Marvelous, after docking executive pay and selling off Rising Star Games, is scaling back video game development. The Valhalla Knights and No More Heroes publisher only has ten packaged games planned for fiscal year 2011 – that’s the period between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2011.
Four of those games are for PSP. Delayed games, Ikki Tousen: Xross Impact and Fate/Extra account for half of that number. That means two PSP games are in the works plus two Wii games and two PlayStation 3 titles.
Actually, make that one unannounced PS3 title. No More Heroes: Heroes’ Paradise, which was also held back for the current fiscal year, wrestled its way into stores in April. The No More Heroes port is also Marvelous’ only Xbox 360 game for this year.
Marvelous used to support the Nintendo DS with a stream of strategy RPGs and farming sims. Not this year. Harvest Moon: Twins’ Village will be their only DS title. Like most of their 2010 lineup, Harvest Moon: Twins’ Village also slipped into this fiscal period.
So, Marvelous has five games left to reveal. I’m betting one of the PSP games is a Hitman Reborn fighting game. Marvelous releases at least one of those every year. The other four titles – two Wii, one PSP, and one PS3 game are anyone’s guess.

If you've ever found yourself in the proverbial club (perhaps with a bottle full of bub), then you may be familiar with Pentavision's DJ Max -- a Beatmania-like music-rhythm series with some of the most intense gameplay in the genre. Today, PM Studios has announced it will publish DJ Max Portable 3 in the US.
PM Studios promises "more than 50 songs, unique modes, customizable options, and a yet to be announced new feature." The game is set to launch sometime in 2010 on UMD and as a download on PSN.

Guerrilla Games' Steven Ter Heide has told a relieved Eurogamer that swearing has been curtailed for Killzone 3.
Not completely, but the contrast to Killzone 2 will be dramatic.
"Yes!" blurted Ter Heide when asked if there will be less potty-mouthed antics in Killzone 3. "Our sound director is here today and we said to him, 'Go through the entire database and, anything that's got s*** or f*** in it, just get rid of it - we don't want to hear it ever again!"
Ter Heide went on to explain that Killzone 3 was still "firmly aiming" to be an 18-rated game.
"Yes, definitely. That's a lot to do with the violence and things like the brutal melee system. We're firmly aiming for an 18," he said.
"But we feel the dialogue in there shouldn't be gratuitous; it should be about advancing the story and natural responses. It shouldn't be off-the-scale swearing.
"We've toned it down a little bit to make sure that the story comes across in the way we wanted it to come across," he added. "That's definitely one of the points we took on board from Killzone 2."

Guerrilla Games boss Hermen Hulst believes Killzone 3 pushes the PlayStation 3 hardware to capacity.
"We're pushing 100 per cent right now," Hulst told VG247. "You see, there's steam coming out of the machine, almost. All the stuff that we're squeezing, it's got everything to do with the scale and the environments and the action that you're seeing on the screen right now.
"As I was talking about earlier in the presentation, we're having a footprint of a level that's ten times bigger than the average Killzone 2 level. Killzone 2 was not a small game, but that was as far as we could push it back then.
"We're going way overboard this time around," he added, "and I think we're reaching the kind of maximum that we can do. But we always do that. We always find a way to go above and beyond."
Guerrilla Games will benefit from PS3 developer tools used by other first-party Sony studios Sony Santa Monica (God of War III) and Naughty Dog (Uncharted 2).

Our BFFs over at Joystiq have what seems to be a pretty solid line on PSN+, with multiple sources verifying features mostly in line with what was gleaned from that survey last year. Lucky for us, most of the features seem to have to do with giving new features to paying users, instead of taking away functionality from the existing free service. Notables include exclusive DLC, PSP Minis, and PSone Classics, "first hour" demo access, Sony Protection Plan service, and cross-game voice chat. The sources seem to be less clear on pricing for all these goodies, but someone tossed out a speculative $9.99. What everyone does seem to agree on is that we should be seeing this announced in full at Sony's E3 media briefing a few weeks from now, so start stashing those Hamiltons!

