Despite the usual internet headlines, Sony boss Howard Stringer has not just confirmed the release date of the PS3 in an interview with US entertainment bible Variety.
It's the usual case of Chinese whispers we have to report, with some sites taking a statement by the mag's writer - 'Sony will roll out the PS3 by year end, in time for the holidays' - and running with the quote as an actual confirmation of the PS3's release date from Stringer himself.
However, that statement wasn't actually a direct quote from Stringer. What the Sony boss actually said, was that if PS3 "delivers what everyone thinks it will, the game is up". Well it's challenging statement, but we don't exactly expect Microsoft to sell up and leave Dodge just yet.
Another interesting snippet from the Variety interview refers to the ongoing battle between Sony and Microsoft over next generation optical disk formats, with MS's HD-DVD competing against Sony's Blu-ray in a battle reminscent of the great VHS versus Betamax war.
Stringer observed: "Once Microsoft picked sides it was clear we were going to be in a battle royale". However the Sony boss also vowed, "We won't be stampeded [into making decisions] that are there forever."

Gary13579 has released a early wip release of his homebrew RPG, heres the info:
Here it is! The first version of my RPG for the PSP. This version doesn't include much, just a simple map/player engine with hints of Inn's and message-boxes. It works pretty well, and the framerate is nice, but I cannot seem to get MP3 support without overclocking and/or lagging. If you have a nice and optimized MP3 player, please please send me some code .

MPH has done it , he has released a new legal version of his Game Loader for the PSP, that allows those with the very Homebrew Friendly v1.50 PSPs to play games such as Grand Theft Auto (Which Require v2.0 firmware).
Heres the details from him:
"Here the game loader 1.1 with support umd.
Because i have no time for the moment, the multiplayers and sleep bugs are not corrected for the moment, it will be for the next version.
The compatibility is likely to be reduced because decoding is performed in the loader and because of the memory I am limited (64ko) to decipher prx but the next version will not have this constraint."
Heres the info from the readme
<blockquote>Firmware 2.00 installation :
----------------------------
You will need firmware 2.00 in files format, use psardump to obtain it or my firmware launcher and use the function to install a firmware.
Once that you have the files, create the mphgameloader folder has the root of your memory stick and copy flash0 (kd, vsh...) and flash1 folders inside.
Loader installation :
---------------------
Install loader (MPHGAMELOADER) like any psp application (PSP/GAME/) and copy mphloader.prx in the mphgameloader folder.
You will have the following structure of folders/files :
Memory stick
|
|- mphgameloader
|
|- mphloader.prx
|
|- flash0/ (with sub folders and files)
|- flash1/ (with sub folders and files)
|
|- PSP/
|
|- GAME/
|
|- MPHGAMELOADER
|- MPHGAMELOADER%
...
Launch gta :
------------
Put you umd of gta and then launch MPHGAMELOADER
Welcome to the gta world, 1.50 is not dead ;-)</blockquote>

Drakonite posted this news on his site:
I have just posted Xump for PS2 v1.06.1, a major bugfix release over the previous version. All known bugs with the PS2 port have now been fixed. This includes the issues with the music and menus, and it should now boot and run correctly on the very early Japanese PS2s.
A big thanks goes to Evilo. It's no secret that I have not been enjoying working with SDL, so my good friend Evilo volunteered and stepped up to get Xump working with sdl_mixer. Thanks Evilo!

SuccessHK have on their site posted quite a few new commercial releases for the PSP, one or two we may have covered before but most are new, heres the lot of em:
Blade Dancer Sennen no Yakusoku Jap ver.

Blade Dancer: Sennen no Yakusoku (also known as Blade Dancer: Lineage of Light) is a fantasy RPG featuring anime-style characters, animated movie sequences, 3D visuals and network play. You are taking the role as Shane, who is heading off to an island as part of your training. There you will meet Ferris, a girl who is in the midst of great trouble and needs help.
Blade Dancer includes fully 3D fields, with a battle system slightly different from normal random encounter systems -- strike a beast, and you'll end up entering battle. One of the main elements of the game is the "Crafting System," where you combine items that you have collected into new items. The game stores recipes for you, although the more adventurous will want to try out their own creations. The game also features networking systems for up to four players to connect together.

Pursuit Force Jap ver.

Sony Computer Entertainment puts you in the middle of high-speed chases as you race through city streets in dangerous pursuit of the criminal element. As a highway cop, you seize cars or motorbikes and engage in gun battles while in hot pursuit, jumping between vehicles and latching onto crook's cars while racing across the pavement at over 100 miles per hour! The first project from BigBig Studios (staffed by former members of Codemasters' TOCA and Colin McRae teams, and funded by coding house Evolution Studios), this project is an original title for the PlayStation Portable, combining character-based action and high-octane action on the road. Set across five distinct environments, Pursuit Force presents a variety of gameplay elements for each criminal case, including collect and follow assignments, high-speed pursuit, on-foot action, and aerial attacks.

FIFA Street 2 US ver.

Prove you have what it takes in four on four gameplay action. Humiliate your opponents with over-the-top juggling moves and all-new gamebreakers that allow you to win a game like never before. Beat the best in the world by traveling to new International locations ranging from the famous Westway Leisure Centre in London to the beautiful beachside of Brazil. Featuring all new authentic tricks, FIFA Street 2 provides new gameplay experiences by making over the top moves and skills even bigger in this fast paced sequel. Take to the streets, unleash your tricks, and humble your rivals with or without the ball.

