Sure, you've been able to change the background on your PS Vita since day one, but swapping out the system's application icons wasn't exactly an option. Until now, that is. With the latest update to Sony's handheld, the custom themes that the catch-up kingpromised last month will soon be available. With software version 3.30 comes not only different icons for system settings and the like, but also new background music too, should you still have that turned on. Aside from Uncharted and Tearaway interface skins, thePlayStation Blog notes that not-game tie-in appearance packs themed around the four seasons and arts-and-crafts will be available too. Much like the trophy-rarity ratings coming to the portable with the patch (something the PlayStation 4 has had since launch), this is likely an appreciated gesture. However, we know there's probably at least a few amongst the PS4's 10 million owners who'd like to see their console look a little less blue sooner rather than later.

If you need a video refresher of just exactly what the PlayStation TV is capable of ahead of its US and Canadian release, Sony has something to take care of that. The video we've embedded below reinforces that Sony's micro console is a device for families with kids and touts its ability to do more than just Remote Play PlayStation 4 games or stream some of Sony's back catalog via PS Now -- it's a low-cost media-streaming gizmo as well. Perhaps best of all, it gets the point across in under 90 seconds. What the clip doesn't tell you, however, is that while the PlayStation TV can play PS Vita games natively, some of the handheld's best releases (think Tearaway and Wipeout 2048) aren't yet compatible because of that system's use of touch controls. Will that caveat make you reconsider plopping down $100 come October 14th? Let us know in the comments.

Japan is getting special, The Evil Within-branded PS4 consoles exclusive to the Japanese Sony Store with pre-orders starting in October, Siliconera reports. The PS4s come in both white and black, and they feature silhouetted images of an imposing asylum across the shiny portion of the console. In Japan, the game is titled "Psycho Break," and the name is included in the design.
There's no word on pricing in Japan or whether these consoles will make their way westward. The Evil Within is due out on October 14 in North America and Europe, for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

If the aesthetics of your Vita handheld are looking a bit drab, don't worry: A system update slated to hit the device "later tonight" adds support for a host of themes that can alter the appearance of your Home screen, Start screen, icons and background music.
Initially, the themes available for purchase from the PlayStation Network will be generic, colorful additions, though later themes will be patterned after hit games such as Tearaway, Freedom Wars and Uncharted: Golden Abyss. Sony has yet to reveal a price point for any of these themes, though if they follow the same pricing scheme as the PlayStation 3, expect the themes to fall somewhere between $1 to $3.

October 5th, 2014, 22:15 Posted By: wraggster
So, Vita firmware 3.30 is out, and as expected, it seems to patch a bunch of exploits.
As described by The Z in his article yesterday, it appears Sony did not patch the 50 game saves that got recently leaked, instead they patched the firmware somehow. That was the simplest entry point to patch everything in one go, but it also means that the game exploits are still potentially useful. People are already investigating, for example, if these game exploits could be reused for a VHBL release on 3.30. Again, it seems the game exploits themselves might not have been patched, but reusing them might not be as easy as it seems, because what got patched seems to be deeper. The typical “H.BIN” file (used as a binary loader, as explained here) for example cannot be properly loaded anymore, according to some reports from several hackers.
Additionally, the leak last month included more kernel exploits, and at the time of this writing I am not sure if those also got patched. My gut feeling says no but I am waiting for confirmation of that. It means those exploits could also be reused on 3.30 to run TN-V again.
The PS1 exploits allowed to run TN-X, a tool to run PS1 isos on the Vita with perfect sound compatibility. These have been patched as well, it seems.
More importantly, the Package Installer trick from SKFU has been patched. The tool is apparently still here, but gets force-closed by the system if you try to run it (see TomTomdu80’s video showcasing it below). This one could be the biggest hit to the Vita scene in the long run.
SKFU was confident because he had found “other” ways to run the package Installer, but the Sony developers haven’t merely patched the email trick, they have blocked the package installer interface entirely. I’d wait for SKFU’s statement (or other people who knew about the original trick) on this, but this could really be the biggest hit to the scene that happened with 3.30. And yeah, you’ll notice this one was totally unrelated to the gigantic leak of PSP exploits, which in the long run might be less of a problem.
Finally, yes, there exists a native hack, that was mentioned by Acid_Snake here, but that is reportedly patched in 3.30.
What’s interesting with firmware 3.30 is that it’s not the massive “PSP exploit leak” drama that could be the most hurtful to the scene in the long term, but the two “native” experiments that are being patched in 3.30, and that were publicly announced outside of any leak. One because the devs knew Sony already had a patch in 3.30, the other because the dev assumed he’d have other ways to access the loophole.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw a VHBL release, or even a TN-V release, for 3.30. I’m more concerned about what will happen on the Native front. Hopefully Acid_Snake, or other people working secretly on native software or hardware hacks, will have good news to share in the near future.
So the following questions remain: will the native hack on 3.18 be useful to unlock further secrets on the Vita? Is there another (publicly unknown) way to run the package installer? Is anyone actively working on VHBL/TN-V ports for 3.30 at this moment, considering the massive hackers exodus from the PSP emulator that happened last month?

