Sony has taken an impressive lead over the Xbox One across the pond.
Figures from NPD reveal the PS4 leads hardware sales in the US – a feat Sony says it has achieved despite "severely constrained" stock of the console.
Despite trailing to its rival, the Xbox One is still selling well ahead of its predecessor. Microsoft's figures estimate the new console is outselling the 360 at a rate of 2.29 times faster.
Overall, the total spend on video games hardware and software declined by one per cent in January 2014 compared to the same month of the previous year.
However, that figure has been 'normalised' to account for the five week period last year when compared to this year's four week January. Without this process, the figures are closer to a 21 per cent decline and a value of $664m versus $835m in 2013.
In terms of software, Microsoft says Xbox is still king.
The Xbox One and 360 accounted for 47 per cent of software sales last month, higher than Sony's machines according to the platform holder's report.
But software Top Ten for January showed PS4 editions of games outsold their Xbox One-based counterparts, excluding Call of Duty: Ghosts and Lego Marvel.

Combining intrepid rodents with the gaming industry's favorite suffix comesMousecraft, a new puzzle game from indie developer Curve Studios.
"The basic gameplay [in Mousecraft] is very simple: Your goal is to lead a group of mice through a machine to find the cheese at the other end of the level," wrote Curve Studios PR manager Rob Clarke on the PlayStation.blog. "You don't control the mice directly however, but instead control their environment through the use of many different types of classic 'Tetromino' blocks that can be dropped onto the level."
"Imagine the careful strategy and planning of a game like Lemmings with the blocks and fast-paced decision making of Tetris, and you've got an idea of howMousecraft works," Clarke added.
According to the developer, Mousecraft will feature 50 stages of increasing complexity, online leaderboards, an in-game ranking system, collectables to hunt and a "fully-featured level editor available during launch."
Curve Studios claims that Mousecraft "should" be available on Vita and PC at some point in May, with a PlayStation 4 version of the puzzle game following this summer. It's currently unknown what price point will be attached toMousecraft.

Austin Wintory doesn't like manipulating people. He could, pretty easily, if he wanted to, because he's a gifted musician with a knack for creating evocative music, but he doesn't have any interest in forcing you to feel a certain way. His approach to scoring a game like The Banner Saga is less about the obvious and more about the subtext – opening a door to an emotional space and letting you decide whether to walk in or not. Which sounds pretty high-minded for a game with giant warriors sporting goat horns, but that's just what's on the surface. Music's job lies in subtext.
"The game should already be, for example, sad," he explained to me at DICE. "My job is to make you understand why and add a sense of stakes and weight to what's happening, not to try make you have this base understanding that 'Now it's sad!' as if you would have missed that."
Wintory, who admits to having worked on "not so good" movies, acknowledges that his job as composer is "a lot easier to do" when he's given excellent material to work with. Journey, he said, was so brilliant that he barely had to do anything. He could just "go in there and play" (and get nominated for a Grammy). Stoic Studio's The Banner Saga was similarly inspiring, but first he had to figure out the right way to handle its turn-based-strategy nature. He did at least know what he didn't want to do with it.
"How to score the actual turn-based-strategy combat was a big question mark for me," Wintory said. He didn't want to take the same musical route as Banner Saga's most obvious recent comparison, XCOM, which featured fast-paced music. "All due respect to XCOM, I wanted to be the exact opposite of that, where I'm doing this, trying to contemplate the best strategy and I'm hearingpop-pop-pop-pop-pop that's like wailing away telling me 'Isn't this exciting?'"

ChunSoft's Zero Escape franchise is currently in limbo, as series director Kotaro Uchikoshi revealed this week that his team was unsuccessful in securing a budget for a proposed third entry in the series, due to a lack of sales.
Though previous series entries Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors andVirtue's Last Reward were well-received overseas, Uchikoshi notes that neither game was much of a success in Japan, leading to disinterest in a sequel among managerial staff. Despite the recent setback, however, Uchikoshi maintains thatZero Escape 3 "will definitely be released somehow, someday!"
Fans of the series responded to the news with an outpouring of support via Twitter. Uchikoshi currently seeks funding for the project from a third-party investor.
"If there is an great investor who thinks 'Virtue is its own reward', I wish him/her to send me a message," Uchikoshi stated. "If you know such a wonderful person, please induce him/her to cooperate."

Sweden-based studio Image & Form Games revealed that its mining-themed 2D platformer SteamWorld Dig is coming to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita in 2014, following up on previous releases for the Nintendo 3DS and PC platforms.
SteamWorld Dig is an exploration-based platformer in which players drill through the surface of an alien planet and upgrade their abilities using cash earned during excavations. Items purchased above the surface can be used to dig deeper underground, where players will encounter richer mineral veins and learn more about the protagonist's past.
SteamWorld Dig will feature consolidated single-screen play when it hits the PS4 and Vita this year, along with upgraded HD graphics ported over from the Steam version. A release date for PSN edition has not been announced.

