Helghan mining spire, which serves as particularly good sniping grounds.
These maps unfortunately still haven't been dated for release. On top of the free maps, developer Guerrilla Games is also working on Killzone: Shadow Fall's first expansion pack, about which the studio promises to share more info in the near future. This first expansion pack will be available as part of the game'sSeason Pass content.
Killzone: Shadow Fall, a PS4 launch title, resides on the border between good and great, our review said. The game's multiplayer side is punctuated by a make-your-own game type editor, with which both of these proposed maps are fully compatible.

Tecmo Koei plans to resurrect its long-dormant Deception series with the upcoming Deception 4: Blood Ties, due to hit the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in March.
Released for the PSOne in 1996, Tecmo's Deception was a first-person action-RPG in which players forged a pact with Satan and tormented hapless do-gooders by constructing a trap-filled castle. It was rad. A sequel, Kagero: Deception 2, debuted in 1998, and the series' most recent entry, Trapt, hit the PlayStation 2 in 2005.
Deception 4 follows in the steps of its predecessors, featuring gameplay that revolves around setting up deadly traps and springing them on pursuers. Trap types range from sadistic (spiked walls, iron maidens) to goofy (falling bathtubs, banana peels) and players can upload replay videos of particularly nasty (or darkly hilarious) trap combos online to share with friends.
Deception 4 will launch in North America on March 25. A European release will follow on March 28.

An army of purpose built PS3 consoles is being amassed for the launch of PlayStation Now, it is being claimed.
Eurogamer reports that the new machines consist of eight custom built consoles housed in a single server unit.
The company had apparently originally planned to use standard PS3 retail units, but that such moves were abandoned due to the power consumption levels and the fact that these new custom units – which house the equivalent of eight PS3s on a single motherboard – offer better streaming performance.
While some PS3 components such as the infamous Cell chip have to remain unchanged to ensure compatibility with existing PS3 titles, other changes such as a revised network and controller interfaces are expected to have been introduced.
A custom PS3 OS will also likely be used and HDMI will quite possibly be ditched in favour of a hardware video encoder.
The site also claims that “the Gaikai team have the advantage of complete access to the PS3 design and the engineers that created it” and speculates that further, unknown measures to reduce latency will also be in development.
It estimates a public rollout in the US in Q3 2014 with an Asian launch to follow in Q4. Europe will have to wait until Q1 2015.

Britain’s broadband is more than capable of offering on-demand gaming, MCV has been told.
UK regulator Ofcom and games streaming specialist OnLive believe the roll out of fibre optic broadband has opened up streaming to more gamers than ever.
It follows the announcement of PlayStation Now at CES last week. Sony’s new streaming service lets gamers play PS3 titles on PS4, Vita, TVs, tablets and other ‘connected devices’. Sony says it requires a broadband speed of 5mb for a ‘good experience’.
However, Netflix says the UK’s average broadband speed is just 2.48Mbps, but Ofcom rejects that claim.
“In May 2013, the UK average peak-time download speed was 14.2Mbps,” an Ofcom spokesperson told MCV.
“Our panel is selected so it is representative of the UK population as a whole and our test results are weighted to make them fully representative.”
PC streaming firm OnLive acknowledges not everyone can manage streaming, but says acceptance is growing and the number of consumers with good broadband speeds is rising all the time.
“Back when Onlive was first announced, there was scepticism around whether game streaming could even work,” said OnLive’s general manager Bruce Grove.
“We will always be dependent on network infrastructure and broadband speeds being able to support the platform.”
“Not everyone has the infrastructure, but clearly many people now do. Over the last few years we’ve seen increased fibre deployments and people now routinely have 20Mbps, many can get 100Mbps
or greater.
“Sony has clearly seen the importance of game streaming as one of the ways players will want to access gaming libraries, and that in itself is an important validation of this sector.”

Sony will not be offering the option to switch off the DualShock 4’s rear LED in a future update.
Sony's president of worldwide studios Shuhei Yoshida simply replied “no” when asked about the possibility on Twitter, adding that “the LEDs do not use much battery”.
Some users have complained not only that the large LED on the back of the pad reduces the device’s already short battery life, but also that it can be a distraction in dark rooms, particularly when it reflects off the TV screen.
It is thought that the LED was introduced when Sony still planned on making the use of the PlayStation Camera compulsory – plans that are understood to have been scrapped in an effort to undercut the Xbox One RRP and capitalise on the anti-Kinect backlash.
It should be noted that the LED does have some practical uses – it allows PS4 to sign players in automatically and associate the correct layer with the correct gamertag. It is also used in some games, such as in Killzone: Shadow Fall where it changes to correspond to a player’s health.

If you were wondering exactly when and where you'd be able to watch the Gran Turismo documentary, we have the answer. On January 22nd, Kaz: Pushing the Virtual Divide will make its way into your home via Hulu streaming. PlayStation is hosting a round-table discussion with the filmmakers and Kazunori Yamauchi himself via its Twitch.tv channel that day, too. Need an incentive to tune in? Well, during the broadcast, you'll have a chance at winning $1,000,000 -- in Gran Turismo 6 bucks, of course. Now if you'll excuse us, we need some time to ponder why Sony didn't debut the film on its own streaming video service.

Typically, motion controllers aren't very good at adapting to different gameplay situations -- not unless you're willing to slap on a cheap plastic shell, anyway. Sony may improve that state of affairs in the future, though, as it recently filed for a patent on a modular PlayStation Move controller. The concept lets gamers attach parts to the Move that change not just how it feels, but how it behaves in-game. A set of "limbs" would turn it into a humanoid, for example, while a rotating part could switch between a gun and a sword. It's an intriguing idea, although we wouldn't count on seeing it any time soon. A modular system would likely raise the price of a future Move controller, and Sony has lately focused more on the DualShock 4's Move-like features than dedicated peripherals.

Resogun studio Housemarque is developing DLC for its PS4exclusive arcade shooter.
The studio confirmed plans to release Resogun DLC in a post on itsFacebook page, which was made in response to a question from a fan regarding a potential Vita version of the game.
"At the moment we are working on Resogun DLC and another PS4 project," Housemarque said.
It did not provide any further details on what the DLC will entail, or a timeframe for when it plans to provide more information.
In our Resogun review, we said the game was "one of the most exciting, lavishly produced twin-stick shooters" in history.
We added: "It has never felt quite this sublime to blow up enemies with spaceship fire. Next-gen lighting and particle effects ensure that discharging your fully charged Overdrive blast makes you feel like the smiting hand of Thor himself. Even your normal guns ramp up in excitement briskly as you amass upgrades."
In May 2013, Housemarque confirmed it was working on a second PS4 game alongside Resogun. Previous teases have suggested the mystery game may be a Dead Nation sequel.

Don’t Starve has proved to be another hit for Klei after Mark Of The Ninja. You can read reviews of each through the links.
Don’t Starve: Console Edition’s appearance on PS Plus this month pushed the game far beyond the one million players mark, developer Klei has told us. The studio hopes that the game’s appearance on PS4 as a free download will encourage greater sales of the forthcoming DLC, Reign Of Giants, and it will also explore the possibility of bringing the game to additional platforms once work on the add-on is finished.“Well before the end of 2013 we had over one million Don’t Starve players,” Klei’s Corey Rollins told us. “With PlayStation Plus, beyond promotion of being a featured game, a lot of people who maybe wouldn’t have tried our game did [try it] and really enjoyed it. Some of those people went on to check out the PC version as well, and would maybe be interested in the upcoming DLC.”The PS Plus release has proved to be a smart move for a studio which was once saved from starvation itself when it released Mark Of The Ninja; after the release of Don’t Starve on PC and with an additional boost in interest from the PlayStation version, Klei can look to the future with greater confidence than ever before, Rollins tells us.

