Sony has said that 4K movie support is "in consideration" for PS4.
This would indicate that PS4 owners will not be able to play existing (albeit a limited selection of) 4K Blu-ray movies on the system when it launches this November.
"Support for high-resolution 4K output for still images and movie content is in consideration," says Sony in an extensive PS4 system FAQ published today.
"But there are no further details to share at this time," it adds. "The PS4 system does not currently support 4K output for games," it goes on to confirm.
4K is a form of 'ultra HD' generally considered to refer to a resolution of 3840 × 2160 - four times the resolution of conventional 'full HD' 1080p TVs (1920 x 1080).
The firm also clarifies that, while the machine is capable of 3D gameplay, none of its launch titles will offer support for stereoscopic 3D.
Read the full PS4 FAQ here. The FAQ touches on everything from the console's processors and technical capabilities, to peripheral and software support, the controller, the launch lineup and the finer details of its operating system.
Sony has confirmed a PS4 launch date of November 15 in US and November 29 in Europe and Latin America.
The final confirmed PS4 launch lineup list is here.

The Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts will run natively at 720p, while the PS4 version will run at a 'full-HD' 1080p.
So confirmed Infinity Ward boss Mark Rubin today, following recent rumours that the Xbox version would be subject to a disadvantage in resolution next to the PS4.
"For Xbox One we're 1080p upscaled from 720p," confirmed Rubin, meaning the game will be output at 1080p (1920 x 1080) thanks to upscaling software, but is running natively at 720p (1280 x 720) at the rendering level.
"We're native 1080p on PS4," he went on to confirm. "We optimized each console to hit 60 FPS and the game looks great on both."
Native resolution is technically superior to upscaling, with the latter typically used as a method of improving performance - i.e. to increase (or stabilise) frame rates by decreasing rendering load spent on resolution.
This comes after it was confirmed that the Xbox One version of Battlefield 4 will also suffer a similar resolution disadvantage next to its PS4 counterpart.
EA's blockbuster shooter will render at 900p (1600 x 900) on PS4 and at 720p on Xbox One, it was established when CVG and several members of the media got their hands on the game at a recent review event.
Battlefield 4 and Call of Duty: Ghosts are among the most highly anticipated of the new consoles' launch lineups. Critics' reviews for Battlefield 4 showed a generally favourable response to DICE's cross-gen shooter, with scores ranging from 7/10 to 95%.
Current-gen and PC versions of Battlefield 4 released on October 29 in the US and hit UK on November 1.
Activision has confirmed a Call of Duty: Ghosts release date of November 5 on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC.
Xbox One and PS4 versions of both games will be system launch titles, released later in November.

There's a good chance you're already well-acquainted with most of the launch titles for the PlayStation 4 by now, but Sony has today made things official and confirmed the complete list of titles that'll be available on day one. That list totals 17 22 retail and download-only games in all (compared to 23 for the Xbox One, ten of which overlap between the two consoles), including five first-party titles, twelve third-party games, and five from indie developers.
Sony does note the list is still subject to change -- we just saw Angry Birds: Star Warsadded to both the PS4 and Xbox One launch line-ups yesterday -- but time is obviously fast running out for any major additions. Also, while this is the launch day line-up, Sony has of course announced a number of other games that are set to roll out by the end of the year or early next year, some of which were pushed back from launch due to delays. You can find the complete launch line-up after the break.
Update: It looks like we spoke a bit too soon. Sony has just added a few more titles to the list, boosting the total to 22. UK gamers can also look forward to two additional games not on the North American list: Escape Plan and Flow.

