CVG understands that UK PS4 sales outstripped Wii U's lifetime total in a matter of hours following the release of Sony's new console last week.
Retail monitor Chart Track said on Monday morning that PS4 has become the fastest selling console in UK history.
While specific sales figures weren't revealed, retail sources have since claimed Sony moved over 250,000 consoles within 48 hours.
Despite launching one year prior to Xbox One and PS4, Wii U may now been relegated to third place in terms of next-gen UK hardware sales.
In late November, UK Xbox One sales hit 150,000 units in the console's first 48 hours of availability, just a few thousand units short of Wii U's total UK sales since release.
At the end of Nintendo's second fiscal quarter ended September 30, global Wii U hardware sales stood at 3.91 million units.
Sony said PS4 sales hit one million units in the console's first 24 hours of availability following its North American release on November 15.
And worldwide Xbox One sales topped one million units in the 24 hours following its November 22 launch, according to Microsoft.

It has been suggested that PlayStation 4 game streaming service Gaikai is scheduled to launch in North America in the second half of 2014.
According to a Eurogamer source, Gaikai will roll out across North America in the third quarter of 2014 ahead of a European launch the following year.
The site also claims Sony is currently asking some developers to take part in a Gaikai beta scheduled for early 2014.
"We're on track to have a commercial service up and running in the US first within 2014," Andrew House told Eurogamer. "That remains the plan and we're very much on track to reach that.
"But what's important is to understand the full scope of what we're trying to achieve and why we felt the Gaikai acquisition was important. Our goal is to be able to have a new form of game distribution streamed from the server side, initially to PS4 consoles then gradually moving that out to Vita.
"But eventually, the endgame is to have this available on a multitude of network-connected devices, essentially delivering a console-quality gaming experience on devices which are not innately capable of doing that."
When asked if he could comment on the mooted 2015 release date for Europe, House replied: "I really can't be specific on the European rollout. It's a brand new form of delivery.
"We need to prove out the technology, which we feel is good at its core, but we place - as I think is quite right - a real emphasis on delivering a quality experience for consumers. And that will be dependent to a degree on what the strength of broadband connection is going to be, and what our server deployment and infrastructure looks like.
"We're hard at work on all of those fronts, but I'm not at a point right now where I can be specific about when our European fans are going to be able to enjoy that."
Speaking during a roundtable interview at Tokyo Game Show in September, Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said: "We are planning to start serving PS3 games on cloud servers in the States next year for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita - and that means PS Vita TV as well - and expand in regions and content."
Earlier in the year, Gaikai founder Dave Perry said: "What we're creating is the fastest, most powerful gaming network in the world."

Sony has confirmed that five games will be added to the US Instant Game Collection in December, starting with Grid 2 for PS3.
The Codemasters racer will be available to US PlayStation Plus subscribers from Tuesday, December 3, when the weekly PlayStation Store update goes live.
Grid 2 will later be joined by (in no particular order) Gearbox Software's first-person RPG hybrid Borderlands 2 (PS3), psychedelic racer Dyad(PS3), Sega's Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (PS Vita) and dirt bike obstacle game Urban Trial Freestyle (PS Vita).
Instant Game Collection is a list of games made available at no additional cost to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Games downloaded via the popular feature are playable in full and available indefinitely as long as the account holder is a Plus subscriber.

FIFA 14 has emerged as the third-party champion in Gfk Chart-Track’s first PS4 Top Ten.
Sony’s Killzone: Shadow Fall is PS4’s No.1 (with an impressive attach rate, it seems) while FIFA 14 claimed No.2.
However, arguably the biggest battle was between EA’s Battlefield 4 and Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts – and Battlefield scored the headshot.
EA’s game is this week’s No.3 and Activision’s is No.4 – although note that the PS4 version of Ghosts has been on sale since the game arrived on other formats in early November.
Chart-Track noted at the time that it had a strong first week, so could well be the bigger overall seller.
Here’s the PS4 Top Ten:
1. Killzone: Shadow Fall (Sony)
2. FIFA 14 (EA)
3. Battlefield 4 (EA)
4. Call of Duty: Ghosts (Activision)
5. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (Ubisoft)
6. Need for Speed: Rivals (EA)
7. Knack (Sony)
8. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes (Warner Bros)
9. NBA 2K14 (2K Sports)
10. Injustice: Gods Among Us (Warner Bros)

