Downloadable battlefields for shooter begin PS2-ward march in March; packs will cost $6 and fit on PSP memory stick, USB storage.
"Online downloadable content" is a phrase that often only applies to handheld, PC, and Xbox owners. News out of Sony today, however, may have PlayStation 2 owners dusting off their PS2 Network adapters.
New downloadable map packs for SOCOM 3 will be available this year, with the first scheduled for release sometime in March. Gamers will be able to log into their SOCOM 3 accounts and purchase the add-ons for $5.99. Using a compatible USB storage device or a PlayStation Portable equipped with a Memory Stick Duo (minimum 32MB capacity), purchasers can take their downloaded content anywhere. Those with the PS2 40GB internal drive will also be able to download the map packs.
The first bunch will include several maps that should be familiar to those who played SOCOM II, such as new versions of After Hours, Last Bastion, and Liberation. This will mark the first time that the maps will be playable without the internal hard drive, and each battleground has been reworked with new features for SOCOM 3. Subsequent packs will be distributed "over the next several months" and feature reworked maps from the original SOCOM, as well as all-new levels.

More on the Nand Flash in PSP: Source Gamespot
Source: Taiwanese computer-trade news Web site Digitimes.com.
The official story: "At this time we have made no new announcements regarding the PSP system."--Sony rep.
What we heard: Even though it was supposedly a holiday stateside, a lot of news went down on February 20. News like a report out of Taiwan saying that Sony is preparing a version of its PSP with a whopping 8GB of built-in flash memory.
"According to market sources, Sony plans to release a version of its PSP (PlayStation Portable) using NAND flash from Samsung Electronics in the second half of this year," read the article. "Although recent reports stated that Sony would opt not to use NAND flash in the next version of its PSP, and would instead use a microdrive, the sources indicated that Sony was stalling to negotiate better pricing from Samsung."
To Sony fans, a PSP with 8GB of flash sounds almost too sexy to bear. Besides being able to play games and UMD movies, the device would be able to store twice the audio files of a 4GB iPod Nano. Furthermore, an 8GB PSP would let owners pack a large amount of video content onto the device. That capability could potentially boost Sony's Connect download service, which will offer PSP-optimized video content and games when it relaunches next month.
However, there are two big reasons why Sony wouldn't want to release an 8GB PSP. The first reason is piracy. Already, tech-savvy owners of the handheld are finding ways to rip multiple DVDs onto PSPs equipped with 1GB and 2GB Memory Stick Duos. The trend has been cited as a factor in declining sales of movies released on Sony's proprietary UMD format, which the PSP plays.
The second obstacle to an 8GB PSP is price. Currently 4GB flash-memory modules, which are used for data storage for items such as digital cameras, go for around $150. Using that price as a yardstick, an 8GB PSP would cost at least $550--way out of most gamers' budgets. "An 8GB microdrive seems like a possibility, but that's still some mad coin," said GameSpot Hardware editor Sarju Shah. "8GB anything is going to add a substantial dollar value to the end price."
One theory is that the Digitimes.com article's reference to "8GB of NAND flash" is a typo. It would be more plausible that Sony would release a PSP with 8Gbits, or 1GB, of memory built in. Besides limiting the PSP's storage capability--and therefore its capacity for piracy--it would keep the device's cost low. The $299 PSP Giga Pack, which bundled a PSP with a 1GB Memory Stick Duo, was so popular over the holidays that it sold out at many locations.
However, there is also the competition factor. Sony has looked on with envy as Apple's wildly popular iTunes service has become the standard for audio and video downloads. It would take a bold move for Sony to steal a sizable slice of Apple's 70-80 percent share of the digital music market. And an 8GB PSP would be a bold move indeed.
Bogus or not bogus?: Hopefully not bogus, but we're not getting our hopes up.

According to market sources, Sony plans to release a version of its PSP (PlayStation Portable) using NAND flash from Samsung Electronics in the second half of this year.
The PSP will feature 8GB of NAND flash, the sources stated.
Although recent reports stated that Sony would opt not to use NAND flash in the next version of its PSP, and would instead use a microdrive, the sources indicated that Sony was stalling to negotiate better pricing from Samsung.
When rumors circulated on February 16 that negotiations had broken down between Sony and Samsung, spot prices for 1Gbit and 2Gbit NAND flash dropped 5.3% and 3% in one day, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN).
Deutsche Bank was also cited by the report as commenting that the failure of Samsung and Sony to reach a supply agreement will suppress NAND flash prices further and push oversupply to 10% this year.
According to data from DRAMeXchange, 8Gbit spot prices have fallen from US$39 to US$34 since Chinese New Year, while prices for 4Gbit parts have fallen from US$23.36 to US$16.60

