Moss-developed Japanese shmup Raiden IV is getting a digital release on PS3 in the West.
The game was previously published by UFO Interactive on Xbox 360 in 2009 (and was released on XBLA by Moss itself) but now the company is bringing a revamped ‘Overkill’ version – complete with new power ups and enemy patterns – to Sony’s machine.
Raiden IV first debuted in arcades in 2007.
UFO Interactive hasn’t yet confirmed if the game will be released in the West outside of North America.

London studio returns to the franchise it made famous
UK developer Rocksteady is returning to the Batman game series with Arkham Knight.
The new title is being developed exclusively for next-gen consoles PS4, Xbox and will also be on PC.
The game will act as the conclusion of its Arkham Asylum and Arkham City sereies.
Arkham Knight will feature a new Batmobile which players can drive around the city, alongside the traditional elements such as climbing buildings and gliding across the skies of Gotham.
“Batman: Arkham Knight is the pinnacle game of our hugely successful franchise, and we are giving players the most expansive, impressive title in the series,” said Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment president Martin Tremblay.
“The Rocksteady Studios team is continuing to focus on the excellent gameplay for which they are known while delivering a thrilling new experience for gamers and Batman fans.”
Rocksteady game director Sefton Hill added: “The team at Rocksteady Studios is putting a tremendous amount of work into delivering the final chapter of our Batman: Arkham trilogy so that fans can feel what it’s like to be the Batman.
“We’re excited to be developing the game for next-gen platforms, which has allowed us to bring to life the design elements that we envisioned from the beginning such as the Batmobile and how it augments Batman’s abilities, to the fully detailed and realised Gotham City.”

The PlayStation 4's arrival in Japan helped it to go beyond the 6 million mark for total sales worldwide, Sony announced today, with 370,000 consoles sold in the country since launch on February 22. The company chose the day of the PS2's 14th birthday to disclose the new milestone for its youngest system, with the figures as ever estimated by Sony itself as of March 2, and based on figures sold to consumers rather than retailers.
Sony chucked a few more numbers into this morning's announcement, including that it's sold more than 13.7 million PS4 games since the console first launched in the West back in November 2013. Also, the PS4 is available in 57 countries across the globe, more than 3.6 million broadcasts have been streamed on the system, and the DualShock 4's Share button has been used to capture content more than 100 million times.

Nippon Ichi Software is releasing a sequel to The Guided Fate Paradox, and it's coming to the PlayStation 3 in Japan on July 24. Famitsu (via Gematsu) revealed some scant details today on The Guided Fate Cross Thesis: The plot apparently centers around two heroines, and if the player saves one of the ladies, the other one dies. Yikes.
Given The Guided Fate Paradox starred a hero who became a god by winning a mall lottery, the game's probably not as dark as that synopsis makes it sound. The first game combined isometric dungeon-crawling with the turn-based RPG strategy of Disgaea, and featured, among other things, a group of companion angels clad in maid outfits who help players do their godly duty. You know, like in most religions.
There'll be more details on The Guided Fate Cross Thesis in Famitsu's print magazine this month, but we'll have to wait and see if NISAmerica has any plans to bring it to the West like it did the prior game.

Nearly a year after its debut on the Xbox 360, the HBO Go app will finally make its PlayStation 3 debut later today.
Like the other existing iterations of the app, HBO Go on PlayStation 3 allows HBO subscribers to watch the premium channel's programs without the aid of a cable box, including standout hits like Game of Thrones, True Detective and Girls. While HBO subscriptions are only available by paying additional fees to your cable provider, the HBO Go app can be downloaded from the PlayStation Network Store at no charge.
As we reported previously, HBO CEO Richard Plepler has also stated plans to launch HBO Go on the PlayStation 4, though there's still no word on when that might happen.