PPSSPP Git (2014/10/04) is compiled. PPSSPP is a fast and portable PSP emulator for Android, Windows, Mac, and Linux, written in C++.
PPSSPP Git Changelog:
* Merge pull request #6974 from unknownbrackets/atrac-minor
Properly handle atrac packets with multiple frames
* Discard packet data when seeking.
* Actually use the temp packet.
* Don't eat packet data when using a temp packet.
* Attempt to ensure we don't decode partial frames.
* Align samples even after a loop.
This corrects the amount of audio after certain loops, but it doesn't seem
to output the right data when this happens.
Possibly, seeking isn't doing the right thing and resetting state that
shouldn't be reset when a loop happens. Not sure... but it was already
wrong before, this just reads the right amount of it.
* Ensure we request s16 samples.
We won't get these for atrac3+, but we should for atrac3 (seems to be the
default anyway, but better to be clear.)
* Centralize atrac frame decode logic.
* Properly handle atrac packets with multiple frames.
This gets us decoding the start of a file and near loops way more
correctly.
* Merge pull request #6969 from daniel229/savedata
Savedata minor
* savedata
* Merge pull request #6957 from unknownbrackets/reporting
Add an option to provide compatibility feedback
* Add actual reporting of compatibility.
* Add selector for compatibility rating.
Might just kill gameplay?
* Initial attempt at a compat report screen.
* Merge pull request #6971 from unknownbrackets/atrac-minor
Correct first next sample calculation
* Correct first next sample calculation.
If it's exactly matching a frame size, we need to return a full frame,
rather than 0. Fixes #6967.
* Merge pull request #6965 from rock88/master
iPhone 6 and 6 Plus support
* iOS: Add launch xib name to info.plist
* iOS: install LaunchScreen.xib
* iOS: add LaunchScreen.xib for support iPhone 6 and 6 Plus native screen resolution

A Kickstarter for a PlayStation Home-style virtual world on PS4 is now underway.
It’s called Neotopia and has a number of developers that have previously worked on Sony’s surprisingly profitable PS3 venture, which is scheduled for termination next year.
Features include customisable avatars and apartments, public spaces, voice and text chat, groups, a virtual currency, games and the chance to shape development via a voting system.
The crowdfunding push is looking to raise £250k, of which it has currently raised £16,430 with 25 days remaining.
Its founders include David Dow and Mark Jagger (All Zombies Must Die), Ed Gladwin (PlayStation Home), Nader Alikhani (Smartbomb) and Allan Robertson (Dovetail).
“Neotopia is a virtual world for PlayStation 4; an ever-evolving online space where you can meet, interact, play and share – a next-generation blend between the world of gaming and social media,” the pitch reads.
“Free from the off, Neotopia will allow you to be part of a rich and expansive social environment, brought to life with Unreal Engine 4 and the power of the PlayStation 4. You’ll create and customise an avatar - your conduit to Neotopia.
“There will be public spaces to explore, people to meet, events to attend and activities to get involved in. You’ll also be able to purchase a range of private Neotopia apartments, redecorate them, share them with your friends and rate those of others.”