On visiting many PSP sites i keep noticing some ads that really do harm to the Homebrew Scene and worst of all most sites will struggle to do anything against them, the ads in question are those ones that offer PSP Download Services or Guides to Downgrading or even an App that has Emulators with Roms in.
It seems that Google being the almighty power it is cant control the advertisers that use its service, the amount of Rom ads and especially those PSP Download Services ads (although some lesser sites actually have those ads direct and not via Google.) do major harm to the PSP Scene, if they are allowing downloading of ISOs and Movies etc then they deserve to be shut down. If they are enticing you to pay for homebrew then you are being ripped off majorly. Any site that openly supports these paying serviices might as well be a warez site.
Isnt it about time Google sorted their act out

Sony Computer Entertainment Asia's Tetsuhiko Yasuda--the very same one who said not only was Microsoft not a competitor but a potential development partner--discussed a planned download service for the PS3. In an interview with the Japanese gaming site GameWatch during the Taipei Games Show, Yasuda said the download service will "combat the widespread pirating of Playstation games in certain regions of Asia."
We anticipate a similar service from Microsoft. The distribution would be cheaper, the games possibly cheaper, and the profits higher; however, Sony will have to counter the same shortcomings as the Xbox 360. The PS3 will need a large hard drive, and the cost of repeated downloads could erode a slim profit margin to nothing.

News from Lik Sang
It's a great week for PlayStation2 users and shooter fans alike, as there are two very worthwhile games coming up. Ibara is a collaboration of Taito and 2D-Shooter expert Cave comes dressed in an unique 19th century steam design, while SEGA is bound to release something extra special with their Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 25 Gunstar Heroes (Treasure Box), bundling three of the greatest Jump'n Shoot titles together in one fine package. Gunstar Heroes (Treasure Box) is fresh and just released yesterday evening, while Ibara is expected to be delivered to our warehouse within the next 24-48 hours. Preorders are getting cleared as fast as possible, new purchases are welcome.
Ibara - Classic 2D-Shooter Glory
Prepare yourself for a massive sprites attack in Ibara, a challenging old-school vertical shooter, developed by Cave (responsible for e.g. DoDonPachi and Yanya Caballista in the past). The explosion count is very high indeed and the pace of the game can be called turbo-charged, still what really makes this title stand out is its unique design, from small ships to sinister airborne bosses. Ibara's style creates a somewhat Steampunk-oriented world, where machines don't seem to fall into a high-tech category, but appear to be imbued with magical powers instead. Sort of enchanted technology, very cool to look at. Thus, a northern European country called "Edelweiss" was chosen to be the setting for Ibara, during the industrial revolution of the 19th century. Gameplay will reminisce shmup-veterans of highlights like Raiden or Shikigami no Shiro for sure.

