Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has predicted that the PlayStation 3 will sell out in Europe by May, with a price cut of more than EUR 150 expected inside 12 months.
"I'm actually surprised that consoles are not priced more like other consumer electronics, with early movers charged a bunch and the mass market charged less," Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz - using the example of DVD players, which are now available for much lower prices than when they first launched.
He went on to dismiss suggestions that the high cost of Sony's new console might affect sales, stating, "The PS3 can command GBP 425 from the hardcore and I think you'll see price cuts a year from now, probably to GBP 300."
According to Pachter, the UK's stock allocation will "quickly disappear" after PS3 goes on sale come March 23, and the console will "sell out relatively soon after launch" in the rest of Europe.
"There will be a few more games by then, with several great games announced for release in May and beyond, so I expect a full sellout by the end of April," he said.
By the time the PS3 launches the Xbox 360 will have been available in Europe for over a year, while the Wii was a sell-out success when it launched in December. However, Pachter said he doesn't believe this will necessarily cause big problems for Sony.
"March is not too late, given Sony's production problems and only 800,000 Wiis sold in Europe last quarter," he stated.
"My guess is that the Wii will be up to near 1.6 - 2 million by March 23, but that is far from an insurmountable head start."
Pachter described the PS3's graphics as "phenomenal", adding that the cost of hooking the machine up to a 1080p monitor is "worth every penny".
"I think that games like Gears of War on the 360 look every bit as good, but given that PS3 game development was rushed, I fully expect next year's games to look better on the PS3," Pachter concluded.

January 29th, 2007, 17:24 Posted By: wraggster
RedOctane will continue to support PlayStation 2 with the Guitar Hero series for as long as the platform is viable, according to publishing boss Dusty Welch.
"The PS2 was one of the top selling platforms in 2006, and every indication from Sony is that they will continue to manufacture and market the platform aggressively in 2007 and 2008," Welch told GamesIndustry.biz.
"Our plan is to be a multi-platform publisher, meaning viable platforms will be supported."
So far Guitar Hero has appeared only on PS2, but with an Xbox 360 version of the sequel due out this spring speculation has been mounting as to whether RedOctane's focus could shift.
Welch also confirmed recent reports that original developer Harmonix will no longer be involved with the series, with duties now in the hands of Tony Hawk developer Neversoft.
"At the moment, we?re still working with Harmonix on certain projects until completion, though moving forward, Neversoft will be taking over the development duties for the Guitar Hero franchise," he explained.
Harmonix was recently bought out by MTV, and although RedOctane - itself now a part of Activision - has been coy about the reasons behind its decision to part ways with the developer, some industry watchers suspect the moves were connected.

January 29th, 2007, 17:20 Posted By: wraggster
Those of you eagerly awaiting Okami's 9th February release date will be slightly cheesed-off to hear us Europeans will receive exactly the same game as the US were treated to back in September.
It's localisation that caused the delay, apparently, which would be down to you lot with your long-word languages.
"The reason it's taking so long to get it from US to here is the localisation into European languages," a spokesperson for Capcom told Eurogamer. "The script is about 1000 pages I believe, it's a 60 hour game."
So, no special bonus disc, no Teen Wolf t-shirt, no "painting for beginners" sets, but a large and expansive game: we can make do.
Okami, if you haven't heard, is a free roaming game from soon to be closed Clover Studio, in which you take control of a wolf who is actually a god and uses a paintbrush to cut people in half in heaven in between listening to a garrulous flea ramble on about mice with swords (thanks Tom).

Colin McRae: DIRT will push next-gen systems in ways we've not yet seen, executive producer Gavin Raeburn has told Eurogamer, and it's all thanks to the newly designed "Neon" engine.
"CMR 3, 4 and 5 were little more than extensions of the PS1 code base," he told us. "DIRT has all new and visually stunning engine that is pushing next-gen hardware to the max right from the off."
"The damage, particle effects, post-production, car physics, car audio and AI are all far in advance of anything we have yet seen on next gen."
Lofty aspirations, especially held against titles like MotorStorm, which is the best of the launch titles, at least as far as Raeburn is concerned.
Colin McRae: DIRT launches for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in June. The three versions will be almost identical, but Raeburn admits that Microsoft leads the way with its online service:
"Xbox Live set the benchmark with regards to online console gaming, so it is a compliment to Microsoft that we are endeavouring to replicate much of this on the PS3 and PC platforms."
There are no plans for a Wii version in June: it would simply take too much time, as it would have to be developed from the ground up to make use of the console's unique controls. Still, "we never say never, of course."