The PS3 and Vita versions of FIFA 14 can currently be had for half price on PSN.
The deals mark the beginning of Sony’s ‘12 Deal of Christmas’ promotion which will run for… well, for 24 days as it happens, on PSN’s PlayStation Store.
Each offer will kick off at 12pm and will run for around two days, offering an average discount of 50 per cent. FIFA 14’s £24.99 PS3 and £19.99 Vita price was introduced yesterday.
PS4 titles will not be included in the promotion.
Films and other media will be included, however – right now Tom Cruise movie Oblivion can be rented for £1.99 in HD or 99p in SD.
The next set of deals will be revealed tomorrow.

PlayStation UK is celebrating record-breaking sales of PS4, and has promised gamers that a 'substantial' amount of stock is now being flown into the UK.
The firm sold just shy of 250,000 consoles in two days last week, significantly more than the previous record holder – PSP – which sold 185,000 units over a four day period.
The sales helped retailers take home £175m in sales last week.
In a statement sent to MCV, Sony has praised retailers, customers and partners for their part in the success, and have promised to fulfil the demand from gamers still waiting for their machines, and even deliver more machines than expected into retail.
"We are delighted by the initial sales of PS4 and are proud to have set new records for a UK console launch," said UK MD Fergal Gara.
"In particular, I want to thank all the gamers who have waited patiently for PS4 and who have come out to support PlayStation. I also want to thank all of our retail and publishing partners who have helped make this possible by delivering huge sales in a very short period of time and great games for PS4.
"Since the initial announcement back in February, pre-orders for PS4 have surpassed all expectations and we continue to work hard to fulfil the remainder of these pre-orders and to deliver additional consoles to the market for the many more gamers who want a PS4. Substantial further volumes of PS4 will arrive in the UK before Christmas."

The PlayStation 4 had the best launch week in the UK of any gaming system to date, and in the words of Chart Track it "eclipsed" the Xbox One's sales from the week before. There's no confirmed numbers, but we know the country's previous fastest-seller is the PSP, and it sold 185,000 units across its debut week in 2005. The long and short: The PS4 done good.
British industry site MCV put the PS4's opening week sales at 250,000, according to its retail sources. MCV also pinned the Xbox One's UK numbers at 150,000, but again that figure is unconfirmed. In any case, the good news is both consoles are enjoying successful launches both in the UK and across the globe; Sony announced 1 million PS4 sales within 24 hours of the console's debut in North America, a figure Microsoft also hit when it launched the Xbox One across 13 markets worldwide.
As for this week's software charts, there's some predictable shuffling with the console launches. Call of Duty: Ghosts drifted back to the top, after FIFA 14 stole ahead last week with the Xbox One Day One bundles. The rest of the top ten is made up by games available across Xbox One and PS4, with the exception ofGrand Theft Auto 5 in seventh, and Batman: Arkham Origins in tenth.
The charts don't read so well for the Wii U, though. The system's standout holiday game, Super Mario 3D World, debuted in 14th place, just behind PS4 launch game Knack in 13th.

PlayStation Europe kicks off its yuletide PSN sale with a Christmas cracker: FIFA 14 for £25 (€35/AU$45) on PS3, and £20 (€25/AU$33) on Vita. They're the first of 24 gaming discounts in the wrongly named 12 Deals of Christmas - which doesn't run across the 12 days of Christmas either.
Instead, the promotion runs from the start of this month through to Christmas Day, with each discount available across 48 hours. That means you have until tomorrow, December 3 to net the FIFA 14 deals.
Messi Christmas, everybody!