Taito revealed a couple of days ago, that they will include an "Explosive Capture Collection" mini-booklet for Japanese gamers that pre-order Ibara. Apparently, it will include hi-res artwork and screen captures of every stage in the game as well as images at the main character on 16 full-color pages. While we can't guarantee that we'll be able to receive this bonus for all of our customers, we'll certainly do our best to obtain as many as humanly possible.
The PS2 port contains various arrangements compared to the Arcade original. In Arcade mode (straight to PS2), two player participation in each of the six stages is possible and two different main weapons are at your disposal, as well as seven options to use your arsenal. Arrange mode (PS2 exclusive) allows you to carry out a power shot, if the shooting button doesn't get used for a while, optional weapons can be changed in real time, as well as the plane's speed can be freely adjusted. Select bosses and stages individually to improve your skills in Practice mode, while Ranking lets you review your scores and rank and the Gallery mode offers illustrations and more. Pilot your plane through a storm of outright bullet-death and prove you can take on all merciless enemies of the Royal Special Forces in order to save your country from this peril. Taito and Cave definitely succeed in delivering high-speed, non-stop shooting action deluxe, wrapped in a sweet package of classic sprite-based design.
Treasure Games Box: Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and Alien Soldier
In the Sega Ages series of classic videogames remakes, SEGA has just included Treasure highlights Gunstar Heroes, Dynamite Headdy and Alien Soldier into one explosive package of gameplay goodness. Here, not just the original Japanese versions can be found, but the overseas editions as well, including digital English instruction manuals. Then, on top of this, not only the Genesis and Mega Drive versions of Gunstar Heroes are offered, but the Game Gear incarnation (basically a port of the Genesis original) also. Sit down, fire up your PS2 and slap Sega Ages Vol. 25 right in there to enter instant 16-bit bliss. Revisit these gems of the videogame past or (if new to them) learn what's so special about Treasure's history and the games that built the foundation of this Japanese multiplayer's fame. Herebelow is the gist of what each of the three games are about.
Gunstar Heroes
One of the greatest shooter titles from any generation, Gunstar Heroes set new standards for the genre with its incredible visuals and intense level of action. Sporting an adaptable weapon system, it offered some of the most amazing boss encounters of that time period. Art style and technological achievement let it stand out easily when compared to other titles released back in 1993. Gunstar Heroes is basically a horizontal Action Shooter, where two players can have a go simultaneously. Enemies, explosions and mechanical monstrosities fill the screen, and a fantastic soundtrack drives you ever on, while you blast everything in your way.
Dynamite Headdy
Released one year later in 1994, Dynamite Headdy is sort of a horizontally scrolling action platformer, gravitating to the comical side of things. There are lots of different puzzle elements included, which add to the outright fun of running around as a robotic ant shooting enemies with its detachable head. Graphics are smooth and colorful, but it's the weird humor that makes Dynamite Headdy so enjoyable. With its whacky style, lots of cool head upgrades and many surprises, this title is a must-have for fans of Jump'n Shoot games.
Alien Soldier
1995 saw the birth of Alien Soldier, another fantastic side-scrolling Jump'n Shoot title. Set in a Sci-Fi background, you pick from six different weapons and wage war on a string of bosses throughout the game. Gameplay-wise it's once more a title worthy of the Treasure stamp of perfect production value, as visuals, sound and pure atmospheric sprite-slaughter make for a truly remarkable gaming experience. Run-n-Gun your way, relying on cool teleport and jump special moves. Alien Soldier rounds this superb collection up good. Remember the Japanese start screen? Hilarious Japlish ("VISUALSHOCK! SPEEDSHOCK! SOUNDSHOCK!") greeted you, before you entered one of the most authentic titles of its age and genre.
SEGA has taken care to even slightly improve the visuals of the included games in this edition, doing away with flickering, by letting you choose to turn the original flicker on or off. A replay feature was also added, that allows you to save play sessions to memory card and view them again later. Nice also the new "super play" data, where you can watch advanced players clear Gunstar Heroes on hard and expert modes without continues and Alien Soldier on super hard mode in 12 minutes and 42 seconds play time. Gallery mode has 100 pages worth of illustrations and the paper manual offers commentary from Treasure's Mr. Maegawa, along with exclusive artwork of Alien Soldier. Sega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 25 Gunstar Heroes (Treasure Box) certainly is a work of love. Make sure not to miss this incredible collection, delivering countless hours of action game enjoyment.

Koei's Samurai Warriors: State of War for the PSP will be arriving in stores March 7. The game will feature 19 playable samurai and ninja characters, Wi-Fi support for up to four players, and the introduction of sub-lords--feudal sidekicks who fight alongside your main character and boost your stats.
Last year's PSP port of Dynasty Warriors received mediocre reviews (Metacritic score: 62) due to its bland environments, frame rate slowdowns, and repetitive combat. However, Koei claims to have fixed the frame rate problem for State of War and has removed the right map bar used in Dynasty Warriors, so that combat mode uses the PSP's full screen width. Any takers?

