With all the PS3 delay news flying around lately, it seems that a certain big sequel for the Xbox 360 may have creeped back onto the 2006 release window.
According to Next Generation, a "lead analyst" from Tokyo is claiming that "big-hitting titles" for the first-moving 360 could be targeted at the PS3 launch "just to sabotage it." He stated that the release of Halo 3 ("timed to PS3") would be "quite damaging for Sony" as well.
Well, a preemptive launch of Halo 3 would certainly serve as a distraction to Sony's next-gen launch plans, but people who really want a PS3 probably won't be deterred by Microsoft's premiere FPS appearing around the same time their favorite console does. Gears of War most likely won't stop PS3 fanboys, either. An unexpectedly early release (of either title) would certainly prove to be a perfect holiday present for 360 owners, however. Competition is grand.

Right after Sony ended the speculation surrounding the PS3's launch date, they announced that Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom would be among the expected launch titles. Will it be a Halo 3 killer? Unlikely, but it's nice to see a good old fashioned hack-and-slash RPG headed to a next gen platform. No additional Norrath sequels have been announced, and the Dark Alliance series was left hanging after the unfortunate demise of Black Isle Studios.
So what enhancements will PS3 owners have to look forward to in this iteration of Legends? The game will feature 7.1 audio, online multiplayer, and downloadable content via Sony's new online service. As an added bonus, sci-fi scribe Keith Baker (D&D, Star Wars novels) will pen the Dark Kingdom story.

Analysts mostly upbeat, third-party publishers' shares spike on news that the next-generation console will arrive in time for the holidays.
If you were a third-party publisher spending tens of millions developing a PlayStation 3 game, the last few weeks must have been pretty nerve-wracking. As the year has progressed, more and more analysts and industry insiders were predicting that the next-generation console would miss its spring 2006 launch date and instead launch in the fall. With Sony staying resolutely mum on the matter, some analysts went one step further, saying the PS3 might not launch until 2007 in the US and Europe--missing the all-important holiday season.
So when Sony announced earlier today that the PS3 will go on sale worldwide in November, many major publishers breathed a sigh of relief. So, too, did their stockholders. On the Nasdaq, Electronic Arts gained $1.51 (2.85 percent) to hit $54.38, Activision rose $0.72 (5.5 percent) to $13.93, THQ jumped $1.06 (4.3 percent) to $25.9, and Take-Two Interactive rose $0.42 cents (2.6 percent) to $16.69.
For its part, Sony's stock rose on the New York Stock Exchange, adding $0.17 (0.37 percent) to close at $46.63. However, the announcement came after the close of the Japanese Nikkei market, on which Sony stock slid 1.8 percent to end the day at 5,470 yen ($46.57).
Overall, most major investment firms' analysts were pleased with the PS3 delay and Sony's other big announcement, a price drop for its PSP. "We view a worldwide November launch as positive," UBS' Mike Wallace said in a report. "In our view, recent fears that the PS3 launch might have been delayed until as late as 2007 have been overblown. The European launch is earlier than expected, as we had been expecting a launch in Europe in Q1 2007."
"While this launch date is a delay for Japan, it is a clear positive for our U.S. publishing stocks, given recent speculation about a possible pushout into Q1 2007," said Shawn Milne of Friedman Billings Ramsey. Milne also pointed out Sony's supply projections as boon. "Sony indicated that it expects 1 million unit monthly production capacity at launch and 6 million units by Q1 2007 (well above Microsoft’s Xbox 360 target of 2.5M in its first 90 days). We were expecting 500k-1M at launch in 4Q for the US."
However, analysts warned of similarly bumpy retail road come November. "We think the PS3 launching this year is good news longer-term for the game stocks, but near term, the limited hardware quantities could lead to some earnings misses in Q4 this year," said Wallace. Milne was blunter in his assessment. "We expect shortages and another choppy holiday," he said, adding, "this is clearly not going to be a cheap box ($400-$500 likely)."
However, some analysts were less upbeat about the PS3 delay. One analyst who wished to remain anonymous said that the move is "giving its rival, Microsoft's Xbox 360, a two-holiday season advantage." Hiroshi Kamide, analyst at KBC Securities in Tokyo, told Reuters that the delay could come back to haunt Sony. "The Xbox 360 will now have had a year's head start," he said. "The danger is that [Microsoft] could target big-hitting titles at the launch of the PS3 just to sabotage it."

