Production delays for PlayStation 3 have taken their toll on Sony's bottom line, but the company was still able to beat profit estimates and raise its annual forecasts today.
Sony's game division recorded a quarterly loss of 54.2 billion yen (EUR 343m) for the period ended December 31, which the company blamed on PS3 start-up costs and the decision to sell the next-generation console below the cost of production to develop market share. It also admitted that sales of PlayStation Portable have been weak.
However the company recorded net profit of 159.9 billion yen (EUR 1.01bn) overall, which is only down on last year's number by some five percent. Meanwhile operating profit was up over 100 percent to 177.4 billion yen (EUR 1.12bn) thanks to better-than-expected sales of flatscreen "Bravia" televisions and Cybershot cameras.
This enabled Sony to raise its projected net profit for the current year, ending March 31, to 110 billion yen (EUR 696m).
As well as problems with PS3 production, centring on the company's Blu-ray next-gen DVD technology, Sony has been forced to deal with a massive laptop battery recall this year, along with a weaker yen during the October-December quarter, which would otherwise boost the value of profits from the US and Europe.

Carving shapes in the Eurogamer TV clouds this morning is a fancy new trailer for PSP title After Burner: Black Falcon.
The clip shows various bogeys being picked from the sky as well as a few missiles here and there, plus it's all wrapped up in some nostalgic '80s arcade-style music.
Planet Moon Studios is developing the title for spring 2007, and promises a single-player campaign along with competitive and co-operative Wi-Fi multiplayer modes.
There will be 19 officially licensed and customisable planes as players embark on a story-rich campaign to discover the origins of the mercenary group Black Falcon, responsible for the theft of 13 top-secret planes.

The latest God of War II trailer has smashed onto the CVG video player, and is it just us, or does it look friggin' amazing on PS2?
Among other things the latest movie shows off GoW II's stunning environments, brutal killing moves and humungous bosses - but be warned there are some spoilers in there for those who haven't finished the excellent first instalment.

Sony has chosen 12 individuals and organisations to help fuel the PlayStation 3's marketing push in the UK, Media Guardian reports.
According to the paper the 12, who range from club promoters, artists, fashion industry insiders, Dazed & Confused magazine and the BBC's 1Xtra, have been given a free hand by Sony to "create original content inspired by key characteristics of the PS3."
Each of Sony's chosen 12 will then distributed content digitally across a wide range of outlets including social networks such as MySpace, websites, blogs, e-mail and their own contacts.
According to SCE UK marketing man Alan Duncan, 'traditional' avenues of avertising and PR aren't enough to communicate the PS3's appeal: "The idea is to use physical space, blogs and other forms of digital networking to inform, entertain and encourage interaction and debate about all the different things the PS3 can do."
Of course Sony recently used the same strategy to market the PSP - the infamous 'all I want for Christmas is a PSP' campaign comes to mind - which didn't exactly manage to send Sony's handheld flying off the shelves.
Rana Reeves, director of Shine Communications which developed the digital strategy with Sony, tells the Guardian "Traditionally, brand communication with consumers has been channelled via an ad agency. The explosion of social networks and blogging, however, has created a seismic shift. Brands wanting to enter this world have to be prepared to trust consumers to talk about them whether the comment is good or bad."