PlayStation 4 early adopters are experiencing a widespread data corruption error resulting in lost progress and unplayable games, according to frequent reports in a 34-page PlayStation Forum thread.
Joystiq reader "Jim" wrote in to report the loss of 30 hours' worth of progress as a result of a glitch that the PS4 console identifies as "Error CE-34878-0." The bug isn't isolated to a specific game, as PlayStation community members report lost progress across several titles in the PlayStation 4's library, including NBA 2K14, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Battlefield 4, and Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag. In rare cases, "CE-34878-0" prevents users from starting any PlayStation 4 application, rendering the console unusable.
PlayStation forum members suggest a variety of solutions to the issue, ranging from save file deletion to a full console replacement. We've reached out to Sony for comment and await a response.

Die Gute Fabrik's local-multiplayer PS3 minigame compilation Sportsfriends will sail past its previously announced January release date, as its developers report that the final product is still several weeks away from completion.
A backer-only Kickstarter update explains that the four included games are "basically done" and on-budget, but the team needs "some more weeks" to apply polish and fix lingering bugs. To keep PC backers happy, Die Gute Fabrik will release beta versions of Sportsfriends on Windows, Mac, and Linux immediately after the PlayStation 3 port hits the PlayStation Store. Previously, PC players who backed the campaign were promised a release several weeks after the PS3 version's launch.
Sportsfriends met its crowdfunding goal of $150,000 in December of 2012, offering backers downloadable versions of J.S. Joust, BaraBariBall, Super Pole Riders, and Hokra. A PlayStation 4 port is also in the works.

The long-discussed Vita port of Borderlands 2 may be due on March 18, at least according to a now deleted tweet by publisher 2K Games, which we've screen-capped above. It was posted by the @2KInternational account this morning and then deleted shortly after.
It's worth noting 2K International covers the publisher's activity outside of the US, so even if the tweet is accurate, it might not reflect the release date in the States. As PlayStation Lifestyle reported in December, it's a date that's popped up before, that time on a NewEgg listing - that said, NewEgg lists the game currently for April 15. We've reached out to 2K Games for comment.
Looking back, it feels like the Vita port was as much in the limelight as the action-RPG shooter itself, after Gearbox received countless questions about the handheld venture it seemed so keen on. Thankfully, 2K Games and Sony put an end to the seemingly endless discussion by announcing it at Sony's Gamescom conference, and unveiling Divekick studio Iron Galaxy as its developer.
Update: Via the @2KInternational account, 2K Games said the March 18 date is incorrect.
"We apologize for a tweet about a release date for Borderlands 2 on Vita which was posted in error. The release date mentioned is incorrect," reads the 2K tweet.

Brothers stars a pair of siblings who must work together and solve environmental puzzles as they search for medicine for their sick father. The game boasts a unique control scheme that maps each brother to an analog stick, while the controller's shoulder buttons provide context-sensitive action. Think of it as Ico meets The Adventures of Cookie & Cream.
Brothers (also known as Bros: A Tale of Two Dudes) ranked in at #3 in Joystiq's editor-chosen list of 2013's best games. PlayStation Plus members also receive access to a selection of exclusive price drops starting tomorrow, including discounts for Sound Shapes, Rock Band Blitz, and Retro/Grade.

Japanese publisher Idea Factory International announced that its card-battling RPG Monster Monpiece is due for a digital PlayStation Vita release this spring in North America and Europe.
Monster Monpiece equips players with a deck of cards that represent the physical embodiment of "Monster Girls," all of whom boast their own unique skills and abilities in battle. Players power up these characters during combat by stroking the PS Vita's screen and touching specific spots on each card in the game's "First Crush Rub" mode.
Monster Monpiece earned some notoriety for its sexually suggestive character art, and its upcoming stateside release carries a Mature ESRB rating. The game still required some content trimming before it was deemed suitable for a North American release, however. While Monster Monpiece's storyline will be unaltered for its overseas launch, Idea Factory notes that several Monster Girl images will be removed from localized versions "due to the strong sexual nature of the card images."
"We fully understand that there are needs and demands for the complete version of these games," the company explains. "Our intention and motivation is to offer Idea Factory titles in a form that is as close as possible to the Japanese versions. This was a tough decision, but we would greatly appreciate your understanding and support."

After scouring through nearly four hundred t-shirt designs, Naughty Dog has selected the winners for its The Last of Us-inspired We Love Fine fan art contest. The fan-made and fan- and judge-voted contest slimmed down selections to five winners, each with a unique take on Naughty Dog's award-winning game.
The grand prize winner – a navy shirt featuring Ellie's silhouette – was selected by fans, the PlayStation Blog revealed today. The winning shirt was developed by graphic designer Brandon Meier, who walked away with $1160 in cash and a number of The Last of Us-based goodies as his award. Judges Troy Baker (voice of Joel), Ashley Johnson (voice of Ellie), Neil Druckmann (creative director) and Bruce Stranley (game director) selected runner-up winners and special prize category winners, culminating in a variety of designs that range from harrowing to adorable.
Shirts are available for men and women in a variety of sizes for $25.

The Elder Scrolls Online has been given a Mature rating by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. Bethesda noted on the game's official Facebook pagethat while it does not agree with the ESRB's rating, intimating that it expected a "Teen" label, it is "unwilling to change the game's content to achieve a different rating."
As a result, fans can expect Bethesda to promptly begin age-gating its Elder Scrolls Online materials, such as the game's website and trailers, though it mentioned that "the game we have created is the one we want our fans to be able to play." The Elder Scrolls Online is due out April 4 for PC and Mac with next-gen console launches following in June.

It's nice that 4K streaming is coming to match the onslaught of Ultra HD screens, but most media is still encoded with a "measly" 8 bits per color channel, rendering around 16 million colors. That might sound fine, but so-called deep color (10, 12 or 16 bits per color) can drastically improve images by eliminating nasty color banding -- and many new HD projectors, high-end TVs and monitors already support it. Now, a company called Folded Space wants to bring the media in line, too. It's developed algorithms to encode 12-bit Blu-ray discs with billions of colors, while keeping them backwards compatible with existing players -- and holding files to nearly the same size. For all that to happen, studios would need to adopt the encoding tech and manufacturers would also have to incorporate it into new Blu-ray players. Those are pretty big "ifs," but the company is offering the tech free to content creators to get the ball rolling -- meaning you might soon get full fidelity in shows that actually merit it.