Sony's holding a two-day PlayStation event in the middle of the desert, and it wants you to attend. Okay, technically Las Vegas isn't the middle of the desert, but it's certainly out there. What will said event entail? PlayStation social media man Sid Shuman says you'll, "Sit in on in-depth panels, meet the industry's best developers, score hands-on gameplay with tons of upcoming PlayStation games, collect free swag, and get a chance to purchase rare collectibles directly from their favorite game studios." It's kind of like PAX, basically, but allPlayStation. One more similarity to PAX? It'll cost ya. $50 for a one-day pass, $90 for both days. If those previous activities left you still sitting on the fence about attendance, Shuman also promises, "an exclusive first look at what's coming next in 2015, which I am told you will not want to miss." Project Morpheus details? Maybe a PlayStation helicopter? Who knows!
Hey, if nothing else, it's an excuse to fly to Las Vegas in December, right?

If you're planning to snag a PlayStation TV with game streaming in mind, you'll be glad to hear that it will be ready to go on day one. Sony has posted an FAQ confirming that thePlayStation Now beta will be available on the PS TV (and the PS VIta) in North America on October 14th, the same day that the mini console hits store shelves. As with the Now tests on bigger PlayStations, you'll have the option of renting 150-plus PS3 games with multiplayer support and cloud-based saves. Whether or not you're bent on using Now from the start, the FAQ is a handy primer for all the less-than-obvious things the PS TV can do -- it's worth a trip to the source link if you're at all curious.

Sony has confirmed that it is preparing to enter the Chinese market, verifying the authenticity of a document which says it will produce around 200,000 PS4s a year for the territory.
Bloomberg unearthed the agreement, filed to the website of the China Pilot Free Trade Zone, which was later authenticated by Sony spokesperson Masaki Tsukakoshi. However, he also made clear that the number of units was subject to demand, rather than being set in stone by the arrangement.
No launch date has been confirmed for the console in China, but Sony will definitely have an eye or two on the performance of Microsoft's Xbox One, which is already selling better in China than it has in Japan.
Both companies are capitalising on the experimental suspension of a 14 year ban on the retail of foreign consoles in the country, but remain cautious in a market characterised by unpredictability and copyright protection issues.

Do you have next Monday, October 13 off work? Are you planning ahead to call in sick for school that day? Do you have that date circled on your calendar with the note "gaming marathon" written on it? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, be aware that Sony has PlayStation Network maintenance scheduled for that day.
The routine maintenance is planned to begin at 1:00 p.m. EST (10:00 a.m. PST) and will last until 8:00 p.m. EST (5:00 p.m. PST). PlayStation's support team notedthat those that log in to PSN at any point from yesterday on will retain online play and app access during the maintenance period. However, the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home and account management services will not be available during that time.

Have you or someone you know actually used the PlayStation 4's SHAREFactory app to make fancy-looking highlight reels of gaming exploits? We ask because despite it being out for awhile now, unlike photo-mode images, we still haven't run across any samples aside from those produced by Sony. No matter, because the catch-up king is adding a handful ofnew features to the video-editing app anyway. In addition to new themes and saturation presets and improved audio quality, among other things, the ability to auto-trim longer clips has been added, too. From the sounds of it, this should be a pretty worthwhile patch for those who prefer to do their video-crafting and tweaking from their console as opposed to using external software. What we're left wondering, however, is when the 2.0 firmware update (the one with Share Play and YouTube exports) for the console itself will finally hit. Maybe we could get application folders and custom themes with it too?

We're creeping up to the PlayStation 4's one year anniversary and the system is finallygetting its 2.0 firmware update. Even better, there are a bunch of surprises; let's dive in. First up we have the expected: SharePlay which lets you virtually pass the controller for help, YouTube exports and themes. A post PlayStation Blog notes that in addition to those, a USB music player, the ability to change colors of the PS4 dashboard (if custom themes aren't your thing), as well as improvements to streaming are en route. There's content organization, voice commands and, last but not least, a new backup feature that lets you archive all your settings, media and data to a USB device coming too. Like theXbox One patch that hit this week, this adds a whole slew of features that ideally would have been available when the system launched last year. Join us after the jump for a breakdown, yeah?

According to an MCV report, Sony devotees in the UK planning to pick up a PlayStation 4 will soon have a new option to consider: a bundle including the console, FIFA 15 and Minecraft for £350. That price point matches that of the Glacier White PlayStation 4, which will be appearing in the UK on October 17.
We attempted to contact Sony to see if there's any chance the aforementioned bundle might appear outside of the UK - specifically, in North America - but the company would neither confirm the UK bundle, nor reveal an upcoming bundle aimed at the North American audience. Given the relative popularity of the FIFA series (and soccer in general) in the UK versus North America, it would come as little surprise if the bundle were exclusive to that side of the Atlantic.

