Killzone: Liberation is an all new, action-packed installment in the Killzone series, and features a new intelligent 3rd-person camera system. Dream Games is a new weekly column where we explore a game we'd love to see on the PSP. Feel free to check in, and comment, every week.
Soul Calibur III
The Soul Calibur franchise is considered one of the best fighting series ever. With a large roster of characters, some genuinely interesting weapons and moves, and a great gameplay system, Soul Calibur has it all. After making a brief multiplatform appearance in Soul Calibur II, the third Soul Calibur went exclusively to Sony's PlayStation 2.
Why PSP?
Namco squeezed all of Tekken 5, and then some, into the tiny PSP. The impressive graphics and enhanced functionality of Dark Resurrection proves that Namco is quite capable of delivering a truly full-fledged fighting game on Sony's portable. The single-player features of Soul Calibur III were mostly bashed by critics, but they might just work on the PSP: the short missions the player must complete are ideal for gaming on the go. Also, the character customization feature doesn't have to go to waste on the PSP; the use of ad-hoc or Infrastructure features can make creating characters worthwhile. While true Infrastructure multiplayer may be too much to ask for, sharing ghost data a la Dark Resurrection may prove to be quite the hit. Imagine: data exchanges that allow you to play against a friend's unique character. Undoubtedly, Soul Calibur III on PSP can become the definitive portable fighting game of all time.
Is it possible?
Tekken 5 has sold more than 300,000 copies worldwide on the PSP. While not an overwhelming success, that's still an impressive figure (for a port!). Once the game enters Greatest Hits status, it will undoubtedly sell a lot more. There's a demand for good fighters on Sony's portable, and I doubt Namco will want to miss out on such a great opportunity. I hope you're reading this, Namco.

Developers at Starbreeze have been hard at work on The Darkness, hoping to keep the quality of their titles up to snuff. Following the surprisingly well-received Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay for the XBox, we don't blame them for wanting to create something just as fun. The game's scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2007 for multiple consoles, boasting a step away from generic FPS action and throwing in superhero traits and elements -- it's based on a comic book, after all.
Now, you can read the interview to learn more about the game's plot and such (but we don't like ruining it even a little bit) or you can stay here and we'll tell you what makes the Blu-ray/PS3 version of the game pretty neat. Denby Grace of Take-Two says: "Blu-ray offers us around 25GB to play with, so we're looking to license old TV shows, adverts, and cartoons to build entire TV channels in the game. You can actually turn on the TVs in the game and watch a film, watch a TV series, anything you want really. It's a little bit gimmicky, but at the same time, it's a really cool feature." So, um, yeah... that's an interesting choice. Still, kind of cool.
As far as multiplayer goes, there's not much talked about in the sense of modes or weaponry specifics, but there is a distinct Aliens Vs. Predator feel to it -- one type of creature you can play as will be able to climb walls, attack with claws, see in the dark... where the humans can use a multitude of guns and scream when they get pounced by... The Darkness!

If you live in Europe, raise your hand. Okay. If you live in Europe and you've been able to pre-order a PlayStation 3, raise your hand. Hmm, significantly less. This may be because many of the European retailers such as Game, GameStation, HMV, Virgin Megastores, Comet, PC World, Toys 'R' Us and Dixons are holding out on the pre-order madness until they know what the allocation of PS3 units will be. There will be a logistics meeting between Sony and these retailers in the coming weeks to discuss just that.
You may be thinking "why? Why no pre-order when launch is less than two months away?" but the answer is quite simple. Sony is learning from their mistakes, as well as Nintendo's. As well as Microsoft's. We're talking about letting retailers jump the gun on orders and have to fight to meet the needs that are given to them. They're changing from a type of pull strategy to a push. Sony wants to be in complete control for this launch. Which is good. Unless you'd rather pre-order a PS3, only to get a call the day before launch where a young employee's cracking voice tells you over the phone "uh, sorry, you'll have to wait until the next shipment". So, no worries. You'll probably be able to pre-order mid-February.

Hi
A new build of IceTea is available
This one focus on usability:
-added gameid autodection, thanks to SeattleMan from www.sonyindex.com for providing me his PS1 game database
-added progress bar to iso extraction/eboot compilation dialog, so you actually see the progress :P
-fixed glitch which made the windows explorer think iso extraction/eboot compilation dialog crashed when in reality it only did some heavy computing :P
It's also much smoother now to navigate the gui while extracting iso/creating eboot
What is IceTea?
IceTea allows you to convert your old PSX CD's for use in the Sony PSP system
with the OE firmwares present.
It is also capable of creating the corresponding ingame manuals as well as
customizing the menu appearance.
You may also re-extract the ISO from your converted games.
and somehow I forgot to say last time (it was clear to me) that it has the CDDA support built in by Tinnus and the proper iso extraction by flatwhatson (no padding, extracted iso size should be the same as the one it was created from)
As always released under the GPL
Source can be grabbed via svn or via download section the next days
Provided binary should work from Win98 to Windows Vista 32bit (no .net framework required)
http://downloads.sourceforge.net/ice...se_mirror=kent
YOU NEED TO HAVE 3.03 OE-C INSTALLED ON YOUR PSP TO USE THE EBOOTS GENERATED BY THIS PROGRAM
for anything else read the readme

