Still mulling whether or not to pick yourself up a PlayStation Vita? Obsessed with retro gaming titles? If you answered "yes" to both, you should probably start socking away a few extra coins, buster. YouTube user frwololo has just upped a video showcasing the Half Byte Loader running the Picodrive emulator on Sony's PS Vita -- the first major proof that this kind of wizardry is indeed a possibility. The nuts and bolts of how it happened are being kept under wraps for now, and he seems certain that Sony's inbuilt security will make the mod unusable as soon as it's released. That said, there's still a lot of hope to be found in the clip just after the break, and c'mon -- who doesn't need a little hope to kick off a year where we're all supposed to perish?

Anonymous group 'targets personal data of company executives'
The online hacker network collectively known as Anonymous has threatened Sony executives for the company’s partial support of a controversial piracy bill in the US.
It is believed the group wants to publish personal details of Sony executives, though initially the plan was to “destroy” the PlayStation Network.
Sony previously claimed that Anonymous activists were suspects in the PlayStation Network hack; last year’s infamous data breach that affected some 77 million customer accounts and left Sony’s game network offline for six business weeks.
“It has come to the attention of Anonymous that Sony has chosen to stand by the Stop Online Piracy Act,” the hackers said in a video message posted on YouTube.
“This act will halt online businesses and restrict access to many sites for many users. Supporting SOPA is like trying to throw an entire company from off a bridge," the group continued.

Sony's PlayStation Vita saw a 78 per cent drop in sales figures in its first two weeks, from 324,859 sold in week one to 72,479 in week two.
This allowed older consoles, the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo 3DS, to actually outsell the new machine in week two, with the 3DS hitting 482,200 sales and the PSP 101,121.
The handheld launched in Japan just before Christmas on December 17 and the figures came from researcher Media Create.
Sony Japan itself has refused to comment on any sales figures.
By comparison the Nintendo 3DS sold 374,764 in its launch weekend in Japan, while the Vita's predecessor, PSPgo, sold 166,074.
It's still early days for the machine in Japan, and the drop in sales could be attributed to both the high price, which is set at 24,000 yen, to the lack of a Monster Hunter launch title, a key franchise for the console in the Japanese market.
Some are now speculating that the sales will force a price cut for the machine.
Elsewhere in the industry developers and publishers have remained sceptical about the console's chances in a market dominated by mobile and tablet devices, with Dr Mike Capps of Epic Games the most recent.
"I'm not sure how well it's going to be accepted in our Western market which is primarily where our games sell," he said in an exclusive interview.
"It's a really cool platform, but I have a phone, and it's really hard to compete with that. So I'm not sure if it will be successful or not."
The Vita will launch in the UK on February 22, priced at round £230.

Following lower than expected week two sales of Sony’s PlayStation Vita in Japan, some retailers have reportedly discounted the device in an effort to stimulate sales.
The more expensive 3G Vita model, in particular, is said to be selling in very low numbers.
GamesRadar reports that some retailers have now cut the price of the 3G unit by as much as 20 per cent.
The news comes following second week Vita sales of just 72k units. That’s down from the 325k shifted in its first week.
More importantly, it was outsold by all other current systems in Japan last week, including its predecessor the PSP. And it was trounced by 3DS, whose 482k unit sales helped it to its best ever week in Japan.
Also note that 3DS sold 210k units in its second week on sale.

Despite Amazon's claims to the contrary, Sony reps tell Joystiq that, no, the 3G model of the PlayStation Vita is not canceled in the US. Try and feign surprise! An IGN report from earlier today noted that the Amazon product details for the 3G model of the Vita listed it as "discontinued by manufacturer," but when contacted, Sony's senior director of corporate communication and social media Patrick Seybold immediately refuted the claims.
He told Joystiq flat out, "This is not true," and said that Sony will be connecting with its Amazon contacts to figure out what's up. Both the 3G and non-3G versions of the PlayStation Vita launch in North America on February 22, with a 3G "First Edition" bundle preceding them both by a week.

For most Battlefield 3 players, the huge number of weapon-mounted accessories are little more than filler between the obvious handful of choices that offer the best, effective results. The game's core gameplay designer, Alan Kertz, has picked up on that state and taken to Reddit to solicit advice for tweaking BF3's various gun augmentations.
"I'm not promising this will go live, and I'm not promising there will be an update, I'm looking for feedback and a discussion," Kurtz writes, carefully requesting feedback while trying not to overpromise. He says that the goal in said request is to "focus on improving the under performing and under used attachments," but also to identify how to nerf the most powerful attachments. The creator of Disaster Report 4, Kazuma Kujo, may have suffered a small setback when his game was canceled following the earthquake in Japan last year. But it hasn't turned him off of game development for good: he reports via Twitter that his new studio at developer Granzella is hard at work on a new titlefor both the PS3 and the PS Vita.
Kujo says that the game will be downloadable, though the PSP isn't planned to be supported at this time. It's a completely original IP, he says, but wouldn't tell Twitter followers in what genre it would be.
Granzella is working on at least two titles for the PS3 and the Vita, and this is presumably one of them. Kujo also says he'd like to make a war strategy game at some point, similar to the old R-Type Tactics games, and that he knows followers are looking for a Steambot Chronicles sequel in the future as well. Let's just hope production for all of these goes a little smoother than last time.

If you're the sort to spend actual money on clothes and an apartment for a virtual (mis)representation of yourself, this month is a good time to do that on PlayStation Home.
Sony's virtual social world will be hosting January Sales all this month following brief downtime maintenance tomorrow morning.Servers will go offline on Thursday 5th January from 8AM GMT, and when they come back on you'll be able to snap up anything from a new apartment, or a companion, to some furniture or a new outfit for your avatar for as much as 50% off the normal price.
To browse discounted items just head over to the star in Home Square or check out the Shop category on the PS Home Navigator before the end of January.
This week's update also sees the release of the Red Bull House of Skate, a personal space that includes "breathtaking views, flatscreen TVs, a swanky hot tub and Red Bull Skateboarding - an adrenaline soaked game that you won't find anywhere else".
More details on the PS Blog.

HD remakes of arcade shooters The House Of The Dead 3 and 4are headed exclusively to PlayStation Network, Sega has announced.
The House Of The Dead 3 will be released on February 7, to be followed by The House Of The Dead 4 in the spring. Both games have been updated with HD graphics, with Trophies and support for PS3 motion controller PlayStation Move.
Sega Of America senior VP of digital business Haruki Satomi said: "The House Of The Dead has always been one of Sega's most popular series, and over the years we have worked hard to bring that full arcade experience to console owners.
"The abilities of the PS3, as well as PlayStation Move, have let us get closer than ever before."
HOTD 3 was released in arcades in 2002, and was later ported to Xbox, PC and Wii. 2005's The House Of The Dead 4, however, has never been released for home consoles.

Sales of the PlayStation Vita have fallen below 50k during its third week on the market.
Eurogamer reports that Sony’s new handheld shifted 42,648 units during its second full week on sale.
Vita shifted 325k units in its opening weekend, only for sales to plummet to 72k during the following week. To make matters worse,Vita was outsold by PSP for the second week in a row in the territory.
By contrast, the market was once again bossed by 3DS, which sold 197,592 units. That’s down on last week’s record-breaking 482k sales.
The 3DS dominated the software market, too, claiming five of the country’s Top Ten titles. 13 of the Top 15 charts titles were for Nintendo machines.
Two Vita games made it into the Top 30 – Hot Shots Golf in 28th and Uncharted: Golden Abyss in 29th.

Sony's second Android tablet intrigued us. We're always willing to give another form factor a try and in the Tablet P (£500), we certainly had that. While the Tablet S's wedge profile stood it out a little from the rest of the prone slabs, the P piqued our interest with an unusual clamshell form factor. Once the two 5.5-inch screens are folded together, the tablet has a pretty tiny footprint and just about fits into a jacket pocket. It's the third PlayStation-certified device, arriving proudly emblazoned with the four symbol trademark, and a second screen capable of doubling-up as both a controller for games or as a laptop-style keyboard. However, those twin screens require some not-so cosmetic adjustments to the Honeycomb experience we're used to and this is where we're most interested in seeing how Sony fared. Is the unique design implemented well enough? How does it fare as a games machine? Can a clamshell pull potential tablet buyers away from the iPad and a legion of sameish Android tablets? Crack open our review to find the answer to those questions and much more.

New report claims that all three next gen systems will take stage at LA extravaganza
Sony is planning to rock the industry by announcing PlayStation 4 plans in just a matter of months, a new report has revealed.
In a highly unexpected move, Sony executives will head to Los Angeles in June to discuss their next home console at E3, within days of Microsoft doing the same.
This week’s MCV magazine has splashed on its front page “Biggest E3 ever will reveal new consoles”, claiming that Microsoft too will unveil its next generation system at the industry event.
In October last year, Develop revealed that several Sony studios had begun prototyping early PlayStation 4 projects. One month later, PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryanadmitted it would be “undesirable” for the PlayStation 4 to launch later than its rivals.
MCV now claims that Sony has sent the message to third-parties that it will not be left behind this time.

January 7th, 2012, 00:54 Posted By: wraggster
Could a rental or hire-purchase model help secure a future for dedicated gaming handhelds like the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS?
It's an idea floated by Frontier Developments' David Braben, Codemasters' Jamie MacDonald, Boss Alien's Jason Avent, and Simon Oliver of Hand Circus in a roundtable discussion withGamesIndustry.biz.
One of the challenges the Vita faces is that, beyond the lower prices of smartphone games, mobile hardware is generally acquired through a hire-purchase model, effectively making it free to the consumer.
However, this approach - a common retail strategy for numerous consumer electronics devices - hasn't been attempted with game consoles.
"Maybe that's an idea," Avent said. "You get your PS Vita and pay a subscription for it and you get usage of one or two games that you can swap in and swap out.
"You join a club for £15 a month and you get really top games for that. And you get hire of the hardware. And then it's much more like an app store where you have to get your games through Sony."
In Braben's view, this could be a "workable business model" for handheld consoles, not least because it would open up new shelf-space with high-street mobile phone retailers.
"It would be a bit like a Sky subscription with telephone, internet and TV in one," Avent continued, "but you could have a small mobile phone with a contract, and then it's packaged up with the Vita and a subscription to games"
This view is consistent with comments made by industry analyst Nick Parker at the London Games Conference last month, in which he outlined the possibility of retailers like GAME eventually selling contracts and not hardware.
"I sat down with Ian Shepherd a couple of weeks ago and his vision is seeing GAME like Carphone Warehouse, whereby Carphone Warehouse doesn't actually sell anything at all, no product, no hardware, it just sells contracts," Parker said.
"And they see themselves doing the same thing - selling contracts for OnLive or any other technology provider or source of games and then hardware can eventually be offered for free."
The notion that the market for handheld consoles has been fatally disrupted by the growth of mobile gaming has been widely discussed over the last 12 months.
Slow sales of the 3DS only improved after Nintendo slashed the price by as much as 40 per cent, whilethe PlayStation Vita's performance has declined sharply since it launched in Japan before Christmas - it is currently 4th in the hardware charts, one place behind its own predecessor, the PSP.

Netflix still isn't offering a firm date for its launch in the UK, but it looks like some of the final pieces are starting to fall into place. The company's PlayStation 3 app is now hitting consoles across the pond, displaying the message you see above when it's launched. Unfortunately, that's about all we have to go on at the moment, but PS3 users can now at least rest assured that they won't have any waiting to do when Netflix does finally flip the switch -- one more shot after the break.