Square Enix has issued a response to reports that, unlike Tomb Raider's Xbox One version, the PlayStation 4 edition will run at 60fps - although the company's statement offers little new clarity on the issue.
"Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience," a Square Enix spokesperson told Eurogamer."Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal given the type of experience Tomb Raider is and the exploration we want players to do. Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy."The company line is almost word for word what Eurogamer was told by executive producer Scot Amos last week, which we'll reproduce again below for comparison's sake:"The original goal for us, looking at both next-gen consoles... our minimum target was always gameplay front-to-back being 1080p and frame-rate 30fps. That was our target, and I'm very happy to say we've achieved that target on both consoles and anything above that is just gravy."Square Enix did not address executive producer Scot Amos' claim last night that the PlayStation 4 version will run at 60fps - a generous helping of gravy beyond 30fps.Will both platforms "offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience"? Stay tuned for Digital Foundry's definitive verdict.ORIGINAL STORY: Tomb Raider executive producer Scot Amos pointed out the feature during a GamesRadar livestream last night (thanks, Videogamer)."Looking here, this is the PS4 version running at 60fps, again at 1080p," Amos explained. "That's awesome for that to be able to showcase because when you get your hands on it you can feel it."Eurogamer asked Amos last week whether the game ran at 1080p 30fps on both consoles. His reply suggested that both were unlocked, and so would process as many frames as they could with a 30fps minimum."The original goal for us, looking at both next-gen consoles... our minimum target was always gameplay front-to-back being 1080p and frame-rate 30fps," he said, as part of a wider chat which covered Tomb Raider's original sales expectations and upcoming sequel."That was our target, and I'm very happy to say we've achieved that target on both consoles and anything above that is just gravy."A third report puts more firm numbers on both - an average of 60fps on PS4 and 30fps on Xbox One, although the latter can climb to 45fps during some simpler sequences.

Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor sounded a lot like Warner's excellent Batman Arkham games, and now it looks a lot like them in action, too. This first, substantial gameplay trailer shows our supernaturally infused ranger climbing around, spying on and very much hunting a gruesome array of 'orrible orcses, before seeing them off with deft, rhythmic murder. Many of the enemies are unique and sport distinct looks and personalities, because in Shadows of Mordor they can level up and find their own kind of fame within their own unwashed ranks. This has benefits to you, because letting them go in order to kill them later, when they're more powerful and more respected, gives better rewards. It also gives them a chance to spread word of your terrible powers, to sow fear amongst their ranks, or to boast of what they thought was your death. But you're an immortal spirit of vengeance, so there'll be no rest until your murdered family are avenged.Brutal, murky and gory - Shadows of Mordor and F.E.A.R. developer Monolith have our attention. The game's due on PC, PS4 and Xbox One, as well as on PS3 and Xbox 360, later this year.

Tomb Raider Definitive Edition has been demonstrated running at 60fps on PS4, making it the latest PlayStation game that boasts double the frame-rate as the Xbox One edition.
A Square Enix spokesperson would not explicitly verify the disparity between the two versions, although recent developments have gradually verified the difference.
On Thursday, GamesRadar published a video interview with Tomb Raider executive producer Scot Amos, who pointed out certain parts of the game was "the PS4 version running at 60fps at 1080p".
Square Enix has maintained that both next-gen versions were expected to run at thirty frames per second, and that any achievement beyond this would be a pleasant surprise.
"Delivering the core Tomb Raider gameplay at native 1080p and running at 30fps was always our primary goal," the corporation told CVG.
"Anything beyond 30fps for this version is gravy. Both platforms offer the same outstanding Tomb Raider experience," the company added.
Currently there are a handful of games on the new consoles that demonstrably run at higher frame-rates and/or resolutions on PlayStation 4 than on Xbox One, including Call of Duty: Ghosts.
Many consumers consider frame rate and resolution important aspects of their next-generation games, while other believe its significance is overstated.
It is unclear whether the trend, that Xbox One games tend to be less visually impressive than PS4 games, will persists. As developers unlock the potential of both machines over time, the differences may become negligible from the end-user's perspective.
A Tomb Raider Definitive Edition PC version will not be released, Square Enix has confirmed. The console versions will ship on Friday January 31 across Europe, and on Tuesday 28 in North America.

February. The month of Valentine's Day. It conjures images of chocolate, flowers, Hallmark cards and, if you're a PlayStation Plus member living in Europe, a lot of pants-wetting terror. Sony has revealed the February freebies for Europe's PS Plus members, and if it's scares and depression you're looking for on V-Day - and really, who isn't - Sony has you covered.
PS3 owners have two paths toward depression: They can take to the skies and visit 1912's most famous flying city, Columbia, in BioShock Infinite, or hop aboard the monster-ridden metro in Metro: Last Light. Vita owners have a decidedly more light-hearted journey ahead, as they'll have both Dynasty Warriors Next and ModNation Racers: Road Trip available to play.
Lastly, PS4 owners will get their chance to explore Mount Massive Asylum as journalist and all-around unlucky fellow Miles Upshur in Outlast. It should be noted however that Outlast will not be available in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, India or Turkey, and the game is still awaiting classification by German and Australian ratings boards.

After a month of generating new lands for PS3 users to explore, Minecraft has sold one million copies on the PlayStation Network. Mojang's David Kaplanshared the news on Mojang's blog, proving that there are actually still people on this Earth that have yet to buy the build-what-you-want adventure game.
Kaplan noted that the Mojang team is grateful for the support and hopeful that fans are receptive of future updates. As a sales recap, 11 million units of the PC version were sold by last June, and the Xbox 360 version has creeped outanother 10 million players with the unsettling hiss of Creepers.Wii U sales are just a bit lower in comparison, as Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Perssonnoted in December that there are "no current plans" to reach the console.

NIS America continues its plucky support of Sony's Vita handheld with Demon Gaze, a Japanese roleplaying game that will bring its diabolical creatures and moon-eyed heroines to the West on April 22.
In Demon Gaze, players assume the role of Oz, an amnesiac in a mysterious realm full of dungeons and monsters. Helpfully, Oz is a "demon gazer," which allows him to capture defeated demons and later use their powers. Described as a "dungeon crawl," Demon Gaze is played from a classic, first-person perspective. Players move forward one square at a time and each step has a chance to prompt an enemy attack or other event. As you can see from the collection of screenshots below, these old-school game design concepts are mated with modern 2D, anime-styled graphics.
If you're interested in pre-ordering Demon Gaze you should pay a to visit NIS America's online store. There you'll find the game in its Limited Edition form, which includes Demon Gaze, an art book, a soundtrack CD and a fancy box to store all of this swag. All of that can be yours for $50.

Our sister site Engadget got its hands on a PlayStation Vita TV, which acts as a middle-man for playing PS Vita games on your TV. The device also unlocks streaming of media to your TV through apps such as Hulu, albeit in a max resolution of 720p. PlayStation Vita TV is exclusive to Japan, but that didn't stop Engadget from importing one and whipping up a review of the $144 value pack version.
The Vita TV certainly fulfills a niche role, but the crux of the Engadget review is that while the product is quiet and unassuming, it doesn't do well to instill a need in users. If you really want to play PS VIta games on your TV with aDualShock 3 controller, then it's a rather expensive means to that end – and if the game uses touch controls, you've got even bigger problems.
The PlayStation Vita TV is easy to use thanks to the identical interface and software borrowed from the PS Vita itself, so PS Vita owners will find little difficulty making the transition. As it stands, however, there isn't much reason to consider that transition.
The PlayStation Vita TV is currently only available in Japan and, on its own, costs 10,000 yen ($96). Sony has not announced any plans to launch the Vita TV outside of Japan.

