News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/03/21/f...s-compo-entry/
Shaolan’s entry to the PSP Genesis competition is a Lumines clone. The game has nice ideas being worked on, but what we get here is a demo, which contains only one level, and, as far as I could test, no sound (which, well, makes it a bit different from advertised, but still a nice time-killer on the train for casual gamers like me).
Hopefully this project will grow, as the graphics are very nice already

News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/03/21/s...ding-the-word/
Update: a few points of clarification: this article, as most articles on my blog, is a personal opinion. I am not a journalist, and this is not a news website. I am disappointed as a (long time) customer by Sony’s attitude (not only in this lawsuit, but in general), so I decided to raise my voice, as a customer and a developer. I decided to stop buying Sony’s products, but I am not calling for a boycott of any kind. I just wanted to show that not everybody agrees with what Sony is currently doing, and I expect some of the readers of this article to disagree with me, this is how we can get interesting discussions on the subject. The more people talk about it, the best. The worst would be for this lawsuit to go under the radar.
Sony America is suing Geohot for the whole PS3 jailbreak thing. Hopefully my opinion on the subject is clear: I believe Sony deserve to lose this lawsuit.
I’ll try to give details below, by discussing a few arguments I’ve seen on the internet.
Sony have no choice but to lock their system if they want to protect their business
The goal of most hackers around the world is to give freedom to hardware/software owners. The goal of hardware/software companies, like all companies, is to make money. These two goals are not incompatible. Some software and hardware companies manage to make lots of profits without locking their system. Like it or not, Windows is a good example of such a system. Last time I checked, you are still allowed to run Openoffice on windows. You are still allowed to run Skype. You are still allowed to run Firefox. Actually, the last time Microsoft even tried to make their own product more “visible” on their own platform, it backfired.
I’m shocked that companies such as Sony or Apple haven’t been sued by the European Commision yet, given how devices such as the iPhone or the PS3 revolve around a huge customer locking system (locking the user in a hardware/software/distribution system vicious circle).
Sony have no choice but to lock their system in order to protect game developers and the future of video gaming
Ask that to real game developers, not to Sony. One of the major reasons for Sony to lock their gaming system is to have control on both the customers and the game developers. By adding a DRM system to their console, they guarantee that game developers cannot sell a game for the PS3 without Sony getting a good share of the money. They are also using their huge power on the video game market to ensure that they get exclusive content (at least for a given period of time, such as Final Fantasy 13), preventing the devs from making money on other platforms. They are not trying to protect video games, but their business.
Systems such as Android, Windows, or Linux, prove that you can have a system with lots of applications and games, without locking the hardware in a single distribution system.
Hackers do this for piracy, and cheating in games
In their lawsuit against Geohot, Sony are using clever marketing techniques to make Geohot look like the bad guy. One of the most obvious ones is the major confusion (blindfully transmitted by so-called “technological websites”) that they intentionally create between hackers, cheaters, and pirates.
Hackers are people who like to understand how their hardware works. If the PS3 was a car, being a hacker would be equivalent to opening your trunk and see how the engine works, or tweak the engine in order for it to work with solar energy rather than gasoline.
(Online) cheaters are the guys who headshot you in Modern Warfare. Let me make one thing clear: Hackers and Cheaters are NEVER the same guys, because hackers rarely spend their time playing, and when they do, they are ethical about it. If the PS3 were a car, cheaters would be the people taking a parking spot for the handicapped, or not stopping at the red light, just because they think it’s fun.
Pirates are the people who play illegal copies of games. If the PS3 were a car, pirates would be the people using the highway for free. They don’t contribute to the cost of the highway, making it more expensive for the other users. Again, I tend to believe that hackers are not pirates, because they have other fish to fry.
My point here, beside the crappy car metaphor, is that Sony is trying to have “normal” customers believe that hackers are the same thing as pirates and cheaters, which is not the case. They are suing the wrong guy.
The PS3 hack by Geohot and fail0verflow made the PS3 gaming experience less enjoyable because of online cheaters
Hackers did not put the bad programming in the PS3 security system, it was here in the first place, and they just found it. The same goes for game cheats such as Modern Warfare issues online. It’s not hackers’ fault if this game had a badly programmed security scheme. Additionally, hackers such as Geohot or fail0verfl0w did not program these cheating tools.
It’s a well known fact in all IT companies that security in online systems should be handled on the server side. Would you trust a bank that does a credit card number validation on the client side instead of the server side? No. The same should go for video games. Given the price we pay for such video games, the least we could expect is these companies to do their jobs correctly on all levels, including security.
The hackers should have kept the hack for themselves
There are many ways to deal with a security issue. Of course, in a usual security flaw case, it would have been best if the hackers had contacted Sony, let them know about the issue, give Sony a few months to fix the issue (if possible), and then reveal it publicly. But I think Geohot/failoverflow’s reasons became a bit personal with the removal of linux too. So, (and that’s a very personal opinion), I believe Sony started this, and the way the hack was announced was a way of letting them know that removing Linux was a very bad move (that, and other things they do to their customers).