Ginka posted this:
Here's my first release of psp software. It's a port of cal3d http://cal3d.sourceforge.net and a custom 3D demo of the cally skeleton model for the psp. I've tested it under 1.5 and everything works fine. It _should_ work under 2.x since I'm only using pspgl and freetype with no net/usb/kernel access - so please let me know.
Get the demo from here: http://207.210.78.49/cal3D-RC1.zip
Since this library might be useful for others, I'd like to get the new demo and required patches into the main cal3d cvs tree. I'll drop them a line and see if they're interested. However, I will be making further changes to the source to add psp features, so at some point I might need to fork it... hope not though. And thanks to zilt for the webspace.

Going by the working title "PlayStation Network Platform," Sony has announced that the basic level of its online service will be free (at least at first).
While the company's "Live-killer" will readily support the PS3 at launch in November, it is not known to what extent the "PNP" (er, "PSNP"?) will support the PS2 and PSP.
What are supported, however, are voice/video chat, messaging, matchmaking, ranking, game data uploading/downloading, shopping, content downloading, micro payments, subscriptions, and entitlement (i.e., user access) management. All of this will be tied together with a Live-like user login ID/handle name. Hello, 360...

March 15th, 2006, 18:04 Posted By: wraggster
The PlayStation 3 is set to launch in North America, Asia and Europe in early November this year, Sony Computer Entertainment boss Ken Kutaragi has announced, with the firm committed to shipping six million units by the end of March 2007.
Kutaragi was speaking at the PlayStation business briefing in Tokyo, where the firm is outlining its plans for the videogames business over the coming year to an audience of media, analysts and third-party publishing partners.
He told the briefing that the PS3 will be launched in early November in all three major global territories, confounding industry and analyst expectations of a staggered release schedule which would see the European launch delayed to 2007.
From launch onwards, Sony plans to ship a million units a month of the PlayStation 3 - with six million units to be on the market by the end of its financial year in March 2007, indicating that the company plans to have up to two million units ready for day one.
It's an ambitious plan, but the firm certainly has time on its side - having moved its launch target from "spring 2006" to November, and with reports indicating that manufacturing of the console could begin as soon as June, Sony has plenty of time to ramp up the manufacture process and build up stock of the system pre-launch.
Sony also today confirmed that the final development hardware for PlayStation 3 will roll out in June, which tends to support the claim that manufacturing will also start then, as final development hardware requires almost all of the components of the final consumer hardware to be completed.
However, the November target is likely to be the subject of some speculation for months to come - especially given Sony's track record with such ambitious worldwide launch targets in the form of the PlayStation Portable, which was originally due to launch globally at the end of 2004, but ended up not arriving in America until the second quarter of 2005, and didn't launch in Europe until nine months later, at the beginning of September 2005.

March 15th, 2006, 18:03 Posted By: wraggster
Further details of the PlayStation 3 have emerged from Sony's business briefing in Tokyo today, with the firm revealing that the device's hard drive will not be optional, and that a free online service will roll out for the launch of the console.
It had previously been thought that the PS3 hard drive would be an optional device, as the hard drive on the Xbox 360 is, but Kutaragi was adamant today that the component, which will ship at 60Gb but can be upgraded, is required by the console.
As expected, the drive will allow the PlayStation 3 to act as a home media server, which can store and manipulate various different types of media that can then be accessed from other devices. However, it will also be capable of running a version of the Linux operating system, and will be key to the online service the company is planning.
That service, which is clearly designed as a direct competitor to Microsoft's Xbox Live, will be entirely free and will be available from the launch of the console, offering standard features such as game lobbies, player matching, voice chat and a variety of commercial features including software which will be distributed over the network and can be stored on the hard drive.
This latter feature is particularly interesting in light of the information received from development sources by GamesIndustry.biz earlier this week, indicating that Sony may be planning digital distribution of some of its PS2 and PSone back catalogue on PS3.
The company also this morning confirmed once again that PlayStation 3 will be entirely backwards-compatible with PS2 and PSone titles, and revealed that the new console will be able to upscale those games into high definition video formats.

