Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House finds himself in the auspicious position of assuring a "good supply" of PlayStation 4 consoles across the holidays. Speaking to Game Informer, House said Sony had a "good sense" of ramping up production to meet rising demands, evidenced by the 1 million consoles sold on launch day last week
However, as House explained it's not simply a matter of having enough consoles to meet demand. The perception of a console that looks like it isn't selling can be catastrophic, and Sony has to balance the need to meet customer demands against the danger of having too much stock on store shelves.
"We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they've been loyal to brand for so long," House told Game Informer. "On the other hand, we're not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we'll be in good supply. The sales target that I announced for the company is 5 million units sold by the end of our fiscal year. March 31, 2014"
The PS4 launch is ongoing, with Europe to receive the console on November 29, and then Japan a while later on February 22, 2014. Of the later Japanese launch, House said, "We paid careful attention to when we had enough confidence that we would have developed from the ground-up experiences that the Japanese consumer would really respond to."
For one, the PS4's arrival in Japan coincides with the launch of Final Fantasy 14's beta on the system, while free-to-play Capcom RPG Deep Down enters beta near that time too.

Sony has hired management consulting firm Bain & Company to identify $100 million in cuts, Bloomberg reported. The cuts would reportedly include job losses, though how the cuts to the company's costs would divide out among its entertainment divisions is unknown.
The report follows a second quarter loss reported by Sony of ¥19.3 billion ($197 million). As of its late October financial report, the company said it expects to ship 15 million PS3 and PS4 systems combined, with SCEA boss Jack Tretton recently projecting three million PS4 consoles sold by year's end. Sony did manage to sell one million PS4 units in the system's first 24 hours on shelves; Whether that factors in to the reported job losses remains to be seen.

Sony addressed numerous reports of defective PlayStation 4 systems this week, and estimated that the number of damaged consoles is relatively low.
"The number of affected PS4 systems is less than one percent, which represents a very small percentage of total units shipped to date and is within the expected range for a new product introduction," a Sony representative toldEngadget. "We understand the frustration of consumers that have had a problem and are working with them and our retail partners to help troubleshoot issues and ensure affected units are exchanged."
Given that several issues were reported to Sony, the hardware manufacturer believes "there isn't a singular problem that could impact a broader percentage of PS4 units." The company previously said it is investigating"isolated" PS4 issues and offered troubleshooting steps for players experiencing "blinking blue light" problems.

This week's PlayStation Network offerings are marked by NBA Live 14's arrival on PS4, the only game to launch on PS4 through PSN for the week. Additionally, the PS Vita's lone addition is The Amazing Spider Man.
Need for Speed: Rivals headlines the list of new, digitally distributed PS3 games – though it already launched on PS4 – and it's joined by a number of other PS3 games: Adventure Time: Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know,Air Conflicts: Vietnam, AquaPazza, Arcania The Complete Tale, Blood Knights,Contrast, Dynasty Warriors 6, Farming Simulator, SoulCalibur 2 HD Online, Stick It to the Man and Young Justice: Legacy.
Like Need for Speed: Rivals, Contrast also previously launched on PS4 in addition to Xbox 360 and PC, the PS4 version being free for PlayStation Plus subscribers. As we noted yesterday, said PS Plus members can downloadBinary Domain and Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD for free and Worms 2: Armageddon for $4.50 this week. Sony also opened up pre-orders on PSN forThe Last of Us' single-player Left Behind DLC, which will launch in early 2014.

November 19th, 2013, 01:35 Posted By: wraggster
The PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 controller may seem like the logical evolution of Sony's gamepad design, but we now know that it wasn't always destined to be that way. Product manager Toshimasa Aoki tells VentureBeat that the company threw out all the rules during the early design phase, and had tested both all-touchscreen gamepads as well as one where a touchpad could move to different locations. The PlayStation team had also considered abandoning its signature bottom-mounted analog sticks in favor of moving them up top, much like Nintendo's Wii U Pro Controller. However, feedback pushed Sony to a more conservative layout -- many early PS4 game developers were worried that a new control scheme would break their software design. While it's unfortunate that Sony had to restrain its creative impulses, we suspect that many gamers are happy with the end result.

The European territories can now ensure that they're able to race on launch day thanks to the addition of a Gran Turismo 6 pre-order option to the PlayStation 3's online store.
Those who pre-order the standard edition of the game will receive a bonus "Precision Pack," which adds five new sports cars to the game. Additionally, they'll be able to choose from one of four other car packs or one million in-game credits. The more expensive Anniversary Edition of the game includes all five car packs and that oversized stack of cash.
Gran Turismo 6 is scheduled to debut on December 6. The game can now be pre-ordered either from your console or by visiting the Gran Turismowebsite.