Sony has announced it will perform PlayStation Network maintenance on Monday, January 27, beginning at 9:30 AM Pacific (12:30 PM Eastern). The downtime is expected to run for six hours, until 3:30 PM Pacific (6:30 PM Eastern).
"If you've signed in to PlayStation Network any time since January 20th you will be able to play games online and access partner apps such as Netflix during this maintenance period," a forum post from PlayStation Senior Community Manager Paul Sullivan announced yesterday. The scheduled maintenance will disable access to the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and account management sections of PlayStation devices.
Sony suggests players log into the PlayStation Network prior to January 27 to ensure they can access their favorite online content. If your favorite online content includes running Battlefield 4issue-free, however, maybe throw a prayer to the gods of networking into the mix.

PlayStation UK is teasing a new ‘slim’ announcement for next week.
The invitation to a breakfast event set to take place at 9am on January 30th simply reads:
“Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history,
join us for an introduction to the slimmest.”
What could it mean? Well if we were guessing folk, and we are, we’d say it is the news of a UK release for the Slim PlayStation Vita, as released in Japan last year. The new PS Vita is 20 per cent thinner and 15 per cent lighter and replaces its nice OLED screen with a not-quite-as-nice-but-you-probably-won’t-notice LCD screen.
We’ll know for certain next week.

PS4 users can summon Final Fantasy 14: A Realm Reborn to their fancy new consoles on April 14, A Realm Reborn Producer and Director Naoki Yoshida announced during Square Enix's Letter from the Producer Live event.
DualShockers reports that Square Enix will also release a collector's edition, which will bundle content from previous PS3 and PC collector's editions with a Fat Chocobo Mount and a Wind-Up Moogle Minion. DualShockers notes that those who purchased A Realm Reborn's collector's editions on previous platforms will receive the new items for free.
While we didn't have have a specific date for A Realm Reborn's transition to PS4 until today, we already knew that the PS4 beta will begin on February 22. Those that started on PS3 can also try out the PS4 beta for free before deciding whether or not to double dip. Hopefully interested players can find a group they work with out of the 1.5 million accounts that have been registered for A Realm Reborn. And if not ... well, there's always Final Fantasy 15.

Sony Online Entertainment has spouted a fountain of news. First and foremost, it's closing a quartet of old MMOs: Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, Wizardry Online, Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures. Not enough people play to justify the upkeep, broadly speaking. Apparently Vanguard had been running at a loss for "a long time" but SOE didn't have the heart to tell players. That's what company president John Smedley told people on Reddit (via VG247).He also said SOE was done with child-focused games like Free Realms. "No more kids games," he stated. "Kids don't spend well and it's very difficult to run a kids game. Turns out kids do mean stuff to each other a lot."Free Realms and Clone Wars Adventures close first at the end of March, and Vanguard and Wizardry close at the end of July. Then Smedley confirmed finally that, "Yes, we will absolutely be bringing EverQuest Next to the Playstation 4!" While talking about that big and promising new MMO, he also said "if you like [Ultima Online], you're going to love EQN", which sounds just fine to me.
He gave an updated estimate for Planetside 2 on PS4, stating that "first half of this year is what we're shooting for". "It's taking time to do this right but coming along great." The Player Studio tool should arrive in the UK in April, apparently.Smedley mentioned an unannounced MMO that SOE was working on which, although being "completely new IP", will be something Star Wars Galaxies players of old should pay particular attention to."SWG PLAYERS," he yelled, "OUR NEXT GAME (not announced yet) IS DEDICATED TO YOU. Once we launch it... you can come home now."Smedley teased a possible rejuvenation for Legends of Norrath, the EverQuest card game, a decision prompted by the popularity of Blizzard's Hearthstone."Actually after seeing what Blizzard did with Hearthstone it's given us some other ideas..." he teased. "LON is an awesome card game. We can take that to the next level."The revised one-subscription-for-everything All Access plan was also announced (FAQ). Pay $14.99 a month and get access to all SOE games, including the upcoming EverQuest Next and EverQuest Next Landmark. Existing subscribers will be automatically upgraded when everthing kicks off on 2nd April.Plenty of new things on the horizon, then, but there's also life left in iconic MMOs EverQuest 1 & 2, and new expansions are in the works. "I've just seen the content update plan for EQ," said Smedley. "We heard the players loud and clear that they want a bigger expansion next time, and they'll get it. We'll be making EQ and EQ2 expansions for a long time to come. "

Rejuvenated MMO Final Fantasy 14 will spread onto PlayStation 4 on 14th April. And, if you're an existing player on PS3, you can transfer to playing the game on PS4 for free, retaining all your character data. But once you swap, you cannot go back.A PS4 beta test for the game starts 22nd February, and anyone with the console can play.Pre-ordering the game on PS4 gives you an Early Access weekend (11th-13th April) and two in-game items: Mog Cap and Cait Sith Doll Minion.A PS4 Collector's Edition gives in-game Fat Chocobo Mount and Wind-Up Moogle Minion items, as well as in-the-box goodies such as an art book, soundtrack, art card set, themed security token and movie thing called The Waning of the Sixth Sun.Incidentally, anyone who bought the FF14 Collector's Edition on PC or PS3 will get those Fat Chocobo Mount and Wind-Up Moogle items as well.FF14 Online requires a monthly subscription once the 30-day free trial runs out. January 27th, 2014, 20:57 Posted By: wraggster
The heavily hinted PlayStation 4 version of Everquest Next has finally been confirmed.
Speaking on a Reddit "ask me anything" thread, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley was asked if the PlayStation 4 version was in development.
"Yes, we will absolutely be bringing EQN to the PlayStation 4", he replied.
The statement marks the first unequivocal confirmation that the game is in development, following previous hints from Smedley.
In November, Smedley teased a journalist by refusing to confirm the game but hinting heavily that it was being planned.
"We haven't announced, technically, that we're putting it on PlayStation 4," the exec said at the time, "but it's fair to say that we're a Sony company so, you know, I say that with a smile on my face. I can't wait to see it on the PS4."
Originally announced last August, EverQuest Next is a free-to-play MMO that aims to evolve the genre with fully destructible environment physics that apply to "every piece of the world", more advanced AI and an open-ended storyline that will force the player to face the consequences of their actions and decisions.
SOE's free-to-play superhero game DC Universe Online launched alongside the PS4 in America, and is set to do the same in Europe when the PS4 is released on November 29. Meanwhile, the MMO first-person shooter Planetside 2 is expected to launch on PS4 in "Q1/Q2 2014".

The PlayStation 3 version of Minecraft has sold over a million copies since release, Mojang has confirmed.
The company's business developer Daniel Kaplan posted a short news story on the Mojang website announcing the milestone.
Given that the PlayStation 3 version of the game was released on December 17 in North America and December 18 in Europe, this means it reached the million sales mark in just its first five weeks on sale.
"Minecraft: PS3 Edition comes with everything present in other console versions," said Mojang's Owen Hill when the game originally launched. "They're pretty much identical to play, and will be developed in tandem from now on."
Downloadable skins and texture packs will be available on PSN shortly after the game launches, and while Hill did not confirm that PlayStation-exclusive content would be coming he did say it "would be cool", adding: "Fingers crossed, eh?"
Minecraft was announced for PS3, PS4 and Vita in August 2013. The company has said on Twitter that the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game are further back in its development queue.
The Xbox One version of Minecraft was announced at E3 in June. Building off the 360 version, it promises "larger maps for more complex structures, expanded multiplayer features and enhanced gameplay".
In December it was announced that the PC version of Minecraft had sold 13 million copies, with the Xbox 360 version selling another 10 million.

Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number will be available sometime between July and the end of September; the game's official Twitter account locked in a Q3 launch window today.
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number takes place before and after the events of the first game, which saw a nameless protagonist fulfilling murder requests left on his answering machine. The sequel ditches the 80s aesthetic of its predecessor for a more touchy-feely early 90s vibe – a large part of the game will be abouttouching characters' faces with baseball bats and feeling their life force drain away.
The first Hotline Miami launched in October 2012 to critical acclaim and commercial success. After making its debut on PC, the game was ported over to PS Vita and PS3 in February of last year, while a Mac version followed a month later. Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number will be available on PS4, PS Vita, PC, Linux and Mac OSX.

DICE is thanking fans for sticking with Battlefield 4 through its launch mess with an entire month devoted to players. Starting on February 1, DICE will dole out special community missions and initiate daily giveaways throughout the month.
Every day players log into Battlefield 4 in February, they'll receive a Bronze (weekdays) or Silver (weekends) level Battlepack, which provide random XP boosts and camouflage skins. Two shortcut bundles, which immediately unlock all grenade types and handguns, will also be made available during February at no cost; however, Battlefield 4 Premium owners will get two additional shortcut bundles that unlock all DMRs and shotguns. Finally, at some point in February, DICE will turn on the XP faucet through a double XP weekend event.
DICE says it will continue to work toward improving the Battlefield 4experience. The developer is actively working to improve the game's netcode, which will hopefully result in a more fluid online experience, and promises to share more details on that at a later time.

Color plays a big part in the vivid world of Borderlands 2, particularly in its loot system, so it makes sense Gearbox is adding a colorblind mode to its shooter. In an extensive post that goes into what colorblindness is and what can be done to help players who suffer with it, programmer Jeff Broome said the mode is coming to all platforms, with more info on its release "in the near future."
Like many loot-heavy games, Borderlands 2 uses colors to distinguish the rarity of the items spread across its wasteland. That color shines out from loot in a beam, and it features on their descriptions in the title. For colorblind players, distinguishing those different colors from one another is problematic, so Gearbox is modifying them to make them more identifiable, as well as denoting the color in text on the descriptions.
It's a shame it wasn't there when the game shipped - it it had, Gearbox would've been able to apply i to just one side of a split-screen, rather than the whole screen. Still, it's good it is being added, and that Gearbox has gone to the lengths of letting players specify different types of colorblindness; when toggling the mode, players can select Deuteranopia, Prtoanopia, or Tritanopia.

Dynasty Warriors developer Omega Force's highly anticipated monster hunting Vita affair Toukiden: The Age of Demons will launch in Europe on 14th February, but in the meantime publisher Tecmo Koei has released a comprehensive 10 hour demo.
As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, this gargantuan sampler will cover the first chapter and a half of the action epic that follows a team of monster hunters protecting the world from large, cool-looking oni. The demo will grant players access to all six of the game's weapon types, equipment and upgrades, and character customisation options.Like Monster Hunter before it, Toukiden will allow up to four-player online co-op and this demo contains seven of these team-based missions.Given how long the demo is, it's worth noting that all progress from it will carry over into the main game. About the only thing that can't be transferred into the main game are trophies - which are disabled in the demo - and player settings. The demo also only contains one save slot, whereas the full game will have three. But everything else will migrate just fine upon Toukiden's release next month.

Sony has begun sending out invites to its upcoming PlayStation Now game-streaming service, users report.
A small number of US PlayStation 3 owners recieved their beta invitations last night via email, (thanks, NeoGAF).No mention was made of when the beta test would actually begin, but the invite's wording suggests that testing will commence shortly.Sony recommended that beta participants have a 5Mbps or higher broadband connection and that they connect their PS3 to the internet via a wired ethernet cable."Congratulations, you have been selected to become one of the first gamers to participate in the PlayStation Now Private Beta!" the invitation reads."PlayStation Now is an exciting new game streaming service featuring instant access to a library of popular PlayStation 3 titles with no downloads or trips to the store required."With this invitation, you will receive exclusive access to test PlayStation's game streaming service before its full launch and the opportunity to provide your regular feedback to the PlayStation Now team."To confirm acceptance of this invitation, please click the link below to accept the Beta license agreement and watch your email in the coming days for your Beta voucher and instructions on how to redeem it."Sony previously invited US PlayStation owners to sign up for more information on PlayStation Now - it looks like the current crop of recipients have been taken from those who responded. The company has created brand new PS3 hardware to power PlayStation Now, Digital Foundry revealed earlier this month. Stylish top-down f***-'em-up Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is now due in Q3 2014, the developer announced on Twitter.Hopefully the Q3 release means more people will get my Halloween costume. (I'm the pig.)
"New stuff, old stuff, weird stuff and violent stuff all converging with some surprises," the developer added. "Should be worth the wait."It's unclear if the Q3 release is just in reference to the PC/Steam version - as the first game debuted on - or if it will simultaneously hit on its other announced platforms: Mac, PS4 and Vita. I've requested more info from developer Dennaton Games and will update when I hear more. The sequel will play similarly to the original and will follow multiple characters including a pig-headed (well, masked) actor starring in a film about the first Hotline Miami, while a group of Mansonite-esque fans have taken to the gruesome hobby of recreating the psychedelic ultra-violence of its predecessor. It will also feature a Hard Mode for that special type of animal mask wearing masochist."The first game from eccentric Swedish developer Jonatan Söderström and Dennis Wedin at Dennaton Games was an exploration of neon rage whereas Wrong Number will be fueled by an extra layer of sadness," I wrote in my Hotline Miami 2 previewafter seeing the game at E3 - where it was shown in an actual trailer tucked away in a parking lot.

Messaging from UK retailer ShopTo has all but confirmed a Western release for the new slimline PS Vita-2000.
Currently only on sale in Japan, the PS Vita-2000 will be made available for pre-order in UK from Thursday, January 30, according to an email blast (pictured below) sent to ShopTo customers on Wednesday. The ad did not specify an actual release date.
This comes just ahead of a Sony press conference taking place on Thursday, at which the firm has strongly hinted it will formally announce the slim Vita for Europe.
While Sony didn't specifically say what the press event was about, an invite sent to CVG offered a not-so-subtle hint; "Following the biggest launch in PlayStation history, join us for an introduction to the slimmest," it read.
So far the platform holder has made no mention of a North American release.
Sony originally revealed the PS Vita 2000 in September last year. Launched first in Japan on October 10 priced at 19,929 yen (£128 / $200 USD), the Wi-Fi handheld is 20 per cent thinner (15mm) and 20 per cent lighter (219g) than the original Vita.
The redesign boasts a high definition five inch LCD display, rather than the current Vita's OLED screen. It has a built-in 1GB memory card, while Sony says battery life has been extended by around one hour, now offering up to six hours of gameplay and seven hours of video playback.