A console that looks like a grill needs one thing: Tasty sauce. Akihabara retailer Sangatsu Usagi is selling unofficial PLAYSTATION 3 sauce. (Actually, a sticker has been placed over Bulldog branded sauce.) The phony product lambasts Sony for recent goofs. It features an illustration of Ken Kutaragi, notice of the SIXAXIS Emmy fiasco and the promised one million shipment number. Below that it says, "However, The Source Was Sony." There are even 20GB and 60GB versions of the sauce priced accordingly at 399 yen (marked down from 499 yen) and 599 yen (US $3.20 and $4.93). We always kinda thought the PS3 looked like a Victorian waffle iron, so do eagerly wait the mock-up syrup bottles.

PlayStation-centric US magazine PSM has put PS3 and Xbox 360 through a series of rigorous tests in a "definitive head-to-head comparison," and has come out with what must be a surprising result for subscribers: the next-gen console war is a dead heat.
PSM offers a balanced case for pledging your allegiance to either platform, even roping in the editor-in-chief of the US Official Xbox Magazine to defend Xbox 360. Although, with one section pointing out that "PS3 wins if... You're a loner who doesn't plan to use community features much," it seems the barbed comments have been reserved for PS3.
After admitting that "360 is more impressive [in terms of having 'big' games]" and the Xbox interface "offers a lot more functionality than PS3's," we had to double check the flannel panel to make sure that Peter Moore hadn't sneaked a spot as the month's special guest writer.

A videogame hardware/tech developer has created technology that introduces rumble to PS3's SixAxis controller.
SplitFish GameWare Inc. describes its tech - which is called SensorFX - as "a new dynamic force feedback system" and explains it was designed "to insure compliant operation with the new tilt, motion and directional sensor technologies currently found in the next generation game consoles."
It continues: "The potential interference on the Sony PS3 SIXAXIS Controller caused by rotating mass force feedback systems such as Immersion's Rotating Mass Patent, required us to approach the solution from a completely new direction".
The company says that SensorFX, which "uses no moving parts to produce meaningful sensory feedback", can either be sold as an add-on for existing controllers or be built-in. The add-on version of SensorFX is plugged into the PS3 controller via USB, it explains.
And SplitFish has give an example of how SensorFX 'feels' in games: "...a gamer playing a race game can feel variations in pulse, strength and collision location and to feel intensity differences between a smooth guardrail swipe and a full frontal slam into a wall."
"The patent pending SensorFX has two modes, one for games that have force feedback support already built in and the other mode that relies on motion tilt sensing and button use and other actions to trigger the SensorFX tactile feedback. SplitFish will work with video game publishers and next-generation hardware manufacturers in an effort to establish standards for this directional force feedback technology", the company's announcement on SensorFX concludes.

Xbox 360's gangster-'em-up Saints Row is definitely heading to PS3.
In a brief announcement today on its website, THQ has stated that the PS3 version is due this spring, confirming previous rumour that the game was heading to Sony's latest console.
Saints Row on PS3 "will feature character customisation, the freedom to progress through multiple storylines and side-missions, unique activities and a variety of single and multiplayer modes - supporting players online via the PlayStation Network," the publisher added.
Saints Row developer Volition may well be adding new content to the game for the PS3 release, but THQ's UK arm was unable to confirm such at the time of writing.

Sony Computer Entertainment of America spokesperson Dave Karraker has told the New York Times that, "The frenzy we saw at the holidays has subsided a bit."
Shortly after Christmas it was possible to walk into a US retailer and pick up a PS3 without having to pre-order one, or get up at the crack of dawn and stand in line waiting for the shops to open.
Then we had reports of Japanese retailers knocking 20 percent off the PS3 price in Japan to try and shift units. Clearly this is down to the fact that PS3 is still waiting for a killer app. Karraker added that the company is selling all 100,000 PS3 units it's shipping into the US each week, reports Next Gen.
He also took time to have a pop at Nintendo, saying "Wii could be considered an impulse buy more than anything else." Thanks for that.