Sony is aiming to support its PlayStation 3 hardware with new releases for at least another two years, the company has revealed.
In an interview with GameSpot, SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller discussed the importance of not overlooking PS3's established install base – specifically in the wake of PS4's initial success.
"We believe that the platform has a lot of life left in it. Two, three, four years; we think there's time left in the platform. It depends on the content. We have a good lineup this year and it looks like a good lineup next year," Koller said.
"We need to keep fueling that. We really have to keep PS3 alive. And so to do that, we have to further the content. I think there will be a good story for the PS3 over the next year to two years."
Koller also touched on the potential of PlayStation Now and streaming games for the industry as a whole – even if the technology hasn't yet reached a point where it can handle mass consumption.
"We're pretty bullish about that whole idea. We think streaming is going to be a view to a gaming future. Certainly the Gaikai technology gives us a lot of confidence. And the way it's been built; it's been built the right way.”
“Obviously, a streaming gaming service doesn't work if you're seeing high latency and the immediacy's not there. Clearly that's not the case here. PlayStation Now is something that I think does something that no other streaming service so far--rumored or in market--has done; and that's provide very low latency and very immediate gameplay. We're confident about this."

Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima has backed Sony in the next-gen console war.
Although he didn’t name names specifically, a statement in Famitsu (as reported by DualShockers) makes it pretty clear where the cult developer’s affections lie.
“I think, between the home consoles available in the domestic market, the PS4 is the best,” he said.
“It’s also excellent for graphics, being able to render 1080p at 60fps with room to spare. Since it does it a little better than other hardware, the image quality of the PS4 is the most beautiful. It’s the closest to the photorealistic quality we are aiming at.”
Kojima also revealed that “thanks to the PS4’s memory it’s possible to load the map in the background without the loading times that were necessary [with previous machines]” and bigged up the Remote Play functionality on Vita.

If you want to try a bite-sized portion of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2, look no further than a demo that's out now on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC. It was limited to purchasers of Mirror of Fate HD or the Lords of Shadow Collection, but now every bat in the belfry can have a go.
The demo begins with Gabriel Belmont in the form of Dracula, dispensing hack-and-slash with his newly acquired powers and weapons, like the soul-stealing Void Sword and the deadly Chaos Claws. Things soon escalate, and Dracula finds himself defeating wave after wave of enemies as he tries to ascend a titan-like mechanical knight - as you do.
If you'd rather wait for the game proper before seeing it for yourself, you don't have long to hold out. Lords of Shadow 2 swoops into North America in two weeks time on February 25, and Europe a few days later on February 28.

Sony aiming to keep PS3 going for another 2-4 years, and company also wants to make sure retailers can participate in PS Now
Sony Computer Entertainment America
us.playstation.com
With 4.2 million PS4 units sold over the holidays,Sony's gaming business is off to a red hot start in the next generation. While the industry is quickly turning its attention to the new consoles, the older systems' large installed bases cannot be forgotten and Sony wants to ensure that PS3 maintains a healthy ecosystem for years to come.
Speaking with GameSpot, John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, remarked that PS3 remains a very viable business opportunity for Sony, as long as the company keeps bringing good content to the platform.
"We believe that the platform has a lot of life left in it. Two, three, four years; we think there's time left in the platform. It depends on the content. We have a good lineup this year and it looks like a good lineup next year. We need to keep fueling that. We really have to keep PS3 alive. And so to do that, we have to further the content. I think there will be a good story for the PS3 over the next year to two years," he said.
Elsewhere in the discussion Koller commented on the pending launch of Sony's streaming games service PlayStation Now. While the announcement of the Gaikai-based service immediately took its toll on retailer GameStop's stock, Sony believes it can work with retail to ensure that brick-and-mortar plays a role in the otherwise all-digital business.
"We actually need to work through with them how do they help sell it; because they certainly want to participate. And then how do we make sure that they still retain what's theirs; and that's [release windows for physical products] that make sense. We believe in retailers; we believe in GameStop, we believe in Amazon, we believe in all of them; we believe in physical discs, we believe in used games. And we want to make sure that stays true. We want to make it incremental to their business; help them sell it and make margins for themselves, too," Koller stated.
A lot of cynicism still surrounds cloud gaming in general today, but Koller remains much more optimistic about PlayStation Now and streaming games for the industry as a whole. "We're pretty bullish about that whole idea. We think streaming is going to be a view to a gaming future," he said.
"Certainly the Gaikai technology gives us a lot of confidence. And the way it's been built; it's been built the right way. Obviously, a streaming gaming service doesn't work if you're seeing high latency and the immediacy's not there. Clearly that's not the case here. PlayStation Now is something that I think does something that no other streaming service so far--rumored or in market--has done; and that's provide very low latency and very immediate gameplay. We're confident about this."