The PlayStation TV launches today in North America boasting compatibility with a large number of PSP, PS Vita, and PS minis games, but users at NeoGAF point out that a last-minute compatibility update renders several major titles unplayable on Sony's new hardware.
Just prior to the system's stateside launch, Sony updated its PlayStation TVcompatibility list, removing entries for notable PSP games like Twisted Metal: Head-On, Valkyria Chronicles 2, and WipeOut Pure. Several Konami-published PSone games are also no longer compatible with the PlayStation TV, includingMetal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Suikoden.
The lack of omitted games that begin with the letters A through L suggests thatSony may be sorting out cross-platform rights issues alphabetically. While SNK-published PS minis games like Time Soldiers and Vanguard didn't make the cut, fellow SNK Arcade Classics 0 ports like Athena and Guerrilla War remain listed, hinting that further compatibility updates may be in store.
Positioned as a non-portable alternative to Sony's PS Vita system, the PlayStation TV plugs into any HDMI-equipped television and plays games and movies downloaded from the PlayStation Network. The system is available today as a $99.99 standalone package and bundled with a DualShock 3 controller and memory card for $139.99.

The retailer currently has the white PS4 listed at the nice, round figure of £351.86.Earlier this year, Sony said the "Glacier White" PS4 would be available separately in Europe at a recommended retail price of 399 euros. [Update: Sony confirmed to Eurogamer the recommended retail price is £349]

Modder Ed Zarick, creator of an Xbox One / laptop hybrid called the "Xbook One" is back at work making this generation of consoles more mobile. This week, heshares with us the "Playbook 4," a combination of Sony's PlayStation 4, custom 3D printed parts and a 22-inch Vizio televsion.
Like the Xbook One, the Playbook 4 is portable, but not entirely so - it still requires a wall outlet for power, so your options on where you can use it are limited. Still, there are plenty of outlets in the world, right? Got an hour to kill between college classes? Playbook 4. Long wait in the doctor's office? Playbook 4.
Wherever you go, we imagine you'll want to take extra special care of it. The system costs roughly $1500, after all (though the price comes down to $1095 plus shipping if you send Zarick your own PS4). To see the system in action, check out Zarick's overview video after the break.

Driveclub is currently facing a lot of problems including a few delays, server-side problems and more. Today a friend from Hong Kong told me about a major bug which he faced due the release day of Driveclub.
Since he is PS+ subscriber, he has access to the free PS+ version of Driveclub. He added it to his download list, waiting for the next time he'd be online.
Meanwhile he also purchased the disc version of Driveclub. Full of "GREATNESS AWAITS" thoughts, he turned on his PS4 and went online.
As the Driveclub PS+ version was already in his download list, it began to download. While the game was downloading, he wanted to use his disc version and pushed it inside the PlayStation 4's Blu-Ray drive.
It seems that no one actually ever tested if a user would do that. The disc drive of my friend stopped working right away. Ejecting and inserting works fine, but the PS4 won't read any disc anymore.
We guess that this happened because the disc version and the PS+ version share the same TitleID and that having the same one mounted twice is impossible to handle for the PS4. Inserting any disc simply results in a popup, showing that the game is already inserted.
Rebooting the system or anything safe-mode like did not help. Currently his PS4 sits in a service center waiting for a solution.

October 19th, 2014, 22:23 Posted By: wraggster
I've just read Wololo's recent article about how the actual 3.30 firmware for SONY's PlayStation VITA changed a lot of things in the scene. Please read it before this post, as I won't sum up everything again here.
Many patches prevent current hacks and exploits to be used on firmware 3.30.
But the question is: "Do we really need 3.30?"
If you waited your whole life for theme-support on the PSV, then you probably do need it. But that's not the case for the majority in my view. The scene should now finally focus on one firmware which is 3.18.
WebKit, PKG Installer and PSP Emu exploits on this firmware give us all opportunities required to develop a decent homebrew-enabled and native hackable system. Updating the operating system can be targeted at a later time, just like it was done for the PS3.
It's kind of useless to play SONY's cat and mouse game and re-develop PSP emulator exploits for every firmware just to wait for the next patch again.
And for those who still care about 3.30 - Yes, I can confirm the PKG Installer is still working on it.
An even more interesting information for you might be that there is a way to install PKG files without even touching the PKG Installer application
Good luck and stay focused,