March 15th, 2006, 18:02 Posted By: wraggster
Another news article (yeah some stuff is being repeated but hey its a big news day) this time from Gamesindustry:
Sony has a host of updates to the PlayStation Portable planned over the coming months, with an EyeToy camera, a video and voice chat service, a GPS receiver and the ability to download and play a range of PSone games all on the way.
The updates were announced at the firm's PlayStation business briefing this morning, and indicate Sony's commitment to turning the PSP into a de facto portable network access device as well as an entertainment device.
The EyeToy camera, which is silver and will connect to the console's USB port, will be launched in September along with an EyeToy Play title and video chat system, while free video and voice-over-IP services will appear in October.
The GPS system, meanwhile, will be supported by games as well as by standard global positioning applications - with a new Everybody's Golf title set to be one of the launch titles for the GPS peripheral.
One of the most intriguing updates to the system, however, comes in the form of a new digital distribution service which Sony is planning, which will allow users to download games and applications directly to their memory cards.
An early use of the system will be to distribute a range of classic PSone games, which will be playable on the PlayStation Portable. No details have yet been announced regarding which games will appear in the range, and whether they will need to be extensively re-coded to appear on the system.
Finally, at the more minor end of the spectrum, Sony has also announced that it intends to launch a firmware update for the PSP in the near future which will introduce Macromedia Flash compatibility to the web browser used in the device.

The New York Times is reporting that Sony's press conference has confirmed the delay of the PS3, which is now slated to come out in November. More interestingly, the article claims that PS3 will ship with a 60-gig hard drive, built-in network card, and Linux!" Serious stuff here, with Sony's shares falling on the delay confirmation. There was a lot more news handed out at the conference than just the delay. Next Generation has details from Ken Kutaragi's 10 Point Breakdown. From the NYT article: "'We were discussing selling it in September, and some even said put it out in July,' Mr. Kutaragi said. Some analysts were immediately skeptical of this explanation, saying Sony needed to get the console out as soon as possible to combat Microsoft's head start, and the expected release this year of Nintendo's next game console, Revolution. They said Sony may be trying to buy time to bring down the production cost of key components, particularly untested technologies like Blu-ray and Cell. While Mr. Kutaragi did not reveal a price on Wednesday, analysts say Sony will likely try to sell PlayStation 3 for about $500."

News from Lik Sang
Your parents need a vacation, they just don't know it yet. Additionally, it's Britney Spears' records and headphones for your little sister and then... call your friends over, reunite the band and rock the house like you guys have never before. Two guitars and drums linked is the motto of months to come now, after Konami released their fantastic Arcade-gone-Home-port combo pack Guitar Freaks V & DrumMania V, which we received to stock today. Boy, this is gonna be great! Crank the volume up, grab your dedicated gaming gear (we just love Konami for their official accessories) and shake the walls with close to 50 new blasting songs (270+ tunes for Guitar Freaks alone)! Beef soup and TV schedule were yesterday, time to go wild now: wear whatever makes you turn into a Riff-plucking Guitar God or Drumstick wielding Hi-Hat Maniac, even if that means you have to unearth that retro AC/DC shirt once more. Konami has brought two of their most popular rythm-based music titles together in one package again, a glorious event for all Bemani fans and gamers who feel they're about to burst into a Music legend themselves... but always lacked the proper means for that. Worry no longer, we got your budding career covered; at least as far as a brilliant virtual stage goes, where you can get high on band life vibe, Konami style.
Guitar Freaks V & DrumMania V is shipping within 24 hours now for US$ 68.90 only. All preorders are already been taken care of. As with all import games at Lik Sang, these ship free globally, due to our popular Free Shipping Worldwide promotion.

Sony's announced that its next Formula One game is due out in June WAIT COME BACK! There's something interesting about this one! Studio Liverpool's making the PS2 and PSP versions, and apparently you can compete cross-platform. In other words, if you've got a PS2 version you can play online against someone who has the PSP one. That wasn't to say that Formula One games are boring, by the way. Don't cry.
F1 06 is due out in June, then, and features 2006 drivers/car/teams/circuits/rules/hats probably. There's an 18-race season mode playable online, classic F1 cars to unlock, and the option to play as chief engineer in career mode, apparently. Presumably you switch to the driver for races, unless it's all about "stealthing" Schumacher on the grid and leaping in his car before anyone notices (it isn't).
06 will also include a pressure system which sees you trying to force AI mistakes, prompting big old "race incidents". There'll be a new physics system, and car tuning options that won't rely on an intimate knowledge of all the particulars.