Sony will also "show" its new console - presumably PlayStation 4 - at the annual E3 expo this summer, a foil-wrap-fresh report has claimed.UK trade website MCV provided no further information. The tip apparently came from an "exemplary" and "ultra high level" source."Obviously we can't reveal our sources," wrote MCV writer Ben Parfitt on Twitter. "But you have my personal word on this - the source is exemplary, 100 per cent concrete, ultra high level."He added: "Really, really wish I could name him/her/them/it but obviously cannot."Sony UK told Eurogamer this morning that "we don't comment on rumour and speculation".Microsoft is widely expected to show a new Xbox - or two - at E3 2012. And an announcement may come even earlier - as soon as next week at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES).Has knowledge of a new Xbox forced Sony's hand - a company that has been outspoken about its long-term, 10-year plan for PlayStation 3?Jim Ryan, PlayStation Euro boss, suggested so - telling Eurogamer in November that it would be "undesirable" to concede another head start advantage to Microsoft with the next generation of consoles. What an odd, waterfall-like situation it would be if Sony had rushed to dilute Microsoft's thunder - only to discover that Microsoft had itself rushed to dilute Nintendo's Wii U thunder. What fantastic machinery we'd be sold as a result. If this report does turn out to be true, Sony may have little more to show of PS4 at E3 than target renders and a basic strategy - an announcement rather than a reveal, if you like. Cast your mind back to E3 2005 and the infamous target render footage of on PS3 for an idea of what to expect.Microsoft is expected to launch the next generation Xbox around Christmas 2013. A PS4 may be further off, judging by Sony's recent commitment to The Last of Us - a likely 2013 PS3 exclusive built by Uncharted maker Naughty Dog.

A so-called official US retailer pamphlet for Sony's upcoming Vita has a few interesting titles in its upcoming games lists.
Final Fantasy X and Lord of Apocalypse are yet to be confirmed for a US release, but this pamphlet has them down as a dead cert.Even more interestingly, it lists Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, which has been rumoured but not yet confirmed for Vita.
Of course, it could just be a mistake, but it certainly raises an eyebrow.
Vita is out in US and UK on February 22

Yet another report pointing to an imminent PlayStation 4 reveal is up in lights this morning, claiming that Sony Computer Entertainment is going to follow up its 2006 PS3 launch with a brand new console, to be shown for the first time at this year's E3.
What's Sony's official word on PlayStation 4? Well, as of a month ago, it denied all knowledge of the rumoured next-generation machine. In an upcoming interview on the development of the PlayStation Vita (read our PS Vita review), we quizzed Sony's Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida on the PlayStation 4 and he laughed: "I don't know what you are talking about."
The man ultimately in charge of Sony's in-house development added, "We are still very excited by the PlayStation 3."
The other thing Sony's excited about of course is its impressive new handheld, which hits North America and Europe next month.
In the interview, Yoshida talks frankly about how Sony has changed its development processes to ensure a steady supply of games for Vita, hints at unseen elements of its Cross-play and Augmented Reality features, and discusses how the software teams got involved in its design. It's a good one.
Late last year, SCEE president Jim Ryan stated that allowing Microsoft to get the jump on the PlayStation 4 with its next console would be an "undesirable" situation for Sony.
Look out for the full interview with Sony's Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, in the next few days.

[Alex] was digging through his closet and came upon an old PS2 game pad for Dance Dance Revolution. He hated the idea of throwing it out just slightly more than the idea of playing DDR again, so he decided to find a way to reuse it.
He was a big fan of the game Simon (aka Genius) as a kid and thought that the DDR pad would make a novel interface for the classic game. Using the PS2XLib by [Bill Porter], which allows an Arduino to easily communicate with a PS2 controller, [Alex] put his Simon replica together in no time flat.
He painted an empty ice cream container with the classic Simon colors, installing a small LED under each quadrant, then wrote the game’s code.
As you can see in the video below, his version of the game works nicely, and forces you to actually get up and move a bit, which we like.

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/12/29/p...rity-concerns/
A few days ago I posted my concerns about the “Content Manager” tool, a tool that is compulsory to install and use if you want to copy files from and to your vita. Some people said I was paranoid (see my answer to that at the end of the article), and others shared my concerns and started digging. Interestingly enough, that article gathered almost as much attention as my much more spectacular (in my opinion) video of a Megadrive emulator running on the vita.
Some sites took my words out of context and said that I had proof Sony is spying on us when we copy files. This is not true, I don’t have any proof, just lots of concerns. Because of that I decided to call Sony’s customer service in order to get more information. Read along.
At least we can copy media files (music, pictures, movies) without an internet connection
First of all, a piece of relatively good news: some users on French site psvitagen mentioned that it is possible to copy Movies and Music without being connected to the internet, through the dedicated “Music” and “Movie” sections of the vita. I confirmed this is true, so movies, music and pictures can still be copied to the vita even without an internet connection. The internet connection is however, as far as I can tell, required to copy anything else, which, given the limited possibilities of the vita, basically means PSP/Vita games and/or savedata.
The content manager cannot be run if the PC client is not connected to the internet. why is that?
In theory and from what I saw so far, the internet connection is probably used for two things: check for new versions of the firmware (an update was enforced on me if I wanted to keep using the content manager 2 days ago), and possibly do some DRM verifications. That’s the theory, and is somewhat confirmed by some early investigations of the binary by dev Hykem. So, when you copy it to your vita, Sony checks that your Vita game or your Sony-purchased movie is actually “ok” to play on your vita, to make sure you didn’t steal it or copied it from a friend’s computer. Fair enough (although I would question why this check needs to be done there, rather than directly on the vita). But what happens for content that does not require any Sony drm check is my concern. Even though it’s possible to copy them without an internet connection, does Sony gather any information on my music, my pictures, or my movies (and how about my games savedata, which do require the internet connection while being transferred) ? Do they collect filenames, id3 tag, or exif information? Probably not, but more transparency on the subject would definitely be welcome. This is not about hacking here, this is about sending private information to a company that has proven regularly that they cannot be trusted with our data.
So ,full of concerns, I decided to call Sony’s customer service today (actually my wife did it for me…). The person we talked to, as expected, wasn’t a technical person and therefore had close to no information on this. She was aware that an internet connection is required, and mentioned to us that this is written on the manual. We explained that we knew that, and that we have an internet connection (it usually takes time when calling a customer service to explain that you don’t have a technical problem using the software, but an ethical one) , but we’d like to disconnect it when it is not necessary, because we don’t see the point in being connected to Sony’s server when we transfer files between two pieces of hardware we own (at which point my wife added: “especially given what happened to your company recently, we’re a bit concerned about our private information“. Hehe, that’s why I love her ). Understanding our concern the person at the customer service contacted somebody more technical to get more information on the subject. She then came back to us and told us this was in place to make sure that the computer running the content manager is correctly “associated” to the Vita. She didn’t have any technical details to share about the firmware upgrade or the DRM verifications, but she guaranteed us that no personal data was being transferred. She also gave us her name (which I won’t share here) in case we have more questions on the subject (but don’t ask me to call them more, first it’s not a free call, and second I already felt super bad to have my wife spend 30 boring minutes on the phone for me because of my new toy)
(one thing I’d like to say is that every time I contacted Sony’s customer service, their answers were fairly fast and accurate. They usually give me bad news, but they’re doing their best to help. The only time they were completely wrong was when my PSP 1000 stopped accepting connecting to Media Go. They told me it was because the PSP was a Japanese PSP, and I was trying to connect to the European store. I knew this wasn’t true since I had no problem doing the exact same thing with two other PSPs. The real cause was probably that Sony had banned my console for some reason. Anwyays overall thumbs up for the efficiency of the customer service)
So, that’s the official answer, but I’m sure some of us will pass the PC parts of the Content Manager through their microscopes to confirm if this is true. But at least now I have some official information from Sony, which is, in a way, positive. Nevertheless, it does not statisfy my curiosity on some of the files found by Hykem, (such as Mp3Promoter.suprx, png_promoter.suprx, etc…) so I’m sure many people will want to learn more about this thing.
Oh, Before I go…
Note: don’t read the section below if you don’t like me when I rant, I know some of you don’t like me when I do that (Spare me the “why do you buy Sony products in the first place?” types of comments if possible, as that’s not the point)
A personal note about why I’m doing all of this, and a message to haters. There’s something interesting about fanboys, no matter how much you show them the truth and give them verifiable proof about it, they’ll always find excuses to justify the illegal behavior of their favorite company. A few days ago I started investigating the insides of the PS Vita. I got HBL to run on it, and was able to run PSP homebrews on the vita. Fanboys told me I would kill the vita because of piracy. I also raised privacy concerns about the vita “content manager”, a tool that is compulsory to use if you want to transfer some files from and to your vita, and requires you to be constantly connected to the internet while doing so. Again, Sony fanboys told me Sony would never spy on their users, or went Eric Shmidt on me, telling me that Sony probably has good reasons to spy on me in the first place.
Well guess what, champions: my work on the PSP was never used in any way to pirate Sony’s content, because it is not technically doable to do such a thing with HBL. And telling me that Sony would never do something illegal to their users is completely forgetting that they intentionally did so a few years ago with their infamous rootkit.
There’s no historical record of me being a bad guy, I was never sued or sent to jail in my life, while Sony has proven several times to engage in illegal or barely legal activities (see the rootkit case, or the Sony VS Universal studios case), but yet in Sony fanboys’ heads, I am the one with a suspicious behavior. Next time you comment on my work, just get your facts straight, not all hackers are promoting piracy, and my work (HBL) cannot be used to pirate games. I won’t pretend I’m a fighter of freedom or anything, I do this mostly for fun, but I take extra care to do things that are legal, or at least not ethically questionable. The same cannot be said for Sony, so it is perfectly legit to have doubts about the tools they make me install on my machine, even if in the end the suspicions were wrong.
Sony lost their “presumption of innocence” rights years ago, I’d rather assume they’re guilty first, than feel sorry for myself later when the contents of my hard drives get leaked from Sony’s servers by some black hat hacker.

It’s finally here! This is still a beta, so we expect to fix a few bugs for the final 0.17 release, but if you want to help us smash bugs, feel free to give it a try. This version of Wagic is open to all people who are registered at the Wagic forums (registration is free, and note that it’s not the same forum as /talk, so if you own an account at /talk you might need to create a new account).
Wagic is an heroic-fantasy card game, supporting more than 15’000 cards (more than 8’600 unique cards). The beta is currently available for the PSP, Windows, and Android. Yup, Android joins the Wagic fun. If you were one of the early testers of the Android version, you’ll probably enjoy some of the improvements of this version, although I’d like to mention that the android version is still work in progress, and not yet at the level of quality one could expect (in particular, we haven’t worked a lot on the shop and the deck editor yet).
Besides the Android compatibility (which is a major achievement!), this version brings tons of new cards (including the long awaited Innistrad), a new support for zip files (something that, as a user, you might not see, but will make updates, mods, and a pile of stuff much easier to handle), an experimental “undo” feature (ok, please don’t hurt me too much, but I think that feature doesn’t work on the PSP yet…feel free to report it as a bug), and a new “progress bar” on the main screen that will show you how much you still have to play in order to beat the game (as in “unlocking everything”).
I expect the beta to last no more than a week before a full release, unless major issues are found.

Mike at exophase is showcasing yet another Hello World running in the PSP emulator of the Vita.
Most likely this is not the same as Teck4′s exploit, but who knows, I remember a few months ago that several hackers found the sukkiri demo exploit exactly at the same time…
The developer behind this exploit wants to remain anonymous. So, to that John Doe, or to Mike, if you guys read this, by all means keep this one under wraps. There are definitely many game exploits on the PSP, probably more than we could wish for, but if you can spare this one for your own research, that’s great!

