Sony could be preparing to reveal the true sequel to PSP at next month's E3, according to speculation from a 'senior industry source'.
The anonymous speaker told MCV that two key publishers have significantly increased their marketing spend for Q4 2010, laying down the basis for suspicions they are preparing for the arrival of new hardware - PSP 2 or otherwise a fifth hardware iteration.
The site also reports that a separate publisher alluded to the development of several new PSP titles, but is withholding its future PSP plans pending a specific announcement from Sony.
PSP has been out for six years and has seen three hardware re-iterations since the original in 2004. While the third gen PSP-3000 has seen relative success of late, the PSPgo, the most recent and most radical re-shaping of the PSP SKUs, is performing badly in all regions although Sony is yet to release any official figures.
Nintendo announced its next handheld, the Nintendo 3DS, back in March, which will boast the ability to display 3D effects without the need for 3D glasses, and confirmed it will be unveiled at E3 this year.
While it's possible that Sony could be ready to reveal its response to the 3DS, MCV notes that its report is purely the speculation of its source, who did not claim to have seen one or been informed of its existence.
