The prediction is in line with a Nov. 2 Merrill Lynch report that estimates the PS3 hardware to cost $495 to manufacture.
Sony has yet to make an official announcement on price or the release date of the Playstation 3 successor.
The system was a no-show at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and the company has backed away from its spring 2006 release date on press releases.
A $499 price point would be an all-time high for the Playstation brand, which has sold at launch for $299 since its debut in 1995.
The culprit for the pricey hardware lies in the PS3's complex CELL processor and its Blu-ray Disc drive that will play high-definition media.
The $499 is not the only price point that analysts and developers suggest. Several say that the cost could reach $600-$700, while others believe that the electronics giant will match the Xbox 360's premium price of $399.
Historically, Sony has sold its hardware at a loss to recoup on software and accessory sales that offer a higher premium.
Prior to the Playstation 2 launch, analysts suggested that the system may sell for as high as $500. Sony surprised press and analysts with a $299 price tag at an annual video games convention.
Sony may be willing to take a substantial loss to push the Playstation brand and its Blu-ray Disc media, which is in competition against Toshiba's HD DVD high-definition format.
Blu-ray Disc has enough backers to become the market's next de factor disc format for multimedia and is an important strategy to fuel Sony's music, movie, and gaming divisions.
Rival Microsoft said it will offer an external HD DVD drive to Xbox 360 owners sometime in 2006.

Our Friends at SuccessHK have posted a review of Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max, heres the full review:

<blockquote>Street Fighter Alpha 3 is widely regarded as one of the best 2D fighting games of all time. It's still a blast to play today -- with loads of fighters, great gameplay, and a ton of modes. A pared-down GBA port kept the fundamentals, but leave it to the PSP to bring back all that made the console versions great, plus much more.
This baby's got it all. Start with the roster, which is arguably the best in the genre. All your old Street Fighter favorites return -- you've got Alpha exclusives like Rose and Adon, while four new butt-kickers on the block show up. The SFA rookies aren't the most dynamic lot, but adding to such a powerful cast is never a bad thing.
Alpha 3 MAX has almost as many modes as characters. World Tour mode is an amazing single-player experience, adding RPG elements to your fighting. Then there's good ol' arcade, several combinations of two-on-one bouts, and a tag mode for up to three-on-three. Putting a twist on Survival, Vs. 100 Kumite has you brawling with 100 fighters in a row; but instead of ending when you lose, the train keeps on rolling until you've fought all 100. Don't worry, you'll still be able to play the beloved Survival against multiple opponents simultaneously -- it's still one of the best modes in the game.
Ad-hoc multiplayer supports almost every single game type, and is a definite boon to SFA 3 MAX's enjoyment. It's a shame Capcom didn't include Internet support on top of it. Playing against players all over the world -- like the Xbox Street Fighter Anniversary -- would've made things that much sweeter.
In terms of graphics and sound, this game does right by the PSP. The character sprites are so much smoother than other versions, with bright and vivid backgrounds. Street Fighter Alpha 3 looks as good as 2D can. The music sounds great, as does the announcer and fighter voices. Neither audio nor graphics push the PSP to its limits, but it's an aesthetically pleasing title to be sure. The only thing missing is a replay of the closing moments of a fight -- something Capcom has neglected to include for some time.
Street Fighter Alpha 3 allows you to pick an -ism to cater to your particular style. X-ism is n00b-friendly; A-ism is middle road; V-isms are for those creative enough to craft custom combos. All the intricacies of gameplay are here -- guard breaks, throw escapes, air blocks, etc. This portable port doesn't skimp on any of the action.
So far so good, right? You may be wondering why the score isn't higher. Though it isn't necessarily the game's fault, Alpha 3 MAX just doesn't control as well as it should. The PSP's d-pad is not made for fighting-game inputs, which leads to much frustration. You can use the analog nub, but that's no satisfactory solution, either. Capcom even lets you map any type of attack -- super combos included -- to any button, but that's the definition of cheap play. There's simply no perfect way to control things. With such a tight fighting system and the need to be in the zone, gameplay-wise, this is a huge hindrance to your enjoyment.
In Japan (and directly through Capcom's site), players can get a d-pad add-on for the PSP, but this causes more harm than good -- it's nigh-impossible to remove and voids your warranty.
In all other ways besides control, Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX is a 2D fight fan's dream come true. It's more than worth the struggle with the d-pad, as there's so much to love and immerse yourself in with this game. It's packed with fighters, modes, and phenomenal fighting, and will enjoy a long reign as the top fighter for PSP. If only it got along better with our thumbs...</blockquote>

