PlayStation 4 sales reached the 1 million mark within the console's first 24 hours at retail, Sony announced this morning. The PS4 launched in North America on November 15, so that figure is restricted to the US & Canada; the console comes to Europe on November 29, and Japan on February 22, 2014.
SCEA President and CEO Jack Tretton is predicting 3 million sales by the end of the year, and with the European launch to come, that's looking increasingly realistic. Sony targets that figure to rise to 5 million by the close of the company's fiscal year in March 2014, by which point the console will have reached Japan.
According to data gatherer NPD, Sony only sold197,000 PS3 units to the US in its first two weeks of availability, with shortages of supply to blame. Around this time last year, the Wii U sold 425,000 units in the US within its first week at retail, with Nintendo going on to ship 3 million units worldwide by the end of 2012.

If you're a Vita-less gamer in Europe that's intrigued by the PlayStation 4'sRemote Play capabilities, Sony will throw in a free month of PlayStation Plus if you link a new Vita system to your SEN account by December 31.
If you're already a PS+ member, the extra month still stack atop your current subscription. You can check to see if your country is eligible for the promotion at the end of the involved PlayStation Blog post.
For those that take advantage of the deal, Sony will also send an email detailing a competition to win a PlayStation 4. If you'd rather not leave that up to luck, you can start hunting for one in stores on November 29. On an equally important note, PS4s were compatible with dancing cats on day one.

PlayStation Support has opened a thread on the official Sony forums for users experiencing problems with the PS4. The post lists "blue indicator light blinking," "no video/audio output to television" and "console powering off after blinking blue" as potential symptoms, but does not point to single cause.
Instead, the post suggests issues may stem from TV compatibility alongside potential issues with the PS4 power supply, hard drive or "other PS4 hardware." The frequency of these issues was not confirmed in the post.
To troubleshoot the system, PlayStation Support suggests performing a hard reset, checking your hard drive connection, booting the PS4 in Safe Mode and checking the firmware of your television. If none of the above work and you need to contact Sony for further assistance, the company suggests using live chat as opposed to calling in. All contact information can be found here.

Metal Gear Solid 5's prologue chapter Ground Zeroes was initially planned as a PlayStation 3 and PSP release before making the jump to multiple current and next-gen consoles, series producer Hideo Kojima revealed this week.
"Honestly, I really wanted to release Ground Zeroes right after [2010's PSP release of] Peace Walker," Kojima said. "Whether on PSP or PS3. But then we had development issues, some delays with Metal Gear Rising as well. And then we learned about next generation coming, so it ended up being the way it is now."
Kojima additionally notes that Ground Zeroes was split off from Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain to satisfy fan demand, as The Phantom Pain is still far from completion. "Of course it would be ideal to release Ground Zeroes and the main part of the game all together," Kojima said. "But at the same time given that this week we have the next generation of game consoles coming out, a lot of the fans wanted to play something sooner. And given that the main game is a rather big game and still in development, it will take a little bit more time to get it out. We decided to listen to the fans and put at least the prologue out there so people will get the experience."
Ground Zeroes will be priced at $30 when it premieres this spring for the PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. A variety of special edition bundlesare planned for retail release in Japan.

As few as 0.4 per cent of launch PS4 consoles are experiencing technical problems, Sony has stated.
It was revealed yesterday that a handful of consumers – as well as websites IGN and Kotaku – had experienced technical problems with their launch PS4s.
Sony, however, has claimed that failure rates are well within expectations.
"A handful of people have reported issues with their PlayStation 4 systems,” a statement supplied to IGN said. “This is within our expectations for a new product introduction, and the vast majority of PS4 feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
“We are closely monitoring for additional reports, but we think these are isolated incidents and are on track for a great launch.
“There have been several problems reported, which leads us to believe there isn’t a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of systems. The number of affected systems represents less than 0.4 per cent of shipped units to date, which is within our expectations for a new product introduction."
Hardware failure stories are undoubtedly a modern part of any console of tech launch. With millions of consumers rushing to buy devices at the same time it is inevitable that someone, somewhere will receive a faulty product.
And with the internet being the internet, just a handful of disgruntled customers can lead to an awful lot of noise.
But with the trials and tribulations of the Xbox 360’s Red Ring of Death still alive and well in the minds of many, hardware failure remains a very sensitive issue. Only once both launches are behind us will we have a true picture of whether there are problems present that are beyond the norm.