One million owners of new console result in outages on Sony's network
Users have reported outages on Sony's PlayStation Network in the wake of the US PlayStation 4 launch on Friday, as the million who bought the console logged on to the network to download a day-one update.
Region-wide connection issues have been reported, accompanied by the error message “The network connection has been lost,” numbered NW-31453-6 or NP-3500-8.
Sony put up a warning on PlayStation.com letting customers know about the issues.
“The PlayStation Network is currently experiencing extremely high volume, some gamers may experience some difficulty connecting. We ask for your patience,” read the message.
Sony claims to have sold one million units of the new PlayStation 4 on the first day at retail, and when those customers connected and powered on their console it immediately began downloading the day-one firmware update.
Many of the device's major features require an internet connection and presumably use the PSN servers, so that can't help the situation much either.
The PlayStation 4 will arrive in Europe on November 29th, so hopefully Sony will have some time to bolster its servers to avoid a repeat performance on the other side of the Atlantic.

A number of fixes have been offered by Sony for new PS4 owners whose console has displayed the blinking blue light fault warning.
An info page on the PS4 forums says that the warning can relate to a number of things such as TV compatibility, the console’s power supply or the hard drive. Symptoms include the aforementioned blue light, the console powering off or no a/v output to the TV.
The possible fixes cover a wide range of options such as trying a different power cord and checking the hard drive seating. As well as turning it off and on again.
The internet would have you believe that hardware problems are proving a common occurrence on PS4 but the truth of the situation cannot possibly be ascertained for the time being.
Sony said last week that it was seeing a 0.4 per cent PS4 failure rate – a number that is “within our expectations”.

November 18th, 2013, 23:47 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's vice president of marketing has offered a number of insights into the company's recent PlayStation 4 launch, including his thoughts on the launch line up, stock numbers and extending consumer demand.
"The launch overall, just in business terms, we feel great about it," Jon Koller told GamesBeat.
"The pre-orders are through the roof. The demand is huge. Of the five platform launches we've had, this is the best game line up. It reminds me a lot of the PS2 launch, when we had such pent-up demand - 'When is the PS2 coming?' The same thing is happening here."
He said Sony had ensured "adequate supply" for consumers, but that a strong demand would continue through the festive period.
"When you look at some of our past launches, you could argue about the various points of supply. We had a lot of demand for PS3, and we were short. We didn't want to relive that. It's hard when you don't have a lot of supply. But even so, we have a lot of demand this time around."
He also argued that this launch had the "best game line up" of the company's five platform launches (a sentiment the critics might not agree with) and that he expected the appetite for the new console to stretch further beyond launch.
"We went out at $599 with the PS3. Xbox was out there for a year. They were $100 cheaper at that time when we launched. But still, an expensive proposition. This time around we're at $399. There's much more opportunity, from a spending perspective, for people to be able to come in and buy a couple of games with that," he explained.
"We maybe didn't have that flexibility last time. I think John and other analysts are right. The demand for this will be sustained for a longer period of time at a real high level than we've seen in the past. We see it in a lot of our quantitative modelling - a lot of pent-up demand, a lot of passion to get into this next generation."

November 18th, 2013, 22:55 Posted By: wraggster
Sega's PS3 sci-fi third-person shooter Binary Domain will be free to PlayStation Plus subscribers in North America from November 19.
Sony has confirmed that the title will be added to the US Instant Game Collection as part of this week's US PlayStation Store update.
Binary Domain is the work of Toshihiro Nagoshi, the man behind several major Sega franchises including Daytona USA, Super Monkey Ball and Yakuza.
The game's official blurb reads, "Binary Domain puts players in the middle of a fast paced and intense battle for humanity in a robot-filled 2080 Tokyo. Fighting through the derelict lower levels of the city, players control an international peace-keeping squad that soon starts to question their surroundings and the choices they make."
Also joining the Instant Game Collection this week is Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath for PS Vita - a remake of the 2005 Xbox game from Oddworld Inhabitants.
The Vita version of Sine Mora will be removed from the IGC on November 26, so be sure to download it before then.
Additionally, Worms 2: Armageddon will go on sale exclusively for subscribers for $4.50, down from its regular price $14.99.

November 18th, 2013, 22:50 Posted By: wraggster
Gran Turismo 6 will allow players to boost their in-game credits with real-money purchases, Sony has confirmed.
In a series-first move, a new microtransaction system will let users purchase in-game credits in denominations of 500K, 1 million, 2.5 million or 7 million credits.
Credits are used to purchase cars and performance parts in-game and, as with past GT games, are otherwise earned by winning racing events. Microtransaction purchases are expected to be non-essential and entirely optional.
Pricing was not confirmed in the announcement.
Sony has also announced that Gran Turismo 6 is now available for digital pre-order via the EU PlayStation Store.
Alongside a 'Standard Edition' is a 'Special Edition' version, which includes 20 extra cars (Torque, Performance, Adrenaline and Velocity packs), custom PSN avatars, paint chips, race suits and race helmets.
Placing a pre-order on either version will also get you the Precision Pack, which comes with an additional five cars including a Nissan GT-R, Corvette C7 and an Audi R8 (pictured above).
The pre-orders aren't yet available on the US PS Store, and there's no word on when they will be. The US PS Store, however, updates weekly on Tuesdays.
The PlayStation 3 exclusive introduces new circuits to the series, including Mount Panorama, Ascari, Silverstone and Goodwood, and will feature up to 1200 cars and 100 track layouts.
Gran Turismo 6 will release December 6 exclusively for PS3.

