If you're getting a PS4 this Friday, here's a handy tip: Copy the necessary version 1.5 firmware update onto a USB stick and install it on your console that way. It's probably not the best idea to try and access Sony's servers while swarms of other people are trying to do the same thing on launch day.
Simply head over to this PlayStation page and download the firmware. Then go into your USB stick and create a "PS4" folder and an "UPDATE" folder inside of that. Now it's simply a matter of copying the 308MB in files over to your USB stick and you're good to go.
Speaking of launch, today our PS4 review went live, as did reviews on some of the more high-profile launch games like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Knack, Resogunand Contrast. We'll continue to roll out coverage on the launch of the PS4, sokeep an eye on this link for new content as it's made available.

Nearly lost in the chaos of the imminent PlayStation 4 launch is another Sony gadget, the PlayStation Vita TV, which made its Japanese debut today.
The Vita TV serves double duty, both as a device for streaming media options such as Hulu to your television and also as a stationary Vita analogue. The Vita TV is said to support 1,300 games from the Vita, PSP and other, older Sony platforms, as well as support for the PS3's DualShock 3 controller. Though the selection of compatible titles is slated to grow over time, on debut, the system will support standouts like Persona 4 Golden and Lumines: Electronic Symphony. Further, the Vita TV will also support Remote Play with either PlayStation 3 titles that support it, or the upcoming PlayStation 4.
You can find full technical specs on the Vita TV in our story on the device, or if you'd prefer moving pictures, YouTube user "RedSunGamerTV" offers anunboxing video. Currently, the Vita TV bears a price tag of ¥9,945 (about $100). Sony has yet to announce a Western release for the Vita TV, so if you plan to import one, expect to pay a bit more.

Towards the end of last month Sony started catching some flack for not offering MP3 or CD support on the PS4, a limitation that seemed suspiciously like a plot to get consumers to sign up for Music Unlimited - Sony's answer to Spotify. This is not the case, according to president of Sony's Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida. On a recent episode of Giant Bomb's Interview Dumptruck, Yoshida said he was surprised by the backlash as the company didn't feel that MP3 and CD support was a highly valued feature."The biggest surprise for us all internally at Sony was there are so many people who passionately reacted to our announcement that there's no MP3 support or CD support on day one. It's not like we actively decided 'let's not do this feature so people will have to subscribe to Music Unlimited,'" he said. "The focus has been more on the game features. Some of the features we wanted but we couldn't get in on day one."As such, Sony is working to add these features in an update. "We didn't really think about MP3 or CD," he continued. "We thought 'we're going to do that eventually.'... It caught us off-guard. People don't really talk about these features, right? Some people get really mad and [say] 'I'll cancel my pre-order!' So as we speak, people in Japan - the system guys - are discussing when we can put these features in."
Elsewhere, Polygon went in depth with Music Unlimited and noted that it will simply overlay your music on top of what's already playing, so you'll have to manually mute a game's soundtrack to prevent your tunes from blaring over an already playing score. Sony's director of music services Anu Kirk said that some games can disable this option, but we're likely only going to see that in music titles where the in-game soundtrack is heavily tied to the mechanics.Kirk also noted that the Music Unlimited team played no part in Sony's decision to not support MP3s or CDs at launch. "I can see how people could see it as some kind of diabolical plot, but that's not how we roll," he stated. "Our brief here at Music Unlimited was to just make the best music app available for the PS4, and that's the extent of our knowledge of it."Somewhat disappointingly, Music Unlimited won't have a visualiser, which Kirk said just came down to a matter of resources. "There are lots of cool things we want to get in there, but even in getting this app together there were a lot of things that were essential that we had to put on the back burner," he said.Music Unlimited will come pre-installed on PS4s and offer subscriptions ranging from $4.99-$9.99 depending on what devices the user wants to hook it up to.

