It's been a long time coming, but Sony has finally revealed its take on the great virtual reality dream. Hot on the heels of Oculus Rift, Project Morpheus can be seen as mainstream validation of VR and the first serious attempt at bringing it to a home console since Sega's aborted 1993 vintage headset. In theory, PlayStation 4 is the perfect home for virtual reality, too - Sony has the most powerful console GPU, a ready-made 3D controller in the form of PlayStation Move and a wealth of developers with direct experience creating stereoscopic 3D games. Not only that, but it also possesses a remarkably talented R&D team. But while the mainstream access and the surrounding ecosystem are unrivalled, to what extent can Sony match the cutting-edge technology offered by Oculus Rift? The advantages of the PC for a pioneering new gameplay experience are numerous: as a completely open platform, anyone can buy the kit and experiment, from indie developers to hackers and to major game publishers. Not only that, but both the VR hardware itself and PC rendering technology can adapt and evolve more quickly. Already there has been discussion of 4K VR displays, and even that might not be quite enough for the optimal immersive experience. In working with a fixed architecture and with limited scope for enhancements, Sony has to get Morpheus right on its first attempt. We see console VR as a major challenge for Sony on two fronts: hardware and software. On the former, what is clear is that Sony has done everything right based on the tools and technologies available. By most accounts, the Sony VR prototype is a very, very close match to the specs of the second-generation Oculus Rift dev kit. Screen resolution is the same, sensor frequency is a match and a similar system of using an external camera to check positional movement is integrated. There are just a couple of areas where Sony needs to improve - the 1080p LCD screen suffers compared to the OLED display in the second-gen Rift, while some confusion surrounds the 90-degree field of view and how that stacks up against the 110 degrees found in both iterations of the Oculus Rift. Project Morpheus Specs
Sony is keen to point out that the current Morpheus prototype could see considerable revisions before it is released in consumer form, but these are the specs as they stand.
- Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
- Display Method: LCD
- Panel Size: 5-inch
- Panel Resolution:1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
- Field of View: 90 degrees
- Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
- Connection interface: HDMI + USB
- Function: 3D audio, Social Screen
The Verge's eyes-on report suggests that the immersive effect of Morpheus aren't as impressive as Oculus, but as Sony's Anton Mikhailov told Eurogamer in an interview due to be published this weekend, there is no current standard on VR specifications, so perhaps the field of view comparison isn't quite as cut and dried as it seems.
The Project Morpheus prototype headset - the development version that game-makers will be using to craft their own console VR experiences. While more consumer-friendly in appearance than the second-generation Oculus Rift development kit, it has a clear display disadvantage. Sony has pointed out to us that it is looking at a similar OLED screen set-up for the production version.
"Is the difference diagonal or horizontal? That's the key there - diagonal is basically 1.4 times the horizontal. Ours is 90 degrees horizontal. If you do that calculation diagonal it's over 100, or somewhere - I think it's quite complicated doing the maths because the optics we're using are fairly non-standard, so I can't give you an exact answer. But it's certainly far above 90," Mikhailov told us."Because this is the wild west of VR, we don't have a standard way of measuring things. When you buy a 46-inch TV, you know they mean diagonal, not horizontal. If we'd like to compare specs, we need to get a very clear spec in line. And actually optics are even more complex than that - you know, for the head-mount displays it's a little strange because the aspect ratio might not even be 16:9. What you really want is a vertical field of view and a horizontal field of view. Diagonal can be kind of misleading. It gets complicated, and the numbers range wildly - basically we can quote numbers between 90 and 120, depending on how you want to talk about it."Another thing is glasses and eye relief. When you get closer to the optics in VR displays, you get a wider field of view. So if you're quoting a number that's at the lens, that could be quite a bit wider. The specs we quote is 90 degrees field of view for a glasses wearing person at 15mm eye relief or further. So it's a very specific spec."What is heartening is that Sony's prototype design is hugely improved over its existing virtual reality personal viewers, and that having approached the same set of problems as Oculus, it has come up with a solution that is, by and large, extremely similar to the second-gen Rift dev kit. There are even some additional bonuses: unlike the PC kit, the audio is standardised with an innovative virtual surround system, something that Oculus is currently leaving to PC owners to figure out for themselves. While the spec is still in a state of flux, it's likely that the 960x1080 per eye resolution will remain in place for the final version, and based on our experience with the Oculus Rift, something of a reality check is probably in order in terms of what this actually means. On a traditional game, that entire screen area occupies most of your focus, but on a virtual reality set-up, the resolution has to do much more - it stretches out to encompass your entire field of view, including peripheral vision. So, on a basic level, far fewer pixels are spent on the areas that your eyes are actually focusing on.Here's how the original Oculus Rift distorts an image. Here we see 640x800's worth of resolution per eye, but the actual main viewable area is much, much lower.