An exclusive mission will be included with the PS4 and PS3 versions of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.
Konami says the mission, entitled MGS1 Deja-Vu, “references key events from the original PSOne classic Metal Gear Solid” and “celebrates the series’ heritage across the PlayStation range”.
Added the release: “The exclusive mission tasks the user with reproducing famous scenes from the original game. As players recreate the iconic moments, a flashback system reproduces the original graphical style of the original PSOne game – complete with greatly reduced ‘vintage’ polygon count – and introduces familiar enemies and weather conditions for added authenticity.”
Konami says that the content will be included with both the physical and digital versions of the game.
Ground Zeroes, which will be out in the spring, will cost £29.99 on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360, although the digital version for the latter two machines will cost just £19.99.

Sony's next generation console hits store shelves today
The PlayStation 4 has arrived in the US, drawing crowds to midnight sales events that saw fans camping for days to make sure they were one of the first to receive Sony's next generation console.
With the Xbox One launch coming on November 22nd, this will easily go down as one of the biggest months in industry history.
It's been six years since the PlayStation 3 hit store shelves and sold out almost immediately, prompting a wave of mainstream media coverage – especially when fans began coming to blows over the last remaining units.
Hopefully Sony will have better supplies this launch so the press can focus on the changes the PS4 and its rival console promise to the millions of households worldwide with a gaming console.
Speaking to fans gathered outside a few opening events, it became obvious that core gaming is still quite healthy - and driven by a good deal of brand loyalty.
When asked why they were going with the PS4 as opposed the the Xbox One, the crowd replied simply, "Because it's better."
Doubtless those in line to buy Xbox One will say the same next week.
While issues like constant connectivity, social sharing features, anti-used policies, and the potential security risk posed by motion control cameras have dominated headlines around the two consoles prior to release, the crowd was either entirely uninformed or simply not interested in the apparent controversy.
They just wanted the new PlayStation.
The last generation saw the rise of multiplayer games from a novelty to the dominant force in the mainstream industry. Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 continue this trend, but Sony's console is placing a bigger premium on social network features and has included a button dedicated to the task.
With the rise of multiplayer came an increased assumption that players had a steady broadband internet connection, and while Microsoft has drawn more fire for its aggressive stance on this issue, it should be noted that the main new features of the PS4 place equal emphasis on an internet connection.
With consoles now in the majority of US households, the diversity of entertainment options available are more important than ever; the long-term winner of the console race could easily go to whichever platform holder best embraces that.
Gone are the days in which a console was used mainly for games, and this means the industry is now competing for consumer's leisure hours against other entertainment media.
It could be some time before the trends that will dominate the new console generation become apparent. The PlayStation 4 might offer social sharing, but that doesn't guarantee user adoption.
For now, those without can see the console unboxed by the staff at NPR, proof both that gaming is gaining real mainstream acceptance and that Americans do after all have a sense of irony.

Last of Us developer unveils latest title during US PS4 launch
Naughty Dog has announced a new Uncharted title is in development for PlayStation 4.
The studio revealed the new title earlier today as part of Spike's PS4 launch event.
The teaser trailer (below) features the voice of a man in search of revenge for a past betrayal. Naughty Dog creative director Amy Hennig has since confirmed the part was voiced by The Riches and Heroes actor Todd Stashwick.
Beyond that, there's not a lot of information available. The game was simply titled 'Uncharted' in the trailer, and no release window was mentioned in the video or by the developer.