Consumers will be able to sell and trade-in their PS4 games, Sony has once again asserted.
You thought this one was already done and dusted, right? Well, an inclusion in Sony’s new PlayStation T&Cs yesterday had some worrying that perhaps there had been a change of policy.
The document reads: “You must not resell either disc-based software or software downloads, unless expressly authorised by us and, if the publisher is another company, additionally by the publisher.”
However, Sony Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida moved quickly on Twitter to dismiss the fears, clarifying that: “If you are concerned about our new European TOS, we confirm that you are able to sell or share your disc PS4 products, including in EU.”

Sony will not release Media Molecule’s PS Vita debut Tearaway at retail, it has confirmed.
The game was listed at various online stores, and as we reported a few days ago, there was quite a disparity between that suggested retail price and the price of the digital version on PSN.
Sony’s decision to skip a retail release for Tearaway is the latest step in its increased push towards PSN. It has also been heavily promoting PlayStation Plus via email newsletters and social media lately.

Update: It looks like Radioshack has found a few extra PlayStation Vita units kicking around its warehouse. The 3G/WiFi edition is priced at $160. If the units sell out and you want to be notified of when either the Wi-Fi or 3G model is back in stock, you can opt-in to email notifications through the retailer's website.
It's been a long time since we've seen a Radioshack but apparently they're still around. In fact, the electronics retailer is currently selling the Wi-Fi version of the PS Vita for $160 - and that includes free shipping on all orders over $25.
The deal is impeccably timed to coincide with the launch of the PS4, which goes on sale in the US this Friday. Last week Sony prepared the handheld to play nice with the PS4 by issuing the 3.00 update for PS Vita, unlocking Remote Playfeatures through a new "PS4 Link" app. The app unlocks playing "most" PS4 games on your Vita over Wi-Fi through Remote Play and opens up the handheld as a supplementary second-screen display for select PS4 games.

Oh, cruel fate! The PlayStation Camera – previously known as the PlayStation Eye – can't be used to create a PlayStation Network profile picture for the next-gen PlayStation 4. Although having your real name displayed is happening, the only way to pull real-world photos of yourself for the profile pic is through Facebook integration. We speculate it has to do with Facebook's anatomical detecting algorithms.
For those who don't have a Facebook account (or don't want to use it), they'll have a selection of Sony avatars available, like things are now for PlayStation 3 and Vita. Also, if somebody wants to be your PSN friend, searching by your real name (even if you've selected to use your real name) won't be an option. To find you, they'll need your PSN ID. So, please try to keep it simple. You know who you are, xXxZOMGPUPPAYZxXx.

Voice commands aren't going to wake up newly purchased PS4s from standby, nor will they do anything with the console's third-party apps. As Sony reps told our friends at Engadget, more interface functionality will be added eventually for the add-on PS Camera and its microphone, and they "hope" to integrate apps with it in due course. However, at launch it seems your vocal cords won't do all that much with this next-gen console.
According to Engadget, new PS4 and PS Camera owners will be able to switch off their consoles using voice commands, as well as open games. The Camera's facial-recognition tech will also work for logging in, but ti's unclear if there are other voice commands that will be available at launch.
In contrast, Microsoft is pushing strongly with its in-the-box voice integration, showcasing the Xbox One's array of quickly activated commands in a 12-minute real-time demo of the user interface. As Engadget notes, Sony' isn't looking to match Microsoft's focus on camera and microphone input at launch, not at all surprising given the Camera isn't included with the PS4, unlike Kinect with the Xbox One.

Much like a celebrity just before a book launch, the PS4 will make a returning appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon later this week. If you recall, Fallon got the first PS4 demo after the console's reveal back in February, when he and guest Anthony Anderson tried out Killzone: Shadow Fall. It's hard to forget how Anderson handled the DualShock like a cat who'd just had his tail pulled, or a potato baked on the surface of the sun. It was not pretty.
There are no details in NBC's schedule about what to expect from this pre-launch demo, but we know Sony is planning "exclusive world premieres and announcements" at its PS4 All Access show that starts later in the day. What are the chances the PS4 announcement party gets going a bit early? We'll find out either way when Fallon's show airs at 12:35AM ET, Thursday, November 15 (9:35PM PT November 14) on NBC.