Far Cry 4 will be released in the first half of 2015 and be set around the snowy mountain ranges of the Himalayas, Eurogamer can confirm. There's more to the region than just snow - it's expected that the game will feature a number of environments.
The switch in location marks a drastic change for the adventure series, which is usually more associated with sandy, tropical locales. But it will also pave the way for some new features - such as the ability to saddle up and ride elephants, people familiar with the project told Eurogamer.Far Cry 4 is still some way away, but we understand that Ubisoft is currently aiming to release it during the next financial year (before the end of March 2015).Our first official glimpse at Far Cry 4 will come much sooner, however - the title is set to be shown off in some form during Ubisoft's annual press conference at E3 in June, one source said. Expect PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. We're unsure at this stage whether current-gen versions are also in the works.A setting based around the Himalayas was first hinted at on Twitter last month by tipsterSuperannuation, who also suggested it would include some kind of monsters.Far Cry 4's gameplay will remain similar to that in Far Cry 3 - presumably including a large focus on hunting local fauna. The world's map will be structured in a familiar fashion too, a separate source said, with outposts for you to liberate.Far Cry 3 launched in November 2012 and was followed by the excellent retro spin-off Blood Dragon around six months later - suggesting that, when finished, Far Cry 4 will have had around two years of development time.Ubisoft's E3 2014 press conference will also host other surprises - the publisher is apparently looking to build on the positive reception of reveals such as Watch Dogs at E3 2012 and Tom Clancy's The Division last year. The Division will be shown off again, of course, alongside other likely attendees such as upcoming open world racer The Crew and the recently-leaked Assassin's Creed 5: Unity.Ubisoft declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

It may seem like minor news, especially considering the hoopla over Sony's Virtual Reality this week at GDC, but the PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 controller is about to get a firmware fix. In an interview with Geoff Keighley of Spike TV, Shuhei Yoshida, Sony PlayStation's head of Worldwide Studios, confirmed that a future firmware update (we're not sure if it's console- or controller-specific like on Xbox One) will give gamers the option to turn off dim the controller's light bar. If you own a PS4, then you know just how preciously short-lived the DualShock 4's battery life can be. The ability to muffle that glaring light should help extend the DS4's longevity, but only slightly. Still, it's a major boon for the community, and those of us that like our controllers to be less of a night light and more of a gamepad.
Update:Yoshida clarified on Twitter that the firmware update will only dim the DualShock 4's light bar, not disable it entirely.

From now until April 2, the European version of Sony's PlayStation Network Store is hosting two sales both focused on massively discounting the prices attached to games bearing the Rockstar Games logo.
The core of the sale is aimed at Max Payne 3 and Grand Theft Auto 4, though these particular discounts only last until March 26. Max Payne 3 was originally £15.99 but is now £5.99 while Grand Theft Auto 4 has seen a similarly impressive price drop from £19.99 to £5.49. The sale also offers sizable discounts on the Max Payne 3 season pass, as well as the two Liberty City Stories released as DLC for Grand Theft Auto 4.
The remainder of the PSN discounts are valid until April 2 and include games like Canis Canim Edit (aka Bully), Red Dead Revolver and all three of the Grand Theft Auto games released for the PlayStation 2. Grand Theft Auto 4 is again the highlight here, as the game's Complete Edition, which was originally priced at £24.99, can be purchased for £7.99.