PlayStation celebrates success of new developer event, plans to visit studios around the UK
Last month, Sony invited small studios and indies from across the UK to its London HQ for the inaugural PlayStation Open Days.
The two-day event served as an introduction to both the company’s platforms and its licensed developer programme, with Sony’s publisher and developer relations team talking studios through the process of signing up to develop for PlayStation.
The feedback from attendees has been “overwhelmingly positive”, according to senior account manager for development Agostino Simonetta. And Sony has taken on board calls for similar events outside London.
“We had a fantastic response from all the studios that came along,” he told Develop. “We’ve been asked to do another event in our office again, but some developers involved with local organisations have also asked us to do a roadshow. We’ve been asked to go to Scotland, the South West, the Midlands and more so we can host Open Days all around the country.
“We would like to do regional events like this quite regularly but obviously we’re getting close to launch. We’ll be very busy over Christmas, so we’re probably looking at the New Year.”
Simonetta went on to say that Sony is considering running these events on a quarterly basis in London, with supplementary regional events if there is enough demand.
“More often than that and we might run out of new things to talk about, but if people want it to be more regular, we can look at that,” he added. “It’s about having the right time between events, and not doing too many.”
SUPPORTING START-UPS
For its first PlayStation Open Days, Sony focused on introducing new studios to how its platforms, tools and developer relations team works. Going forward, it’s keen to explore other topics that will help studios grow their business – even if that means developing for rival platforms.
“We don’t want to just say how great it is to develop for PlayStation, or how beautiful the platforms are,” Simonetta explained. “The whole idea is not just to incentivise people to jump on PlayStation platforms but also to help them, giving them an insight on how to best approach their marketing and PR strategy. That’s something they can apply to PlayStation titles, but it can also help them in general.”
During the Open Days, Sony reminded studios that registering as a PlayStation licensed developer is actually free of charge. Not only has the platform holder seen a positive impact in terms of attendees signing up, it also believes word of mouth from those studios has led to other companies registering as well. The whole thing has boosted Sony’s confidence about how it approaches games developers.
“This was a confirmation that the open approach we’re taking is actually the right direction,” said Simonetta. “We know that PlayStation being an open platform force of publishing is the right approach.
“When we started to organise the Open Days, we thought they were a good idea, and the feedback we’ve had from people has been so overwhelmingly positive that it has validated the experiment. It helps us push forward with continuing this exercise.”

November 16th, 2013, 00:31 Posted By: wraggster
Update 2: A Sony representative has suggested the issue of broken PS4s affects less than one per cent of owners. The methodology for the statistic was not disclosed, making it difficult to cross-examine and verify.
Meanwhile, games site Kotaku was able to fix its broken PS4 after discovering a slight malfunction with the HDMI port.
Update 1: Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida says the company is looking into reports of PS4 hardware issues.
"Be assured we are investigating reported PS4 issues," he said onTwitter. "The number is very small compared to shipped, we believe they are isolated incidents."
Original story: A number of early PS4 owners are reporting various display problems with their console.
At least four claims of broken consoles have been posted online, two from games websites and two competition winners. These represent a small, but not negligible, percentage of systems already available ahead of launch.
Hardware issues are common and expected with new games systems, due to the unavoidable inefficiencies of new production yields.
The first issue was reported by Kotaku editor Stephen Totilo, who claims: "The first retail PS4 we got from Sony didn't work".
"In the past week, my Kotaku colleagues and I have used one pre-release PS4 and three retail PS4s with no problems. I've also heard from fellow gaming reporters who've used their PS4s with no problems.
"But the first retail unit that Sony provided me failed to work when I plugged it into a TV in Kotaku's office. A colleague and I were able to compare it to a second PS4 that did work and we found that the issue was rather simple: the bad unit had a faulty HDMI jack that we couldn't fully plug an HDMI cable into.
"It couldn't make a solid connection and therefore, apparently, couldn't transmit a stable signal to our TV. We tried different cables and monitors. The issue was with the console. Again, to be clear, the other four units we've tested first-hand have worked fine."
The second claim came from Reddit user Arogon, who was the winner of an early PS4 through a competition run by Sony and Taco Bell. "When I turn on my console it just sits there pulsing blue," Arogon explained.
"As far as I can tell it is supposed to turn white but it isn't doing that. There is no signal on my TV either."
Games site IGN later reported that it had suffered a similar issue with one of its retail PS4 consoles.
"IGN experienced the same issue, but it happened after the console was already working", it wrote.
"It may not have contributed to the issue, but ours stopped working the morning after we updated to version 1.50. Furthermore, IGN tried a wide variety of methods to correct the issue: new HDMI cables, new inputs, new TV, putting a disc into the system, connecting it to and from the Internet, and, of course, holding down the power button during boot-up for seven seconds to try to reset things. Nothing worked. Oddly enough, we tried adding light pressure to the top of console and it briefly flickered a few active home menu images on the television."
There is not a clear indication, for now, that the first waves of PS4s will have as high a failure rate as the pre-launch versions. Kotaku notes that every other retail system it has tried has worked, and another Reddit user who won a PS4 reports that, after a few login issues, the console is operating as desired.
CVG has contacted Sony for comment.