via http://wololo.net/2014/02/26/sony-ca...n-is-it-legal/
Sony may have more access to your PlayStation devices than you may know. I encountered something very interesting on my PS Vita, and to be honest with you, I’m not sure if it is legal. Here’s the story.
I had just woken up and got out of bed. My PS Vita was left on overnight and I needed to check my email. so, I put two and two together and figured I should just check it on my Vita. When I tapped the power button to take it out of stand-by mode, I was greeted with to notifications. Both said “The LiveArea screen has been refreshed” one for Video and one for the PSN store. I’m pretty sure you all have gotten it before. It looked like this:
When I saw this, I stood there for a moment and furrowed my brow. I’m a bit paranoid when it comes to companies monitoring what I do, so I only sign into PSN when I have to (by the way why in the frick do you have to be signed in to PSN to use TuneIn and Crackle?). How could my PSN Store LiveArea be refreshed when I wasn’t signed in?
That is the end of my story, now lets get into the speculations. Yes, for those of you that are wondering, my wifi was turned on. Even so, does Sony have any right to access the device that they sold to me, and made a profit off of? I have come up with some possible ways for this disrespectful, unauthorized occurrence.
The first one, how does Sony know I even have a PSN account? How do they even know there is something there to update? They don’t. Then how is it possible for them to do this. Here is what I think, either I am not actually signed out of PSN when it shows I am signed out, or Sony spyware installed on my Vita. I guess that last one seems a bit bogus, but I wouldn’t put it past them. Another, and much more likely possibility is has a database of the IPs of all of the Vita’s out there with a PSN account, and they just send out updates to those ones. They were thinking, “oh yeah we could just send these systems stuff and no one will ever know!”. One little flaw, Sony was expecting that people always stayed signed in to PSN.
I was not signed in.
Well, if it is any of these, (or anything else for that matter) I’m not sure if it is allowed. Since when were people able to send stuff to your devices, legally, without your permission? In this case I don’t really care, I kind of like it when my LiveArea screens are up to date, but to think that Sony has the ability to do this makes me feel violated. Yes, hit below the belt kind of violated.
Yes, this was on my PS Vita, but if Sony can do it there, why not on PS3s and PS4s? I’m gonna set up some proxies now people! In the comments, tell me some of your ideas of how Sony was able to commit this appalling act. That’s all for now from me, The Jay Doctor . I you’d like, I can be followed and contacted on Twitter @The_Jay_Doctor.

via http://wololo.net/2014/03/03/ps-vita...ja/#more-18355
I stopped counting how many exploits have been released over the past 2 years to run either VHBL (Homebrew loader) or TN-V (Custom Firmware) on our Vitas. I think we’re close to 20 by now. As we discovered several years ago, releasing an exploit for the always-connected PS vita would never be as easy as it used to be for the PSP.
Back in 2012, I introduced the concept of “Ninja releases“, where we secretly announce the name of an exploited game to our community (members of /talk) in a progressive way, in order to avoid Sony from removing it from their stores. Eventually, we do announce the name of the exploited game publicly, which usually leaves a few days for people “not in the list” to get the exploit before Sony removes the game from their store.
This release mechanism has shown its strengths over the past 2 years, but also weaknesses. There’s so much trust we can put in a “small” community of 50’000 people, and recently we’ve seen that the information tends to leak before we could do a proper public announce. A few times, Sony was made aware of the exploit before we could announce it.
Overall this means today that it is extremely difficult for “new” people on the scene to get access to the exploits, and the lack of trust also frustrates the devs who put hundreds of hours in these hacks, just to see them pulled by Sony because a handful of people can’t seem to hold their tongue.
As a result of this frustration, hackers are trying new techniques to release their hacks. Recently, both Acid_snake and Mathew_wi have taken upon themselves to release their own exploits in a different way: by releasing them secretly to a handful of people, and never make a public announcement. Of course, this means the exploit never makes it to the masses, but it dramatically decreases the risk of a leak, as all the winners of the “secret” have personal interest in not revealing the exploit.
Does this mean there will not be any more Ninja releases in the future? Honestly, I can’t tell, but I think it will depend on the next Vita Firmware, a lot. We’re all a bit surprised that Sony hasn’t released a new PS Vita firmware yet, and with 4 public exploits announced so far for the latest firmware 3.01, I think hackers are willing to try a few new things until the next firmware. But I am hearing feedback that these random giveaways do not feel any more “fair” than the old school ninja releases. What are your thoughts on that?