Those of you who missed charming stealth platformer Stealth Inc. in its prior incarnations have one more excellent chance to experience the pixelated adventure.
Stealth Inc. Ultimate Edition, as its name suggests, is a collection that not only includes the new PlayStation 4 version of the titular game, but also its two DLC expansions, The Lost Clones and The Teleporter Chamber. Taken together, these two inclusions add 40 levels to the game's original roster of 80, and, as you'd expect, they add new gimmicks to the game's stealth action not found in earlier stages.
Stealth Inc. Ultimate Edition is currently available from the PlayStation Network Store at a price of $15. Unfortunately, there are no discounts for those who already own the earlier PlayStation 3 or Vita incarnations of the game.

Sony says it underestimated demand for the PlayStation Camera, and the PS4 peripheral currently has an attach rate of around 15 percent worldwide. That's according to SCEA's Chris Norden; SlashGear reports the senior staff developer revealed the figure during his GDC presentation yesterday. Sony recently announced it sold more than 6 million PS4 units, so doing the math that equates to around 900,000 PS Cameras sold at least.
GameSpot adds that Norden asked consumers to "please be patient" as Sony seeks to increase stock, but he didn't put a timeline to the peripheral's future availability. The PS4 Camera retails for $60 in North America, and it isn't included as standard with the console, unlike Kinect for the Xbox One.

Octodad: Dadliest Catch sold more than 90,000 copies on PC, Mac and Linux, and that is enough to keep developer Young Horses afloat through the end of the year with a lineup of full-time staff, CEO Philip Tibitoski told Joystiq at GDC. Before launch, the Young Horses team split their time between day jobs and development work, but now it's all Octodad, all the time.
"If it hadn't sold well, I'd be out looking for a job right now," Tibitoski said. "I don't have to worry any more."
The next step is a PS4 launch, scheduled for April. Fans on social media are eager to control a suited cephalopod with the DualShock 4, Tibitoski said, noting that some have vowed to buy it twice. And chances are, they will buy it – Young Horses has no plans to make Octodad a PS Plus free game. Tibitoski said a significant number of players expect Octodad to be free on PS Plus simply because it's an indie game on a Sony console, but that's not something the team wants. A launch sale, maybe.

Come April, PlayStation fans can enjoy the same masochistic waiting game as Steam users when preloading comes to PS4. Sony itself has yet to confirm the feature but Sucker Punch, the studio behind Infamous: Second Son, said on Twitter that it's on the way this spring.
"No preload until April," said Sucker Punch, responding to Twitter users anxious to play the new Infamous. "[And] for North America, the PS Store will update at midnight PST, so 3AM EST."
Even when pre-ordering a digital copy of PlayStation 4, PS3 or PS Vita games through PSN, users still need to wait for games to actually hit their release dates to download them. Steam and Origin PC users can often download game files ahead of release so they can play the very second a game is officially available. Unfortunately would-be PS4 superheroes will still have to wait a few minutes to scratch their Infamous itch.

