The PlayStation 3 increased its global market share to 31 per cent in the first quarter of the year, up significantly from 18 per cent during the same period the previous year.
That's according to a new report by Strategy Analytics, which notes that for the first quarter the Wii's global market share stood at 49 per cent, and the Xbox 360 a 20 per cent share.
PlayStation 3 sales reached 2.2 million during the quarter, said the report, while Xbox 360 sold 1.5 million and the Wii 3.5 million.
"The PS3 continues to benefit from the price cut last September," noted David Mercer, principal analyst at Strategy Analytics. "This should help the PS3 maintain growth momentum throughout 2010."
The report predicts the PlayStation 3 will sell 14 million units throughout 2010, compared to 17.5 million Wii units and 10.5 million Xbox 360s.
In an interview on the official PlayStation site this week, Sony's European president Andrew House said that dropping the PS3 price last September had propelled sales of the console at retail.
"From a business point of view, I have to say that the stand out moment for me has to be the launch of PS3 slim at 299 euros in September 2009," he said. "We know that for a long time, PS3 was expensive and therefore holding people back. When we launched the slim PS3, sales exploded and haven’t really slowed down since."
Uncertainties for the year include the introduction of Move and Natal, said the report, as well as the extent and pace of declining Wii sales.
Strategy Analytics estimated total home console sales will drop by 9 per cent in 2010, although it suggested Microsoft's Project Natal could help the Xbox 360 pick up towards the end of the year.
"The introduction of the Natal technology should also help re-energise Microsoft’s Xbox 360 platform in the second half of the year," said Mercer.

LittleBigPlanet 2 has been tipped as Sony's next big title on the PlayStation by its European president Andrew House.
While answering questions on the UK PlayStation blog, House was asked, "Which game is going to be the "big one" after GT5?". He responded by talking up the "fantastic line-up" coming out this year with LBP2 exciting him in particular:
"We have just announced LittleBigPlanet 2, which is very exciting. The original game changed the way developers now look at developing games and the things Media Molecule has done with the sequel are truly incredible," he said.
"I can't wait for LBP2 to come out and can promise you that it will be great."
He also emphasised Sony's commitment to continuing work with first party studios like Media Molecule.
"Our acquisition of Media Molecule clearly shows our commitment to our first party studios, to ensure that we continue to offer by far the most compelling, innovative exclusive games," he said.
"Over the years we have done this with developers such as Guerilla Games and Evolution Studios and now with Media Molecule. I think it is clear that we are prepared to invest where there is long-term creative benefit to our platform and our consumers."

Tekken 7 has supposedly been announced by series director Katsuhiro Harada at an event in Madrid.
Harada apparently revealed that the seventh in the series is in production, albeit in the early stages.
Tekken is obviously a well established and long running player in the beat 'em up world, so it's a surprise to noone that it'll continue.
Last year Harada told CVG that there was plenty of life in the genre yet. It looks like he wasn't bluffing.
We'll e-mail Namco Bandai for comment.

Media Vision, the studio behind Chaos Rings and the Wild ARMs series, have big projects in the pipeline. Their upcoming games are so big they’re searching for new planners and programmers.
The actual job listings, found by Game Johou, reveal the project details. First, the title(s) are for PlayStation 3 and PSP. Media Vision is also building these games with international markets in mind. The planner description explains they want to make this project appeal to game users around the world.
Media Vision says to potential recruits this is an ambitious project and will be a long term job.
While Media Vision is no stranger to the PSP (they made the hex-grid strategy RPG Wild Arms XF), this yet to be announced title is their first confirmed PlayStation 3 game.

Acquire, the studio behind quirky games like the Badman series and Patchwork Heroes, have another PSP game in development. Famitsu lifted the curtain on Bakumatsu Revolution, an Edo-era roguelike with four player co-op.
The interesting thing about Bakumatsu Revolution is it’s free. Well, at the least a core part is free. It appears Acquire will sell additional content on the PlayStation Store, but the print in the scans is too eye-straining to get any more details. Definetly curious to see how Bakumatsu Revolution is recieved. A microtransaction-only game made for PSP is a first the publisher and PlayStation Network.
Look for Bakumatsu Revolution on June 25.

UK retailer Play is selling DJ Hero with turntable peripheral for the ludicrously low price of £35.
That's a 65 per cent saving on the recommended retail price of £99.99.
This deal applies to the PS3 version of the game.
DJ Hero was released last October to healthy critical applause - Eurogamer's included. Commercially the game didn't do anything like Guitar Hero sales, but then the starting price was 30 quid higher.
DJ Hero 2 has so far been confirmed by everyone but Activision, although the publisher freely talks about extending the series during investor calls.

Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that it is offering a total of ten free games to new PSPgo users who register their system online after April 1.
The deal includes Sony games Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm Arctic Edge, Wipeout Pure and Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice. Third party titles included in the deal are EA's FIFA 2010 World Cup and Need for Speed Shift, Rockstar's Gran Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines and one other.
The promotion is an extension of previous PSPgo deals that saw Gran Turismo offered free to early adopters and three free games for those original PSP users who upgraded to the digital-only PSPgo.
Sony has never revealed specific hardware sales numbers for the PSPgo, stating only that it was in-line with expectations at launch. The hardware retails for around £200 in the UK.

May 26th, 2010, 20:57 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's European boss Andrew House has said the games have the potential to drive 3D entertainment in the home, and the company will be providing 3D games regardless of high hardware costs for early adopters.
The company revealed this week that Killzone 3 is the latest to get the 3D makeover, and a handful of titles are due to be released this June, including Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Pain and a demo of MotorStorm: Pacific Rift. 3D is also expected to take centre stage at E3 next month.
"3D is a very exciting technology that has the potential to redefine how people consume their entertainment," said House in an interview on the official PlayStation site. "More specifically, games are a perfect fit with 3D and I truly believe that it will be games that will lead the way in consumer understanding of how 3D enhances the entertainment experience."
Although he admitted initial 3D hardware is expensive for consumers, he said it was important for Sony to be there at the start of 3D in the home, in order to offer choice to the early adopters.
"It is important to us that we are always moving forward with new technologies, especially where there is the potential to redefine the entertainment experience.
"As far as 3D is concerned, the potential for 3D gaming is huge and we are only scratching the surface. Of course, as with all new technologies, initially there are barriers to entry, such as the cost of the TVs," he said.
"Regardless of that, we feel that it is our responsibility to offer all consumers a choice. If you want to spend the money on a new 3D TV, then we will provide you with 3D content to play. That is not to say that out priorities have changed. Our priority is still very much our key traditional Blu-ray disc titles, and that does not mean that we can’t offer some 3D fun as well."

2K's announced a Mafia II Collector's Edition and exclusive download content with pre-order purchases.
The Mafia 2 Collector's Edition will feature a brushed metallic SteelBook hard case with debossed logo containing two pieces of Vito and Joe art and free access to two in-game luxury automobiles and two new "made man" suits, including a vintage tux.
Also bundled in the special edition is a 100-page photo album-style art book showcasing the design process of the game, the Mafia II orchestral soundtrack CD and a high quality, tear-resistant map of Empire Bay.
Pre-order DLC will be varied and specific to certain UK retailers, but hasn't been detailed yet.
"The first Mafia title was a critical success, and we are excited to deliver an epic sequel to fans of the game and of Mafia entertainment," said 2k president Christoph Hartmann.
"By offering downloadable content and special editions of Mafia II, we are able to show our appreciation for those guys wise enough to reserve their copies early."
Of course on top of all that you'll be getting the original game itself, which weighs in at 15 hours long.

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus look like they could be coming to PS3 in a reworked Team ICO HD bundle in Q1 next year.
That's according to a report from TheSixthAxis, which confirmed that the pack was coming to PlayStation but that it wouldn't arrive until early next year.
A bit of a wait, then, but Sony does seem to be all about releasing collections of much loved games recently.
It was only last month that we announced the UK release of the God of War Collection. Good times indeed.
The coming of the Team ICO Collection was first hinted at by VG247 earlier today.

Sony will shortly announce a brand new incentive scheme to encourage sales of the digital-only PSPgo, MCV can exclusively reveal.
The offer will entitle anyone who registered their PSPgo after April 1st 2010 to ten full game downloads. Titles in the deal include Gran Turismo, LittleBigPlanet, 2010 FIFA World Cup and Grand Theft Auto.
The deal follows the announcement of a PSP Essentials budget software range that will see several triple-A titles available both on UMD and digitally for just £9.99.
“On PSPgo we’ve decided to innovate with that particular business model,” SCE UK sales director Mark Howsen told MCV. “Next month we’re launching a free ten game offer. And this isn’t just older titles – we’ve worked with third parties and there’s some really good core products.
“We’re using it as a method to drive the hardware as well by making the whole proposition much more appealing.
The new deal follows similar offers last year that included one free download for new PSPgo owners and a further three free downloads for anyone upgrading from an older PSP model.