Across the United States, most Americans were relaxing this Monday, courtesy of the long Presidents' Day holiday weekend. Not so across the Pacific in the corporate offices of Sony. The electronics and entertainment giant saw its stock price sink 3.6 percent, dropping to 5,300 yen ($45) per share. The fall affected the entire Tokyo stock market, with the Nikkei index dropping 1.75 percent to 15,437.93 yen ($130.57).
Monday's drop follows a 2.8 percent decline in Sony stock on Friday, after Wall Street stock-brokerage firm Merrill Lynch published a report skeptical of the company's next-generation console plans. It predicted the launch of the PlayStation 3 console could be delayed by 6 to 12 months from its current spring 2006 window, resulting in an autumn launch in Japan and a late 2006 or early 2007 launch in the US.
"We wrote last November that Sony’s design choices for the PS3 had resulted in an expensive and difficult-to-manufacture product," read the report, "and we think that we’re seeing the consequences of those choices play out now. In particular, we think the problem points are the Sony Cell processor and the Blu-ray drive." Merrill Lynch also cited heat-generation issues with PS3 hardware and the far-from-finished state of most games for the platform as factors.
While other analysts have predicted that the PS3 might not hit North America until Q4 2006 or Q1 2007--which would miss the all-important holiday shopping season--Merrill Lynch's stature made many-a-trader skittish. The fires of unease were fueled further by another component of the report, which predicted the manufacturing cost of the console could be much higher than previous estimates of around $500 per unit.
"Our updated analysis indicates that the initial bill of [production] materials for PS3 could approach $900," read the report. The report said that the production cost of a single Cell processor will be $230 at launch, with the Blu-ray drive setting Sony back $350 per unit. If that estimate is correct, that means the PS3 would have to sell for around $775-$800 to maintain a $125-$100 per-unit-loss similar to that of Microsoft's Xbox 360.
Merrill Lynch expects PS3 production costs will start falling after 2007, when Sony can shift the Cell chip's manufacture from the complex 90nm process to the more cost-effective 65mn process. Scaling Blu-ray to other devices will also bring down the drive's price. Merrill Lynch predicts that the PS3's production cost will fall to $320 in the three years after its launch, by which time the Cell will only cost $60 per unit and the Blu-ray drive $100 per unit.
In the wake of the report, Sony issued a series of contradictory statements. In Japan, Sony Computer Entertainment spokesman Kei Sakaguchi flatly denied that there would be any delay to Bloomberg News and other press outlets, saying, "there isn't any change in our plan to release the console in spring 2006."
However, a Sony Computer Entertainment America spokeswoman was more cautious when she spoke with USA Today. "We're aiming for spring, but we haven't announced specific regions," she told the daily broadsheet. "We're waiting for [final PS3 specifications] until the last possible minute, but the launch could be pushed back if they're not decided soon."

Blue2k has updated his website recently with several news items about his Shell for the PSP, heres the info:
Artillery: Live Fire! now supports ANY size of mp3, it will continue to the next song and it will read from the default mp3 directory as well as the MbShell mp3 directory!
After a long day of work I've ported the lower audio layers of Artillery to C++, and with that I've added the functions named above. It now streams the mp3's from the memorystick, allowing unlimited filesize. It's not finished yet, it sometimes 'jumps' a bit, but you can only hear it using the earplugs.
It will now read MP3's from the default directory too: "ms0:/psp/music". Do make sure that directory exists before launching the mp3 player, even if you have no mp3's there. it will also jump to the next file when the current song has ended.

PSPHax0r9 has released a mod based on the game Pang that was released recently, heres the details:
Well here it goes.
This is my first homebrew. I have been working on it for a long time, and I have changed just about everyhting. Keep in mind that this is release 0.1. This is made from the game Pang! by PSXdev. I have been wanting to release something to the commuity for a while, but having almost no coding skills, I felt like there was nothing I could do. So i have made Bubble Trouble for the PSP, v0.1 as my way to give back. If you like it; great, play it. If not; that's fine, just please don't flame. I have worked hard on this.

New Commercial PSP Game released, heres the info:

Just in time for the Japanese release of the Initial D movie, Sega has a PSP version of its hit arcade racer Initial D Arcade Stage. Initial D Street Stage will be based off Version 3 of the arcade game, giving it some gameplay bonuses over Sega's successful PS2 version. Street Stage has all the characters, cars and tracks from Version 3 of the arcade game, and then some. In addition to wireless ad-hoc play, the game will include a new card element. Following each battle, you earn a card. Cards come in three flavors: rival, battle and tuning. The rival and battle cards are just for show, giving details, respectively, on the characters and classic battles from the series. The tuning cards, however, contribute to gameplay, as you can combine these to customize your car. In all, Street Stage will feature over 200 cards to collect.

Yoyofr posted this news:
Here's a small update about the upcoming s9xTYL 0.4. As you already know, sound emulation will be put media engine and it's closed to be ready. But there will be another new feature.... If interested, check this video. Quality is bad since I made it with a small webcam, but the game is really 60fps ;-)
He also added with this news about his Snes emulator for the PSP:
it's not been decided yet. Perhaps we'll put an option so that the server can send the rom to the client...
right now it's 2 players only, mainly because I have 'only' 2 PSPs... But I plan to add code for 5 players (bomberman rules!). I hope the adhoc network will be fast enough (it should be since it's lan).
later I'll try again internet multiplayer but my first tries weren't very good => internet & wifi = lag and unreliable connection => bad for emulators