As far as not disclosing the vulnerability at all… well, I’d say we’re very lucky that people like Fail0verfl0w or geohot are the ones who discovered this flaw. For all you know, other people had discovered this before them, and were using it for bad things. Keep in mind that you enter your credit card number on your PS3 whenever you buy a game, or if you use the browser to visit your bank account. I personally am happier that this went public, rather than having the wrong people knowing about the issue. At least Sony knows about the issue, and hopefully they are monitoring more closely the things that could be done with this.
If you don’t like the way the PS3 works, buy a computer instead, and leave the PS3 alone, gamers don’t care about your fight
one of the many legal things the PS3 prevents me from doing: playing legally owned French DVDs
There are many things I don’t like in this statement, and unfortunately I’ve seen this statement in many places, I also got such remarks from very close friends. First the PS3 IS a computer. Removing the mouse and the keyboard don’t make it different. So why should it follow different rules and laws from your normal PC?
Second, the PS3 was falsely advertised as many things it is not: “the best bluray player on the market” (I can’t play region 2 blu rays that I legally bought, while my PC can), “linux support” (it was removed a few months ago, with no choice for the customers but to upgrade), or “it only does everything” (there are so many things it doesn’t do because of Sony’s locks, I can’t enumerate them, but, I’ll go with running homebrews). This led customers such as me to buy it, and become constantly disappointed by its limitations, or by the TOS changes that Sony forces on their customers, without a choice to make. Overall, what the PS3 can or cannot do is very obscure for the end customer, and absolutely not in line with the advertising that is made about it. If I had known about the many limitations of the PS3 beforehand, I wouldn’t have bought it. Sure, I wasn’t expecting it to play homebrews, but I was absolutely shocked to not be able to play PAL DVDs, for example (especially since I’m convinced it’s a software lock, that could easily be tweaked).
"The PS3 is the best Blu-ray player on the market" - Peter Dille, Vice President, SCEA
Third, Sony have such a big share in the gaming market with the PS3 that it is difficult to avoid buying a PS3 if you’re a gamer. What are my choices if I’m a big Final Fantasy fan, but I hate Sony’s policy? With the way Sony secures some exclusive contents, and their “you have to upgrade” policy, as a gamer and a customer, you sometimes have to make a choice that you shouldn’t have to make (namely, losing the possibility of using OtherOS in this case)
Hackers are bad, they are ruining the business of a good company, just for fun. Sony is just trying to protect their business.
Companies like Sony, as I said above, are trying to make profit, this is what a company is for. To do that, they don’t hesitate to use nasty tricks, such as stealing intellectual property from other companies, installing viruses on people’s computers, installing crapware on the computers they sell… Many companies such as Sony try to go beyond the boundaries of the law, in the hope that they won’t get noticed, or that people won’t care. It is true that most of the time people don’t care, and when they do, they are usually not rich enough to fight back, given the costs of the legal system in most countries of the world.
In other words, the fact that a big company does something does NOT mean it is legal.
The DMCA in the U.S. is the result of major lobbying from companies that obviously didn’t care too much about customers protection, but their own interests. The fact that something is legal doesn’t mean it is always right. The DMCA law was voted very recently (1998, that’s recent for a law), and has shown its many flaws in the past. Most of the time, this law is abused by companies like Sony in order to prevent people from using the content they paid for, the way they want to use it. Because this law is very new and far from being perfect, a case such as this one is an opportunity to stand for the rights of customers. This is not only about Sony and PS3 piracy, but about the rights to own the content and the hardware we paid for.
conclusion
I’m really pissed at Sony for what they’re doing now. I believe they’ve screwed me many times as a customer, and suing a hacker puts the nail in the coffin for me. For now, I will stop buying any Sony product until this lawsuit ends up in a positive way. By positive, I mean a way for people to get homebrews to run on their PS3 if they want to, or, as Geohot stated, putting OtherOS back on ALL models of PS3 (including the slim), and a public apology for ever taking it out in the first place.
I’ve already started boycotting Sony products. I was looking for a life insurance 2 weeks ago. The most interesting one was from Sony’s insurance subsidiary (Sony Life). I put it in the trash can immediately, and ended up choosing another one. This represents roughly 4.5 million Yen (about 40’000 euros) that won’t go into Sony’s pocket, just because of this lawsuit.
Sony is suing the wrong guy, because it’s easier to sue a hacker than thousands of pirates. Because they were hurt in their pride, realizing that security through obscurity is not a good thing, they decided to react as a bully, by suing an individual, hoping he wouldn’t even try to fight back. I’m proud that a guy like Geohot does indeed fight back, and I hope Sony lose this battle, for the sake of customers’ rights in the future.
Geohot had warned Sony that even though most customers wouldn’t care about this whole lawsuit, developers would care, and would remember when the day comes to choose a company. Maybe he was right.
Geohot was accepting donations for his fight, donations are now closed, but watch his website closely for the next round.

