The Vita TV launched in Japan last month, and while the roughly $100 microconsole only managed third place on the sales charts, it was far closer to the top two systems (3DS XL and the Vita proper) than the rest of the pack, more than doubling sales of its fellow TV-bound consoles like the Wii U and PlayStation 3. However, its performance in Japan will have limited bearing on its rollout in the West, Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House told Eurogamer.
"The positioning of Vita TV may be different between Japan and some of the other markets," House said, adding, "This may sound slightly counter-intuitive, but we wanted to launch in Japan first because I feel there really hasn't been a critical driver or device that's driven the adoption of streaming content overall. It's still very much in a nascent stage in Japan compared to some of the markets in Europe or the US."
The executive said that gives Sony the chance to create a new market with the Vita TV, which combines the sort of content streaming seen in products like Roku with the ability to play non-touchscreen Vita games on the TV with a DualShock 3 controller.
"It's a very different landscape when you look at the US and Europe - much greater establishment of streaming video services, and much greater understanding of what that concept's all about," House said. "So we see strong market potential elsewhere in the world, but it will be a different road to market for the US and Europe than has been the case in Japan."
Sony has not yet revealed Western launch details for the Vita TV.

Two more of PS4’s PSN features have been reactivated by Sony.
The platform holder announced last week that a number of features were to be temporarily shut down in an effort to keep PSN up and running amidst the launch rush that accompanied its UK and European release on Friday.
As of yesterday the Live Item and Content Information screens have been reactivated. These allow users to check out their friends’ activities in specific titles. The What’s New was turned back on the day before.
On Sunday December 1st the company began reactivating voucher redemptions, although this is still being rolled out.
Reports of more general issues, such as trouble signing in, appear to have now faded.

Tekken Revolution is free to play. Released in June exclusively for PS3, it has a starting roster of eight characters, and features both solo and multiplayer modes. Each play costs a virtual coin, which regenerate at a rate of one per hour in singleplayer or per half-hour for online. When these run out, you can buy Premium Coins from the PSN Store. It’s just one of Namco’s many experiments in free-to-play gaming.Tekken boss Katsuhiro Harada, who is heading up Namco Bandai’s adventures in F2P, notes that, far from being a futuristic or even contemporary model, the approach has its roots in the same place as Namco: the arcade. “The outlay in the arcade is very low. For just ¥100, you can try out a game, or a particular character in that game, and see whether you like it,” he says. “So this is a way to attract new players who might be interested in Tekken, but [aren’t] necessarily willing to spend $59.99 to try it.”Namco Bandai’s first F2P trial run with a big-name series came at the suggestion of board members in June 2012, who felt a new approach could work for its Gundam games. It did. Mobile Suit Gundam: Battle Operation is a six-on-six mech battler, and its daily limit pay model brought in ¥700 million (£4.4 million) in months, success enough to persuade the company to try going F2P with some of its other key series. Since then, Namco has announced SoulCalibur: Lost Swords (PS3), Ridge Racer Driftopia (PC/PS3) and Ace Combat Infinity (PS3).

Now that both next-gen consoles are out in the wild, our intention was to publish an ‘indie verdict on next-gen’ piece this week. Putting together that feature becomes a little tricky when, having sent a flurry of emails to independent developers, not one of the studios we contacted had actually bought a PS4 or Xbox One.Sony and Microsoft’s new consoles might well have enjoyed record-breaking launches, but indie interest – certainly among the developers we asked – seems to lie elsewhere right now. For Playdead’s Jeppe Carlsen, Wii U, with a new Mario in tow, is currently the fresher and more innovative console; Ustwo’s Dan Gray bought a Vita instead of a new home console last week; The Astronauts’ Adrian Chmielarz believes neither offer anything that can’t be done on PC already and Size Five Games’ Dan Marshall is still waiting for one or the other to truly dazzle him. Simogo’s Simon Flesser, meanwhile, says that “they don’t seem to do much that most of my plastic boxes at home can’t do already.”These responses can’t speak for the entire indie community, of course, but their common apathy is still a little surprising, given how hard each platform holder has been trying to convince indies of these new consoles’ importance. “I am not really interested in any of the launch titles,” says Playdead’s Jeppe Carlsen. “At the end of this generation, the software really started lacking in quality on both consoles (except for The Last Of Us), but I am pretty excited about what is to come, and expect both new consoles to provide fantastic content in a year or two. I am happy my money was spent buying great Nintendo titles instead.”

