Sony was recently awarded another minor victory in its continuing legal action against George "GeoHot" Hotz and his distribution of a workaround allowing users to jailbreak their PS3s. Federal Magistrate Joseph Spero decided Thursday to allow Sony to subpoena Hotz's web provider to acquire the IP addresses of any of GeoHot.com visitors from January 2009 through present day. Sony was also given subpoenas for information from Google, YouTube and Twitter.
Magistrate Spero explained the information obtained by the subpoena would be used to measure the extent of the "defendant's distribution" of the jailbreak files, as well as settle whether Sony must sue Hotz in New Jersey or San Francisco -- the former being Hotz's home state, and the latter being the region in which Sony argues the files were most downloaded. The jurisdiction of the suit will be settled in court during a hearing in San Francisco next month.

When Sony hacked $50 from the PSP Go's price earlier this week, it didn't exactly trumpet the news, and now it's looking like a permanent $150 MSRP for the UMD-less handheld was too good to be true. Text across Sony's website has silently been changed to reflect a $199.99 price point for both colors of the sliding-screen system, and there seems to be no remaining evidence that Sony ever dropped the price at all. Still, we imagine it's only a matter of time before such a price cut becomes officially official, as the PSP-3000's the no-brainer choice if you're buying a PSP right now -- it's a full $70 cheaper than the less-capable Go.

How long has the successor to PSP been in the works? According to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, "since the beginning of 2008." The timing coincides with the first rumors about the device, which (correctly) predicted the system's lack of a UMD drive, touch screen and dual analog support.
Yoshida also explained that Worldwide Studios had been officially involved with NGP game development since then, too, which helps explain the dearth of first-party content for the original PSP beginning in 2008. According to Wikipedia, Sony has released only 16 first-party games for the PSP in the last two years -- about the same number of games it had ready for the system's launch.
While Sony is working on delivering triple-A titles for the NGP launch, Yoshida noted that first-party teams are also working on "short form games" for PlayStation Suite, Sony's upcoming cross-platform service for NGP and Android. Given the last game we recall Sony ever developing for a non-PlayStation device was Wipeout 64, that's certainly an historic move.

Zelda OLB is finally out of beta and available for DOWNLOAD. This new version (1.0) has two bug fixes (thanks to azerty62131 for finding the map bug). I also added full screen support. Due to a bug in the PSP's SDL library, the screen mode can only be set once after the SDL initialization, or the library crashes. If you try the wide screen mode and don't like it you will have to quit and restart the game to select the normal 4x3 mode. I also removed the extra buffering for speed reasons, and have not noticed any real problems with doing that.
Note: You have to copy over ALL of the files to your PSP to fix both bugs, not just the Eboot.
I have begun work on the last game in the trilogy (Zelda - Time to Triumph), and expect to have a beta version out in a couple of weeks.

News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/03/03/d...-about-tn-hen/
A quick post to calm down some news about me and Magixien breaking up….we still love each other very much, and he hasn’t filed any divorce papers yet .
A few days ago I contacted TN who told me he wasn’t sure if he would release TN Hen D, which I reported in my blog. This article was true (which can easily be proven since I’m the first one who published the changelog for TN Hen D, before pspgen) , and based on a series of emails Total_Noob and myself personally exchanged.
However an article posted a few hours ago on pspgen stated that TN Hen D will in fact be released, unlike what some “sites with no credibility” were claiming.
I’m convinced the article in pspgen is not targeting my website, but other random websites that claimed to have exclusive interviews with Total_Noob. There’s also a message from Magixien in the pspgen forum saying that I didn’t start this rumor, but he implies that I helped to spread it, which isn’t true, and I hope I made my point clear about that in the pspgen forums.
I’ve known Magixien for a little while now, and I can surely recognize pspgen’s artificial drama articles when I see them. Being in the middle of one of those is like a dream come true
Yes I did contact TN, and yes 3 days ago he was still unsure about the release of his latest HEN, I don’t think I have to prove anything given how long I’ve been in the scene (That and the fact that I was the first beta tester of Total_Noob’s work). I won’t copy/paste his entire email because it did contain personal stuff, but just because he wasn’t sure 3 days ago doesn’t mean he didn’t change his mind recently.
Actually, the confusion comes from the fact that the sites targeted by pspgen’s article are so unknown that nobody even cared to check about them, and therefore people automatically assumed pspgen was targeting me, that I started a rumor, while all I did was making sure it was true by directly contacting Total_Noob. And again, at the time I wrote this article, its content was true. I’m also convinced that the many supportive messages you guys posted here or on /talk helped TN to take his decision.
Anyways, the only thing that matters is that Total_Noob reacted positively to the massive support you guys demonstrated and the release of the new TN HEN D will be done on Friday, and really, that’s what counts
Personal message to Total_Noob: man, if you ever read that, I’m so sorry for all the drama, that was definitely not the goal, and I know you don’t need that on top of all the haters. But hey, it definitely shows people care about your work