It's official! Against all odds, Sony Ericsson has finally ended its nearly year-long streak ofembarrassing leaks, missed opportunities, and terrible advertising and come out the other side with this: a series of excellent ads for its "PlayStation Certified" Xperia Play phone.
Spokeswoman (and comedian!) Kristen Schaal walks you through some of the phone's strongest features in a series of five ads, all found after the break. Did you know the Xperia Play is the perfect phone for downloading apps, looking at kitten pictures, editing spreadsheets, and watching YouTube? Neither did we. But it's also got a slide-out gamepad, which Ms. Schaal is all too happy to show off.
Hey, Kristen ... do you mind if we call you Kristen? We know a guy you'd probably get along great with. Kristen, meet KB. KB, Kristen.

Sony Ericsson's next great thing, the Xperia Play, has just appeared on Vodafone UK's pages as its newest pre-order treat. Vodafone's Xperia Play will ship with six preloaded games including Crash Bandicoot, Fifa 10, Star Battalion, Tetris, Sims 3, and Bruce Lee on the included 8GB memory card -- and includes some unnamed "desk stand" if pre-ordered before April 1st. We're kinda curious if any of you out there are going to jump on this newest Android 2.3 toy, so feel free to let us know what you think in the comments below.

It has begun. The Xperia Play, a device that promises to take mobile gaming to its next level of awesomeness, just scooped itself a one-month exclusive on a brand new action adventure game.BackStab, produced by mobile game makers Gameloft, has a "free roaming 3D environment" (old school 3D, not the fancy new stuff), filled with some decidedly yummy-looking graphics and what appears to be an emphasis on battling multiple enemies at once. All we're seeing here reminds us of desktop or console games, not the usual mobile fare, so we're most intrigued to see this game in action. It'll hit all of Android eventually, but for the first 30 or so days after its launch in Q2 2011, it'll be only on Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play. Check it out in the gallery below.

