News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/04/03/s...s-compo-entry/
We are getting more and more entries for the PSP genesis competition, remember that you have until May, 15th to polish/submit your homebrew, and the prizes represent a total of more than 4500$!
This entry for the PSP Genesis competition by orezero is a fun little game. Don’t get stopped by the menus in Chinese, playing the game is very straightforward, and definitely lots of fun. This might remind you of Geometry Wars, Bugz, or even RealtechVR’s Freeesh. Although the game is not yet at the same level as the ones I mentioned, it is instant fun, and great for casual players.

It may sound patently obvious at this point, but there's still cause to celebrate -- Sony's streaming subscription music service, Music Unlimited, is headed to both the PlayStation Portable and its pair of divergent spiritual successors the Next Generation Portable and Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play.Eurogamer sat down with Sony Network Entertainment VP Shawn Layden, who spread the news readily, confirming that the service would be activated (at least in the UK) on PlayStation Portable "in a matter of weeks." Meanwhile, Android phones including the infamous PlayStation handset will get Music Unlimited "this year," and SNE "will make it happen" on the NGP as well, presumably sometime after the company reveals when its beast of a portable game station will actually come out. All in the name of taking your tunes with you wherever you happen to travel -- a concept that's getting rather popular right now.

A series of reports from various sources have shown that Sony's PlayStation 3 is now likely to have a larger global install base than its Microsoft rival, although both still trail behind Nintendo's Wii in all territories.
Market research firm Strategy Analytics published its global figures, indicating that the PS3 surpassed Xbox 360 in lifetime sales at the end of 2010, reaching 43.4 million. The same report lists Xbox 360's install base at that time as 42.9 million. Nintendo's Wii stands well clear at 75.5 million.
In the UK and US, Microsoft is still winning the tussle with Sony, but in Europe and Asia, the figures claim PS3 is more popular. A separate report, from IDG and quoted by GameStop in its recent yearly report, says that there are 14.7 million PS3s in Europe but only 13.7 million 360s.
Quoted in the same GameStop document, sourced from NPD, are figures from the end of 2010 which put 15.4 million PS3s in the US, but 25.4 million Xbox 360s.
"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft's Xbox 360 strategy, the console's performance outside of the US continues to disappoint," said the author of the Strategy Analytics report, Jia Wu.
"Global demand for Sony's PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years," Gamasutra quotes the report as saying, recommending that Microsoft "continue[s] to innovate around its motion sensor technology, which will become increasingly relevant in the smart home era."
A similar, UK specific report published yesterday by the ERA showed the PS3 gaining ground on the 360 too, with a declining Wii in first.

Sony Ericsson looks to make waves with a strong gaming offering
The Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, the world's first PlayStation certified smartphone, launched today supported by dozens of games ported from the nineties console.
The Android powered smartphone is available today in the UK, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, and will be launching in six further territories over the next two weeks.
The model's chief USP will clearly be its strength in gaming – apparently partnerships with 20 publishers have already been signed to keep a steady stream of games available.
Retro PlayStation titles available include Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby, Jumping Jack Flash, MediEvil, and Syphon Filter.
Dominic Neil-Dwyer, head of market development at Sony Ericsson said: “It’s great to get Xperia PLAY into consumers’ hands at last. This is just the start and the future is exciting based on all the interest and support we have from the game industry. A steady stream of fresh innovative content will be coming to Xperia PLAY over the coming months.”

Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play isn't having the best of starts in the world, having been delayed by UK carrier O2 due to "software issues," and it's now missing its targeted launch date of April 1st with two more of the local operators, Vodafone and Three. Both have today announced that, due to shipping issues, they won't be able to meet tomorrow's launch date -- leaving only Orange on track to release it on time. T-Mobile, Orange's partner in Everything Everywhere, says it'll have the Xperia Play in "mid-April." Still, the wait isn't that much longer as Three hopes to sell you a Play "early next week" and Vodafone, a bit more cautiously, is shooting for availability "as soon as possible."

If there was one thing that bothered us most about the Xperia Play, it was the dearth of original PlayStation games we could, you know, play on it. That's getting a shot in the arm tonight with the introduction of five PS One titles to the Android Market: Syphon Filter, MediEvil, Cool Boarders 2,Destruction Derby, and Jumping Flash. Each is priced at £3.99 in the UK, with the first two games on the list also being available in five languages. That pricing translates to $6.38 when the games are accessed from the US, but we imagine the final pricing may differ once the Xperia Play lands stateside. And yes, the Xperia Play will be your only way to access these for now (R800i is its codename), leaving the rest of us Android PS One lovers with a bunch of games to envy and one less emulator to enjoy. The Android giveth, and the Android taketh away.

