Videogame revenue was down across the board in April 2010, compared to the same time last year. While the factors contributing to the decline are many, it would appear the handheld segment of the market was the real culprit.
“The portable side of the industry contributed more than its fair share to the industry decline,” according to NPD analyst Anita Frazier. “The portable business across hardware, software and accessories accounted for 25% of total industry dollar sales in April but declines in portable sales compared to April ‘09 accounted for 61% of the total industry decrease”.
In April 2009, the Nintendo DS sold over a million units of hardware. In April 2010, of all the platforms that declined compared to last year, the DS accounts for 71% of the overall hardware decline. Meanwhile, the PSP suffered an equally great drop in hardware sales, down from 116K units in April ‘09 to 65.5K units in 2010.
An important point to note here, however, is that the NPD group don’t track iPhone and iPad sales in their report, both of which certainly count as portable platforms for gaming.

Kevin Butler, VP of PlayStation advertising, has teased that his next project will be Gran Turismo 5. The hints raise our hopes for an imminent release of Polyphony Digital's expected masterpiece.
Butler takes on the role of VP of Artistic Modification in his latest ad, presenting the products of his artistic mind in ModNation Racers.
The spotlight features such great lines as "Half horse, half motorcycle, half man, all awesome" and "Tell me more, grown up child actor." That last jibe is targeted at CEO of SCEA, Jack Tretton, who responds with his own witty one-liners as they compete for poll position.
As much as we love ModNation Racers, it's the end of the trailer that grabs our attention. Butler implies that his next advertising and gaming project is Gran Turismo 5, which must be solid evidence for a 2010 launch for the game.
"So pick up ModNation Racers to download my mod and track, then create your own. Maybe I'll take a spin in your epic artistic endeavour. That is if I'm not two busy with my next project. Let's just say it's a little racing game that rhymes with Man Furismo Jive."
A number of US retailers have pinned an October release date on GT5 and with E3 just around the corner, we're not only expecting a full blow-out on the game, but also a solid release date.

Rockstar may be preparing to steal the show at next month’s E3 Expo in LA with the first news on next-gen sequel Grand Theft Auto V.
That’s according to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnish, who made the prediction to Games Informer.
“I think we’re going to hear about another Grand Theft Auto,” he stated. “I think there won’t be any playable stuff. I think they’ll give you some type of teaser, because we do think that a year from then in 2011 we’re going to see another Grand Theft Auto.”
Divnich also added that he thinks it’s unlikely Microsoft will go one better than it did in 2006 and shell out for total platform exclusivity. Nor, does he believe, that Sony will try and regain one its most cherished exclusives of yesteryear.
“I don't foresee Microsoft or Sony attempting to obtain any type of exclusivity with the next Grand Theft Auto,” he outlined.
“Microsoft paid a lot of money for exclusivity on the downloadable content for GTA IV, which unfortunately did little to move consoles for Microsoft.
“Back in 2004, the Grand Theft Auto was a huge brand, but only relative to the other brands that existed at the time. While the GTA brand is certainly bigger now than it was five years ago, others have emerged to reach similar levels of success, such as Call of Duty or Guitar Hero. In other words, if Sony gets an exclusive deal on GTA V, it would do little to disrupt Microsoft's ability to move hardware, and vice versa.”

Sony's disabling of Linux on the PS3 has made many people very angry, some more so than others, but for an enthusiast named madshaun1984 it was something of a call to arms. He didn't file a lawsuit or whine about it in forums -- oh no. He sat down to get XBMC working and has succeeded, albeit slowly. Right now the CellSDK that this build relies upon is not up to snuff performance-wise, so just scrolling through media is somewhat less than fun and you can forget about playing it. But, the hope is to improve that and to turn the PS3 into a proper media-streaming Linux box... so long as you don't update the firmware, anyway. Full instructions on how to do this are at the source link, but be prepared to spend the better part of an afternoon at it if you want to try yourself. For those not ready for that kind of commitment (or anyone who already has the latest firmware) you can just enjoy the video proof after the break.

The Lavalit Team have released a new build of Openbor for the Dreamcast, Dingoo, PSP, Gp2x, Wii and Wiz.
OpenBOR is a continuation of Beats Of Rage originally created by the wonderful
folks over at http://www.senileteam.com
History
----------------------
As fans of the 'Streets of Rage' series that originally appeared on the SEGA
megadrive/genesis, we always wanted to see streets of rage 4. But the waiting
proved futile, and streets of rage 4 never came. That's why we tried to correct
this mistake and fill the void by making the ultimate tribute to Streets of Rage:
Beats of Rage!!
Development
----------------------
Beats of Rage was created by Senile Team. However, the character sprites and
some parts of the backgrounds are taken from 'the King of Fighters' games by
SNK Playmore. Therefore special thanks go out to SNK Playmore and SEGA who
unknowingly helped in creating this game.
Beats of Rage and OpenBOR are a free, fully functional game, which includes
music, and features six playable levels plus a bonus level. It is available
for many systems
Whats New
Changed 32-bit integer typedefs in gfxtypes.h from long to int. Remember: 64-bit compilers treat longs as 64-bit integers; int is 32-bit across all platforms!

