Sony's new premium subscription service PlayStation Plus has been released for PlayStation 3.
This feature arrives with firmware version 3.4. In addition, this adds network photo sharing, video editing and uploading, star ratings for Store content, more power saving options and better Facebook connectivity.
Sony has also taken this opportunity to roll out firmware 6.3 for PSP, ensuring PlayStation Plus works across both platforms.
Like Xbox Live, PlayStation Plus costs £39.99 annually - or £11.99 for 90 days. Unlike Xbox Live, Sony's keen to offer lots of free stuff above and beyond demos.
From today, LittleBigPlanet will be free to all who sign-on to PlayStation Plus. Sony's also giving away WipEout HD, Minis Field Runners and Age of Zombies, and PSone game Destruction Derby. All that and a lot more.

Sony's worldwide studio boss Shuhei Yoshida has said that the PlayStation 3 is no longer being sold at a loss, over three years after the hardware was first released.
Back in 2006, analyst firm iSuppli suggested that Sony was losing over $300 on the 20GB PlayStation 3 unit, and over $240 on the high-end 60GB model.
At the end of last the same company still found the PS3 to be selling at a loss, although it did suggest it was on the brink of profitability.
"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," said Yoshida in an interview with IGN. "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to."
The exec also reiterated that Sony would not be cutting the cost of the home console any time this year, and is still working hard to meet demand at retail.
"When we bring the cost of hardware down, we are looking at opportunities to adjust prices if we believe that will increase demand At the moment, we are trying to catch up our production."

Brighton-based Black Rock Studios is hiring for positions on an "unannounced game on Xbox 360 and PS3".
That's according to a job posting on mother-publisher Disney's website seeking an "experienced Technical Art Director".
The listing offers no further details on the game.
Black Rock shipped Split/Second: Velocity last month, picking up 8/10 in Eurogamer's review.
Playful, spectacular and unpretentious, Split/Second is a game about triggering explosions to do away with your rivals and avoiding the same thing happening to you. It also features a variety of modes that build on that premise.
The studio's previous release was the similarly-accomplished off-road racer Pure.
Black Rock was previously part of the Climax Group, for whom it developed MotoGP titles, prior to its acquisition by Buena Vista Games in 2006.

Sony Worldwide Studios bigwig Scott Rhode isn't worried about the high cost of upgrading to a 3D-enabled living room. He reckons we're seeing a re-run of what happened with Blu-ray and he'll soon be saying, "I told you so."
"Not a concern," he told Industry Gamers. "It's a strategy.
"The best thing I can relate this to is the Blu-ray launch. I think this is like a rewind for me, a lot of the same questions, where people were saying, 'I've got a huge DVD collection; why would I upgrade to a new type of media?' And someone has to push it out there to show it's a superior technology and to show that it can achieve widespread adoption over time.
"You know, Sony's been very good at sitting on that bleeding edge," he added, "and pushing out products that show that, 'Hey, there's a 3D Bravia you can buy, but it's not just for watching Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs in 3D.' You can play interactive entertainment in 3D so it's a full experience."
Rhode said this makes good on Jack Tretton's promise of a "future-proof box".
"So," he recapped, "it's a distinct strategy that we've chosen to take to be on the bleeding edge and drive the market into these new experiences. So we're not worried about quick adoption rate. We're driving people to adopt period. "
Rhode's comments about 3D come after Sony unveiled a big push for the new viewing format at E3. Demonstrating the PS3's capabilities were a handful of titles, including an impressive display of Killzone 3.
Sony's full 3D line-up includes Gran Turismo 5, LittleBigPlanet 2 and MotorStorm: Apocalypse.

Wondering what Sony’s Japan studio is doing? Aside from The Last Guardian and overseeing White Knight Chronicles, Japan Studio is developing Ape Escape 4.
“Japan Studio are working on Ape Escape 4. They also could be multi-tasking and working on another game as well. They are known for that. Eg. Ape Escape 2 and Piposaru 2001,” says Jack, one of the members of the Ape Club team.
Check back later this week for more Ape Escape news. Apparently, there are two Ape Escape games being made for PlayStation 3.

Geo deals with all kinds of media in Japan. DVD rentals, CDs, and, of course, video games are on their shelves. In a financial briefing, Geo outlined some of their key products like renting “Alice in Wonderland” on August 4.
In the games category, they listed Gran Turismo 5, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd, and an unannounced PSP-4000. The Nintendo 3DS is on Geo’s expected product list too. According to the calendar, GeoNet will stock both products within this year.
Japanese blogs are buzzing about the find, but Geo’s calendar seems off to me. Notice Pokémon Black & White? Geo says those games are slated for October while Nintendo just announced both games for September 18.

