You can now make a donation to the tsunami relief effort in Japan direct from your PlayStation Network account, Sony has announced.
According to the PlayStation Blog, next time you boot up your PlayStation 3 you should see a 'Japan Tsunami Appeal' banner on the homepage of the PlayStation Store.
Click on that and you'll be able to make a donation from your PlayStation Store wallet in €2, €5, €10 or €20 chunks. Not only will you be helping out with a very worthy cause, but you'll also net yourself a free Sunrise Blossom Theme.
"Every penny and cent" of your donation will go straight to the British Red Cross, promised Sony Europe president Andrew House, aiding "emergency relief and recovery efforts, including deploying personnel, sending relief supplies and providing financial resources."
"Many gamers in particular feel a special bond with Japan," continued his post, "even if they've never traveled there personally. Its ingenuity and innovation have shaped our industry, and its culture and style have spread to communities across the world.
"Please join us now in helping the Japanese people during this great time of need. Together we can have a significant impact on the relief process."

March 20th, 2011, 02:11 Posted By: wraggster
Digital versions of NGP games will launch on the same date as boxed retail copies, Sony has promised.
Sony Europe boss Andrew House told MCV that the strategy was a reaction to mistakes made during the PSP era.
"One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP. Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally," he pledged.
The PSP was widely criticised for inconsistencies between digital and retail releases. A digital launch would often follow many weeks after boxed copies had hit shelves, or sometimes not at all.
House then went on to explain that while a developer will have to make a digital version of their game available, they will not be forced to release a boxed copy.
"Not necessarily all games have to be made available physically. And having the option of a digital-only method affords more creative risk-taking, and that's because you don't-have that in-built risk of physical inventory.
"What I'd like to see is a hierarchy of different games of different sizes. So at the high-end you've got these big, premium games, which by and large will be available physically because that is the most convenient way to access them. And then there's an opportunity for digital-only, where we might see more experimentation."
Still no word on exactly when we'll see the NGP in shops, though a late 2011 launch was originally mooted by Sony. An Ubisoft survey published earlier this week hinted that their will be two versions of the hardware available, with a basic model reportedly priced at $250 and a 3G-enabled version going for $350.

March 18th, 2011, 23:09 Posted By: wraggster
The chances that the PlayStation 4 will ship with a Move-like motion controller instead of traditional gamepad got a little slimmer, thanks to an interview with Sony R&D wizard Dr. Richard Marks. "I said that pretty much from the beginning that we're not trying to get rid of the gamepad," he told Gamasutra, saying of the idea that Sony might go motion-only for PS4: "I don't think that makes sense."
"The gamepad is a really good abstract device," Marks explained. "It can map to so many different things. It doesn't map one-to-one to those things, but it doesn't need to for a lot of game experiences."
Of course, Marks is no doubt tinkering on some future iteration of the Move technology, but there's one gameplay interface he apparently has no interest in exploring: brain waves. "I think the brain interface thing is too far," he admitted when the topic was broached. "When you play some of the experiences like Rock Band where you break into a sweat playing the drums, those things are good. I like those things. I don't want to remove all of that."

SCEA hasn't managed to deliver all PSP UMD releases digitally -- let alone simultaneously with retail -- and even said the likelihood of making such parity would be several years off. That doesn't appear to be the case with PSP's sucessor, the NGP, based on comments made by SCEE president Andrew House.
"One thing we learnt from PSP, is that we want to have simultaneous delivery in digital and physical for NGP," House told MCV. "Just to clarify that, all games that appear physically will be made available digitally."
While that's certainly positive news, we're still waiting on word about Sony filling in the gaps on downloadable PSP back-catalog games -- which will run on the NGP, some with patched-in support for the handheld's second analog stick. Then there's the matter of the system'sproprietary flash storage media, needed to store downloaded games, being a bit fuzzy. In short: Sony still has a lot to explain about its powerful new portable.

PS3 is leading Xbox 360 in terms of hardware and software sales in France, according to a new Sony announcement based on data from GfK.
According to a Google translation of a Gamekyo article, PS3 has surpassed three million sales in the country, versus Xbox 360's 2.3 million.
On the software front, PS3 games have generated €418 million (equivalent to eight million units sold), versus €337 million for Wii games and €239 million for Xbox 360 titles.
CVG readers often ask for European sales data when we post the monthly NPD numbers from the US, so here you are. Unfortunately, we don't have access to wider European sales figures that we're allowed to publish on a regular basis, otherwise we would.