Sony Computer Entertainment America has secured a deal with Time Warner's HBO channel to offer programmes such as True Blood, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage on the PlayStation 3.
Eleven HBO series' will be on offer to begin with, with content to be added every Tuesday. The shows will air around 11 months after premiering on the HBO network, around the same time they appear on DVD, and will sell for a premium price of $2.99 per episode.
"HBO is a high-profile content provider, and a real premium service, so we think this really reinforces that the PlayStation is more than just a videogame console now," said Jack Tretton, chief executive of Sony PlayStation, speaking to NASDAQ.
"It gives consumers that big-screen, HD experience in the home on a device other than cable and satellite, and that's becoming the norm now as opposed to the exception. Networks like HBO can be beholden to the cable and satellite companies, or they can play wherever the consumers play."
The time lag between broadcast on HBO and the PlayStation 3 will help continue to serve cable and satellite subscribers, said HBO president Henry McGee, who said that digital distirbution is a growing part of the HBO business.
"We can use this platform to reinforce the premium positioning for HBO," he said. "The download business in general has become an important profit contributor for us. It's not yet nearly as large as the physical sales channel, but the trend is a good one."

Though we can expect a big presence for recently revealed FPS Killzone 3 at E3 next month, one site is claiming that it won’t see the light of day at retail until May 2011.
The report comes from CVG, which also states that the game will definitely be compatible with the PlayStation Move – something not touched upon in yesterday’s reveal. Other details include the confirmation of four player online co-op and playable vehicles in the online mode.
The game has previously been touted for an April 2011 release – a move that would square it off against Microsoft's rival single-platform epic Gears of War 3.
Expect all of these questions to be answered at E3 next month.

Sony Computer Entertainment America's senior vice president of publisher relations has revealed in a candid interview that more can be done to make a success of the downloadable PSP Minis games. The Minis titles were established as an alternative to the likes of iPhone Apps and DSiWare releases.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Rob Dyer revealed that he feels the Minis have not yet met with their full potential: "I think it's gone okay. My concern with Minis always has been if you have a PSP or a PS3, do you want to play small bite-sized games like that? I think the jury's still out. I think in some instances they do, and some instances they don't."
Dyer also revealed concern that too many Minis titles are simply ported from iPhone, without enough done to re-appropriate them for the specifics of the PSP platform. However, Dyer did praise the efforts of Sony's European team with regard to working with developers in the mobile sector to interest the studios in creating Minis games.
"We've got to continue," stated Dyer, later saying of the Minis initiative: "It's not like you have to spend a lot more money in order to get something that has a lot more impact for the platform."
Downloadable Mini's games are only available in a special section of the PlayStation Store, and must have a file size of under 100mb to qualify.

In partnership with our friends at eastasiasoft, we are excited to provide you with a couple of first-hand information about their latest creation, Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype. The sequel to the well-acclaimed 2D shooting game Soldner-X: Himmelssturmer is hitting the PlayStation®3 system as a PlayStation®Store download exclusive later this week.
Twenty years after the Virus Wars, you return to Gota IV as part of the newly formed Soldner-X defense force.
Your mission: to free the galaxy from the D'aarg, a technologically superior race that is threatening mankind.
Staged across seven unique action-loaded levels, Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype delivers a must-have, shoot' em up experience, blending classic gameplay with the astonishing audio-visual capabilities of the PlayStation®3 system.
Unique dynamic play rank system
One of the most unique features of the game is its dynamic score-linked play rank system.
To make Soldner-X 2 fair to new players, and challenging for those who like to get the maximum out of the game, the play rank system measures the player's performance and automatically adjusts the game's dynamic difficulty setting, which is then reflected in the play rank.
All play ranks are linked to a score multiplier. The higher the play rank, the bigger the score multiplier. In other words, better ranks can and will eventually lead to (much) higher scores.
Challenge mode & unlockables
Soldner-X 2: Final Prototype has a lot of unlockables and added replay value. Apart from your usual hunt for trophies, you will unlock new stages, weapons, playerships and other cool stuff. A lot of these rewards are linked to the new challenge mode that is introduced in Soldner-X 2.
You will encounter a total of 17 challenges, including "playing through the first three stages of the game without losing any ship", "clearing the game on a fixed play rank" and other tough tasks.