Catalogue retailer Argos posted its best Christmas results in a decade with the help of video games.
The retailer called out gaming – in particular Xbox One and PS4 – for helping it increase like-for-like sales by 3.6 per cent. Sales of tablets and white goods also improved significantly.
The firm has become a significant player in games, and its 737 stores means Argos is now the UK’s biggest games retailer on the High Street.
Towards the end of last year it was picked by Sony and Microsoft to help stranded customers that had pre-ordered Xbox One and PS4 consoles from now defunct retailer Blockbuster.
The firm also launched a special video games mini-catalogue at the end of last year, and has been aggressive in its console bundles and pricing. This week it hit the headlines for cutting the price of Wii U to £180.

Though the screen in the Vita Slim is LCD, it will not feature a drastic decline in picture quality from the undeniably rich and vibrant OLED screen found in the original Vita, according to Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara.
"When we introduced Vita with the OLED screen that was considered - and it was - the pinnacle of screen technology," Gara told VG247. "It was a beautiful screen and LCD at the time would have felt like a compromise."
"What's happened in the interim is LCD screen technology has improved significantly," he added. "Whilst some think there's a subtle difference between the two, we think it's relatively imperceptible." Gara then goes on to explain that the new LCD screen allows Sony to build a smaller, lighter Vita while maintaining its processing power and battery life - a feat not possible with the attractive, but more power-hungry OLED display.
Gara echoed these sentiments in an interview with Eurogamer. "[The LCD screen is] giving bigger advantages than disadvantages - it's helping with the battery life, with the thickness. We think they are bigger wins than any subtle - if any - reduction in visual quality."
As we reported earlier today, the Vita Slim is slated for release in the UK on February 7. The updated handheld has been available in Japan since October, but there is no word yet on when or if it will make its way to North America.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch reminds me of "," an old series of short cartoons that used to air during Warner Bros' Animaniacs. The premise was ridiculous: Boo was a giant chicken that pretended to be human. He disguised himself as everything from a superhero to a respected Civil War general, and the punchline was always the same: Everyone around him, even his close friends, finally discovered he was a chicken.
Octodad employs a similar (though funnier) gag, telling the story of a typical suburban father determined to live his typical suburban life while hiding his greatest secret: He's an octopus. Like an episode of Chicken Boo, Octodad is brief and, for the same reasons as the cartoon, that's probably for the best, because you can only rely on the same gag for so long before it ceases to be funny.
And Octodadis funny. The very sight of a yellow octopus, its tentacles stuffed into a sky blue suit, is worth a chuckle on its own, and the humor is only compounded as the boneless curiosity wobbles across the ground, attempting to perform everyday tasks like mowing the lawn or shopping for groceries. It's at these moments when Octodad is at its greatest, as your desperate, flailing attempt to make a cup of coffee results in the near destruction of your kitchen.
But Octodad isn't a cartoon, and it's only when more traditional game elements are injected – boss fights, failure – that it starts to drag.

It's memories, robberies, and underground monstrosities for PlayStation Plus subscribers next month, with February's line-up featuring Remember Me,Payday 2, and Metro: Last Light. As for Vita, it's the cutesy karts of Modnation Racers: Road Trip, and the less cutesy cross-beats of Street Fighter X Tekken.
No, Plus hasn't forgotten about the PS4, silly billy. Sony's newest console is getting asylum horror Outlast on Plusnext month, but we already knew that. The real question is when: PlayStation UK's website says next week on February 5, so going by PSN traditions that'd mean a February 4 showing in North America. We'll find out for sure soon enough.
Looking at the PS3 games specifically, we'd recommend checking out the"suffocating despair" of shooter sequel Metro: Last Light - no really, it's fun! - and the heist-em-up capers of Payday 2 if you haven't already have. As forRemember Me? Well, if you like neo-action games full of neo-jargon, then sure - but maybe read Ludwig's neo-review first.

Nobody puts El Presidente in a corner. If El Presidente wants to be on more platforms, El Presidente is on more consoles. Publisher Kalypso announced this morning that Tropico 5 will be the first installment of the dictator sim to arrive on a Sony console, making its way to the PlayStation 4.
Curiously, there's no mention about when the banana republic adventure will make its way to PlayStation.
Following up with Kalypso, the publisher told Joystiq, "The PS4 version will follow after the launch of the PC, X360, Mac and Linux version. We haven't announced a release date for any format just yet."
The game's developer Haemimont had previously scheduled it for April 2014. We've asked Kalypso for an updated release window, but these tin cans with string we're trying to communicate on aren't very efficient. Kalypso has no confirmed release date.

We've had liftoff for Sony's slimmer Vita breaching the west, after Sony UK announced the thinner, lighter PCH-2000 is coming to the isle on February 7. As revealed at a conference attended by UK press this morning, it'll be priced around £180 in the country (that converts to just under $300) and will replace the older model there. The price is a big markdown on the launch figures we saw for the original handheld: around £230 for the Wi-Fi only model, and £280 for the 3G+ models. That said, it's a big markup on the PCH-2000's price in Japan of 19,929 yen, which converts to around $195.
The remodel, which was introduced to Japan in October 2013, is 20 percent thinner and 15 percent lighter than the original Vita, and replaces the OLED screen with a LCD offering. There's also a new micro USB slot for data backup and charging, a 1GB internal memory card, six hours battery life, and new power and notification indicators on the top.
There's no news yet about the slimmer iteration coming to other countries in Europe, let alone North America and beyond. Sony UK's other announcement this morning was a 10-game indie pack for the whole of Europe, featuring Alien Breed, Thomas Was Alone, Velocity Ultra, Men's Room Mayhem, Coconut Dodge Revitalized, Limbo, Hotline Miami, Total Recoil, Superfrog HD, and Floating Cloud Gods Saves the Pilgrims in HD. It'll be priced €25, or in a Vita bundle that also includes a 4GB memory card for €200 - no word yet if the Vita in this bundle is the original or new model.

Arc System Works' latest hyperkinetic fighter, BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma, is coming to Sony's Vita handheld as well as the PlayStation 3, according to Japan's Dengeki PlayStation magazine.
The magazine's report (helpfully translated by Siliconera), claims that the handheld incarnation of BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma will feature DLC cross-buy functionality with the PS3 game as well as the updates planned for the arcade version of the fighter. Siliconera also notes that "beach events" are being added to the game, though it's unclear what exactly they might entail.
Lacking from the Siliconera report is any word on when BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma might hit the Vita. However, a Gematsu translation of the same Dengeki PlayStation article states that the game will make its Japanese debut on April 24, and that it will feature a price tag of 5,800 yen (about $58). No Western release dates have yet been revealed.

Indie developer Bloober Team has announced that PlayStation 4-exclusive strategy-action game Basement Crawl will not be released this week as originally planned. This marks the second major delay for Basement Crawl, a game first announced as a PS4 launch release.
"While the completed version of Basement Crawl was prepped for launch during the last week, several exciting opportunities to partner with major industry players to enhance, refine and add to the game arose," stated Bloober Team CEO Piotr Babieno in an announcement this morning. "Although a difficult decision, we decided that the best choice for us, as a team, was to delay Basement Crawl so that we could take full advantage of these opportunities."
Babieno makes no mention of what these opportunities might be, nor does he offer a new release date for Basement Crawl. Intriguingly, he does say that these opportunities will help "grow and improve the game while still providing an amazingly fun multiplayer experience for PS4 owners." Despite whatever changes Basement Crawl may see, Bloober Team still plans to release the game to the PlayStation Network during the first quarter of 2014.