The [a]list daily looks at winning strategies for Sony in its multi-front battle to be number one in gaming
Sony Computer Entertainment
Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Sony was the undisputed leader of the Big Three Console makers when the PlayStation 2 was the dominant console. That was many years ago, and soon it will be two entire console generations. While Sony and Microsoft had roughly similar numbers for the total consoles sold between the Xbox 360 and the PlaySatation 3, both were handily outpaced by Nintendo's Wii. The Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 in the US for years, despite Sony's best efforts.
The battle is shaping up very differently for the next generation, because it's not just a console battle any more. Sony and Microsoft are competing in a global multiplatform battle for gaming hardware dominance, between consoles (current and next-gen), smartphones, tablets, streaming, VR headsets, and beyond.
Sony starts with some distinct advantages. First, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai understands the game industry very well, since he led Sony Computer Entertainment for many years. Microsoft doesn't even know who its next CEO will be at this point - and that CEO may not feel that games are an important part of Microsoft's future. Second, Sony has 20 years of game creation to draw on, with a solid library of games and deep experience in game making. Third, Sony has large and successful divisions creating music and movies, with an enviable content library in those areas. Finally, Sony is now producing an array of excellent smartphones and tablets that can work well with its overall gaming strategy.
You shouldn't minimize Sony's challenges, though. The company has struggled in recent years through major losses and restructuring, and while the picture is looking better right now this does not leave Sony with the sort of financial reserves enjoyed by Microsoft (with cash in the bank of around $80 billion).

October 31st, 2013, 00:01 Posted By: wraggster
Since stepping down as Electronic Arts CEO, John Riccitiello has been looking at the game business as an investor, and for the most part, he's liked what he's seen. Speaking at the GamesBeat 2013 conference today, Riccitiello said the industry is booming like never before, and with the exception of pay-to-play MMOs, it's a great time to be involved in any segment of the industry, even the much maligned console business.
"We've got a robust free-to-play market. We've got a robust mobile market. They're both going through the roof," Riccitiello said. "But at the same time, we are seeing the early indications of a console resurgence starting two to three weeks from now."
Riccitiello is referring to the November 15 launch of the PlayStation 4, and the November 22 launch of the Xbox One, each of which he expects to outperform its predecessor. Riccitiello referenced EA's expectation that the two systems will ship 10 million systems by March, and noted that far outpaces the 7.7 million the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 managed in their first 14 months on sale combined. He also noted that surveys tracking gamers' playing habits found that the percentage who play their consoles every week has been pretty steady for the past three years, hovering around 30 percent.
"Now I think that's particularly stunning given we're on year eight--or nine depending on how you count it--of a console transition, when we should all expect pretty significant declines," Ricitiello said. "And we're not really seeing that."
Other signs of health included Grand Theft Auto V's 29 million units shipped, as well as recent positive financial reports from big publishers including Take-Two, Ubisoft, and EA. (Riccitiello had especially kind things to say about the management team at his previous employer, saying they have guided it through a transition to digital. It's especially impressive in light of a 2007 "burning platform" meeting the same group of execs held in New York during which they believed EA held roughly the same position in the market as THQ.)
"Right now, all the naysayers that were predicting the demise of the major console players, they're not seeing it," Riccitiello said. "In fact, they're seeing record numbers."
Riccitiello also brought up a common criticism of the console market, that smartphones and tablets are eroding its user base. He pointed to research that when surveyed about their playing habits, heavy tablet gamers have reported "a pretty strong degradation on console." Riccitiello admitted that sounds bad, but offered another way to think about it.
"Ford is having the best year ever on pick-up trucks right now," Riccitiello said. "And if you just studied people that bought Chevy trucks, you would find they're actually not using Ford trucks as much. There's a constant ebb and flow of gamers in and around things. So if you isolate around the heavy users of one [platform], they're quite consistently lesser users of something else."
Finally, Riccitiello turned his attention to the mobile market, expressing his concerns that publishers in mobile are boosting their bottom line today at the expense of building lasting lucrative brands for tomorrow.
"While I think some of the best entrepreneurs I've met are working in the game industry, there's a lot of folks pursuing me-too strategies, virtual copycats," Riccitiello said, adding, "There's blue ocean, there's red ocean, and then there's oceans that are so red that the prior six entries have already failed. Why copy that strategy?"
Riccitiello admitted to being "a little depressed by the lemmings," but stressed that there were a number of people in the field doing innovative, interesting, and different work, including Supercell, Natural Motion, Kixeye, and thatgamecompany.
"It doesn't have to be the bluest of blue oceans," Riccitiello encouraged those building new game companies. "Just a tinge of blue would be nice, a little more towards the purple maybe, as opposed to just straight copies of what's out there."