The artist formerly known as Microsoft's corporate vice president of Xbox Live has come out in support of the company's biggest rival.
John Schappert, who is now chief operating officer at Electronic Arts, appears to have put his loyalties behind him since he left MS a year ago.
"We're platform agnostic," he told IGN. "That being said, we partnered with Sony on the press conference; we were on their stage and got to announce some things.
"I wouldn't read too much into what we're showing the demos on, but I will tell you, in the marketplace, the PlayStation 3 is doing incredibly well."
In fact, Schappert said, since the Slim and the Kevin Butler ad campaign were introduced, PS3 is "on fire". He added, "We like them all, but PlayStation 3 is doing very strong right now."
So what is it about PS3 that sends Schappert from six to midnight? Why, just look at the extra storage space Blu-ray offers, he said. This means EA can offer special editions of games like Dead Space and Medal of Honor.
"We partner with Microsoft on a ton of products, but those are just two good opportunities we had with Sony that we wanted to highlight," said Schappert.

Motion controllers have "amazing potential" for shooters, reckons Splash Damage boss, Paul Wedgwood.
Speaking to CVG, the Brink developer expressed a big interest in Microsoft and Sony's new technology, though argued that the obvious implementation for the devices in first-person shooters might not necessarily be the best.
"I think these motion controllers have amazing potential for shooters, but perhaps not in the way people might immediately think (i.e. controlling motion)," Wedgwood told CVG.
"Perhaps we'll think about that in the future, but we don't have any plans for implementation in Brink."
Firmly donning our Big Hat of Speculation, we reckon Wedgwood could be hinting at using Kinect and Move in conjunction with Brink's SMART system. But that might count as "controlling motion".
What is SMART? "The idea is really straightforward," the Splash Damage man explains. "When you're in combat and you want to get somewhere in the game world, you hold down your SMART button (which doubles as a sprint button) and it will help with jumps, vaults, mantling, sliding, and so on, allowing you to easily navigate any obstacles in your path."
That's one idea then, but surely the most intuitive use for PlayStation Move in a shooter is to aim your weapon, a bit like a PC mouse?

Publisher Sony has stated that it will likely release further HD remakes of past classics for PS3 in the coming years.
The only HD Collections confirmed to date are the already released God of War Collection and the recently announced Sly Cooper Collection, the latter of which will also support PlayStation Move.
“We are looking into ways how we can deliver the PS2 library to PS3 consumers, but were are not ready to announce anything yet,” SCE Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida told IGN.
“Santa Monica Studios had the brilliant idea to upgrade and improve God of War for PS3 with the God of War Collection that we released last year. There were a lot of positive reactions from consumers in doing that, and now we get a lot of suggestions for types of packs they'd like to see.
“So we are looking to continue to do these HD conversions.”
So what Collections could we expect to see in future? Horror series Forbidden Siren would likely be well received, as would Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and Syphon Filter.
Other possible names to add to the list include Rogue Galaxy, Wild Arms, The Mark of Kri, PaRappa the Rapper, Destruction Derby, The Getaway, Arc the Land, Ape Escape and Dark Cloud. And just imagine if Square Enix were to announce some sort of Final Fantasy revisit (three SKUs: FFI – FFVI, FFVI-FFIX and FFX+FFXI?)!
And, of course, we’re yet to receive official confirmation of the rumoured Team Ico HD Collection that would include PS2 titles Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.

Split/Second: Velocity developer, Black Rock Studios is developing a new racer for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The not-very-shocking news comes via a job ad on publisher, Disney Interactive's website.
The listing reads: "Black Rock Studio, a Disney Interactive Studio, is currently looking for an experienced Technical Art Director to join the team who are developing an unannounced game on Xbox 360 & PS3."
According to the listing the suitable candidate will have "a strong passion and expert knowledge for games of all genres but particularly in the Racing and driving genres".
Could this be a Split/Second sequel or an entirely new racer altogether?
Split/Second: Velocity scored solidly across the board with an 8 out of 10 from , 86 percent in GamesMaster and an 8.6 from our good selves.
Is a Split/Second sequel something you want to see?

Codemasters has promised fans of the Colin McRae: DiRT franchise that the third in the series will feature the very latest technology - possibly including 3D capability.
The title was outed last month by the firm - who revealed that it would be adding dynamic weather effects to the game.
However, it appears that won't be the last flashy trick up Codemasters' sleeve.
"We've never made any secret of our strategy to achieve market strength in the genre of racing," Codemasters CEO Rod Cousens told CVG.
"The approach will be that we'll annualise Formula One and alternate DiRT and GRID [one every two years]. And we'll alternate them because we want the experience to grow each time.
"Obviously, the way the games are written today, within that the design of the game will lend itself to online, and we're conscious of the fact that 3D is becoming a factor.
"And we're also conscious of the fact that games should deploy virtual goods trading opporutnties within them.
"Given that DiRT 3's out there on the drawing board, I'm sure we'll want to address most of those elements."
Sony revealed that Gran Turismo 5 would be getting the 3D treatment at E3 last week.

News via http://www.psp-hacks.com/2010/06/26/...ebrew-on-6-20/
Now before you jump the gun you should know this release is a work-in-progress… Well, the same can be said for the whole Half Byte Loader project. The point is revision 92 isn’t considered stable or reliable, unlike revision 85. So really if you’re looking for the latest features and want to experiment a little — get rev. 92. Otherwise if stability and getting your homebrew on is your concern — get rev. 85.
