Old-school anime-inspired side-scrolling open world procedurally-generated arcade shooter Galak-Z is coming to PlayStation Vita, developer 17-Bit has announced. That's in addition to PlayStation 4, senior producer Raj Joshi wrote on the PlayStation Blog."We've been inspired along the way by many of the 'new wave' roguelikes," he said. "In particular, we'd like to give a shout out to Spelunky and Don't Starve."Spelunky works so well as a handheld game, and we can't put it down. Spelunky's superpower is the extremely rich interactions between every last object in the game. When you're collecting rocks to dislodge spiders to set off arrow traps, you're pulling on a deep well of knowledge gained purely by watching the rules of the game grind against each other, and expressing it in a natural way. Every miserable, hilarious, catastrophic death doubles as a big chalkboard lesson in How The Game Works."Spelunky is also great at giving satisfying play sessions of anywhere from three minutes to three hours. The union of the roguelike structure and the pick-up-and-play nature of a handheld resonated with us. It makes us even more excited to get Galak-Z on the go."Galak-Z is due out later this year. Christian Donlan checked out the PS4 version of Galak-Zback in August and came away impressed.

Longstanding Battlefield 4 issues haven't damaged the brand, according to Electronic Arts chief financial officer Blake Jorgensen.
The game released in late October with a host of technical problems which numerous post-launch updates failed to eradicate. In December, Dice put all Battlefield 4 expansion pack development on hold until it could fix the errors still plaguing the game; it has since resumed DLC development, although it hasn't stopped regularly releasing new title updates to fix remaining issues.
During a speech at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media &, Telecom Conference in San Francisco this week, which was listened in on byGameSpot, EA exec Jorgensen blamed the "complexity" of the game for the issues, but said players have been "very responsive" to some of the patches released so far.
"We haven't seen any damage [to the brand from these issues]," he reportedly said. "Clearly we're very focused on protecting that brand.
"We've also tried to provide extra content to the consumers to make sure they keep coming back and playing the game and we're finding that it's working very well. I don't see that there's a damage issue. I think for us it's making sure that we're providing great gameplay for the consumer and we'll continue to do that."
Jorgensen also said the Battlefield franchise will be "critical" to EA's fiscal year 2015, which kicks off on April 1. Visceral Games is reportedly developing a police-themed instalment in the Battlefield series with a release date planned for 2014, although EA has yet to officially announce the next entry in the franchise.

March 9th, 2014, 20:20 Posted By: wraggster
“When we got close to the end, we still could have shipped. That’s why it’s hard.”
That’s the admission from Watch Dogs senior producer Dominic Guay, who has taken to the Ubiblog to explain the decision to delay the game from its previous next-gen launch November release date until May.
“It was not like we were failing miserably, the game didn’t work, or it couldn’t be played,” he said. “We’d been playing this game from front to back for so long it really looked like this would happen.
“But when you iterate on a game and you make a change, look at what it impacts, make another change, it takes time. It’s really hard to predict how much time that’s going to take.
“When we announced a date, it was because we thought we would be done by then, and not because someone said, That’s when you’re shipping because that’s when we need it financially, so cut the game and make it happen. It was never that. It was, This is the game you guys want to make; that’s the game we want you to make.
“We looked at it together with Ubisoft HQ. We thought we’d be done for Christmas. Everyone agreed. And that’s when we announced the date. And for quite a while, it really looked like we’d make it. We had the game playable front-to-back in spring [2013], which meant we had like five, six months ahead of us to iterate and debug, which is more time than a lot of games need. But because we are a new IP, a new game experience, that wasn’t the case. We needed that time and we needed more.
“The good news is when HQ and the studio management here looked at the game, they understood what we’re trying to do with Watch Dogs and they agreed. They said: We understand, we see the same thing as you, you guys need more time. They agreed to it. I don’t know if I’m going to get that luxury every time I ship a game, but in this case it really was beneficial. It was really what we needed to ship the game we wanted to ship.”