We've gathered some screenshots for LocoRoco, which Sony has announced will hit PSP this summer.
A joyfully simple game, you're responsible for guiding grinning, jelly-like blobs - the LocoRoco - through snowy mountain peaks and moist jungles, while avoiding anything sharp and pokey.
LocoRoco uses PSP's shoulder buttons to tilt the levels and roll the blobby characters through the environments. By gobbling fruit scattered around the levels your LocoRoco will balloon in size - but bumping into nasties and spikes shrinks the wobbling mass. You can also break them into lots of little LocoRocos to squeeze through tight spaces, like in our images.
It's possibly the most beautifully absurd idea since Katamari Damacy, and we can't wait to give this enchanting oddity a hands-on test.
LocoRoco will be released for PSP this summer

Lightgun for Plasma TV. Lightgun for 100 Hz Television. Lightgun for LCD screen. Lightgun for VGA monitor. Lightgun for DLP projector TV. Lightgun for HDTV... If one of these was either on your Santa wish-list or in your recent Internet searches, you've been waiting long enough for this! The LCD TopGun for Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PC is coming to the rescue as it fits with just all the needs described above, running on any screen or television set you can imagine, old or new. Hell, it even is supposed to work with a retroprojector or with the upcoming SED technology from Toshiba! Presented for the first time to us at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair last Christmas, the LCD TopGun finally came out two weeks ago. The bad boy is selling like hot cakes ever since, and in between intensive shipping sessions, we also took the time to test it out with various screens and configurations. That's right, it's been two weeks we got paid to shoot zombies with an attitude, while listening to pumpin' 'n' pimpin' gansgta rap music real loud... "Lik Sang Clan ain't nothin' to f#@k with!"
The LCD TopGun is changing hands for US$ 34.95 only, quantity discounts are available for quantity purchases. We suggest getting an extra controller extension cord while you are it, to make sure you have the necessary comfort when playing from the recommended distance. We have stock of such cables for very low prices on both PlayStation 2 and Xbox.

In related news, it's the entire upcoming products line-up of Datel that has been unveiled recently. A few product names sounded quite more appealing than the others, as you can read from the short-list we compiled hereafter:
4GB SOLUS Pack for Sony PSP
Apparently the 4GB Hard Drive without the X2 Battery Pack
Blue Lazer Extreme for Xbox 360
2.5 hard drive bay with customized blue-laser design
Max Media Dock for Sony PSP
Light version of the 4GB Hard Drive, sans the built-in hdd. Converter allowing you to connect Micro Drives and Compact Flash Cards, similar to the so-called "Neo" stuff

The guys over at Optixx have released a few updates to their version of the Media Player for the PSP, heres the info:
Moved my network code to the M4g3 version. Also added configfile support so that you are able to make your WIFI settings via the configfile pmp.ini. Since i had to move the main thread to userspace the HOME button isn’t working, so you have to use TRIANGLE to quit the player.
Also this
Made a binary release of the network enabled PMP Mod M4g3 media player. Since i don’t use Windows i can’t deliver an windows tested pmp server script.
Some Tips and Tricks:
Use an static ip address
Double check your PSP WIFI Setug
Choose which WIFI Setup to use and the edit con flag in pmp.ini, which is an index to your WIFI Setup, so first WIFI config implies con=0;
Check your remote server script with wget or curl
http://localhost:3333/open?filename=movie.avi&flags=O_RDONLY"Enable the debug flag in pmp.ini
Stay close to your Access Point if you Test for the first time.