Killzone: Shadow Fall, the latest entry in Guerrilla Games' series about shooting anyone with glowing red eyes, has sold over 2.1 million copies worldwide. That figure accounts for physical Blu-ray discs and downloads sold through the PlayStation Store.
The 2.1 million milestone was achieved on January 15, Sony says. To put that into perspective, Killzone 2 took nearly seven weeks to reach one million in sales. Though we're missing exact figures, we know Killzone 3 debuted at the number eight spot in the February 2011 NPD charts.
Killzone: Shadow Fall is set on the planet Vekta, where both the Helghan and the ISA reside. Players take up the role of Lucas Kellan, a covert assassin and espionage agent. Kellan works behind the scenes under the orders of ISA Shadow Marshal director Thomas Sinclair, a man who seemingly views the Helghan as animals more than the gun fodder our review suggests they are.

PlayStation and PS2 backward compatibility may soon be coming to the PlayStation 4, a source close to Sony told Eurogamer this week.
Notably, the source stated that backward-compatible PSOne and PS2 games would be stored locally on PlayStation 4 consoles and recreated via emulation. The claim runs contrary to Sony's previously announced plans to offer PS1 and PS2 games remotely via its PlayStation Now streaming service. According to Eurogamer's source, Sony still plans to make legacy PlayStation 3 games available via cloud streaming on the PlayStation 4.
The source additionally claims that Sony is working to ensure that backward-compatible games are optimized for native HD resolutions, eliminating the blurred upscaling seen in emulated releases on the PlayStation 3. We've reached out to Sony for comment regarding these rumored features, and currently await a response.

As with all updates for Polyphony Digital's latest racing simulation, Gran Turismo 6., 1.04 brings with it a number of new features and new vehicles.
The new additions to the Gran Turismo 6 garage include a special Gran Turismo Racing Series iteration of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision, a Corvette Stingray Gran Turismo Concept car, and two F1 cars, the Gran Turismo Red Bull X2014 Standard and the Gran Turismo Red Bull X2014 Fan Car. Those last two rides are available as part of the new Red Bull X Challenge, a series of races now found in the game's career mode where players are instructed on how to race an F1 car by current World Champion Sebastian Vettel.
Alongside this handful of cars comes an unexpected but thoughtful present from the developers behind Gran Turismo 6. Following the installation of the 1.04 update, Gran Turismo 6 will scan your PlayStation Network information to determine when you were born. Then, once your birthday rolls around, you'll automatically receive a car created in or near the year that you were born, totally gratis.

While PS4 continues to outstrip its rival Xbox One, the same certainly can’t be said of Vita and its contemporary, 3DS.
PlayStation Vita is loved by many, but owned by relatively few. While 3DS is a very different proposition, the fact remains that in the handheld space it has outsold Sony’s handheld significantly, and with almost nonchalant ease.So this morning’s PlayStation Breakfast Briefing was an attempt to enliven Vita’s fortunes a little. While the announcements made atop London’s Centrepoint couldn’t match the spectacular views of the capital, they will go some way to improving Vita’s appeal, though it is difficult to see a complete turnaround for the handheld. The expected new Vita model was confirmed for a UK release on February 7 at around £180, sporting a cheaper screen, slimmer form factor and built-in 1GB of memory. A £20 indie bundle including ten games, including Thomas Was Alone, Velocity Ultra and Limbo, represents another shot in the arm for indies on the handheld. It’s a highly seasonal console, said Sony, with sales “exploding” at Christmas and boosted by the arrival of PS4. But it still can’t touch 3DS for sheer sales volume, and the forthcoming slate lacks a true system seller. Family-friendly titles like Invizimals: The Alliance, PlayStation Vita Pets and the LEGO movie videogame will all cater for a younger audience, while Hohokum, Big Fest, Helldivers, Destiny of Spirits, Murasaki Baby, Final Fantasy X / X-2 and Football Manager Classic 2014 are each aimed at more dedicated players.More intriguing was the preceding string of graphs which, happily for Sony, all went up and up. UK boss Fergal Gara had been told by his superiors last year that PlayStation must reclaim the UK market, and through a strong year for PS3 and the launch of its successor, it had made great strides in that regard. Sony’s volume share of the console market – including handheld – has gone up from 23 per cent two years ago to 40 per cent. On home console, PlayStation has moved from a “humble” 32 per cent to 47 per cent and reclaimed its place as market leader, said Gara.

The difference between the Vita Slim’s LED display and the Original Vita’s OLED display is “small, if not imperceptible” if it exists at all, Sony has claimed.
The new Vita arrives in the UK next month and with no plans to replenish stock of the existing model, gamers will have to act fast if they want to secure the current design.
A lot of attention online has been devoted to the fact that the new model uses a supposedly inferior LCD display in favour of the existing OLED panel. But Sony has questioned whether the difference is as stark as is being made out.
“When we introduced Vita with the OLED screen that was considered – and it was – the pinnacle of screen technology. It was a beautiful screen and LCD at the time would have felt like a compromise,” Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told VG247.
“What’s happened in the interim is LCD screen technology has improved significantly. Whilst some think there’s a subtle difference between the two, we think it’s relatively imperceptible.
“Technology is always full of compromises and trade-offs, and we believe we’ve got the trade-offs right. In other words, if there’s any degradation in screen technology it’s very subtle, but it’s also helping us achieve other advantages.”
Gara echoed the sentiment when speaking to Eurogamer.
“Is it a downgrade, is the question?” he argued. "I think screen technology has evolved significantly since Vita was introduced. OLED was the high end around then - and it remains at the high end. The thing that's changed is LCD technology has improved, so we believe the differences are very small.
“We wouldn't introduce the device if that compromise was significant. We think it's very small, if not imperceptible. It's giving bigger advantages than disadvantages – it's helping with the battery life, with the thickness. We think they are bigger wins than any subtle – if any – reduction in visual quality.”
You can judge the difference for yourself in this Product Reviews post, which also includes a video.
Says the site: “As we told you with the Japanese launch though, there is a significant difference in quality compared to OLED and it may not be a downgrade that you are willing to live with.”

Sony has claimed that PS4 is experiencing a significant sales advantage over its rival Xbox One in the UK.
UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer that its machine is outselling Microsoft’s by a ratio of 1.5-to-1 in the UK. That means for every two Xbox Ones sold PS4 is selling three units.
Note too that Xbox One stock remains – on the whole – easier to obtain than PS4 in the UK.
The numbers are all the more impressive considering the extent of Xbox 360’s UK victory. While Europe has traditionally fallen on the side of PlayStation, Xbox 360 was the comfortable last-gen victor in the UK, despite a late and prolonged surge from PS3.
Indeed, Gera admits that with regard to Xbox 360 and PS3, Microsoft’s machine enjoyed a 1.5-to-1 sales advantage over Sony’s in the UK.
The latest global next-gen sales figures show 4.2m PS4 unit sales. Xbox One, on the other hand, has ‘shipped’ 3.9m units, with actual sales remaining unknown but estimated to be around 3m. That represents a sales ratio of 2-to-1.5.