More people are splashing more cash on the PlayStation Store than ever before, Sony has revealed.
Your frivolous spending lead to a 70 per cent fatter annual take for Sony's virtual shop last year than in 2009, Sony America's Pierre Gravereau divulged at GDC (reported by Joystiq).
The upward surge can be attributed to various things. For instance, there are more PSN accounts and therefore potential shoppers: Gravereau puts the PSN account number at 70 million. There were also 60 per cent more shoppers nosing around the PlayStation Store last year.
That's because over 80 per cent of the 41.6 million PS3 owners around the world are connected to the internet. Psst, Pierre, there are actually 47.9 million PS3 owners around the world.
Also, the weekly PlayStation Store updates these days offer an enviable, coordinated stack of content. Take a look this Wednesday's update - it's stuffed.
No concrete figures from Gravereau to mull over, unfortunately, but percentages make for a nice pie-chart. And I really like pies.

First-person shooter phenomenon Call of Duty: Black Ops is the best-selling PlayStation 3 game ever, Activision has claimed.
The gargantuan game company cited data from NPD, ChartTrack and GfK as it announced that the First Strike downloadable content had hit the PlayStation Network.
Activision failed, however, to reveal specific sales for the PS3 version of the game.
Black Ops beats PS3-exclusive simulation racer Gran Turismo 5 (6.37 million), Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (5.2 million), Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (4.75 million), Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Naughty Dog's Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (over 3.8 million copies worldwide) in the illustrious list of PS3 best-sellers.
Black Ops is the fastest-selling videogame of all time across all formats.
The Treyarch created military shooter made entertainment history in November last year when it shattered theatrical box office, book and videogame sales records for five-day opening worldwide sell through in dollars, selling more than $650 million.
The PS3 console first went on sale in November 2006.

Sony has confirmed the size of the proprietary memory cards used in the Next Generation Portable, revealing that games will come on cards with 2GB and 4GB capacities.
The two SKUs at retail could suggest that boxed games would sell for two different price points. A high end Next Generation Portable game will use 4GB of memory - compared to 9GB for an average PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game, according to David Coombes, platform designer for SCEA.
The system will also support removable memory cards for downloadable content such as music and video, "and they will come in a variety of sizes, probably quite a bit bigger," offered Coombes.
Showing off a number of tech and game demos at GDC in San Francisco today, Coombes was not prepared to detail internal memory for the system, stating only that it would be closer to the PlayStation 3 in terms of RAM rather than the current-gen PSP.
The NGP itself will come in at least two different models, one supporting 3G services, the other just wi-fi. Interestingly, Coombes claimed that for location-based gaming and services, the wi-fi model would be a better solution in built-up areas where it can hook up to wi-fi hotspots.
"For the wi-fi models you can still do pretty accurate positioning. In urban areas that ends up being more accurate than GPS, because GPS needs to see the sky so inside a shopping mall it won't work, where wi-fi would," he said.
While some areas of the specialist press have reported that the NPG is comparable to the PlayStation 3 when it comes to performance, Coombes said that from a design perspective Sony has to be "constantly worried about battery life, we have to be constantly worried about power use."
"It's not going to be as powerful as the PS3 because the battery would last five minutes. And probably set fire to your pants," he joked.
As well as Uncharted for NGP, Bigbig Studios demoed the system's back-mounted touch panel with their Little Deviants game, and augmented reality features was highlighted with a giant "next generation dinosaur" superimposed in the conference centre amongst attendees.