Excuse the pun, but we had nearly forgotten about the PSP version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. While Ubisoft has been busy promoting the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii counterparts, it's only now that it has unveiled the PSP version. Joel Vignola, Ubisoft producer, debuted a new video on the PlayStation.Blog (embedded after the break) and emphasized that the PSP version is a "unique game built from the ground up" and "is not a port from any other system."
While the console versions are full 3D adventures, the PSP version appears to play on a 2D field, akin to Prince of Persia Classic. However, Vignola clarified a bit further, describing the game as a "3D sidescroller, because the world itself is 3D and we play with depth ... the Prince [is] not always locked onto an axis."
As with Assassin's Creed Bloodlines, The Forgotten Sands is promising connectivity between the PS3 and PSP versions of the game. By connecting the two, you'll be awarded bonus XP in the PS3 version and the original Sands of Time costume for the PSP version. Hopefully, the similarities with the PSP Assassin's Creed end there -- Bloodlines wasn't exactly a critical darling.
The PSP version of Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will be available on UMD and PSN on the same day as its console counterparts: May 18.

PSP owners have a lot of RPGs to look forward to. XSEED has announced a new partnership with Nihon Falcom that promises to bring six new games for the North American audience. Ys Seven, Ys: The Oath in Felghana, and Ys I & II Chronicles will all arrive on PSP, with Ys Seven the first title to be released under this new agreement. According to the press release, Ys Seven is the first iteration of the long-running JRPG franchise to be built "specifically for the PSP system," promising "virtually no load times" -- a problem that has plagued many of Falcom's previous PSP efforts.
In addition to Ys, XSEED will also be publishing the next three chapters of The Legend of Heroes saga (known as Sora no Kiseki in Japan). "I couldn't be more pleased to announce a partnership with a development studio as renown by gamers for consistently putting out quality titles as Falcom," Jun Iwasaki, President of XSEED Games, said in the press release. "Their titles have always been some of the most requested titles so it is going to be our pleasure to oblige the North American fans by delivering an amazing line up of in-depth and gripping RPGs."

Xbox Live's Major Nelson had Infinity Ward "creative strategist" Robert Bowling on his podcast recently to talk about the upcoming Resurgence Map Pack for Modern Warfare 2. Set to release on June 3 on Xbox Live, the pack will be priced at 1200 ($15) -- the same as its predecessor, the Stimulus Pack. Resurgence will feature maps old and new, including two Call of Duty 4 maps and three new locations:
Vacant -- the wide open Russian office complex from CoD4
Strike -- the urban town surrounded by hotels from CoD4
Carnival -- an abandoned carnival area with a Ferris wheel, fun house and other attractions
Trailer Park -- full of "super tight corridors" and featuring a pool ("Mobile Estates," Bowling calls it)
Fuel -- a "sniper haven" based in and around an oil refinery
Bowling says that the new maps will be tied to specific playlists, just like the Stimulus maps. With the Resurgence collection, however, it's possible that all of the maps will be available in every playlist, as long as "demand is high." And, as with the previous pack, the new maps will be exclusive to Xbox 360 for a short time before coming to PC and PS3.

Jesse Venbrux must be quite proud of his indie platformer, They Need To Be Fed. Not only did he recently win the top prize of the YoYo Games competition, he's earned a $1,000 cash prize, and a deal to port the game over to PSP.
The platformer can be best described as a 2D version of Super Mario Galaxy, with players navigating the unique gravity of each platform to reach their goal: to be eaten. If that doesn't make much sense, you can wait for the PSP version, planned for release this summer, so you can see for yourself.

Polyphony Digital has revealed that there will be three circuits from Germany's motorsport Mecca, the Nürburgring, in Gran Turismo 5.
The famous and daunting 14-mile Nordschleife (star of every single motorsport game made since, oh, PGR2?) will feature alongside the modern Grand Prix track and the Nürburgring 24 Hours course.
You can read more about it and see screens at the US PlayStation blog and the official GT5 site. Or, if you happen to be going to the Nürburgring 24 Hours race this weekend, you can try it out for yourself.
"For a car enthusiast, the Nürburgring is the equivalent to what places like the Eiger Nordwand or Mount Everest means to a mountaineer," said GT creator Kazunori Yamauchi. "There is that special allure about it that you just can't explain in words."
It seems there's still no-one at Sony brave enough to tell Yamauchi-san to stop adding things to his game and release it already. In recent months, the addition of NASCAR racing has been announced, and rumours have swirled around support for 3D and PlayStation Move.
Gran Turismo 5, first revealed in 2006, has had its March 2010 Japanese launch delayed and currently has no release date. On the PlayStation Blog, the game's US producer hints that we should look forward to more news from E3 next month. Let's hope it's a date, not a new feature.

PlayStation 3 sales rose to 13 million units in the company's latest financial year, ended 31st March 2010, an increase of 3m units year-on-year.
PSP sales, however, sagged from 14.1m to 9.9m. PS2 sales dropped from 7.9m to 7.3m.
Sales of PS3 games rose to 115.3m units during up from 103.7m the previous year. In comparison, PSP titles were down to 44.4m units compared to 50.3m the year before. PS2 games felt the sharpest decline, dropping to 35.7m units from 83.5m.
Sony reckons software sales will remain the same across all three formats in the year ahead. However, Sony also reckons it will "increase significantly" the amount of dosh it makes.
"Sony also plans to aggressively launch 3D-related products, network services and other new business with the aim of future growth," the company said in a statement.
In money terms, the Network Product and Services division, which includes the PlayStation business, recorded a loss of £597m, which was a bit better - ¥4.4 billion better - than last year. Sony Walkmans apparently raked in the cash.
Overall, Sony enjoyed an in-the-green income of £228.1m for the year. The company lost money in the previous year. Sales of LCD TVs were picked out as a high point.