SCE boss Andrew House says it launched the system in Japan first due to the lack of a market leader
Sony plans to take a very different approach to its streaming-centric Vita TV device when it eventually makes its way to Western markets.
The microconsole has got off to a slow start in Japan with sales of just 42,000 units during its first week of release in November. It’s currently available as a $99 standard SKU or as part of a $150 bundle.
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Andrew House has told Eurogamer that its release in the West, which is a market far more familiar with streaming content than Japan, will be handled very differently.
“We see strong market potential elsewhere in the world, but it will be a different road to market for the US and Europe than has been the case in Japan," he said.
"It's a very different landscape when you look at the US and Europe – much greater establishment of streaming video services, and much greater understanding of what that concept's all about. It's still very much in a nascent stage in Japan compared to some of the markets in Europe or the US.
"This may sound slightly counter-intuitive, but we wanted to launch in Japan first because I feel there really hasn't been a critical driver or device that's driven the adoption of streaming content overall.
"We felt there was therefore an opportunity to leverage the strengths of PlayStation Vita, which as you know is quite strong in Japan in terms of game line-up, but combine that with the features of a media streaming box, and offer something packaged newly for the Japanese consumer and possibly be at the forefront of creating a new market via that device."

The PlayStation Store has issued its weekly update, which is headlined by Spearhead Games' PS4 puzzle game, Tiny Brains. In our review from earlier today, we called the game "accessible and adorably illustrated" with just a tinge of dark humor.
PS Vita launch game Escape Plan also comes over to the PS4 today with its cross-buy functionality intact, so if you've already picked up the game on another system you can play it on PS4 gratis. On the PS Vita side, both Rainbow Moon and Stick it to the Man make their platform debut today.
PS Plus members can download a free copy of Grid 2 on PS3 today. On top of that, there's the ongoing holiday sale to consider, plus price adjustments on games like Limbo, Saints Row: The Third and more.

SideQuest Studios' tactical RPG Rainbow Moon is now available for the PlayStation Vita, introducing newcomers to its dungeon-crawling, loot-based approach to the genre while wooing veterans with DLC import options.
Released for the PlayStation 3 in 2012, Rainbow Moon focuses on character growth and customization, allowing players to outfit their party members with new abilities via add-on content. The game features Cross-Save functionality, and previous purchases carry over into the newly launched PS Vita version, giving fans the option of either resuming their quest or starting a new game with bonuses intact.
Players who purchased the PS3 version of Rainbow Moon can pick up the PS Vita port for 50 percent off of its launch price this week, and PlayStation Plus members receive an additional discount. A free 90-minute demo is also available, allowing players to resume their progress in the full version upon purchase.

Renegade Kid's plane-hopping platformer Mutant Mudds Deluxe will debut for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on December 17 as a Cross-Buy release, studio co-founder Jools Watsham announced.
The PSN version of Mutant Mudds Deluxe will be priced at $9.99, and includes Cross-Save functionality across both platforms. Players in Europe will need to wait a little longer before joining the fight against the Mudds, however, as Watsham notes that "the cost and logistical hassle" of age-rating submissions has delayed the game's European launch on PSN and the Wii U eShop.
Watsham additionally revealed that work on the upcoming sequel Mutant Mudds 2 has been put on hold while the team finishes up work on its current project, Treasurenauts. "We feel that it is healthier/better for us to develop a new 2D platform game in between Mutant Mudds and Mutant Mudds 2 to maintain perspective on what Mutant Mudds 2 needs to be," he explained.
Treasurenauts has been delayed to next year, and a release date for Mutant Mudds 2 has not been announced. Series fans have a new batch of content to look forward to, however, as Watsham revealed that the original Nintendo 3DS version of Mutant Mudds will receive a free update "sometime in 2014."

Polished pinball series Zen Pinball 2 will make its way to PlayStation 4 on December 17, but that's not the best part. Developer Zen Studios also announced this morning that folks who already own PS3 or Vita versions of the tables coming to PS4 will be able to download the tables for free.
The Zen Pinball platform is a free download anyway and it comes with the adorable Sorcerer's Lair table. The tables typically cost $3 apiece and the latest addition will be Marvel's Doctor Strange, with more Marvel and Star Wars-branded tables coming in 2014. The list of tables after the break (and in the video above) are the ones being transferred. From here on out it's all new content.
We should also point out that Star Wars Pinball is currently free if you're a member of PlayStation Plus, so if you download it now, you'll have access to it on PS4 when the platform launches.