EA DICE will release an update for the PlayStation 4 and PC versions ofBattlefield 4 tomorrow, addressing a one-hit kill glitch that has plagued the game since launch, among other fixes and improvements.
The patch will eliminate reported instances of a single bullet dealing damage multiple times upon impact, often resulting in one-hit kills. The PC version will see additional fixes that target audio bugs and screen blurring, while the PS4 patch will enable audio playback in video captures and fix crashes relating to large Friends lists.
The PC patch will deploy at 1:00 a.m. PST on December 3, while the PS4 update will be available "in the afternoon EU time."

PlayStation is holding a Gran Turismo 6 contest for Europe's would-be speed demons. Don't think you'll be able to just waltz on in and snatch a spot in the drawing, though. In order to be entered, you'll have to take a multiple-choice quiz on the history of the Gran Turismo series. There are six questions, and the fastest time wins. You know what that means - no screen-looking Google searching.
Should you be one of the five grand prize winners, you'll receive an official Gran Turismo racing pod, a 40-inch Sony Bravia TV, a Thrustmaster Steering Wheel and racing seat, a PS3 system and a copy of Gran Turismo 6 Anniversary Edition. Ten runners-up will receive a copy of GT6 Anniversary Edition and a PS3 to play it on.
As far as we're aware, you won't be able to do any sick burnouts using the Gran Turismo racing pod. As far as we're aware.

PlayStation 4's Remote Play connection with PS Vita is exciting stuff - a value-added extra with the potential to revitalise the fortunes of Sony's under-performing handheld. Nintendo's Wii U GamePad established the notion of decoupling from your HDTV and playing remotely with excellent image quality and no noticeable lag. Since then, Nvidia's Shield has come along - not quite as impressive right now, but great stuff nonetheless, with a new update coming up soon that promises significant improvements. Call it wishful thinking on our part, but we couldn't help but hope for similarly impressive results from PlayStation 4.All of these streaming gameplay set-ups are based on very similar principles: the current frame is grabbed from memory by a hardware encoder, compressed into h.264 video, beamed over WiFi to the handheld, then decoded and displayed on-screen while control inputs are transmitted back to the host. Wii U accomplishes all of this extremely quickly - we ran the GamePad alongside a PlayStation 3D screen with 33ms display lag, and via we noted absolute parity in the refresh. Nvidia's Shield system offered no direct connection between handheld and PC, but even via a router we noted remarkably swift response - despite a downgraded 30Hz display refresh. Nintendo also took the honours on image quality, with macroblocking artefacting much more noticeable on Shield, mitigated only by the small display. The stakes are high for Sony then. There's a really high expectation level with Vita Remote Play because the core technology has been proven to work on not one, but two different systems. Indeed, Nvidia manages to hand in a highly playable experience despite the lack of a direct hook-up between the PC and the Shield handheld - traffic needs to travel via a router, presenting its own latency implications. That expectation level is raised still further by the upcoming arrival of Vita TV - a screen-less version of the handheld that, in time, will also support PS4 Remote Play (we've got a Japanese unit in-house now and rather annoyingly it's not enabled in the current firmware). Sony's new venture doesn't just need to work on the smaller screen, it needs to scale up for HDTV usage too.So just how good is the new streaming gameplay set-up? Before we kick off with the inevitable PS4 vs. Vita image comparison, we should explain how Remote Play works. As we understand it, the image is downscaled from 1080p to 720p and downscaled again to 960x540 when it's displayed on the Vita screen (leaving a tiny four-pixel black border on the bottom of the screen). Sony's Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the encoding resolution for Vita TV, and we suspect it's the same for the standard handheld too. Bottom line: the no-show of Remote Play on Vita TV means we had to grab the downscaled 960x544 image from the handheld, rather than the preferable 720p feed from its screen-less sibling.