Sony's digital TV and movie marketplace Video Unlimited will revieve a new 'Season Pass' feature, the company has announced.
Users of the Video Unlimited service will be able to purchase entire seasons of TV shows at once for a single lump sum, including current seasons with episodes that are yet to be released. Until now users were only able to purchase individual episodes.
Purchased seasons will appear in the My Videos section of the PlayStation Store or Video Unlimited account, where any future episodes will be viewable as soon as they become available.
The new 'Buy Season' button will be added to the PS Store on PS3, via the web and mobiles on thursday, October 24. Sony says the feature is "coming soon" to PS4, and Sony Bravia televisions and Blu-ray Disc players (released 2013 or later).
To coincide with the launch of Season Pass, some is also running discounts "on full seasons of our most popular TV series", inlcuding The Walking Dead, from October 30 to November 17.

When next Tuesday's 2.0 update hits for the PlayStation 4, Sony will finally turn one of the most ambitious promises it made when the console was first announced a reality. We're talking about Share Play, of course. We know: the ability to virtually hand a controller off to a pal via the internet and have them work through a game's tricky section for you sounds kinda like magic -- the type that only Disney is capable of. But, in theory it sounds pretty simple, and the catch-up king has recently released a video that walks through the process step by step. From the looks of it, the new feature is added as an option from the DualShock 4's Share button. Naturally. How well it all works in the wild, however, remains to be seen.

Sony has confirmed that the significant PS4 firmware update, version 2.0, will be released on October 28.
Dubbed the 'Masamune' update, the patch will add the long-awaited Share Play feature, which allows players to pass control of their game to another PS4 owner remotely via the internet.
The anticipated feature was first announced during the PS4 unveiling in February 2013, but missed the PS4 launch and was yet to surface on the console.
"Let's go from sitting back and watching friends play to actually jumping into games remotely and sharing great experiences together in real time," said Sony in an official announcement.
The PS4 firmware 2.0 update will also add video upload support for YouTube, along with "dedicated app support". The PS4's activity board, 'What's New', will also be revised.
The system will also get themes, a USB music player, much improved live broadcasting abilities, and a new way of finding friends on PS4.
The home menu will also see improvements. More details on the update can be found through here, along with a preview trailer.

PS3 owners will soon be able to buy entire series of TV shows for a single lump sum on PSN.
The digital marketplace’s Video Unlimited section will as of today allow people to buy access to specific TV series, even if some episodes have yet to be released. Once purchased a series will take up residence in the My Videos section of PSN, from where they can be accessed.
Until now, users had to buy individual episodes separately.
To mark the new feature some TV series, such as The Walking Dead, are due to go on sale.
The Season Pass should be available on PS3, on mobile and on the PSN website shortly with a rollout planned on PS4, Bravia TVs and some Blu-ray players “soon”.

Sony has issued a preview trailer for the PlayStation 4's impending "Masamune" update, due to hit consoles worldwide starting tomorrow.
After installing tomorrow's update, PS4 users can access the console's long-promised Share Play feature, which allows players to invite a friend to take over their gameplay or join as a remote co-op partner. Other new and revamped features promised in the video above include YouTube video uploads, voice commands, dashboard themes, a redesigned party interface, livestream browsing by game, and download pausing and resuming.
Sony will also launch a firmware update for the PS Vita and PlayStation TV later tonight, introducing the stream-viewing Live from PlayStation app for both devices and 4-player Remote Play support for the PS TV.