It’s a brave new next-gen world out there, and with it comes a new era in higher-price trade-in prices.
GameStop has revealed a part-exchange offer for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Watch Dogs, but the retailer is asking for an unusually high £14.97 from interested punters.
To take part customers need pre-order Watch Dogs for either format before March 24th. They will then receive an envelope in which an eligible boxed next-gen game can be returned (the full list is here).
Upcoming releases such as Titanfall and InFamous: Second Son are included in the offer
Once that’s been received and vetted by the retailer customer’s pre-orders will be amended to £14.97 and the game will be sent out in time for its release on May 27th.

SCEA president and CEO to leave PlayStation maker this month after more than 17 years
SCEA president and CEO Jack Tretton is to leave the company at the end of March, Sony has announced.
The decision is as a result of a “mutual agreement not to renew their contractual relationship”.
Current executive VP and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International Shawn Layden will precede Trenton as the new president and CEO of SCEA on April 1st.
Tretton has been at SCEA since 1995, working on launches for all four PlayStation consoles and their handheld cousins.
“Working at SCEA for the past 19 years has been the most rewarding experience of my career,” said Tretton.
“Although I will deeply miss the talented team at SCEA and the passion demonstrated every day by our fans, I'm very excited about starting the next chapter of my career.
“I want to thank the employees, partners and customers for their tireless commitment to the PlayStation brand and, of course, to our fans who have pushed us to new heights of innovation and entertainment over the past two decades. I leave PlayStation in a position of considerable strength and the future will only get brighter for PlayStation Nation.”
Trenton will departure having helped achieve the hugely successful launch of PS4, which sold over a million units in 24 hours in North America.

Sniper Elite 3 is coming to North America in a few months' time, starting June 27 on PC, and July 1 on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PS3. Rebellion's summer of sniping kicks off outside of North America on June 27, and that date is for all platforms.
The game's summer release aligns with the baking hot sands of its North African setting, where OSS Agent Karl Fairburne is searching for secret German tech that could help the Allies win World War 2. Sniper Elite 3 is Rebellion's first game for the new consoles, so that means it's aiming to include plenty of technical improvements, including .
If you're interested in a pre-order, you may be swayed by a bonus mission that speculates on the death of one Adolf Hitler. Fairburne is sent to investigate the Libyan town of Tobruk with orders to take down the Fuhrer - but is it Hitler, or just a double? That's the question posed by the pre-order "Hunt the Grey Wolf" content, but whatever happens, we'd prefer not to have the murder of Charlie Chaplin on our conscience.

When Ubisoft's technofetishistic action game Watch Dogs debuts on May 27 it will be available in the usual standalone varieties, but those without a console to play it on will also be able to pick up the game as part of a PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4 bundle.
The European PlayStation.blog announced the existence of these bundles earlier today. It fails to clarify exactly what will be included in these packages, though the entry does highlight the addition of "60 minutes of exclusive gameplay" to those versions of Watch Dogs appearing on Sony's consoles.
Also missing from the report is any word on how much these bundles will cost and whether they're exclusive to European territories or will be released in other parts of the world. So far there's no mention of Watch Dog bundles on the American PlayStation.blog, and our attempts to reach Sony for clarification have been fruitless. We'll update this story when and if we find further information.