"It's a beautiful machine, it's a great-looking piece of equipment, so I think Sony's going to be fine" - Mark Rein defends PS3.
"People think it's bad if they can't ship enough, and then they think it's bad if they can ship enough. It's like, which is it? Either they can't fulfill your order or they can, and they're both good.
"Being able to fulfill your order is good news, right? Go out and buy your PS3 now. You can get one. That's miraculous", Rein responded in a interview with Game Informer when asked if he thought Sony is in trouble.
"So as long as people are willing to pay the price for the machine-and I'm sure lots of people are-I think they're hopefully in a good situation. I think they've done a good job with their downloadable content. There's not a lot of games on there, but the ones that are there are really high quality, and I'm really impressed with the games. It's a beautiful machine, it's a great-looking piece of equipment, so I think Sony's going to be fine," Rein added.
"Hopefully, they'll have some big, hit must-have games... I think Sony's going to do great. People just want to say, it doesn't matter what, people just want to say bad things."
Well, with Unreal Tournament 3 coming to PS3, he's hardly going to stand up and say Sony's console is a steaming pile of doomed plop, is he?

NeoGAF forum goers are wondering if PLAY magazine has confirmed Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for PSP. In the Letter from the Editor page, Dave Halverson says "Can you say Dracula X meets Symphony of the Night". Later on in PLAY's Most Anticipated games of 2007 page Dave lists Dracula X: Rondo of Blood for PSP as his #3 choice.
Why would Dave put Dracula X as a PSP game if it wasn't coming to the portable? Especially on a list of anticipated games of 2007. That still doesn't explain his comment about Dracula X meets Symphony of the Night. Maybe Symphony of the Night is coming to the PSP as well, or some new game that combines elements of both. Of course the less exciting prospect could be that he was just referring to Symphony of the Night coming to Xbox 360 and Dracula X to PSP.
I suppose we'll just have to wait for an official announcement to find out for sure, but this info is interesting none the less.

DIGG THIS
Fanjita and Ditlew have released a new downgrader for the latest version of PSP firmware, heres the latest release info below:
v3.03 Downgrader
After much work over the past few days, we finally succeeded - we have an easy-to-use downgrader for v3.03 PSPs!
Some ground-rules:
* This downgrader is for v3.03 firmware only. But if you have v2.81 - v3.02, no problem - you can just upgrade to v3.03 to use the downgrader.
* You need a copy of the unpatched GTA:Liberty City Stories UMD. No ISOs, no patched UMDs, not Vice City Stories. See here for some info on how to check if your version is patched. The most reliable way : the unpatched disks have the v2.0 firmware update on them.
* This downgrader is intended to enable homebrew. Homebrew is NOT the same as piracy. Don't be a thieving loser - buy the games you play.
* The downgrader will work on all current PSP hardware (TA-079 - TA-086). Patching of TA-082+ is automatic in the downgrader.
* You downgrade at your own risk. There is always a chance of bricking, although we have done everything we can think of to make this process safe.
Full instructions for downgrading are included in the Downgrader_HOWTO.txt file in the ZIP file. Read them carefully! You will need
Warning: After downgrading from 3.03 to 1.5, there are some remnants of 3.03 left in flash. If you later try to re-upgrade to 3.03 and repeat the downgrade, things will break. At some later point, we will work on a cleaner that will remove these extra files. Until then, enjoy! (Don't worry, upgrading to 3.03 OE firmwares still works fine).
HEN for v3.03 (final release)
If you're not keen on the risk of downgrading your PSP, you might prefer to use a homebrew loader instead. Well, we've thought of you - we give to you "HEN 303 - the Duff release" (named in the eLoader tradition!).
HEN 303 (short for Homebrew ENabler) works in the same way as Dark_AleX's HEN for 2.71 firmwares. By running HEN, it installs a patch in your PSP's memory, that allows you to run homebrew almost as if you had a v1.5 PSP. This patch remains in place until you fully turn off your PSP - it will survive the PSP being placed into sleep mode.
The requirements for HEN are the same as for the downgrader - you need the unpatched GTA:LCS, and a v3.03 firmware PSP.
You can view the readme.txt file in the archive for more details about how to use it. Remember that not as much homebrew works with HEN as it does with eLoader or v1.5 firmware. But we hope to release an eLoader plugin for HEN soon, that would improve that situation - and remember that the amount of homebrew that works with HEN is increasing all the time.
Note: a pre-release version of this file was leaked on the internet. It is dangerous and could brick your PSP - do not run it or distribute it. The authentic version contains the text "This is the official final released version of 3.03 HEN" in the readme.txt file.