Ubisoft has no current plans to bring Sony-exclusive Assassin's Creed 4 DLC content to other platforms, despite a specfied six-month exclusivity period.
While promotional material for the DLC points to a six-month timed-exclusive for the PS3 and PS4 DLC content, Ubisoft has confirmed withJoystiq that it won't release for other platforms.
"I can confirm that at the current stage the PS exclusive DLC isn't planned for Xbox 360/Xbox One," a Ubisoft representative said.
The DLC content provides an extra hour to the main story campaign and is centered around Assassin's Creed: Liberation protagonist Aveline.
The confirmation follows reports last week that the DLC was a timed exclusive on Sony platforms. Promotional material stipulated that the content was exclusive to PS3 and PS4 for six months only.
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag has released to positive reviews, with many publications calling it a return to form. In our review, we called it "beautiful, expansive and rewarding".

There's a lot of streaming media apps out there, and there's now two more on the PlayStation 3. On the video side of things, Verizon has brought its Redbox Instantservice to the console, giving you access to thousands of streaming movies for the same $8 a month that Netflix costs (which also nets you four DVD rentals from Redbox kiosks each month). Unlike Netflix, however, you can also choose to buy or rent new release movies without a subscription. The other app making its debut on the console today is the TuneIn radio service, which offers access to some 70,000 radio stations. It'll also be making its way to the PS Vita next week, but there's no word yet on Redbox making a similar transition to Sony's handheld.

EA is extremely bullish on next-gen gaming based on what the publisher has heard from Microsoft, Sony and retailers
Electronic Arts
ea.com
On its earnings call today, the first one led by Andrew Wilson as new EA CEO, EA fielded numerous questions about the impending launches of the next-gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony. The takeaway was clearly that EA is excited and incredibly bullish on the new platforms, not just for itself but for the industry as a whole.
EA COO Peter Moore noted that based on what he's heard from Microsoft and Sony, production has been much smoother and there should be around 10 million units combined on shelves by the end of EA's fiscal year next March. "I can squint and see 10 million units combined... easily," he commented, adding that Microsoft and Sony are "about to engage in a level of spend that is unprecedented in this industry."
Wilson stressed that EA is incredibly well prepared for the console transition this time around, and the company is excited to start next-gen with its five titles at launch. EA will have Madden, FIFA and Battlefield 4 on day one for both Xbox One and PS4, and NBA Live 14 and Need for Speed: Rivals will follow closely afterwards.
"This is my third major transition. We started work earlier than ever before and worked more closely with MS and Sony. These are the best launch games to ever come out of this company," Wilson said, adding that "the foundation we have will ensure that we deliver great games for years to come."
Moore said that all the hard work EA's been putting in means that "We're somewhat inoculated from the bumpiness of console transitions."
Wilson believes that excitement around next-gen really started building in earnest at E3. "We saw an energy around our industry we haven't seen in some time, and it reached a roar by Gamescom," he said.
Beyond the launch window, EA is also very bullish on the prospects for its Respawn-developed shooter, Titanfall. Patrick Soderlund remarked that all the data EA has suggests that the game will be very highly rated when it ships next March, and it should help fuel EA's next-gen sales.
While next-gen is grabbing the attention of media and analysts, it's still important to remember that current-gen consoles will make up a bulk of sales for EA and the industry. Battlefield 4 is off to a good start, EA said, and in fact Moore sees the performance as a positive indicator that the current platforms will continue to perform.
"All of the core elements are in place [on Battlefield 4]. Current-gen seems to be holding up. The pre-orders are up 35 percent on Origin vs Battlefield 3," he noted.