There will be nearly 30 3D-enabled games on the PlayStation 3 by the end of 2011, Sony has promised.
A graphic posted on the PlayStation Blog titled "The Year of 3D" made the pledge, pointing at Uncharted 3, SOCOM 4 and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One as among the highlights.
It also provided some stats to show how 3D uptake on the console was gathering pace.
Apparently 20 per cent of all Killzone 3 single player demo downloads were in 3D, and there were more than 83,000 downloads of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 2011: The 3-D Experience Exclusive Sneak Peek in one week earlier this year.
"Apparently, we're not the only ones ready for winter to be over," commented Sony communications manager J T Tidwell.
"PS3 continues to serve as the home for all things 3D entertainment," he added elsewhere in the blog post. Come this Friday, Nintendo might have something to say about that.

Somehow, Square Enix seems to have been convinced to actually release its old games on PSOne Classics. Last week's Parasite Eve is being followed with another gem out of the company's back catalog this week: Legend of Mana.
The sidequest-heavy, somewhat open-ended Legend, which allows players to use "Artifacts" to create and then explore in-game areas, may not have been as well-received as the SNES's Secret of Mana, but it's certainly not a bad game either. And it's much better suited for PSOne Classics release anyway, since it was a PlayStation game.

We're filling the time between now and the NGP's holiday season release the best way we know how: by hunting down yet more information about it. Andrew House, the man in charge of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, has delivered the latest tidbit in an interview with MCV, where he states unequivocally that every game on the next PlayStation Portable will be available to buy as a download. Notably, he also expresses Sony's desire to have simultaneous distribution in both digital and physical channels, but that sounds a lot less concrete than his promise that every game will be downloadable. Digital-only games also figure prominently in Andrew's vision of the NGP's future, as he expects them to diversify choice for consumers alongside the big time titles like Uncharted. To learn more about Sony's replacement of UMDs with flash memory and the reasoning behind the PlayStation Suite, follow the source link below for the full interview.

Sony Ericsson explains why it thinks it offers a viable alternative to iPhone
The marketing boss of Sony Ericsson UK has confirmed to MCV that downloadable games for the Xperia Play will be available for between £1 and £10.
David Hilton also explained why he thinks the device can successfully fight for market share against behemoths such as the iPhone.
"The main thing is to offer something different," he told MCV. "iPhone is a hugely popular product and Angry Birds on iPhone is a delight.
"But now the hardware allows you to play far more complex games. You don’t want to be playing these with your fingers all over the screen. You want full visibility and the ability to control the games with the sort of interfaces you have on your games console."
There was also some insight into how consumers will access the games.
"As soon as you slide open the phone, the screen will go into a game finder app that will show you all the games you own and all the games you can download," he added. "What we have heard about Android is that locating games in the marketplace is a struggle. So we have created this app to easily navigate through the games."
Six games will come pre-loaded onto the handset – FIFA 10, Crash bandicoot, The Sims 3, Tetris, Star Battalion and Bruce Lee Dragon Warriors.

The PSN's to undergo some minor maintenance work this afternoon from 3-6pm, but all services should be unaffected.
"The PSN should still be accessible during this period," a community moderator said on the PlayStation forums, although they added that "a small number" of users may experience errors attempting to download content during the period.
If you run into an error message saying "80022f10 - communication with server failed", just start the download process again "and this content should go through as normal", they said.
"If anyone experiences any issues purchasing content during this period they should attempt the purchase after 18.00PM GMT when the maintenance should be completed."
Castle Crashers, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Age of Zombies and Dead Nation emerged as the victors in the first PlayStation Network Gamers' Choice Awards earlier this month.

Neil Young highlights Microsoft as the strongest platform holder
The founder of mobile gaming outfit ngmoco has suggested that Sony's position in the hardware space is weak in contrast to its contemporaries Microsoft and Nintendo.
Speaking to IndustryGamers, Neil Young said he believed Sony is 'in trouble' insofar as console platforms are concerned, and pointed to Microsoft as the platform holder with the strongest future.
"In the hardware world, I think Sony’s massively out of position. I think they’re in trouble. I think Microsoft’s in much better shape," stated Young.
"They understand cloud computing; the Xbox Live service is a world-class service, and they’ve got a foothold in mobile, albeit a tenuous one. I think they’re in better shape," he added, before turning his attention to Nintendo.
"I think Nintendo always has the benefit of its franchises, but I don’t think it ends up being a really rich ecosystem for third parties," said the ngmoco CEO.
With the form the forthcoming consoles will take currently a relative mystery, which platform holder will enter the next generation in the strongest position is becoming an increasingly important topic.