Millions enjoy the PlayStation 3 for the video games they play on it, but according to Sony it is wrong to describe the console as a game machine.
A more appropriate description, according to one Sony executive, is "entertainment media hub".
"We're trying to turn the PlayStation 3 into an entertainment media hub where you can not only play your games and get online with your Call of Duty community, but also find movies, find music, and bring that across," Sony Network Entertainment boss Shawn Layden told Eurogamer.
"People like to explore. Gamers are explorers. I worked with PlayStation for 14 years before I took on this position with Sony Network Entertainment. I started back in 1996. It was just that grey rectangle with the toaster lid on it. You threw the disc in and brought the waffle iron down, and that's it, you're good to go.
"Game machine is the wrong description these days. Console can mean so many things. It's a central hub if you will for all kinds of digital content."
Sony has attempted to broaden the traditional PlayStation audience in recent years with the addition of non-gaming applications to the PlayStation 3.
Cloud-based music subscription service Music Unlimited, which Layden runs, is just one example. You can rent and buy movies, view photos, edit video, watch music videos and watch telly through your PS3, too.
14.7 million PlayStation 3s have been sold throughout Europe. As of 25th January 2011, there were over 69 million registered PlayStation Network accounts worldwide.

Vodaphone is the second UK carrier to delay the release of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play.
According to a customer message forwarded to VG247, the company stated that "Sony Ericsson have advised us that they will not be able to supply the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play to meet the original launch date of 1 April."
Last week 02 said it would not be releasing the new phone handset - which supports PSone games - due to bugs in the software.
Vodafone said it is currently unable to provide an alternative release date for the phone.
"We are working closely with Sony Ericsson to ensure your phone is delivered as soon as possible and we will be in touch again with specific timescales when we know more. We appreciate this is disappointing and are doing our very best to resolve this as quickly as possible."

Sony has confirmed plans to launch its cloud-based music service, Music Unlimited, on PSP2 and is due to go live on the current PSP in weeks.
The service landed on PS3 in Europelast December, and in US in February this year. Music Unlimited gives you access to over six million music tracks all via a cloud service - which means it streams straight to your console, negating the need to ever store music on your hard drive. It costs $9.99 monthly for the premium service, while the basic service is $3.99.
The service is now set to spring to life on your PSP "in a matter of weeks", Sony has confirmed.
"The heart of the offering here is that with the one account you can access this music on your TV, your PS3, your laptop, your Blu-ray player, and have your music follow you wherever you go, rather than having to download all of your music into a device and make that device go with you everywhere," said Sony Network Entertainment boss Shawn Layden to Eurogamer.
When asked about the service coming to NGP, he said: "We will make it happen," adding, "there are still very few details that have come out in the marketplace about the launch. The folks at Sony Computer Entertainment will have a big reveal of exactly what the scope of that entire feature set is going to be.
"But yes, our services need to be available on that device. It's a very powerful device and it would be an incredibly good platform for us."

Production of ambitious MMO The Agency discontinued as Denver, Seattle and Tucson teams shutdown
As expected, Sony Online Entertainment has made deep cuts to its organisation today.
205 developers have been let go as three studios - in Denver, Seattle and Tucson - are shut down.
Spy MMO The Agency has been dropped as part of the shrink, with teams now refocused on erstwhile brands EverQuest and PlanetSide.
Games made at the Denver and Tuscon studios will 'transition' to the HQ in San Diego, which remains, as does the Austin team.
The firm looks after a raft of MMOs after pioneering the genre with the first EverQuest.
Licensed titles Star Wars The Clone Wars, DC Universe Online (made in Austin), James Patterson Catch a Killer and Magic The Gathering will still run also.
Fast growing kids' MMO Free Realms is also safe.
Although originally an independent part of the Sony business, SOE was recently put under PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai's remit and integrated into the firm's network services division.
The full statement from SOE reads:
"As part of a strategic decision to reduce costs and streamline its global workforce, SOE announced today that it will eliminate 205 positions and close its Denver, Seattle and Tucson studios.
"As part of this restructuring, SOE is discontinuing production of The Agency so it can focus development resources on delivering two new MMOs based on its renowned PlanetSide and EverQuest properties, while also maintaining its current portfolio of online games. All possible steps are being taken to ensure team members affected by the transition are treated with appropriate concern.
"This strategic decision will have no impact on SOE's current portfolio of live games; additionally SOE will transition development efforts for the Denver and Tucson studios' suite of products to its San Diego headquarters."
"This strategic alignment of development resources better positions SOE to remain a global leader in online gaming and deliver on its promise of creating entertaining games for players of all ages, and servicing the 20 million players that visited SOE servers in just the past year."