Sony expects the current ‘fat’ Vita model to have disappeared from the UK High Street in the very near future.
The company this morning confirmed the launch of the PlayStation Vita Slim next month and has now confirmed that the device is a direct replacement for the current model.
"[The slim Vita will] dovetail in behind very quickly, because there's very little stock of the Vita out there," Sony UK MD Fergal Gara told Digital Spy. "It's not like they're going to co-exist in any meaningful way for any period of time. There is no stock at all."
Will this create a rush for the current model? Possibly. While the Slim offers a number of improvements over the existing SKU there are many who prefer the current machine due to its inclusion of an OLED screen. The Slim uses an LCD panel which is slightly less vivid.

His original grunts from the films are licensed for use here, as are Colonel Trautman's and some music from the film.Polish dev Teyon is behind the game.If you pre-order the game you get a little Rambo figurine. EA has release its latest Battlefield 4 patch on PlayStation 4.
This update is mainly designed to prepare the game for the upcoming release of expansion pack Second Assault, a Battlefield forum post said.
This month DICE detailed further weapon tweaks and changes to vehicles set to be made to the shooter over the coming weeks.
Jan 30 PS4 Game Update Notes
DMR Balance Tweaks
-Increased the damage of all DMRs across all ranges. Specifically, damage has been increased at long ranges to allow three-hit kills against unarmored opponents. Additionally, reduced the penalty to accuracy for sustained DMR fire, allowing more rapid follow up shots in combat. The amount of the damage increase varies from weapon to weapon, according to its intended range, rate of fire, and damage. We will continue to monitor the effectiveness of DMRs in combat, and determine if additional action is needed to make DMRs a viable mid to long range weapon.
Other items
-Significantly reduced the duration of the black screen when spawning in, and fixed the issue with players getting killed before being in-game
-Greatly reduced the risk of crosshairs disappearing, which would also result in hit markers disappearing
-Added a headshot icon on the killcard. This should help identify instances where players are correctly killed by one shot
-Fixed an issue in Squad Deathmatch where the "Win/Lose" text was overlapping
-Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the SOFLAM
-Fixed an issue with players using an exploit for the MAV
-Fixed the gameplay code to properly track the FOV (Field of View) changes in the options menu
-Fixed an issue where chat would break when entering "false" or "true" in the chat window
-Fixed an out-of-helicopter glitch in Air Superiority where players could spawn on the ground and play as infantry
-Fixed the misaligned crosshairs on the T90 MBT
-Added setting to tweak joystick dead zone
-Various minor crash fixes http://www.computerandvideogames.com...-fixes-issues/

Decisions, decisions, decisions. Saying it three times won't make things any easier, but that's where we come in. Sony's latest iteration of the PlayStation Vita handheld, which we're going to call the Vita Slim from now on (as seems to be the fashion), is coming to the UK, having previously only been available in Asia. It's up for pre-order right now and will launch a week from today -- so, do you want one? The choice is ultimately yours, of course, and it's a delicate one, but if the pressure is too much to bear, then head past the break where we explore how the Slim stacks up against the Vita of old, and whether it's really worth the extra £50 (or roughly $80, in US terms) for a console that delivers essentially the same experience.

The latest update for Sony's PlayStation mobile app is out for Android and iOS, and it's surprisingly video-focused. Thanks to the new Live from PlayStation section, available game streams can be browsed directly from your device -- although they won't open in the app itself. Ustream feeds open in the service's own application (at least on Android), while Twitch.tv streams are relegated to your mobile device's browser. The change log also notes that video notifications from the PS Store are supported, and you'll find them under the What's New section on the home screen. Additionally, the update promises to not pull yourPS4 out of sleep mode when you open the app to, say, accept a friend request or queue a game download -- perfect if you're looking to conserve a little electricity.

El Presidente and the Tropico series are making their PlayStation debut.
Tropico 5 was announced last year for PC, Mac and Xbox 360. But now publisher Kalypso Media has confirmed the title for PS4, whilst oddly making no mention of a potential Xbox One release.
The publisher also confirmed the latest entry in the island management series will feature multiplayer for the first time in its history, including both cooperative and competitive modes for up to four players.
“We are delighted to be able to work with Sony to bring Tropico 5 to PS4 and enter the next-generation market,” said Andrew Johnson, Managing Director, Kalypso Media UK.
"We have been evaluating many new and exciting development opportunities for the Tropico brand and by bringing Tropico 5 to PS4 we open a new chapter in the history of the game. By taking full advantage of the PS4's processing power the island of Tropico and El Presidente have never looked better," said Stefan Marcinek, Global Managing Director, Kalypso Media.
Tropico 5 is currently set for a 2014 release across all versions.

There isn't a single character who won't undergo some tweaking in Ultra Street Fighter 4. Capcom posted a massive change log over on Capcom-Unity, revealing not only individual character balances, but also some more detail on how the new Red Focus attacks and Ultra Combo Doubles will work.
Red Focus attacks, charged strikes that allow the user to absorb an infinite barrage of hits while they wind up and deliver a focused attack, are performed by hitting the light punch, medium punch and medium kick buttons all at the same time. Red Focus takes up two meters from a fighter's Super guage, but you can also perform an EX version of that same move using three meters.
Capcom also broke down the damage output for characters who choose to employ the Ultra Combo Double, which lets fighters go into a match having both of their character-specific Ultra Combo moves equipped; however, going this route sacrifices some of the potency. Zangief, Cammy, Fei Long, T.Hawk, Makoto, Hakan, Dhalsim, Rose, Akuma, E. Honda and Hugo will all do 60% of their usual damage when utilizing the Ultra Combo Double, while every other fighter in Ultra Street Fighter 4 will do 75% of their Ultra's usual damage.
As for individual character changes, a lot of folks are having certain standing attacks and special moves sped up, while a few others like Chun Li and Evil Ryu will be given extra life in Ultra Street Fighter 4. For the full breakdown on character-specific changes, hit up Capcom-Unity.

Aksys Games confirmed that it will release an English-language version of Acquire and ZeroDiv's PS Vita dungeon-crawling RPG Mind Zero in North America and Europe this spring.
Similar in premise to Atlus' Persona series, Mind Zero stars a high school student who forges a pact with a "Mind," a supernatural being that grants its partner special abilities and magic attacks. Party members come equipped with unique Minds, which players can switch out and call upon to exploit enemy weaknesses in battle.
Mind Zero will be priced at $39.99 when it launches at retail and digitally via the PlayStation Network in North America. Aksys will skip a retail release in Europe, opting instead to launch the game exclusively as a digital download.

Surge Deluxe is the next PS Mobile-to-Vita game from Futurlab, the UK studio that turned Velocity into Velocity Ultra. Sure, the world has plenty of match-3 puzzlers, but this one has rainbow neon lights, lightning-like currents, and super high scores that make "CYBORG" appear on the screen - as every self-respecting match-3 puzzler should.
According to Futurlab, the Vita-enhanced version features a redesigned scoring system to better reward top players and negate grinding, a couple of new blocks to ramp up those multipliers and chains, and some clever colorblind-friendliness: Affected players will be able to distinguish the colored blocks thanks to their different shapes.
No word on prices yet beyond a tweet saying "under a fiver" for euro-types, but the release dates are locked in: February 4 for North America, and the day after for Europe.
