A 21st-century take on the ancient Apple II classic Choplifter is about to touch down, courtesy of Hunted: The Demon's Forge developer inXile Entertainment.
The game, titled Choplifter HD, will launch in the Autumn on PC and PlayStation Network.
For those too young to remember, the Broderbund-developed original launched on the Apple II way back in 1982 and saw you ferrying hostages between enemy bases and your HQ. It was a huge hit and was later ported to every system under the sun, including a 1985 arcade take courtesy of SEGA.
The new version will feature 20 missions, ranging from extracting captured POWs to saving survivors of viral outbreaks. The trailer below should add a little more colour.
"First playing and loving the original Choplifter on my Apple II, then watching the franchise expand into arcades and the early console systems helped seed my passion for building lasting, quality gameplay experiences," commented inXile boss Brian Fargo.
"The feedback on creating a fresh take on Choplifter has been incredibly positive. We all have so many fond memories of playing the first game and the fun of rescuing people in hostile situations is timeless."

Warhawk 2 is currently in development for PlayStation 3 with a 2012 launch rumoured, according to a new report.
Just Push Start has claimed that Sony recently invited a selection of players of the 2007 PlayStation 3 original to take a look at an early build of the sequel.
A few scraps of gameplay information has since seeped out of that showcase. Apparently the title will feature a story mode and full co-op. There will be online multiplayer support for up 32 players over 25 maps.
Players will supposedly be able to build bunkers for themselves, though they can destroyed by the enemy, while improvements have been made to the combat system, camera and graphics engine too.
All this shouldn't come as a huge surprise. Developer Lightbox Interactive teased a new project earlier this year. That game was thought to be called Starhawk judging by a trademark filing, though it now seems the developer has switched to the less ambiguous Warhawk 2.
"Keeping the new game under wraps for this long is tough, and very hard on our fans. But will be worth it all in the end!!" Tweeted President Dylan Jobe.
The original Warhawk launched on PSone back in 1995. The franchise was then rebooted for PlayStation 3 in 2007, scoring 8/10 from Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter.

March 28th, 2011, 21:31 Posted By: wraggster
UPDATE: The BBFC lists a release date for Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition: 24th June 2011.
While we're at it, we'll point out it has Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D down for release on 17th June.
ORIGINAL STORY: The British Board of Film Classification has confirmed the launch of Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition in the UK.
The BBFC's listing mentions anime animator Jiro Kanai as director, suggesting the Arcade Edition includes new intro and outro movies.
Predictably, the game was passed with no cuts made.
Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono has teased the launch of the Arcade Edition, which includes four new playable characters, for months now.
Speaking to Eurogamer ahead of the launch of Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition last Thursday, Ono said: "Well, if you think I'm a tease, I ought to have something to show if I'm teasing. But that's all I can say because of political issues."
The AE adds Yun and Yang from Street Fighter III as playable characters, as well as Evil Ryu and new character Oni (an even more evil Akuma) as secret bosses.
Gameplay balance changes are also implemented, some of which have sparked intense debate within the fighting game community.

Graf-chokolo announced on his blog that he was able to successfully install Gentoo Linux on the internal HDD of the PS3 Slim.
The famous hacker was able to make this business after increasing the size of the "VFlash" of the PS3 Slim (area of the hard disk for installing the firmware and thus not affected by formatting the hard drive) of 256 MW (at normal state) to 40 GO! The increase in this space then allowed him to install a Gentoo Linux distribution. He says that future users can exploit its format their HDD without losing Linux.
Next steps:
- Compile petitboot for the PS3.
- Install the petitboot VFlash.
- Create a CFW HV able to boot the OS or Petitboot Game. Petitboot can run Linux (or Other OS) from the HDD, VFlash, USB, CDROM or NFS (as all-makes the old firmware 3.15 or Graf-chokolo its PS3 3.41).
- Create a more easy (user friendly) to install Linux on the internal HDD.
Pending that, you can retrieve ps3stor-utils and Linux ps3stormgr device manager, allowing you to create or delete regions of storage on PS3 Linux. They were used to create the new region VFlash to accommodate Linux.
Here is an overview of Linux partitions on the new VFlash:

News from Coldbird:
As you guys have noticed, I’m currently working on the Online Mode Feature, which we intend to add with PRO-C while VF deals with PRO-B4 at the moment.
I’m wondering which approach to the online mode you guys would prefer, do you wish to have a centralized server shape, with one single server to hold all users, or a decentralized shape, where every community, lets say, a Monster Hunter Community, could host their own server?
What the up and downs are for each approach are quite clear… centralized has one big PSP online community, a lot of users in one spot, making matchmaking easier… but of course this requires more expensive servers and thus more donations to pay for them, while the decentralized approach splits the community into many subgroups, making matchmaking more difficult, but of course cheaper, as the server costs would get covered by each communities manager.
This blogpost will lock comments in 2 weeks from now, I will then evaluate your decissions in the comments.
Greetings, Coldbird.