Filip messaged me last week and sadly like always i do forget to read my PMs, he told me about the release of his new game Fish Fillets for the PSP:
This is a PSP port of the wonderful puzzle game Fish Fillets from ALTAR interactive.
PSP port is based on a cross-platform game engine recreation by open-source community.
The official homepage of Fish Fillets NG is http://fillets.sourceforge.net/
Game description:
One of the most hardcore puzzle game. Find a way out for two fish agents.
Fish Fillets NG is a puzzle game. The goal in each level is to find a safe way out for both of the two fish. It's comparable to other sliding puzzle games such as sokoban and klotski. In Fish Fillets the play is complicated by a few additional elements and rules. The game has background music and, on many levels, some animated effects, though neither normally has an effect on game play.
* one of the most hardcore puzzle game you can ever play
* 13 languages - English, Czech, French, German, Italian, Polish, Spanish, Dutch, Bulgarian, Swedish, Slovenian, Brazilian, Russian
* 80 pixel-drawn polished unique levels
* hundreds of beatiful animated creatures
* thousands of unique and funny objects
* 2 fish agents with different capabilities
* hundreds of the different sounds
* thousands lines of the funny conversations
* several branches and several mysteries for a smoother progress
* hours and hours of gameplay
* amazingly detailed and colored graphics
* lots of cute little companions

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2011/03/19/...and-6-3x-cfws/
You know with the PSPgo how you’re able to save the exact state of any game, exit out to the XMB to do whatever and return to said game later on, picking up exactly where you left off, regardless of checkpoints, save points etc. You remember the days before PSPgo when Dark_AleX released PspStates for 5.00 M33, which did exactly as the PSPgo, only with the ability to save more than one game state at a time? Back in the day Total_Noob also released a modified version of PspStates for 5.50 GEN. If you’ve been a longtime reader you know exactly what’s up, and if you’re a newcomer, get a load of PspStates because neur0n has released a patched version for 6.20 HEN and 6.3X CFW.
Note: PspStates is only compatible with models succeeding the “Fat” PSP-1000; models with more RAM. Refer to the included readme.txt (the original from Dark_AleX) to learn what’s what.
Update: This just in from @Toddimyre —
According to the readme in the new PSP States, Dark Alex says to flash “umdcache.prx”. I’ve found that you can just disable, “UMD Cache” in “System Settings” and skip flashing “umdcache.prx”.

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2011/03/18/...ew-psp-plugin/
A developer going by the name USpeed has released a handy plugin, particularly handy for those who share their PSP with siblings and/or other peeps. If that’s you then you should give USpeed’s Profile Manager a run. Profile Manager creates separate, customizable profiles for each user (up to 20) and most importantly keeps your game saves safe and isolated from one another.
Install
- Copy “profileManager.prx” to “PSP/sepugins”
- Edit “PSP/seplugins/vsh.txt” and/or “PSP/seplugins/game.txt” to add the line “ms0:/seplugins/profileManager.prx 1″
- Reboot your PSP.
How’s it work?
- USpeed Profile Manager will switch between all folders “SAVEDATA_<NUMBER>” in order to activate current profile on “SAVEDATA” folder.
- The plugin can manage up to 20 different profiles (folders “SAVEDATA_<NUMBER>”)
- Current profile is on “SAVEDATA” folder to work with standard.
- A savegame in folder “USPM20110315″ will allow to customize your name, icon and colors.
How to customize your profile
- Go to “PSP/SAVEGAME/USPM20110315″ or “PSP/SAVEGAME_<NUMBER>/USPM20110315″
- Change “profile.bmp” picture but keep image size to 28x28px and resolution at 24 bits in BITMAP format.
- Edit “profile.infos” as you like:
- “name” : profile name that is displayed (up to 15 chars, truncated after !)
- “box” : frame color (hexa value like “FF0000″ for red)
- “border” : border color (hexa value like “FF0000″ for red)
- “text” : name text color (hexa value like “FF0000″ for red)
Controls
- Press “Square” button (and keep it pressed) to display “USpeed Profile Manager”.
- Once displayed, you can change current profile to which you want by pressing “L” or “R” trigger.
- Release “square” button when you’ve made your selection.
- Once your profile is selected you can stop the plugin by pressing “L” and “R” simultaneously

