For the first few days, things were a bit too quiet on PlayStation 4. It’s only since the EU servers were switched on late last week that the front end of Sony’s system has come to life for us – and what we’ve seen since has been mixed. There’s an awful lot to like about PS4′s OS and interface, but much that needs fixing, too.Take the Share feature. As promised, a tap of what we used to call Select takes a screenshot and saves the past 15 minutes of gameplay; by default it brings up a menu that asks you whether you want to upload a video or a screengrab, but it can be configured so that a tap takes a screenshot and a long press brings up the menu. In reviewing PS4′s launch lineup this has felt like a revelation, a true next-gen feature after years of running consoles through screen-capture software. That feeling rather fades when you realise you can no longer copy your media to a USB drive. Screenshots can only be uploaded to either Twitter or Facebook, the former compressing our 1920×1080 screens to 1024×576, the latter to 960×540 – four pixels short of PS Vita’s native resolution. Worse, there appears to be a limit on how much you can share at once, with our attempts to share a batch of Killzone: Shadow Fall screens met with an error code after just four uploads. This is a reviewer’s problem, admittedly – Sony clearly wants you to share shots as you take them – but it’s an arbitrary limit that’s hard to understand. The Share button isn’t what it could be – there are some strange restrictions on what you can do with your captures.
The What’s New tile that’s positioned front and centre whenever you turn on the machine, however, is a delight. At a glance you can see what friends – now referred to by their real names, providing you’ve exchanged Name Requests – have been up to. I’m a button press away from seeing the Olivier Giroud goal that Access TV’s Nathan Ditum has proudly uploaded (oddly, he’s a Spurs fan). I can see the triple kill that Umbra Software’s Thomas Puha shared from Call Of Duty: Ghosts, and the Need For Speed Rivals Trophies that The Guardian’s Keith Stuart unlocked during his most recent session. If they’re still online, I’m a button press away from joining them; if they’re not, the same button will load up the game. And if I don’t own it, a button press will take me straight to the PlayStation Store. It’s a smart, snappy system that on several occasions has prompted a change of heart and made me load up a different game to the one I was planning on playing. It’s made joining a game so easy, in fact, that it’s a little easier to forgive the bizarre absence of notifications when friends come online – something Microsoft has also, for some reason, discarded in the generational transition. Perhaps PS4′s increased friends list limit, up from 100 to 2,000, is behind the change, but it’s an odd retrograde step for a console designed with social interaction at its core.PS4′s front end is certainly more intuitive to navigate than PS3′s XMB, and the console’s multitasking is a breath of fresh air coming after seven years of having to quit a game to make even the most minor of settings changes. Tap the PS button in the centre of the controller and you can change screen resolution, audio setup, network settings and even which user is logged in before another tap of PS puts you right back into the game. And while switching to another game will close down the one that’s running, loading an app merely suspends it: you can watch something on Netflix then switch back to the game to pick up exactly where you left off.Yet while splitting the UI into two rows – one for games and media, the other for everything else – looks clean at first, things change as you amass a bigger library of games. What’s New will always occupy the leftmost slot, with whichever disc is in the tray right next to it. From there, games, plus icons for the Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services and a TV & Video tile, are presented in order of most recently played, and there’s no way of sorting them alphabetically. As we scroll to the right at speed trying to remember whether we most recently played Resogun before Knack or after Killzone, the console struggles to load in thumbnails in time; when we reach the end of the list and flick all the way back to the left, we find the artwork for the games at the start of the list is loading in again. There are only 18 icons on that list at the moment, and it’s only going to get bigger. That a console with 8GB of memory can’t cache a handful of thumbnails is puzzling, if not worrying.