On the second deal of Christmas, PlayStation Europe offered to me: Diablo 3 on PS3 for £30, and Spelunky for £5.50 on Vita, with an additional 10 percent off Derek Yu's hard-as-nails platformer for PlayStation Plus members ... in a pear tree.
Alright, it's not catchy, but it is a decent second batch for the 12 Deals of Christmas. The PS Europe promo runs until Christmas Day, with today's deals available until December 5.
A word of caution on Spelunky: The game should feature cross-buy, meaning a purchase of the Vita version unlocks the PS3 version. That said, the PlayStation Blog's deal specifically marks out Vita, and on the PlayStation Store the offer is only for the Vita version. We've reached out to Sony to confirm and clarify what today's discount specifically applies to.
Update: A SCEE representative confirmed to Joystiq the discounted Vita version of Spelunky features cross-buy, so if you buy it you'll unlock the PS3 version too.

Atlus announced it's shipped 700,000 copies of Persona 4: Golden worldwide, meaning plenty of people have stayed up late to tune in into the excellent Vita remake. To celebrate those numbers, Atlus is discounting the JRPG on Japan's PlayStation Store (sorry, everyone else) to ¥4,980 between December 11 and January 8.
The news comes as several new Persona games bear down on us, including aPersona 4 rhythm game for Vita and expanded arcade fighter The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold. Not forgetting cutesy Etrian Odyssey-like Persona Q for 3DS, and certainly not the big kahuna: Persona 5 on PS3.

Omni Systems' space-faring strategy game Eufloria HD is taking root on PS Vita this month. This new port, which doubles its predecessor's frame rate, adds refined touch controls and improves upon the visuals through greater pixel density, will be available in North America on December 17 and in Europe on December 18.
Eufloria HD focuses on a group of interstellar lifeforms called Euflorians. Their goal is to colonize asteroids, grow and expand, with players assuming the role of a commander who must guide and nurture the Euflorians' development in real-time.
In our review, we particularly enjoyed "the dreamy, ambient score" but cautioned that the game can be a bit overwhelming to real-time strategy newcomers. No price for Eufloria HD has been announced, though the original PS3 release was priced at $9.99.

Wedbush's Pachter says more than half of consoles will be going to North America, with half of those to GameStop
Sony
Sony has promised to have "substantial" resupplies of the PlayStation 4 before the end of the year, but has given no indication as to what qualifies as substantial. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has stepped in to fill that information void, telling investors in a note this morning that he believes Sony is making PS4s at the rate of a million systems per month.
Pachter followed up on Sony's announcement today that it had sold 2.1 million systems worldwide, saying that number fits well with previous estimates that Sony began manufacturing PS4s for retail on September 1, and that it faces a gap of up to three weeks from a system's creation to the time it arrives on shelves.
"We expect Sony to continue to ship 1 million consoles per month, so as of the end of January, we believe Sony will have manufactured a cumulative 5 million consoles and will have shipped 4.25 - 4.5 million," Pachter said. "We expect the 55 percent allocation to North America to continue through January, and then revert to a more normalized 40 percent of units once Sony launches in Japan and other countries. We think that Microsoft is on a similar production schedule, with similar allocations to North America."
Pachter added that specialty retailer GameStop has been receiving roughly half of the systems shipped to North America, and that it will continue to take up that share of the allocations through December. In the New Year, Pachter expects the company's share to be dialed back to a "more customary" 30 percent.
If the shipment projections are accurate, the PS4 would be more than holding up its part of publishers' predictions that Sony and Microsoft would combine to ship 10 million units of their new systems by the end of March.

Atlus touts success of controversial beat-'em-up on Sony platforms; Vita-exclusive Persona 4 Golden ships 700,000
Atlus has found that niche titles can still put up big numbers. The Japanese publisher today gave sales updates for two of its recent hits, saying the fantasy beat-'em-up Dragon's Crown has shipped 800,000 copies to date, while Persona 4 Golden has shipped 700,000 copies. Both tallies include the number of copies downloaded through Sony's PlayStation Store.
First released for the PlayStation 3 and PS Vita in July, Dragon's Crown sparked plenty of debate upon its release for its hyper-sexualized depiction of female characters. Developed by VanillaWare, the game was originally set for a 2012 release from UTV Ignition Games, but Atlus later acquired the rights to the project from the company and added it to its own release schedule in Japan and North America.
Although Persona 4 Golden shipped fewer copies in a longer stretch of time (first released in June of 2012), its total may be more impressive. The game is a remake of the 2008 PlayStation 2 RPG Persona 4, and managed to hit its sales mark despite releasing exclusively on the PS Vita.
Those shipment numbers are poised to grow further, as Atlus is discounting the downloadable versions of both games in Japan until the New Year.