"I don't think you're ready for this Hanar jelly." - Beyonce Shepard
Dear Bioware,
How are you? We are well. We like video games like Mass Effect. Do you like Mass Effect? You should make a trilogy box for PS4 and Xbox One. That would be cool. We saw you talked about it. That's awesome!
"We have discussed that internally. If we can put solid plans together we'll share. Great to hear you're keen," said Aaryn Flynn on Twitter. He's the general manager at your studio. Did you know that? We were wondering why it took 82 days to answer, and Stevie T. said it was because you weren't paying attention and we said NO WAY you're just really busy making universes and stuff.
Will you write back and let us know about Mass Effect Trilogy for PS4 and Xbox One? You made it for current gen. Just copy and paste the files in the new consoles and turn the graphics up. That would be swell.
XOXO,
Little Timmy "@Joystiq" Robinson

PS4 launched in Japan, but just how big was it? Marketing and consulting chief Ricky Tanimoto of video game giant Famitsu and Enterbrain explains all to MCV.
PS4 has enjoyed a good start in Japan.
Previous PlayStation consoles usually launch earlier in the Japanese market compared with other countries. But PS4 was released after US, Europe and other Asian countries in this occasion.
The PS4 release season in Japan was not the best timing wise, because February us after the holiday season, including the Japanese New Year holiday in January.
In addition, people did not see many commercials about PS4 because the Olympics was big news on TVs at that time. We also didn’t hear about the excitement around PS4 and Xbox One, because we still do not know when Xbox One will be on sale.
Yet despite all this, PS4 managed to sell 322,083 units for the first two days although some people remain sceptical about new video game home consoles, because portable devices like 3DS and Vita are much more popular in Japan.
The first two day sales of PS4 exceeded the PS3 sales for the same term by 88,443 units.
According to Famitsu's collected data, the PS4 bundle with the PlayStation Camera sold fewer units. The version excluding the camera sold about 40 per cent more than the other SKU. The video game Knack was included in both PS4 bundles. The most popular software outside of Knack was Yakuza (Sega) and Battlefield (EA).
Live streaming video game platforms are becoming popular here, too. The use of Twitch has exceeded my expectations, while the Japanese equivalent – NikoNiko – also works with PSN in a similar way to Twitch and UStream.
In terms of our expectations for future PS4 sales, the change of consumer tax (like VAT) will likely cause a drop in consumer good sales because the tax increases from five per cent to eight per cent by April.
However, under the assumption that the popular and key PS4 titles will appear towards the last half of 2014, I expect PS4 sales to progress significantly around those big titles.
The PS4's good start in Japan means I expect there will be a bright future for this new gaming era.

One of the creators of Konami’s Castelvania: Lords of Shadow 2 has lashed out at some of the game’s reviews.
OXM has had a go at translating a piece on Eurogamer Spain in which game director Enric Alvarez says that the “specialised gaming press [lacks] professionalism".
Added Alvarez: "[You can say] 'I do really like the rock but I hate the opera', [but] this is an opinion, not an analysis. If I had to do an analysis of Don Giovanni, [I] would not even know where to start. There's a lack of honesty in the gaming press.”
In for particular criticism was Edge’s 4/10 review.
“[It’s] totally unfair,” he said. "One must be blind or stupid to give it a 4/10 for a game of this quality. With a 4/10, people interpret it is a crappy game, badly done, it breaks, with mechanics that do not work, with some awful graphics."
Alvarez also concedes, however, that "that in the end it is an opinion, and [an] opinion is totally respectable” although he adds that readers should “not confuse a review and analysis".
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow currently has a Metacritic score of 62 per cent on PS3 and 70 per cent on Xbox 360.

If you’d like to play BattleCallSpaceMarine on the Playstation 4 with a keyboard and mouse – and have an unfair advantage over everyone else playing on a console – you’d normally be out of luck. Sony implemented a fair bit of software to make sure only officially licensed controllers are able to talk to the console. It took a while, but [Frank Zhao] has figured out why keyboard and mouse doesn’t work on PS4, and created a device to enable these superior input devices.
Sony engineers decided – or were told – that the PS4 shouldn’t be able to connect to any old USB device. To that end, they made the console issue challenges to a DualShock controller to make sure the official controller is always connected over Bluetooth.
[Frank]‘s device solves this problem by taking the USB output from a keyboard and mouse, doing the CRC calculations, and sending them out over Bluetooth. Because the PS4 constantly issues challenges and responses of the authentication procedure, a real DualShock controller needs to be connected to the device at all times. Still, if you want a keyboard and mouse on the PS4, this is the way to do it.
All the sources and layouts are up on [Frank]‘s github where you’re free to create your own. This isn’t a finished product quite yet; [Frank] still needs to do a redesign of the circuit. Judging from the response of his earlier attempt at keyboards and mice on the PS4, though, this may be a successful product in the works.