TxK, the latest game from Jeff Minter's Llamatron, will be released on the PS Vita in Europe later today.
The news was confirmed on the PlayStation Europe Blog, where Minter wrote a guest column explaining the game.
TxK is a "neo-retro" shooter inspired by Llamatron's previous cult favourite Tempest 2000.
"Since [Tempest 2000] we've done a lot of work in a variety of different styles across a lot of platforms," Minter said. "When given the opportunity to create a game for PS Vita we thought it'd be nice to do something in the style of the very genre that we helped originate 20 years ago, and so TxK was born."
The game features 100 levels, three gameplay modes and a soundtrack created by "a whole herd of excellent musicians," according to Minter.
He added: "We've tried to create something that is pure and beautiful in the same way as the old abstract vector-graphics arcade games, but vibrant and modern in aspect and effects as you play.
"Unlike in arcade games we're not obliged to make games punishingly short so as to keep you putting coins in the machine. You can settle in and enjoy the ride. We believe that playing a game should be its own reward, whether or not you end up getting a high score. Games should be all about having fun."

Publisher Ubisoft announced Wednesday that the Obsidian Entertainment RPG based on the animated comedy show is finally on its way to manufacturing, set to hit PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 on March 4 in North America, March 6 in Australia, and March 7 in Europe.
The firm released a new behind-the-scenes documentary starring South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone to celebrate the occasion. In the video, the pair discusses the process of partnering with Obsidian to ensure the game's look and feel was identical to that of a South Park episode. They don't mention its first publisher going out of business.
The move from now-defunct THQ to Ubisoft prompted one of many delays for the game, which was originally planned to launch in the second half of 2012. Ubisoft announced in October that South Park: The Stick of Truth needed a "major overhaul" after it acquired the game.
A list of achievements for the game began circulating earlier this week, including rewards for joining Cartman's unfortunately named club and letting Kenny die ten times in battle.

The online arm of GameStop UK is selling PlayStation 4 consoles for £329.97 - a tidy £20 saving off of the console's usual retail price.
There's no fancy extras in the pack, obviously, just the PS4 console and a DualShock 4 controller. It's the first time we've seen PlayStation 4 available at a small discount - several weeks after Zavvi and The Hut began selling Xbox One for a similar reduction. And it's worth noting that both of those online stores continue to offer Microsoft's console at £20 off its usual £429.99.Online retail giant Amazon often matches the price of other retailers, but the PlayStation 4 pack remains only available from there at a more expensive price via a third-party seller.GameStop's £329.97 price is the cheapest we've seen for Sony's next-gen console to date - is it enough to tempt you?

The PS4 Final Fantasy 14 beta will be broken into two phases. There will be a character wipe after the first phase, which starts 22nd Feb (free to all) and ends 3rd March, according to the PlayStation blog. But characters created for the second phase - 4th April to 7th April - will be carried over into the full game. You can use your existing PC or PS3 characters in the PS4 beta by transferring character data. You won't have to do this when the full game launches on 14th April, as everyone will play on the same servers. If you want to transfer your PS3 FF14 account to PS4, you can do so starting 11th April, enjoying early access until 13th April. Once you transfer there's no going back, though, and if you want to play on both machines you'll need to buy a second copy of the game. The PS4 version of FF14 - a relaunched game that's reinvigorated Square Enix's fortunes - features Vita Remote Play, so you can "craft, gather and play wherever you go", or so it says. There's mouse and keyboard support, touchpad support, and Share support for screenshots and videos.

PS3 and Xbox 360 demos of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 are out today. A Steam demo will be out tomorrow, Konami has said.On Xbox Live, the demo is just over 700MB.In the demo you're Dracula, gagging on plastic fangs, dribbling fake blood and swishing a static-charged polyester cape. Not really! Had you going! The demo's actually a prelude to the full game, and puts you in Dracula's boots as he comes under attack from the Brotherhood of Light. You'll use the Void Sword and the Chaos Claws, and you'll even fight a huge Titan, effectively a moving level, which you'll climb and then presumably defeat. The full game is out 28th February.

According to SCEA's hardware marketing VP John Koller, around one in three Vita owners also own a PS4.
Koller said the impressive attach rate is thanks to the PS4's Remote Play feature, which lets users play PS4 games on the Vita via a high-speed wireless connection that's much improved over PS3 Remote Play.
"Remote Play has really been one of those areas that has caused a lot of PS4 consumers to go out and buy a vita, so we've seen these sales pick up since the PS4 launched," said Koller at a recent Sony press event attended by CVG.
"I think that's great news for all of our independent developers as well as front-line developers and publishers as well. It's a good market for us right now."
Koller also said that almost half of all PlayStation Vita software is purchased digitally.
The new slim PlayStation Vita will arrive in North America "this spring" with a $199 Borderlands 2 bundle, Sony announced at the same event.