Take-Two head expects systems' installed base to outgrow predecessors, barring economic downturn
Take-Two Interactive
take2europe.com
The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are off to encouraging starts at retail, but they've got a long way to go before surpassing the installed base of their immediate predecessors, which have already combined for more than 160 million systems sold worldwide. It took the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 eight years to sell that many units, but Take-Two Interactive chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick thinks their successors can reach that mark considerably quicker.
In an investor presentation at Credit Suisse' 2013 Technology Conference today, Zelnick responded in the affirmative when asked if the PS4 and Xbox One would surpass their predecessors in five years. While he stressed it was too early to put any stock in that prediction, it's a bet he would take.
"I'd specifically say yes because it appears that--and this is largely anecdotal but tablets are a good example--all these new iterations of more and more exciting hardware seem to have picked up in velocity generationally compared to five or 10 years ago," Zelnick said. "But if we had a big market meltdown, for example, a repeat of '08 and '09 in three years, or two years, or two minutes, that would influence it. But if this economy stays on this track, yeah, I feel good about it."
"I'm not psyched about a business where 3 percent of your customers pay you... I'm skeptical that for very high-end products, that's the way the business goes."
Strauss Zelnick on F2P
Earlier in the session, Zelnick touched on Take-Two's plan to navigate the generational transition, saying that companies who tend to thrive in such times are those with strong creative teams, strong owned intellectual property, strong technology, and a strong balance sheet. Not surprisingly, he said Take-Two fits the bill on all counts. However, when pushed for more details on what the company has coming in the pipeline, Zelnick said Take-Two has been "more forthcoming than we've ever been before," telling investors the company has more than 10 projects in the works for the new systems, both in existing franchises and in new intellectual property.
"Beyond that, I'm frankly not sure what color would benefit you," Zelnick said. "If I said we had a title called Steven's Life in Elementary School next October and I told you it was going to sell 20 million units, what credibility could that possibly have? New intellectual property is a risky business."
When asked about whether the lack of backward compatibility in the new systems would hinder the consumer adoption rate as gamers would be unable to play their old games, Zelnick dismissed the concern.
"I don't see it as a problem at all, and certainly we have the physical ability to port, and it wouldn't be particularly costly," Zelnick said. "The question is, 'Is there an economic opportunity for us to do so?' I don't think backwards compatibility affects consumers at all."
Throughout the event, Zelnick emphasized Take-Two's "ecumenical" approach to providing entertainment, saying the company would be flexible when it comes to business models, methods of distributions, and platforms.
"That said, our DNA remains these very high end, AAA, immensely immersive experiences, and I don't really see us deviating from that," Zelnick said.
And while Take-Two is exploring the free-to-play market in Asia, it doesn't sound like the company is planning to shift heavily in that direction anytime soon.
"I'm not psyched about a business where 3 percent of your customers pay you, which is what you're dealing with," Zelnick said. "But we're flexible. If that's the way the business evolves, as long as we can get paid and make a profit doing it, we're happy to contemplate it. I'm skeptical that for very high-end products, that's the way the business goes. I think you'll continue to sell those high-end products as the entry point, and then you'll have in-game monetization for certain sold items and free items."

December 4th, 2013, 00:24 Posted By: wraggster
New research from Way To Blue has suggested that PS4 put in a stronger social media performance than Xbox One in their respective 72 hour launch periods.
UK data showed that in its first three days of availability Xbox One had 50,703 social media mentions, 11 per cent of which showed a ‘propensity to purchase’. PS4, meanwhile, saw 55,368 mentions in its first three days with a 12 per cent propensity to purchase.
Similar purchase propensity stats were seen earlier in the year for key games such as Grand Theft Auto V, Battlefield 4, Call od Duty: Ghosts and Assassin’s Creed IV.
Overall that saw PS4 claim a 52 per cent share of the associated social media traffic, according to these numbers.
A conflicting report from Sythesio last week claimed that PS4 had a 40 per cent social media advantage, generating three times as much positive coverage as Xbox One.