The Creative Assembly has been forced to make a number of changes in order to realize the vision for Alien: Isolation. After successful pitches to both Sega and 20th Century Fox, the developer turned to recruitment, ensuring it added new members to its team that were capable of crafting the exact game it pitched, what Creative Lead Al Hope calls: "The Alien game that we always wanted to play." A game completely different from that other Alien game, which his team at The Creative Assembly had no involvement with making, yet keeps coming up, just the same
Its pitch demo for Isolation was built in four weeks and featured two identical medical bays: one with its environment and objects in pristine condition and the other obliterated by an unknown menace. The juxtaposition led to immediate questions: "What happened? What did this?" Soon, an answer invaded the screen as a large xenomorph falls into frame, ending the demo. Sega was immediately interested, Hope says, as was Fox. Adding new talent to execute on the project was necessary. For the better part of a decade, The Creative Assembly has focused its attention on the RTS genre. Once its pitch was green lit, Creative Assembly brought in talent that contributed to a host massive franchises, including Grand Theft Auto and Assassin's Creed. Its team assembled and its concept approved, the developer began its work over three and a half years ago on Alien: Isolation – a survival horror game based on a beloved movie from the late 1970s.
"This is exactly the game we want to make," Hope says.

The "Savant" in D-Pad Studios' Savant Ascent is drawn from a close friend of the indie developer, electronic musician Savant (Aleksander Vinter). The arcade-style, 2D action shooter's protagonist is even pulled from the cover of Savant's fifth album, Alchemist, designed by D-Pad Studios' art director Simon S. Andersen.
Recently announced for PS4, Savant Ascent has players dispatching enemies in tune with Savant's music, which provides varying upgrades as tracks are unlocked. In the game, Savant is cast out of his tower by a "malicious orb," which turns his surroundings into enemies. Players must guide Savant back up the tower, which certainly explains the "Ascent" part of the game's title.
Savant Ascent first launched on PC, Mac and Linux via Steam, GamersGate and the Humble Store as well as iOS and Android in December 2013.

CCP's virtual-reality star fighter EVE: Valkyrie is also in development for Sony's recently announced VR headset, Project Morpheus.
Though CCP and Oculus VR had announced a co-publishing agreement for the game, a spokesperson from CCP has told Polygon that the exclusive partnership only extends to the PC version of the game, for use with the Oculus Rift headset.
"We partnered with Oculus VR to bring EVE: Valkyrie exclusively to the Oculus Rift on PC and we are thrilled to be working with Sony to bring EVE: Valkyrie to the PS4 with Project Morpheus," a CCP spokesperson said.
EVE: Valkyrie, previously known as EVE VR, is a multiplayer space fighting action game within the universe of the MMO EVE Online, designed with virtual reality in mind. CCP's VR title is expected to arrive on PC sometime in 2014.

Assuming you like to do more than just play games on your PlayStation Vita, the latest batch of media-centric apps available on Sony's handheld may be of interest. Crunchyroll, NHL GameCenter LIVE and Qello Concerts are now live on the PlayStation Store, catering for those with a taste for anime, sport and music. Sony also revealed that Hulu Plus and Redbox Instant apps will come to the Vita on March 25th, with fitness app Gaiam TV following later this spring. It's a nice boost for gamers who remain welded to their Vita, but the wide availability of smartphone and tablet apps means Sony is continually playing catchup.

During the lead up to the PlayStation 4's launch, Sony promised that it would enable gamers to shut off HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) post-launch and allow unrestricted video capture over HDMI. That day is almost here, as the company's just announced its intention to release two new system updates mostly focused on the console's sharing functionality.
Though Sony hasn't set a time frame for either of these two planned updates, the first should arrive in the "upcoming weeks" and will add in that previously mentioned HDCP-off option, as well as video editing tools so gamers can chop up and tweak gameplay footage captured via the Share button. In addition to this, the PS4 will also gain an option to save recorded clips and screenshots to an external USB drive, thus clearing up your system's limited storage space and letting you preserve your gaming conquests. Sony apparently plans to bundle additional features and fixes into this update, but for now it's saying that specifics on just what that entails will come at a later date. Who knows, maybe it'll also usher in VR support for Project Morpheus. Though that's probably us wishing too hard and jumping the gun a bit.