Valkyrie Profile Lenneth Jap ver

As the two major god factions war, the main god Odin sneds the female god of war, Valkyrie, to find human souls to fuel the conflict. Valkyrie collects many human souls and trains them. But her sealed memories begin to return and she now has doubts about Odin’s true intentions. How will the conflict develop?
This production is the port of “Valkyrie Profile?released on the PS in 1999. The sotry is based on Scandinavian myth, allowing the player to play as the female god of war Valkyrie. The players ponders the meaning of gods?will and humanity.

Derby Time 2006 Jap ver.

The second of Sony's portable horse racing simulation, including real horses and riders who appear under their actual names. Derby Time 2006 adds a number of new features over the original. You can now interact more closely with your horse, massaging it and giving it special food. The original allowed you to equip items to your horse; in 2006, you can equip up to three items from an expanded list. The game's scenario mode has seen some big changes, as you now select the scenario you'd like to play next. Included are "VS Scenarios," which take you through the storyline and "Free Scenarios," which have nothing to do with the main story.

Street Supremacy US ver.

Street Supremacy is designed to bring the super-charged world of street racing to life on PSP. In the game's unique "Team Battle" mode, players win the race by depleting their rival's Spirit Points (SP), which are decreased by contact with walls, cars and by falling behind other racers. Divided into 15 areas, two teams compete to dominate the game map through individual races between the different players. In addition to Street Supremacy's stunning racing action, the cars in the game can also be modified to add an edge to the duels.
Street Supremacy was released in Japan as part of Genki's Shutokou Battle (Tokyo Xtreme Racer) series. The North American version improves on the first PSP release with the addition of two-player wireless multiplayer racing.

MX vs. ATV Unleashed: On the Edge US ver.

This portable entry in the series continues THQ's long-line of motocross games, which have included the Ricky Carmichael series, MX Superfly, and the most recent MX vs. ATV Unleashed. MX vs. ATV Unleashed: On the Edge allows gamers to explore immense free-world areas, compete with an array of vehicle types and vie for off-road supremacy in a multitude of racing modes. The franchise's Rhythm Racing physics engine returns for realistic riding. PSP system multiplayer will allow four players to challenge each other wirelessly.

Ys The Ark of Napishtim US ver.

Washed ashore on an uncharted island, Adol Christin begins a new journey in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim. Our red-headed hero must fight deadly monsters and menacing bosses with a variety of sword combinations, special attacks and magical spells to uncover the secrets that lie in Canaan's mysterious whirlpools.
The first Ys on the PSP system, gamers-on-the-go can experience the sights, sounds, and storytelling that sets Ys apart from other action RPGs. Additionally, players can unlock new mini-games and databases revealing the secrets of Ys, as well as listen to the game's complete soundtrack as well as view movies and trailers in the Ys Media Player.

Generation of Chaos US ver.

Battles for world domination have been dragging on for generations. Now Allen of Zodia rises to end all wars and bring peace to the world. After the opening story, the player uses the strategy mode to build and strengthen the kingdom. In the beginning, the kingdom is small and weak. However, as you progress through the game, the player can conquer neighboring kingdoms and stretch its ruling powers throughout the land of Duke. Unlike other RPGs for the PSP(TM), Generation of Chaos features massive, sixty-character battles as well as sneaky espionage tactics.

Thats the lot and thats a mass of PSP Commercial Releases, new to the region (US or Japan), more info on them all at SuccessHK

Finally some great news, im sure you know how disapointed a lot of people are and by that im talking about hardcore homebrewers when MPH released the ISO loader , but it looks like hes releasing a new UMD loader that will play games like GTA and others on V1.5 Firmware, this time you will need the original UMD to play it. Now that is great news.
Using this method we may be able to play all new games on the Homebrew friendly v1.5 firmware, more news as it happens

Fish has released a great new Pong game for the PSP, heres the info he posted:
<blockquote>I know, Pong is admittedly a bit of a n00bish topic for a game, but it's simple and more than anything gave me a goal to connect all my doodlings together for, as such it only took a day to write, hopefully its polished enough.
If anyone has any feedback I'd like to know, particularly re non 1.0 PSPs, as I've not got an upgraded one to test on.
Exciting Features:
:: 2 Players on one PSP
:: Twiddly bits: Points / Balls Spin / Ball Acceleration / Player Speed
:: Futuristic AI (for "futuristic", read "basic" )
:: Attract mode
:: 1-Bit Colour
:: ROCK STEADY Framerate @ 600 FPS. ish.
:: Silent operation (ie. I've not done the SFX yet)
:: Argument causing menu system for social gaming.
:: (I think I'm running out of exciting features to tell you about...)
:: Screenshot capability!
:: Erm, I think that's it. </blockquote>

1up has an expansive piece up exploring everything they know about the PlayStation 3. They cover rumours, prices, technology, and the limited information currently out there on upcoming games. From the article: "While the hard facts are still tough to nail down, the general consensus is that the PlayStation 3 is the most powerful of the three next-generation systems, although probably not by as much of a margin as Sony would like us to think. The arguments for the technical strengths of the PS3 go into CPU floating-point capabilities and the difficulties surrounding programming for parallel architectures, but the long and short of it is that whether or not the advantages of the PS3 are apparent will depend on developers' ability to utilize the PlayStation 3's unique architecture.