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/01/01/t...ita-is-doomed/
A year and a half ago when I got Doom for PSP to run on the PSP Go, website hackaday noticed it and said “[being able to run Doom is] a prerequisite for any cracked device”. Some people try to run Linux on their hardware at all cost, I prefer Doom. Today I was able to tweak HBL a bit on the PS Vita to get Doom to run on it.
We are aware that this hack will be easily patched by Sony, but we still plan to publicly release it some time soon after the US/EU release of the Vita (we still have to port HBL to the EU/US versions of the game but that shouldn’t have any difficulty). I also know that some devs are already working on solutions to make it “easier” for people who would want to stay on a low firmware. I wouldn’t be surprised to see unofficial patches to the CMA, to prevent it from connecting to the net.
Let me use the opportunity to remind that HBL is a collective work, it is open source (anybody with a PSVita, a PSP, and a game exploit in their possession could do what I’m doing here!), and I want to especially thank the major work of m0skit0 (the creator of HBL) and JJS (who brought it to the level it is today). I also want to remind pirates around us that HBL does not technically allow people to run backups, PSP or Vita. (My opinion on the subject does not matter, it is a technical limitation of the tool, and has nothing to do with ethics.)

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/01/01/o...-the-internet/
A few days ago we discovered that it is compulsory to be connected to the internet in order to use the Content Manager Assistant. Although I found out later that this tool is not necessary for media files, it is still compulsory to use it if you want to copy games and savedata from and to your PS Vita. Having to be connected to the internet while you copy files between two pieces of hardware you own is inconvenient, unsafe, and technically not necessary. It is therefore an unnecessary “feature” of the Content Manager Assistant that was put here by Sony for no other good reason than force people to update their console to the latest firmware on a regular basis.
Famous PSP Dev Virtuous Flame released today a tool called OpenCMA, which is basically a patch to the Content Manager Assistant (on the PC side) that will prevent it to connect to the internet.
I tested it myself, and it works fine, although Virtuous Flame told me it might still be unstable. It is not yet guaranteed that this tool will be enough to prevent the console from upgrading its firmware without your consent, but hopefully this should help.
Not the greatest example since I don't have any application, but trust me, it works. The normal CMA would stop me before that screen, asking me "please connect your PC to the internet"
As a reminder, if you want to keep using the CMA normally, a firmware upgrade is compulsory every time Sony says so. Since every firmware upgrade comes with a new license and a new Terms and Conditions contract, it means that Sony can progressively change the contract you agreed with when you initially bought your vita, and entirely lock you out of some core features (such as backing up the games you bought and your save data to your PC) if you refuse the new contract. The OtherOS lawsuit in the US has also shown that Sony can remove any feature they want from the system you bought, and not be afraid of any legal consequences. This patch is also useful for these kind of unfair situations.

via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/01/02/h...ogress-report/
A quick report: I’m making some progress on porting HBL to the Vita. Although I’m sad to say that I can’t get syscall estimation to work, I got some major homebrews such as Doom to run already, so overall I think it’s in an acceptable shape. Because it is roughly stable now, today I focused on porting HBL to the EU version of the exploited game (I was working – obviously – on the Japanese version of the game so far). This went smoothly and I can confirm HBL runs fine on the EU version of the game, although of course I could only test on a PSP, not on a Vita.
I used the opportunity to refresh my two guides, how to write a binary loader and how to port HBL. The guides are now simplified, and the binary loader tutorial now has download links to the tools used in the examples.
Writing the first “usable” version of HBL for the patapon exploit took several developers and about 4 months. Thanks to the portability of HBL, bringing it to Teck4′s exploit took me only a few days. Adapting that to the EU version took a couple hours (including porting the exploit itself), so I am confident for the US version.

Japanese site emuonpsp reported today that a combination of keys was found in the settings menu to display some hidden information about the firmware installed on your Playstation vita.
This menu contains information about the system build, repository, revision,… doesn’t look like it’s super useful information for now, but still interesting I guess.
The combination to get this menu to show requires practice but I could confirm it works on my vita (Firmware 1.510).
1.Go to Settings > System > System Information
2.Press simultaneously RTrigger + LTrigger + DPad Left + Square for a few seconds
3.Release those buttons then immediately press the start button
4.tadaa, additional information shows up

PlayStation 3 exclusive Twisted Metal will arrive in the UK on February 17th, Sony has told MCV.
The destructive driving game is the latest in Sony’s long-running franchise, which first arrived on the original PlayStation in 1995.
The new Twisted Metal was previously scheduled to arrive in October last year but was delayed to February. The US version arrives on February 14th.
Buyers of the first batch of copies on PS3 will also receive a voucher that allows them to download the 2001 PS2 game Twisted Metal Black.
February is shaping up to be a strong month for new releases, with Soul Calibur V, SSX, Catherine, The Darkness II, Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, Final Fantasy XIII-2, PlayStation Vita and now Twisted Metal due, among others.

The marketing push for PS Vita will get the device into gamers’ hands next week – and it’s part of the firm’s biggest campaign yet.
An experiential tour starts on January 12th in Manchester, with the Vita Rooms visiting Glasgow and London during January and February afterwards.
It’s just one part of a big hardware launch campaign that includes aheavyweight TV, print, outdoor and retail presence and digital elements.
PS Vita launches on February 22nd in the UK and the rest of Europe, plus Australia and North America. It debuted in Japan three weeks ago and has sold over 400,000 units already.
The PSP successor ups the ante in the tech stakes featuring a raft of functionality including a five-inch OLED touch screen, dual analog sticks, front and rear cameras, a touch-sensitive panel on the reverse and plenty of on-board digital services. The hardware is available as a WiFi-only version and a 3G and WiFi model, with Vodafone on board as preferred 3G supplier in Europe.
“Vita delivers an uncompromised gaming experience on a portable device, for the first time,” UK marketing manager Mark Bowles told MCV. “With a long list of impressive features, we’re confident consumers will be incredibly excited by the latest addition to the PlayStation family.”
He added: “The PS Vita launch will be supported by the biggest campaign we’ve ever executed, and this level of activity will continue throughout 2012, reflecting our confidence in, and commitment to the platform long term.
“Our campaign will target gamers primarily, but also the new generation of tech enthusiasts and entertainment consumers who are used to playing games on their smartphones or tablets. What sets Vita apart is its ability to deliver PS3 quality gaming, in addition to the range of globally recognised triple-A software titles, which simply isn’t possible or aren’t available on any other existing portable.
“In terms of media focus, due to the connected nature of the Vita and the behaviour of our target audience, our campaign will have a strong digital backbone, supporting a heavyweight TV, press, outdoor and retail presence.
“Finally, one thing we learnt early on is that the best way to understand PS Vita, is to get hands-on experience with it. This is why we’re investing heavily in an experiential tour.”
33 games form the launch line-up of games, which include key Sony franchises such as Uncharted and WipEout, plus third-party hits like FIFA.
Bowles added: “The key to any successful console launch is software, and we believe the launch line-up for the PS Vita is the strongest of any gaming platform. Consumers will quite literally be spoilt for choice in terms of the depth and breadth of gaming experiences on offer.”
He added that Sony is certain that a good quantity of quality games will continue after launch.
“Lessons learnt from the PSP ensure that this commitment to delivering triple-A quality titles will continue unabated, with Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, Assassin’s Creed and Call of Duty just a few of the big name titles and franchises coming to the PS Vita over the year ahead.
“We’re naturally very excited at the prospect of getting the hardware into the hands of gamers, so they can see for themselves, what makes Vita so special.”

The 3G PlayStation Vita is finally coming to the US in February, courtesy of AT&T. Sony's latest handheld gaming platform is being billed by the carrier as a product that is "going to change the gaming industry. Period." Those are mighty bold words but, as we already learned, it's a mighty bold device. You'll be able to sign up for one of two data plans directly from the device -- $15 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB. Of course, that's not terribly surprising since those are the standard contract-free data plans available from Ma-Bell. You'll be able get your 3G Vita fix starting February 22nd. PR is after the break

When Sony gets hardware right, Sony really gets hardware right. Recent years have brought us a torrent of sleek, weighty iDevices from Apple, all unibody aluminium and smoky black glass, so perhaps it's timely for us to get a reminder of just how great Sony's industrial design is when it's firing on all cylinders. PlayStation Vita just feels right, in a way that few other hardware companies ever quite manage. It's got enough weight to feel expensive and yet it's perfectly balanced in your hands. The sense of holding something powerful, something premium, is your first impression of Vita. Sony does it again.Or so you'd think. Personally, I think Vita is a wonderful piece of kit; Tom is head over heels in love with it. The nation of Japan, on the other hand, seems rather less enamoured. The tale of PS Vita's launch hasn't been the triumphant epic Sony wanted - instead, it's become a miserable little tale of trickling sales and an unconvinced public. Has Sony really miscalculated? Or is the gaming press, much of which has become so accustomed to putting the boot into Sony in recent years, exaggerating the situation?Taken in isolation, the figures don't look great. Sony planned to ship 700,000 units of Vita for the Japanese launch period (that doesn't necessarily mean day one, and we're not sure how quickly those units actually made it onto shelves), but by New Year's Day the company had only sold through around 440,000 of those to customers. This isn't quite the embarrassing level of over-supply that the PS3 saw at launch - but given that half a million of those consoles are special editions of the 3G model with a hundred hours of 3G data access thrown in for free, which Sony expected to be snapped up very rapidly, it's certainly not a great start. If we're looking for some context, the obvious place to look would be the launch of the original PSP - but that's not actually a very useful comparison, as it turns out. Vita sold about 325,000 units in its launch weekend, compared to 200,000 units of the PSP sold at launch in December 2004. That was a totally different kettle of fish, though - Sony only shipped 200,000 units of the PSP for the Japanese launch, and sold every single one it shipped. It's impossible to say how many more would have sold had there been more stock available, but it's worth remembering that the European launch of PSP ended up being delayed until the following September due to problems meeting demand in Japan and North America. With 160,000 units of Vita unsold in Japan as of January 1st, that seems unlikely to happen this time around.

January 10th, 2012, 01:45 Posted By: wraggster
Sony isn't contemplating talking about "anything to do with future console iterations at this point", Sony Computer Entertainment president, Andrew House has said.
Ahead of much PS4 speculation over the past week, House told CVG at Japan's December PS Vita launch that the electronics firm is "just entering into this great period for PS3".He said: "I don't think we're contemplating talking about anything to do with future console iterations at this point.
"But one thing I always point to is that, somewhat in contrast to our major competitors, we have, particularly with PS2, managed the length of the lifecycle and ensured its profitability for our publishing partners for a much longer lifecycle than has been true of the competition.
"I would say that's in part because of the global reach of Sony from a distribution, infrastructure and marketing standpoint. Because in many markets, we work alongside really long-standing, established operations in electronics, we're able to migrate out into rather more emerging markets much more easily and sustainably than is possible for some of our competitors."
Pushed further on his thoughts on the next generation, the affable and well-spoken exec said that, in his view, there are still "significant barriers" for game streaming on HD consoles, and physical media is still "the easiest consumer experience".
"There are clearly a lot of opportunities [in the future] with regard to business models around games, all of which we're interested in and are exploring," House said.
"Some of our group companies already have a stake in free-to-play models and so on. But in my view, for the very highest quality high-definition console gaming, I think there are still some significant barriers to streaming solutions.
"Whether it's in mobile or cloud-based services, there are opportunities there for more casual content and in our case potentially for legacy content, which we would definitely like to explore. But I think we are a way away from being able to deliver the full-on top-end experience like that.
"The scale of data involved and issues around latency do mean that, at least for now, the easiest consumer experience is from physical media. Although, having said that, we're starting to see some growth in the number or proportion of our consumers that want to access their content via download. But I think it's still pretty small."
The Sony exec's comments arrive days after MCV's claims that both PS4 and Xbox 720 will be shown at this year's E3.
Quizzed recently by CVG on the PlayStation 4, Sony's Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida laughed: "I don't know what you are talking about."

Sony is sticking to its guns and insists there will be no talk of what it plans to do beyond PS3 at June's E3.
Speaking in response to MCV’s story last week that senior publishing execs are expecting new console reveals at the Los Angeles trade show, one of the format-holder's most senior execs has said "we are not making any announcements at E3".
MCV reported word from sources that Sony was expected to offer some glimpse at its future console plans to counter the assumed unveiling of Microsoft's 360 successor.