Sony has lifted the lid on the rumoured PlayStation Move server - a piece of software known as Move.Me, which allows limited use of the motion controller on PC in order to create new games and applications for it.
The software is designed for "hobbyists and academics", claimed Sony senior engineer John McCutchan on the PlayStation Blog, and grants access to "the exact the same data that licensed developers have."
He claimed that "Even before PlayStation Move was publicly available to all of you, we were talking about the device's potential implications for academics and researchers. Move.Me... is an opportunity for PlayStation to inspire new, revolutionary applications in other fields beyond gaming."
Rather than running directly on PC, Move.Me involves running special server software on a PS3, which then communicates Move data to a nearby computer via LAN.
"We hope it will be used to discover new ways of connecting individuals with information, and maybe even discovering a new healthcare application or two."
Move.Me may, of course, also open up the controller to the same kind of inventive hacks as have been seen on Microsoft's rival Kinect. No release date is available as yet.

It may not be the first time you've been able to snag a PSP Go for $150, but you can now rest assured that you'll never pay anything more than that, as Sony has officially knocked another $50 off the handheld's list price. That follows a similar $50 price drop back in October (not to mention a $40 price cut to the regular PSP just last week), although that doesn't seem to have done a whole lot to boost sales of the download-only device. Will this new low, low price make a bigger difference? And, if not, how much lower can it go before a certain quad-core monster really makes its presence felt?

It's tough to get solid numbers out of Sony for hardware sales, usually they're cloaked behind a vague "shipped" figure, but at GDC this week the company gave us one rather impressive number: 41 million. That's the number of PS3 consoles the company says it has sold worldwide, and over 80 percent are sucking down data from ye olde internet. Confirming the moneymaking trend we heard about last month, in 2010 the PlayStation store saw a 60 percent boost in traffic and a 70 percent boost in revenue from a total of 70 million PSN accounts. Let's see... 70 million PSN user accounts, 41 million PS3 consoles, 80 percent of which are online -- that means almost everyone has one account for gaming and a second for griefing. Sounds about right.

PlayStation Portable action game Gods Eater Burst is a GAME exclusive in the UK, Namco Bandai has announced.
It goes on sale on 18th March.
Gods Eater Burst first went on sale in Japan last year, where it did really rather well.
It plays similarly to Capcom's phenomenally successful Monster Hunter, but there's a big storyline with voice over work and everything.
You battle against Aragami, powerful god-like creatures, hence the God Eaters moniker.

It includes five all new maps: Berlin Wall; Discovery; Kowloon; Stadium; and Ascension, which features zombies.
US developer Certain Affinity designed and built Discovery and Stadium in collaboration with Treyarch.
The First Strike DLC is due out on PC before the end of March.

Latest engine iteration to support PS3 and NGP development
Sony has revealed the PhyreEngine 3.0, the latest iteration of its games engine, at the GDC 2011.
The engine comes complete with source code development tools that are available under license to interested developers and publishers.
Sony have touted several new features of the 3.0 iteration and tools, including a new asset pipeline and processing tool, a rewritten level editor, ‘more accessible’ API and support for entities, scripting, and integrated physics and navigation components.
The engine also integrates with middleware tech from several of Sony’s business partners, including Havok, Nvidia and Scaleform.
“We're very happy to see the popularity of PhyreEngine with the global game developer community” said SCEI technology platform SVP Teiji Yutaka.
“It has helped demonstrate our commitment to the game developer community and in particular enable smaller independent developers and publishers to flourish on PS3 and NGP.”

In order to show developers precisely what NGP is capable of – and to break up the fifty plus slides used in the one hour presentation! – Sony shared three live demos of NGP software and we dutifully recorded them.
Apologies for the poor quality of the NGP screen – the combination of the bright OLED screen being captured on video, piped to a conference center projector, and then in turn captured by our camera has resulted in some ... less than stellar video quality. But you will be able to glean the input mechanics and the style of gameplay (or in the case of the augmented reality demo, dinosaurplay). Check out videos of Little Deviants, Uncharted Portable, and augmented reality after the break.