News via http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/devki...1ght-v2-83630/
Miigotu has started some new really good stuff for the current and upcoming developers out there and also not to forget, the whole scene. The DevKit PRO has been put together by tons of his work as well as from the work of others particularly in PSL1GHT sources, of course. Well, that’s how the all new PSL1GHT-V2 comes to light.
[01:08] its a devkit with psl1ghtv2, using an installer on windows
[01:08] psl1ght-v2 we are still working to port some things
[01:09] but the rest is rock solid
To make it clear this is an excerpt from DevkitPRO-Addons git.
This project aims to create a set of addons for devkitPRO, to be released in an installer application for windows and possibly linux later.
DevkitWIN:
A customized install of mingw right inside the devkitpro folder and preconfigured, for compiling or cross compiling in new toolchains or tools.
DevkitPS3 comprising of :
PPU toolchain
SPU toolchain
PSL1ght-v2
PPU Extended Libraries
SPU Extended Libraries
These compnents are based on on shakgur’s toolchain script which was refined from ooPo’s ps3toolchain, shagkur’s psl1ght-v2 derived form psl1ght and my extension and adaptation of ooPo’s ps3libraries.
Well, with that in hand, you can expect some exciting homebrews coming to the scene from them.
[01:10] ps3gui (port of libwiigui), a proper lv2 patcher, ps3flow etc.
[01:10] maybe some adding of sprx plugins ^
[01:10] like the custom prx on psp did
[01:11] Private Paste - Pastie
[01:12] pune has libwiigui completely ported to ps3
[01:13] WiiXplorer - WiiBrew
[01:13] the gui can look like that
[01:14] he has it functional, im sure he is buttoning things up
[01:14] he wrote a connect4 game that shows it off
If you are on Windows and also want to develop something for the PS3, DevkitPRO-Addons is just perfect for you. Just in case though, if you don’t want to install PSL1GHT-V2 you can always compile the old one. Further explanation from Miigotu himself below.
[01:21] they will just have to set $PS3DEV and $PSL1GHT because we dont use those variables, but old psl1ght does
[01:22] heh i put alot of work into getting git to be proper on windows
[01:22] they should remove all mingw and msysgit or w/e too
[01:26] also, if you browse into a git repo it will show what branch ur on
[01:26] (requires one shell restart before it works)
[01:27] bleh everything git just works xD
Alright, enough with that, let’s get straight to the downloadable installer that you’ve been waiting for. Just a reminder, the installer is still in BETA and as you can read above, the PSL1GHT-V2 is still not 100% functional yet. Again, not 100%.

“We are expecting sporadic PSN maintenance from approx 9am-3pm PST Thursday 03/17/2011. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
That message was the last thing that CFW users got to see today, later after the network was back up everyone found they been kicked off their PSN!
Sony has finally enabled the new v3.60 auth system which was found hiding in the new firmware they had released last week!
So long and thanks for all the fish....

Coldbird has posted some news concerning his up and coming Custom firmware for the PSP, heres what he said:
Sheesh, I always underestimate how much work this is… I really doubt I will get this done today, but I’m hoping for a Betatest next weekend.
Either way… things are rounding up quite nicely for the PRO-C online test code for God Eater Burst!
I’ve finished the necessary kernel aswell as user code for the PSP client-side, it now operates on a trigger basis, leaving only the server code to get refactored, very nice indeed.
I must admit I spent a lot of time sitting in my chair with a notebook (paper, not tech) and a pencil, making sketches on how I want the thing to work… this really helped in laying out the necessary code to get things wrapped up the way it is now.
As always, I will keep you guys updated.
PS. My partner VF brews on something very special for you guys too, I’m sure you guys will be surprised when it’s out.
See you around~