The PlayStation 4 could feature super-hi-res 8k output, haptic touch feedback and Kinect-like sensor functionality, according to SCE’s executive VP of technology and CTO Masaaki Tsuruta.
Speaking at the International Electron Devices Meeting in Washington DC in December, he said Sony’s focus for its next gaming projects are focused very much on advanced semiconductor research.
Though Tsuruta didn’t draw a clear distinction between technologies Sony intends to implement in its next PlayStation and those it is only experimenting with, a number of directions were hinted at that will define what PS4 has to offer.
Super HD displays seem to be one focus for the machine, with resolutions between 4k and 8k with frame rates upwards of 300k, while new silicon designs paving the way for low latency response.
One of the most interesting points regarded haptic technology. E&T reports that the new tech is able to replicate sensations, taking feedback way beyond simple vibration and resistance.
This, Tsuruta explained, automatically leads to the device increasing the amount of data it senses from players. The aim is to have the device read a user’s vital signs, body heat and facial expressions – reading emotions being the ultimate goal.
MCV revealed last week that Sony intends to reveal the first details about its next PlayStation at E3 later this year, though Sony has dismissed the rumours.

If the PlayStation 3 marked your introduction to the Killzone series, it looks like you'll finally get a shot at trying the original. After spotting a listing for the firstKillzone on the ESRB, Game Informer has confirmed with Sony that the 2005 Helghast extermination simulator is indeed headed to PSN. The title will be a port of the original PlayStation 2 Killzone, so we wouldn't expect any extra bells or whistles.
Killzone will hit PSN on January 24 for $10.

As part of a new promotion, Taco Bell has announced a sweepstakes offering three ways to win a PlayStation Vita. The good news: only one of the three involves eating at Taco Bell. From January 26 through March 11, Taco Bell will serve a crispy, cheesy PlayStation Vita to a lucky winner every 15 minutes(!). Winners will receive a 3G Vita, Little Deviants, a 4GB memory card and their choice of ModNation Racers, MLB 12 the Show, or LittleBigPlanet.
You can find out if you're a winner either by buying a "$5 Buck Box" (yes, with the redundant dollar sign and "buck") and entering a code from the box online, playing the "Reality Fighters Dojo" minigame found within the Taco Bell mobile app, or submitting a photo or video online in which you debase yourself by "boasting" about what you'd do for a Vita.

One of the three main platform holders doesn't have the stomach for the next generation of console hardware, according to a top exec at game streaming service Gaikai. As reported by IndustryGamers, chief product officer Nanea Reeves told an audience at CES in Las Vegas today that she anticipates that one of the main platform holders will decide not to launch another round of hardware."Not all of the current console makers will have one more generation. That will be the big news at E3," she said. With Nintendo already prepping the Wii U, that leaves either Sony or Microsoft. Grab yourself a pinch of salt and place your bets.

New SCE UK boss Fergal Gara has admitted that the business will have to sharpen up under his stewardship.
“What I find at SCE is that we’ve lots of passionate and committed people. But there’s definitely an opportunity to up the pace of our competitiveness,” Gara told MCV.
“We still have a bit of a hangover – at least in the UK company – from the days of being market dominant. I don’t think we are as sharp as we can be. There’s room for improvement there.
“So it’s not change everything, but it is turn up the dial, and learn to compete as I have experience doing myself.”
Gara referred to his time in the cut-throat world of supermarkets, and how he intends to carry some of that work ethic over to Sony.
“The UK retail environment is renowned for being the most competitive in the world. And if you take the supermarket end of that, that’s as blood bath as you can get,” he added.
“One thing you gain from that market is a competitiveness; you have to have it, plus an immediacy. You don’t hang around and wait to react. I am used to daily numbers – if not hourly numbers – so if we were launching a big gaming title we would be on top of the numbers by the hour.
“We’d be the first in with a re-order. And that’s really exciting.”
Read the full interview with Gara in this week's issue of MCV or on the website tomorrow.

Though the PlayStation Vita is still suffering from low sales in Japan, Sony has been encouraged by the improved fortunes of the 3DS.
That’s according to SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who told MCV that Nintendo’s success bodes well for the portable market.
“One of the encouraging things about 3DS’ sales performance at Christmas is that it is confounding the naysayers who say that there is no room in the market for a dedicated handheld gaming device,” he told MCV in an exclusive interview.
“And to that extent we were encouraged by how 3DS did over the last month.
But doesn’t the appetite for 3DS pose a danger to Vita? Apparently not.
“There are two distinct markets,” Ryan added.
“The quality, the immersiveness, the richness of the experience that we believe we are going to offer on Vita, way exceeds anything that we believe to be available on any smartphone.”
You can read MCV’s full interview with Ryan in tomorrow’s issue (which should be with subscribers today) or read the full thing online tomorrow.

Sony's new handheld has maintained a steady level of sales in its fourth week on the market, but Nintendo has widened the gap.
Vita sold 42,915 units in the week ending January 8th, a slight improvements on the 42,468 units from the previous week. Sony claims 500,000 units have been sold to date, according toGamasutra.
However, 3DS weekly sales have leapt from 197,952 to 240,819. The Nintendo handheld has shifted 4.5m units in Japan since its launch last February.
Unsurprisingly the software charts were also dominated by 3DS. Mario Kart 7, Super Mario 3D Land, Monster Hunter 3G and Inazuma Eleven Go: Shine/Dark took to the top four positions.
No Vita titles made it into the Top 20, although Media Create only tracks physical retail sales so the number of titles purchased through the handheld itself is unknown.

If you surprised yourself by becoming a superfan of Dark Souls, here's the next ... totally different From Software-developed game for you to try. Publisher Namco Bandai announced that mech action game Armored Core 5 will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360 in North America on March 20 -- which just happens to be five years to the day after Armored Core 4 came out. A European release will follow on March 23.
If you pre-order from GameStop, you'll get some extra stuff with which to outfit your giant robot: the "Heavy Assault Pack," which comes with extra weapons and parts. This stuff can be used in the competitive multiplayer, which would seem to give an advantage to GameStop buyers on release day. That hardly seems sporting.

Sony has conceded that sales of the PlayStation Move peripheral during 2011 could have been better in the UK.Speaking in an interview with MCV, Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara explained that the device has underperformed, but nonetheless has found a market."I'd say we have a solid foothold with [Move]. Could it, should it, have done more? I think so," he said, before adding that ensuring quality software for the add-on is key to its success going forward."It is the strength of the software that goes with it that is paramount. And we've had a widely different performance from the various Move titles. Sports Champions is by far the most successful, selling a couple of hundred thousand units, which is a healthy performance. But it does vary thereafter."So I'd say we are in the market, we have got a shout. Forthcoming titles are going to be important. We take some encouragement from things we can mention, such as Sorcery which is on the schedule, and other things that we know are bubbling under. It is a focus from a studio point-of-view to bring out stronger titles."SCE Europe boss Jim Ryan also chimed in, admitting that Sony's marketing message for Move hadn't been clear enough post launch."Across Europe, the middle part of 2011 was slower than we'd have liked," he admitted. There are a few things that we have got a lot more clear-minded about in terms of targeting the family, social markets, and not being all things to all men with Move."We were very energetic in our marketing, and the early signs are that that has paid off. Also our developers are making a step-change in their ability to do exciting things with Move software. And the fruits of that will be seen in 2012 and beyond."Earlier this week Sony announced that it sold 1.7 million Move units over the Christmas period.Microsoft hasn't been too forthcoming with sales of its competing Kinect device, though did announce this week that the peripheral has shipped 18 million units to retail since launch in November 2010.

Sony has said it isn't worried about early PS Vita hardware sales.
While the system sold 325,000 units in its debut week last month, the platform holder revealed on Tuesday that the figure had only grown to half a million by January 5.Nevertheless, Sony Computer Entertainment America director of hardware marketing John Koller told GameSpot sales were tracking to internal company forecasts.
"We're still in the first couple weeks, and we're trying to get as many units into market as possible," he said. "We're going to give it some time, but overall those numbers have been to forecast.
"If you look at the word-of-mouth factor, it's really strong because people are bringing it home and really enjoying it," he added. "That satisfaction rate is really high. But also in terms of when we funnel in additional hardware units, that'll dictate how many sales there are and how many sell through."
Earlier this week, European PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said it would be wrong to make forecasts about Vita's Western launch based on its start in Japan.
"One of the things we have learnt over a long period of time, is that whether it is PS1, PS2, PSP or PS3, it is dangerous to the point of impossible to take any experience from the Japanese market and try and extrapolate it, and propose upon what will happen in Europe or North America," he said.
"Not withstanding the fact that it is just way too early to make any conclusions. The markets are now just so different, I actually think they are diverging to a greater extent than they were different in the past - if that's even possible."

Sumioni: Demon Arts will see a release in US in Spring, publisher XSEED has confirmed.
And that's good news because it looks sweet. It's billed as an "ink-themed 2D action platformer", with a brush art look, Japanese stylization and touch screen controls reminiscent of Yoshi's Touch & Go on DS.Lots more details are through the source link below. Here's the US announcement trailer. Fingers crossed it's confirmed for Europe soon.

Peripheral company Nyko is, as usually, preparing to raid the market with its range of new peripherals of the Vita when it arrives next month, and here's one gadget that's particularly interesting.
The Power Grip looks on the surface like an ugly attempt to get a PlayStation controller feel out of the Vita, but it's also a battery extension pack.Nyko says the device will triple your battery life, which Sony estimates to be around three to five hours for gameplay. That's pretty good going.
And where many battery packs can be pricy, this one's $24.99 - throw-away money. And if you don't like the arms they can apparently be folded away behind the unit - which also makes for easy portability.
Could be a handy thing to have for those longer trips.

PlayStation Vita got its second post-release firmware update. The update takes the system from version 1.51 to version 1.52.
As with the previous update, this is just a small bug fix.
Sony did not say what exactly the update fixes. However, a number of Vita owners are saying via Twitter and blogs and so-forth that the update fixes a version 1.51 bug where the 3G system would not recognize your SIM card.

After the 2011 holiday spending frenzy, many folks may find themselves in a period of early 2012 belt-tightening. If you'd like to make those gaming dollars stretch a bit further, you might want to check out the PSN 12 for '12 sale, as in "12 games for 2012" (hence the apostrophe). The list includes plenty of favorites like PixelJunk SideScroller, Dungeon Defenders, Bloodrayne: Betrayal,Rochard, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition and many more.
From January 17 through 23, each game will be available for 30 percent off its usual price. Meanwhile, PlayStation Plus subscribers can nab any game on the list for a full 50 percent off.

Upcoming Dead Island DLC will let you experience the island paradise from the perspective of one of the bad guys. No, not a zombie -- the next DLC, coming January 31, focuses on human antagonist Ryder White. We're sure zombies will still be around.
You'll learn why he became such an unpleasant character in "several hours" of new story mode content, and you'll also find two new blueprints for new weapon mods. The North American release hits on January 31 for 800 MSP/
$9.99. The European release is set for February 1 for £7.99.

I just got contacted by Virtuous Flame who informed me that PS Vita update 1.52 is available (which is confirmed on the official site), and as for version 1.51 back in December, this update is compulsory if you want to use some services such as the PSN (which makes sense) or the possibility to copy files to your Vita with the Content Manager (which doesn’t).
Virtuous Flame was therefore able to confirm that his patches to the CMA (openCMA) allow him to keep using the CMA without having to upgrade. He noted that your console’s wifi must also be turned off, otherwise the console will ask you t update as well. If your console asks you to update to 1.52 and you don’t want to, turn its wifi off (plane mode), then reboot the console. also install openCMA on your PC. This won’t give you access to the PSN, but at least you can use the CMA.
I haven’t verified that myself yet. I also don’t know if 1.52 patches Teck4′s exploit and/or my work on HBL.

