Sony's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that feedback from third-party developers has been essential to the final design of its next handheld console, codenamed the NGP.
Speaking to the official PlayStation blog, Yoshida claimed the NGP has been in development for over three years before it was officially revealed earlier this year, with Sony taking a back to basics approach to development of the hardware.
"The NGP development team visited many developers and publishers globally with an early prototype of the hardware to get direct feedback," he said.
"I also personally joined some of the meetings to discuss various aspects of NGP and the options we were looking at. The input of other developers outside of Worldwide Studios has been essential for us to make final decisions on NGP.
"As a result of this, we went through many iterations of NGP. It reminded me of the early days of the original PlayStation, when we visited many developers and publishers to get feedback during the development of that product. It's almost as if SCE has gone back to basics, which should be a good thing," he added.
Last week Sony revealed that retail Gamecards for the NGP will come in 2GB and 4GB sizes. Yoshida said he expects a wide variety of games for the system, from traditional console games to augmented reality, touch-only titles and network-enabled games.

Sony wants to make the sale of PlayStation Network games in UK shops a reality.
Specialist shop GAME already sells Xbox Live Arcade games in stores – a scheme it launched just two weeks ago.
Now Sony wants in on the action.
"We actually already have the same programme in place with GameStop in the US," SCEE President Andrew House told MCV.
"We would like to work with the right retail partners in Europe under the right model, to undertake the same sort of activity."
If Sony does convince shops to sell PSN games, the likes of Flower and Pixeljunk Shooter 2 could sit alongside Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 on store shelves.

Brutal fighting game Mortal Kombat is playable in 2D and stereoscopic 3D - at the same time.
The on-screen fighters are rendered in 2D for the game's PlayStation 3 exclusive 3D mode, which means the action remains visible even when you're not wearing 3D glasses. If you're not wearing 3D glasses, the 3D backgrounds look a bit blurry but the characters appear "crisp and clean", according to Sony reports.
So, if you've got only one pair of those expenses 3D shutter glasses but a few mates around for a session, everyone's happy.
"We didn't want 3D to change the basic mechanics or complicate things needlessly", Mortal Kombat creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon told the EU PlayStation Blog.
"Our 3D implementation makes the characters pop from the background a little more, helps you focus on them."
A PlayStation Network demo of Boon's gory brawler is due out on Wednesday – for PlayStation Plus subscribers.
It comes with four playable fighters: Johnny Cage, Mileena, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, and two environments: The Living Forest and The Pit, complete with its gruesome stage fatality.

The opportunity to sign amateur products in order to run smoothly on official firmware, has revolutionized the PSP hack that time had slowed its speed. However, there are limitations in the signature of homebrew, then become necessary as the Homebrew Enabled creations, such HEN, whose main function is to be able to run unsigned software.
HEN exploit the bug of FW for which they designed, and are always stored in memory, then re dovendoli whenever the console was switched off. With HEN signed, this practice is now much faster, but who knows what and how many saints have been repeatedly called into question during attempts to initiate the known ChickHEN to 5.03.
The coder kgsws has always been very active in the PSP scene, has finally found a way to remedy the volatility of HEN. Indeed, he has managed to "install" on the flash0 dell'HEN loader, so it starts at every boot of the PSP. It was simply a "sign" the loader (making some changes to the code) and replace the vshmain.prx present in the original flash0.
The proceeding was that he only tested on PSP 1000 (FAT), but according to what he says, should be feasible even on later models of PSP.

News via http://ps3.gx-mod.com/modules/news/a...p?storyid=2655
Squarepusher proposes a new version of FBANext, after FB Alpha (Final Burn Alpha). As a reminder, this is a multi arcade emulator based on the source code for Final Burn.
Changelog focusing on changes for developers, we provide it untranslated. The amendments mainly improve the overall operating speed.
- (PS3) Added waterpaint-normalcontrast.cg, waterpaint-normalcontrast-scanline.cg, waterpaint-highcontrast.cg,
waterpaint-highcontrast-scanline.cg shaders
- (PS3) Optimized crt.cg shader - now runs at 60fps (fullspeed) at 1080p (1920x1080). Also added crt-highgamma.cg.
- (PS3) Texture references used - far faster graphics code as a result. Also adapted refreshwithalpha so that it
looks the same as it did before without texture references.
- (PS3) Added all the shaders added inbetween r423 and the custom versions
- (PS3) Replaced inlineASM in burnint.h with intrinsic so that it can be compiled with SNC. Also commented out
little endian functions in blargg_endian.h to get SNC to work
- (PS3) Commented out all exceptions and try - catch blocks in files such as ticpp.cpp and others - SNC by default
works with exception support disabled - also exceptions have performance overhead - commenting out the exceptions
and the try-catch blocks for both GCC and SNC increased performance.
- (PS3) Got rid of virtual function call overhead in classes that inherited from a base class with virtual function
definitions - such as the Cellframework Audio driver, and FBA's aud_audio.h itself. Led to measurable performance
increases and lag reduction.
- (PS3) Better button responsiveness - in PS3/run.cpp, for some reason button input was only being registered one
out of every three frames - commented that out. There were tons of other branches in the interface code that are
unnecessary - checking for bDrivOkay for instance in video_interface and vid_psgl - that were commented out for
PS3. This could similary be applied to FBA 360 for some performance gains - same with the elimination of virtual
function call overhead.
- (PS3) Menu scrolling with the D-pad/analog stick in the ROM browser/settings menu/ingame menu by pressing and
holding directional keys.
- (PS3) Shaders now receive three additional input params for the main vertex program (main_vertex). This
allows us to offload some more calculations from the fragment shader which leads to increased performance.
- (PS3) Added back ability to go to Service menu by pressing R3 button.
- (Core) - Rygar driver colors are restored again to normal colors - during the update to FBA beta, a swapword
statement was left out.
- (PS3) Makefile works now for either SNC or GCC. Change CELL_BUILD_TOOLS to set either of the two. The best
speed I currently get with GCC for some odd reason.
- (PS3) Makefile and preprocessor statements in the code now let you compile the source and have it detect
your SDK version automatically.
- (PS3) There is a special debug mode you can activate (CELL_DEBUG_CONSOLE = 1) where a Telnet server will
be running in the background which you can telnet into - in this mode, you can track variables and/or dump
screenshots on the HDD.
- (PS3) Better speed, far less lag as a result of all of the above.
PS. Every change above only affects the PS3 version.

Well-known hacker Mathieu Hervais has reportedly found a bug that allows exploiting metldr, the bootloader and firmware version 3.56. Unfortunately, he refuses to release it.
Interestingly, it was recently rumored that Sony was soon going to be releasing new "unhackable" PS3 models to the market.

The news got a bit overshadowed by some augmented reality demos and a little game called Uncharted, but Sony also talked a bit about the NGP's location-aware capabilities at GDC this past week, which we now know will rely on Skyhook's Core Engine system. What's more, that functionality will apparently be included on WiFi-only models in addition to those with 3G, which means that all NGP users will be able to play location-aware games and take advantage of other various social applications. As explained by Sony at GDC, that could include things like the ability to find nearby NGP users and see what they're playing, and even more elaborate things like real-life treasure hunts -- all of which can presumably be switched off if you prefer to keep your mobile gaming habits to yourself.