Take-Two touts record $1.27 billion second quarter on strength of Rockstar Games' latest; Borderlands 2 hits 7.5 million shipped
Grand Theft Auto V has already shipped 29 million units worldwide, eclipsing the lifetime performance of Grand Theft Auto IV less than six weeks after it debuted. That's the cleanest takeaway from Take-Two Interactive's second quarter financial results, which the publisher released today for the three months ended September 30.
As is standard, the company released two sets of numbers, one calculated using generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP figures), and then one set of non-GAAP figures excluding the impact of certain factors. Normally, GamesIndustry International reports just the GAAP figures, but Take-Two's GAAP figures for the second quarter don't actually include the impact of Grand Theft Auto V. This is because Take-Two doesn't report the revenue and costs of selling games with "undelivered elements" until the game is completed. Grand Theft Auto V Online, the game's multiplayer component, launched October 1, the day after Take-Two's quarter ended.
On a GAAP basis, Take-Two posted sales of $148.82 million for the quarter, down 45 percent year-over-year. The publisher also posted net losses of $124.12 million, significantly worse than its $12.49 million loss for the year before.
The non-GAAP numbers were significantly better, with Take-Two posting a record $1.27 billion in revenues, up 340 percent year-over-year. And instead of a net loss, the publisher posted a net income of $325.57 million under the non-GAAP figures.
Given the success of Grand Theft Auto V, Take-Two also upped its financial outlook for the rest of its fiscal year. The company is expecting net revenues for the full year to land between $2.20 billion and $2.30 billion on a non-GAAP basis, with a net income per share between $3.50 and $3.75, which would be a record for the company.
In a post-earnings conference call, Take-Two executives also touted the success of its entire line up, not just Rockstar's latest. The company said that Borderlands 2 has now shipped 7.5 million copies and counting, putting it on track to become the best-selling 2K Games release of all time. Additionally, Take-Two stressed that its last four major releases--NBA 2K14, Grand Theft Auto V, BioShock Infinite, and Borderlands 2--have all posted franchise-high units shipped numbers in comparable time frames after release.

Troubled retailer Blockbuster has confirmed that it will not be honouring PS4 or Xbox One pre-orders.
The chain announced its intention to re-enter administrationearlier today.
It has this afternoon been asked a number of times on Twitter about next-gen console pre-orders, to which it has been replying: “We are sorry that you will be disappointed that we can’t fulfil your order for a PS4 or Xbox1.”
It is also telling customers who have already paid for their consoles that they will need to visit the store at which the pre-order was placed for assistance. Those who ordered online are being asked to write a letter to the company’s Uxbridge head office.
If past events with other retailers are anything to go by, however, consumers may sadly be facing the prospect of losing their money. They will of course be able to make a claim with the eventual administrators as a creditor, but this doesn’t guarantee a refund.

via http://wololo.net/2013/10/21/develop...compatibility/
There were 4 undisclosed exploits on Vita’s firmware 2.61, until Japanese developer 173210 kindly released his VHBL port, “reducing” the number to 3 “yet to be revealed” exploits. But we’re back to 4, as 173210 confirmed one of his other psp usermode exploits wasn’t patched yet.
With apparently the help from Qwikrazor87, famous for being involved in pretty much every single VHBL port nowadays, 173210 was able to port VHBL to his exploit fairly quickly.
173210 shared screenshots of his work on twitter, these screenshots being taken on a PSP for now. VHBL exploits are typically found in PSP games and run on the Vita through the PSP emulator.
The typical development process involves doing most of the work on a hacked PSP, and do only the final verifications on a PS Vita.

Renegade Kid is "aiming for Christmas" to launch Mutant Mudds Deluxe on PS3 and Vita, co-founder Jools Watsham recently tweeted. The platformer will be Cross-Buy and Cross-Save compatible, so those that own both systems will only need to purchase one copy of the game to both access it and transfer their save files to the other console.
Mutant Mudds first launched on the 3DS eShop in January 2012, and has players blasting muddy monsters as a boy named Max, a kid armed with a water gun and a jetpack. Watsham also noted that he is currently designing a "secret project" codenamed CGC alongside his work on the Mutant Muddsports and Renegade Kid's Treasurenauts, another platformer that's slated to arrive on the 3DS eShop in December.