There's confusion over the release date of the recently-renamed Unreal Tournament 3 today, after Midway sent out a new fact sheet listing the PlayStation 3 version of the shooter down for release in 2008, with PC and Xbox 360 versions still penned for the second half of 2007.
CVG has since contacted Midway who told us that as of now the release dates of all three UT3 versions are standing firm at the seocnd half of 2007, so it looks like the PS3 version might not be delayed after all.
Still, if the PS3 version does slip it might not be too surprising that the 360 port exits Epic's doors first, considering that the company already has a fully optimised version of the Unreal Engine 3 left over from Gears of War development.
We'll let you know what happens either way.

More evidence that the latest Grand Theft Auto, Vice City Stores is heading to PS2 has surfaced this morning, after it cropped up on a listing for the home console on the official PlayStation website.
Rockstar is keeping shtump over the rumours for the time being and is yet to return out calls, though considering this isn't the first time VCS PS2 has been mentioned (it previously appeared on the American ratings board ESRB website before being promptly removed), and that previous handheld entry Liberty City Stories also made it over to PS2, it's likely we'll see these reports confirmed in the coming months.

People like to say the PSP is a failure. That would be incorrect. Calling the first N-Gage a failure, on the other hand, is quite apt. We reported back in November that Nokia was interested in making a comeback into the games arena with yet another N-Gage. In the era of the iPhone, a $600 convergence machine that can make calls and play games doesn't seem so outrageous. Does Nokia have what it takes to pull it off?
If Pocket Gamer is to be believed, it appears many top-name publishers are interested in Nokia's latest device. Supposedly, Nokia held a "top secret" two-day event, which was attended by big-name publishers, such as Sega, Square Enix, Capcom, THQ, EA, Tecmo, Namco, Vivendi ... and Sony. What? If this "top secret" meeting didn't seem fishy enough, Sony's presence makes it even more obvious that Pocket Gamer's reporting is downright inaccurate. Why would Sony want to work on a platform that directly competes against the PSP? (Of course, history buffs will remember that Sony did go on to make at least one game for a Nintendo platform.)
If by some chance this mysterious Nokia meeting did happen, and Sony happened to be there, we'd like to think they're simply trying to get ideas for the rumored PSP phone. The validity of Pocket Gamer's claim will be tested next week, during a new conference that will supposedly happen in Madrid.

"Custom Firmware Extender" by Cpasjuste is a set of two plugins for Dark_alex custom's firmware,
that will, like the title say, add some extra options to the SONY PSP.
With "Custom Firmware Extender 1.1" you should be able to :
- Start and stop a ftpd server while under the VSH (PSP Menu) to transfer files via WIFI (WEP,WPA).
- Reset the PSP with a button while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Power off the PSP with a button while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Change the speed of the PSP CPU/FSB while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO).
- Start and stop Usb Mass Storage under the VSH (PSP Menu) while browsing.
- Take a screenshot while under the VSH (PSP Menu) or in-game (UMD/ISO) saved in the PHOTO folder.
- Set a default CPU/BUS speed at startup.
- Set Usb Mass Storage at startup.
- Configure your buttons mapping (NOTE button + your selected button).
Heres whats new in this latest version:
- Capture folder will be created under "ms0:/PSP/PHOTO" if it dont exist.
- Enable brightness button to go to the max level.
- Ftpd server wont be launched if the psp web browser was already used

DickyDick69 has release a new version of his Media Streamer for the PSP. Heres the release info
After a period of lazy nothingness and holidays, I began coding again
- updates windoze dll’s, latest ffmpeg svn build..
- you dont have to copy the SUB file any more. PS will detect the SUB file on the PC and copy it to your mem stick. (Note: only SUB not SRT, just convert these with various tools)
- image pause, press square to (un)pause
- For 3.03 just copy the psp files to the GAME150 folder. (according some 3.03 users out there)
BTW… I will buy a new psp for making a WPA 3.03 version as I keep my old PSP on 1.5. Still getting donations from you guys is great. Even after a year of donations the total is about 400/500 euro’s.
PS .. while coding the latest version I streamed a whole concert on the background without stutter….. (video that is)
PS2 .. I also noticed better performance when I minimize the server ..

New release from Coldbird
Well Well... Paladin is my new PAL to NTSC Converter for PSX Games... its kinda handy...
And works in 99% of Cases better than Zapper, because it modifies the VModes rather than the YPos Values... ;-)
If you still experience a Screen Displacement after patching with Paladin, apply a YPos Move to 0/0 with Zapper...
Keep in Mind thought that its highly suggested not to use Zapper or any other Patching Tool if its possible... only move the Coordinates to 0/0 with Zapper if needed... :-)
REVISION 1.1 OUT - MORE SUPPORT FOR GAMES LIKE FF7! TWO NEW OPTIONAL FIXING METHODS!