Sony's Crackle has had a more successful life so far than its previous iteration as Grouper, streamingmovies, TV shows and shorts to various devices since launching back in '07 and announced today its full library will be streaming to the PS3, Roku boxes, Sony Blu-ray players and Bravia TVs. Expanding full access from just the Google TV (there's also an Android app that currently streams some of the items) it's taking credit as the only provider offering free full length flicks including Ghostbusters, Bad Boys, A Few Good Men and more for free on these platforms. The drawbacks are video that tops out at 480p standard definition and Hulu-style commercial interruptions but if you absolutely must watch Weekend at Bernies II without spending any money it is an option -- at least, as long as the PS3 browser doesn't crash with an out of memory error like it did for us. It did work better on more capable platforms, so check out the full details in the press release after the break.

Now you can reserve that Storm Trooper uniform. While the Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Star Wars: Original Trilogy and Star Wars: Prequel Trilogy Blu-ray sets were originally announced with a release date of September and later popped up in retailer databases for September 27th, it has settled in for a September 16th arrival. Blu-ray.com points out that's a Friday which should open things up for plenty of retailer events around the launch and leave fans with the entire weekend to tear through the movies and all the extras coming along with them, no time off of work needed. Star Wars.com has also been updated with the new date so we're confident this one will stick, update your calendars and preorder plans accordingly.READ MORE

The PSP has narrowly missed retaking the weekly Japanese hardware crown just a month after the launch of the 3DS.
According to the latest Media Create data, as posted on Andriasang, the PSP sold 50,479 units last week compared to 50,710 3DS purchases. Nintendo's new console shifted 61,394 the week before, with its lifetime Japanese sales now sitting at 792,954.
The PlayStation 3 came in at third with 28,973, followed by the DS at 19,094 and Wii at 11,808. The Xbox 360 managed to bring in 1,963 new users.
Worrying figures for Nintendo. Supply issues are not to blame for the slump - the platform holder confirmed the system was in stock in Japanese stores when contacted by Eurogamer for clarification.
UK and US sales numbers for the 3DS aren't in yet, although Nintendo has claimed the new portable is its fastest selling handheld ever.
The PSP was up from 23,511 last week, with the release of Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection no doubt spurring the system on.
Square's repackaged RPG topped the software charts, selling 104,173 in its debut week. The rest of the top 10 looked like this:
- Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection (PSP, Square Enix): 104,173 / NEW
- Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, Koei Tecmo): 36.548 / 357.113 (-46%)
- Gundam: The 3D Battle (3DS, Bandai Namco): 23.500 / NEW
- Dissidia: 012 (Duodecim) Final Fantasy (PSP, Square Enix): 21.741 / 403.912 (-30%)
- Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP, Capcom): 16.444 / 4.401.653 (+11%)
- Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (3DS, Level 5): 16.294 / 242.649 (-12%)
- Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity (PSP, SEGA): 14.403 / 300.418 (-11%)
- Nintendogs + Cats: French Bulldog / Shiba / Toy Poodle & New Friends (3DS, Nintendo): 13.219 / 160.742 (-10%)
- SD Gundam G Generation: World (PSP, Bandai Namco): 10.160 / 283.802 (-29%)
- Pokemon Black / White (DS, Pokemon Co.): 10.025 / 5.127.678 (+16%)

There are no new demos on the PlayStation Store this week, but there are new games, new special offers and downloadable content by the truck load.
The games to focus on are 8/10 action puzzler Swarm - made by DeathSpank and Penny Arcade Adventures studio Hothead - and The 3rd Birthday. The latter is a showy PSP crime shooter by Square Enix that involves a steamy, "erotic" shower scene.
Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime turned out to be a load of old ectoplasm (4/10 - Eurogamer).
There are new cars for new and good (8/10 - Eurogamer) racing game Shift 2: Unleashed. And DragonForce's wheat/chafe separator "Through The Fire And Flames" arrives for Rock Band 3. This made headlines way back with Guitar Hero III - how times have changed.
Disappointing final Mass Effect 2 DLC, The Arrival (5/10 - Eurogamer), also shows its face.
And would you look at the obscene amount of DLC for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters - are you sure it's not a free-to-play game, EA?