Earlier this month, during a meeting with Codemasters, we were afforded our first look at the Wii version of Heatseeker. Also in development for the PlayStation 2 and the PlayStation Portable, Heatseeker is an action-oriented flight combat game from the same studio responsible for 2005's Heroes of the Pacific. The PS2 and Wii versions of Heatseeker will purportedly be almost identical, although the latter is made more interesting by its support of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controller.
While Heroes of the Pacific was set during World War II, Heatseeker will task you with combating modern-day terrorists from the controls of more than 20 different planes, including some of the latest fifth-generation fighters. The F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II planes that we saw during our demo were nicely detailed, and in keeping with Heatseeker's arcade-style gameplay, both had an unlimited supply of ammo. In addition to a machine gun, each plane will be able to carry two different types of missiles or bombs, and you'll get to choose which heavy weapons you go into battle with according to the type of mission that you're about to attempt.
Although dogfighting will obviously play a large part in the game, your mission objectives in Heatseeker will include escorting friendly craft, protecting structures, and, of course, destroying enemy units and other targets. Adding further variety to certain missions will be the addition of two wingmen for you to command, the need to identify targets before being given permission to engage them, and operational ceilings that prevent you from flying your chosen fighter into space or from popping up on enemy radar. Many of the missions in Heatseeker will task you with completing multiple objectives, so after defending a runway or an aircraft carrier from enemy bombers, for example, you might then be required to escort the planes that take off from it to their objective.
Heatseeker's mission objectives promise to be quite varied.
The Wii version of Heatseeker will support the same conventional control setup that's used on the PS2, but it's certainly a game that appears to lend itself to the Wii's unique motion-sensitive controllers. There are two different Wii-exclusive control setups available, letting you choose which part of the Wii's unique two-piece controller you use to fly your plane. The most popular control option during our demo was undoubtedly the one that will let you tilt the Nunchuk controller to steer your plane while using its analog stick to control the throttle, brake, and roll. The Wii Remote's directional pad is used to switch weapons, the A button is used to switch between active targets, and the trigger buttons on the Wii Remote and the Nunchuk are used to fire missiles and machine guns, respectively. The second motion-sensitive controls option works in much the same way, except that the Wii Remote is used to move an icon around the screen that your plane will always point toward.
Although the Wii version of Heatseeker that we were looking at was clearly still quite early (as evidenced by onscreen instructions telling us how to play using PS2 controls), it already looks quite impressive. The clouds that float around many of the environments look convincing, and the explosions of enemy fighters that you'll occasionally get to enjoy from the perspective of an "impact cam" mounted on a missile's nose are quite spectacular.
Both the PS2 and Wii versions of Heatseeker will support only solo play, but the PSP game will feature wireless competitive gameplay modes for up to four players. All three versions of Heatseeker are currently scheduled for release in March. We look forward to bringing you more information on the game as soon as it becomes available.

Weltall posted this new release:
This is a new app made specifically to be used in conjuntion with an homebrew
"compatible" ps2 and a psp with cwcheat.
With this you will be able to move saves from the psp saved mc to the psx
mc into your ps2 and viceversa directly by connecting the psp to the usb port of your ps2
So for example if you want to continue when you are away a psx game which you normally play
on the ps2 (or the psx but you still need a ps2 for this) you can just hook your psp
with an usb cable (also a card reader can be fine) load this application, select the psx mc
and were you want to save it, insert the game cdrom and press SELECT in this way you will
be able to load it directly from cwcheat into your psx game emulated on the psp
When you want to come back playing on the ps2 it will be the inverse process so just
hook your psp load the app, select the mc were to send the savedata from the psp, insert the cd
and press start. the mc will be formatted and pullulated with the psx mc from the psp and you will
be able to continue playing your game

New release by dark420bishop:
This program will allow you to change the your XMB Camera, RSS Feed, Online Instruction Manual, Remote Play, and Certificate Utility icons. I know this program could be better but I was trying to do as little work possible to get this done as I figure it's only a matter of time before someone writes a program to replace all of the menu icons, including the submenu icons. This program is designed so you can take your current topmenu_plugin.rco and change only the selected icons so that you don't need to remake your topmenu_plugin and change all the labels.

Bomberman is a game series that has had more releases than Mario. The titles have spanned across nearly every game system ever created. Yet despite these facts, most of the gameplay additions to the series have been ignored in favor of playing the classic multiplayer. And that's okay when the multiplayer gameplay is so perfect.
Every gamer should have at least one version of Bomberman on every system they have. I'm pretty sure it's against gamer law to not do so. Luckily for PSP owners who haven't jumped on the Bomberman train, another Bomberman release is coming to Sony's handheld.
Bomberman Land Portable has the land split into pieces and Bomberman must put it back together again. Of course if history repeats itself, it's unlikely we'll play the single player version anyway. But maybe this Bomberman will be the first one to actually provide a worthwhile single player experience. No US release date has yet been set, but the Bomberman Land Portable hits Japan in March.