October 27th, 2014, 22:02 Posted By: wraggster
The idea behind Share Play, the most prominent feature of Sony's soon to arrive and feature-packed Firmware 2.0, is that it enables you to pass the controller to a friend as if you were sitting on the sofa together. Except the sofa is now the internet - if you're friends with someone, you can play multiplayer games with them, or even let them take control of your machine as if you'd physically handed them the pad. Anyone, anywhere. This is a platform specific feature too, so publishers will have to specifically opt out. Talking to Sony, even things like alphas and betas would require the feature to be turned off.
The option is accessed from the Share button menu, where there are two new choices: Give Controller to Player and Play a Game Together. In the demo the latter was used to play a two-player game of FIFA 15 across two machines connected across an internet connection (network requirements were diplomatically avoided but Sony did say it had been modelled on 'standard broadband connections'). Seeing it in action almost seemed to be too good to be true - no lag, no noticeable issues, not even any obvious way of knowing you weren't actually playing the game on the guest machine itself.
There are a few limitations, such as a 720p resolution and unspecified framerate cap to the host machine's stream, and a 60 minute limit to each sharing session. Both host and guest need to be PS Plus subscribers for the Play a Game Together mode as it's effectively multiplayer, while for the Give Controller to Player option, only the host needs to be a subscriber. Either way, for all intents and purposes while the game is shared, your friend might as well have a disc in the machine. There are other limitations - trophies are only earned on the host's account (and helpfully notifications only appear on their respective machines). To clarify what you can and can't do with a Shared game, Sony's message throughout the demo was that the new feature lets the guest do only 'what the host console does, no more'.
Sony has effectively made games free for anyone persistent enough to play through them in chunks.
Which is where that first option, Give Controller to Player, gets interesting. While the 60 minute limit to a Share session exists, there's nothing to stop you simply starting again as soon as it's up. If two gamers are motivated enough they can just keep sharing. In theory you could finish a game without ever owning it. True, you'll never earn the trophies, but Sony has effectively made games free for anyone persistent enough to play through it in chunks.
But what of other possibilities? Can't be bothered to earn a platinum? Or level up in Destiny? You could use Share Play to let someone else do it for you. It's a cynical view obviously but you've only got to look at MMO farming to see that it happens. It was especially interesting to see the post-demo conversation immediately throwing around potential ways to abuse the system. If there is a way, gamers will find it. A great example would be when the PS4's Share function first went live and people almost immediately found you could use PlayRoom to stream non-gaming content (in some cases to horrible effect).
Share Play, then, is a literal game changer, but while it might be the most prominent features of the new update it's only one of a range of new features. You'll be able to Share footage directly to YouTube now, for example (as long as you have a Google account). Whether that creates the same deluge of content it created for Twitch the first time round remains to be seen, but it's arguably a more significant addition than streaming originally was. On the Twitch side of things the interface has had a revamp, with featured content and the ability to follow favourite broadcasters.

If you are using multimedia devices option (an option to watch videos, music and pictures via wi fi in your house) that is on the console in the different sections 'Images' 'Music' 'Videos' . You may get this problem has occurred: the emergence of an annoying folder called 'Recycle.bin' . The solution to this problem is simple and I will teach next.

Nas and the developers have managed to bring proxima feat Vita Webkit on Ps4 and even with the latest Firmware, 1.76.
According proxima, the exploit is the same as the Vita, but it has been developed in parallel, it is not based on. Their POC code provides some examples, including a dumper and a few tools to create more ROP codes. However like on Vita at the moment, this feat is not very useful for the end user to see what will ensue, but this is the first exploit on Ps4. sephirothff Thanks for the information. The developer Codelion (aka @ BBalling1), one of the people behind the feat Webkit Vita release a tool for devs who want to play with the fault.
memtools_vita allows Dump the contents of the modules used by Webkit process, but for this special server CodeLion is required. Provides the readme explains how to do this (in English of course). However, at present, one of the known issues and that this tool does not allow Dump the executable code [data] section only. The ADA software for example do not like it, but it would be sufficient for further investigation and it seems, according to the readme, this section is still possible to dump. A Python now your servers. memtools_vita

Since 4.xx Firmware 3.56 and probably since, Sony Protected execution of QA Flag in ecdsa and could no longer be accessed from GameOS (impossible to write the token).
Habib wanted to understand why it was easy, since Linux and VUART orders, write the Token but not since GameOS and he succeeded. He now presents his ToolBox update 1.02.01. new / fixed: - Dump the Lv1 - Lv2 from the Exchange "usb000" or "dev_flash" - Activation of Qa Flag The archive contains the ToolBox for Firmware 4.65 and 'standalone application for 4.21 and higher as well as the source code of this little world. Own a PlayStation 4? Today's your day: the console's big 2.0 update is finally live. Sony's been teasing the update for weeks, lauding the console's new ability to play music from a USB drive, the availability of system menu themes and promising new voice commands, party options and a less crowded home-screen. The update also gives the console's unique "share" button a little more power: the ability to upload video clips directly to YouTube and, most notably, remotely stream your games to a friend over the internet. Sony invited me to try some of these features ahead of today's launch and, yes, they all seem to work just fine -- at least in a controlled environment.