Atlus re-translated, remastered, and re-released Shin Megami Tensei: Persona in North America last year. The game still hasn’t been picked up by a PAL publisher, but Persona may be on the horizon.
And… on PlayStation 3? That’s what a rating from Australia’s OFLC says. A PlayStation 3 version of Shin Megami Tensei: Persona has not been announced by Atlus, however. Despite the “Shin Megami Tensei” header in title, it’s possible this rating could be for a PsOne classic re-release, but we don’t think Atlus wants to revisit that localization job.
This could be a mistake and the rating is likely, in my humble opinion, for the PSP version of Shin Megami Tensei: Persona. Either way, this is going to be a digital release. The OFLC notes Atlus USA is the “publisher” while Atlus doesn’t have an office in the land down under.
In both cases, Australian and probably European Shin Megami Tensei fans will get to play the very first Persona game someday in the future. The question is what platform(s) will it appear on.

Prison inmates have a history of being gruesomely resourceful hackers. The toothbrush shiv comes immediately to mind. One such inmate in the UK wanted to offer tattoos to his fellow convicts so he came up with a tattoo gun using a PlayStation for parts. The crude setup involves a sharpened ballpoint pen and the use one of the motors from the optical drive to move it up and down. The inmate didn’t document his work for us but there are other examples of this method available. Even with modern hardware, ink seems a little 20th century when compared to laser tats.

SCEA's publisher relations boss Rob Dyer has said Sony's approval process will not tolerate lazy ports of Wii games for the PlayStation Move controller due out later this year.
Dyer says the platform holder will do everything it can to improve games that inevitably will shift over from Wii, and prevent the rush of shovelware titles that plague the Wii catalogue.
"We'll do everything we can, whether it's up-res, add trophies, and do things and make it network-only so you don't see it on a disc, but at the same time, we don't have to approve it if we don't want to go down that path," said Dyer.
He went on to say Sony will tell developers to rebuild any ports to implement Move's specific strengths and features before it makes a PS3 Blu-ray release.
"If it's day and date, we'll work with them on it. If it's a port, then we'll move it a step, to the network. Unless it's something that they've done an incredible amount of adjusting... We want to be a one-to-one experience," said Dyer.
"The Wii doesn't have a camera. We've got a camera. Use that camera, implement that in there. A lot of these guys don't want to. They just want to use the accelerometer and say, well... No. Not gonna happen. It doesn't work that way. Put the camera in there, make it work with that, get your trophies, up-res is, put some more content in, come on down."
Move was originally due for release around now, but was officially delayed to "autumn" of 2010. All the official details were revealed at the firm's GDC Move conference which you can watch in full here.
Move will be available in three different bundles; standalone for those who already have the PS Eye; with the camera and a PS3; or with the camera and a game (which Sony notes will cost under $100).

After a weekend leak saw many of the details hit the web way ahead of the June embargo, Sony has officially lifted the lid on Killzone 3 – it’s fully stereoscopic 3D PS3 shooter.
The official release confirms the details revealed by Game Informer, including the use of new hand-to-hand combat mechanics and jetpacks.
The narrative will resume from where Killzone 2 left off with Helghast dictator Visari lying dead at the feet of soldiers Sev and Rico.
Unfortunately, the nuclear bomb used to take out the Helghan Capital Phyruss has also heavily depleted the ISA forces, leaving just a small squad to take on the Helghast army.
Killzone 3’s levels are said to be ten times larges than those found in the last game, with one setting “taking the battle into space”.
There’s still no word on the release date, with both Q4 and April next year remaining strong contenders.

A source close to Sony has confirmed to MCV that the reason behind the more recent of Gran Turismo 5’s delays is the implementation of both 3D and Move compatibility.
The news helps to explain the somewhat bewildering claim made by the game’s chief designer Kazunori Yamauchi earlier this month that the game, which has been in development for several years, is still only 90 per cent complete.
Rumours of both Move and 3D compatibility first arose in April when Yamauchi confessed that Polyphony Digital is “always attuned to new technologies”, adding that “if there are display devices or peripherals that seem interesting, I'm sure we'll work to support them”.