Update: EA has withdrawn an earlier statement in which it claimed that PS4 firmware update 1.50 is causing 'stability issues' for all PS4 titles.
A company rep told has Kotaku that the statement, which originally appeared on the official EA Help site before being swiftly removed, was "posted in error".
"Players with questions about PS4 connectivity can visit [PlayStation.com] for the latest updates," they added.
CVG has contacted Sony for further clarification on the matter.
Original report follows:
PlayStation 4's day-one firmware update is causing "stability issues" affecting "all games on the PS4", according to EA.
The publishing giant published - and swiftly removed - a blog post on Friday with a statement claiming that firmware version 1.50 - which must be installed to enable a large list of major system features - is causing "crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections" on the console.
The blog post is currently unavailable, but here's EA's statement in full (via Kotaku):
"Sony has released a firmware update for the PlayStation 4 that is required for many features on the console. However, this update also results in stability issues while playing games on the system.
"This affects all games on the PS4, including EA titles, causing crashing/freezing and non-responsive connections between the player's console and their TV Screen.
"Unfortunately since it's an issue with Sony's firmware, it requires a new update to fix it. Sony is working to resolve the issue as quickly as they can. They will update their System Update page as new versions are made available, and we will keep this page updated as we find out more." Sony itself is yet to acknowledge any such issue with the update.
This editor has spent a number of hours playing first-party title Killzone: Shadow Fall on a US retail unit running firmware 1.50 with no such errors.
PS4 firmware update 1.50 is required for several important system features including online multiplayer, Remote Play, gameplay sharing, 'play as you download', party chat, Blu-ray and DVD playback, second screen capabilities and more.

Yes, yes, yes, the PlayStation 4's all super-exciting right now but let's not forget its portable sibling the Vita. It's been a bit quiet on the handheld front of late, though that's set to change with the release of Tearaway at the end of next week and, a couple of weeks later, roll7's OlliOlli. It's understandable if you're not too familiar with the latter - the work of a small New Cross team making its debut on dedicated gaming hardware, it's a score-minded skating game with a savage difficulty backed up by some elegant mechanics. It's probably best not to think of it as a lo-fi successor to Tony Hawks, but rather the bastard-hard combination of Joe Danger's score attack and Super Meat Boy's tendency to catch you up in fraught and engaging loops.I got to play it for an hour or so earlier this week, and was left very much impressed. There's no shortage of indies on the Vita right now, but OlliOlli deserves a place alongside Spelunky and the yet to be released Luftrausers as amongst the best. We'll be able to bring you a full review nearer OlliOlli's full release towards the end of the year, and hopefully to tell you a little more about roll7. I think they're ones to watch out for - like FuturLab before them, they're a smart, talented bunch that's going some interesting places with a little help from Sony.