Though today's PlayStation 4 system update brings with it a host of new features - most notably Share Play functionality - the new software has also been causing problems for a number of users.
As Videogamer points out, numerous reports of issues stemming from the 2.0 update have appeared across the spectrum of social media. On NeoGAF, PlayStation 4 owners are reporting problems ranging from odd volume fluctuations to issues connecting to YouTube to an inability to play previously purchased games. Responses to Sony Europe's PlayStation.blog announcement include players unable to sign in to the PlayStation Network following the update.
Despite these reports, these issues seem to affect a relatively small number of PlayStation 4 owners, though our own Alexander Sliwinski is one of them. We've attempted to reach Sony for more information on these update issues and its plans to fix them, but have yet to receive a response. If you're having an issue with your PS4 post-update, let us know in the comments.

The PlayStation 4's latest update, codenamed "Masamune," adds a major feature,Share Play, to the console today. PlayStation Plus members can now share their games over PSN with friends that don't own a copy (and aren't necessarily PS Plus subscribers themselves unless both are playing), hosting one-hour play sessions at a time. As a Sony rep confirmed to Video Gamer, Share Play sessions are capped at 720p and will "have a limited frame rate" for friends partaking in the action, while those hosting the game will still see 1080p games on their screens at the full resolution.
SCEE product planning manager Kazuhiro Yanase said that while Share Play "doesn't require any super-fast broadband," the company won't disclose recommended upload and download speeds for those looking to share games sessions with friends over PSN. "The internet environment is really different user by user. For example, some users will be using a LAN cable, some users will be using Wi-Fi, sometimes you use the microwave in your house," Yanase told Video Gamer. "It's very difficult for us to guarantee you can use Share Play if you have [a certain] speed."
Today's update also adds the ability to play music from a USB device with support for MP3 and AAC file types. The Masamune update introduces YouTube as an option for gameplay clip uploading as well as home screen themes. We've reached out to Sony to confirm the Share Play restrictions and will update as we learn more.

To coincide with the significant PS4 firmware update 2.0 released today, PS Vita and PS TV have also received new system firmware.
Available now, the Vita update version 3.35 adds four-player Remote Play functionality to the PS TV micro-console, finally enabling multiplayer options for play over a remote connection to PS4.
It also adds the Live from PlayStation app, allowing you to watch live streams of PS4 games on your Vita and PS TV.
Completing a trio of updates, Sony has also released version 2.0 of the mobile PlayStation App for smart devices. The update includes a completely redesigned home screen and a new layout for tablet devices.
Earlier in October Sony added the ability to apply themes to the Vita's home menu with Vita system firmware update 3.30.
This comes after the release of the release of PS4 firmware update 2.0, which adds significant new features including Share Play, YouTube uploads, improved live streaming options, home menu themes and more.

November brings PS4 owners a final tide of big 2014 releases like Assassin't Creed Unity and Little Big Planet 3, but it also brings PS Plus subscribers some slick downloadables like the long-percolating Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.
Sitting alongside Isaac on PS4 is Image & Form's SteamWorld Dig: A Fistful of Dirt. While you spend an inordinate amount of time underground in both games, Isaachas you exploring adorably grotesque, randomly-generated dungeons whileSteamWorld has you digging through an interconnected, sprawling cave system under an Old West town.
PlayStation 3 owners get a hearty selection of games as well. Luftrausers, Vlambeer's minimalist dogfighting escapade, joins strategy shooter Frozen Synapse Prime on Sony's elder statesman console. PS Vita owners can pick up The Hungry Horde as well as the tricky, creepy launch game Escape Plan. Lucky for them, Luftrausers, Rebirth, and SteamWorld are all Cross Buy on the platform as well. Vita owners with PS Plus are going to have a busy Thanksgiving.

