Sony announces booths at event will showcase "latest hardware and development tools for the next-generation console" and demos for portable; no games mentioned.
In February, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that Phil Harrison, chief of its Worldwide Studios, would deliver a keynote address at the 2006 Game Developers Conference. While the title of that speech, "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box," promised a look at the company's next-generation console, it was unclear if any actual hardware would be on display. Those doubts were exacerbated last week, when Sony announced that the PS3 would go on sale worldwide in November 2006 instead of its previous "spring" launch window.
On the eve of Harrison's address, however, Sony has announced that there will definitively be some form of PS3 hardware on display at the event. In a carefully worded statement, the company proclaimed that, as part of its "widespread presence" at GDC 2006, it would have booths showcasing its next-gen console. Sony promised "PlayStation 3 kiosks, showcasing the latest hardware and development tools for the next-generation console, including Unreal Engine, COLLADA, PlayStation Graphics Library (PSGL) and performance analysis tools" would be on-hand at its booth.
Sony promised to hold "demonstrations of games that highlight the new and unique features of the PlayStation platform" at its booth. It did not identify any PS3 titles as being present, however, preferring to issue comments of a broader nature. "The Game Developers Conference gives us an opportunity to collaborate with the development community and demonstrate new technology, business models, and our vision that will help fuel the growth of the computer entertainment industry," said Harrison in a statement. As of press time, Sony had not responded to requests to clarify whether PS3 games would be on display at GDC.
Sony did say several PlayStation Portable games would be on playable display, including Loco Roco, Me and My Katamari, and Field Commander. Indeed, the company promised a whole range of PSP functionality would be shown off at its booth, including the PSP Spot game-download service, as well as peripherals such as the PSP headset.

As visitors to this year's Game Developers Conference eagerly await Phil Harrison's keynote speech later today, Sony has confirmed that PS3 hardware will go on show at the event.
In a statement, the company that there will be "PlayStation 3 kiosks, showcasing the latest hardware and development tools for the next-generation console, including Unreal Engine, COLLADA, PlayStation Graphics Library (PSGL) and performance analysis tools."
Sony also said that the booths would host "demonstrations of games that highlight the new and unique features of the PlayStation platform" - but stopped short of saying whether any of those games would be for the PS3.
However, it was confirmed that several PSP games will be playable at the show, including Loco Roco, Field Commander and Me & My Katamari. Sony will also use GDC to demonstrate the PSP Spot game download service, and new accessories for the handheld such as the PSP headset.
The speech by Phil Harrison, Sony's head of Worldwide Studios, is set to be one of the highlights of GDC. Titled 'PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box', it is scheduled to take place at 10.30am (6.30pm GMT) today - visit GamesIndustry.biz for up to the minute coverage.

Sony's announced that World Tour Soccer 2 is due out on PlayStation Portable in June - just in time for you to lose your PSP down the back of a German stadium, presumably.
While Sony's World Tour Soccer PSP game was never going to dethrone Pro Evolution Soccer when it came out, we did find ourselves really quite enamoured with its "challenge" mode, which offered a new take on the whole concept of "arcade football" by actually giving you points for stringing together passes and scoring incredible, John-Arne-Riise-against-Birmingham-7-0-you-knew-I'd-fit-it-in-somewhere style long-range shots. Sensibly, it's this area that WTS2 seems to be keenest to expand upon.
The game will be split into World Tour and Medal modes, which will allow you to work toward unlocking new teams, game modes and All Star teams, but there are a total of 11 game modes overall - and most of the challenge-esque ones are asking for you to discipline yourself in certain ways.
Classic challenge sticks with the original formula, while all-rounder rewards you for bringing in team-mates; time attack is about scoring points against the clock; checkpoint is about your ball-distribution skills; and shot clock is about scoring quickly. If it's anything like the original, you'll compete for bronze, silver and gold medals - and probably get quite addicted to doing so.
On top of that your skills at the actual football will improve - and then you can take on other players in four-player ad hoc and two-player wireless infrastructure modes. Sony's London-based development team has also built in eight new stadiums and 71 international teams.
Given that one of our major criticisms of WTS1 was that the challenge mode was over so quickly, it all sounds good to us. We'll let you know how the game turns out - you can see how it's shaping up in screenshots elsewhere on the site.

Sam Fisher's been gone for a while, and there's still months to wait before he re-emerges on consoles in Double Agent. Luckily we have this bite-sized PSP adventure to tide us over until its bigger brother arrives, and it's looking rather swish.
As you can see from our amazing video technology in the top right corner - on which expense is spared - Splinter Cell Essentials is looking like an um, essential purchase for owners of Sony's sleek handheld.
The game will reveal the origin of everyone's favourite tri-goggled super-spy, from his military beginnings as a US Navy Seal to the Third Echelon stealth-dynamo we know today.
Splinter Cell Essentials sneaks into the shops on April 7th.

