Sony's critics may baulk at the high price of PS3 but according to the retail sector, it's consumers who will ultimately decide whether GBP 425 is too much to ask when the console arrives on March 23.
From entertainment chains to independent specialists, UK retailers have told GamesIndustry.biz that whatever analysts, industry insiders and rival format holders think of the PS3's price tag, gamers will vote with their wallets.
"Obviously, it's quite a high threshold, which may or may not prove an issue, particularly among non-core PlayStation fans," said Tim Ellis, head of games at HMV.
"But then it's also the case that PS3 is much more than just a games console. Gamers already know this and I'm sure will respond accordingly."
Sony's pre-release mantra that the PS3 can do more than play videogames seems to have swayed consumer opinion - and that's reassured Don McCabe, MD of specialist chain Chips, that consumers will consider it worth the asking price.
"I don't think the price point will put customers off, although they'll be looking at the specification of the machine carefully to see if anything has changed from the US and Japanese units," he said.
"It's a lot of money, so it has to deliver everything the consumer expects - and if it does it may go some way to allaying fears of Europe being treated as second best."
"GBP 425 is a lot of money, but so is GBP 300 and GBP 179.99," commented Steve O'Brien, of leading indie store Action Replay.
"The price isn't prohibitive. People have a lot more disposable income and they don't mind spending it if they understand what they get for it. The PS3 is a lot more than just a games console, and those that are going to buy it understand that," he continued.
And it's not just consumers who will have to dig deep, according to McCabe. "To buy the amount of machines we require, it's not a cheap thing. We'll have to have serious conversations with our financial people to convince them to invest a lot of money at a traditionally quiet time of year," he said.
Sony has yet to announce how many of the 1 million PS3 units heading to Europe for launch day will reach the UK. But even if Britain gets around 30 per cent of the allocation, as has happened historically, and ends up with around 300,000 units, there may not be enough to meet the unprecedented demand from a loyal PlayStation fanbase.
"Initial demand is bound to be much greater than supply - that's an inevitable reality of dealing with such a major product, where anticipation has been building for years," said HMV's Ellis. "We'll start taking pre-orders, and I'm sure they'll take off in a big way."
"Without a doubt, the first 300,000 units for the UK are going to be snapped up by those we consider the hardcore gamers, the early adopters," said O'Brien.
"Pre-orders have been phenomenal. Over Christmas, Wii and the Xbox 360 were incredibly well supported, but without a doubt, taking in fixed pre-orders, the PS3 was the product that raised the most interest," he revealed.
Retail has also praised the software launch titles, even happy to concede sales of digitally distributed titles for helping expand the market.
"The industry has finally grown up and we no longer have to look at 'either/or'. We can now look at 'as well' in terms of product, and that's great news, not just for retail but for everyone," said O'Brien.
"If there's that much software available for launch, we'll be very happy. Even digital titles help grow the console market as a whole," he said.
All eyes are now firmly set on the March 23 date, less than eight weeks away. With retail already pleased at the success of the Wii and Xbox 360 launches, it's Sony's turn to prove it's still got the consumer pulling power once synonymous with the PlayStation brand.
"Nintendo and Microsoft have both delivered fantastic products and software, so Sony has really got to prove itself," commented McCabe.
"Historically, Sony did everything right for the PSone and PS2 launches, but the PSP launch was only so-so. For a long time Sony has been the king of the videogames industry, so the question now is, are they going to reassert that dominance again?"

Ubisoft's PlayStation 3 version of Splinter Cell: Double Agent will feature a pair of new maps based on new environments, a new set of co-operative challenges and a new spy character.
It's all part of Ubisoft Annecy's push to try and get people talking about the PS3 Double Agent, which - even as a day-one title - will be arriving five months later than its Xbox 360 counterpart.
"Because the solo campaign already forms a whole, we thought it was more relevant to focus on the multiplayer additional content," producer Mathieu Hector explained when we spoke to him.

Team 17 has had no problems adapting Lemmings for PS3, but has hinted that larger, more ambitious titles may find the transition to Sony's new platform a little more difficult.
"Largely speaking, we've had little problem adopting to the PlayStation3," said Martyn Brown, studio director for Team 17. "But then again it would be foolhardy to assume we are 'bashing the metal' on the hardware with Lemmings as much as something like Heavenly Sword or MotorStorm."
Brown continued with a warning to those with lofty plans for their next-generation games.
"There was a lot of rumour-mongering prior to the PS3 development hardware arriving that it would require huge teams and untold complexities," he said. "There's certain elements of that ring true, but only for titles that are wildly ambitious in terms of range and content detail, but as for day-to-day development, we've more or less taken it in our stride."