Oh, woe is us. Or, to be more precise, woe is us if we wanted the Xperia Play on the UK's O2 network on the day of its release, April 1st. The British carrier has been candid in admitting it found software bugs on the Play and is holding back release of the gamer-friendly device until those have been ironed out. We appreciate its effort in "testing the phone non-stop for weeks" and its reluctance to grab a quick buck by releasing imperfectly baked goods, but a major question remains -- if this isn't an O2-specific software problem, and we've heard no peep of O2 customizing the Android 2.3 build on the Play, why are no other carriers signaling a similar delay? Vodafone is still aiming to deliver UK pre-orders by April 5th and there seems to be no indication of flawed software from others. Only thing we can think of, given that O2 has the white Xperia Play exclusive, is that the white phone curse has struck again.
[Thanks, Ed]
Update: Here's what Sony Ericsson has to say on the matter:
"Sony Ericsson Xperia™ PLAY will be launching on 1st April across all UK mobile operator partners except for O2, who have decided to prolong the testing period in order to ensure that the software meets the requirements of its procedures. Sony Ericsson will be workingwith O2 over the next couple of weeks to expedite the process and ensure that O2 customers can soon join consumers across the UK in being able to enjoy the world's first PlayStation certified smartphone." http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/25/x...-what-are-the/

US-based specialist retailer GameStop has said that Kinect continues to perform well, but demand for PlayStation Move has also seen the business struggle to keep the PS3 motion control peripheral in stock.
Speaking in an investor call yesterday, GameStop president Tony Bartel said that both motion controllers have been strong retail drivers for his business, reports Industry Gamers.
"So we have strong demand, good stock, and we continue to see strong sell of the unit," said Bartel of Kinect.
"Attach rate is where we anticipated it would be. We also just got back from a meeting with all the publishers... and most are developing games for the Kinect platform. We're happy to see that there's strong support for the Kinect platform.
"We have struggled to stay in stock on the Sony Move controllers; there's a tremendous amount of demand for that. Provided we can get more into stock, we should see some strong growth there as well."
Sony has not been forthcoming about precise sales of the product, though recently released figuresindicate that Xbox 360 consoles bundled with competing motion technology, Kinect, outsold Move by as much as five-to-one in the US over February.

March 25th, 2011, 23:19 Posted By: wraggster
UK network O2 has delayed its adoption of the new Sony Ericsson Xperia Play thanks to a number of software bugs discovered when testing the handset.
A post on O2's blog explained the situation, which will mean that the O2 edition of the phone won't launch alongside other networks on April 1.
"Sometimes we discover bugs and issues on a phone," said head of O2's testing team Stuart Hibberd. "This is perfectly normal - bugs can appear in every form of software. When we discover these issues we work with our phone manufacturer partners to fix them and make sure that O2 customers will have the best possible experience when they use their phone.
"This is what has happened with the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY. We've been testing the phone non-stop for weeks and have found some bugs in the software that, if they're not fixed, means customers won't have a great experience.
"We've been working with Sony Ericsson to get these bugs ironed out, but haven't been able to get them fixed in time for us to be able to launch the phone on April 1 as we originally planned."
Official details of the handset were unveiled at the Mobile World Conference in Barcelona in February. Twenty publishers and fifty games were confirmed for launch.
Update.
Sony Ericsson's PR agency has since issued a statement on the issue.
"Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY will be launching on April 1 across all UK mobile operator partners except for O2, who have decided to prolong the testing period in order to ensure that the software meets the requirements of its procedures.
"Sony Ericsson will be working with O2 over the next couple of weeks to expedite the process and ensure that O2 customers can soon join consumers across the UK in being able to enjoy the world's first PlayStation certified smartphone."

Even tho graf_chokolo is still getting taken by Sony for a ride thru the legal system he continues to stun the PS3 with his mad coding skills!
Now he has mentioned that he is working on a v3.55 CFW that will basically allow you to dual-boot a PS3 console of course his end-goal is to allow youu to boot either a gameOS and a form of Linux running on the slim PS3 console!
Quote:
I plan to implement dual boot feature in HV, just like i did on my PS3 3.41, and you can boot with it either gameos or linux or some other system like freebsd. You won’t need any bootos on gameos for that. I will also patch HV and enable more features! I will do it on PS3 slim, first i will resize HDD and add a partition for Linux there!

Some news from Coldbird:
Today marks a very special day for all of us, I and Azn, a close friend of mine, have tested out my internal PRO-C online code prototype in private and it was a (although slightly buggy) success!
- PDP Emulation now works properly and thus Adhoc Transmission over IP.
- Group Management works mostly, some slight bugs were revealed as we tested it.
- Trigger Schemata is now working! Finally no more polling! Network Speed / Latency Improvements!
Just a bit of tinkering here and there, and the first PDP based Adhoc Titles should be playable.
Before People start asking though… it will be quite some time before Killer Titles like Dissidia Duodecim and the likes will be supported, cause they make use of the full Adhoc Arsenal available, PDP, PTP, Matching, etc. however don’t worry, just because it will take longer to support those games doesn’t mean we aren’t working on it.
Now I can go to bed without worries for today, a nice feeling.
Good Night Readers, Greetings, Coldbird.
24. March: Issued some tests with friends of mine, ironed out group management problems and added user timeout values / keep alives to the server code, finally one can log out without the server crashing.
If no troublesome bugs pop up, we might be able to start a public test this weekend.