Nim11 posted this in our PSP Emulation and Homebrew Forum:
i have simplified the "nims psp ebook reader v1.0".
it is an app that allows users to sync and read pdf ebooks in their unmodded psp.
the v1.0 had complex mechanisms of adding books which i have simplified in v1.5.
also, there were few problems in windows vista and 7 in v1.0 which has been corrected.
But i needed to make sure that this version is flawless ,so i came to this forum.
i invite the members of this forum to test it and give feedbacks and suggestions.

Goumba the coder of the Star Wars game SabaccPortable has posted a new release for the PSP, heres what he posted about this release:
Hey guys,
After a year hiatus, I've finally gotten to fix the SourceForge repository and missing code. The source available on SourceForge.Net is now complete and can be built with little (see below), or no modification.
This was my first C++ project, and I was learning as I was going along, so be nice . If you're learning and want to learn how NOT to code, check out the source.
A note, I've been playing with C++0x, and so I was playing with gcc 4.5.0 and this project to test my build. There is some code that may need to be changed when building with the psp toolchain's default (I think its in the 4.3 series). Let me know if you experience any problems with the EBOOT on the site, tell me what you were doing when it happened and I'll look into it.

News/release from slicer4ever
hey guys, i haven't made a release in a long time, but since Elite is calling me an idle dev, figured i'd toss out one of my incomplete projects
i built this a couple weeks ago, thought about turning it into a puzzle game, but then i got my laptop back, and moved back to a different project i'm working on, anywho, it'll simulate gravity's pull between particles, i could get upto ~180 particles being pulled together until i got slowdowns

Jeff lait has released a new version of Powder for consoles,PSP, GBA and Nintendo DS
To understand POWDER, you should first understand roguelikes. "Roguelike" is a term applied to a wide variety of games which share a common inspiration from the game Rogue. A non-exhaustive list of such games would be: ADOM, Nethack, Crawl, Diablo (I & II), Moria, and Angband. My apologies to the many excellent roguelikes I didn't list. What characterizes these games? The exact specifications are a matter of debate - indeed, I may receive hate mail for including Diablo - but I shall try to write a few:
Tactical play. The unit of action is based on the individual adventurer. The game is not twitch oriented (like Quake, rewarding reflexes & well trained actions) nor is it strategy oriented (like Civilizations or Warcraft, requiring working on the large picture)
Based in Hack and Slash. A roguelike isn't primarily about plot development or telling a story. It is about killing things and acquiring treasure.
Random games. A roguelike is a dungeon crawler where no two games are the same. The maps are different, the items are different, there are no guaranteed win paths.
Permadeath. You die, that is it. No restoring a savegame. Good roguelikes delete your save game after loading them. This is compensated by the replayability of the game.
Complex interactions of properties. While the commands for a roguelike are simple, the potential interactions are not. My favourite example is equipping a silver ring as a weapon in order to damage a creature vulnerable to silver, but not one's other weapons. [Editor: This matches the Hack branch of the roguelike tree, not the Angband branch]
Steam rolling monsters. If a critter is in your way, and weak, you shouldn't even notice it is there.
Due to my temporary subversion server being behind my firewall, I had to change the Linux and Mac build machines. I think the Mac build is safe, but if you have issues with the Linux build please let me know. Because if you don't, I'll just retire the offsite machine.
The 10x10 and 12x12 tiles are now enabled on the non-iPhone versions. I'm pretty happy with the 10x10 now, but the 12x12 still need lots of touch up. For those wondering why I did 10x10 first: I've found portrait mode is the way to play.
iPhone users will also be happy that the native keyboard is used. Hardcore POWDER fans will lament that I didn't instead revert to the original GBA keyboard input method. Would be a good excuse for multitouch as you try to chord four virtual buttons plus an direction arrow :>
Help menus are no longer off by one. (Patrick Don't have one, Matt_S, Sam Spencer, Alex Marsh, Robert Barber, mattock)
Remove potential crash when zapping wand of invisibility off map.
Items are no longer revealed by hostiles searching.
Status message "Searched" when you search to make it more clear you did something by searching.
Correct lighting tests for giant mobs along with looser LOS requirements to see them.
No longer crash if a rolling boulder kills the caster and then fills a hole.
You can click-drag on display text to scroll it.
Chris Lomaka's tiles have been updated with some nice new additional icons.
Help menus are platform specific, so GBA users should no longer be taunted with stylus help, etc.
The Akoi Meexx 10x10 and 12x12 tilesets are enabled in SDL builds. The 10x10 has had a round of manual smoothing applied to it.
Status bar on iPhone now rotates and is hidden in landscape mode.
iPhone now uses native keyboard controls.
If you start the game in a room with only secret exits, you are explicitly told that there are secret exits to search for. (Eisel Mazard)