Obsidian has announced it has entered into a partnership with Paradox Interactive to launch its upcoming RPG Pillars Of Eternity.
Paradox will handle the marketing and distribution responsibilities for the game, allowing Obsidian to concentrate on its development.
The game's original Kickstarter page assured its backers that Obsidian would not team up with a publisher to release the game: "We don't have to make compromises with a publisher," it said, "we make the development decisions, we market the game, and we don't have to answer to anyone but you: our fans."
In order to satisfy backers' potential concerns regarding this new deal, Obsidian has set up an FAQ page detailing exactly what the agreement means.
"By handing off duties not related to development, Obsidian can focus on making the game that much better," the FAQ reads. "We truly believe this is for the good of the game and, by extension, for the good of the community.
"Obsidian is still fully in charge of development and will continue to be so all the way through launch and beyond."
It also assures funders that all Kickstarter backer rewards, be they digital or physical, will be delivered as promised.
Pillars Of Eternity was first revealed in 2012 as Project Eternity, an isometric party-based RPG paying homage to the likes of Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment.
With an initial target of $1.1 million, the game broke Kickstarter recordsby raising nearly $4 million.
It was officially renamed Pillars Of Eternity in October last year, and will be released on PC and Mac later in 2014.

Sony has announced Project Morpheus, its virtual reality headset for PlayStation 4. It's a prototype for now, but Sony intends to develop it further for a commercial launch.Morpheus is a visor style head-mounted display that works with the PlayStation Camera to deliver a virtual reality experience. Inertial sensors are built into the head mount unit and the Camera, which the headset requires to work, tracks head orientation and movement so as the player's head rotates the image of the virtual world rotates in real-time.It also works with the PS Move motion controller. Morpheus reproduces the player's hands and sword, for example, within the game so the player feels like they are physically fighting enemies.3D audio comes from the front, behind, left and right, recreating stereoscopic sounds heard from below and above. At the Game Developers Conference this week Sony is showing off the tech with a demo of CCP's space dogfighting game Eve Valkyrie, which is also in development for rival VR headset Oculus Rift, Eidos Montreal's Thief and a couple of its own tech demos: The Castle, which uses the Move controller, and The Deep, which lets you observe waters from inside a shark proof cage.Below are the current specifications of the prototype. Sony stressed they are subject to change: - Component: Processor unit, head-mounted unit
- Display Method: LCD
- Panel Size: 5 inches
- Panel Resolution: 1920×RGB×1080 (960×RGB×1080 per eye)
- Field of View: 90 degrees
- Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope
- Connection interface: HDMI + USB
- Function: 3D audio, Social Screen
Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said: "At SCE we view innovation as an opportunity to build on our mission to push the boundaries of play."Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators."

Oculus Rift's creator Palmer Luckey has welcomed Sony's entry into virtual reality with Morpheus, believing they could help take the technology mainstream.
Speaking immediately prior to last night's reveal at GDC, Luckey offered his thoughts on what Morpheus could bring to VR."Sony has the resources, the manpower and the money to really make a compelling entry into the VR industry," Luckey said. "They could make something really good. It remains to be seen if they'll bring those resources to bear. If they do something good, it really does bring up the whole VR industry."The VR industry isn't good enough and developed enough where we have the luxury to say we're going to own the whole thing. People aren't convinced that VR is cool, or that it's going to happen. A player like Sony doing a good job would help people be convinced of that."Morpheus shares similar specs with the improved Oculus Rift kit that opened up pre-orders today, with both prototypes boasting 1080p displays. Morpheus has been in development at Sony for over three years, and leans heavily on the company's learnings, as well as the technology, of the PlayStation Move."They need to do something that shows how good VR could be - and not something like PS Move. It was really good technology, but it was born as a response to things like the Wii and Kinect, and I don't think Sony supported as strongly as they could have. They did a great job with the hardware, and with some first-party stuff, but they didn't get the support they needed to make it a really mainstream consumer thing. I'd hate to see that happen to VR."