Mediatonic's theatrical side-scrolling brawler Foul Play is heading to PS4 and Vita, the developer announced in a recent post on PlayStation Blog. Players take on the role of Baron Dashforth, a mustachioed demon hunter who retells his tales in front of a live audience, defeating waves of extras in the one-night-only performance.
The co-op enabled beat-em-up doesn't feature a traditional health bar, but rather gauges the audience's interest with each passing moment, and closes the curtains for boring actors that take too many hits from the combat-trained extras.
Foul Play launched on PC and Xbox 360 in September 2013 before arriving on Mac and Linux in October. Our four-star review of the game deemed the story as "superb" and the fights "frantic and fast." Mediatonic did not offer a release date for the PS4 and Vita versions as of yet, but it will be Cross-Buy compatible, so owners of both platforms need only buy it once.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will receive a "Revelations" DLC pack on March 25 for Xbox 360 and PS3, Konami announced. The add-on content has players controlling series fan-favorite Alucard, learning more about his relationship with Dracula (aside from the whole name reversal thing). The DLC is set before the events in Lords of Shadow 2.
In the add-on, players can use Alucard's "Glaciem" and "Igneas" powers and can morph into a wolf, a bunch of bats and can turn back time. Being the vampire he is, Alucard's thirst for the blood of his enemies also seemingly lends a boost in his powers. No price was given for the DLC and Konami did not list PC among the platforms the DLC will arrive on this month; we've reached out to the publisher to find out when the PC version will arrive.
Update: Konami has informed Joystiq that the PC version of the game will receive the Revelations DLC on March 25 as well.

March 9th, 2014, 09:40 Posted By: wraggster
GameStop has raised the price of the PlayStation 4's Camera peripheral, seemingly in response to supply shortages across multiple retailers.
Available at the PlayStation 4's launch last year for $59.99, GameStop now lists the accessory at $69.99. Retailers Best Buy, NewEgg, and Target report that the item is currently out of stock. Amazon has also exhausted its supply, leading to third-party resellers listing the peripheral at $99 or more.
The PlayStation 4 Camera enables voice-controlled navigation, and allows players to stream live video footage via Twitch during gameplay. Sony's free PS4 application The Playroom requires the peripheral to function.
Speaking to Polygon, a Sony representative declined to comment on a speculated shortage, but confirmed that the PS4 Camera is in high demand. "While we do not comment on the sales figures, shipment or monthly production quantity, PlayStation Camera remains in high demand, and we've been pleased with the camera's popularity among PlayStation 4 owners," the spokesperson said. "We continue to control our production according to market demand and increase the production as necessary to meet the needs."
We've reached out to GameStop for comment regarding the price increase, and await a response.

Galak-Z, a top-down shooter from Skulls of the Shogun developer 17-BIT, is now coming to the Vita handheld.
At PAX 2013, Dave tookGalak-Z for a test drive through the cosmos and described the game as "like a sped-up version of Asteroids on psychedelic drugs." He praised the game's tight controls, sharp enemy AI and the omnipresent threat of something unexpected blowing your tiny ship into component bits before you're even aware of that stray laser blast or grumpy space worm. That last bit makes a lot of sense in light of a recentPlayStation.blog entry from Galak-Z producer Raj Joshi who names delightfully infuriating indie hits Don't Starve and Spelunky as key inspirations for the shooter.
Alongside the newly-announced Vita version of Galak-Z, 17-BIT remains committed to launching the game on both PlayStation 4 and PC platforms. Unfortunately, the most concrete release window Joshi is willing to assignGalak-Z is sometime "later this year."

Mugen Souls Z, the Compile Heart-developed Japanese RPG for PlayStation 3, will arrive in North America on May 20 and in Europe on May 23, publisher NIS America confirmed to Gematsu.
A limited edition of the game is currently available for pre-order on the NIS America online store. The $70 bundle includes the PS3 game in a special edition collector's box, along with a hardcover art book, large 16"x26" poster, and Zodiac keychain.
Much like the release of the original Mugen Souls, publisher NIS America opted to remove a select amount of content for the Western release of Mugen Souls Z. At the time the cut material was confirmed, NIS America noted it was due to "the sensitive nature of some content." According to a forum post regarding the Western release's edits, the snipped stuff includes a bathing mini-game.
Whether or not you can battle evil as Omega Tom Hanks in this version is still unclear, but ... actually, we're thinking of a different game.