Sports Interactive chief Miles Jacobson believes the five-month delay in Europe has helped strengthen PlayStation 3's launch line-up.
"I'm excited by the amount of quality in the launch titles for Europe," he sportingly divulged. "And the five month delay has certainly helped from that perspective."
It's a convincing argument, with titles like MotorStorm, Virtua Fighter 5 and Virtua Tennis 3 heading a healthy European release list; games that weren't available at either the US or Japanese launch.
"Cost could become an issue later on in the cycle, and a good online system will be important, but for early adopters, it'll be all about the games," added Jacobson.

Britain's PlayStation 3 development community is refusing to comment en masse today on the European launch details for the machine that were announced at midnight last night.
"As a registered PS3 developer we cannot discuss or comment on the PS3 from a development angle because of our contractual commitments with Sony," said Paul Jobling marketing director at Eutechnyx. "However, you can say that we are very excited about the launch of the PS3 and wish it every success!"
Jobling's comment was mirrored by other first party developers in the UK this morning, as Non-Disclosure Agreements kept opinion about the launch details firmly off the record.
"I'd really like to help you, but the NDA's do indeed bind us too," said Philip Oliver, CEO of Blitz Games.
"We'd love to give you a little comment on this but could I please direct you to... SCEE," said Nina Kristensen, chief of development at Ninja Theory. "As [Heavenly Sword] is a PS3 exclusive, in this context our PS3 comments really also need to go through [SCEE]."
Sadly, even the SCEE representative didn't get back to us despite being poked with a sharp stick.
Criterion Studios, the EA-owned developer of the Burnout series, also admitted it was bound by the same gagging order as everyone else when asked to comment about the PlayStation 3.
At midnight last night Sony announced that the PlayStation 3 will launch across Europe on 23rd March at a GBP 425, EUR 599 price-point. There will be 30 titles to chose from on day one, and estimates suggest around 300,000 units will be available in the UK.

The UK can expect to get 300k PS3s at launch on March 23, semi-official blog ThreeSpeech has reported.
"We've been thinking/speculating/joining-the-dots/piecing snippets of info together over how many units the UK is likely to have initially (at day one of retail)," reads the site. "The UK market accounts for approximately 25-30% of European business. We therefore confidently predict that the UK will have around 300,000 units at the outset."
If true then that's a lot more than Xbox 360 and Wii launches. "Sticking with the maths, from figures we have to hand, we think this will amount to more than the combined number of Wii and 360 consoles that were initially shipped," adds the site.
Expect word on other European territories soon.

TGS 2006: Unreal Tournament PS3 Supports MODs
Microsoft 'quite negative toward user-created content.'
By Patrick Klepek, 09/22/2006
Amidst all the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 hands-on impressions and high-resolution videos, Gamasutra sat in on a Q&A session with Epic Games' CEO Tim Sweeney during TGS, where he discussed the difficulties and benefits of working with the PlayStation 3 hardware, how game development will change in the future and his enthusiasm for Sony's "enlightened business model" when it comes to online gaming.
Sony's approach will enable Epic Games to grant fans access to create their own content for Unreal Tournament 2007 using Epic Games-released development tools and distribute them to PlayStation 3 users. Nothing like this has been attempted on consoles before because it wrestles control over content from the publishers, but Sweeny says he "would love to transfer this mod community over to the console platforms."
Read the rest here: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153936
Mods have and perhaps always will prolong the life of a game and it is interesting that Sony is allowing this, but the question begs to be asked: Will other game companies follow suit? Do you think this move will help the PS3 or hamper it? What do you all think?

News/Release from JasoPSP
I have made a paint-like program for the PSP. It is my first ever release in C. Currently, you can draw lines/scribbles in 6 different colours. You use the shoulder buttons to cycle through the colours. (the colour you are on isn't actually displayed, that may be included in the next release).
It also allows you to save the file as pic.png in ms0:/PICTURE by pressing START. If there is another image in there called pic.png, it will over-write. (I am just a beginner). The cursor WILL be on the picture when it is saved.
You can clear the canvas by pressing SELECT.