Sony's European arm will be giving away ten free PlayStation Mobile games over the course of five weeks.
As confirmed on the PlayStation Blog, the company will be making two PlayStation Mobile games available for free each week, then replacing them with another two games every Wednesday.
The first two games, which are available to download now, are Passing Time and Rymdkapsel.
According to Sony: "Passing Time is an all-new touch-controlled football game from the developer behind Frobisher Says! for PS Vita, and the upcoming Hohokum on PS4.
"Pass the ball and burn the opposition with a blistering fireball, prove your slow motion skills by mastering the rock ball and show off your one touch finesse with the explosive bomb ball.
"Rymdkapsel is a relaxing, meditative strategy game set in the depths of space. It builds upon the legacy of Martins earlier games by requiring minimal user input, while needing highly strategic thinking to progress.
"You're tasked with building the best possible space station by commanding your minions to collect and utilise the different resources at your disposal."
The games can be downloaded for free on Vita or any PlayStation certified phone or tablet. Check this list to see if your phone is PlayStation certified.
The launch schedule for free games is as follows:
Passing Time and Rymdkapsel - Nov 27 to Dec 3

Game 5 and Game 6 - Dec 11 to Dec 18

PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara has suggested that thePS4 lifecycle might be shorter than that of the PS3 in certain markets.
Sony's next-gen console launches in Europe at midnight tonight, seven years after PS3 debuted in Japan and the US and more than six and half years after it arrived on these shores.
On the eve of the launch, Sony Computer Entertainment UK boss Gara told TechRadar: "I think there's reason to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK.
"It's probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit.

Sony's North American arm has announced the latest batch of games set to be offered free to PS Plus members.
December's PS Plus additions are Borderlands 2 and Grid 2 on PS3, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed and Urban Trial Freestyle on Vita.
The games will be added to the Instant Game Collection throughout December, Sony said.
The company is also offering 40 per cent off the regular price of a PS Plus subscription tomorrow. On Black Friday only, a one year PS Plus membership will cost $29.99.
Sony used this month's PS4 launch to make a number of significant changes to PS Plus. For a start, PS4 owners are required to subscribe in order to play online multiplayer, which isn't the case on PS3 or Vita.
The thinking behind the decision to charge customers for online multiplayer on PS4 was explained to us by Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida in June.

November 28th, 2013, 23:31 Posted By: wraggster
The UK arm of PlayStation believes that pent-up demand for the PS4, coupled with a healthy launch day allocation, gives the new console a real chance to break Britain's all-time sales record.
Currently the fastest selling console in the UK is Sony's PSP, which was sold to 185,000 consumers after just four days on the market. But, hours ahead of Sony's midnight PS4 launch event in Covent Garden, the corporation's UK managing director Fergal Gara said the PS4 could hit new heights.
Gara (left) attended the London PS Vita launch event in 2011 and is making final preparations for the PS4 release party in Covent Garden"Like North America, the UK is a huge priority for us because it sits at the front-end of appetite for new technology," Gara told CVG.
"With PS4, stock allocation in the UK is very healthy indeed and we go into this ready and willing and break our own previous launch record."
Microsoft may have already usurped the PSP's record, however. The software giant launched its Xbox One console on Friday and, within 48 hours, had already amassed 150,000 unit sales across the UK.
It is unclear if the company has enough remaining supply to outpace the PSP record. Nintendo's Wii U, meanwhile, sold 40,000 units in 48 hours.
"WE CAN'T WIND BACK THE CLOCK WITH PS3, BUT WE ARE HIGHLY AMBITIOUS WITH PS4" Sony sold around ten million PS2s in the UK, yet lost its grip on the market with the release of the PS3, which has so far sold more than five million units in total. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is far ahead, with total UK sales of more than 8.4 million.
Gara insisted that "beating the competition is not the most important thing here", but says Sony believes it can close the gap.
"There is definitely an ambition to reduce that gap, but first and foremost the ambition is to be the gamers' choice, and I think one leads to the other. I think we're doing a great job for the gamer, the market share will follow," he explained.
Sony UK has taken over London's famous OXO tower as part of the PS4 launch campaign"The PS3 is now in the twilight of its years, so we're not saying we'll fix the PS3's [market share gap] and we can't wind back the clock, but we are highly ambitious for PS4, and the early demand is superb. We are going to come out of the blocks very strong.
"So we will certainly compete better this time, we've certainly got a better shout with a really great machine at such a great price. We've entered the cycle on time at the target price, with a great feel-good factor among gamers. The support we've had from the community has been humbling."
He added: "Satisfying the gamer is the most important thing, satisfying our shareholders is maybe the second. But if we're doing both of those things it is likely we'll be the lead console."
Elsewhere in his interview with CVG, Gara suggested PS4 could win over casual gamers' hearts, and dismissed industry suggestions that the whole market has declined in the wake of the smartphone games revolution and Nintendo's slump in hardware sales.
"If you compare the core gamer market in the UK to the generation before, there was about ten million PS2s and two million consoles from Nintendo and Microsoft in the UK, so the current generation has expanded from that.
"Of course, within the last generation the PS2 had a good chunk of the casual market with games like Buzz and SingStar, and in this last cycle it was the Wii that grabbed that casual market. So if you combine the Wii and the core consoles, the installed base is about 20 million, which obviously represents huge growth over the previous generation.
"TIME WILL TELL WHICH COMPANY WILL HAVE THE IDEA THAT DRAWS IN THE MASS MARKET AGAIN" "So what is the potential for the market this generation? I would say the core market will remain robust, and time will tell which company will have the idea that draws in the mass market again and excites them the way we have seen in the past. Credit to Nintendo, they did a superb job in the last generation, I think the challenge is for PlayStation to pick up that market.
"We are absolutely focused on the core gamer. Everything in the machine, and the painful and expensive decisions we took to assemble it, has been built for the core gamer. But with a relatively assessable price point on day one, there's no reason not to say you can't pull in the casual gamer earlier in the cycle than usual."