It looks like exclusive Metal Gear Solid 5 content will be coming to Sony's platforms, assuming a side-long glance at a promotional poster tweeted by series creator Hideo Kojima is anything to go on.
The image in question focuses on a new Metal Gear Solid 5 promotional poster. Next to the poster stands a cardboard plaque which contains words that are barely legible due to the size of the image in Kojima's original tweet. However, if you zoom in on the text, you're able to barely make out what the thing says:Metal Gear Solid V Ground Zeroes
Prologue to Metal Gear Solid V The Phantom Pain
Takes place in 1975 after Peacewalker and nine years before the phantom pain
Multiple missions and central story and side-ops missions
Exclusive content for PlayStation platform
Spring 2014 Videogamer came up with roughly the same interpretation of the blurry text as we just did, though we invite you all to take a crack at it for yourselves, either by visiting Kojima's tweet, or going directly to a much larger version of the image.
It is currently unknown what this PlayStation-exclusive content might be. We contacted Metal Gear publisher Konami for more information, but were met with a boilerplate "no comment."

At a New York event yesterday, Sony demonstrated install speeds - the time from the point the disc is inserted, install is initiated and play can begin - for retail versions of two PS4 launch games: Knackand Killzone: Shadow Fall
Knack, the action-adventure game from PS4 architect Mark Cerny, will take only tens of seconds before play can begin after priming the installation, Kotakureports. Killzone: Shadow Fall will take a bit longer to reach play, Polygonreports, because there is an unskippable introduction movie and mandatory profile set-up. Guerrilla Games Managing Director Hermen Hulst told Polygon it takes under three minutes total to get into gameplay.
Sony outlined the launchlimitations of its PS4 console last month. All retail PS4 games will have to install data to the console's 500GB hard drive, which can be manually swapped out should the need for more space arise. The PS4 won't let users store data on an external hard drive or memory stick.

Following its current-generation debut on October 29, Assassin's Creed 4 has now officially sailed into a next-generation dock, thanks to the release of its PlayStation 4 incarnation.
Described (by publisher Ubisoft) as the "most beautiful chapter of the franchise to date," and by our own 4/5 star review as "a vibrant historical adventure, drawn from bold characters and edge-of-your-seat sailing," the game offer players the chance to live the life of a pirate who spends his time sailing the high seas, inexplicably avoiding scurvy AND chlamydia, and changing the course of history by stabbing jerks in the neck. Helpfully, this can all be accomplished without being tethered to a TV, as the PS4 iteration ofAssassin's Creed 4 supports Vita Remote Play right out of the box.
Ubisoft has also used this opportunity to explain the game's Season Pass, though all the information presented today can also be found in our reportfrom early October.

Sony revealed that PlayStation Network users are now able to upgrade Sub Accounts to Master Accounts, ending the payment and content restrictions currently in place to protect players under the age of 18. Speaking withPolygon, Sony product manager Chris Thielbar noted that the unannounced policy change was made "very recently."
As part of the PlayStation Network's guidelines, minors must create a Sub Account under a parent or guardian's Master Account, and are subject to spending limits imposed by the Master Account's payment options. Until recently, however, Sub Accounts were unable to upgrade to Master Accounts even after a user turned 18; Sony instead recommended that "the sub account holder should create a new master account when they reach 18."
Account transition functionality is now available upon request for PlayStation 3 users, and will be accessible for PlayStation 4 owners when the console launches later this week.

PS4 port Awesomenauts Assemble won't make the console's launch in North America after all, but Ronimo's Jasper Koning sent Joystiq word that his studio's "still hoping to make the European launch, but it's going to be tight."
"Worst case we think is still one or two weeks after [the European PS4 launch,]" Koning told us when asked to clarify. "As for the Steam version, we expect to have [an] announcement sometime later this week."
So it's far from a guarantee that Ronimo's 2D MOBA will make it in time for the PS4's European launch on November 29, but if it doesn't then it shouldn't take too long to show up. Whenever it hits, Awesomenauts Assemble will include the game plus all the features from the fundraised Starstorm expansion, including custom games setup, team deathmatch, five new characters, a new map, and some new tunes, too. As for the spectator and replay modes, Ronimo says they're covered by the console's streaming capability.