Yesterday, the ballad of hacker George "Geohot" Hotz and his ongoing legal struggle with Sony took a bizarre turn, when the latter claimed Hotz had hampered "jurisdictional discovery" by removing parts of his overturned hard drives, and is currently avoiding trial in South America. Recently, Hotz' legal counsel Stewart Kellar responded to these claims, explaining, "The notion that George has fled the country is absurd."
Kellar added, "George is in South America to see a friend, on a trip he planned before this lawsuit ever began." With regards to the claim that Hotz had sabotaged the hard drives he turned over to Sony, Kellar said Sony is "using intentionally ambiguous language" to turn public opinion against Hotz. "The 'components' SCEA is talking about are hard drives' controller cards," he said, claiming that they had been supplied to the prosecutor.
We've once again contacted Sony for a response (to this response), but given their policy for not commenting on legal issues, we won't bother crossing our fingers.

March 25th, 2011, 00:06 Posted By: wraggster
At CES 2010, Sony's Kaz Hirai -- potential successor to Sir Howard Stringer, if you're just joining us -- introduced "Sony Network Entertainment," a new corporate unit tasked with the expansion of the increasingly vital PlayStation Network architecture. At CES this year, Kaz said 2011 would find Sony "building upon the video, music, game and book offerings on our Qriocity and our PlayStation Network services to deliver a compelling, unique experience for Sony across a wide range of consumer electronic devices."
It looks like part of that plan is in progress now with the introduction of SNEA. Some of you may have received an "important message" from the "PlayStation Network team at Sony Computer Entertainment America" in your inbox today alerting you to a rather troubling change: SCEA is giving all of the money in your online wallet away ...
... to Sony Network Entertainment America! "The first time you sign in to your Sony Online Services account on or after April 1," the important message reads, "you will be asked to enter into a new Terms of Service and User Agreement with SNEA." You can take a peek at that new ToS located conveniently at qriocity.com. (Aside: Isn't it cute when Sony pretends that Qriocity is just as important as PlayStation Network?)
If your relationship with SNEA starts and stops at PlayStation Network, then nothing really changes for you; however, if you're all about Sony's networked services, having a unified wallet and identity will probably be a convenience. Until they tie your PSN tag to your musical tastes. "Hey xxXSmokezMadBluntz420Xxx, how's that new Bieber album?"

March 24th, 2011, 23:55 Posted By: wraggster
Today's most infamous hacker, PS3 jailbreaker George "Geohot" Hotz, has laughed in the face of allegations that he fled Sony's lawyers and ran away to South America.
"Apparently, I have fled the country. ROFL," wrote Hotz in a post titled "Fearmongering" on his Geohot Got Sued blog.
"Factually, it's true I'm in South America, on a vacation I've had planned and paid for since November. I mean, it is spring break; hacking isn't my life.
"Rest assured that not a dime of legal defence money would ever go toward something like this. And of course [Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton - Sony's choice of legal firm on this matter] loves the idea of painting me as an international fugitive.
"I have been in contact with my lawyers almost every day," Hotz added. "I would not let the case suffer.
"That said, I also won't let this ridiculous lawsuit run my life either. Then the fearmongerers win."
Hotz will return to North America because the Xperia Play, Sony's new PlayStation-themed phone, is "hard to come by" where he is. I think it's supposed to be a joke.
Yesterday, Sony's lawyers accused Hotz of refusing to comply with court orders. "Hotz's attempts to dodge this Court's authority raise very serious questions," the legal team declared.
Hotz faces an uphill battle against Sony in court. Judges have already ordered that Hotz turn over his computer for inspection. The authorities have also granted subpoenas spanning YouTube, Google, Twitter and Hotz's own website and PayPal account~. Why? To find out who else was involved with PS3 Jailbreak, and who downloaded the piracy-enabling hack.
The only question left to answer is who will play Hotz in Geohot: The Movie - Leonardo DiCaprio or Harrison Ford?

The Air Force's Research Lab in Rome, NY. has one of the cheapest supercomputers ever made, and best of all over 3,000 of your friends can playTekken on it. The computer is made from 1,716 PlayStation 3s linked together, and is used to process images from spy planes. From the article: "The Air Force calls the souped-up PlayStations the Condor Supercomputer and says it is among the 40 fastest computers in the world. The Condor went online late last year, and it will likely change the way the Air Force and the Air National Guard watch things on the ground." We covered this story back in December when the Condor first went online.

Youtube user and all-around cool guy shantzg001 was kind enough to answer some of my questions about his recent project that resulted in the unholy union of Kinect and a PS3 over a youtube message. Here’s what was said:
How important is this? Do you believe it will lead anywhere?
Are you still working on it or is it done as a proof of concept?