Xbox One and Xbox 360 timed-exclusive Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is already being readied for a release on PlayStation 4, a fresh ratings board listing has revealed. The Korean Game Rating Board made mention of a PS4 edition alongside Garden Warfare's previously-announced versions for Microsoft platforms, Gematsu spotted. It's also listed on the Brazil Ratings Board (thanks, Lifelower).Garden Warfare is set to arrive for Xbox 360 and Xbox One on 20th February. A PC version has also been announced, but not dated. The game was always classed as a "timed-exclusive", although the listings suggest a PS4 version will release sooner rather than later.Xbox One will get an exclusive Boss Mode, however, which uses Kinect and SmartGlass functionality to let you control either Crazy Dave or the evil Doctor Zomboss - as voiced by Russell Brand.

Not pre-ordered a PlayStation 4 and still want one at midnight? 150 Tesco Extra stores will stock Sony's next-gen console across the UK tonight.
You can use Tesco's handy PS4 midnight launch store checker to find your nearest branches which will stock the console. No pre-order is necessary, which means that you might want to get there in good time - you probably won't be the only one.The retailer is going head-to-head with Asda, which will also sell the PlayStation 4 from tonight in 155 of its stores (although not all are open at midnight). We listed all the relevant Asda branchesearlier this week. Be aware that consoles will be sold on a first come, first served basis and be limited to one per customer.Best of luck!