New release of the Custom Firmware that also supports the Full Speed Playstation Emulator, heres whats new:
Firmware Updates:
* AVC videos bitrate limit patched. The firmware limited the bitrate of avc videos to only 768 Kbps. OE now forces the limit to be 16384 Kbps. (Note: this doesn't mean than the psp can handle such a high bitrate, this means than they won't show error. I don't know which is the real maximum bitrate than the psp can handle at full speed)
* Speed of OE boot is now ~3 seconds faster than previous versions. (without plugins)
* CPU speed of XMB can now be changed.
* Wifi can now work at 333 Mhz!
* Added access to flash 0 and 1 via usb in the recovery menu, based on the great idea of USBSSS by Booster. Note that writing is enabled, so this is intended only for advanced users that know what they are doing in each moment.(It is not a great idea to change anything from the kd folder). Because of this addition, the rest of flashing options were removed.
* PSP isos can now be deleted as any normal memstick games. (also the size of the iso now shows fine when you press triangle->information).
* When formatting memory stick, GAME150, GAME303 and ISO directories will be automatically created!
* Changes in internal HEN core:
o If a EBOOT.PBP with a plain DATA.PSP had a data.psar, modulemgr took as size of the executable the size of data.psp+data.psar. Fixed. (this fix enables psx games to have plain data.psp without causing a memory error).
o Added a couple of patches found by Tyranid. One allows syscalls instructions to be used in kernel mode without causing a crash. The other allows sceKernelQueryModuleInfo to work with sceInit and previous modules.
Popstation Updates:
* The writing is now a bit different. This will avoid "Memory stick blinking too much" bug when using the plugin to load the 3.02 pops.
* popstation now lets the use of non-encrypted DATA.PSP. If data.psp is in the same directory as the app, popstation will use that as the DATA.PSP of the eboot.pbp. Otherwise, it will use the one from BASE.PBP. A DATA.PSP that imitates the original sony one is included.
* EBOOT.PBP generated with a non encrypted data.psp won't need the file KEYS.BIN at all. (Note: these EBOOT.PBP cannot work in versions prior to 3.03 OE-C due to a bug that those versions had.)
Check out our Popstation Compatibility List
Got a v1.5 or 2.71 PSP, You need to use this GUIDE to update to the new custom firmware

News/release from pasky
Heres the full details:
PEC is a plugin for EPSXE that basically contains a large database of gameshark codes for playstation games.
The conversion isn't 100% compatible because PEC uses what I would call an array of codes.
Codes such as "Weapon modifier 1" 12341234 00??
01 "Sword"
02 "Shield"
Only the modifier code will be written and not the variations. (Only 12341234 00?? is written).
Also, Some of the Sony codes (SLUS,SLES) are incorrect, a lot are displayed as 00000. Be sure to double check your particular game and input the correct one.
Requires the .NET 2.0 Framework:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
The Converter Can Be Gotten Here:
http://www.geocities.com/pasky13/PEC..._Converter.zip
Simply open select the Convert button and open the PEC database file which can be gotten from the official site:
http://www.emucheater.com/download.php
Or here (may not be up long):
http://www.sendspace.com/file/flriar
*NOTE* CWcheat cannot support large database files, it is a limitation of the PSP memory. Weltall may or may not have plans to develop a workaround. Since the PEC database is pretty damn huge after conversion (3.19MB) The game will crash when loading it. So I suggest you use the database editor to cut down on the codes you do not want and keep the file size under 300KB to be safe before using it.
Enjoy!
He also posted this release:
Gameshark to CWcheat formatter:
It's strictly for cmgsccc.com's codes. All you have to do is copy everything on the table from cmgsccc.com
Paste it into Notepad and save it in its original format:
Will be output as the Following
Then open the text document with my converter and it will ask you to save it to a *.db file.
NOTE: It won't convert Caetla codes on located on the site, it will just skip them (no point anyways since the gameshark version is always there)
Notify me of any problems. Thanks.
Enjoy.
Requires .NET 2.0 Framework:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Okay , well 3 week's back i started to learn C/C++ and its pretty confusing . So i started lua , and i came up with Y.A.R.G ( Yet another Rpg Game ) the Lua Rpg Game . Its not extremely advanced , but im trying my best after 1 week of studying tutorial's . The graphics from this game where taken from a game called N.A.R.G (Not Another Rpg Game) . I bow to them for the good graphic's. The Fadeing Code and the Ai code was givin to me from Zion . Thank you zion , but i had to mod alot of the AI code to work in my game . He also gave me the SkullGuy Graphics . The reason i had to have graphics givin to me is because , i have window's service pack 1 ( lost SP2 cd = \ ) and i cannot install paint.net or Gimp without Sp2 . So to make a long story short i worked 3 weeks on this . Please PLEASE PLEASE give me suggestions comments and encouragement. encouragement always makes a coder more encouraged to do a project. Also im in a lot of need of a gfx creator.
Thank you,
Gh0ztx
ENJOY!
PS :This is a setup for 3.03oe-b , but you can just change the path to game instead of GAME150
In game screenshot .. the character was attacking and got hit , in the game there is config settings in which u can remove the top left corner stuff .
a pause game picture
Now ive ben informed that the graphics that i used from N.A.R.G were took from RPG Maker Xp , so therefore i will remove NARG from credits and add RPG Maker xp in there , sorry for this , i didnt really research it much =\ . in later releases ill be moding the sprites to look diffrent , sorry for this .