March 3rd, 2011, 00:25 Posted By: wraggster
A number of prominent Japanese developers have commented on their hopes and expectations for Sony's NGP console, in a new feature in games magazine Famitsu.
As translated by website Andriasang, the feature begins with an overview of the hardware from Impress Watch technology expert Zenji Nishikawa. He notes that the NGP takes the opposite approach from the PlayStation 3 by using existing technology rather than bespoke chipsets. He estimates the price of the device at ¥25,000 (£187), the same as the Nintendo 3DS in Japan.
The feature then continues with a series of comments from prominent developers. Level-5 director Jiro Ishii suggests that the NGP could 'accelerate the movement away from consoles' and that he is interested in using the side touch panels and 3G network features to make an episodic adventure game with weekly installments.
Although the NGP's 3G functionality has already caused some controversy, with Nintendo suggesting it could limit the format's userbase, most of the Japanese developers in the feature seemed to consider it a key feature for the format. For example, Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase expressed interest in creating a role-playing game that utilised a constant online connection.
Although most of the comments were positive Sega producer Satoshi Sakai expressed concern about the rising production costs involved in the NGP. He suggested that companies would increasingly turn to downloadable titles in order to remain profitable.
Konami director Akari Uchida predicted that the release of the NGP would see games become more casual, as a result of the communication options offered by online play.
Team Ninja's Yousuke Hayashi suggested that the NGP would mean an end to differentiating between games played at home and on the move, with users able to continue playing the same game on the NGP and PlayStation 3.
Famitsu also ran a poll that revealed that 39 per cent of retailers wanted the NGP, and 76 per cent of readers. Those polled believed that the NGP's visual power and the dual analogue controllers were the console's most notable features. The most wanted game franchises for the platform were Monster Hunter, Metal Gear, and Final Fantasy.

Sony may be able to continue shipping PlayStation 3 consoles into Europe, despite the injunction brought against it by LG.
The rival electronics firm has managed to bar European PS3 shipments due to a patent war over Blu-Ray technology - thought to be a response to an earlier legal challenge by Sony regarding LG mobile phones.
However, the Guardian reveals that European patent fragmentation may mean imports can continue were Sony to move its port of entry.
Currently, PS3s arrive primarily via Amsterdam and Rotterdam. LG's injunction applies to the Netherlands, and not to the entirety of Europe - so Sony could continue shipments if an alternative destination is found.
Were Sony to move port, LG retains the option to seek injunctions in other European nations. The PS3 firm may need to keep its new entry-point a temporary secret in order to keep one step ahead of LG. The efficacy of a sustained chase may depend on Sony's willpower in moving around the estimated 100,000 weekly consoles required to keep up with demand, and on whether other EU member states agree with the Dutch ruling.
Prejudgment seizures, which Sony seeks to avoid by steering clear of Dutch ports, are far less common outside of the Netherlands. While LG could achieve the same effect with preliminary injunctions, the PlayStation-maker would have more scope to defend itself against such an order.
Sony currently has around two to three weeks' of stock at European retail, and LG's initial victory only lasts 10 days. However, the option to extend to ban remains. In the event Sony was found guilty of patent infringement, it would be required to pay a fee for every PS3 sold globally to date.

March 2nd, 2011, 23:53 Posted By: wraggster
Ngmoco boss Neil Young has expressed concern that the new Sony and Nintendo handhelds may be in for a tough fight against newer mobile platforms such as the iPhone.
"I think they're clearly hurt," he said of Sony to Industry Gamers. "I think PSP is done and the new [NGP] is dead on arrival.
"It's really difficult to compete with an app store that has hundreds of thousands of applications and a wide range of options where the average price paid is around $1.20 and there are tens, if not hundreds of thousands of free applications that are really high quality. So I just don't think Sony's going to be able to compete with that."
While he was clear that "it's not like it's crap at playing games – it's pretty good at playing games and it can do a whole bunch of other things as well," he felt the sheer versatility of Apple's mobile devices would keep them more appealing that a more dedicated gaming handheld.
He was more optimistic about Nintendo's 3DS, launched this weekend in Japan, claiming it was "likely to be competitive" but "the 3D piece of the puzzle is kind of gimmicky."
Nonetheless, "Nintendo has great franchises and there are tens of millions of people who want to participate in those franchises, so that always helps... But the real question is the degree to which there's a third-party community."
Ngmoco was recently bought by Japanese mobile giant DeNA, and plans to bring its Mobage social network for smartphones to the West.