Sony has confirmed PlayStation 4 and Vita bundles, to go on sale at select shops from this evening for a little under £500.Sony UK has worked with retailers to encourage what it calls a "soft bundle" that includes both consoles. Some shops won't be able to offer the deal because of PS4 stock availability, but the expectation is most will from tonight alongside the launch of the PS4 in Europe."We're working with our retail partners to put across that proposition as well as we can," Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer."It'll come to market in a few different shapes and guises. You may walk in and get a great deal on 'buy a Vita when bought with' type deal. So if you buy a PS4 you can get a Vita for X. And others will say, well here's the Ultimate Bundle and you get all those bits in it."But as a base price point, in other words for the two consoles, we expect the gamer to be able to pick that up for under £500. It's not a hard bundle pack at this point in time. It's us working with the retailer to effectively deliver a soft bundle."Gara said the PS4, which goes for £349 on its own, and the Vita, which you can pick up for around £150 depending on the model type, will be bundled together for a little under £500 - so we're looking at a saving of around £10.Since the announcement of the PS4 earlier this year, Sony has been keen to push its connectivity with the Vita handheld. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature in this regard is Remote Play, which uses Gaikai streaming technology to allow you to play PS4 games on a Vita.It was this feature, Gara said, that helped convince PlayStation to bundle the two together this Christmas."Our stimulus to do that is mainly the fact that once we got our hands on Remote Play we thought, wow, it really is real and good, and that deserves a shout," he said. "And of course it's a PlayStation point of difference."We think, for four hundred and something pounds you're getting two consoles, if you get PlayStation Plus with that then you've got an Instant Game Collection for both. So now they're both great companion devices and they're standalone devices. Why wouldn't we underline that and highlight that point of difference? We really believe in it."As for availability, the PS4 and Vita bundles will start to show up from tonight. "It's starting to happen now," Gara said this morning."If you look at offers at retail from launch - and others may introduce it slightly later - but over the coming weeks. It has to be a little bit determined by stock and the allocations and the pre-orders. If a retailer has all of their stock up to a certain date pre-ordered, they can't offer this right away. They have to come into some free stock. So, slightly staggered timing. But the offers to buy a Vita when you buy a PS4 will be live as of tonight."Gara added that while shops will get creative with their offers, Sony's expectation is you won't have to pay more than £499 for the two consoles."Retailers will package things around it or add certain things in. But as a base price we think that's quite compelling."

Sony hopes to lower the PlayStation 4 failure rate further for the console's UK launch.PS4 launched two weeks ago in North America, and soon after reports came in of a "blinking blue light" issue that rendered the console unusable.Sony said the number of PS4 units "dead on arrival" was one per cent the one million consoles that were sold within 24 hours of the North American launch. That amounted to around 10,000 units. Now, two weeks later, and with the European launch upon us, Sony UK reckons it's been able to use the extra time to its advantage - and is aiming to get that failure rate down to as close to zero per cent as possible."I don't expect any major issues," Sony UK boss Fergal Gara told Eurogamer ahead of tonight's midnight launch."But obviously any game who's disappointed is a problem we take seriously. We are looking into causes of those low level problems - and there are certain learnings that have already been taken which means we can potentially further reduce that low level down to as close to zero as we can possibly get it."But let's be clear: the failure rate on PS4 is well within the region we see on PS3, which is considered a pretty bullet-proof machine. There is no evidence there to cause panic either for us or for gamers having any lack of confidence in picking up a PS4."Despite his confidence, Gara said Sony had reserved some PS4 stock to make sure those who do have faulty consoles will see them replaced promptly."One thing we've done within our stock allocation is make sure we've got a pool of stock to deal with any 'dead on arrival' issues," he said."It's not a vast volume, because there's no evidence to suggest we need a vast volume to deal with that. But our consumer services helpline is there to support gamers and solve any problems that do emerge."Gara said the advantage of launching two weeks after North America extended beyond the PS4 hardware, indicating games have benefited from "lots of fine tuning"."[There has been] no major panic or changes required, but little bits of fine-tuning, not just on our side but also on the publishers' side," he said."So, some small little glitches on some games that can be ironed out, patched and tweaked before it comes into Europe."It's a privilege to go first, but there's actually quite a few advantages of going second. With the two week window, had there been anything serious, I'm not sure we would have fixed all of it in two weeks anyway. So the great news is there isn't anything serious."Sony has already published troubleshooting advice for the blinking blue light PS4 issue.

Sony's switching off a couple of PlayStation Network features to ensure smooth and stable performance in Europe where the PlayStation 4 launches ... tomorrow! All set.
"Following the successful launch of PS4 in North America on the 15th November, we have seen an unprecedented influx of players onto PSN. When we launch in Europe on Friday, once again, we are expecting record sales and record numbers of people logging onto PSN at similar times, alongside the North American players already on PSN," wrote Euroblog manager Fred Dutton, whose name should sound familiar."We want to make sure that your online experience is positive. To help ensure that this happens, we have made the decision to switch off a couple of features for European customers on day one. These features will then be switched back on a few days later, once the intensity of launch day calms down."The features being switched off are What's New (I don't know, it's switched off) and the Content Information Screen. What's New introduces you to new things of note as well as what your friends are doing, whereas the Content Information Screen shows friends' activity related to a specific game.Everything else - multiplayer, trophy hoarding, etc - will work as normal.