Sony has been given permission to subpoena the PayPal account of hacker George 'GeoHot' Hotz, following his public release of jailbreak software for the PlayStation 3.
Magistrates have already given Sony the go ahead to acquire the internet IP addresses of visitors to Hotz's website, as well as data from YouTube, Twitter, and Google.
Hotz is primarily accused of breaking the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, after he released software and information allowing other users to hack the PlayStation 3 and allow it to run unauthorised software (a process known as jailbreaking).
According to Wired, Sony is able to seize any documents "sufficient to identify the source of funds" that were sent to Hotz's PayPal account. The funds must pertain specifically to California though, if Sony is to continue to fight its lawsuit in San Francisco rather than Hotz's home state of New Jersey.
By law Sony does not need to prove that Hotz received any payments for his jailbreak software, although Hotz has denied he received donations.

The basic Next Generation Portable model will cost $250 and the 3G model $350, a Ubisoft survey suggests.
Research firm Toluna conducted a survey asking consumers if they'd be happy to pay the asking price for Sony's PlayStation Portable successor this week on behalf of Assassin's Creed publisher Ubisoft.
Kotaku reported the survey gauged purchase intent based on the expected price of the different NGP models.
"The retail price of the Sony NGP is expected to be around $350," says the survey in reference to the premium model. It asks: "How likely would you be to purchase the Sony NGP now that you know this retail price?"
Sony is yet to put an official price stamp on the powerful handheld, but told Eurogamer it will be "affordable". "I can't put a ballpark on it in terms of figures, but what I would say is that we will shoot for an affordable price that's appropriate for the handheld gaming space," Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Andrew House told Eurogamer January. All NGP devices will have wi-fi capability; a separate SKU will have 3G.
"So the user gets a choice," House explained. "Wi-fi is available wherever, which clearly is the most important aspect of connectivity and that connected experience; 3G will be a subset of that."

News via http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/sony-...sidents-83406/
The latest court documents obtained by PSX-SCENE reveal that the subpoena for information on Geohot's PayPal account may be limited only to parties who sent money and reside in California and only funds that were sent prior to the legal fund donations.
Quote:
THE COURT: Okay. All right. Well, then, I'll limit it, as requested. I will limit it to documents sufficient to identify any source of funds in California that went into that PayPal account -- any PayPal account associated with
geohot at gmail dor com for the period January 1, '09, to February 1, '11. And ask the plaintiff to redraft their subpoena accordingly.
There is also some clarification in the court transcript as to what Sony will be looking for on Hotz' personal computer.
Quote:
That's right. We're just trying to establish that that computer somehow hooked up to the PSN; the PlayStation Network. Additionally, we're looking for information, such as any of the Sony Developer Kit tools that might be contained on that computer. That information would only be distributed by Sony Computer Entertainment America, and would establish contacts between SCEA and Mr. Hotz.
...at the end of the day, he would have something belonging to SCEA that he should have licensed.
And one of his contentions is that he's not aware of Sony Computer Entertainment America being in California. And we believe that the SDK -- the developer's kit -- would contain information showing him that SCEA is in California.

Sony has postponed the UK launch of MotorStorm: Apocalypse following last week's devastating earthquake.
The game was due out this Friday.
In a statement issued this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe noted the unfortunate similarities between Apocalypse's fictional setting and the tragic events of last Friday.
"We are shocked and saddened to see the impact of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan and our thoughts are with all those affected, including our colleagues within the Sony family, living and working throughout Japan," Sony said.
"We are very conscious of the parallels between these events and the underlying theme in MotorStorm and are doing everything we can to be as sensitive as possible to the situation.
"Although the game itself is already in distribution, we are ceasing any further shipments and removing as much of the marketing materials as possible."
Apocalypse, by UK studio Evolution, sees players drive around a San Francisco-inspired fictional US city as it is ravaged by an earthquake.
A statement from Sony Computer Entertainment UK added: "Ahough we have shipped the game into the channel last week, given that we are able to do so, we have chosen to postpone the launch in the UK. In the meantime we will continue to monitor the situation very closely."
Sony will donate 300 million Japanese yen to help relief and recovery efforts in communities affected by the disaster.
A disaster relief fund will collect donations across the Sony Group from employees worldwide, and their contributions will be matched by the company through a matching gifts program.
Sony will also donate 30,000 radios to assist the relief of earthquake victims, while the Sony Group will prepare further product donations going forward, taking into account local needs.
Sony has been hit hard by the earthquake. The Tohoku region is historically important for Sony, with a high concentration of manufacturing sites, and many employees and their families have also been affected.
The earthquake has caused difficulty in connecting to the PlayStation Network in Japan. Sony has urged players back up their data. Its PlayStation information call centre and repair centre were both suspended by the earthquake.