If you're rooting for Sony to pull through recent tough times, it's still a cliffhanger, according to its latest earnings report. On the plus side, PS4 sales have been stellar, up 83 percent over last year at 310 billion yen ($2.8 billion). The good news drops off sharply from there, however, especially with mobile. Though sales in that division were up slightly from last year, it managed to lose 172 billion yen ($1.5 billion). Since most of Sony's other divisions fared okay, that means its 86 billion yen ($770 million) operating loss can be directly chalked up to its mobile division. Though it warned investors that smartphone sales would be dismal, Sony decided nevertheless decided to fire its mobile division's CEO, Kunimasa Suzuki, and replace him with VP Hiroki Totoki.
Update: Additional figures from Sony have shown us just how well the PlayStation 4 is doing: the company says it's sold 3.3 million over the past quarter. For contrast, Microsoft announced combined Xbox 360 and Xbox One shipments of 2.4 million in its latest financial results.

Take-Two delays testing as players report problems with latest Sony platform update
Sony
Sony launched the 2.0 version of the PlayStation 4 firmware earlier this week, but the system update has not gone smoothly. As reported by GameSpot, some users have complained that after the update has been applied, the system loses the ability to wake up from standby mode. Additionally, the YouTube video sharing functionality seems to be broken.
Adding insult to injury for PS4 players, Take-Two today announced that it has postponed the alpha test for its upcoming online team-based game, Evolve. "[We are experiencing difficulties with the Evolve Big Alpha on PlayStation 4," the publisher said on the game's official site. The PC and Xbox One alpha testing periods for the game launched today, as expected.
A Sony representative had not responded to a request for comment as of press time.
The PS4 2.0 firmware was released on Tuesday, and added a variety of features to the system. Among the added functionality was Share Play, which let players join their friends' games for co-op play even if they don't own the title in question. (It also lets players virtually hand their controller over to a friend online, letting them play through tricky parts of a game in their stead.) The update also allows for players to use the Share button on the controller to upload video to YouTube, play music tracks off a USB memory stick, and more.

Sony reveals current subscription service numbers, plans to bring PlayStation to Chinese market next year
Sony
In the past, Sony has been cagey about just how many PlayStation Plus subscribers it has. But in a post-earnings conference call with overseas investors today, Sony executives confirmed that the PS Plus service has reached 7.9 million members.
It's unclear exactly how many of those subscribers are PlayStation 4 owners, but earlier this year Sony CEO Kaz Hirai said approximately half of the new console's owners had signed up. The PS Plus service is required for online multiplayer in most PS4 games (free-to-play titles being one exception), but also gives users access to an assortment of free downloadable games, discounts, and cloud storage for game saves. PlayStation 3, PlayStation TV, and/or PlayStation Vita owners can get those same perks, with the exception of online multiplayer, which is already free on those platforms.
Elsewhere in the call, Sony's representatives referenced the Game and Network Service division's strong performance for the recent quarter, saying the launches of FIFA 15 and Destiny helped build momentum that they hope to carry into the holiday season. They also discussed plans to entire the Chinese market, saying they are "seriously evaluating the game business" there, and plan to enter the market early next year. While they acknowledged Microsoft has already launched Xbox One in the country, Sony is taking a "cautious, step-by-step" approach in light of China's powerful regulatory agencies.

If your PlayStation 4 is behaving badly after this week's 2.0 update, Reddit user Nestledrink has a potential fix that may get your ailing console back up and running.
The fix is for users who are unable to wake their PlayStation 4s up from Rest Mode. You'll see your console constantly blinking an orange light if you're affected, and your system will be unresponsive if you attempt to power it on or press the PS button on a DualShock 4 controller.
If this is the case, Nestledrink recommends powering down the console by pressing the power button for seven seconds, then engaging Safe Mode by holding the power button for another seven seconds afterward. From there, you can select the third option on the screen that appears in order to reinstall the latest firmware update, which should hopefully fix the problem.
While the method isn't guaranteed to fix all PlayStation 4 issues, one Joystiq staffer was able to resuscitate their console by following the steps above, and confirms that their PS4 is now back in action. If your PS4 is still unresponsive, try contacting Sony support for further assistance.