UPDATE: The 28 levels missing from Rayman Legends' Vita version are now available as a free download, Ubisoft has confirmed. The Invasion maps rejig the layout and enemies in the game's existing areas and offer a significantly harder challenge than the regular game. We still don't know why the Vita version originally shipped without them included, but all users should be able to nab them now.ORIGINAL STORY: Rayman Legends launched in September to rave reviews, but Vita players were frustrated to find out that the portable version of the game omitted the title's 28 "Invasion Mode" stages that remixed previous levels into a more challenging form. Ubisoft previously said the missing content would be added as a free update and now we know when: 26th November. Mark it.The announcement came through the official Rayman Twitter account where it noted that leaderboards will be added too, meaning the Vita version will finally contain all the same content as its console brethren. This update follows the news that Rayman Legends is coming to PS4 and Xbox One in February.

Yesterday Sony finalised its PS4 launch lineup of games and their prices from the new PS4 Store - raising eyebrows in the process.A number of prospective PS4 owners were disappointed to see exclusives Killzone Shadow Fall and Knack for sale at £52.99 - a price higher than the disc versions from the high street and online shops. On Amazon, for example, Killzone is £48.Given how hard both Sony and Microsoft are pushing the digital future of console gaming, and how cheap some games are on PC digital stores such as Steam, many had hoped for at least parity with the high street from next-gen.As Eurogamer reader Old Books put it: "There is just no excuse for digital games being this expensive. This is why this method of delivery has so many cheerleaders in the industry; they just want to rip everyone off. Why should these games be £20.00 more than on Steam and the like?"And when we compare PS4 first-party digital prices to their equivalent Xbox One games, Sony comes in more expensive. Where Killzone and Knack are £52.99, Xbox One exclusives Ryse, Dead Rising 3 and Forza 5 are £44.99 from the Xbox One Games Store. So, what's going on? We put Eurogamer readers' complaints to Fergal Gara, who runs PlayStation in the UK. He told us that the launch pricing of games on the PlayStation Store was affected by Sony's desire to keep shops on-side during the crucial console launch period."Digital pricing is an interesting question to raise," he replied."First of all, we want to support a healthy retail channel, so it's not in our interest to go and seriously undermine retail."Gara added that shops often price games lower than RRP in an effort to attract your business - more aggressively in the UK than in other countries."Let's not forget the UK is probably the most competitive retail space there is in the world. So when it comes to any recommended retail prices they will frequently choose to price significantly below them."You mentioned Amazon as an example. Amazon control their own pricing. We don't set the pricing. So if they decide on some crazy low prices they'd like to charge their customers, that doesn't mean it's appropriate for the PlayStation Store to match or follow that price. These are effectively all independent retailers."Despite this, Gara expects digital pricing to lower after the launch of the PS4 to something approaching parity with high street prices."Will there be a settling down and an alignment, and where would we expect digital pricing to be? We'd hope it would be roughly equivalent to street pricing for the disc. That's where we expect the dust to settle over time," he said.Sony's games aren't the only ones priced higher on the Store than in shops. EA's games, such as FIFA 14, are £55, as are the likes of Assassin's Creed 4, although it should be noted those prices are the same on the PS4 and Xbox One digital stores. Both Sony and Microsoft do not set the price of third-party games on their digital stores, but they do control factors that affect it, such as currency conversion."In respect to third-party content, obviously we're only part of the pricing equation, and the PlayStation Store is only part of the pricing equation," Gara said. "And the publisher has a big say particularly about the price they offer it to us at. So I can't be drawn into comment on that."So, what's to be done? Gara told Eurogamer Sony was "listening to the feedback" on digital pricing, and reiterated his believe that prices will go down after the PS4 launches as Sony strives to strike the right balance between digital and physical."Buying full games digitally is still a relatively new thing," he said. "Buying DLC and add-ons is already a significant business. So I think we'll find the right level that allows retail to coexist, selling discs and giving a great high street presence for our games, but also the digital option to coexist alongside it."But I would expect under normal circumstances that digital pricing for first-party titles will be in and around the street price you would expect to pay for the disc."Talking more broadly, Gara said with the PS4 Sony would try to offer a variety of games with a variety of price points. He pointed to indie games, such as Resogun, and free-to-play games, such as DC Universe, as an alternative to £50 games."The digital space is where we're introducing a swathe of titles right now, and a further stream of them to come. The indie sector is opening up and coming to PlayStation, which means price points are all about £50 or nothing. There are many price points in between, from free-to-play to the £10-15-20 type price points for maybe shorter experiences, but nonetheless, very affordable experiences."