The good folks over at the Chicago Tribune have paid tribute to the PSP's first year in the domestic market. For all the love and criticism that Sony's little black wonder gets, there is no denying that the PSP's stats and accomplishments are rather impressive:
" I love my Sony PlayStation Portable, which turns 1 year old on Friday. It boasts more than 100 games ($20 to $40 each) that get better all the time (Must-haves include new releases "Daxter," "Syphon Philter: Dark Mirror" and the still-good "Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories). It has about 350 movies and TV shows ("Chappelle's Show: Season 1" makes bus rides bearable). And it stores music and photos, as well as surfs the Web via your home wireless network (psp.connect.com has details) or Wi- Fi hot spots (JiWire.com will find one near you)."

If the official Katamari Damacy website is to be believed, then today marks the (North American) release of the series final installment, Me and My Katamari for the PSP. The obvious question is how will the lack of a second analogue nub affect the game's mechanics? The short answer — for fans reeling from the recent announcement — is that it doesn't matter. Anyone itchin' to roll on the go is going to re-learn the controls. But will nagging load screens and recycled material sour the sweet farewell?
GameBrink (88/100) - "Due to the controls and the repetitive level design, the game won't be stealing the spotlight of the PS2 titles, but at the same time it's still a great game that can now be played on the go." [JPN Import]
GameSpot (80/100) - "The paltry number of levels in Me and My Katamari proves to be its biggest shortcoming, as the game otherwise does a pretty phenomenal job of re-creating the Katamari Damacy experience on the PSP."
1UP (70/100) - "While it may be the most lackluster chapter to date, it's still pretty entertaining — but only in small doses. Just be aware that the price is too high and the replayability is too low."

Brunni has released a GBA Emulator of Sorts for the PSP, heres what he posted:
There is another project I began, just to show the PSP's power (and OSLib).
Basically, it would be a GBA emulator, but it's not really one for now as it doesn't emulates the CPU yet (so you cannot run another ROM than mine for now, which is recompiled, and writes into emulator registers, and emulated through a separate process), but just basic GBA hardware, and GPU is far from being complete (the 4 BGs and their modes are displayed, basic sprite support without rotation & alpha blending, no HBLANK interrupts) and sound hardware is not emulated. The GBA display processor is emulated fully using the PSP hardware.
This is not a port of an existing emulator, I wrote all myself (it's why it takes lot of time and is far from being complete, but runs at a good speed for now).
So, this is a challenge, maybe it will give nothing at the end, but it shows what we can do with oslib ^^
Controls: cross, circle, joypad.
Very Curious Release, and one that you should try and comment on , Basically its a Single Game GBA Emu for the PSP

Fans of conventional 2D role-playing games with frilly plots to do with Ice Demons and things will be pleased to hear that Ignition Entertainment is planning to publish PoPoLoCrois for PSP this spring.
The first in the series to release outside Japan, PoPoLoCrois sees ten-year-old Pietro setting off on a quest to save the world from the evil Ice Demon (aha), and uses the familiar old random battle approach to combat - with a slight nod to tactical RPGs on the battle screen.
It's had a fairly mixed reception in the US, where it's published by Agetec, in terms of review scores, but that seems to have more to do with its lack of exciting spangly 3D graphical innovations than the fact it's bad or anything - trad-RPG types might want to keep an eye on it.

News from Lik Sang
The Katamari series is brilliantly unique Japanese insanity at its best, and this week came the US version! Sadly though, this may be the last entry into the series as last week Namco took down the official site and announced that Keita Takahashi and the team had moved onto other things. The concept behind the game is that playing as the Prince under The King of All Cosmos, you run around pushing a giant ball made of houses, cars, cows, people and generally anything else you roll this round monstrosity into. Eventually it becomes so huge it's sent into space to replace a star, and the people of the games world, well those that aren't rolled up in it we assume, love it.

Improving on the PS2 originals, along with an all new storyline, this PSP release features dynamic levels that change based on the time and season. Ever changing paths also ensure the game is different each time you play, and there's four player multi-player battles. Lastly there's a bonus side scrolling 2D mini game included, which can be seen here. Due to arrive today, Me & My Katamari will show you exactly what players of the PS2 titles go head over heels for, and it's the type of game you'll be dying to show your mates... so get the ball rolling by placing your order now! [Singing] Paaaaah, pah, pah, pah, pah, pah, paaah, Katamari Damaccyyyyyy... [end of chorus]

News from Lik Sang
Ooo-oh! Those weapon wielding Worms are back, and unlike their less popular 3D titles of late, here on the NDS and PSP they are back where they belong; in 2D gameplay. Multiplayer was always the best way to enjoy the cult series, and here which ever system you have you can engage in wireless warfare with just one copy of the game between four players! With the DS's touch screen too, you can see a radar of the whole map down below, and of course quickly make your choice of weapons.

There's six landscapes to destruct, including London, Hawaii, a Jungle, an Iceberg, Hell and even Outer Space. Every level is randomly generated, but using a 10 digit code system you can save those you loved. As always there's plenty more to customize too, from the names and voices of your worms, to their gravestones, or one of five CPU controlled personalities. Beyond a quick match, regular game and multiplayer, challenge mode has you completing a series of tasks, which is great for newbies or those who want to hone their skills. With a unique sense of humor and clever mix of action and strategy, Worms is a classic that never gets old, and both the US and Euro editions will be in stock before the week is up.