Strategical online fantasy warmongering game Kingdom Under Fire 2 has resurfaced as a PlayStation 4 and PC game, and is due, finally, next year. The PC version will arrive West in the first-half of 2014, and the PS4 version will touch down in mid-to-late 2014. Discussions with PC publishers and Sony, for PS4, are on ongoing, Blueside told me this morning. The native Korean version will arrive on PC in early 2014, as will Southeast Asia versions. Western regions won't be too far behind, in other words.Kingdom Under Fire 2 puts you in charge of a fantasy hero who controls an army and does battle with huge enemy forces using overhead army-ordering tactics and colossal spells, as well as close range hack-and-slash fighting. Think Dynasty Warriors. You can team up with other heroes and their armies to take on enemy hordes, their ranks filled with giant scorpions and rock monsters and powerful villains. There's a video showcasing three-player co-op below. The action appears fluid and meaty, which is impressive, given all that's going on.

Knack, Sony's other first-party launch game, also arrived in 2D."We currently don't have any plans for 3D support, but I'll pass your request along to the team," Guerrilla wrote on Twitter.

ShopTo has issued a public apology after it took money from some PlayStation 4 pre-order customers without warning.Eurogamer was contacted by a number of ShopTo customers who this morning woke to find they had been charged for their PS4, which starts at £349, in full. One customer, "Findus", told Eurogamer ShopTo had sent him into his overdraft."ShopTo claim an email was sent out but as yet I have not received this email just that the amount has been taken," he told Eurogamer."I don't get paid till the end of the week so I have gone into my overdraft because I never had the money ready. So I have had to try and cancel the order to get my money back to get back in the black."ShopTo told Eurogamer it had issued warning emails but because the list of PS4 pre-order customers was so huge, some of these failed to arrive before money was taken."We have sent a ticket to all our customers," ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta told us."Unfortunately due to thousands of pre-orders some tickets took longer than expected to arrive in the inbox. I would like to send a deep apology to the users that have received it late. Unfortunately was out of our control."ShopTo, which is preparing to process its PS4 shipment for delivery to its warehouse at the end of this week, pledged to offer any disgruntled customers a refund."Once again our sincere apologies," Cipolletta added.ShopTo advised customers that if their PS4 pre-order payment failed a second attempt to charge will be made at a later stage.PS4 launches in the UK on Friday 29th November.

Psychedelic platforming adventure Stick it to the Man is slated for a PS3 release on Wednesday, 20th November, developer Zoink! has announced.A Vita version is set to follow in December and since this is a Cross-Buy affair, you get it on both platforms for the price of one.I played about a half hour of Stick it to the Man at E3 where I likened the kooky adventure about a man who can read people's minds and manifest their thoughts as stickers to be something of a spiritual successor to Psychonauts. "Relative to Double Fine's debut, Stick it to the Man doesn't look quite as mechanically varied, but it does capture Schafer and co.'s unbridled lunacy with an extra layer of zonked-out eastern European spirit tossed into the mix," I wrote in my Stick it to the Man preview.

A classic game console freezing problem seems to affect the newest generation too. It has been found out that a bunch of Sony PlayStation 4s suffer of a problem which has been christened 'Blue Light of Death'. When a PS4 is turned on with a press of the power button, the light that runs along the side of the console should first pulse blue and then switch to white. At this point the console turns on the picture signal to the display device. Those who have a unit with the glitch are instead finding that their PS4 pulses blue, never goes to white and never outputs an image. We do not have accurate statistics of how widespread the issue is, but reports are popping up in Amazon reviews, Twitter, YouTube and other websites. PlayStation support is still in midst of investigating the issue, but has already posted a bunch of magic tricks you can try to get the console past the initial startup stage.

Pier Solar HD, the Kickstarted remake of the Sega Genesis RPG Pier Solar, will be coming to the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, Watermelon Games President Tulio Goncalves announced in a Kickstarter update. This is in addition to the previously planned PC, Xbox 360, Wii U, Mac, Android, Linux, Ouya and Dreamcast versions. The initial release of Pier Solar HD has also been delayed and is now planned to launch by March 2014.
In the initial update, Goncalves explained that repeated applications for the consideration of Pier Solar HD on the Xbox 360's Marketplace were not met with a response. After hearing about Microsoft's self-publishing program for the Xbox One, ID@Xbox, Goncalves applied for the program several times.
Although the video update states Microsoft had not responded beyond a request for more information about the project, Watermelon Games has sincecommented on the post to confirm that Microsoft has contacted them. While it's not an outright confirmation that Pier Solar HD will reach either the Xbox 360 or Xbox One, the comment states that it "looks like good news will be coming along!"