<blockquote>What do we need to know about new PSP release Street Fighter Alpha 3 MAX (otherwise known as Street Fighter Zero 3: Double Upper in Japan)? The port's pixel-perfect, ad hoc multiplayer is great (despite the lack of infrastructure support), stretched widescreen is serviceable (though the "letterbox" version might better suit 2D purists), and the controls are wonky (even with the sticky D-pad cover that came with pre-orders). Other than that, SFA3M is the epitome of 2D fighting games, a decent title (metascore: currently 80 out of 100) which will probably appeal to fans more than the critics. Here are some review highlights:
GamePro (4.0/5): "Yes, the game is essentially a port of a decade old fighter and it can be hard as hell, but all the horsepower the PSP brings to the table can't keep this game from being at times mind-numbing frustrating when it comes to control. Put simply, the D-pad the PSP has just isn't cut out to be used for a fighting game, where fast fingers and accurate directional control is paramount."
GameSpy (3.5/5): "Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max is one of the best-made games you can get on your PSP, far better than a simple port of an arcade game, yet hindered quite significantly by the handheld's design flaws."
GameSpot (8.2/10): "Capcom created limited supplies of an adhesive D pad attachment, which gives your thumb more leverage and simply makes special moves easier to pull off. Diehard fans of this game and Capcom's first PSP fighter, Darkstalkers Chronicle, should seek this new D pad attachment out. For most everyone else, it's really not that bad tolerating the PSP controls with this game. But since it's such an exact translation of the original, you can't help but wish for perfectly precise controls to go with it."
For Fighter fans who need an Alpha fix on the console homefront, Street Fighter Alpha Anthology may be just the thing for PS2 owners who can wait till summer (unless, of course, they already own an Alpha iteration for the PS1). If no online play is included in that version, however, Capcom should pull things together and release the SF "prequel" to the XBL Arcade service once Hyper Fighting finds an audience on Live.</blockquote>

LauriN has released a Golf game for the PSP, heres the info:
<blockquote>Inspired by the funny Linux game Kolf, PSPGolf is a minigolf game completely rewritten in Lua for the PSP. The "maps" can be drawn in any MS-Paint-like program, which supports the PNG-format and all the "bouncing" from the walls, slowdown in sand, water is calculated "on the fly" while playing. Therefore there is no need for a tile-based editor, because the ability of "painting" maps is much more flexible. Please note, that this is the initial release, and therefore it looks quite "cheap", so stay tuned for the next releases!
Current features:
1 player mode
Basic elements (walls, water, sand)
Ability of choosing from different "Map Packs"
1 "Map Pack" with 10 maps in the initial release
Planned features:
More "Map Packs"
Ability of saving highscore
Additional standalone version
2 player mode
maybe "n player" mode
maybe WiFi mode</blockquote>

It's been a long time coming for North American fans of Final Fantasy, but the countdown can officially begin--home versions of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is coming to the US on April 25. The computer animated film based on the Square Enix franchise was previously released in theaters and on UMD and DVD in Japan, where it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies. The 101-minute film was directed by Tetsuya Nomura and Tekeshi Nozue and written by Kazushige Nojima.
The stars of the movie's English-language cast were also revealed today. Steve Burton, who gamers may know as the voice of Cloud Strife in the Kingdom Hearts games, was a lock to reprise the role of Cloud for the movie, but two Hollywood starlets will also become very familiar to FF fans soon. Rachael Leigh Cook (Josie and the Pussycats, She's All That) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty, Six Feet Under) will voice Tifa and Aerith, respectively, in both Advent Children and the upcoming PlayStation 2 game Kingdom Hearts II.
Those who can't decide between the DVD and the PSP-friendly UMD formats may want to opt for the DVD version. The 2-disc set features a bonus DVD with a story digest, deleted scenes, a "making of" featurette, and footage from the film's debut at the 2004 Venice Film Festival, as well as peeks of upcoming Final Fantasy VII-based games.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is rated PG-13 and will retail for $26.96.