It’s been 6 months since the last release of Wagic, and I’m sure some of you might have thought the project was on a halt. The truth is, we’ve been working on several major things on Wagic that postponed this release. This release is a major milestone for us, as this is the first official release were we support iPhone/iPad and Android.
What is Wagic?
Often compared to commercial games for its replay value and quality, Wagic is a heroic fantasy card game, in which you fight as a wizard against the computer. As you win battles, you unlock new game modes and earn credits that allow you to improve your army. Wagic is community driven and entirely customizable: you can create themes, mods, new rules, or even new games (check for example Knights VS Dagons on our forums, a game strongly inspired by strategy games such as warcraft). Wagic is available in several languages (English, French, German, spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Serbian), and open source. It currently runs on the Sony PSP, Windows, Linux, maemo, meego, Android, and iOS (iPhone, iPad).
Changelog
This version of Wagic comes with more than 500 new unique cards, including some from the long awaited set Innistrad, but the main reason this release took time is that we today bring a version of Wagic available for iPhone, iPad, Android and Meego (Nokia N9) on top of the already supported platforms (Windows, Linux, Maemo, and the PSP). This required major improvements to our game, and this is the main reason this release took so long. Other platforms are however getting there share of bug fixes and improvements, see details below.
Detailed changelog:
•iOS (iPhone/iPad) version now available! (see details below)
•Android version now available! (see details below)
•Meego (Nokia N9) version now available!
•More than 500 new unique cards. Wagic now supports 15400 cards (8700 unique), including cards from Innistrad.
•New abilities for card coders. We will update the card Wiki asap with details
•A new progress bar in the main menu shows you how far you are from completing the game (unlocking all sets, mods, opponents, etc…)
•You can now easily create unlockable mods. If you’re interested, check the rules folder, in particular the file awards.dat
•A new file system supporting zip files. For users, this change will mostly be transparent, but it should make installing the game easier, as well as installing/uninstalling mods. This should also make it easier for most people to install images. See this thread in the forum for details, especially if you want to create campaigns or mods for the game.
•Many bug fixes
Special notes about the iOS and Android versions
Wagic has been around on the PSP for years. It gave us lots of time to improve it. Hopefully, these 4 years of development will be visible when you try Wagic on your touch device. Nevertheless, this is a whole new interface to handle for us, and we know it is far from perfect. But we are doing this release because many people have been waiting for it. Wagic on iOS or Android is not perfect, but we hope you’ll enjoy it anyway. We hope that this release will motivate some additional devs to come and join the fun of working on this project. We are a bunch of hobbyists creating Wagic on our free time, come and join us! The source can be downloaded here. If you have the skills to compile the game and fix a bug or improve something, send me a patch and we’ll give you write access to the SVN!
The iOS version requires a jailbroken device. The android version requires you to install the apk by yourself, using for example Astro. We are aware that solutions such as cydia or the android market exist, but we are waiting for an improved version of Wagic before we go mainstream.

In the past days I stabilized HBL for Teck4′s exploit and got some major homebrews to work. In the video below I’m showing a few homebrews running on the PS Vita. I also included Picodrive again to show that fixing the sound issue is relatively easy as it is just a setting in the emulator. Check the video below.
You can see in this video snes9xTYL (super nes emulator), Bookr (pdf reader), CSPSP, T.O.M.E. (text mode rpg), EmuMaster (game boy emulator), Zombie Crisis (FPS), Wagic (which loads about 10 times faster than on a real PSP, this talks for the improved access speed of this new memory stick format), cavestory (platform/adventure), Picodrive (sega genesis emulator), Spider solitaire, ScummVM (point-and-click adventure), Daedalus (N64 emulator, this is not DaedalusX64), FCEU-PSP (Nes emulator). Those are more or less the homebrews I recommended to HBL users back when HBL was big.
Missing from this video is (unfortunately) gpsp which I couldn’t get to run on the Vita, while it ran fine on the PSP. What I could see is that the emulator is more sensitive than the PSP when a thread that’s currently not running crashes. I think (not sure) that gpsp somehow crashes HBL. On the psp it usually means that once you quit gpsp, HBL crashes. On the vita it seems to crash as soon as gpsp does “something wrong” to hbl, which is roughly as soon as it loads.
I got major homebrews to work, and now I’ll focus on reporting this to the EU and US version, which both need to be brought up to speed with these latest changes.
From what I could see, syscall estimation basically doesn’t work (which is what JJS discovered a while ago when porting HBL to 6.60), which will limit the amount of homebrews that can be played with this exploit, but as you can see on the video, I got a few good ones to run already
A message to haters who say I’m reusing other people’s work from the PSP scene and not contributing anything new: ask yourself who made it so easy to port HBL to new game exploits in the first place.

Virtuous Flame released an update to his Open CMA tool a few days ago. Open CMA allows you to connect your playstation Vita to your PC through the Content Manager without needing to be connected to the internet. This is useful if you need to transfer some files while away from your network, or simply if like me you don’t see why it should be required to be connected to the internet when you transfer files between two pieces of hardware you own. This update (revision 3) patches the PC side of the content manager further, preventing it from auto updating. Without this patch, Sony’s driver is silently updating itself whenever it’s connected to the internet even if you were using open CMA so far, which makes this r3 an important update.

I managed to port HBL to the US version of Teck4′s exploit in exactly 45 minutes (including writing the savedata exploit and the binary loader), which is a new personal record, thanks to the scripts included in HBL’s repository, and also to the fact that the different versions of the game are internally fairly similar (which is to be expected because technically the game is supposed to be the same, just translated, but I seem to recall it wasn’t that easy for the Hotshots golf exploit)I also updated the EU/US versions of this HBL port to get the tweaks I worked on for the past weeks in order to get a fair amount of homebrews to work.
The next step for me is to write a bit of documentation on how to use all this, and then patiently wait. As far as a release is concerned… well check the FAQ I wrote yesterday.
I could spend time polishing this port of HBL for the Vita, improve compatibility, and I might do it, but since there’s a high risk this gets used by only a small amount of people before it gets patched, I’ll probably leave it in its current state for now. It’s probably not worth working too much on the details if nobody ends up using it. Of course if by some sort of miracle this doesn’t get patched immediately by Sony, I’ll update it accordingly.
Now let’s all wait (I’m probably more excited than anybody else about this release, really…)

A brand new, purpose-built version of Mortal Kombat will be released on Sony’s PlayStation Vita in the spring, Warner Bros has announced.
The emphasis in this version – which will return to the series’ 2D roots – has been put on brutality, with fatalities and x-ray moves getting a special mention.
New gameplay modes include Tag Team and Challenge Tower.
“The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita,” NetherRealm‘s creative director Ed Boon stated.
“The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”

Mamosuke confirmed to me today that Teck4′s exploit for the PSP Emulator in the vita is still working on 1.52. Note that it doesn’t guarantee 100% that some of the techniques used to get HBL to work on top of this exploit haven’t been patched, as I haven’t tested myself. But for now I’m confident. I might update to test that, at some point

The PSP scene has been a bit of a ghost town lately. Little to say in the ways of big news, the new-ish PSP E1000 was somewhat of a flunk, and CFW development seems to have come to a grinding halt. This may be due to the up and coming worldwide release of the PS Vita, and it seems like the Vita may be causing some other repurcussions in game retailers.
Working in retail, it seems that competing retailers are slowly decreasing their stock count for the PSP 3000 and GO. The store in which I work in is clearing out their PSP stock indefinitely, as well as all the UMD's up in the shelves collecting dust behind the PS3 games. Other stores more focused specifically on gaming seem to be focusing on promoting the sale of second hand consoles, so as to clear them out a bit quicker and possibly even get a debit back for any unsold new PSP's.
Much like the Guitar Hero article I posted a short while back, I suggest that if you are interested in any UMD's or getting a PSP new or old, now is the time to do it. Who knows how long PSP's will still be on the shelves for.

The president and CEO of SCE Andrew House has labelled last year’s high-profile hack on the PlayStation Network as “ironic”.
The statement comes as much of the internet – including most famously Wikipedia – have ceased operations for a day in protest at the proposed US legislation SOPA that is designed to combat piracy and illegal content sharing online.
“The irony, for me, is that we became the target because we thought, I think quite fairly, that we were trying to protect our intellectual property rights from piracy,” House told CVG.
“But it was ironically that which led a certain sector of opinion to think that, somehow, we were acting against their best interests. That will be an ongoing challenge, and I think it's one we'll have to take extremely seriously.”
House went on to insist that Sony is now a far safer digital entity than it ever was before.
“Not to sound like an excuse, but we're now in very solid company with many other institutions and companies that are suffering under the same sort of threat,” he insisted. “But it galvanised us, right up to the very top of the company.
“We've hired an extremely experienced chief information security officer at the corporate level, not just on the PlayStation level. We've revamped our systems to the best of our ability, to try to ensure that this kind of thing, as far as possible, can be prevented. But there were some very ugly threats going on, and we became the target.”

Last time Atlus teased a new game whose name started with "G," some fans assumed it would be a game in the Growlanser series. It was Gungnir that particular time, but now Atlus has revealed a second G game, and it's totallyGrowlanser.
Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, coming to PSP this summer, is a localized version of Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded, the tactical RPG sequel released on PS2 in 2003 and then remade on PSP last year. The PSP update has improved loading times, a message-skip option, and lots of new in-game content.
Because of a combination of licensing restrictions and the scope of the game's script, only the "many anime cutscenes" will be voiced. We're sure the people sitting next to you on the subway won't mind.

Indian studio Version 2 Games will bring a new PSN title to PS3 on February 9:Smash 'n' Survive, a game based on the life of comedian Gallagher. Oh, no, sorry, it's actually a car combat game.
Players choose one of 30 "brutal concept cars, including muscle, agile, monster, buggy and SUV vehicles," and race across a selection of ten maps, attempting to destroy one another with flamethrowers, "magneto pulsars," and other exotic implements. Game modes like group derby, "plant the bomb," and team modes will help vary the gameplay, though we assume it'll still be about smashing other cars.
Smash 'n' Survive will include single-player and two-player split screen modes at launch; online play for six players will be smashed into it in a free update this April.

SCE president and CEO Andrew House says healthy sales of Nintendo's 3DS proves that, despite the doom and gloom naysayers, there's still sufficient demand for dedicated gaming portables.
"The sales of the 3DS, having the advantage of releasing a little bit ahead of us, have been exceedingly good. I think that shows that there is, in general, a lot of demand for a gaming-primary portable device," House told the PlayStation Blog.
The mirrors the sentiments of SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who recently said Sony is "encouraged" by 3DS' success over the holidays.
House hopes that people who discover gaming on other devices may 'graduate', in a sense, to more sophisticated games on Vita.
"But our device in contrast has just so much more to offer," added House. "What I think we've done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games on other devices, but now wants a deeper, better or more premier gaming experience," he said.
The new head of PlayStation granted CVG a full and frank interview at the PS Vita's Japanese launch, which you can read through that link.

PCSX2 SVN r5072 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5072
GSdx: added a shortcut in GSState::Transfer for the most frequent vertex format I found (helps quite a lot), less thread-syncing for the sw renderer, and the bios boot logo was fixed (just had to clear the memory on reset).

Jpcsp SVN r2444 is released. JPCSP is the most advanced PlayStation Portable(PSP) emulator, allowing you to play your PSP games on a PC. Even though Jpcsp is written in Java, it can already reach 100% PSP speed on a lot of commercial games... and the emulator performance is constantly increasing. Jpcsp takes full advantage of dual-core processors, matching the PSP dual-core architecture. Even a quad-core can give a small performance improvement by leaving free CPU cores for the Java JIT Compiler and the graphics cache.
Jpcsp SVN changelog:
r2444
Improvement of the software renderer: apply the perspective correction while mapping a texture to a 3D triangle (take the depth into account while mapping). Now the texture is correctly mapped on the 3D cube demo.