via IGN
In the early part of 2005, Midway rejuvenated its alien-centric lightgun shooter franchise on the PC, Xbox and PlayStation 2 with Area 51. The game was a pleasant surprise all around, boasting fantastic visuals (especially on the consoles) and an engaging storyline that wound tighter and tighter as it progressed. This summer, Midway Studios - Austin will unleash its sequel on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in the form of BlackSite: Area 51.
While details on the storyline are scarce at this point, it sounds as if you'll be given choices along the way that will allow you to dictate the moral standing of your character. The game description words this as follows: "The player's modern-day emotions and fears are driven into a world charged with grave responsibility affecting lives hanging in the balance and eventually finding himself torn between his professional orders and his own ethical standards. In the end, only the actions of the player and his squad can shape the outcome of BlackSite: Area 51 during this potentially pivotal moment in history."
Speaking of the squad, you're now in complete control of a Special Forces squad. Their morale will play a part in how well they perform. Properly commanding them will have them at their best, but running them poorly into bad situations will negatively affect their aim, wear down on their fatigue and make them even lose the will to fight. Squad commands are said to be contextual, utilizing a single button to take care of all your available commands without the need to scroll through menus or whatnot.
Vehicles will now play a part in the game. Vehicles such as HMMWVs, ATVs and even civilian vehicles will play a part in the action. Helicopter raids will also be present where you'll take a seat in the gunner's position to mow down enemy soldiers from up on high.
The level design is promised to be multi-pathed with various routes that you can take to surround and flank the enemy. Cover points will be prominent, encouraging you to make proper use of your squad and covering fire. The cover won't be safe for long however as much of the game's environments will be destructible - to what extent, we're not sure, but the trailer that you'll find in our video section looks promising.
Lastly, BlackSite: Area 51 will ship with a number of online multiplayer modes. These will be a mixture of classic game types like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture-the-Flag, along with a number of brand-new variants that will be unique to the game, like the Human vs. Reborn and Siege modes, where teams attempt to control each of the levels territories while capturing their enemies.
BlackSite: Area 51 is scheduled to ship sometime this summer on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. We'll have in-depth impressions with the game very shortly, so stay tuned.

A recent report published by market research group Research and Markets (the redundancy gives us a headache too) has chosen Sony's PS3 as the winner of the next-generation console wars. The report, titled The Transforming Global Video Games Market: The Emergence of Next Generation Gaming, deals primarily with the impact of next-generation consoles on the online games sector.
Based on its extensive analysis of the current growth trends in the industry, Research and Markets expects Sony's PlayStation 3 to come out on top in the next-generation console war. The group expects the PS3 to have an installed user base of around 75 million globally by the year 2010. While the study notes that both Sony and Nintendo offer unique products, Research and Markets still felt that Sony's superior technology would give them the edge over the competition.
Although the group designated Sony as the future market leader this gen, they gave very little in the way of reasoning to back up this claim. The primary focus of the study was analyzing the impact of next-generation consoles on the online games sector, rather than determining the factors which might lead to dominance in the next-generation console market.

Over and over again, we get questions from people asking things like:
When will there be a 2.81 downgrader?
Should I sell my 3.03 PSP and buy a 1.5?
Should I upgrade my 2.81 to 3.03?
This article is an attempt to provide some balanced answers to those questions.
Here are the facts:
It looks like the Team C+D kernel mode exploit will work all the way up to v3.03 - the relevant code seems to be unchanged.
It's very likely that Sony will patch that exploit in the next firmware.
As soon as a user-mode exploit is found for 2.81-3.03, it should be possible to get homebrew running on those firmwares.
It looks like the current 2.80 downgrader will probably work on v3.03, once we can run homebrew on that firmware.
Dark_AleX's OE firmwares are the best platform for homebrew users, and it seems likely that it will be possible to keep updating OE for the latest firmwares shortly after they are released.
It has historically always been easier to downgrade lower firmwares.
So what does all that mean for 2.81-3.03 owners?
Well, right now things are more hopeful for you than they have been for bleeding edge firmwares for a long time. We're only 1 step away from being able to downgrade your PSP and move it onto an OE firmware. It's almost certain that a downgrader will eventually come - but no-one can accurately predict when that might be, so please don't ask!
Upgrading to the next firmware release would be homebrew suicide. Don't expect any sympathy if you choose to upgrade as soon as the next firmware is released - if you wait a short time, you can probably have it as an OE version instead.
Upgrading your firmware even from 2.81 to 3.00 is probably not a great move - you may delay your ability to downgrade when a downgrader finally comes.
One final note - if you have more money than patience, then your best bet for getting homebrew on your non-homebrewable PSP is to simply sell it, and buy a downgradeable PSP. The difference in price is not very large these days, and so it's not really a hard thing to do if you really can't wait.
Luckily the likes of Success HK are selling v1.5 Homebrew Friendly PSPs in Blue, Silver and Pink and Divineo China are selling v2.71 Homebrew Friendly PSPs in White and Black for all of you who want homebrew now and believe me the full speed PSX emulator makes you want to play homebrew more than ever.