Free-to-play, Vita-only strategy RPG Destiny of Spirits launches on March 25 in the US, with other regions launching "around the same time," SCEA Producer Kumi Yuasa writes on the PlayStation Blog. In Destiny of Spirits, players collect hordes of upgradable spirits to battle other groups in turn-based battles.
Destiny of Spirits is location-based with social aspects that allow players to make friends and swap spirits. Each region gets a different set of creatures, and trading is the only way to snag those area-specific ones.
The beta for Destiny of Spirits led the team to reduce load time, and increase gameplay speed, spirit levels and spirit slots, so the beasties can progress more and players can hold more of them.

Kingdom Hearts 3 will conclude the decade-long battle of Sora and his friends, but it won't mark the end of the series. Future plans include the eventual release of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix, but a recent post from Square Enix on the series' Facebook page suggests new games beyond the HD remakes and the numerical sequel. The survey polls fans on their preferred gaming platforms and their general thoughts on the series, including preferred pre-order incentives and their favorite overall game.
Fans can chip in their thoughts until March 14, when the survey will presumably "die" before revealing its second, third and fourth final forms. If you'd prefer to see Disney worlds that have yet to be featured in the series or to retain Donald as your sidekick mage in all future games, now's your chance to be heard by Square Enix.

Atlus' game about birthing an army of battle-babies, Conception 2: Children of the Seven Stars, may not be due until April 15, but that doesn't mean eager would-be adoptive parents can't get a sneak peek ahead of that date. Anultrasound demo is scheduled to hit Vita and 3DS on March 25.
Those who download the demo will be able to transfer their save file to the full version of the game when it releases, while those who complete it will also earn some in-game bonuses. Atlus also released new screenshots for the game, showing off the game's giant robots. Because of course there are giant robots.

Critically acclaimed western platforming adventure SteamWorld Dig is coming to PS4 and Vita on 19th March in Europe and the previous day in North America, developer Image & Form has announced.SteamWorld Dig will go for €8.99 / $9.99 and feature Cross-Buy support so you need only buy it once to unlock it on both platforms. Additionally, the game will be 20 per cent off for PlayStation Plus subscribers during its first week on sale.SteamWorld Dig was released on the 3DS eShop to little fanfare last August, but EG-contributor Chris Schilling found it a pleasant surprise that dug (pun intended) into his usual bedtime. "SteamWorld Dig is the best kind of surprise, then: a game with substance, challenge and no little charm that seems to have come out of nowhere," he wrote in hisSteamWorld Dig review. The game was later spruced up for an HD release that came to PC and Mac via Steam in December.

Sony has a released a bunch of statistics covering the first four months of life of itsnew baby. Beyond regular sales figures (six million units so far, and nearly 14 million game sales), some of the more interesting numbers relate to how PlayStation gamers are engaging with the console's online features. We're told that half of all PS4 owners have been persuaded to cough up for a PS Plus subscription, which grants access to online multiplayer gaming as well as a number of discounted and free titles. Meanwhile, the 'Share' button on the DualShock 4 controller has apparently been used 100 million times to share recorded game highlights with the PS4 community, and 3.6 million gameplay broadcasts have been streamed over Twitch and Ustream -- a feature that still hasn't been enabled on the Xbox One. And who knows? The PS4's Twitch numbers might have been even higher if people hadn't gotten themselves banned for playing real-live strip poker.

When looking for a remote control for your next project, you might want to look in your living room. Wii controllers are a hacker’s favorite, but wagging an electronic wand around isn’t the greatest for remote control planes, cars, tanks, and multicopters. What you need for this is dual analog controls, something every playstation since the 90s has included.
[Marcel] created a replacement electronics board for the Sony DualShock 3 controller for just this purpose. With this board, an XBee, and an old controller, it’s easy to add dual analog control and a whole lot of buttons to any project using an XBee receiver.
The replacement board is based on the ATMega328p uC, includes a Lipo charge circuit and power supply, and inputs for the analog sticks and all the button boards inside the DualShock controller.
Yes, we have seen an earlier version of [Marcel]‘s project before, but this time he’s added a few new features – the rumble now works and thanks to multiple people unable or unwilling to spin a few boards, [Marcel] has put up an Indiegogo campaign.