CUSTOM FIRMWARE EXTENDER 1.0
========================= =====
"Custom Firmware Extender" by Cpasjuste is a set of two plugins for Dark_alex custom's firmware,
that will, like the title say, add some extra options to the SONY PSP.
With "Custom Firmware Extender 1.0" you should be able to :
- Start and stop a ftpd server while under the VSH (PSP Menu) to transfer files via WIFI (WEP,WPA).
- Reset the PSP with a button while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Power off the PSP with a button while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Change the speed of the PSP CPU/FSB while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Start and stop Usb Mass Storage under the VSH (PSP Menu) while browsing.
- Take a screenshot while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO) saved in the PHOTO folder.
- Set a default CPU/BUS speed at startup.
- Set Usb Mass Storage at startup.
- Configure your buttons mapping (NOTE button + your selected button).
INSTALLATION
============
- Copy the content of the MS_ROOT folder to your memory stick.
- Configure your combo buttons in the file "cfe_cfg.txt" located in the "ms0:/seplugins/" directory
- Enable cfe_vsh.prx and cfe_game.prx under the recovery menu.
KNOW BUGS
=========
- There is a bug when exiting the psp web browser, all the network stuff isn't unloaded. The ftpd server
will crash if you try to launch it after browsing the web.
GREATS
======
- Like always Tyranid for his work on the psp sdk and psplink.
- Dark_Alex of course for the custom's firmware.
- PSPKrazy for PSP-FTPD.
- joek2100 for his work on the mp3prx module for CF, giving the source of his work.
- People i may forget.

Cheers, Cpasjuste

New release from Dabomstew
An easy way to change the version displayed in Custom firmware SE/OE system settings without hexediting or manual flashing - and unlike X-Flash, you can use any characters, rather than just 1.00-9.99.
This is tested and working fine on my own 3.03 OE-A and 3.02 OE-B psp, but I cannot guarantee that it will work 100% every time.
Read the included readme for usage instructions.
I will release an update if any problems are discovered, but the program will not receive any more functionality (except maybe updates to support later versions of DAX's custom firmware).
Currently at version 5 which added 2.71 SE (all versions) support, 3.03 OE-C support, and an automatic version detector.

Hi
IceTea 1.0 is now available
IceTea is a graphical user interface for making PSX Eboots.
I know there are already to many of them but I started the project because of two reasons:
-to incorporate all the latest PSX<->PSP features into one single ready to use executable plus make it as easy to use as possible
-to make a multiplatform solution for pops (almost all pops guis needs .net framework ._.)
(should work on win98 onwards)
It uses the wxWidgets library for the graphical output, although only win binary available atm.
Feel free to port it to whatever OS wxWidgets supports.
As of now IceTea provides the following features:
-Create PSP compatible PSX eboot (customize eboot menu appearance)
-Extract ISO from PSX eboot
-Create manual from png images
-Create manual from text file (useful for gamefaqs,..)
IceTea is open source released under the GPL
Download it here:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/icetea/
I also want to thank the following people whose code I've used in IceTea
-Coldbird
-Dark_Alex
-flatwhatson
-Tinnus
And also everyone I forgot who made it all possible
Source can be grabbed via svn
In case you haven't noticed in the picture:
Generated psx eboots will only run on 3.03 OE-C (onwards)
Though I've tested it thoroughly you may experience some bugs
PS: Whoever knows the reason why it's called IceTea gets a cookie :P

Finally a decent release from Coldbird for those like me with PAL Games.
Well Well... Paladin is my new PAL to NTSC Converter for PSX Games... its kinda handy...
And works in 99% of Cases better than Zapper, because it modifies the VModes rather than the YPos Values... ;-)
If you still experience a Screen Displacement after patching with Paladin, apply a YPos Move to 0/0 with Zapper...
Keep in Mind thought that its highly suggested not to use Zapper or any other Patching Tool if its possible... only move the Coordinates to 0/0 with Zapper if needed... :-)

You don't even need a USB cable... just play from your PSP straightaway, or download the offline website, and download it there, so you can play without an Internet connection!
There are also some audio/animations on the site, and they all take up little space
Sorry if this is old, thought it was cool to play Bowman or listen to 'You Kicked My Dog' on my PSP

Best Buy and Future Shop may have jacked up the price of a PS3 on our northern neighbors from C$659.99 to C$699.99, but it wasn't an ill-advised cash grab on Sony's part. An SCEC representative confirmed that Sony didn't nudge the price skywards; individual retailers made the choice to do so. I never thought I'd tell someone to buy anything at GameStop—who's maintaining the MSRP—but the PS3 makes us all do strange things.