Sony knows you're likely scarred for life after its many security snafus, so it's doing all it can to keep you in the loop in regards to its PSN. The network will be experiencing a temporary outage today to make room for "routine scheduled maintenance" starting at 11AM ET and ending at approximately midnight. As usual in these scenarios, you won't have access to any PlayStation services on your PS3 or PSP, including PlayStation Home and Sony's Music and Video Unlimited offerings. That said, if you wereshootin' and slashin' fools before the downtime, you should have no hassle continuing with your current session -- though access to any of the aforementioned services is still out of the question. Desperate to know exactly when the PSN will be back up and running? Keep it locked on the Playstation Twitter feed to find out.

2K Games has lifted the lid on an alternative way to play upcoming shooter BioShock Infinite that it hopes will ensure the game sells to the hardcore audience.
Called 1999 Mode, the publisher says it requires “substantial commitment and skill development” and that it is “designed for gamers who long for the days of games that demanded more of the player”.
Chief amongst the changes is a tweak to the way character development works. In 1999 Mode, any changes or upgrades applied will be permanent. Players will also see their game ended if they die without the required resource to be resurrected.
“We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” the creative director BioShock Infinite’s developer Irrational Games Ken Levine stated.
“In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.
“I’m an old school gamer. We wanted to make sure we were taking into account the play styles of gamers like me. So we went straight to the horse’s mouth by asking them, on our website, a series of questions about how they play our games. 94.6 per cent of respondents indicated that upgrade choices enhanced their BioShock gameplay experience; however, 56.8 per cent indicated that being required to make permanent decisions about their character would have made the game even better.”

Sony Ericsson has seen its status slip from fourth/fifth biggest OEM in the world to the ninth.
It was hoping an focus on Android would turn its fortunes around, but that switch didn't make too much difference as the Xperia range failed to match sales of rivals like Galaxy and Desire.
Ahead of its rebranding that will see future handsets drop the 'Ericsson' moniker, the company has reported a pre-tax loss of €247m for Q4 2011. The company said it shipped just 9m units in the fourth quarter, down 20 per cent on last year.

Resident Evil 6 is heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 20, 2012, with a PC release to follow, says Capcom. In it, returning favorites Leon S. Kennedy (the "S" stands for "Superhair") and Chris Redfield (tree arms fromRE5) will play co-leads, each leading his own campaign through the US and China, respectively. The brand new trailer is just above.
Any of this sound familiar? That's probably because the next entry in the Resident Evil series was outed a bit earlier than its publisher expected this afternoon, when images of RE6 marketing were sent to IGN by a Gamestop employee. Subsequently, a flood of details about the unannounced game were unleashed by a couple different outlets regarding its gameplay, dev team, and characters.
Many of said details have been re-confirmed by Capcom in its own press release, though it's lacking in the specificity we reported earlier. The trailer, however, depicts a new martial-artsy character fighting various ... things (and people), some splashes of cover-based shooting, and a presidential zombie. And is that Ashley? Three words: Oh. Em. Gee.

Sony toyed with removing the Vita's twin analogue sticks entirely while prototyping the device, the platform holder has revealed.Speaking in an interview on the PlayStation Blog, Sony designer Tokashi Sogabe revealed that his team discussed various alternative plans for control inputs, including "flat slide pads"."We also built a prototype with flat slide pads, a bit like what you have on your laptop, but it just didn't feel responsive enough for gaming and we learned that you need that physical response of tilting the stick to feel like you have total control."For me as a designer [analogue sticks] have presented a huge challenge, partly because it's much easier to design products with entirely flat surfaces."We also discussed the position of the analogue sticks at great length: I didn't feel that they were in the perfect position from a design perspective but Worldwide Studios were adamant that they were in the best position for comfortable gameplay, and in the end they won out on that point."Sogabe also mentioned a few other rejected concepts for the new portable, including a beefy 5.5 inch screen with the buttons somehow incorporated into the display."It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking bigger is better when it comes to screen size but it isn't," he explained."There was a great deal of discussion and we even talked about using a 5.5 inch screen with all of the buttons included on it, but that had a negative impact on the operability of the device and the idea was abandoned."Finally, he mentioned that a number of different form factors were tried out, including a clam shell design."When we started work on PS Vita, the shape we had in mind was very similar to the final product, but in the testing phase we tried many different designs, including a sliding system [similar to PSP go] and a clamshell."We settled on the final model after many discussions with the game development teams in Worldwide Studios."The final version of Sony's new hardware goes on sale in Europe and the US from 22nd February.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House has told CVG that the company's keen to use digital delivery methods to explore releasing more casual and legacy PlayStation content, but that physical media remains the best way to offer top-end gaming experiences.
Speaking in the second part of a recent interview, the PlayStation boss said: "There are clearly a lot of opportunities with regard to business models around games, all of which we're interested in and are exploring."Some of our group companies already have a stake in free-to-play models and so on.
"The scale of data involved and issues around latency do mean that, at least for now, the easiest consumer experience is from physical media," House continued, mirroring recent comments from SCE chairman Kaz Hirai, in which the exec hinted at a disc-based future for PlayStation hardware.
House added: "Having said that, we're starting to see some growth in the number or proportion of our consumers that want to access their content via download. But I think it's still pretty small.
"Interestingly, some of our consumer data is saying that consumers' expectation, or their perception of how fast their broadband connection is, doesn't necessarily match the physical reality. So I think there's an expectation gap there that needs to be overcome."

Dual analogues on a handheld may seem like a no-brainer to those who've been crying for them for years, but designing the Vita was quite the challenge.
That's according to Sony's Takashi Sogabe, boss man at the Sony Corporate Design Centre team that headed up Vita's aesthetic design."The engineers have been working on the PS Vita analog sticks for quite some time and it is a much greater technical challenge to build sticks this small than you might imagine," he told the PS Blog.
"We also built a prototype with flat slide pads, a bit like what you have on your laptop, but it just didn't feel responsive enough for gaming and we learned that you need that physical response of tilting the stick to feel like you have total control," he added, possibly taking a jab at the 3DS' Slider Pad.
"I didn't feel that they were in the perfect position from a design perspective but Worldwide Studios were adamant that they were in the best position for comfortable gameplay, and in the end they won out on that point," said Sogabe.
At one point, it sounds like Sony was considering going fully touch-screen iPhone-style with Vita. "It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking bigger is better when it comes to screen size but it isn't. There was a great deal of discussion and we even talked about using a 5.5 inch screen with all of the buttons included on it, but that had a negative impact on the operability of the device and the idea was abandoned," said Sogabe.
"When we first saw a prototype of the beautiful OLED screen we used on PS Vita, we felt it deserved to be bigger than the 4.3 inch screen on PSP. It's almost as if we settled on five inches in order to really maximise the same impact that we felt when we first saw it."

Not that we're necessarily surprised by Sonic CD taking the number-one spot on December's PSN charts, but it's always a little sobering when the classics of yesteryear outsell brand-new titles like Trine 2. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, friends.
Well, the fact that Sonic CD is arguably the best 2D Sonic game of all time probably has something to do with it too, but we all know most of us bought it just to hear again. Hop past the break for the full list of December's best-selling PSN titles.

Remember the pricing plan we unveiled for PlayStation Vita's AT&T data service? Yeah, well, forget it. All of it. Well, most of it. You'll see:
AT&T has changed its 3G data plans for the PlayStation Vita, according to theVita AT&T listing, to one $15, 250MB plan and one $30, 3GB plan. Previously AT&T announced a $25, 2GB plan instead of the 3GB one, but it seems that wasn't enough of a jump between consumer bases. As there are 1,024 megabytes per gigabyte, paying double for about 12 times the data space doesn't seem like such a bum deal.

Ok guys we tested the possibilities on firmware 1.52 for a few days now. What I can confirm is the following:
- Tech4's exploit still works
- Wololo's HBL still works
- everything I research atm didn't change from 1.50 to 1.52
If that is fine for you, there's no reason not to update.
Anyways, I have to mention that this can change without a firmware upgrade!
If you are online with your PS VITA, it can download and install silent updates for any application which runs in usermode and has nothing to do with system critical modules.
The good is, those updates are removed once the system is restored to the current firmware, so it would not be a major problem to remove a fix.

via http://ps3.gx-mod.com/modules/news/a...p?storyid=3053
Kakaroto left a long note on his blog to show us the progress of his project which is very delayed and put the record straight with Mathieulh. Kakaroto settles accounts.
Since my ad to almost two months, there has been much progress. We have not relaxed our efforts, we are a group of ten developers who worked hard for two months, sometimes 15 hours a day to bring the homebrew on the latest update of PS3. There are three parts to hen the first to get the packages to install on the PS3, this game is over, tested, debug, etc.. The second part is to obtain the release of the application, it still has major problems ... The last part is something I would not say at the moment (it's a surprise), but it's over 70% to 60% (and it has nothing to do with the peek & poke or BackupManager or n ' matter what others like this. This is a solution and it will "hack free") Now, launch an application is the biggest challenge is what we worked on in recent months and as some know if you follow my tweets, I asked her to give me Mathieulh NPDRM algorithm is necessary to start an application. But he was reluctant, keeping it for people who want to kiss his feet (or whatever). In the end, he refused to give it to me, my first intention releaser quickly took longer than I would 'have imagined. Mathieulh launched once again one of his famous puzzles that are for him "very useful for people who have a brain." Then he told us that the solution to our problems was to look in the appldr 3.56. And it was something that Lv1 which was sent to applrd or not the hash check. And killed after sweating our brains, we came to the conclusion that it's bullshit. After a month of disassembly and several checks of our results, we can say that the hash algorithm is not in the 3.56 firmware as he says. He says he is a hash AES OMAC, but after monitoring of all functions in the OMAC appldr, we found that it was not used for the hash. Then he said he meant HMAC, then in the Lv1 ... It came after the huge fight on Twitter where he made his usual morning saying he would share something (FYI, this code was not him, I had proof, but I do not reveal it, I told him promiis and I will keep my promise), because he forgot to remove the name of the developer in a file. In addition, it was useless except to make me lose a shit day uncommented code. So why stick me an enigma after what happened? Just to sabotage us and make us lose time. Anyway, we all agreed that Mathieulh was full of shit (we knew before, but he lost the benefit of the doubt) and we decided to continue our work without us unnecessary worry about their puzzles. We tried to use / decrypt the 3.60 firmware to find the algorithm Now, some weeks later, we finally figured out a missing piece in the algorithm npdrm and is explained here for all to enjoy the game PS3 is an executable format SELF, SELF these are signed and encrypted. PSN games (games not run from a disk) they need an extra layer of security called "NPDRM." A self npdrm is so basic, an executable encrypted and signed and re-encrypted with a new layer information. In less than 3.55 and was able to sign our own self as if it files the original Sony Ps3 and executes them without any problems. However they are not really like the original, it lacks the information layer and the Ps3 just ignore this check. Since version 3.60, this check is done, if we could sign our self with this layer of the Ps3 rerun. Another important point explained, I said several times that were self signed. ECDSA signature that the Ps3 can easily check to see if a file has been modified or not. It is easy to validate a signature, but impossible to create without the private key. (think of it as a real signature, you can see the signature of your father and recognize, but you can not sign just like him, and you can recognize if your brother has tried to imitate his signature). So how have we been able to sign files 3.55? This is because this "ECDSA signature" is just a very complicated equation (my head still hurts trying to understand, but I could talk about this in the future and try to explain in simple terms if people are interested). A very important part of this equation is that you must use a random number to generate the signature, but had failed and Sony used the same number every time. In doing so, it was easy to find the private key (which allows us to imitate perfectly the signature) with a few equations on it. So to summarize, a "signed file" is a file that is digitally signed with a "signature ECDSA" that can be falsified, unless you have the "private key. Let us return to the subject, above 3.55 Sony has not made the same mistake, and uses a truly random number, so it is technically impossible to find the private key . The reason we lost two months and that the above Mathieulh lied by saying he could do. Remember when the firmware 4.0 is out and I said that my system was still running, he also confirmed that the algorithm works, he lied because he can not have the private key. I said I had proof of the lies of Mathieulh, here: he says it is in 3.56 is false, he says it's a signature OMAC AES is false, he says it in HMAC is false, he says it is in appldr is false, he said in LV1 is false, he says he can do is wrong, he said that "it takes an hour to find out if you have a brain 'is false, he says to verified that it works in 4.0 is false, he says that the algorithm / key is wrong, he said that once we know the algorithm used, we can reproduce is false. Now you know the real reason he refused to "share" what he had. It's because he has nothing ... So why is all this? The orgeuil does not allow him to admit he can not? To make us waste time? For me it is pure sabotage. Enough about him, back to the HEN 4.0, then what? We now know that we can not sign an application on 3.60 (it can work in 3.56 though). What we do is find another way, a new exploit. We will also be looking for "collision signature" and this we will need the help of the community. Dust 514 to establish universal PSN microtransaction rules; Game could still hit retail
Sony Computer Entertainment is negotiating an in-game currency policy for all virtual items traded on PS3, the CEO of CCP Games has said.
Hilmar Pétursson told Develop that the studio was “breaking new ground” in outlining protocol on how developers can trade goods across the PlayStation Network.
It is expected that the negotiations will establish pricing tiers of virtual items, as well as the revenue split between Sony and developers.
The talks could pave the way for a more standardised virtual item policy for other third-party developers. It could also open the floodgates on in-game item sales across the PlayStation Network and, in theory, encourage more free-to-play games on PS3.
“We’re having many meetings with Sony to ensure they have solid policies on virtual currency,” Pétursson said in a new interview with Develop.