March 16th, 2011, 00:36 Posted By: wraggster
With a retractable gamepad and PlayStation games, the Xperia Play is the closest we’ve come to a mobile for gamers.
But can the Xperia Play appeal to those who are just looking to play the next Angry Birds?
A joint collaboration between Sony Ericsson and Sony Computer Entertainment, the mobile features a range of content which they believe will give it the versatility to appeal beyond traditional gamers.
“We believe the Xperia Play will have widespread appeal to a number of consumer audiences including casual and enthusiastic gamers,” says Matt Beavis, head of PR and sponsorship at Sony Ericsson.
“Through the PlayStation Suite initiative, Sony Computer Entertainment will bring PlayStation content to the Android platform. This will of course benefit Xperia Play and mean we will have quality PlayStation content on the device.”
And, in the long-term, this development platform may help Sony regain a hold on the mobile gaming market, as it is being rolled out across a range of PlayStation Certified devices, including the rumoured PlayStation tablet.
GAMES FOR ALL
Along with access to the Android Marketplace and its library of games, there will be over 50 titles available at launch, from publishers EA, Glu Mobile and Gameloft.
Speaking to publishers, making use of the Play’s gamepad is allowing them to deliver a broader range of genres with a higher level of control than touchscreens.
Several popular franchises are being optimised for the device, including FIFA, The Sims 3, Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell and Guitar Hero.
An EA spokesperson says: “The device recognises what EA has believed for some time - that games are one of the key elements that smartphone users are seeking.
“We don’t really see any limitations to who might enjoy playing games on the Xperia Play, so the titles we’ll make available for it will range from those that will attract a more hardcore audience, but also those that will be of interest to casual gamers.”
Gameloft UK’s digital marketing and community manager, Callum Rowley, says: “Gameloft’s philosophy has always been to create the highest quality games on the device the consumer wants to own. The Xperia Play offers an alternative, yet still accessible, avenue to the smartphone market, and with its emphasis on games it will bring new people into gaming. This can only be a good thing in our view.”
Yet the question is will consumers opt for these PlayStation-specific downloadable versions or the cheaper, and ever comparable, Android apps?
The consensus at present appears to be wait and see what the market responds to.
The recent reveal that PlayStation Network content must be re-purchased on the Xperia Play is also raising questions that we may have another PSP Go situation here.
HANDHELD HYBRID
Chris James, managing director of Steel Media, which owns handheld gaming site Pocket Gamer, sees it as “a brilliant addition to the smartphone world.” He is more optimistic about the device’s potential for reaching dedicated gamers as well as casual audiences.
“It’s a touch-screen device like pretty much every other smartphone hitting the market right now so you can play the latest Android casual games in precisely the same way you could on any other Android device.
“In addition, it’s quite likely that some casual gamers will prefer using the control pad to the touchscreen in the first place. It frees up the screen and makes the experience better and arguably easier to control in some cases,” he says.
Where Xperia Play will fit into the current mobile market is still up for debate.
We’ll soon find out whether it is a gaming phone or a phone for all.
James says: “It’s establishing a new niche as a ‘gaming phone’, which considering the incredible similarities between most modern smartphones is an understandable and quite likely direction for manufacturers to follow as they seek to differentiate their products.
“I certainly wouldn’t be surprised to see further iterations in the same line from Sony and potentially a response from other manufacturers.
“The other viewpoint is that this is a belated and gimmicky attempt to cross-pollinate the smartphone and the handheld console, and apply the ‘PlayStation’ brand to the mobile space.
“The prevailing view is likely to be down to how successful the device is at retail, and that in turn will be affected by the manner in which both SCE and Sony Ericsson get behind the handset and the content available for it.”

exciting new release for the PSP Genesis Competition. The French developer USpeed created a plugin that allows you to manage multiple profiles in the same lifeboat PSP. Thank USpeed Profile Manager you can, among other things, circumventing the restriction of some games that bind to a single savegame saving automatic. We can then create different game profiles (up to 20 for the moment) including switches. For each profile is associated with a folder SAVEDATA that can do this at our discretion, which will contain all the saves made with that particular profile.