This also comes from IGN. Seems they've got all the good interviews and features to start the week out with! They took the time to give us their predictions for 2007 regarding Sony's console. We'll toss their predictions up, make our own, then turn the microphone to you guys.
Duke Nukem Forever ships at last, being the 10th anniversary of its inception
PSP's fate determined in 2007 -- new design, new features, lowered price, etc
PlayStation 3's promotional sales blitz takes on new heights
Sony goes for tilt + rumble controller, redesigns PS-Store to look more like XBL
The PS2 gets cheaper and multi-colored
Sony purchases many game studios to beef up its first and second party game developers
(personal favorite/hopeful) Many classic titles get revived, new entries revealed... cited were a new Chrono Trigger game (would we want a third title or a remake of the original?), new Lufia game (oh, please, that would be great... no more of the subpar GameBoy titles, please)... and others that would rock, like Blaster Master and Streets of Rage.
By December 31, 2007, Sony will slightly overtake Microsoft in worldwide sales.
Killzone gameplay will come as close as possible to match the debated E3 2005 trailer.
Metal Gear Solid 4 will get pushed to 2008... no surprise if that happens, really.
We predict the following: Sony will survive. That's it. The negative media attacks are starting to subside, new games are on the horizon and a worldwide launch will be realized by the end of March. From there, it's a guessing game. We'd like to agree with the classic game revival theory, too. Well, that's all we're going to stretch out and predict. What are your thoughts?

PlayStation Universe is reporting that Final Fantasy XIII has been confirmed for release in 2008. The news is based on an interview with Tetsuya Nomura (Director of Final Fantasy Versus XIII), which appeared in the January 19 issue of Japan's Famitsu magazine.
Closer inspection of the interview reveals that Nomura simply made the following statement with regard to Versus XIII:
"We're planning to have the final in-game graphics prepared at some point during 2007, so please wait for that -- and then we can speak about Versus XIII in more detail."
In light of that, a 2007 release for Versus XIII does seem unlikely, we admit, although not impossible. Release timings for Final Fantasy XIII and Agito XIII are not mentioned, though, and in the latest issue of Famitsu (February 9) all three games are still listed as having "unconfirmed" release dates.

GRAW 2 PS3 will now be available in 'spring', according to Ubisoft's latest release schedule, despite previously being listed as a launch title for the console.
However, Splinter Cell: Double Agent, Oblivion, Blazing Angels and Rainbow Six Vegas will all still make the deadline of 23rd March.
Still, don't despair, there's reason to be cheerful as Eurogamer TV houses a new developer diary for GRAW2.
In it we take a look at the technology behind the upcoming game, learning how next-gen capabilities are making it possible for "videogames to look and feel this amazing."
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 is due for release on Xbox 360 on 9th March, PC and PSP on 30th March, then PS3 in Spring.

Well its one of those times when Wraggy has to voice his opinion, some cheeky git on EBAY is selling an unpatched version of GTA Liberty City Stories for a starting bid of $400.
Does that take the piss or what. if the price werte say $40 then i could understand the hike but 400 dollars is way over what anyone should pay.
anyone get an opinion on this ?

Sony's third quarter financial earnings results, which are scheduled to be released tomorrow, could see its net income down to 84.1 billion yen (approx $680 million), reports Bloomberg.
The financial news service surveyed five analysts, and its median estimates weigh in with the PlayStation 3 maker falling dramatically short of its previous third quarter earnings, which saw record profits of 168.9 billion yen ($1.39 billion) last year.
Sony CEO Howard Stringer has "failed to fend off Nintendo," the report continues, with the Wii outselling the PS3 two-to-one worldwide.
The company is likely to lose a record 191.9 billion yen ($1.57 billion) from games this fiscal year, compared with a profit of 8.7 billion yen ($71 million) last year, according to the survey.
In October, Sony cut its fiscal year profit forecast to 80 billion yen, a five-year low. Shares in Sony recently jumped six percent, the biggest single increase in more than a year, although these figures trail beyond the 61 percent share-price increase for Nintendo, and the 26 percent increase for Xbox 360 maker Microsoft.