After a very rocky start on the PlayStation 4, it appears that Battlefield 4's online play is improving on Sony's new console. A new patch just deployed for the PS4 version of Battlefield 4 seems to have cleared up many of the game's online issues, including disconnects, crashes and corrupted save files.
I did encounter one , but after restarting the game I personally managed to play several games of Conquest, Rush and Conquest Large without issue. Joystiq's Earnest Cavalli, who has lost a total of four save files, managed to play three Conquest matches without any crashes or corrupted saves.
Playing the Xbox One version earlier today, I experienced one crash but was otherwise able to play Rush, Conquest and Conquest Large with no significant problems. There was one moment when the Kinect decided to interpret some in-game sound as "Xbox, go home," thus disconnecting me from my session, but that's hardly Battlefield's fault.
The server browser is still experiencing problems on both Xbox One and PS4, specifically that it can't seem to locate Conquest matches at all. Applying a filter to locate Conquest matches simply returns no results, regardless of any other restrictions placed on the filter. For now, if you want to play Conquest, it looks like you're stuck using the Quick Match option. Other game types, including Conquest Large, show up in the server browser without any problems.

Still hunting for a launch day PS4? Then O2 may be your surprising saviour.
The mobile network is offering launch day stock of the console at 65 of its UK stores.
The cmachine is available as part of a bundle including a Sony Xperia Z1 handset. Also included is a copy of Killzone Shadow Fall and 12 months access to PlayStation Plus.
Provided on the O2 Refresh tariff, prices start at £89.99 up front and a £52.99 per month contract or £129.99 up front and a £46.99 monthly charge.
The Refresh deal also allows owners to pay off their hardware in one go, although they’ll still be tied to the calls, texts and data contract.
“Our bundle brings together the best of gaming and mobile this Christmas,” O2 UK’s GM of devices David Johnson stated. “We know our customers love to play and now they can enjoy brilliant gaming with O2, whether they’re at home or on the go. And with our O2 Refresh tariffs getting into the game is cheaper than ever before.”
The complete list of stores with day one stock can be found here. The deal doesn’t appear to be available online.

November 27th, 2013, 23:16 Posted By: wraggster
The launch of Xbox One and PS4 is awash with free games. Or rather, freemium games. Glorified demos that if players want full access to, they’ll have to pay.
Free-to-play has become the dominant force in mobile, almost entirely replacing the premium model. But EA Studios boss Patrick Söderlund is not convinced freemium will become so prevalent on next-gen.
“Only 18 months ago, most mobile games were full game downloads. Now I’d say 90 per cent are freemium,” he told MCV. “That change happened very quickly. Whether that will happen on the consoles I don’t know.
"I still think the console market is different to the mobile market. Mobile games are much cheaper. It’s like film. YouTube is free, but to see Gravity at the cinema, it will cost you money. One does not remove the other one.
“Will console games be free-to-play going forward? There will be some games that will be free-to-play but I also think that they will be different in nature to full games. I think a lot of people prefer to pay for the full game and get access to everything. And I wouldn’t use the word free-to-play - they are not free.
“I think all these business models will co-exist. Some prefer to pay $60 and get the full experience. Sometimes when I play freemium games on mobile I feel ‘these guys just want more money.’ When I pay $60 for Battlefield, I know what I am getting. And I think there are players that prefer that. And it’s not a case of one or another, they can both exist and there may be hybrids too.”