Several videos have emerged online that appear to depict hackers playing pirated PS3 games on PlayStation Vita.
Eurogamer reports that the exploit requires a PS3 using the old 3.55 firmware version. Even though Vita Remote Play support was only introduced with the 4.00 firmware release, this restriction can be circumvented within the OS settings.
Games seen being played in the videos include Red Dead Redemption, Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham Asylum.
However, from the evidence presented so far the performance of these titles is patchy to say the least, lagging way behind what is possible with proper Remote Play functionality.
Sony has previously expressed its intention to enable Vita Remote Play with PS3’s entire software library, with certain titles supporting a higher framerate.

It looks like Sony's been reading our daily email missives, bemoaning the state of its PlayStation certified gaming selection. The message appears to be getting through, with several PSP titles getting spotted over at the Entertainment Software Rating Board with PlayStation certification. Ahead of any official fanfare, there's no big hitters here just yet, but titles like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror and Daxterare likely to be more resonant with gamers than the pitiful offering we've seen so far from its PS Store app. Alongside Syphon Filter and Daxter, PS3 port Fl0w and Pinball Heroes were also spotted getting their contents okayed by the ESRB. Unsurprisingly, there's no detail here on release dates or technical requirements -- something that we reckon could be important, given the technical gap between the Xperia Play and the dual-cored innards of Sony's tablets. It's also worth noting that Pinball Heroes is already available on the Tablet P. Sorry Sony, but we'd still trade all of what's been leaked here for a portable version of the original Metal Gear Solid -- without hesitation.

Soul Calibur has always been the everyman fighter. Of all the major fighting game series on the market, Soul Calibur is the game that you would probably feel most comfortable playing with your non-gaming friends or significant other. And a lot of that has to do with the weapons.
The Soul series wasn't the first fighting game to feature weapons, of course. In the early days of the genre, Samurai Shodown distinguished itself with its detailed sprites, gore, and katanas. Battle Arena Toshinden, meanwhile, distinguished itself as the first 3D weapons fighter, close to a year before the original Soul Edge hit the arcades.
Soul Edge, for its part, was Namco's way of testing uncharted waters. It was positioned as an alternative to Tekken and Virtua Fighter, which dominated 3D fighting at that time, and its weapons were a big part of its appeal. Apart from feeling smoother than the stiff Tekken, the strategic concept of weapon range was more intuitive than the combo-heavy 3D fighters that had preceded it.
The reason it's so easy to understand is that the concept is built into the visual vocabulary of the game. When you look at Siegfried, you see a large knight with a gigantic blade. It's instantly apparent that he has longer reach than, say, the lightweight ninja Taki. And a good player knows how to put that advantage to good use, or to minimize it in its turn.
Today, Soul Edge is largely forgotten outside of a small cadre of dedicated fans, but it did its part to lay down the foundation for the series by introducing the story as well as familiar characters like Mitsurugi. Soulcalibur V director Daishi Odashima certainly seems to have some affection for the original game. He even argued in favor of naming the upcoming sequel "Soul Edge 2," but was overruled.

Have you been waiting for more two-fisted Move action? Lamenting that second Move controller you bought for yourself, after The Fight: Lights Out lost its appeal? Developer Lamagama will put those wands to use with its upcoming game Quadratum Mortis, a fantasy-style combat game that uses two Moves to control a sword and shield -- or, if the above concept art is any indication, two swords.
According to the blurb on Lamagama's site, you'll be able to "fight with your friends over PlayStation Network," and use a traditional controller if you don't have a pile of Moves around.
Lamagama is also at work on Egg 'n' Roll, a 3D action game planned for release on "mobile platforms such as iOS and PS Vita," due in Q4.

The ESRB has rated crime epics Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City for the PlayStation 3. Considering the blockbuster third entry in the series is available on iOS and Android, word of it coming to the PS3 isn't the craziest news we've heard about the classic title in recent memory.
The third entry in the GTA3 series, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, still doesn't have a PS3 listing from the ESRB, so we aren't sure if it's just cruisin' in later for a drive-by or part of what's likely Rockstar adding the two other games to PSN for digital distribution. Of course, if you own a first-gen PS3, your system is backwards-compatible and should have no issue playing the original PlayStation 2 discs (chances are you already own them).

The Sony studio behind forthcoming Vita racer ModNation Racers: Road Trip has explained its perplexing decision not to include head-to-head online multiplayer in the game.Writing in a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony San Diego game director Erich Waas said that the developer's aim was to focus on innovating online play rather than falling on back on tradition."I know there are some of you that are disappointed that ModNation Racers: Road Trip doesn't let you play head-to-head online other than ad-hoc," wrote Waas."But we really wanted to evolve online functionality and take advantage of the PlayStation Vita's unique feature set in new ways. If all we ever did as developers is rehash features that have been done in previous games, we'd still be entering passwords instead of using save files and you'd have to start the entire game over after you lost your three lives (extra 1-ups aside)."While online head-to-head has been a mode used in many games in recent years, we focused on making a game that is crafted for how portable games are most often played - in quicker 'pick up and play' sessions multiple times in a day. Your online interaction, competition and socialisation will always be when it's convenient for you."Elsewhere in his post, Waas detailed in full exactly what sort of online features you can expect from the game when it launches this Spring - namely localised leaderboards, downloadable ghost data, track sharing and various geolocation extras.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK has opened a new Vita showcase in Glasgow, allowing consumers to try up the upcoming handheld.
The Glasgow event is part of the Vita Rooms tour, which creates temporary venues where gamers can learn more about PlayStation Vita and its games, as well as getting hands-on time.
The Glasgow Vita Rooms will be open from January 23rd to January 29th, before the tour moves to London. The capital city venue will open on February 16th and remain open until Vita's UK launch day, February 22nd.
The first Vita Rooms saw Sony take over Manchester, where attendees were entertained by DJ Tim Westwood. Celebrity guests included England rugby star Mark Cueto, Manchester City's Mario Balotelli, boxer Amir Kahn and Coronation Street's Jack Thomas.
"PlayStation Vita is an amazing piece of technology - but the very best way to make people realise this is by putting it in their hands," said SCE UK's vice president and managing director Fergal Gara.
"What I have taken away from the past week in Manchester is the level of anticipation and buzz that is building as the PS Vita launch approaches. We now look forward to Vita's reception north of the border."

Those gosh-darned hackers just refuse to get off Sony's lawn, serving up yet another exploit for the outfit's latest baby, the PlayStation Vita. Well, sort of -- the Vita's own code hasn't been breached, but it sure plays nice with PlayStation 3 custom firmware 3.55. The PS3 tweak apparently recognizes the Vita as a mobile phone, which somehow allows it to Remote Play a wider assortment of PS3 games than normal. It's not all unicorns and double rainbows, however, as input lag appears to be an issue -- but it should help tide over enterprising Vita owners until Sony officially expands its list of Remote Play-compatible titles. In the meantime, those on the straight and narrow can console themselves with the Vita's recently updated 3G data plan. Hit the break to see the trick cram Battlefield 3 onto the small screen.

While Mr. Blurrycam already spotted the upcoming PlayStation 3 video editor at CES, he was unable to divulge any details on release dates. We were similarly unable to wring out much more when we hit the show floor ourselves. Now, Sony has finally outed a few key tidbits, including the fact that Europe can expect it to arrive by the end of Q1 and that you'll have to fork out for the pleasure -- priced at around €10 ($13). According to Electricpig, the PlayMemories Studio will offer up cropping and zooming tools, slow-mo, and a medley of sound and visual effects. Incoming versions of the movie editor for iOS and Android, however, will still arrive gratis. Are you willing to stump up to get your Spielberg on? While there's nothing concrete on a US launch date just yet, we'd expect to see the editor to make a similar appearance over the next few months.

PS Vita (and Sony Walkman) designer Takashi Sogabe has told CVG that he'd like to make future PS Vita iterations thinner than the launch model.
Speaking in a round-table interview at Sony Computer Entertainment's Japanese HQ last month, Sogabe, who runs the Corporate Design Centre, also said he'd wanted to use metal rather than plastic materials when developing the system."Speaking not only about the PS Vita, we always have a battle between engineers and designers. The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," he said. "From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in.
"Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that. The main effort for me was to make this product happen. The buttons and analogue sticks were perhaps not in the best position from a design point of view, but we felt they were the best solution from a publisher's point of view.
"As a designer, I wanted to use metal rather than plastic," he added, "but because there are a lot of antennae in the body, we couldn't use metal."
You can read the full interview with Sogabe here, in which he also discusses the challenges involved in designing Vita's dual analogue sticks.
Are you picking up a Vita at launch and if so, which model are you going to plump for? Cast your eyes over our PS Vita review, if you haven't already, and don't forget the PS Vita release dateis less than a month away now.

Gearbox's long-in-development Aliens: Colonial Marines has again been delayed, with publisher Sega confirming the firstperson shooter will miss its most recently targeted spring launch window.
The PS3, Xbox 360 and PC game’s official website now carries an autumn 2012 launch window. Asked for comment on the title’s status, Sega confirmed the delay without specifying release plans.
“Aliens: Colonial Marines is a process of creativity and invention and those don't necessarily follow the structure of an assembly line,” the publisher told us. “While setting clear goals, deadlines and predictions is helpful, they are often subjective.
“We don't want to sacrifice the creative process just for the sake of following a blue print. We prefer to have the creative discovery shape that blue print because our goal is to make a great game, and we are prioritizing this goal over the previously targeted date.”
Aliens: Colonial Marines was originally scheduled for release in late 2008.

Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac has said that it’s work on the PS3’s Resistance series is over.
“We won’t be making any more Resistances,” Insomniac CEO Ted Price told VG247.
That’s not to say, of course, that the series won’t live on. But if it does, Insomniac won’t be involved. The third game in the series was released late last year and is critically regarded as the best instalment to date.
As well as co-op focused shooter Overdrive, Insomniac will also be devoting time to its new social games division Insomniac Click.
“Certainly over the next couple years, we’re going to see a huge evolution in visuals in social games,” Price added.
“It’s thanks to improving technologies. It’s thanks to browsers that are getting better and more powerful. It’s thanks to development teams – core traditional game teams who are moving into the space.”

Resident Evil 6 is Capcom’s largest-scale production the publisher’s ever worked on, with 600 staff working on the title.
The ‘dramatic horror’ title – revealed last week – will also promise a ‘larger world’ than previous Resident Evil games.
Exec producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said: “This is by far the largest-scale production Capcom has ever embarked on. Between the 150 staff members in Japan and everyone around the world we have more than 600 people involved. A lot of work has gone into this game.
“Resident Evil 6 is by far and away the most ambitious title in the series.”
Resident Evil 6 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added: “This game not only has a larger world and a deeper experience than you have ever played before, but we’re excited to say it’s a blend of action and survival horror – something we like to call dramatic horror.”
Resident Evil 6 will be released on Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 20th, with a PC version to follow.

During this week's PlayStation Blogcast, on which our own Ludwig Kietzmann is a "special guest," PlayStation Sr. Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman (yay, alliteration!) confirmed the planned multiplayer demo for Twisted Metal would hit PSN next week, on January 31.
If you like your manslaughter a bit less vehicular, you may want to check out a demo for another February-bound title, EA's rebooted Syndicate. It will also be a multiplayer demo, focusing on the game's co-op side, but you already knew that. Who needs expensive implants and cool tech for remembering things? Not you, buddy!

The average RRP of a boxed PlayStation Vita game in the UK on launch day will be £33, MCV can reveal.
The news comes as Vita gets its second £44.99 RRP title in the shape of FIFA Football. It joins Sony’s own Uncharted: Golden Abyss in the full-price tier.
Vita arrives next month in the midst of uncertainty concerning the handheld market.
Advocates like Nintendo argue that it remains healthy and viable. Others, however, believe that the popularity of the App Store and the increasing consumer expectations for cheap games mean traditional console gaming is no longer seen as affordable.
Here is the complete boxed price list for Vita’s launch games:
Sony
WipEout 2048 (£34.99)
Everybody's Golf (£34.99)
Modnation Racers: Road Trip (£34.99)
Little Deviants (£24.99)
Reality Fighters (£24.99)
Ubisoft
Asphalt Injection (£24.99)
Lumines (£34.99)
Dungeon Hunter Alliance (£34.99)
Michael Jackson: The Experience (£24.99)
Rayman Origins (£34.99)
PQube
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend (£39.99 standard, £44.99 Collector’s)
Tecmo Koei
Dynasty Warriors Next (TBC)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus (TBC)
Sega
Virtua Tennis 4 – World Tour Edition (TBC)
EA
FIFA Football (£44.99)
Namco Bandai
Ridge Racer (£19.99)
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (£34.99)
Touch My Katamari (£29.99)
Capcom
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (TBC)
Codemasters
Formula One 2011 (£39.99)
Square Enix
Army Corps of Hell (£29.99)
Many of these prices will be the same on PSN, though some will be cheaper. MCV is unable to provide specific details on these at the time of writing.

Sony's PlayStation Vita hasn't exactly sold like hotcakes over in Japan, so the company has sweetened the pot for the portable's potential Stateside buyers. Those who placed pre-orders will get a couple of extra goodies for their $350. To go with the previously promised limited edition case, 4GB memory card and copy of Little Deviants, you'll also receive 250MB of data from AT&T and a PlayStation Network game gratis as soon as you activate 3G on the device. Furthermore, folks buying a Vita on launch day can look forward to the same free data and PSN game, plus an 8GB memory card in exchange for their $300. So, that enough to get you on the handheld's bandwagon? Sound off in the comments below.

By this point, the shiny veneer of newness has worn off of Sony's rapidly approaching Vita and we're all pretty used to how the thing looks. Not everyone has seen it in person yet, granted, but we've all seen it, and its PSP-ish profile and itty-bitty analogue sticks have settled into that comfortable zone of mental familiarity.
The device could have been remarkably different, however. For instance, Sony designer Takashi Sogabe (responsible for the Walkman, among other things) had originally intended for the Vita to be a much more svelte device: "The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," Sogabe said during an interview with The Guardian. "From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in. Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that."
There was also a time when the Vita's shape had more in common with the DS than the PSP: "We came up with various patterns, including a clamshell one. Then we discussed it with a lot of publishers and settled on this shape." In the long run, Sony decided that it would be a better idea to transfer the PSP's brand equity to the Vita by having the devices look similar.
One major difference between the PSP and Vita, however, is the latter's massive screen, which at 5 inches makes it the biggest screen on any dedicated portable gaming device this side of an iPad. That figure had started at 5.5 inches, according to Sogabe, but was scaled back seeing as this is a portable device and everything. We like Sony's ambition with hardware design, but we'd still rather have the real Vita over a giant, wafer-thin abalone.

Fancy a go on a PlayStation Vita? According to reports, demo units have begun appearing in Best Buy store in US.
Destructoid says that a store in Connecticut has a pair of Vita units strapped to the bodies of employees, who are allowing curious gamers to get their sweaty mitts all over their glossy touch screens. The machines are apparently equipped with 4GB memory cards and copies of Little Deviants. No Uncharted, soz.
These demo units, however, don't appear to be widespread - this Vegas-based writer checked in with local Best Buy stores and got nothing but confused mumbles and oblivious dismissals. There are no Vitas in Vegas, it seems.
But there might be one at your local store - give them a call (and begin by explaining to them what a Vita actually is, FFS) before you Sonic-sprint out the front door.
UK gamers eager to sample PS Vita before its release will be able to try out the new handheldat any one of GAME and Gamestation's 600 specialist retail stores nationwide.

UK gamers eager to sample PS Vita before its release will be able to try out the new handheld at any one of GAME and Gamestation's 600 specialist retail stores nationwide.
Sony says every store manager has been sent a Vita unit "to enable them and their staff to demonstrate first hand just what makes the new PlayStation handheld so special".In-store demos include WipEout 2048, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, ModNation Racers: Road Trip, Reality Fighters, Little Deviants and Everybody's Golf.
Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Fergal Gara said: "PlayStation Vita is an amazing piece of technology - but the very best way to make people realise this, is by putting it in their hands. The beauty and clarity of the 5 inch OLED screen, the ergonomic design with the dual analogue joysticks, the interaction of the rear touch panel, all come emphatically to life."

PlayStation 'under a lot less pressure to go next-gen'
Sony will not likely announce its next generation console before Microsoft makes its move, a key executive at the PlayStation firm has said.
Weeks after it was suggested that Sony would reveal PlayStation 4 plans at E3 in June this year, PlayStation France CEO Philippe Cardon said the firm is "under a lot less pressure" to release a new console.
In an interview with Le Point, Cardon (pictured) was quoted as saying Sony would "probably be the last to announce something".
Two months ago the PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said it would be “undesirable” for the PlayStation 4 to launch later than its rivals – suggesting there has been internal debate on the matter.
Develop understands that incubation groups at several Sony games studios are working on next-generation game concepts.

Sony has announced an improved bundle in a bid to boost US demand for PlayStation Vita ahead of its launch next month.
Gamespot reports that a limited-time offer will give those buying a $300 Vita with 3G support an 8GB memory card, which retails for $30, as well as 250MB of data through AT&T, and a free download of a PSN game. The standard $300 3G Vita does not come with a memory card, which is required to play several of the launch titlesincluding Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
Those that opt for the $350 3G bundle already get the 4GB memory card, but Sony is also offering 250MB of data, a PSN download, limited edition case and a copy of Little Deviants. There are no similar offers for the WiFi version, which will retail in the US for $250.
The move appears to be designed to ensure that there is demand for the 3G Vita at launch, after Japanese consumers largely opted for the cheaper WiFi-only model when the new handheld launched in Japan last month. One report claimed retailers were cutting the price of the 3G model in a bid to boost sales. Vita will be released in the US, Europe and Australia on February 22.

The Simpsons Arcade is headlining February's PlayStation Plus bonuses. Sony offers an HD adaptation of the classic 1991 game free, for Plus members, through the end of the month. This is the Simpsons' first official launch confirmation, with previous sightings exclusive to XBLA, including this set of Xbox achievements spotted earlier this month.
Sony is handing out a special Valentine's Day present for Plus members as well, with a free download of the complete Far Cry 2 game, the week of February 14.
The Simpsons Arcade will include four-player online co-op and will be available at no cost to Plus members from February 7-29 -- and yes, that's a whole extra day this year, probably to contain all of our nostalgic Simpsons love.

Are you one of those guys in a helicopter hovering near spawn points inBattlefield 3 (say, an aircraft carrier), wantonly exploiting the game and infuriating players? You may not actually be cheating, but we still think you'rethe worst.
That aside, Battlefield 3 developer DICE is apparently looking to address allcheaters, and not just that guy who ruins the game for everyone with hisstupid, stupid helicopter, as the company has posted an ad for an "anti-cheat administrator." The move follows a recent redoubling of DICE's efforts to combat cheating in its latest game release.
Said administrator will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, many of which you'd expect a community liaison to handle, though the list is oddly missing "put up with staggering levels of infantile behavior from legal adults." Can you tell we don't like cheaters?

news via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/01/28/n...play-for-vita/
When the PlayStation Vita came out, everyone was excited about the remote play option. Who wouldn’t like being able to play Mortal Kombat on the Vita anywhere in the house? But, Sony blew it on this feature. The Vita has remote play, but it can only be used on some less than exciting games, like Bejeweled. However, a recent series of Youtube videos and some other players online have found a way to hack the Vita, opening it up to many other PS3 games. No one is sure if the hack is real[Note by wololo: between the time this article was written and the time it was published, the hack was proven to be real, and tutorials can easily be found to test it by yourself], but this can mean a lot for the hacker community if it’s real.
Normally when you connect the PlayStation Vita to the PS3 for remote play, it reads as a game system. No surprise, considering it is one. When the alleged jailbreak hack is used, the Vita no longer reads as a game system. Instead, the PS3 recognizes it as a mobile phone.
This is able to lift many of the restrictions the Vita has, allowing players to connect with high-profile games. At the same time, the Vita does not seem to lose any of its inherent power after the hack. In a number of YouTube videos, you can see someone playing Mortal Kombat, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Red Dead Redemption and Alice: Madness Returns. If this can truly be done, then this hack has the potential to split the Vita wide open, allowing it to play all those games you really wanted to when you heard about remote play.
This is how remote play should have been in the first place, which is causing the homebrew and hacker community to scramble. Many are now trying to find out if this hack is real, and how to duplicate it. If there is one reason why Sony doesn’t want the Vita to have such open remote play options, it is because of the gaming lags. The Vita is a strong machine, no one will dispute that, but it isn’t a PS3.
In many of these videos, you are going to notice a lot of input and gaming lags. While they look far from unplayable, it does look a little difficult to play during those intense moments when you are pulling off a 30-hit combo or shooting down 20 guys at once. Nonetheless, the games run satisfactorily, which should be enough for most Vita users.
Aside from the gaming lags, there are two other problems to worry about if this hack is real. If you do it, you are going against Sony’s ToS. If the Vita breaks, Sony isn’t going to do anything to help. Ever since PSP hacking started, bricking your system was a major problem. If this hack is real, consequences could come. Holding out to make sure it is worth it would be wise, as more is sure to come out surrounding remote play as the release date for Vita grows closer.

PCSX2 SVN r5085 is compiled.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5085
GSdx: fixing two different bugs of the sw renderer, addressing outside the texture in region wrap mode (skygunner), and little gaps in shadows and other random places (dq8, rogue galaxy, okami).
